Low-cost hydroelectric energy in the Pacific Nortnwest has been an important factor in the development of a ferroalloy industry. Eleven companies, employing approximately 1,000 persons, produce about 116,000 tons (1954-58 average) annually of ferrosilicon, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferrophosphorus, silicomanganese, and ferronickel. About 7,500 tons (1954-58 average) of these ferroalloys is consumed in the Pacific Northwest States of Washington and Oregon; the rest is used principally in other western and mid-western markets. In 1959, the Bureau of Mines began a study to determine the current status and to evaluate the potential of the ferroalloy industry in the Pacific Northwest. The Bureau gathered information from operating alloy plants in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana; from published materials; and from consumers of ferroalloys.

THE application of the cyanide process to complex sulphide ores for the extraction of their bold and silver is no longer a novelty, but, as an example showing modern tendencies in this direction, the following description of the new milling process at the Lucky-Tiger mine is offered: The extraordinary richness of the ore in the upper workings of this mine made any thought of milling in its early hays seen unnecessary. Its location in an almost inaccessible part of the rugged mountains just south of the Arizona boundary-line, and 60 miles from the town of Douglas, made the expense of bringing in machinery and supplies a very serious consideration. But, after the property had been shipping high-grade ore on mule-back for a few years, there remained in the mine a considerable tonnage of vein-matter that was too low in value to ship, but which it was thought could be milled near the mine at a profit. The first milling-experiment consisted in the installation of Nissen stamps in conjunction with concentrating-tables and Frue vanners, but, as the ore from the upper workings contained most of its silver in the form of cerargyrite, this type of mill was not successful. The proximity of the mine to the great copper-concentrating mills of Cananea and Moctezuma naturally made the influence of copper-milling, ideas felt in the company's next installation. At considerable expense a stage-crushing concentrating-mill, with a capacity of 100 tons per day, was built. This mill was modeled along the lines of the most approved practice in copper-concentrators at that time, the main idea being that crushing by stages in rolls was necessary in order to prevent losses from ?sliming." Downhole Seismic Testing (DST) is a very popular applied seismology site characterizing tool within geotechnical engineering. A challenging aspect of DST is to characterize the acquired seismic data sets to determine the analysis method that will result in the most accurate interval velocity values. BCE has invested considerable resources into developing Seismic Trace Characterization (STC), which uses various independent parameters of the acquired data at a particular depth. Initial work in this area resulted in the selection of the linearity estimate from the polarization analysis, the cross correlation coefficient of the full waveforms at the particular depth and the preceding depth and a uniquely developed parameter referred to as the signal shape parameter for this characterization. Subsequent analysis in STC identified two other parameters: the Signal-Noise-Ratio (SNR) and the Peak Symmetry Differential (PSD). The paper briefly describes these parameters and then outlines how they can guide the data analysis to derive more accurate results, especially near surface, which is especially important to assess the liquefaction potential in areas prone to earthquakes, such as California. The process will be illustrated with actual data from another area prone to earthquakes, namely New Zealand. 1. INTRODUCTION The near surface characterization of low strain in-situ shear wave velocities (VS) has proven critical for liquefaction assessment. Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which dynamic loading of saturated soil results in the material properties to change suddenly from a solid state to a liquefied state. VS is an important parameter for evaluating liquefaction potential due to fact that it is influenced by many of the variables that influence liquefaction (e.g., void ratio, soil density, confining stress, stress history, and geologic age (Andrus et al., 1997)). Aki and Richards (2002) also outline that the amplitude of ground motion should depend on the density and shear wave velocity of near surface soils and rocks according to the theory of wave propagation. Since the change in density with the increase in depth is relative minor compared to that of the shear wave velocity, the latter is a very useful parameter to represent site conditions (Stewart et al., 1997). Bray (2014) and his colleagues carried out an extensive geotechnical analysis of the catastrophic liquefaction that occurred in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2010 and 2011 and found that near surface rather than deep liquefaction resulted in extensive foundation damage.

