He goes on to describe Catalan hearths, malleable iron works, Bessemer works, the Blair steel process, and labour.

Sea floor hydrothermal activity in the Okinawa Trough is considered a modern analog to ancient Kuroko-type volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Recent scientific drilling projects at active hydrothermal fields have enabled us to conduct comparative studies on hydrothermal clay minerals between ancient and modern systems. Zonal distributions of clay minerals below the sea floor of an active hydrothermal field have been revealed, which is represented by the distinctive assemblage of clay minerals. Zone 1 consists mainly of montmorillonite and sometimes of kaolinite; Zone 2 consists of chlorite and chlorite-smectite mixed-layer mineral; and Zone 3 is represented by the co-occurrence of illite and chlorite, from shallow to deep. This zonal distribution is likely to be in accordance with that reported previously for the Kuroko-type ore deposit. Similarities are also recognised in chemical compositions of illite and chlorite, which are both abundant clay minerals in the vicinity of the ore deposit. While illite would be formed by interaction with the hydrothermal ore fluid, the formation of Mg-rich chlorite is attributed to Mg metasomatism caused by the involvement of sea water. Further studies, especially focusing on interactions between fluid and solid phases, would significantly promote our understanding of dynamic processes for the formation of VMS depositsCITATION:Ishibashi, J and Miyoshi, Y, 2015. The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. "The large reserves of low-rank coals in the western United States are at a disadvantage in competing with the more mature but less plentiful eastern coals, which are nearer important markets and are more suitable for combustion and coke production. However, low-rank coals generally are amenable to hydrogenation, and the western coals might become an important source of liquid fuels and organic chemicals when petroleum is less plentiful.In view of these facts an the tremendous quantities available, further information on the western coals clearly desirable. The purpose of the work described in this paper was to study the hydrogenation characteristics of some of the low-rank western coals in discontinuous converters. The data obtained in this manner, which are inadequate for predicting the suitability of coals for large-scale continuous hydrogenation, were used as a basis for selecting samples for further study in the Bureau's experimental coal-hydrogenation plant (26, 35). 8/ Because of the general importance of the western coals and recently demonstrated relation between coal hydrogenation and petrograghy (14, 15, 16), the proportions of anthraxylon, (vitrain), translucent attritus, and opaque matter were determined. In some instances samples of anthraxylon were isolated and hydrogenated separately so that their properties might be compared with those of the entire coal. The samples studied include peat, brown coal, lignite, sub-bituminous coals, and low-rank bituminous coals."

Probably over 95 percent of the coal production of the United States depends upon the use of explosives before it can be placed in the railroad car at the mine, and up to the present time it has been impossible to obtain Pry kind of practicable explosive that isn't dangerous unless handled carefully. In other words, no "foolproof" explosives have been found to date and inspection of the accident records of the coal mines of this country indicates that the use of explosives in coal mines has taken a sad toll of lives. ACCIDENTS PROM EXPLOSIVES IN COAL MATES Of the 2,000 to 2,500 persons killed annually in the coal mines if the United States, 100 to 125 have been killed from explosives without an explosion of gas or dust; these accidents have been due to misfires, hangfires, premature blasts, or accidental setting off of explosives through carelessness or otherwise (but chiefly through carelessness in some form). In this type of accident the flame character of the explosive is not necessarily involved, although an unexpected or premature blast is initiated much more easily with black blasting powder, which has a long flame, than with a permissible explosive, which has a flame much shorter and of briefer duration. By far the greater number of such accidents are caused by black blasting powder or dynamite rather than by permissible explosive.

Lithium in the form of metal, salts, and alloys is particularly important because of increasing industrial uses resulting partly from wartime developments. Lithium carbonate and lithium strontium nitrate, which impart a brilliant red color to a flame, are used in pyrotechnics. Lithium chloride and fluoride are used in fluxes for welding aluminum to dissolve the oxide coating on the aluminum and prevent oxidation of the molten metal. Lithium carbonate is used in ceramics in raw alkaline glazes because of its unusual fluxing properties. The use of 9 to 12 percent lithium carbonate permits a marked increase in the amounts of alumina, calcium, and silica that may be Used and results in a more stable glaze with sufficient alkalinity to produce vivid copper blues and other typically alkaline colors. Lithium stearate is used as a grease in airplane engines because of its ability to withstand wide changes in temperature. In view of its great affinity for nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon, lithium has an excellent scavenging action on molten metals. It forms stable nonmetallic compounds of low specific gravity or gases that are eliminated at pouring temperatures. Lithium is generally added to the melt in the form of a lithium-calcium alloy consisting of 50 percent of each ingredient or as an alloy of 98 percent copper and 2 percent lithium. The lithium-calcium alloy added to cast iron before pouring, acts as a scavenger and increases the fluidity of the melt. This alloy also is said to increase the corrosion-resistant properties of stainless steel alloys and to improve their polishing qualities.

