"With the increasing demand for minerals, technologies to maximize mineral recovery are paramount to a mine’s economic success. Many mining process waters have the potential to form calcium-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, the solution to inhibit these deposits is the implementation of a chemical antiscalant program. This paper examines the application of a fouling analyzer to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scale in mining process streams. The fouling data can be used to compare antiscalant programs and to optimize antiscalant feedrates. Case studies validate the ability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery processes.INTRODUCTION The mining industry uses significant quantities of water. From quarrying, to crushing, to flotation, leaching, and refining, water is often the integral motive force to move slurries, separate or agglomerate fines, and extract and purify minerals. As well, water is used in a number of ancillary applications at mines, including dust suppression, gas scrubbing, and utility processes such as boiler, cooling, and waste water operations. For many processes, the quality of water being used is inconsequential. However, for certain processes, such as flotation, leaching, and desorption / stripping, water quality plays a key role in the ability of the operation to economically recover the target minerals. Dissolved solids such as calcium and magnesium salts can concentrate in process waters, exceed their solubility limits, and precipitate as scale on metal surfaces such as feed and transfer pumps, piping, and equipment. Some of the more common scales that form in mining operations include calcium carbonate (CaCO3, or calcite) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4, or gypsum), and to a lesser extent, calcium and magnesium silicate compounds. Any scale that deposits in a process stream will negatively impact mineral recovery, and increase the operational costs of the mine site. Whether it is acid washing a scaled heat exchanger in a carbon strip at a gold operation, replacing plugged emitter tubes in a leaching operation, or hydroblasting process lines in a scrubber unit, there are costs associated with labor, cleaning chemicals, repairs, and replacement parts. These costs pale in comparison to the potential costs of downtime and lost production, should the scale deposits occur in a process that is critical to the recovery of the target mineral."

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, converter, nickel, matte, distribution Metallic elements occupy a wide range in granulated nickel converter matte phases. The distribution of these metallic elements, particularly during crystallization path events, appears to be poorly understood. The present study serves to investigate the distribution of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Pb between nickel-sulphide, copper-sulphide, and alloy phases. A novel combination of thermo-chemical modelling, electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis was applied to understand crystallization path events and the associated metallic element distribution. This study has demonstrated that major Ni incorporated during copper-sulphide crystallization would serve to mobilize minor Co towards distribution in copper-sulphide phases. In addition, solid solution substitution of Cu by Ni is manifested by compositional zoning of copper-sulphide phases. The role played by Ni during alloy crystallization suggests that minor Co was also mobilized, along with an increase in principal Ni. Fe, by contrast, seems to be incompatible with principal Ni. In addition, solid solution substitution of Ni with PGEs and Cu is manifested by compositional zoning of NiCu-alloy phases.

Small scale mining (SSM) has been going on for a long time in Ghana. SSM was legalized by the PNDC Law 218, 1989. Since then there have been numerous gains from the SSM industry. The SSM is organized locally by the concession owner who engages people to work for the gold which he buys. Small scale miners (SSMs) use crudely made sluices in Ghana and, therefore, their production falls below what is expected. The SSMs work in groups and not as cooperatives, as they do in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Legalization of SSM has curbed gold smuggling considerably because a gold marketing entity is available. SSM poses certain environmental problems like pollution of water bodies and soils by mercury and indiscriminate digging of pits.

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the "two flow drawdown" technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to improve technology for the recovery of strategic and critical metals, such as cobalt, nickel, and chromium, that are lost in bulk and particulate superalloy-type scrap because it has not been possible to process mixed contaminated scrap efficiently. The research approach involves melting and casting mixed superalloy scrap into soluble anodes for electrodeposition of Ni-Co alloys by controlled-potential electrolysis. The initial experimental results described in this report are from electrolytic tests us-ing alloy anodes cast from elemental nickel, cobalt, and chromium, the main constituent metals of superalloys. Baseline data and operating parameters are necessary for Ni-Co and Ni-Co-Cr alloys before detailed experiments can be conducted on the more complex superalloy scrap. This basic research assessed the effects of cathode potential, S04:CI electrolyte ratio, electrolyte pH, stirring rate, deposition time, cathode current density, and chromium concentration on cathode current efficiency, alloy deposit composition, and deposition potential at a cell temperature of 55° C.

