"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. The mining industry has had three difficult years. Commodity prices have remained low and investor confidence in the industry has been shaken. And even though the Asian economy appears to be improving, it will be some time before this improvement will translate into better commodity price conditions for mining. In addition, increased environmental and social restrictions that have been placed on the industry in developed and developing countries have made mining a more difficult proposition. And, if that is not enough, the global mining industry has found itself in fierce competition with Internet businesses for investor capital. Despite that gloomy picture, more than 10,500 mining industry professionals from about 70 countries gathered in Toronto, Ontario March 5-10, 2000 for the Mining Millennium 2000 conference. This meeting was a joint effort between the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum(CIM) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).The joint meeting also featured two trade exhibitions and more than 150speakers. PDAC’s trade show attracted about 400 exhibitors and an additional 200 in the concurrent Investors’ Exchange. CIM’s exhibition attracted about 600 equipment and service companies.

This paper presents the results of a review of historic blast design practices at the Dragon Products Company, LLC (Dragon) Quarry Operation, along with the results of two different blast design vibration monitoring programs. A blast pattern design modification was initiated to determine if production volume per shot could be increased and highwall instability could be decreased. A vibration monitoring program was undertaken to investigate peak particle velocity (PPV) and relate the data to the blastability of the jointed onsite rock mass, utilizing the relationship between PPV and dynamic stress and strain. The Dragon Quarry Operation has historically used a 6-in. diameter, 14-ft by 14-ft production blast pattern, with blast holes loaded manually using cartridge style explosive products. In 2011, Quarry Operations introduced a 6-in diameter, 16-ft by 16-ft production blasting pattern, using pre-mixed, truck-loaded, bulk emulsion/ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) blends. This paper summarizes the results of the blast design modifications, the results of the vibration monitoring data, and describes how production blasting and excavation at the Dragon Quarry has benefited from such modifications.

The influence of bacterial growth phase on the flotation behavior of malachite has been investigated in a well-controlled Hallimond tube system. The microflotation tests were conducted for malachite (45?53 µm) using different amounts (bulk phase concentration=1×108?5×109 cells/mL) of Rhodococcus opacus (R. opacus) as a collector, which was grown at mid-exponential versus stationary phase, at a constant speed (340 rpm), pH (6), and malachite-bacteria interaction and flotation time (each 10 min). Hug differences between R. opacus cells in mid-exponential and stationary phase was observed from the results for electrophoretic mobility and flotation tests. Specifically, the isoelectric point of the cells in the stationary phase was lower than that in the mid-exponential phase, suggesting that the amount and distribution of surface functional groups onto cell surfaces are likely different. Additionally, the cells in stationary phase led to significant increase in the flotability compared to those in mid-exponential phase over the background bacterial concentration level of 1×108?5×109 cells/mL. Furthermore, the flotation efficiency tended to increase with increasing cell dosage for stationary phase cells while no distinct difference was observed for mid-exponential cells.

This is especially relevant to shafts of long dimension where the duration from time of exposure to time of support installation is lengthy This paper deals with the innovative methodology employed at Harmony?s No. 8 Shaft 17/24 level sub ventilation shaft to rapidly support a shale intersection between 23 and 24 Level by employing a single deck stage suspended from the reamer head by means of Skyjack winches.

It is commonly accepted that the tension of roof bolts can be used as a measure of the effectiveness of roof support performance in coal bearing strata. The conceptual base for the assumption originates from beam theory. Roof bolt tension acting across the bedding and other weakness planes increases friction, preventing potential separation and slippage within the roof strata and therefore, increases the stiffness of the roof beam between the open face and the rock-mass enclosed within the anchorage. Thus, it is important to monitor roof bolt tension, especially for research purposes, and consequently many measuring systems were developed based on numerous working principles. Research planned by the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky required a large number of tension measuring devices of high precision. These were intended to operate reliably in corrosive mine environment over long periods of time. After evaluating the existing systems, it was decided to develop a new type of roof bolt dynamometer which would fulfill the above requirements at minimal Cost. Nearly one hundred such dynamometers were constructed, calibrated and installed in two underground mines. They remained in service for a period of one Year, producing a valuable database for the Project. In this paper the working principle of this new type of dynamometer will be described and technical considerations and samples of the collected data will be given.

