Sishen Iron Ore Mine is situated 280 km north-west of Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine produces and sells high quality iron ore of various specifications to various national and international clients. The saleable product is derived from the blending and beneficiation of different types and qualities of hematite iron ore. This paper documents the new developments which were implemented (or are in the process of being implemented) on the mine in the long-term planning, medium-term planning, grade control and material tracking in the beneficiation plant with special attention being paid to the quality of the final, saleable product. The process starts with the long-term planning where the pit shell and pit optimization is determined by Whittle 4X. New developments include the introduction of a linear programming based scheduling system to enhance the long-term schedule generated by Whittle 4X. The LP route was decided on in order to take into account all the constraining factors of the final product that could not be configured in Whittle. To complement this the XPAC Auto Scheduler scheduling package was introduced to do the medium-term mine scheduling. This 18-month rolling plan includes cost parameters to enable the planner to extract a detailed operational budget from the scheduling while ensuring that production standards are maintained and grade constraints are met. The existing grade control system was enhanced with GPS capabilities and a computer system to do material tracking. The high precision GPS system introduced on the shovels allows for the accurate control of the loading procedures at the mining face. Because of the complicated geology and grade composition of blasting blocks it is imperative to accurately differentiate between different materials in the same blasting block and being able to excavate that with the loading equipment. The GPS system on the trucks allows for accurate location monitoring of dumping in order to keep track of specific material types. The state-of-the-art material tracking system developed for Sishen will enable the grade control officer to keep track and record various parameters of the material from its in situ position in the blasting blocks, through the crusher and onto different stockpiles, in various stages of the beneficiation process and onto the blending beds, into the dispatching trains and eventually into the ships for international distribution. These developments elevate the Sishen planning and grade control systems to a new level of service excellence from which management can obtain accurate and timely information on product status. It also enables Sishen to maximize resource utilization while still complying with the tough market constraints.

The objective of this task was to perform theoretical analyses related to identifying and increasing the understanding of wireless propagation mechanisms in mines, and for predicting the performance ranges and limitations of proposed systems. This was to be achieved by building on and extending previous ADL work* and utilizing experimental data as they became available in the radio frequency bands of interest. B. TASKS Theoretical radio wave propagation investigations undertaken on this task centered on three areas. The first area dealt with extending previous UHF wireless propagation results*: to estimate the losses caused by the presence of haulage vehicles such as trains in coal mine tunnels; to estimate the propagation losses and wireless communication ranges expected along a longwall coal face tunnel; and to assess the applicability of previous analytical approximations to tunnels having reduced crossectional dimensions, such as those found in low coal and in the presence of haulage vehicles. The second area dealt with the development of a suitable propagation model to adequately explain the unexpected, highly favorable LF to MF band wireless radio wave propagation behavior experimentally observed in Consolidation Coal Co.'s Ireland mine. The third area dealt with the formulation of a model for evaluating the overall system transfer function and transmitter requirements for a hoist shaft LF communications system, taking into account the hoist rope/shaft transmission line characteristics, the cage and sheave wheel line terminations, the signal inductive couplers, and hoist shaft signal and noise data.

A high calcium fluid-bed combustor ash has been shown to be an effective binder at dosages of 1 to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 Newtons/pellet (5.0 pounds force/pellet), which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. Addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2% of the total powder weight increased the strength of dried pellets by as much as 22% compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

Various methods have been used to evaluate the effectiveness of shields in place. The most common method used is static recording of leg pressures by visually examining pressure gauges. In an effort to more closely examine the shield cycle and therefore the shield effectiveness, Jim Walter Resources has implemented a program of monitoring utilizing a polycorder system which is capable of recording convergence and pressure measurements on a continuous basis. This paper will discuss two longwall panels at Jim Walter Resources which have been monitored.

