A fim de recuperar-se todos os materiais presentes em painéis fotovoltaicos, o emprego de solventes orgânicos para promover a dissolução da fração polimérica e liberação dos componentes é uma alternativa ao tratamento térmico tradicional. Com o objetivo de verificar-se o impacto dessa etapa na recuperação de prata, o metal de maior valor presente nos painéis de silício cristalino, comparou-se taxas de recuperação de prata para rotas distintas de separação de materiais e cominuição: uma rota por dissolução do encapsulante através de solventes e uma rota por tratamento térmico e destruição do encapsulante. Utilizando-se o isopropanol como solvente, ainda foi analisada a contribuição da cominuição para a liberação da prata. Os ensaios de lixiviação foram realizados com soluções de 5M HNO3, analisando-se as concentrações de prata por ICP-MS. O processo de calcinação foi realizado em forno a 480°C, a dissolução do encapsulante realizada com isopropanol e a cominuição realizada em moinho de facas. Foi concluído que a separação com isopropanol não afetou a quantidade de prata lixiviada na etapa de recuperação de metais. Além disso identificou-se que a cominuição não seria necessária sob as condições de lixiviação utilizadas, já que poderia potencialmente contribuir para perda de prata no processo.

This circular is part II of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of employees. It deals with the physiological aspects of the principal physical qualities of mine air; part I (Information Circular 7001), chapters 1 to 3, discussed the physiological aspects of the chemical qualities of mine air, especially when contaminated with organic matter and noxious and toxic gases; part III will describe theoretical and practical methods of air-conditioning mines to try to correct or alleviate the conditions mentioned and will discuss the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various parts of tae world. With the present emphasis on the necessity for preserving the health of the Nation's defenders, industrial as well as military, attention should be called to the various conditions that may affect adversely their health and efficiency. One of the most important of these is exposure to abnormal air conditions, especially high temperatures and humidities. Therefore, it is believed that although the data presented here on the physiological effects of exposure to high temperatures cue intended mainly for the mining and allied industries, they are applicable to many other defense industries as well as to conditions present in some activities of the Army and Navy.

Montana Tech is located in the historic mining town of Butte, MT and is adjacent to the Orphan Boy mine. This abandoned underground mine will be the heat source for a down-hole heat exchanger (DHE)/heat pump system. The mine was abandoned in the 1950?s and has since filled with water to within approximately 30 m of the surface. The shaft is composed of a 245 m vertical shaft connected with horizontal crosscut drifts at 60 m and 150 m below the water level that connect to a large stope with approximately 1250 million liters of water at a consistent 75-78°F temperature. The intent is to build this heating system to augment or fully heat a newly built 2,000 m2 building on the Montana Tech campus. As designed the system uses ?off-the-shelf? parts making the basic configuration straightforward with the exception of the DHE?s which need to be placed into the vertical shaft. Because there is little or no examples of placing the heat exchangers in a vertical shaft, the primary focus of this work was to model the heat exchanger placement and configuration in the vertical shaft such that thermal currents develop between the stope and vertical shaft in, via the horizontal crosscut drifts, in order to move the water and thereby provide the required energy. This study includes the modeling of water flow, temperature profiles, and the heat contribution from the surrounding rock walls.

Unfortunately, I don't know the unit cost per cubic yard of treatment. I reflected on that yesterday and I don't think that we considered the use of micropiles. They could have been an option. The challenge may have been picking up some of the lateral load but I think the micropiles could have been installed on a batter and perhaps extended to rock. We could have considered them, but I do not believe we explored micropiles as an option for this project.

Neste trabalho é apresentado uma metodologia para caracterização de propriedades ópticas e espessura de óleo depositado em folha-de-flandres por elipsometria. Folhas-de-flandres precisam receber ao final do seu processo de produção um fino filme de óleo para proteger a folha contra abrasão e facilitar o desempilhamento quando é armazenada em fardos. Para medida da espessura desta camada de óleo foi desenvolvido um procedimento eficaz com o uso de um Elipsômetro Espectrométrico (ou Espectral) de Polarizador Rotativo. Foram comparados os resultados com estudos feitos pelo método da balança de hidrofil, técnica utilizada atualmente, mostrando um aumento na sensibilidade da medida.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Northwest Barricade LLC (NWB) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel fire blocking gel for use in underground coal mines to extinguish or to retard the growth of a coal fire. The gel agent was subjected to controlled laboratory testing to assess its ability to delay coal ignition. It was then evaluated to determine if manual fire hose application could be used to apply the agent to mine roofs and ribs to provide a safe egress for mine rescue teams from a fire area. The gel agent was also evaluated in a water sprinkler system to determine its potential for use in conveyor belt fire suppression systems. The agent was then tested in live-fire exercises to examine its effectiveness in retarding and extinguishing a deep-seated coal fire and wood fire. Lastly, the ability of a Mine Rescue Team to quickly and safely apply the gel agent to a mine entry during a simulated mine fire exercise was determined.

