Acid mine drainage (AMD) is difficult to treat due to its physicochemical characteristics, such as high pH and high heavy metal concentrations, so it causes great harm to the environment and human health. If acid mine drainage is discharged arbitrarily without treatment, it will lead to a series of environmental problems and cause long-term environmental pollution. In this paper, the source and hazards of acid mine drainage are introduced in detail. And the principle, the mechanism, the application, and basic information of the current primary technology of the treatment for acid mine drainage are comprehensively introduced and summarized. The summarized treatment technologies for acid mine drainage mainly include neutralization, sulfidization, constructed wetland method, adsorption method, microbiological method, ion exchange method, membrane technology, and microbial fuel cell technology. Also, the primary technology of treatment for acid mine drainage is systematically compared and evaluated. Moreover, some suggestions on the development direction of water treatment technology in the future are put forward. This paper provides a scientific reference for scientific and technical works to treat acid mine drainage.

Ground support performance is critical to the safe and economical extraction of ore. This is particularly important for mass mining extractions at great depth, which are currently being considered by a large number of mining companies worldwide. As the in situ stresses concentrate around critical excavations, failure occurs at the excavation boundaries and ground support is required for the excavations to remain safe and accessible for their intended lifespan. Ground support consists of reinforcing elements that are installed within the rock mass to modify its internal behaviour (generally to within one excavation radius) and surface support elements that are installed at the exposed boundaries to retain the failed pieces of rock. For surface support to be effective, the loadings need to be transferred to the reinforcing elements; however, the combined performance of rock bolts and mesh is poorly understood in terms of the energy dissipation capacity available for a typical ground support scheme implemented at most mass mining operations.Over the last 15 years or so, a large number of large-scale laboratory experiments have been completed at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) Dynamic Test Facility for reinforcement systems and surface support systems loaded separately. The objective of more recent testing has been to establish the combined energy dissipation capacity of typical and enhanced reinforcement systems combined with mesh surface support. Total energy dissipation has been separated into energy dissipation attributable to the reinforcement and to the mesh. Bulk density and grade were determined on a variety of ore samples from the Mount Tom Price iron ore mine and the interrelationship between these properties and porosity deduced.Variable porosity is responsible for the wide scatter of data points and low accuracy of prediction in the grade of a single sample from grade/bulk density relationships.However, with a sufficient number of such data points, as from a nuclear geophysical borehole logging operation, the mean ore grade in an exploration-type drill hole (~63 per cent Fe) could be determined by regressionanal~sis with 95 per cent confidence intervals of approximately ± 1 per cent Fe. From the same logging operation, utilizing core data for calibration of the probe, the -mean fractional porosity for the drill hole (0·19 ± 0·016 at 95 per cent confidence interval) was deduced. This is less accurate than the corresponding result obtained on core material in the laboratory (0·20 ± 0·005).The range of porosity was from 0·08 for dense, high grade sectIOns of the ore, to 0·28 for friable ore of high grade or goethitic ore of lower grade. Shale band porosity ranged from 0·15 to anomalously high values of 0·48 believed to be caused by leaching of iron minerals from the shale. Porosity values for the iron ore component of the deposit are comparable to those found for the Cockatoo Island (W.A.) mine, and for sections of the Krivoy Rog (Ukraine) iron ore deposit of the Soviet Union.

The Toulon tunnel project is a key component of the Highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960?s. The tunnel project is made of 2 separate tunnels: South and North tunnel. The North tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction (for example, on March 15th, 1996, a collapse of the tunnel in the ?Marchand Area? generated a sink hole in the city Center, causing 20 months delay). The South tunnel alignment runs parallel to the North tunnel at the same depth below Toulon historical downtown (20 to 40m depth with some areas with less than 10m of cover). The Risk management program was studied to be a State of the Art program in urban tunneling construction. The Hydro Geological Context The whole project area is covered with backfills and colluviums of 1 to 4m thick. The Schist, marls and sandstones, randomly distributed along the alignment below the first layer have different characteristics. While the Schist are pretty compact, the marls are fractured. The other layers have very different characteristics, and many faults are located along the alignment, especially in the limestones. The Breccia are heavily decompressed and deformable, as well as the other soils located in the Marchand Area. This 80m long area is where the settlements need to be controlled with an extensive monitoring program. The complete Geological profile is presented in Figure 1. [ ]