In view of their size and favorable characteristics, Shell's heavy-oil fields on the eastern coast of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela — known as the "Bolivar Coast" — are obvious candidates for the application of thermal recovery methods. During the last decade various methods have been tested, such as steam drive,', steam soak and in-situ combustion.3 Steam soak was discovered as a promising production method rather accidentally in 1969, during early steam drive testing in the Mene Grande Tar Sands1 When steam erupted at the surface due to breakdown of the overburden, the injection wells were back-flowed to relieve the reservoir pressure. This resulted in high oil production rates, all the more impressive because the reservoir is unproducible by primary means. It was concluded that injection of limited amounts of steam might be a very effective method for stimulation of heavy-oil wells. To obtain information that would be more widely applicable, testing of the process was continued in the eastern part of the Tia Juana field (Fig. 1). Here even more favorable results were obtained than in Mene Grande. This created sufficient confidence to prompt a large-scale project, which was considered essential for an adequate evaluation of ultimate recovery, steam requirements, mechanical problems and economic prospects. To obtain an early answer on the ultimate recovery a fairly depleted area was selected in the western part of the same field ("A" in Fig. 1). The first steam was injected in March, 1964. This paper describes the performance until the end of 1966. The production mechanism and well inflow performance are discussed in some detail. In view of the favorable results obtained so far, steam soak operations have expanded considerably since the start of this project. Presently, five other projects are under way, of which two are about the same size as the one under discussion, with further extensions being programmed. Description of the Project Reservoir Data Shell's part of the Main Tia Juana reservoir has a proven area of 8,800 acres and an average net oil sand thickness of 130 ft. It contained an initial quantity of 2,750 million bbl of stock tank oil (STOIIP), with an API gravity ranging from 10 to 15 API and a viscosity of 100 to 10,000 cp (at 122F). As a geological unit it is known locally as the Lower Lagun-illas member of the Lagunillas formation, which is early Miocene in age. The sand bodies are believed to be distributary channel sands deposited in a lower coastal plain. Most of the channel sands have lateral and some vertical communication. The field was developed mainly in the period from 1936 to 1950. The ultimate primary recovery is estimated at 18.1 percent of STOIIP, of which 12.5 percent STOIIP had been produced by the end of 1963 from some 540 wells. Because of their chemical reactivity and affinity for oxygen, rare-earth elements are difficult to extract, and due to their close chemical similarity, it is an exacting task to separate one from the other. Nevertheless, these same characteristics can be used to benefit other metals by enhancing their resistance to high-temperture oxidation/corrosion and by inhibiting their corrosion in aqueous environments. This paper gives an overview of the use of rare-earths: [a] as alloy additions, [b] in coatings, and [c] when added to hostile environments, to retard rates of high- temperature oxidation and inhibit aqueous corrosion.

Accurately estimating load distributions and ground responses around underground openings play a significant role in the safety of the operations in underground mines. Adequately designing pillars and other support measures relies highly on the accurate assessment of the loads that will be carried by them, as well as the load-bearing capacities of the supports. There are various methods that can be used to approximate mining-induced loads in stratified rock masses to be used in pillar design. The empirical methods are based on equations derived from large databases of various case studies. They are implemented in government-approved design tools and are widely used. There are also analytical and numerical techniques used for more detailed analysis of the induced loads. In this study, two different longwall mines with different panel width-to-depth ratios are analyzed using different methods. The empirical method used in the analysis is the square decay stress function that uses the abutment angle concept, implemented in pillar design software developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The first numerical method used in the analysis is a displacement-discontinuity (DD) variation of the boundaryelement method, LaModel, which utilizes the laminated overburden model (Heasley, 1998).

PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A12Si4010(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mobs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyro-phyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constitu-ents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 percent and the alumina from 22 to 33 percent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi estudar a influência da adição de argônio à atmosfera de redução a plasma sobre a redução de pós de hematita. Os experimentos de redução foram realizados em reator a plasma pulsado DC, sob pressão de 533 Pa, temperatura de 380ºC, tempo de 60 min, fluxo total de hidrogênio e de argônio de 400 cm3/min e variando os teores de argônio e hidrogênio. Os resultados mostram que os aglomerados de partículas após redução possuem um aspecto esponjoso. Verificou-se que o uso de uma mistura gasosa contendo 2% de Ar e 98% de H2 permite um aumento de aproximadamente 7,76% na fração de redução.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is not just a catch-cry. It is an essential component of every-day life in many professions, including accountancy, law and public administration. Without realising it, many other professions are undertaking CPD activities in an un-structured way, including mining, metallurgy and geology. Examples include Annual and technical conferences of The Institute, Branch-level technical meetings and in-company training and development programmes and technical exchanges. Whilst approaches to date have undoubtedly helped keep the Australian mining industry at the forefront of mining technology, one cannot presume that technological development will stand still. To meet this challenge, human resource development must keep pace, not only to optimize utilization of technological developments, but more importantly to develop firm bases from which new products, processes and technologies can be developed within Australia.

To many Australian Mining Engineers, we take it, the singular features of banket deposits are not as familiarly known as they would wish, possibly because in the majority of instances they are not in touch with the South African milling world, and have had little opportunity of studying the development of the banket beds, either from correspondence or literature. The writer hazards this opinion feelingly, because, when in Australia and before he had visited Africa, the utmost knowledge he was able to obtnin was a mass of conflicting theoretic discussion as to the agencies which formed the banket bed, without any practical hints as to their geological horizon, the rocks with which they are associated, the usual appearance and character of the ore, in fine, without that everyday detailed description which the miner requires when seeking information regarding mineral or metal deposit foreign in character to any that he has yet studied, or as yet had any opportunity of studying in his own country.The writer recognised that many more able men than he have from time to time discussed the features and formation of the banket beds of the land, notwithstanding which and feeling that many of his Australian colleagues have found themselves in a similar position regarding accurate detailed information respecting these African banket deposits as he himself was, he hopes that the present paper on the said deposits, as found on the fields under notice, will prove useful to some and of interest to all.

The occurrence of fracturing due to high stress levels is a major factor in hangingwall stability in deep level gold mine stopes. However, rock falls cannot be the result of these fractures alone. Rock falls can result only from the occurrence of unstable rock blocks defined by the interaction of the stress induced fractures and naturally occurring geological planes of weakness. These planes include bedding planes and joint set planes. However, there is a general lack of information on the characteristics of these planes (orientations, spacings and lengths)?it does not appear that any such systematic and quantified information, if collected, has been published. To remedy this situation to some extent, joint mapping exercises have been carried out in several geological environments in two gold mines. The data collected on joint geometry included orientation, spacing and length, and this information is included in the paper. In addition, the paper describes the use of the data collected to evaluate the potential for rock falls and the probability of failure of stope support

The mining industry occasionally blasts near pressurized transmission pipelines and has requested guidance of safe vibration levels and setback distances. the Bureau of Mines and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources cooperated with AMAX Coal Company on a study of coal mine overburden blasting. Five buried and pressurized 250-ft pipeline sections were specifically installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN for testing to failure. Four welded steel pipes ranging from 6- to 20- in diameter and one 8- PVC water supply pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and internal pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale blasting representing construction activities, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 2100 lb per delay in 12-l/4-in diameter holes.

