"An apparatus and procedure developed in the laboratory of the South-west Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines are capable not only of determining the rate and volume of penetration of solutions into porous materials but also of determining the total volume of voids within particles of porous material, and the density. The method is applicable to ores, bricks, concretes, tiles, filter bottoms, or other porous materials of this nature. As will be made clear in the descriptive matter to follow, the method measures (a) the volume of voids within the porous materials and is not concerned with the interstitial space between the particles.Porous materials usually contain some large voids and also pores that are capillary in nature. To measure the total volume of voids in a sample it is necessary to replace the gas or gases within the voids with some liquid of known density. The large cavities can be filled quite readily, but under ordinary conditions a long time may be required to fill capillary pores. As many porous materials are of a decomposable nature it is necessary to evacuate the porous materials and then submerge them in a liquid of known density to bring about saturation in a short time. Then by the use of a hydrostatic balance the volume of porous material (solid itself) can be determined. To determine the volume of porous material plus voids it is necessary to coat the sample with some material, such s paraffin, which will prevent solution from entering the voids; then, by means of a hydrostatic balance, the volume of porous material plus voids is determined and by subtracting that of the porous material from this the volume of voids is ascertained. The rate of penetration of solutions can be determined either (a) by measuring the change in weight as the sample becomes saturated when immersed ni a liquid of know density, or (b) by measuring the volume of liquid penetrating with a dilatometer. In either instance, due to the fact that some penetration takes place as soon as the sample comes in contact with solution and before a reading can be taken, the sample must be paraffined to determine the total volume of penetration. Since many porous materials partly decompose and disintegrate in liquids the rate and volume of penetration can better be measured by dilatometer than by the change in weight, as saturation takes place when immersed in a liquid. The details of procedure for determining (a) total volume of voids, and (b) rate and volume of penetration are given in this paper."

The Peelwood district of New South Wales is located some 65 miles south of Bathutst on the Tuena-Crookwell road. A number of occurrences of lead-zinc-copper ore are known from this district but only three mines, Peelwood, Cordillera and Mt. Costigan, have achieved any significant production. The purpose of the paper is to describe the mineral composition of sulphide ores from these three localities.HISTORYNo published information on the geology of the Peelwood area is available. Came (1899) reports that, at the time of cessation of mining operations in 1888, the Peelwood mine had produced some 600 tons of copper metal and regulus, the Cordillera mine had yielded 9000 tons of ore at the recoverable grade of 2·5 per cent Pb, 2·5 per cent Cu, 90z/ton Ag and 1 dwtjto:p. Au, but that no production figures were available from Mt. Costigan. No further work was carried out on these properties until 1951 when the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia instigated a programme of geological mapping and exploratory diamond drilling (Whitten, unpublished data, 1953). A201 aluminium alloy is a high strength casting alloy with a nominal composition of Al-4.6Cu-0.3Mg-0.6Ag. It is strengthened by the O(Al2Cu) phase and the ??(Al2Cu) phase during heat treatment. Further strengthening of this alloy system can be obtained through the addition of transition elements, but care must be taken as other elements might have adverse effects on the mechanical properties. The objective of this study is to determine the influence of Mn on the tensile properties of rheo-processed Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy A201. ThermoCalc software was used to predict the different phases that can be expected in the alloys, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to investigate the actual phases that formed. The influence of these phases on tensile properties is quantified. SEM and ThermoCalc revealed that there is an increased amount of the Al20Cu2Mn3 with increasing Mn. The tensile properties showed that high amounts of Mn do have adverse effects on the tensile properties of alloy A201, especially the ductility. Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

The Kilmar dolomitic magnesite deposit~ in sourhwesr Quebec lie in Grenville Province sedimentary rocks that strike north and dip steeply west. The sediments comprise quartzitic, carbonate and argillaceous members. The middle or carbonate member hosts the magnesite and, like the two other members, has been intensely mewmorphosed. Magnesite occurs as lenticular shaped zones of altered limestone and is mixed with 5 to 30% dolomite crystals. Diopside, serpentine and mica are common accessory minerals. Magnesite appears to have formed from merasomarism of all or part of the carbonate member due to intrusion of hot magnesia-rich solutions. Magnesite is mined from a 490 m vertical shaf1 and is milled and burned into clinkers, which then are shipped 10 pyroprocessing industries around the world.