O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em estudar o perfil térmico da carcaça metálica inferior do Forno Elétrico a Arco (FEA) durante o processo de produção de aço, sugerindo adição de aletas na geometria a fim de obter maior troca de calor e diminuição na temperatura de trabalho da carcaça metálica inferior do FEA. Assim, analisou-se a influência do ciclo térmico do processo por meio de acompanhamento termográfico e simulações computacionais via Método de Elementos Finitos. Posto isto, as modificações propostas, depois de testadas e analisadas por meio de um acompanhamento termográfico, denotaram eficiência de tal maneira que resultou em uma diminuição de aproximadamente 60ºC da temperatura na carcaça metálica inferior do FEA.

From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. The Cessna was modified structurally to take the magnetometer, associated bird, and winch gear.The proton-precession magnetometer has many good features.1. Documented case histories of surface ground movements from mine subsidence were utilized to help determine when the initial collapse of the overburden occurred above longwall panels. By studying this relationship between initial movement at the surface and the amount of face advance, the least-complex conditions exist for empirically assessing the span capacity of the overburden. The objective of this work was to obtain a better understanding of the overburden response to longwall mining. This knowledge will give a better insight on the long-term effects that different overburden types have on the stability and the subsidence potential of room and pillar mines, as well as, the influence of the overburden on subsidence over longwall panels. Theory on the overburden span capacity was developed and correlated to field observations. Data were used on the overburden lithology, depth, width, and face advance of the panel, and the subsidence conditions that were noted on the surface. The subsidence measured on the surface was used to determine when complete failure in the overburden rock had occurred. According to spans predicted by theory and the subsidence measured in the field, the competent lower units failed at a face advance less than when significant subsidence was observed on the surface. In each case studied, there were competent lower beds; however, the full overburden weight was not sustained to the point of subsidence. The best correlation with the surface movement was found with the most shallow, competent bed. Elastic plate solutions with various support conditions were found to best monitor the surface subsidence of these upper roof units.

Because of drilling, completion, and workover practices, the permeability around a wellbore generally is different from the permeability of the formation. The zone with the altered permeability is called "skin" and its effect on the pressure or flow behavior of the well is called "skin effect". Hawkinsl has shown that the radius and the permeability of this zone are related to the skin by: If the permeability in the skin zone is less than that of the formation, the skin is positive; if it is more than that of the formation, the skin is negative. If the two permeabilities are equal, s is zero; that is, there is no skin. Van Everdingen2 and Hurst3 have given mathematical solutions to the case of a zone of reduced permeability around the wellbore. This skin effect is illustrated in Fig. 1. They treat the positive skin as a zone of reduced permeability of infinitesimal thickness around the wellbore. When applied to a well with negative skin, however, their solutions lead to the calculated flowing well pressure which is smaller than the formation pressure, i.e., an injection situation. This is a physical contradiction. In this paper, it is shown that this mathematical difficulty can be overcome by assuming an effective wellbore radius larger than the actual wellbore. Existing solutions2"4 are modified to include the effect of an enlarged wellbore radius, and thus enable the engineer to deal with negative as well as positive skins. No processo de laminação a quente um dos fatores que afetam sua produtividade são os arrebentamentos de tira que ocorre no trem acabador, provocando paradas de longa duração, desvios de material e exposição do homem ao risco de acidentes. Dentro das causas responsáveis pelo arrebentamento de tira está o lascamento de cilindros de trabalho que é causado por trinca geradas na superfície do cilindro durante o processo de laminação. O objetivo deste trabalho é identificar as possíveis causas dos lascamentos de cilindros de trabalho, propondo ações para reduzir as ocorrências utilizando o método solução de problemas. Após análise dos dados foi identificado que as ocorrências de falhas superficiais tinham forte correlação com as tensões de contato entre os cilindros de trabalho e o cilindro de encosto, foi realizado então um estudo com objetivo de verificar se as tensões de contato entre os dois cilindros poderiam estar relacionadas com os lascamentos. O método do estudo consistiu em simular diferentes perfis no cilindro de encosto (cilindro flat e com coroamento positivo) e diferentes caimentos (comprimento e altura) para obter os menores carregamentos possível. A condição de perfil e caimento com o menor carregamento foi testada no laminador para verificar na prática se houve a redução dos lascamentos. Os perfis e os caimentos testado permitiram uma redução significativa de ocorrência de lascamento de cilindros. A metodologia empregada para analise mostrou-se eficaz, podendo ser aplicada em outros laminadores para identificação de causas de falhas.