Um dos problemas enfrentados pela maior parte das aciarias relaciona-se à redução do percentual de fósforo do aço. Reduzir o fósforo contido no aço tornou-se um requisito fundamental nas siderúrgicas que utilizam convertedores LD, devido à crescente demanda do mercado por aços especiais, como por exemplo, aços para a indústria automobilística. Durante o processo de desfosforação, as principais fases sólidas que podem se formar na escória de convertedor são CaO, MgO, silicato dicálcico (2CaO.SiO2), fosfato tricálcico (3CaO.P2O5), formado pela oxidação do fósforo, e o 3CaOSiO2.3CaOP2O5. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a formação destes compostos e avaliar a influência das fases sólidas formadas durante o processo de desfosforação do aço. Para isto foram analisadas quatro composições químicas de escórias com diferentes teores de CaO e FeO, sendo duas composições médias das escórias estudadas pela Usiminas, uma escória da literatura e uma escória desfosforante elaborada para pesquisa. Os resultados mostraram em quais composições ocorrem a formação das fases sólidas citadas e sua influência no processo.

The interaction between rock and drill bit during drilling has been modeled for many years, but a complete understanding of the phenomena occurring has yet to materialize. Successful models will allow the prediction of rate of penetration in a given environment and optimal selection of drill bit and drilling parameters, thus minimizing exploration costs. In most rock-drilling models the value of the unconfined compressive strength of the rock (UCS) is used in the predictive equations, within the concept of specific energy, and the value of UCS is the percentage of the value of the stress applied on the drilling bit in order for the bit to advance. While the exact percentage depends on the model used and it is not known with certainty, good knowledge of UCS is nevertheless required before any decent prediction can be made on rate of penetration. Determination of UCS, normally done via destructive testing, requires not only the availability of sound rock core samples but also expensive testing and significant time for the test, which frequently are not available for routine drillability predictions. Hence, a multitude of methods and techniques has been proposed for estimating UCS from various indirect and/or non-destructive measurements, or combination of measurements with neural networks, such as point load index, block punch index, unit weight, and apparent porosity, water absorption by weight, sonic velocity, and Schmidt hardness. The many proposed approaches are critically reviewed and the results are compared, and what becomes apparent is that after many years, not only in mining but also in oil-well drilling, accurate indirect determination of UCS is still an elusive goal. An equation to predict UCS from sonic velocity data is suggested based on several data sets reported in the literature. Use of the specific energy equation with UCS or sonic data and utilization of drilling data allows an estimation of the efficiency of energy transfer from the bit to the rock and of the friction coefficient. Analysis of data reported in the literature, both from laboratory and field studies, has shown that this approach is sound and enables the determination of energy transfer efficiencies and friction coefficients, which for the cases studied range between 15 and 30% and 0.15 and 0.30 respectively. Thus, the suggested data analysis approach allows drillers to focus on inefficiencies and optimize drilling practices in future campaigns. Critical and strategic metals are often present in small quantities in low-grade domestic ores. When these ores are leached, the resulting solution usually contains the metals in very dilute quantities. Selective electrowinning from dilute electrolytes was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A metal deposit containing 84 pct nickel was electrowon from the leach solution of a complex domestic ore bulk flotation concentrate originally containing approximately 2 wt-pct nickel. Key to achieving accelerated deposition rates, in the case of dilute solutions, is the rapid movement of the electrolyte through the electrowinning cell. Pure, synthetic nickel electrolytes were used to establish deposition parameters, and to optimize electrolyte velocity or mass transfer rates. Hydrodynamic and electrodeposition parameters for both the synthetic and leach electrolytes are presented and the experimental research described. Selective electrowinning appears to offer a viable alternative to physical separation methods to obtain separate metal "concentrates" from low-grade ores.