A carga de laminação é um dos principais fatores que provocam o desgaste dos cilindros. Identificar quanto e como é o desgaste ocorrido durante o processo é um problema que a indústria de produtos laminados enfrenta há muitos anos, sendo motivo de muitos estudos nessa área. Esse desgaste, além de gerar custo para o fabricante, gera uma deformação no perfil no passe do laminador, fazendo com que a qualidade do produto final seja afetada. Deseja-se, com este trabalho, detectar e identificar o desgaste ocorrido nos cilindros de um laminador a quente de produtos não-planos na sequência de passe de seção redonda-oval-redonda, durante a produção, ou seja, online. Utilizando-se métodos de cálculo semi-experimentais e ferramentas baseadas em redes neurais, desenvolveu-se um sistema híbrido capaz de prever o desgaste dos canais dos cilindros. Foram realizadas inúmeras leituras dos valores de algumas das principais variáveis durante o processo de fabricação desses produtos laminados de uma grande empresa do ramo. Os resultados medidos foram analisados e foi gerada uma base de dados para a criação do modelo de previsão do desgaste nos canais, baseado em redes neurais artificiais e modelos semi-empíricos de cálculo do perfil de desgaste. O modelo foi testado na planta e os resultados foram bastante precisos.

Mexican epithermal deposits can be broadly grouped into two types based on their contained metals, distribution, associated igneous rocks and fluid inclusion compositions. Silver-gold deposits (eg Tayoltita) mostly occur in the western part of northernMexico where host rocks consist of Eocene, intermediate composition volcanic and intrusive rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralising fluids were <300¦C and dilute (=3 eq. wt. % NaCl). In contrast, silver-lead-zinc deposits (eg Fresnillo) mostly occur in the central part of northern Mexico where they are temporally associated with Oligocene-Miocene volcanic rocks and intrusions of felsic composition, but commonly hosted within underlying Paleozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralizing fluids ranged from 200 to 400 ¦C and were saline (=10 eq. wt. % NaCl). The distribution of these two deposit types, crosscutting major crustal sutures, and the close spatial-temporal relationships between mineralisation and magmatism, together suggest that magmatic processes were more important in the formation of mineralising solutions, as a source of both ligands and metals, than the segments of crust hosting deposits.

A campanha dos refratários à base de carbono aplicados como revestimento de trabalho de diversos equipamentos siderúrgicos depende da soma de diversos fatores como resistência à corrosão, resistência à oxidação do carbono, estabilidade termomecânica, entre outros. Durante a etapa de aquecimento inicial de revestimentos refratários novos ocorre a oxidação prematura do carbono presente no revestimento refratário, reduzindo a vida útil do revestimento precocemente. Para reduzir a oxidação precoce do carbono foi desenvolvido um novo coating cerâmico que atua como uma eficiente barreira física, reduzindo o contato do oxigênio da atmosfera de aquecimento com o carbono presente no refratário. O coating desenvolvido possui uma fase ligante com pega química ativada termicamente e possui como carga refratária um composto sílico-aluminoso com elevada estabilidade térmica. Os resultados laboratoriais de avaliação de desempenho revelaram que com a aplicação do novo coating desenvolvido reduz-se a oxidação prematura do carbono em até 77% e elevase a vida útil do revestimento em alguns casos em até 15%. O coating desenvolvido revelou possuir excelente desempenho quanto a proteção do refratário MgO-C contra a oxidação do carbono que ocorre durante a etapa de aquecimento de equipamentos com refratários novos, comprovando sua aplicabilidade em diversos equipamentos siderúrgicos que possuem revestimentos refratários à base de carbono.