The strength measured by the uniaxial compression test is a parameter that is widely used for the engineering classification of rocks. Sedimentary rocks such as shales, however, are difficult to evaluate by uniaxial compression tatting because the rocks slake during the preparation of the standard samples required for the tests. Indirect methods such as the point load test have been proposed to determine the unconfined compressive strength of shales and other soft rocks. It is current practice to use 24 as the conversion factor between the point load strength, Is, and the unconfined compressive strength, sf (sf = 24 Is). The present study investigated index-to-strength conversion factors for shales and sandstones obtained from surface coal mining sites in the Appalachian region. Regression analyses indicate that a conversion factor of 12.5 best correlated the strengths obtained from the point load and unconfined compression tarts in the case of shales. For the sandstones, a value of 17.4 best correlated the strengths.

This report reviews the current state of the art of remote control techniques for underground continuous miners. A delineation of aspects requiring additional data is presented. Also a summary and delineation are presented in overview form for the related section functions: roof control, haulage, ventilation, power supply and rock dusting. The automated remotely controlled continuous miner project is a long-range research effort. However, the program has been divided into intermediate steps resulting in incremental production increases throughout the program. Data are developed relating the impact of our proposed research and development accomplishments to potential productivity impact.

The principle of personal safety is as old as the human race. The application of this principle to industry is of much more recent origin, and may be said to be almost exclusively the product of the twentieth century. The enormous strides in technique and production mode prior to the turn of the century had been achieved without any real regard for the crippled human by-products of that expansive era. It was accepted that. accidents were inevitable and formed part of the price that must be paid for production. It was not until 1885 that the first Workmen's Compensation Act was passed in Germany making the employer financially liable for injuries suffered on his plant.With awakening social conscience came the first organised efforts to reduce accidents in industry. Early 19th century literature dealing with the development of powerdriven machinery and the growth of industry in Europe contains many references to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that accompanied the change-over from the home workshop to the industrial plant. By the year 1900, there were in Germany - and a little later in England governmental regulations dealing with the guarding of hazardous machinery. American industry, now the acknowledged leader in industrial safety, admits freely that when an organised safety movement commenced in that country, there was already a considerable amount of information available to them from European experience. The mechanical properties of coal are often represented by the orthotropicmaterial model, which consists of nine elastic constants. The material symmetries involved are found in coal primarily because of the natural process by which it was formed. In this thesis the material properties of five U.S. coals, as obtained from cubical testing, are examined, using as a basis for comparison the assumption of the orthotropic material model. An analysis is performed on each set of coal material data in order to examine its conformability to other, less complex material models, these being the transversely isotropic model consisting of five elastic constants and the 'isotropic model consisting of two elastic constants. In addition, the material properties of two American shales are analyzed, based on the assumption that they comply with the transversely isotropic model. An analysis similar to that performed on the coal material is applied to the shale in order to determine the conformity of its material properties to the isotropic model.

