Dicho distrito está ubicado al este de Lima, cuyos principales productos minerales son el zinc, cobre, plata y plomo. Para dicho estudio geológico se empleó los valores de ensayos para el cobre, plata y zinc principalmente; en algunos casos, los valores para el plomo; de las vetas estudiadas. En el estudio de la paragénesis no se ha hecho un estudio completo al microscopio de la secuencia de los minerales de la veta. Se han aprovechado únicamente, las mejores exposiciones en el subsuelo que ofrecen evidencias excelentes para deducir las características principales de la paragénesis.

At Reefton, mesothermal gold deposits occur in the Ordovician Greenland Group basement and bituminous coal deposits occur in overlying Eocene Brunner Coal Measures. These different resource types occur in close proximity to one another in the same topography, vegetation and climate. Both types of resources have been mined for many years and as a result historic mining areas discharge water with chemistry reflecting the mineralogy of the deposits. Coal measures release natural acid rock drainage throughout the region due to oxidation of pyrite in coal and associated sediments. Levels of acidity are increased in mining areas, and pH near three is common. Gold mines contain pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Discharge waters from these sites have pH near seven because of the high acid neutralising capacity of the basement rocks. Both coal and gold mining sites have iron oxyhydroxide precipitates in drainage waters. These precipitates are more abundant at gold mining sites, and one deposit is up to 5 m thick. Iron oxyhydroxide at coal mine sites contain Zn (up to 89 ppm), Ni (up to 10 ppm), As (up to 163 ppm), Cr (up to 23 ppm), Pb (up to 16), and Cu (up to 11 ppm). Jarosite group minerals have been identified in the coalmine iron oxyhydroxide, although most of the material is amorphous. Gold mine iron oxyhydroxide contains Zn (up to 353 ppm), Ni (up to 592 ppm), Cr (up to 17 ppm), Cu (up to 72 ppm), Pb (up to 29 ppm), Sb (up to 230 ppm), and this material is particularly high in As (up to 20 wt per cent). Most of the material is amorphous but distinctive zones (mm scale) are As rich (up to 30 wt per cent As oxide). Pharmacosiderite, K2Fe4(As04)3 (OH)5.6.3H20, is a secondary mineral in one deposit. These iron oxyhydroxide deposits are useful indicators for the metals mobilised into the environment by oxidation in the historic workings.

The understanding and the development of sound theoretical basis concerning the pile foundations has been phenomenal during the past few decades, considering the thousands of years the piles have evidently been in use. The importance of the quality assurance and the need for verification of load bearing capacity is being further reinforced rather than undermined by these developments. This is evidenced by significant developments made in the pile load test technology in recent decades, making it possible to make judicious selection of a test method, or a package of test methods, suitable for a given situation. The selection depends on the objective of carrying out the test and the reliability desired. Presently, the possible selection ranges from dynamic to static methods. The extent of dynamic effect in a test can be reckoned based on a dimensionless parameter defined as the 'relative duration'. Examples of different load tests are given for illustration of the different methods currently in use.

This paper gives a description of the methods of mining employed at North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W.GEOLOGICAL NOTESThe main Broken Hill lode occurs as a replacement of tightly folded pre-Cambrian sediments. Replacement has followed certain stratigraphical horizons and the main bulk of the ore is found where these have been packed into the noses of anticlinal and synclinal folds.Throughout the mine the ore-bearing folds pitch north fairly consistently at 45 degrees, as a result of which two favourable horizons in the same fold appear in plan as separate orebodies and these are referred to as the "Southern Orebody" and the "Northern Orebody" respectively.The general dip of the orebodies to the west is about 60 degrees. A typical sill is shown in the plan of the 1,400-ft level (Fig. 1).Both the hanging wall and footwall rocks throughout the mine are weak and, as a result, it is necessary that the hanging wall must be well supported after ore extraction, to prevent subsidence. The weakness in the footwall is confined to a narrow zone, approximately 60 feet in width. This Bureau of Mines report gives a detailed study of water usage in the Montana mineral industries, along with projections for the future. The mineral industry of Montana in 1963 used 36.5 billion gallons of new water, and reused or recirculated an additional 53.5 billion gallons for a total water requirement or usage of 90 billion gallons. The petroleum industry was the major water user, followed by the copper and zinc industries. Many mineral industry operators provide their own water, and new water is withdrawn largely from surface sources. At present, sufficient water is available in rivers, streams, and reservoirs in Montana; however, shortages do exist locally near mineral industry operations using large quantities of water. Some is supplied from sources up to 44 miles distant. New water withdrawn by the State of Montana mineral industry is expected to increase from 36.5 billion gallons in 1963 to 51.1 billion gallons by the year 2000. The total-water requirement is expected to more than double, or reach 182 billion gallons by the year 2000.