The Fort Knox Mine is located in Alaska’s interior where the average ambient air temperatures range from -24°C in January to 16°C in July. The mill processes a free milling gold ore utilizing both a gravity recovery circuit and conventional cyanide leach/carbon-in-pulp circuits. Plant slurry temperature cycles seasonally and allows for a unique opportunity to measure the impact temperature has on gold leach kinetics, carbon adsorption efficiency and cyanide destruction reactions. Mathematical models have been developed to accurately predict actual mill performance. This paper describes the development of the models and presents data that allow for a better understanding of the impact of circuit operating temperature on process efficiencies.

This Bureau of Mines report is concerned with the testing procedures for evaluating clays, shales, and slates for lightweight aggregates using the rotary-kiln method of production. To meet the increasing demand for light-weight concrete, rapid, accurate methods for appraising raw materials for light-weight aggregate are needed. Preliminary tests were made on samples of clay, shale, and slate, using laboratory equipment, and the data were used to establish operating conditions for pilot-plant-size rotary-kiln tests. Lightweight concrete was made from the processed aggregates and the properties determined. The results show that the laboratory data can be used to guide rotary-kiln testing, and, with the exception of sampling, a complete appraisal of a raw material for lightweight aggregate concrete can be made in 3 days by the methods described in this report.

Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

Em determinadas rotas de manufatura de componentes automotivos, principalmente de produtos do segmento rodoviário pesado, são muito comuns processos de desempeno a quente, assim como outros procedimentos como arqueamento e alinhamento de longarinas. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo traçar os principais impactos destes processos sobre o material de alta resistência e baixa liga norma DIN EN 10149 S700MC em uma rota de fabricação de produtos automotivos com interferência de um procedimento a quente. Esse material, quando submetido ao ciclo térmico para alinhamento a quente, através do aquecimento de algumas regiões pontuais e do posterior resfriamento ao ar calmo têm suas propriedades mecânicas alteradas. Para comprovar isso, foram reproduzidas as condições do processo atual para mapeamento de dados de temperatura para os subsequentes ensaios de laboratório. Comparando as amostras submetidas ao ciclo térmico, com as produzidas com a mesma matéria prima sem aquecimento, pode-se verificar o impacto causado pelo processo de alinhamento a quente utilizado sobre as propriedades mecânicas do material. Os resultados mostram que o aço DIN EN 10149 S700MC apresenta alterações expressivas em todos os ciclos realizados. Com isso, ocorrem modificações na microestrutura pelo ciclo térmico ocasionando a diminuição de algumas propriedades mecânicas importantes, como tensão de escoamento, dureza e a tensão limite de fadiga.

New control techniques were added in subsequent years.An on-stream X-ray analyser was installed in 1968. It provided circuit analyses for six years without the aid of a computer. In late 1974, control of the flotation circuit by computer was incorporated into the system. Flotation efficiency improved considerably, zinc"" recovery increased by one percentage point and concentrate grade by four-tenths of a percentage point. Reagent costs decreased modestly through reduction of copper sulphate consumption."

In 1972, the Bureau of Mines of the U. S. Department of the Interior commissioned the development and design of a Simulator for research and testing of mine roof supports used in long-wall mining. The purpose of the Simulator is to reproduce forces and displacements of a section of a mine roof in contact with one or more supports. This report is an account of the design process that resulted in the final configuration of the Simulator presented here. It includes discussions of engineering considerations that led to major changes in important details of the Simulator. These changes, however, did not substantially alter the basic design originally proposed, except for the elimination of certain originally-specified features that were adjudged as insufficiently cost-effective by both the Bureau of Mines and the design agent at an intermediate stage of the design.

