The Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma lead and zinc district, better known as the Joplin district, includes the mines in southwest Missouri and in those parts of Kansas and Oklahoma that are directly adjacent. (See PI. I.) This report of investigations carried on by the Bureau of Mines gives the methods used in mining and milling and indicates in some detail the conditions that affect the efficiency of those methods; it does not attempt to discuss the geology of the district, except incidentally, as this has been described in numerous reports by several geologists. Some of the more important recent publications are those of the United States Geological Survey by Smith and Siebenthal, a Bain, b and also those of the Missouri State geological survey by Buckley and Buehler." Other reports are those by Schmidt and Leonard," and Winslow,e of the Missouri geological survey, by Haworth and Crane,! of the Kansas geological survey, and by Jenney.g Although the lead and zinc ores are closely associated, the proportion of zinc ore mined at present is far greater than in former years. For this reason and because the losses in milling zinc ores are proportionately greater than in milling those of lead, the zinc ores are here given most consideration. Only the mines and mills actually examined and tested are discussed in detail, statements of results being restricted to the mines in general, with no special reference to anyone mine. Several mill tests were made to determine in a general way the efficiency of the milling practice in this district and to discover at what stage of the process the losses were greatest. Making these mill tests proved difficult,for, because of the arrangement of the mills and the necessity of estimating the tonnage treated, systematic mill testing and sampling can be done at only a few plants. Many tables giving results of mill tests and screen tests have been omitted because they would serve only to emphasize the important points shown by other data given. The writer has tried to bring out the possibilities of making certain improvements that would effect a greater saving, and has endeavored to avoid the use of technical terms and phrases in order that all statements may be clear and easily understood.

"AbstractThe PRESS-IN METHOD is widely recognised as “an environmentally friendly piling method”. However, this characteristic is only one of the fundamental advantages of the method and this paper presents the most up-to-date capabilities of the method. Due to the evolution in recent years, the Press-in Method is now applicable to 2.5m thick retaining walls, over 50m deep foundations, overcoming rock conditions and confined construction conditions.The Press-in PrinciplesThe basis of the Press-in Method is simple. The Silent Piler presses a pre-formed displacement pile into the ground by static jacking force. The reaction for the Press-in Force is generated by gripping previously installed piles. As a pile is pressed into the ground, “A Pressure Bulb” is formed around the pile toe. Accordingly, higher bearing capacity can be generated compared to driven piles without disturbing the ground and producing any vibration. (A comparison of jacked, driven and bored piles in sand (2005), Deeks et al.)Applicable Pile ProfileThe Press-in Method is applicable to most of the steel piles available on global market i.e. U sheet pile in single form and pair, Z sheet pile, also in single and pair and Tubular Pile as described in Figure 2. Wall thickness of those piles can be 0.3m to 2.5m and moment of inertia of the wall ranges up to about nine million biquadratic cm per meter, which can deliver similar elastic modulus EI (kNm2/m) to 2.0m thick diaphragm walls and can be utilised for extremely deep excavations required in today’s construction industry"

In this report, the use of Penn State Ventilation Simulator (PSU/MVS) for planning and evaluating new coal mine ventilation systems is demonstrated. The simulator's application to evaluate the ventilation system of a coal mine currently under development is discussed. The ventilation system is evaluated for representing development of the mine at the end of 12, 24 and 36 months after mining has begun. The report describes the necessary steps of data input preparation, ventilation network development, analysis of results, modifications to the network, and methods to expand the computer program for networks larger than 550 branches.

Strength of coal is one of the governing factors in size determination of mine pillars, and therefore affects the percentage of extraction and thus, utilization of reserves. Coal strength is also important from the subsidence control standpoint, where mine pillars with appropriate safety factors should be designed for long term stability. Determination of coal seam strength has been addressed through the extrapolation of the coal strength obtained from a small number of samples on the whole section of the seam. This procedure often gives unreliable results. Presented in this paper is a method of in-situ strength testing of coal, allowing for a realistic determination of seam strength. Results of a field case study dealing with the coal seam, where samples for the laboratory strength tests could not be obtained due to the dense cleat, are presented. However, in these conditions, the in-situ testing was successful. A comparison of both conventional and the in-situ penetrometer method was carried out. It was found that the penetrometer data not only improve the accuracy of strength determination of the entire seam, but also prove to be much more cost effective than the conventional method on a per test basis.

More than 410,000 visitors from 171 countries helped bauma ’04 set new attendance records at the world’s largest construction machinery and mining technology show. The show, held in Munich, Germany March 29-April 4, marked bauma’s 50th anniversary. At the last bauma show in 2001, attendance was about 406,000 people from 157 countries. At bauma ’04, international attendance increased to 31 percent from 27 percent in 2001. In addition to record-setting attendance, bauma ’04also attracted 2,801 exhibitors, up from 2,341 in 2001. Exhibitors came from the United States, Europe, China, Japan and the Middle East. Exhibitor space topped 500,000m2 (5.4 million sq ft), another record. And, for the first time, there were more foreign exhibitors than German exhibitors, show organizers said.