The paper point out the Angostura deposit is located in Colombia. The Angostura deposit, located within the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is hosted by Triassic-Jurassic quartz monzonite and quartz diorite porphyries emplaced into Precambrian gneisses of the Bucaramanga Group. Silicification, pyritization, sericitization, alunite and pyrophyllite and other alteration and indicator minerals suggest a high sulfidation origin for the strong hydrothermal alteration. Major faults and shear zones occur in the area with NE, E-NE, E-W, WNW, NW and N-S directions. Analysis of geological results and structural modeling has also demonstrated that there is potential for additional high-grade ore shoots within the presently known mineralized structures. Delineating these structures should result in an increase of overall grade and contained ounces.

The various district, were named when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When established, the districts embraced large areas n without well- defined borders, so that the names have little geographical significance.

Vários resíduos gerados nos processo siderúrgico são fonte de ferro e podem ser reciclados e reintegrados de volta ao ciclo produtivo do ferro. Exemplos incluem pós de coletores e despoeiramento, carepas e lamas. Estes materiais são geralmente classificados como rejeitos e são descartados em aterros a um alto custo, mas adquirem um valor significante quando reciclados e reutilizados apropriadamente. O presente estudo consiste em demostrar a viabilidade da utilização destes resíduos em um processo de mini sinterização, plantas de sinterização produzindo até 1 milhão de toneladas por ano. O produto obtido apresenta propriedades químicas e físicas adequadas para carregamento direto no alto-forno, para utilização como nucleante na sinterização, ou como refrigerante no convertedor. O balanço do zinco e dos álcalis é de extrema importância para viabilizar um sínter final com qualidade requerida e será analisado neste estudo. Conclui-se que a utilização dos resíduos citados é economicamente viável e o estudo de caso apresentado neste trabalho comprova o benefício com retorno significativo.

Copper anodes generated from copper scrap are relatively rich in Sn, Zn and Fe. Because of the presence of oxygen, only trace amounts of Sn occur in solid solution in the copper crystals. Thus, Sn occurs mainly as SnO2, Cu-Sn-Ni oxide and Sn-Ni-Zn oxide in the copper anodes, and Zn and Fe occur mainly as minor constituents in the Sn-Ni-Zn oxide and Cu-Sn-Ni oxide. During electrorefining, these oxide species are liberated from the copper anodes and report directly to the anode slimes. The trace amounts of Sn present in solid solution in the copper crystals dissolve but reprecipitate as Sn arsenate or a Sb-As-Sn-O phase. Accordingly, high Sn contents in copper anodes do not lead to elevated Sn concentrations in the electrolyte.

We present a review of research and development for coal based clean energy systems aiming for zero emissions to the atmosphere. These systems can utilize all kinds of coal or other solid carbon sources such as tar sands as well as liquid hydrocarbons. The chemical energy of carbon is transferred to hydrogen and used in power generation, in fuel cells, or hydrogen combusting turbines. The waste products of these future power-generating systems are ash, sulfur compounds and CO2. We also summarize current and developing technologies for processing of CO2to produce mineral carbonates for permanent disposal, and associated byproducts.

The objective of the ? 200 million ($280 million) project Parma Railways Station-Urban Transformation was the reconnection of the North and South parts of the town by constructing an 80 m (250 ft) wide sunken artery passing under the four double railway tracks of the station without any impact on train traffic. The site of the project, adjacent to the Parma River, presented water seepage problems at any excavation depth. The use of conventional large diameter bored pile machinery was not allowed by the Railway Authority because equipment dimension and construction phases do not comply with train traffic safety regulations. Foundations for the bypass were thus constructed by minipiles nested into jet-grouted soil using machinery operating within the existing head room and at a safe distance from the tracks. Jet-grouting treatment reached depths of 25 to 28 m (80 to 90 ft) from tracks? grade and embedded minipile-heads were terminated at 2 to 3 m (6.6 to 10 ft) below grade. Load tests on minipiles were pushed to failure. Failure occurred at a 240 t (265 t) load without breakage of the bond between the jet grouted soil and the minipiles. A 0.93 MPa (135 psi) shear resistance ??? between minipile steel casing and the jet grouted soil was measured prior to the failure of the steel casings. Overall measured foundation settlements were well within expected values and were considered insignificant.