In most mines using presplitting the final excavated wall shows a zone of damage just below the crest and well defined presplit half barrels. The crest damage (surface dilation) zone varies and is added to by subsequent adjacent perimeter blasting operations. Keeping the preconditioning to a minimum is possible using the methods described in this paper, developed on several diverse and geographically distant mining operations to control crest dilation and preconditioning by presplitting in advance - not just laterally but vertically in advance. The first documented case (Delbridge, Marton and McSweeney, 2004) in the development of the concept was undertaken at AngloGold Australia Pty Ltd's Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM), located beside Lake Carey, some 730 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The mine had been developed in a series of cutbacks to a depth of over 300 m and began underground mining during the latter stages of open cut operations. This mine is fairly unique in that it utilised a single pass vertical presplit which initially extended over three bench heights and after the failure mechanisms were understood, over four benches. The presplit drilling for the three stacked benches started on the floor of the second bench so that any dilation was confined to the surface one bench above the crest and modified perimeter blasting was then developed to curtail damage from blasting adjacent to the new crest. The second case is based on a South African coal mine in the Witbank Coal Measures, 140 km northeast of Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa (RSA). It was important that blasting for optimal wall stability and minimal scaling was developed in advance. A dragline is scheduled to excavate the #2 seam midburden which is the lowest of the economically viable coal seams in the five seam Witbank Coal Measures. Mining of the overburden, coal and partings above the dragline midburden pass are by excavator and truck and each mining layer is individually blasted. The results of presplitting the midburden through the overlying coal seams and partings have provided a presplit with no surface dilation of the midburden crest and ensures any subsequent crest loss is solely due to blasting adjacent to the vertical presplit. Typical of all coal mines in South Africa only vertical presplits are used. Wall control is most commonly delivered by presplit blasting and one common sight after the dust clears is a ridge of broken blocks along the presplit row, usually with a main crack running between the presplit blastholes and often parallel cracks either side of the perimeter line. The surface rock strata or block structures have been dilated by the venting gases and shock waves. Decoupled, fully coupled, single or double deck charges are used depending on a variety of factors, anecdotal practices and perceived benefits. Preconditioning of the crest rock by blasting from above may not be visible to the naked eye (or non-existent in overburden in strip coal mines) but the high speed venting of explosives gases (and often the water in the presplits) preferentially follow existing cracks and structures because there is no developed presplit crack near the surface. This nearly always lifts, shifts and separates the surface structures and geological layers. Stopping the dilation by 'sacrificial' or 'in advance' presplitting has been shown to reduce the crest loss at both metal and coal mines. Drilling and presplit blasting through an upper level of bench or layer provides a degree of restraint to the target layer where the crest must be maintained and any damage caused by the venting gases will not cause concern as it is removed as planned, leaving a stable crest.

A number of impending and actual pit wall failures have been observed and documented, which have been interpreted to initiate on newly generated structural features. This infers failure through intact rock. Failure mechanisms have been postulated resulting from circumferential stress, extensional strain and brittle flexure. These will be discussed in the context of the failures and the associated monitoring. The implications of failure initiating on ?unknown? features has a significant impact for deep open pit mines where designs are based on the expected structural regime. Being able to anticipate such failures is important for design. Equally important is management of such changes as they arise. In this context, monitoring using high resolution microseismic techniques will be discussed as a means of providing early warning of such failures.