"Loss of coal fines in reject slurries limits the yield of coal cleaning operations. Difficulties in handling fines also limit the extent of physical cleaning in treating coals with finely-disseminated impurities. Selective oil agglomeration allows even extreme fines to be processed and offers some novel approaches for coal cleaning and utilization.The oil agglomeration process for the recovery and beneficiation of fine and ultrafine coal has now been commercialized by the Chemical Engineering Section/Chemistry Division of the National Research Council (NRC). This paper describes these activities to apply oil agglomeration and related fine coal technologies on an industrial scale. Pilot plant and large scale results are described, as well as aspects of agglomerate utilization in both wet and dry form."

Over the years, screen bowl centrifuges have been widely used for dewatering fine coal in coal preparation plants in the United States and elsewhere. Its popularity is attributed to its relatively low cost, its high capacity of providing low moisture content product and its relative ease of operation and maintenance. It is generally recognized in the engineering and scientific communities that screen bowl centrifuges provide some degree of particle size separation while dewatering fine coal in a common application. However, the extent of differential partitioning of coarse and fine particles achievable by a screen bowl centrifuge has not been systematically studied in the past. The present investigation was aimed at conducting a parametric study using a statistically designed experimental program to better understand and optimize the size classification performance of a screen bowl centrifuge. A continuously operating screen bowl centrifuge having a bowl diameter of 0.5 m was used for this study at the Illinois Coal Development Park. Three key operating parameters, i.e., feed flow rate, feed solid content and pool depth, were varied to conduct a total of 17 experiments using a three-level factorial test matrix. Some of the best size separation performances achieved in this study may be described as having an imperfection value of 0.13 at an effective separation size (d50c) of 38 µm and an imperfection value of 0.27 at an effective separation size (d50c) of 2.8 µm. Due to an effective separation of ultrafine high ash materials, the ash content of the screen bowl feed was reduced from 22.3% to a minimum of 8.84% with a combustible recovery of 84.1% and an ash rejection of 71.6%. A higher combustible recovery of 92.1% was achieved at a product ash content of 12.5% with a d50c of 2.8 µm and imperfection of 0.27.

Samples of an as extruded Mg-6Zn-0.6Zr-0.4Ag-0.2-Ca (wt.%) alloy was compressed at room temperature and at 250°C. The in situ deformation tests were performed at the P07 (HEMS) beamline of PETRA III, DESY, with a modified DIL 805 A/D dilatometer with to Kapton windows on the sides and the induction coil opened for the beam to transmit the sample. The deformation rate was 10-3 s-1 the samples were deformed to failure. The diffraction patterns were recorded every 3 s with a Perkin Elmer 1621 Flat Panel Detector. The results reveal that different deformation mechanisms are activated during compression at a given strain value. At room temperature twinning is the dominant deformation mechanism, while at elevated temperature dynamic recrystallization occurs while the contribution of twinning to deformation is significantly reduced. The compressed samples were further investigated with conventional metallography and SEM-EBSD to determine the volume fraction, the type of twinning and the strain retained within the grains. The parallel testing of pure Mg samples under the same conditions allows comparison of the compression behaviour of the ZKQX alloy with Mg.

Following the discovery by CRA of gold at Mt Kare, and the subsequent 1988-90 gold rush, mechanised mining of the alluvial resource is now being carried by a company jointly owned by CRA (51%) and landowners of the area (49%). Mining is currently being carried out using small gravity processing plants fed by hydraulic excavators. Use of hydraulic mining techniques will be limited to over- coming difficulties related to the high clay content of the material and the soft nature of the bedrock. Current resource estimates suggest that the alluvials will have a mining life of three to four years. During this time, exploration of the hydrothermal gold mineralisation at Mt Kare will be carried out by a wholly-owned company of CRA. It is hoped that this will lead to establishment of an economic primary gold resource.

"IntroductionThe Chairman, in his speech to this body last year in Montreal, stated that the Dominion Coal Board looked to and depended upon the Bureau of Statistics for statistical material, and the Bureau does collect and publish monthly and annual data on coal. It may therefore be asked why an officer of the Dominion Coal Board should prepare and give a talk on statistics.I would explain that it has been our experience in the Board that, since the supply and consumption of coal in Canada is subject to a seasonal ebb and flow, it can be more profitably studied on the basis of a twelve-month period ending on March 31st than of a calendar year, since the end of March does represent a fairly stable end point in this ebb and flow. The figures are not prepared or published by the Bureau on that basis and it has therefore been thought that a presentation on this fiscal-year period would be of interest. The Bureau of Statistics has agreed that this may be valuable and all the data here presented are based on the reports secured from various sources by the Mining, Metallurgical and Chemical Division, Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The only contribution by either myself or the staff of the Dominion Coal Board has been the tabulation in a different twelve month period, and the comments upon the picture presented.It should be noted that the data for the month of March, 1950, are not available in all cases and consequently the figures for that year contain an estimate for this month."

The Southwest Pacific is a region of active volcanism and geothermal systems. Only in New Zealand have the geothermal systems been exploited for electricity generation and industrial processing. At present, approximately 280 MWe of geothermal electricity is generated in New Zealand. A considerable amount of further exploration work is required before the total geothermal potential of the region can be assessed and before the significance of these resources can be judged against other local energy sources.