In Eastern Kentucky, the Darby seam has had an extensive history of coal bumps and pillar bursts. The combination of high overburden, strong rock and coal, subjacent and superjacent mines, and retreat mining has produced incidences of violent pillar failure. The influence of these factors on pillar stability and the potential to bump is illustrated in two case histories. In the first case history, a bump occurred unexpectedly during the retreat mining of a five heading continuous haulage panel. Alternative cut sequences and pillar dimensions were analyzed to identify a geometry that would reduce the potential for future coal bumps or bounces during retreat mining. The viability of the alternatives was constrained by the reach of the continuous haulage system, the overburden depth, and the presence of thick sandstones in the main roof. Each alternative was numerically modeled cut-by-cut to examine the mechanism of stress transfer, as a pillar row is retreat mined. This approach highlighted which cuts were being made in highly stressed portions of a pillar and therefore more prone to coal outbursts. Validation of the numerical modeling was accomplished by comparing the cuts where bumps and outbursts had occurred underground to the highly stressed cuts shown within the models. Recommendations of the barrier pillar width between adjacent panels, pillar dimensions, and changes in the retreat mining sequence were proposed based upon the overburden thickness, geology, and the result of the numerical modeling. The second case history documents a nine-entry panel 3,600-feet long that was retreat mined a distance of 2,064-feet without a significant roof fall or roof-floor convergence. Mine management became concerned about the potential for a coal bump or a large roof collapse within the gob and the resulting air blast. The stress on the pillar line and within the remnant pillars in the gob was quantified through numerical modeling. Changes in mining practices on the current panel were implemented to avoid a bump in the active panel. A barrier was established between the current and the future panels to protect the future panel against abutment pressures from the void area. A change in pillar centers was proposed in the adjacent panel to absorb the side abutment pressure from the gob of the active panel.

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of ?topping off? the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

There remains considerable controversy in the industry regarding precision type detonators and where the end user can benefit from their use. In spite of the fact that electronic detonators and other prototypes were tested over one decade ago, explosive suppliers have hedged on full scale production for many reasons. Although some of the reasons were based on solid economics, others were strongly influenced by shear internal resistance within the corporate objectives, ultimate fear of market rejection, indecision as to what degree of precision was required and limited data on defining the real benefits to the end user.

Rate minima are encountered in the reduction of magnetite with hydrogen. In a certain temperature zone, the reaction rate decreases with rise in temperature. This is inexplicable by classical kinetic theories; neither is a transition in reduction mechanism suitable for interpreting the observed behavior, This anomaly can be fully explained by hypothesizing two species of chemisorbed hydrogen with different adsorption coefficients and activation energies for adsorption. Competition between two energetic states of adsorption occurs with temperature rise, with the low energy state predominating below the anomalous temperature zone and the high energy state above it. The presence of two possible adsorption sites appears to be characteristic for oxidic adsorbents.

IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some inillioils of tons of rich, copper-gold ore, averaging about 45% to 50% silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux.were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap, limestone, were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting operations started, with one' furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore fro:m. the mine, containing very little silica. When the second, furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from, small aeposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Eabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required viz, 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. In some parts of the world, vibrators are used extensively for different types of foundation engineering projects. If used correctly and in suitable soils then vibratory pile driving for example is very efficient. However, soil conditions and the installation procedure have great significance for the driving resistance and affect the bearing capacity of vibrated piles. Also the intensity of ground vibrations which are transmitted to the surrounding soil is affected by the vibration process. In spite of the increasing use of vibrators and the rapid development of vibrator technology, many aspects of pile-soil interaction are not yet understood. In order to asses the importance of factors, which govern pile installation (and extraction), it is necessary to consider the entire chain of vibration energy transmission from the vibration source to the pile, the interaction between the vibrating pile and the soil and the wave propagation in the subsoil, Fig. 1. Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