For establishing sustainable material cycle process in human system, a brand new concept should be created, which could recycle the waste materials, which are land-filled and discarded under present economical situation. The concept of 'RtoS' (Reserve (of waste) to Stock) to create 'artificial deposit' of the materials concentrate is one of the best ideas to be applied. From this viewpoint, separation technology, in especial, solid phase separation such as mineral processing technology contributes much to the concentration, making 'artificial deposit' with less energy consumption compared with melting and/or dissolving technologies. Results of rare metals concentration in the e-waste are also introduced as an example with combining novel comminution and parts/powder separation.

An international prediction event was carried out within the framework of a 30-pile testing program organized in a sandy soil in Belgium (Limelette). That program called upon sev­eral testing methods: static load tests, Statnamic testing, and dynamic testing. This paper provides a summary of received predictions and results obtained from the static pile load tests, which were carried up to failure of the instrumented piles. The comparison between predictions is made using load-settlement curves with reference to the results of the static load tests. The predictions are based on a geotechnical approach using an extensive soil investigation program and a dynamic approach using the dynamic load test data.

El presente trabajo describe la optimización del proceso de planta de ánodos en la refinería peruana a través del uso de equipos e instalaciones, sin una necesidad de ampliarlos con los hornos de afino. rueda de modelo o prensa de ánodos. Este proceso utiliza como materia prima las barras de cobre blister, las cuales son enviadas vía ferrocarril desde la fundición de SPCC al norte de la refinería. Luego,este cobre blister es cargado a los hornos junto con los ánodos corroídos, el recirculante de ambas plantas, los desechos de cobre, etc., de acuerdo al programa de flete previo al carguío. Finalmente, se inicia el proceso que comprende: fusión, oxidación, reducción, escorificación y moldeo. De acuerdo a este proceso, la planta de ánodos ha mejorado la calidad física y química de los ánodos e incrementó su producción, efectuando los trabajo en equipos y estabilizando los estándares de seguridad.

Mexico’s role in the world economic community continues to grow. And it is important that the country makes use of its natural wealth, including its large underground deposits of minerals and metals. With that in mind, Industrias Peñoles S.A. de C.V.(Peñoles), a mining, smelting and refining company, began mining lead, zinc and other metals from the Francisco I. Madero Project (FIM). The mine is located about 600 km (370 miles) northwest of Mexico City in the state of Zacatecas. Peñoles plans to remove about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of ore from FIM. To achieve this goal, the company needs to optimize its processing, to maximize the amount of metal it extracts through FIM’s large flotation lead-zinc concentrator. To ensure high productivity, Peñoles and its contract engineering firm, M3 Engineering and Technology, of Tucson, AZ, have implemented anore processing system.

The stability of parallel underground coal mine galleries and pillars have been investigated using two- and three-dimensional (3D) numerical stress analysis. Anisotropic horizontal in situ stresses and the direction of the excavations have been considered in the numerical analysis. The stability of the tunnels driven in a coal seam at various working depths has been investigated taking into account different strata conditions and then results from two- and three-dimensional numerical modelling studies were compared. Maximum principal stress components have been chosen in three various directions: vertical, parallel and perpendicular to the tunnel axis. Analysis have shown that in the anisotropic in situ stress field, the favourable direction of underground mine openings which have different strata conditions depend not only on the horizontal in situ stresses but also on the vertical in situ stresses. Furthermore, 3D numerical modelling studies have been carried out to investigate stability of multiple entry longwall panel gate roads and pillars with various width-to-length ratios (W/L). Results of the modelling studies have shown that the critical dimension of coal pillars depends on their width and the direction of maximum horizontal stresses.