Mr. H. W. GEPP said he desired to bring particular attention to this paper. The underlying intention of the Development and Migration Commission when the paper was prepared was to place at the disposal of Australian miners and metallurgists the story of the development of tin metallurgy as it had been advanced in other countries, particularly Great Britain. They had very considerable resources of low-grade tin-bearing metals in the eastern coast of Australia particularly, and they need not anticipate that tin was going to remain at the extremely low price at which they saw it to-day. The Commission felt that it was most desirable to place 'on record, and make easily available, the story of the treatment of comparatively low-grade tin ores in other parts of the world.Arrangements were made that the technical staff at Australia House, in conjunction with Mr. H. S. Elford; should collect this information so that in due course, when Australia awoke to an interest in low-grade deposits, of which there were many throughout Australia, this story would then not,have to be gathered from other areas and other places of the world. The -paper was a contribution which would turn out to be of very great value. He suggested to the younger members that this thorough contribution could be made the subject of study so that they would be ready to assist in the developments which must come. Mr. WM. APLIN said there was one point in connection with the paper upon which he would like to speak. The Bureau of Mines has started an engineering study of oil recovery by miscible-phase displacement. As a preliminary part of the investigation a literature and patent study was made to prevent duplication of work already done, to become acquainted with those actively engaged in research of this type, and to learn where the recovery method has been attempted. This bibliography gives results of this study. The bibliography includes 254 references to U.S. and foreign patents and published literature relating to miscible-phase displacement processes of oil recovery. It is divided into the following sections: (1) U.S. patents, (2) foreign patents, (3) literature references, (4) author index, and (5) publication and source reference. The patents and literature references are listed alphabetically by author by intervals of years. References to February 1963 are included.

"Purpose of InvestigationThe process of removing solid material from liquid suspensions has been studied at the Northwest Experiment Station, United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington, as part of a general program to investigate the dewatering of Pacific Northwest plastic kaolins, which is difficult by ordinary filter-pressing methods. The present paper is a progress report of the work began by Vance S. Cartwright in 1928 and continued in 1931 and 1932. Spray evaporation is believed to be valuable for the following classes or grades of clay and clay mixtures:(1) Highly colloidal, plastic-type clays, which release their mechanically attached water with difficulty; (2) clays prepared for shipment in pulverized or powdered condition; and (3) synthetic, ceramic, porcelain, and tile mixtures prepared as aqueons suspension, dried and pulverized before molding. Dilute suspensions can be dewatered by spray evaporation to produce concen-trated casting slip or plastic clay with a lower water content.The most common dewatering method used in preparing powdered kaolin for the market comprises the following steps: Reduction of the water content by filter-pressing from approximately 75 percent in the thick ""slip"" condition to about 30 percent in the condition; further reduction of the water in the filter-press cakes by heat to about 5 percent; and pulverization of the dried cakes in hammer or dust. These three steps can be simplified to a single process by spray evaporation."

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is constructing a new tunneled route under Seattle to replace the existing State Route 99, Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV), which follows the historic waterfront for several miles. The viaduct separates the businesses that rely upon the tourist trade from the down-town area. The reconnection of the city to the waterfront areas will occur following the completion of the SR99 Re-placement program that replaces the aging structure that was severely impacted by the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, with a state-of-the-art, twin-deck highway with a world record-breaking 17.4-m (57.3-ft) bored tunnel. Constructed in the 1950s, the double-tiered viaduct is nearly 3.2 km (2 miles) long and runs parallel to city?s waterfront. The viaduct, which is partially supported by the seawall, is a vital local and regional transportation link and carries about 110,000 vehicles each day. The seawall, built from concrete and timber in the 1930s, extends along Seattle?s waterfront and supports the soil behind it. Studies in the 1990s showed that the viaduct was nearing the end of its useful life, apparent by its exposed rebar and weakened columns. The 2001 Nisqually earth-quake further damaged the viaduct, forcing WSDOT to temporarily close it for inspection and limited repairs. The viaduct and nearby seawall are vulnerable to an-other earthquake and continue to show signs of age and deterioration. Following a collaborative process, WSDOT developed the following guiding principles to the viaduct replace-ment:

The purpose of this report is to describe the work accomplished by Mine Safety Appliances Company under Contract No. H0110845. This contract required the design, installation and testing of a permissible mine surveillance and communication system for the USBM Bruceton experimental mine facility. While much of the design and operational detail of this system can be drawn from the instruction manuals delivered with the equipment, some of it will be repeated here in Volume I for the sake of clarity, but the principal objective will be to report on overall system and subsystem performance and to suggest design alternatives for future consideration. Details of the overall system design will be found in Volume II of this report.

A concise historical review is given of the Overpelt plant and the general principles of zinc hydrometallurgy are briefly outlined, together with a description of the new electrolytic zinc plant ore roasting process and, more particularly, the original Overpelt roasting process. A detailed description of the flowsheet of the zinc electrowinning plant, .with an annual capacity of 100,000 t, successfully put into operation in May 1974, is given. The treatment of the residues is performed following the goethite process ; the purification is continuous in two steps; the tank house is equipped with cells containing jumbo cathodes; the handling and stripping of the cathodes is fully mechanized. Concluding the description, some metallurgical and other features of the project are explained in detail.