Final mine sealing of BMA’s Crinum North mine, near Emerald, Queensland was undertaken in December 2015. Due to the benign atmospheric environment at Crinum North, the Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) Górniczy Agregat Gasniczy (GAG) unit was utilised to reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground atmosphere as part of the final sealing process.The GAG was utilised by way of a vertical borehole from the surface to seam to successfully reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground mine workings. Application of the GAG unit enabled the underground mine to be classified as stable and inert within days of the GAG operation, and subsequently cease gas monitoring at Crinum North. The data and information obtained from this activity provides valuable information to the underground coal mining industry on successful application of the GAG in realistic situations.This paper discusses the strategy used for sealing, the assisted inertisation and the results obtained from the application of the GAG unit. It discusses both the overall results and gives a detailed review of the gas monitoring data obtained via the tube bundle and real-time system, both during and following the use of the GAG unit.Gas monitoring results obtained and the strategy used are critical to share with the industry to obtain a better understanding of how the GAG unit works, and how it can be applied for emergency preparedness, emergency response or planned inertisation.CITATION:Westthorp, E, 2017. "Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) used as catalyst which reduces toxic substances in emission gas exhausted from an automobile should extensively be recycled because they are rare metals produced only at the limited regions. The recycling process is to smelt an alumina honeycomb, in which PGM is built, in molten iron with flux such as lime and silica to separate them. PGMs are concentrated in molten iron while alumina in slag.The objective of this study is to understand the factor to concentrate PGMs in liquid iron as much as possible. Fundamental research of the distribution of the PGMs between the slag and liquid iron was carried out to recover the value metals of platinum, palladium and rhodium from the three-way auto catalyst. The distribution ratios of platinum, palladium and rhodium between the Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron are from 10-6 to 10-5, and these are concentrated in comparison with slag phase by about 1 million times to the liquid iron at 1873 K. The distribution ratios of platinum between the FexO-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron decrease from 0.1 to 2?10-4 with increasing the CaO content in the slag. The CaO addition to the FexO unary slag is effective in concentrating platinum in molten iron.Based on the distribution ratios obtained in this work, recovery of PGMs was determined. The recovery of platinum, palladium and rhodium increase with increasing the mass ratio, Mmetal/Mslag. In the case of the conditions of Mmetal/Mslag = 0.04, the recoveries of PGMs showed more than 99.97%. The use of liquid iron and carbon saturated liquid iron as the collector metal is advantageous for the PGM recycling of the three-way auto catalyst. We found that PGMs are enriched to the molten iron or the carbon saturated iron and the slag loss of PGMs is negligible small."

"Heath Steele Mines is a base metal producer situated near Newcastle, N.B. presently treating 3500 TPD of complex Cu-Pb-Zn ore. The ore consists of massive fine grained sulfides averaging I. 1% Cu, 1.6% Pb and 4.5% Zn.The original mill started in 1956 at 750 TPD and was successively expanded through 1500 to 3000 TPD in 1969. In 1972 an expansion to 4000 TPD was initiated. It was planned to obtain the maximum benefit from equipment and manpower by adding some process equipment, instrumentation, an on stream analyser, and a process control system. The benefits from this approach could be greater than normally expected, because of the complex metallurgy of this ore.IntroductionThe crushing plant is of conventional design with two 5 ½ ft, Symons cone crushers with the crushed ore screened to -7/8 inch on a 61 x 16 1 Al I is Chalmers vibrating screen and stored in four 1000 Ion bins. There are two para I lei grinding circuits, each one consisting of the following: one Rod Mill in open circuit, one Ball Mill in closed circuit with two 20"" Krebs cyclones, and one Ball Mill in closed circuit with three 15"" Krebs cyclones, Al I the Mills are 9' x 121 Al I is Chalmers Mills. The secondary cyclone overflow from each grinding circuit is thickened and combined to form flotation feed. The final product is 65% - 400 Mesh. Two regrind mills have been installed as part of the expansion."

"The StackCell was developed to overcome the engineering and design challenges that are commonly associated with existing flotation technology such as pneumatic, self-aspirating cells, mechanical cells, and flotation columns. These challenges include high energy consumption, large floorspace requirements, and size. They are most evident when designing systems to process streams containing a high volumetric flow rate coupled with a significant float yield. Unlike many metalliferous and industrial mineral applications, fine coal flotation circuits are typically characterized by feed streams containing a low solids content (<5%, by weight) where up to 85% of the feed can report to the product launder. With input from major engineering houses and end-users, the Eriez Flotation Division (EFD) developed the StackCell technology with the goal of providing an additional flotation option for end-users. This technology was designed specifically to overcome these challenges by providing an efficient method of separation in terms of metallurgy, but also with respect to equipment size, energy consumption, and installed costs. Besides being placed in tandem with existing cells to provide cost-effective supplemental capacity, this technology can be installed in a stand-alone arrangement as recently demonstrated at Patriot Coal’s Kanawha Eagle preparation plant. This manuscript provides an understanding of the underlying fundamentals of this new technology and presents data from Kanawha Eagle in addition to other industrialscale installations.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, column flotation has continued to gain acceptance as an alternative method for recovering fine coal due to superior metallurgical performance as compared to mechanical flotation cells. This point has been proven on numerous occasions by comparison of plant flotation data with the release analysis separation curve (Dell et al., 1972). Data from a release analysis test approximates the ultimate flotation response of a coal sample. In North America, a number of investigations have been published that document bottom-line improvements achieved using column cells (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004; Baumgarth et al., 2005). According to these reports, the benefits are derived from an overall increase in plant yield that can be achieved due to the improved product grade in the flotation circuit. In particular, the application of wash water to a deep froth utilized in column flotation minimizes the nonselective recovery of high-ash ultrafines that are hydraulically entrained in the froth by conventional flotation machines."