When the Q-system was launched in 1974, the name referred to rock mass classification, with focus on tunnel and cavern support selection. Besides empirical design of support, the Q-value, or its normalized value Qc, has been found to correlate with seismic P-wave velocity, with deformation modulus, and with deformation. The Q-system provides temporary or permanent support for road, rail, and mine roadway tunnels and for caverns for various uses. It also gives relative cost and time for tunnel construction for a complete range of rock qualities. There are also indications that Q has captured important elements of the cohesive and frictional strength of rock masses, with Qc resembling the product of rock mass cohesion and rock mass friction coefficient.

INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end. The total length of the project is approximately 1900 meters consisting of four main project divisions, which are described below, going from south to north. 1.Operations and Maintenance Center (OMC) area, 2.Southern approach roadways to the South Portals (250 meters), including the South Rock Cut,

9K medium was used to isolate iron-oxidizing bacteria from 27 sump water samples collected from Dexing Cop-per Mine, Chengmen Mountain Mine and Yin Mountain Mine, Jiangxi Province, China. Lead acetate and silver nitrate were used to enrich metal-resistant iron-oxidizing bacteria from the above water samples. Isolate 16 was isolated from the sample taken at Dexing Copper Mine. Growth experiments indicated that when incubated under lead acetate (3,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation, while isolate H1, a less resistant strain taken at Yin Mountain Mine, had a tolerance level of only 400 mg/L. When assayed with other metals, i.e., Ag+ (240 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.9 mg/L), Cu2+ (32,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (22,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation while, on the other hand, isolate H1 exhibited much lower tolerance levels, i.e., Ag+ (60 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.1 mg/L), Cu2+ (19,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (13,500 mg/L). Based on 16S rDNA sequence data, isolate 16 and H1 were both identified as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.

In this study a generalized specification and costing model for high tonnage coal carrying conveyor belts of 3.5 to 100 miles is presented. These belt systems, in modular units or flights, of up to 9 miles in length can be considered in terms of gathering systems. The study format is sufficiently open to allow users to insert their own requirements and parameters. A specific case study is provided. Because conveyor belts are feasible almost anywhere, this study has not investigated any specific route or geographic location. Rather, it has concentrated on setting up an heuristic programming model for conveyor belt facility optimization and cost minimization. The analysis starts with the principle factors involved in the design of the system and their optimization for various cases. This is followed, in Section 5.4, with a factor by factor cost analysis based on industry data and the preceding optimization. The next step is the development of both facility and costing models suitable for computer analysis. Logic flow diagrams are presented at each major analytic step.

En ese sentido, para descartar la existencia de algún cuerpo del mismo mineral en las proximidades se propuso efectuar una prospección magnética terrestre. La asociación del talco con esquistos magnesianos y serpentinitas confiere validez al levantamiento geofísico, debido a la alteración de los esquistos que los torna ferromagnéticos, de forma que se determina que el yacimiento fue explotado. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el levantamiento magnetométrico como método magnético para determinar el cierre de una mina de talco como importante precedente para los exploradores de yacimientos de minerales no-metálicos."

With the gradual exhaustion of natural rutile, there has been extensive research into its synthesising from lower-grade titanium minerals. The removal of Fe from pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) by chlorination was studied, using both isothermal and non-isothermal thermogravimetric measurements. Correlation of the results obtained from element distribution maps, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and phases detected by X-ray diffraction in the chlorinated samples showed clearly two associated processes. First, the pseudobrookite particles reacted with chlorine and iron was removed selectively as FeCl3(g), leaving a solid residue rich in the TiO2 phases anatile and rutile, separated from an inner layer of unreacted pseudobrookite by a distinct interphase boundary. Second, chlorine allowed TiCl4(g) to form in the reaction bed, where it removed iron from the Fe2O3 crystals as FeCl3(g) and substituted Ti through a pseudomorphic reaction

Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A. G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids, and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue-gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 220°F for the calcining step and a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat-recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat-efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. tons/day of alumina heat consumption figures of less than 1·400 B.T.U./lb Al203 g were achieved.