Amostragem pode ser definida como a sequência de operações que visam retirar do todo (lote) uma parcela (amostra) que conserve as propriedades de interesse do lote. O menor erro possível em um protocolo de amostragem é chamado de erro fundamental de amostragem (FSE), o qual está associado à heterogeneidade constitucional do minério e pode ser estimado através de testes de heterogeneidade. A realização do teste de heterogeneidade com minério fonte de zinco, proveniente da mina de Vazante, permitiu concluir que a heterogeneidade da willemita é menor que a heterogeneidade de minérios de ouro e maior que a de minérios fonte de alumínio, por exemplo. Além disso, os resultados do teste de heterogeneidade permitiram a otimização do protocolo de preparação de amostras do laboratório físico, reduzindo o erro total de 13,4% para 6,0% sem investimentos em infraestrutura de laboratório.

It must be emphasized that this investigation was started several months ago.On the other hand, it is known that acid water exists in some underground mining operations as well as in open pit mining operations all over the world. Taking into account this problem, our work teamdecided to carry out the present investigation. Therefore, it ensures a decrease in blasting costs avoiding this problem and as well as this, it allows to reducing fatal accidents that could occur caused by poor control of acid waters within mining operations."

Com o estudo realizado em artigos técnicos e acadêmicos e vivência no ramo industrial, ficou evidente uma deficiência no desempenho dos sistemas de controle regulatório das plantas industriais. Parte dessa deficiência é proveniente da falta de engenheiros de controle para auditar as malhas de controle regulatório. Foi realizado em um forno de tratamento térmico, um trabalho de auditoria das malhas de controle regulatório, baseando-se em uma metodologia já existente na literatura. Levantou-se informações do processo do forno como, os controladores automáticos, o sistema de aquisição de dados e a infraestrutura de rede de automação e por seguinte, as implementações dos PID's no CLP. Após essa contextualização, métricas para avaliar o desempenho inicial das malhas foram utilizadas e então, o funcionamento dos elementos de controle utilizados no forno foram diagnosticados através de ferramental estatístico e análise dos sinais na ferramenta PIMS. Adquirido o conhecimento necessário sobre o processo e o diagnosticado de maneira concisa, ações corretivas e de otimização foram realizadas e propostas com o intuito de otimizar o desempenho das malhas de controle. Por fim, os índices de desempenho do sistema são recalculados e os valores comparados com os valores pré auditoria, concluindo que pode ser possível melhorar alguns dos principais termos adotados no negócio como redução de custos, aumento de produtividade e sustentabilidade.

Engineers at the Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center have been a research program investigating the theory and application of mine sampling. Part of this program is an investigation of the efficiency of sampling methods that involves development of sampling-method theory through simulating ore-deposit samples and assays, using - electronic digital computer. Theoretical developments are checked against actual ore-deposit sampling, assay, and production data by the commonly used polygonal and triangular methods of computing grade and tonnage of ore reserves. To speed the computing procedures, a program has been developed utilizing a medium-size digital computer for computing ore reserves by the polygonal method. This program calculates nine prismoids per minute at a total cost of $0.21 per prismoid. The complete program, written for an augmented IBM 650 computer, is described in detail; it can be used without change for computing ore reserves for a low-grade deposit. Modifications necessary to convert the program to compute ore reserves for virtually any other type of deposit or grouping of ore horizons also are given; however, the program is limited to using only vertical drill-hole data.

Many future and current block and panel caves extract ore from veined rock masses. These rock masses are composed of open joints forming blocks or rock with healed networks of veinlets. These two types of discontinuities pose a challenge for rock mass characterisation and classification due to difficulties in distinguishing actually open joints from healed but weak veins when diamond core drilling and excavation blasting practices disturb the rock mass. The inability of separating characteristics of open joints and healed veins has often resulted in an underestimation of the rock mass quality and as a consequence led to inappropriate assessments of rock mass response to mining (ie rock mass behaviour) and consequently deficient excavation stability assessments and ground support designs. In this paper, guidelines are provided to improve the characterisation and classification of veined rock masses. It is shown how veined rock masses can be mischaracterised resulting in often incorrect forecasting of rock mass behaviour. Following this, the classification of veined rock masses is examined. It is shown how the primary classification systems (ie Q – Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; rock mass rating (RMR) – Bieniawski, 1976) may not lead to reliable ratings in veined rock masses if care is not taken to differentiate between open joints and veins of varying strength. Examples are provided to illustrate how the Q and RMR systems are insensitive to veining. Finally, an example of characterising a veined rock mass for design purposes is presented.CITATION:Bewick, R P and Kaiser, P K, 2016. The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. INTRODUCTION Methods for Removing Static Electricity Of the various means employed for preventing or removing accumulations of static electricity in industrial processes, grounding is the most common and most generally effective. It is a precaution readily applied to stationary machines anti may often be utilized to good advantage to rid persons and portable equipment of an acquired charge. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A.