"Abstract Pile foundation is one of fundamental techniques to improve the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of superstructures. Wide varieties of piles having various shape, size and material were developed and have been applied to a lot of construction projects throughout the world. The deep mixing method, an in-situ admixture stabilization method, was developed in 1970s in Japan and the European countries, and has been frequently applied to many construction projects for various improvement purposes such as increasing bearing capacity and horizontal resistance, reducing ground settlement, preventing liquefaction and so on. The design methods, execution procedure and quality control and assurance (QC/QA) of the method are standardized or specified in many countries. These standards, specification and/or technical manual have been a remarkable contribution to spread the techniques throughout the world. The QC/QA is one of the major concerns for clients and engineers who have poor or no experience of the technologies. In order to assure the high quality of deep mixing work in the global market, it is necessary to establish the concept of QC/QA and correlate the output of different procedures. Upon the request by the organizing committee of the DFI-EFFC International Conference on Piling & Deep Foundations, the authors conducted survey of the specifications and standards on the piling and deep mixing technologies in Asian countries. In this manuscript, the results of survey are briefly introduced by comparing these specifications and standards.IntroductionThe pile foundation is one of fundamental techniques to improve the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of superstructures. Wide varieties of piles having various shape, size and material were developed and have been applied to a lot of construction projects throughout the world. In Japan, steel pipe piles are mainly constructed by hammer driven in port construction. On the other hand, precast pre-stressed concrete piles or cast-in-place piles are mainly used in on land construction. When precast pre-stressed concrete piles are constructed, piles are usually set by inner excavation method because of preventing noise and vibration problems. More than 50 years ago, noise and vibration problems had not been serious problem in Japan, but around 50 years ago, they became serious and now less noise and vibration construction methods are used for pile construction on land in Japan. In Asian countries, though piles used for construction have a lot of variety, precast pre-stressed piles are commonly used. In this report, execution controls of construction methods of steel pipe piles and precast concrete piles are mainly considered."

[The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals, functioning under the sponsorship of the American Society for Testing Materials and the rules of the American Standards Association, in its 1934 report recommended to the American Society for Testing-Materials that Specifications for Classification of Coals by Rank be adopted as tentative. These specifications, slightly modified as recommended by the Sectional Committee, in its 1935 report,6 wore approved as tentative standards by the society in 1935. The specifications rover the classification of coals according; to their degree of metamorphism, or progressive alteration, in the natural eerie s from lignite to anthracite. The basic scheme of classification is according to fired carbon and calorific value (expressed in B.t.u.) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis. The higher-rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon on the dry basis, and the lower-rank coals according to B.t.u. on the moist basis, that is, containing its natural bed moisture but free of visible surface moisture. "SynopsisThe Kanichee open pit mine and milling complex is situated approximately four air miles north-west of Ternagami, Northern Ontario, in Strathy Township. Mining and milling production commenced in January 1974.Milling throughput currently is at a rated capacity of 500 tons per day, seven days per week. A bulk nickel-copper sulphide concentrate is produced, and is trucked daily to the smelter at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Falconbridge, Ontario, some 120 road miles from Kanichee. Concentrate grades produced are in the order of 4.0% Ni and 8.0% Cu, with corresponding recoveries of 68-70% nickel and 86-90% copper. Stage additions of 100% guar-gurn solution reagent to the flotation cells for depression of talcose minerals, proved to be the major break-through for optimizing metallurgical performance.2. HistoryThe present Kanichee Mining property is known to old-timers in the Temagami area as the former Cuniptau Mine. Several attempts were made in the mid '30's and 40's to extract the ore at a profit, but each effort resulted in failure.In 1933-36, Cuniptau Mines Development Co. Limited, later called Cuniptau Mines Limited, sank a 245-foot vertical shaft and completed 2,200 feet of lateral work on the 100-140 and the 225 foot levels. Fifteen tons of ore were sent for testwork to the Mines Branch, Ottawa, Ontario.Cuniptau Mines Limited, in 1936, milled some 3,000 tons, and the resulting concentrate was put through a pilot smelter situated on the present mine site. Metallurgically, the smelting results were not encouraging, primarily due to the high melting point of the talcose minerals in the concentrate. From the period 1937-48, minor exploration work was done by Ontario Mining Corporation, Ontario Nickel Mines Limited, and Trebor Mines Limited. During the period 1948-49, 128 diamond drill holes, totalling 40,900 feet were evaluated by Trebor Mines Limited. In 1961, the name was changed to Ajax Minerals Limited, during 1968, five diamond drill holes were sunk, totalling 1,700 feet. Since that period the property has remained idle."