"The developing world energy crisis and spiraling fuel costs have created a new public awareness and general acceptance of the need for energy conservation.Plants will have different objectives for an energy conservation program but there appears to be a common approach on how to save electrical energy.Data for a 180tph Rod Mill powered by a 750 hp motor will be used to demonstrate the relationship of energy input and production levels and to seek an optimum operating condition.Energy Conservation:Plants that have examined ways of dealing with the energy situations have concluded that energy conservation has important benefits for industry, including reduced costs, fewer production slowdowns inthe event of fuel shortages and a continued competitive position.There have been some ""startling"" conservation achievements attained through such simple plant maintenance and operating practices as reducing unnecessary lighting in buildings and yards, turning off' equipment not needed at night or over week-ends, through planning maintenance and production schedules to minimize energy use and through improving quality control to eliminate waste.Significant reducti.ons in energy use have been achieved by some rather simple but vigorous maintenance and plant engineering efforts directed at finding and fixing energy ""leaks"" rather than technological advances or major rework or redesign of facilities and equipment.An Energy Conservation Program often must overcome such obstacles as historic operating practices and emp1-oyee indifference, i.e. the ris.ing costs of fuel should result in re-examination of so1ne basic attitudes to energy conservation. "INTRODUCTION A previous paper by H. H. Storch 4 described. three processes for the production of potassium sulphate from polyhalite (K2S01.MgSO1.2CaS04.2H2o), Since these processes depended upon calcination of polyhalite followed by leaching with water at 100°C., the fundamental reactions occurring in these steps were discussed in detail. This paper, which describes processes producing syngenite (K2S04.CaSO4.H2O) and potassium sulphate and gives data concerning the production of by-product magnesia, presents the results of work performed at the Non metallic Minerals Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, maintained at New Brunswick, N. J., in cooperation with Rutgers University.A study of the solubility relationships of the system 5 Ca++ -Mg++ -K+-SO4 = H20 at 25ºC. shows that syngenite is stable in the presence of a concentrated MgSO4 solution, the K2SO : equilibrium concentration being comparatively low (2.6 per cent), The processes described below, which involve the conversion of calcined polyhalite to syngenite, are based on the 25°C. equilibria. It has further been found that syngenite can be decomposed by water at 100ºC, yielding a 9 to 10 per cent K250 solution, the solid phase being potassium calcium pentasulphate (K2SO, 3CaSO.H2O, hereafter referred to as ""pentasulphate""). This latter compound is unstable in the presence of water at 25°C., its decomposition resulting in a solution containing about 3 per cent of K2SO4 and a solid phase consisting of gypsum. This behaviour of syngenite with water at 100°C. and of pentasulphate with water at 25ºC. constitutes the basis of processes for the production of K2SO4 by way of the conversion of calcined polyhalite to syngenite,Syngenite is a product which may be used as a fertilizer per se. As produced in the process to be described, it contains about 50 per cent of K2SO1, and will readily give up its potash content on treatment with water, although the limiting concentration at ordinary temperatures is approximately 3 per cent. This definite but limited solubility should make this product more desirable as a fertilizer then the more concentrated forms of potash salts which have higher solubilities and hence involve the danger or plant injury due to a high local concentration of potash."

Froth flotation of iron ores is one of the most widely used methods to upgrade iron ore into high-grade concentrates. In recent years, reverse cationic flotation of iron ores has been specifically the subject of several studies. Since quartz is the most common gangue mineral in iron ores, understanding the behaviour of this mineral was the main target of the majority of such studies. However, with the depletion of mineral deposits considered rich and easy to process, it has become more common to find iron ores with complex gangue minerals, which are composed not only of quartz but by a variety of silicates. The mineralogical composition of the ore is an important factor for determining reagents and mineral processing parameters. The mineralogical suite of an ore also presents a paramount role for operational optimisation of any given flotation process. Some studies were performed with different types of amphiboles and other Fe-bearing silicates, for example, but the influence of the mineralogical nature of these silicates in reverse cationic flotation has not been fully explored and will be discussed here. Changes in the traditionally used reagent scheme for reverse cationic flotation, generally including alkaline pH values, polysaccharides as depressant (mainly starches) and primary ether amines and diamines, are expected when dealing with iron ores with complex silicate gangue composition.CITATION:Veloso de Melo, C H, Correa de Araujo, A and Filippov, L O, 2017. P&H MinePro Services Canada is supplying Syncrude Canada three more of its model4100BOSS electric mining shovels. The shovels will be delivered during 2003. Syncrude’s oil sands operations already use five P&H shovels. The first 4100BOSS shovel was commissioned at Syncrude’s operation in northern Alberta, Canada in October 2001. The unit loads more than 9 kt/hr (10,000 stph) of unblasted oil sands. Since it began operation, the 4100BOSS has shown a 28% production increase over the four P&H 4100TS shovels also on site.