Construction vibrations may adversely affect surrounding buildings and their effects range from human discomfort and disturbance of sensitive devices to visible structural damage. There is no unique conclusion regarding the effect of construction vibrations at every site. Measurement is usually made to monitor vibrations and control them with the vibration thresholds for disturbance of sensitive objects as well as damage to structures. To prevent potential litigation and mitigate the vibration effects on sensitive devices, people and structures, it is necessary to manage and minimize vibration problems before the beginning of construction activities or installation of vibrating machine foundations, and during construction. Pre-construction damage survey and engineering vibration investigations, including the prediction of anticipating vibrations, have to be made at most construction sites in advance of construction activities. Vibration monitoring and control have to be provided during construction. The instrumentation feedback of vibration prediction, monitoring and control provide the basis for choice of measures to prevent or mitigate vibration problems and settlement damage hazards.

PC-Strand tendons, commonly referred to as cable bolts, have become a major rock reinforcement device for underground mining and civil applications. The most common configuration is a 1+6 strand, which designates a center king-wire, with six outer wires wound around it to form a 0.6-in (15-mm) diameter cable. The capacity of this tendon approaches 30 tons, but the performance is largely dependent on the anchorage medium and the ability of the system to transfer stresses back into the rock mass while reinforcing and suspending the immediate roof. Recent developments to improve the transfer mechanisms of the PCstrand via the anchorage medium by impregnating the individual wires with uniquely designed deformations have resulted in improved anchorage and subsequent cable bolt performance. This paper describes a series of laboratory tests used to develop the initial indentation patterns and numerical modeling simulations that were undertaken to refine and optimize the final designs. The new, indented PC-Strands, offered in both bright and properly galvanized, have been tested in the field and are being used effectively in two new cable bolt products. The results of the laboratory, computer modeling, field testing and in-situ installations provide a glance at the next generation of cable bolts. This suite of testing shows how they will improve the safety and serviceability of openings under adverse ground conditions.

Durante a solidificação de ligas metálicas, o produto fundido se contrai, o qual provoca o surgimento de espaçamentos vazios na interface metal/molde chamados de “gaps”. Estes gaps causam o aumento da resistência térmica influenciando em toda a cinética da solidificação. A transferência de calor durante a solidificação depende do conhecido parâmetro chamado de coeficiente global de transferência de calor ( hg). Este parâmetro é representado pela equação do tipo: hg =C.t-n, a qual indica que a eficiência térmica na interface metal/molde decai com o tempo. Muitos parâmetros podem influenciar o coeficiente global de transferência de calor (hg), neste estudo, os percentuais de Sn em ligas do sistema Al-Sn são analisados (10,20,30 e 40%Sn). Portanto, o principal objetivo deste estudo é propor uma relação matemática que descreva, para o sistema Al-Sn, a evolução hg em função do teor de Sn. The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah, and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co. at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.

This is the ninth annual tabulation of royalty information. Again this year, some of the older information has been deleted to make room for more than 30 new entries. Several articles and publications crossed the author's desk this past year that relate to mineral valuation and mineral royalty. Tom Loucks presented a paper, "The Valuation of Hard Rock Mineral Property," at the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation in Santa Fe, NM in July, 1990. His paper gives an indepth explanation of the definitions and concepts related to mineral valuation. It includes descriptions of numerous legal cases that have dealt with mineral valuation and proper reference is given for each case. Loucks works for the Denver Mining Finance Co. Gold royalties generally range from 5% to 7%, net smelter return. However, Severn Brown sent information that shows a much wider variation. Echo Bay Mines reported in its 1989 annual report royalties that range from 1.5 % to 30% for gold from various gold properties. Brown also sent a copy of an article that appeared in the Dec. 27, 1982, issue of Fortune magazine. This issue carried an article by Walter Guzzardi, Jr. "The Huge Find in Roy Ash's Backyard." The article gives the history of Newmont's leasing in Nevada on property that became the Carlin, Bootstrap and Blue Star Mines. The article states that the initial royalty was 10% that escalated to more than 16%. Another property, the site of Gold Quarry, provides an 18% royalty to the same own¬ers. The article makes interesting reading for those interested in mining history.