"“Classification System Efficiency (CSE)” is a powerful, emerging tool that can be used to increase grinding circuit efficiency. It is defined as the percentage of the ball mill energy being used to grind target, oversize particles. The discovery, validation and current use of CSE, including how it was manipulated, are described through seven plant case studies. These resulted in efficiency improvements ranging from 3 to 30 percent, along with major reductions in over-grinding. The achievable CSE for any given circuit is described. This paper demonstrates both how, and how much, every plant can benefit from increasing grinding circuit CSE.DEFINITIONS: BALL MILL CIRCUIT “CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM EFFICIENCY (CSE)”, “EFFECTIVE MILL GRINDING POWER”: “WASTED/OVER-GRINDING MILL POWER”The closed ball mill circuit is shown in Figure 1. The extreme importance of the circulating load ratio in determining circuit productivity was demonstrated by Davis (1925) and re-published by Guadin (1939), as shown in Figure 2. The circuit production rate increases with increased circulating load ratio, rapidly so at first and continuing to increase more gradually with higher and higher values of circulating load ratio.The underlying cause of this relationship was seen when comparing the ball mill feed and product size distributions from two different ball mill circuits, one with a low circulating load ratio, and one with a high circulating load ratio (Figure 3). While the F80’s and P80’s of these two circuits were close to the same, the mill feed and discharge size distributions were quite different. The ball mill in the circuit with the higher circulating load ratio contained a substantially greater fraction of material coarser than the target P80, as indicated by the respective mill feed and discharge size distributions. This fraction represents the fraction of the mill power being expended on “coarse” (in this case, plus P80 size) material, or the circuit “classification system efficiency.” The “effective mill grinding power” is the total mill power multiplied by the CSE. The compliment of CSE, the remaining fraction of “fines” in the mill, is the fraction of the mill power being wasted, and spent on over-grinding of material already finer than the circuit target product size. This is the “wasted/over-grinding mill power”"

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Ore deposition was related to three major stages: continental rifting and separation (Vendian-Late Cambrian), convergence (Late Cambrian-Early Silurian) and collision (Early Silurian-Devonian). The first stage included deposition of volcanogenic massive sulphide Zn-Cu and stratabound or stratiform Fe and Zn-Pb(-Cu) on continental margins, as well as less economic Nb and Fe in carbonatites, U, Mo, Ni and V in Alum Shales and orthomagmatic Cr, Fe-Ti and Ni(-Cu). The numerous volcanogenic massive sulphides formed during convergence included Early Ordovician Cu-Zn, mature-arc Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe-oxide deposits, Besshi-type deposits dominated by Cu or Zn in gabbro-intruded sediments and minor Cu-Ni(-PGE), Cu-Mo and skarn deposits. The collisional stage is represented by epigenetic deposits including sandstone Pb deposits (Pb, Zn, Ba, F and Cu) and minor vein deposits with variable Au, Ag, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe, As, Sb, W and Mo

"""Preg-robbing"" of gold by carbonaceous matter during the cyanidation of certain types of carbonaceous gold ores is well documented. Recent studies established that ""preg-robbing"" of gold is not limited to carbonaceous matter. Gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite grains was detected and quantified by TOF-LIMS (Time of Flight Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry). Crystallites of pyrite from a number of ores from different geological environments have been shown to have gold on their surface apparently sorbed from the ore forming solutions. Surface gold accounts for significant fractions of the gold head assay. Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant cyanide solutions was also documented, and accounts for significant losses to tailings. Preventative measures are discussed.1.0 IntroductionThe detection and subsequent quantification of gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite particulates came about during routine determinations of the deportment of gold employing the comprehensive mineralogical approach (Chryssoulis and Cabri, 1990). In some pyritic gold ores it was discovered that the sum of the various forms in which gold ""conventionally"" occurs, was short of the gold assay. The mineralogical procedure used involves the independent determination of each fraction of gold, in other words there is no form of gold which is calculated ""by difference"". The systematic shortfall after having added the forms of gold listed in Table 1 led to the inquiry for the 'missing' gold and its discovery on the surface of pyrite grains, such as crystal facets and fractured surfaces.Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant solutions was first described by Lloyd. In his studies, preg-robbing was measured by changes in the solutions/solids gold assays. This paper describes the first application of a direct measurement method for surface gold on pyrite particles from untreated and processed samples, its impact on gold deportment and processing. The advantage of the direct measurement lies in the absence of interference from other forms of gold, leading to more accurate and precise determinations of this unconventional form of gold."