In Finland Posiva Oy (Company) is responsible for implementing the final disposal programme for spent nuclear fuel of its owners. Company is preparing for the geological disposal in Olkiluoto crystalline bedrock. Excavation will be executed using drill and blast method. Method unavoidably causes variable excavation damaged zone (EDZ) on tunnel surfaces. The EDZ constitutes a risk for long term safety and therefore good control methodology of the blasting technique is required. The thicker the EDZ, the greater is the likelihood for detrimental transport pathways for ground water to transport radio nuclides, should those be present.

"During installation of pile, a soil column is formed inside the pile. For small depths, the height of the soil column typically equals to the penetration depth (full coring state). As the penetration depth increases, the developed internal shear stresses become larger and reduce the amount of soil to penetrate. At the same time, the soil in pile at the bottom is compacted. This will continue until at a given moment, the soil column is a soil plug, and does not stop moving relative to the pile. This is because the shear stresses developed in the interior of the pile are greater than the load-bearing capacity of the ground.This paper presents the results obtained from 40 model pile tests carried out to assess the effect of soil plug on the model pile capacity. The piles are embedded in sand of different densities with different lengths of piles and types of pile-ends. The model tests are divided into two parts according to the type of end of the pipe pile used in the model pile test. The first part consists of 32 model open-ended piles with different lengths of soil plug inside the pile. The second part consists of 8 model closed-ended piles.It was concluded that open-ended pipe piles behave as a closed-ended if the soil plug formed inside piles in state partial plug or full plug. Length of soil plug depends on the type of installation and relative density. The pile load carrying capacity in dense sand is several times greater than those in medium sands especially in cases of closed ended piles or open-ended since the pipe pile can produce external and internal skin friction in addition to end bearing resistance that makes the total pile capacity close to that of closed-ended pile. Whether open-ended piles are driven or pressed in the fully coring - fully unplugged mode or in the partially plugged mode, the plug does contribute to static pile base capacity."

"Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are:1. the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency;2. the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids;3. the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and4. the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system.In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system through mechanical modification as follows:•, CCD1 has a modified rake mechanism that now allows central vertical lift of 600 mm;•, CCD1 has forced dilution using the Outokumpu Turbodil® technology and replacing the E-Duc® technology of Eimco;The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1 per cent (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2 per cent improvement in the circuit underflow density.The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil®dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary solution neutralisation improvements."

La voladura de rocas es la operación minera más importante de la producción minera, dado que provee materiales de calidad para el equipo de carguío, transporte y conminución. En este sentido, el presente texto señala el método temporal alternativo para el diseño de malla y carga de la voladura en la mina Cuajone. El diseño de la malla se realizó considerando los parámetros geotécnicos del explosivo y del equipo de perforación, mientras que para el cálculo de carga se utiliza el criterio de "velocidad pico de partícula" que originalmente fue desarrollado para el control de daños a estructuras por efectos de la vibración derivado por la voladura. Finalmente, para minimizar el daño ocasionado a la pared del banco a ser minado, la ejecución debe efectuarse a través de métodos de voladura controlada a través del equipo empleado en voladura de producción normal.

O processo de soldagem de pontos por resistência elétrica é uma técnica econômica e adequada para a união de chapas, pela alta velocidade e adaptabilidade, torna-se um método amplamente difundido para a produção em massa. É utilizado principalmente em carrocerias de automóveis por apresentar elevada eficiência e qualidade. Este artigo analisa as diferenças apresentadas nas microestruturas de pontos de solda produzidos através do controle da refrigeração do eletrodo. Para garantir a qualidade de uma junta soldada e aumentar a vida útil do eletrodo é importante que os parâmetros empregados na soldagem sejam bem ajustados, para que o ponto de solda também apresente características que irão garantir uma boa performance do produto final. O objetivo deste trabalho é fazer a comparação da qualidade dos pontos de solda produzidos, além de avaliar a estrutura formada em diferentes temperaturas do eletrodo no momento da soldagem.