The title of “the world’s biggest volume-produced hydraulic breaker,” that was held for more than a decade by the Atlas HB 7,000, changed hands with the launch of Atlas Copco’s HB 10,000 at bauma 2007. A service weight of 10 t (11 st) and up to 50 percent higher productivity represent major steps toward a new market segment: the use of hydraulic breakers as cost-efficient production machines for primary breaking and as a true alternative to drilling and blasting. The HB 10,000 has all the technical features developed by Atlas Copco for its hydraulic breakers and includes: StartSelect — the breaker’s start-up and shut-down behavior can be adapted to the conditions. AutoControl that ensures an optimized balance of impact energy and impact frequency to maximize percussive performance. Auto-Control also reduces blank firing force and controls energy recovery. PowerAdapt — if oil pressure is too high, the breaker shuts down automatically. This prevents downtime and is particularly useful when breakers are used on different carriers. DustProtector II — a combination of multiple strippers prevents abrasive rock dust and foreign bodies from penetrating the lower breaker section. Conti- Lube II — the automatic lubrication unit guarantees optimal lubrication of the breaker at all times.

Reduction of CO2 emissions is the key driving force behind the development and implementation of new solutions for energy production. One solution is circulating fluidized bed (CFB) combustion technology combined with a high-efficiency once-through water-steam cycle. Foster Wheeler's CFB technology is today commercially available in capacities up to 800 MWe with ultra-supercritical steam parameters. Simultaneously, the Flexi-Burn® CFB technology is being developed to provide capability of flexible operation in air firing and oxy-combustion for carbon capture. CFB technology can offer an attractive solution for the reduction of CO2 emissions, owing to advantages such as fuel flexibility and low emissions that the air-fired CFB technology offers today. Pilot test facilities provide information about the performance of CFB oxy-combustion technology, and the acquired knowledge is being incorporated in boiler modelling and design tools. One of the European R&D initiatives on carbon capture and storage (CCS) is the Technological Centre for CO2 Capture and Transport, which is supported by the Spanish Government through the Fundación Ciudad de la Energía (CIUDEN). CIUDEN is a research and development institution created by the Spanish administration in 2006 and fully conceived for collaborative research in CO2 capture, transportation, and storage. The Technology Development Centre for CO2 Capture and Transport comprises two technologies on oxy-combustion: pulverized coal (PC) and circulating fluidized bed (CFB). This paper will focus on the design and main characteristics of the 30 megawatt-hour thermal capacity (MWth) oxy-CFB boiler. Foster Wheeler is the technology provider of the Flexi-Burn CFB unit, for which commissioning has been completed in the first quarter of 2011. The CFB unit design allows operation either under conven¬tional combustion with air or under oxy-fuel conditions. The size of this experimental boiler is sufficient to allow the scaling of the results to commercial units. In this way, multiple fuels and operating conditions can be tested economically. The results will validate the design of a future 330 MWe supercritical Oxy-Combustion Power Station (OXY-CFB-300 Compostilla Project) intended to demonstrate the CCS technology at commercial scale. The Compostilla OXY-CFB-300 Project is one of the six CCS demonstration projects funded under the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR) of the EU. The project is based on a future 330 MWe CFB supercritical oxy-combustion plant, with CO2 storage in a deep geological formation. The first phase of the project, granted by the EEPR programme and led by the Spanish utility ENDESA, includes all studies and characterization work needed on CO2 capture, transport, and storage, as well the costs, financing, and regulatory and permitting required, prior to the final investment decision for the construction phase of the plant by the end of 2012.

White Pine Mine section designated for exhaust emissions studies. The MTU Mine Air Monitoring Laboratory was used to gather temperature and C02 concentration data at 10 locations. The data substantiate the presence of strong buoyant forces of the hot exhaust gases which result in stratification in dead end headings. Diesel mine-vehicle tailpipe emissions were monitored in the laboratory by a portable tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) assembled for in-mine use. The results were compared with simultaneous measurements by standard laboratory exhaust monitoring instruments. These results indicate that accurate field source quality control measurements can be obtained for CO2, CO and NO but NO2 results were low for all engine conditions. Diesel pollutant concentration data from the Orchard Valley Mine were analyzed and compared with data collected earlier in the White Pine and Brushy Creek mines. Lognormal frequency distributions and CO2-based concentration ratios and correlations were calculated. In the three mines compared, pollutant concentrations were distributed similarly, and concentrations appear to be controlled to present standards.