Este trabalho tem por objetivo investigar o efeito do Y na precipitação da fase δ na superliga de níquel 718 e correlacionar a caracterização microestrutural com a precipitação/dissolução das fases, por análise térmica. As ligas A, B e C solubilizadas e superenvelhecidas foram caracterizadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e de transmissão, com o auxílio de EDS para identificar as fases presentes nas ligas. A caracterização microestrutural foi corroborada com técnica de calorimetria diferencial de varredura. Resultados mostraram que a adição de Y influencia no tamanho de grão e consequentemente na fração de δ precipitada. A adição de Y modificou a cinética de precipitação de δ, que variou de acordo com o teor de ítrio adicionado.

A two year study into the effects of coal mining induced subsidence on cliff lines was undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources with the support of a grant under the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Program. A new monitoring technique, using an Electronic Distance Meter and acrylic reflectors attached to the cliffs, provided safety for the surveyors and extensive and accurate three dimensional displacement data on the movement of the cliffs as they were being undermined. The study report included many graphs showing the measured vertical and horizontal displacements, differential subsidence, tilts and strains and included analysis of these movements with various parameters, such as, seam thickness, depth of cover and distances between the reflectors, longwall face and the edge of the chain pillar. Some of these graphs are presented in this paper and could be used, with caution, to predict subsidence movements around other cliff lines, after allowing for differences in geology and mining layout. A mechanism is suggested as an explanation for the observed high horizontal movements around the cliff lines. Sixteen percent of the overall lengths of cliffs that were undermined during the monitoring study fell and the contributions of various factors that appeared to influence the cliff falls are discussed. It is concluded that no single factor dominated as the major cause of the cliff falls and, often, many factors combined to cause cliff face instability.

Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito da variação da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico na eletrodeposição da liga Ni-Mo-P utilizando citrato de sódio como agente complexante em função do comportamento anticorrosivo da mesma, da composição química e morfologia dos revestimentos. A caracterização das camadas foi feita por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDX). Os ensaios de corrosão foram realizados à temperatura ambiente em NaCl 0,1 M por polarização potenciodiâmica linear (PPL). Como ferramenta de otimização foi utilizado um planejamento fatorial completo 23 associado a metodologia da superfície de resposta (MSR). As propriedades de corrosão e composição química dos revestimentos de Ni-Mo-P obtidos mostraram ser dependentes da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico. A ausência de trincas foi verificada para revesimentos com baixo conteúdo de molibdênio e mostrou ser necessário para obtenção de eletrodepósitos com boas propriedades de resistência à corrosão. Os resultados revelaram que o revestimento que apresentou melhor resistência à corrosão foi obtido em densidade de corrente 100 mA cm-2, temperatura de 40°C e pH 9,0 com composição de 87 wt.% Ni, 6 wt.% Mo e 7 wt.% P e sua superfice exibiu morfologia nodular.

A remoção de inclusões nos distribuidores de lingotamento contínuo tem sido investigada por meio de modelamentos físicos e matemáticos. Recentemente, a injeção de gás nos distribuidores tem sido considerada como uma alternativa para aprimorar a remoção de inclusões. Vários trabalhos vêm sendo desenvolvidos analisando os efeitos da injeção de gás e sua interação com as inclusões. No entanto, existe espaço para mais investigações envolvendo o efeito da vazão do gás e a localização do sistema de injeção de gás na eficiência de remoção de inclusões. No presente trabalho, foi usado um modelo físico construído em escala 1:3 de um distribuidor industrial de 40 toneladas de capacidade nominal, para analisar o efeito da injeção de gás. Os experimentos incluíram contagem on-line de partículas pela sonda APS III e análise de curvas DTR. O resultado mostrou que a injeção de gás é benéfica à remoção de inclusões e que a análise pura dos volumes característicos, calculados a partir das curvas DTR, não é suficiente para avaliar a eficiência de remoção.