In the extractive industry the term ‘continuous improvement’ (CI) usually means procurement of the latest state of the art equipment. This is generally perceived as the only way to add further value to the supply chain, with the driving philosophy of increased tonnage to dilute operational costs. However, not all market places can facilitate this approach. RJB lives in a fiercely competitive market and has targeted the standard efficiency drivers of rationalisation and stock management with a vengeance; and also operate CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System), RCM (Routine Condition Monitoring)and CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) methodologies. Ultimately though, these systems are only as good as the people who operate and manage them and to add further value without procurement, people must be re-introduced back into the operation. Through TPM (Total Productive Mining), that is what RJB have set out to do.

"ABSTRACT: In the year 2010 the State of Denmark together with the Municipality of Copenhagen, launched a very important and complex Project : the complete construction of a new double Subway Line :the CITYRINGEN.Copenhagen is the capital with a metropolitan population of 1,9 million.This line is like a ring placed in the very town center which includes all the most historical and monumental buildings and churches, with a total length of 17 km, and the presence of 17 stations plus 4 service shafts.The buildings have been built in the last centuries in an area where the groundwater is near to the surface and there are lakes and channels: the techniques adopted were advanced for those times, but limited as far as regards settlements and resistance to horizontal movements.The soil consists in 2 main groups.1.Upper sediments of the glacial ages : thickness total = 5-20 m composed by clay- silt-sand-gravelcobbles- granite boulders and flint in blocs and in layers : frequency and size of these obstacles wherenot determined.2.Limestone layers : 2a. upper limestone : highly fractured ,highly permeable2b.Itermediate limestone : less fractured, medium permeability.2c. Lower limestone : almost not fractured, low permeability.2d Bryozoan limestone : composed by fossils with microscopic dimensionsIn all the limestone formations there are important layers of flint , having thickness variable up to 3 m and important extensions. Water : in a part of the areas of the Cityringen the water is drinkable and utilized in the public waternet.Pollution: there are polluted zones due to previous industrial activities. Benzene areas have been identified, and for those areas special protections against pollution have been implemented.METROSELSKABET ,the public owner of the Cityringen,has set as priority to operate for the construction of the Cityringen the full protection of the environment and the respect of all the stakeholders :Very strong limits for the exhausted gas emissions have been introduced, by far stronger than those applied from the State of Denmark, very strong limits for the acceptable noise emission. And last but not least very important safety measures and procedure to avoid any accident on site."

It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. Cupellation Process.-Lead button is re-oxidised to litharge leaving a gold and silver bead.

The iron ore industry has reached the end of an unprecedented period of expansion triggered by China’s demand for iron ore. Lower ore prices have led producers to focus on optimising mining operations while extracting the maximum tonnage from the infrastructure presently in place or from projects already underway. A rising global surplus is expected to further force ore prices down and lead to output curtailments, which in turn will help to restore market balance. However, investment in the development of new resources and the development of new infrastructure will inevitably become necessary. Making the right decisions in relation to future processing infrastructure in a climate of uncertain demand and price volatility will not be as straightforward as in the past, where expanding the scale of a proposed operation has been the answer to ensuring economic viability. Overall cost and environmental pressures particularly in relation to wet processing will dominate the decision-making process. IMP Technologies (IMPTEC) has anticipated the need for a dry low cost processing alternative, which can open the way for the development of lower grade magnetite deposits and ensure the sustainability of processing in Australia. The lower grade magnetite deposits are generally fine grained and require grinding to p80 of 30 to 40 microns. Historically, the cost of grinding to these sizes has been and remains a key factor determining the economic viability of a magnetite processing operation. The IMPTEC Super-fine Crusher and Cyclomag Separator are the key components of a proposed radically simplified dry processing alternative, which addresses both cost and environmental issues. Liquid fuel oils possess certain advantages over solid fuels. Ease in handling, precision temperature control, and almost complete freedom from ash are among those considered when a liquid fuel is selected for use in industrial processing. In some instances these fuels are desirable because more heating units can e packed in a Given space where space is limited, as on snips. In other cases the' are chosen because of lower actual cost per British thermal unit absorbed, or for control of the flame to increase the capacity of furnaces, as in steel and refining.