The Prince Lyell orebody at Mount Lyell Mine has a rich mining history commencing with the open pit in 1935, which transitioned underground in 1972. Between 1972 and 2014 a total of 64 Mt was mined underground as the mine extended from 210 m to 1100 m below surface. As the depth increased, three separate transitions in the mining method occurred to meet the changing geotechnical conditions, ore grade, mining costs and metal prices. The first was open stoping with pillar recovery in 1972, followed by front caving and longitudinal sublevel caving (1995), and finally transverse sublevel caving (2004 to 2014). This paper provides an overview of key geotechnical and planning milestones relating to the evolution of the mining method including underground stability, gravity flow, cavability and subsidence. Key aspects of the mine design, geotechnical parameters and rock mass response are described and critiqued with reference to observational, numerical and empirical methods.CITATION:Sharrock, G B and Cuello, D A, 2016. Background The resources of the Gippsland Basin include not only the coal and oil for which it is well known, but also the tourism resource and the quality of life which it offers its residents and visitors. To manage this group of resources requires an understanding and ability to predict the consequences of possible developments. The water of the streams and estuaries as a key component as it is both a resource and the means for transporting wastes from one area to another. To aid in the resource planning process there is a need for models of the estuarine hydraulic processes. This paper describes an appropriate modelling technique. Resource use conflicts may arise from developments in the catchment upstream of the estuarine reach. For example the diversion of water for domestic and industrial use will change the velocity and salinity structure of the downstream estuary. In turn these changes will affect sediment distribution and deposition patterns and may impose stress on the biological communities and ultimately on the fisheries resources and water quality. The manager of an estuarine system may have expertise in ecology, hydraulics or another of the specialist disciplines involved, but commonly will not. The manager will identify needs for resource and development and the broad options required to satisfy them. The manager will use these studies as the basis for his/her selection of the option for execution. Thus a model for'use by the manager of an estuarine system must have the following properties: (i) The model must be sufficiently accurate to throw up all the likely options. (ii) The model must be capable of being run by the manager, interactively, to answer `what if' questions. This requirement implies a simple code andhardware limited to a personal computer or possibly a desk top work station. (iii) The model must be robust so that unrealistic input oes not generate apparently useful output, and no output is generated for cases where the model is not designed to give results. (iv) The model must be capable of being used as part of a modelling system comprising models of all the geographic and demographic components

The Neves-Corvo copper-tin mine is the highest-grade large-tonnage copper operation in the world and is now arguably the most significant producing base-metal mine in Europe, rating in the top ten world producers of both copper and tin. A description is given of the initial exploration work and the development of the project from the orebody discovery in the Iberian Pyrite Belt of southern Portugal in 1977 to full operating capacity in 1990. The chronological account includes discussion of the main organisational, financial, technical and environmental decisions and of the various difficulties encountered, and the challenges of the future are identified. COLUMBIUM (niobium) and tantalum are similar refractory metals with closely related properties and uses and close association in ore deposits. Until recently both metals, particularly columbium, were essentially laboratory curiosities. However, since the beginning of World War II, applied technology, under the impetus of national security requirements, has realized many chemical, electronic, nucleonic, and missile and rocketry applications, where high temperature or corrosive environments require the use of columbium or tantalum. At the same time, advances in these fields have resulted in intensive research on the geological distribution, resources, metallurgy, and properties of these two metals; their alloys and compounds; and the development of a full-fledged columbium-tantalum industry. The future appears to promise continued acceleration in such studies and ever-increasing demand for these elements. The raw material supplies of columbium are abundant, and the extractive metallurgy of columbium is well enough advanced to assure adequate supplies of the element at reasonable prices to meet any projected demands. Although the extractive metallurgy of tantalum is similarly well developed, raw material supplies are so limited that, lacking new ore discoveries, an increase in demand to five times the 1959 level would severely tax ore-production facilities. Approximately 120 tons of tantalum and about one-half as much columbium was produced in 1959. Additional quantities are consumed as compounds or additive alloys such as ferrocolumbium and ferrotantalum columbium (55).3

Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal analisar os dados obtidos através dos ensaios a flexão em 40 corpos de provas cerâmicos preparados de acordo com a NBR 13818:1997 e aplicar uma probabilidade estatística para cálculo da resistência à fratura. O modulo de resistência à flexão para a ruptura de cada corpo de prova foi calculado de acordo com a fórmula apresentada no anexo C da norma citada, e aplicada posteriormente no lote à estatística para distribuição de Weibull. Os resultados obtidos não apresentaram uma variação significativa na resistência mecânica à flexão para os corpos de provas sem umidade em relação aos submetidos à imersão em água.

Neste trabalho, foi desenvolvido um modelo de elementos finitos para simular o primeiro passe da laminação de tiras a quente de aços C-Mn, durante a etapa de acabamento, via DEFORMTM3D. As dimensões e condições de processo foram obtidas a partir de dados industriais descritos na literatura. Utilizando-se o modelo termomecânico, foram feitas análises de sensibilidade por meio de alterações no fator de atrito e coeficiente de transferência de calor por condução, uma vez que não há um conhecimento preciso dos valores destes parâmetros para o processo simulado. Com isto, foram analisadas as alterações que a mudança destes parâmetros podem causar na carga e temperatura de laminação, perfil de deformação, fração recristalizada e tamanho de grão. O aumento do atrito provoca um aumento na carga de laminação, na homogeneidade do perfil de deformação e menor tamanho de grão. O aumento no coeficiente de transferência de calor, diminui a temperatura superficial da tira, o tamanho de grão e gera um aumento na carga de laminação. Assim, neste estudo foi mostrado a eficácia do modelo em predizer o comportamento do aço no processo de laminação a quente.

Lumwana is an open pit Copper mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia approximately 80 km west from the provincial capital of Solwezi, approximately 300 km northwest from the Copperbelt and 700 km northwest from the national capital of Lusaka. The mine has two major Copper deposits: Malundwe and Chimiwungo. Copper mineralization includes Chalcopyrite, Bornite and Chalcocite. In addition to Copper, these deposits also contain the undesirable element Uranium contained in vein hosted and disseminated Uranite. The processing plant was designed using conventional technologies: semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill for grinding, and mechanical cells for rougher and cleaner flotation. Soon after commissioning in early 2009, it was recognised that two stages of conventional cleaning were unable to produce plant final Copper concentrates with the desired Uranium grades. Studies have shown that a significant quantity of liberated and fine Uranium particles (up to 80-90%) is recovered with the concentrate by entrainment. Lumwana Operations sought the use of the Jameson Cell technology after observing successful implementation at other sites in rectifying similar issues. In late 2009, Jameson Cell pilot-plant test work was conducted at the site and this quickly led to the installation of a full-scale B5400/18 model into the existing cleaner circuit. Inclusion of the Jameson Cell resulted in the plant being able to effectively produce clean and saleable concentrate with Uranium contents consistently below acceptable levels. Initially designed to be used as a cleaner scalper cell at the head of the existing conventional cell circuit, subsequent operational issues with the existing recleaner cells forced reconfiguration of the cleaner circuit and reintroduced the Jameson Cell for the recleaning duty. This paper reports the Lumwana Operation from the first two years of operation where it struggled to produce a saleable concentrate with Uranium grades below 150 ppm, which is the maximum allowable limit set out in the smelting contracts, to steps taken in the subsequent years to implement a satisfactory solution. The plant can now consistently produce a clean Copper concentrate with Uranium grades well below 130 ppm and the overall improvements implemented at site have seen the overall plant recovery improve by 1.3%.