National Grid needs to maintain a connection between two existing electricity sub-stations (Beddington & Rowdown) in the Croydon (south London) area, and allow the replacement of two 275 kV cable circuits that are buried under roads. This is to be achieved using a single 400 kV cable circuit within a 10 km (6.25 mile) long, 3 m (9.8 ft) diameter high voltage cable tunnel which is being driven through water bearing Chalk, at depths ranging from 5 m (15 ft) to 80 m (262 ft), with four access shafts(12.5 m (41 ft) in diameter) ranging in depth from 10 m (31 ft) to 40 m (131 ft). The Chalk in this area acts as a source of public drinking water supply (PWS) and is protected by areas designated Groundwater Source Protection Zones. To minimise the groundwater risk the design and construction of the cable tunnel and shafts has paid particular attention to the construction materials used, including testing of these construction materials prior to use, developing construction methods (including the design of the Earth Pressure Balance TBM) and maintaining a groundwater monitoring & testing programme prior to and during construction to ensure the integrity of the Chalk aquifer is maintained as a drinking water source. This paper describes the tunnel &shaft design and construction in relation to these particular groundwater environmental issues which set new precedents for tunnel assessment, design and construction requirements in the United Kingdom.

The two contracts of the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor(BWARI) sewer project for the City of Columbus, Ohio total nearly 35,000 feet of 14and 12-foot diameter tunnel. EPB TBMs will install precast concrete segmental lining through difficult glacial soils ranging from clean granular to hard till with high groundwater and boulders, crossing roads, railroads, and a large stream. Construction of 12 shafts and a large Interconnect Structure involving major ground stabilization work is required. The paper will review design of major project elements and present an update on construction progress.

Silicon-Silicon Carbide (Si-SiC) composites were synthesized by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) from a powder mixture of SiO2-C-Mg. The reaction was carried out in a SHS reactor under static argon gas at a pressure of 0.5 MPa. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The effects of silica sources and carbon mole ratio in precursor mixture on the Si-SiC conversion were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope technique. The as-synthesized products of Si-SiC-MgO powders were leached with 0.1M HCl acid solution to obtain the Si-SiC composite powders.

"The Cortez SAG mill liner design was recently modified to improve the mill operating energy efficiency. In addition to the expected benefits, the design change unexpectedly played a significant role of verifying the proposed grinding circuit expansion for the Cortez Hills project as well as illustrating current SAG mill bottlenecks. This paper will discuss the evaluation that addressed operator and maintenance observations, historical PLC data, and “crash stop” observations to calculate charge motion, packing between lifters, and slurry transport through grate and pulp lifters. The performance of the new shell and discharge end liner design will also be discussed as well as their role in the possible grinding circuit expansion.INTRODUCTIONCortez Gold Mines commenced operation in 1969 with its Mill #1 rated at a nominal 2,000 tons per day. Mill #1 was a conventional rod mill/ball mill circuit followed by an 8-stage CIP circuit. In the early 1990s the Pipeline deposit was discovered and subsequently Mill #2 was built to process the increased ore volume. Mill #2, commissioned by mid-1997, was a nominal 10,000 tons per day SABC circuit followed by an 8-stage CIL circuit for oxide gold ore. Operating and commissioning details of this plant have been published elsewhere (Powell, 1998). By late 1998, there was not enough ore volume to support both mills so the smaller, higher operating cost Mill #1 was put under its current care-and-maintenance status. A simplified flowsheet of the current mill is shown in Figure 1."

Dado que la voladura es una de las operaciones unitarias de mayor extracción del mineral -en tanto logra una adecuada fragmentación de la roca con un costo reducido, es necesario lograr una interrelación entre los resultados de la voladura y el de las operaciones unitarias como herramientas que evalúan y optimizan los diseños de los disparos. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe las técnicas para el diseño de las mallas de perforación, los programas para la simulación de la voladura y también para medir los resultados, que permitirán realizar los ajustes necesarios para mejorar los resultados de fragmentación y reducir el costo de operación de minado.