The Barrick Zaldivar mine is an openpit, heap-leach copper mine in Region II of northern Chile at an elevation of 3,300 m (10,826 ft), approximately 1,400 km (870 miles) north of Santiago and 175 km (109 miles) southeast of the port city of Antofagasta. In 2006, Zaldívar produced 307 million lbs of copper, with reserves estimated at 5.7 billion lbs. The mine uses conventional methods of openpit mining: Pure cathode copper is produced by three stages of crushing and stacking the ore, followed by heap leaching and bacterial activity to extract copper from the ore into solution. A solvent extraction and electrowinning process then removes the copper from solution and produces the cathode copper. A flotation plant also recovers copper contained in the fine fraction of the crushed ore. In 2006, an existing A-frame structure that covered copper ore from the mine?s secondary crushing operation was damaged beyond repair. The material delivery configuration of this original structure had the conveyor carrying incoming ore directly over the low roof to drop ore into the building at its peak, and ore trickling from the sides of the conveyor had accumulated on the roof, overloading it. A better solution had to be found, and fast: First, the Chilean Commission does not permit uncovered piles of this type since the extremely fine material leads to serious pollution problems. Second, Barrick Zaldivar is very concerned about worker safety, and the amount of dust created by the uncovered pile was not acceptable. Neste trabalho é apresentada a influência de diferentes processos de tratamentos térmicos sobre as microestruturas e propriedades mecânicas resultantes em tubos de um aço sem costura do tipo API 5L. Após tratamentos térmicos, o material foi estudado em três condições diferentes: apenas laminado, normalizado e temperado e revenido, objetivando obter os graus X42R, X42N e X70Q, respectivamente. Ensaios de tração, dureza e impacto foram utilizados para caracterizar o comportamento mecânico dos diferentes graus do aço. Técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura foram utilizadas para caracterizar as microestruturas resultantes dos tratamentos térmicos e as fractografias dos corpos de prova de tração e impacto. Os resultados mostram que tubos de aço sem costura do tipo API 5L não precisam ser de graus tão elevados quanto os tubos soldados, pois graus intermediários relativos aos tubos sem costura possuem propriedades mecânicas similares aos elevados graus de aço relativos aos tubos soldados, o que evidencia a vantagem da rota de fabricação de tubos sem costura.

Tendon support systems have been successfully used to stabilize excavations. Tendon support systems are routinely designed using the axial load-bearing capacity of tendons, namely the tensile strength. To attain tensile strength the tendon must be loaded along its length, which often does not occur in practice. Tendons should optimally be installed at 90° to the surface of the excavation to achieve maximum penetration depth, yet this is often not physically or practically possible, and installations at angles less than 90° occur. Furthermore, the intersection of geological features within the rock mass frequently results in complex loading situations on tendons. The position and angle at which loading occurs results in different combinations of tensile and shear forces acting on the tendon, which can impact on the support performance of each unit and ultimately the whole system. All factors that influence the support system should be understood and taken into account to ensure a sound support design. Combination loading situations are further investigated and tested to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved and the effects on tendon load-bearing capacity. Tendon support units were tested at different installation angles to establish the tendon performance, mechanical behaviour, and load capacity during these loading situations. The results and outcomes are aimed at providing rock engineers with additional data and improved understanding of how tendons could perform under certain conditions.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is 57 km (35 miles) long and consists of two par-allel single-track tubes with an ex-cavation diameter ranging from 8.8 to 9.5 m (28.8 to 31.2 ft). These are interlinked by cross-passages every 312 m (1,000 ft). Two multifunction stations (MFS) are located in the sections Sedrun and Faido, at one-third and two-thirds of the entire tunnel length (Fig. 1). These will be used for the diversion of trains to the other main tube via tunnel crossovers, for the housing of tech-nical infrastructure and equipment and for potential emergency stops. To reduce construction time, the GBT was divided into five sections and was excavated from several sites simultaneously. The tunnel was excavated from the two portals, Erstfeld in the north and Bodio in the south, and also from three intermediate attacks, with their corresponding access tunnels, in Amsteg and Faido and two vertical 800-m (2,624-ft) deep shafts in Sedrun.

Four companies mined ball clay in four states during 2005. They included H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys), Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.32 Mt (1.45 million st) valued at $53.3 million, based on the results of a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. Production in 2004 was 1.22 Mt (1.34 million st) valued at $54.1 million. Tennessee was the leading ball clay producer state with 61 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky.