The adsorptive and granulate forming MetClean™ process has been used at many locations in Northern Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Spain, Mongolia, Japan and Australia. It has been pilot tested and used in full scale treatment plants to remove metals from:mine watersleachate from solid waste in incineration flue gasleachate from fly ash damsleachate from landfill and waste ponds.The following paper provides details of pilot and plants tests on the effectiveness of MetClean™ in removing arsenic, antimony, barium, cadmium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, radium, uranium, vanadium and zinc. Results show that MetClean™ may reduce the concentration of these metals in treated effluent water to the one part per billion (ppb) range.The paper also finds that, for specific metals, the optimal adsorption condition depends on the:pH levelmolar relation between the specific targeted metal and the addition of iron (II) or manganese (II)type of oxidation agentssalinity levelpresence of other metals.The most effective pH level varies according to the targeted metal but falls within the pH 5 to pH 11 range. A compromise pH level may be set when more than one metal is targeted for removal at the same time and through only one process step. The removal efficiency of one or both metals may be affected by operating at a compromise rather than optimum pH level.The MetClean process generates non-hazardous solid waste. AN EXTENSIVE characterization was conducted on the neutral oil components in a low-temperature bituminous coal tar. A total of tai individual compounds identified with respect to individual isomers, and at least 55 other compounds were indicated to be present. The amounts were determined in all instances. A comparison of isomeric distribution in the tar with thermo-dynamic equilibrium distribution, and kinetic distributions indicated that the composition of the tar largely reflected the structure of the coal from which it was formed. Detailed descriptions are presented for the separatory and qualitative and quantitative procedures for the characterization of the neutral oil component. These include micro fractional vacuum distillation, displacement liquid chromatography, gas-liquid chromatography, countercurrent distribution, and infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Descriptions are given for the synthesis of authentic specimens of alkylindenes, The ultraviolet and infrared spectra of 134 polycyclic compounds, ranging from alkylindenes to alkylphenanthrenes, either found in the distillable neutral oil, or thought likely to be present, are also given.

The discovery that triggered the current gold rush in southeastern Peru was made in about 1975 along the Rio Madre de Dios in Madre de Dios Department (Fig. 1). About 5000 to 10,000 miners (called chichiqueros) were working in the area as of 1990. Placer mining is the principal source of revenue for people living along the Rio Inambari and west of Puerto Maldonado. As in past gold rushes, working and living condition are harsh. Supplies are expensive, and the area has poor access compared with other areas in Peru. Food, fuel and all mining supplies are trucked over dirt roads from Cuzco, a three-to-five-day trip (Fig. 1). Some material also comes from Brazil. Many placers have a similar life cycle, beginning with small-volume mining (surface or underground). At the end of this small-scale mining, the placer is exhausted or it has a sufficient volume of gravel high enough in gold grade to be worked by large-volume methods, which lead to exhaustion of the resource. The level of maturity of a placer can be determined from its gold grade. The amount of gold production from large-volume mining can be predicted, given detailed, cumulative gold-production data on placer deposits during small-scale mining (Bliss et al., 1987). Using this general model, the authors analyzed the placers in the Rio Madre de Dios area. Small-volume mining Most placer mining in the Rio Madre de Dios area is in alluvial deposits either in or bordering the major rivers. Locally, some placer mining is in terrace deposits above the rivers. All minerals (including the subsoil) in Peru belong to the state. However, a mining claim (denuncia) is easily obtained for mineral exploitation. It is separate from property ownership.

"This paper addresses the initial results of a project to evaluate the suitability of copper mining tailings as raw material for the production of structural products using PMET’s patented technology. Preliminary testing indicated that high performance structural products were possible using these materials. A demonstration scale project produced approximately 1,500 bricks in various colors. These products fall under under ASTM C- 73 and were found to present properties suitable for severe weather applications. Although the products in this project were of typical brick dimensions, other products are possible, for example concrete block substitutes or pavers. These products from the PMET process are commercially known as Brixx. This paper will provide operational details of the production process, mineralogy and mechanical properties of the products.INTRODUCTIONPMET has developed process technology that can convert various siliceous waste materials into competent structural products. This technology is the subject of US patent # 6,068,803. In general, the process consists of mixing lime, water and the major feed stock, pressing to form a “green” shape, and curing the product in an autoclave for 6 hours with saturated steam at ~200oC. The curing process forms Tobermorite, which acts as a crystalline binder. Freeport-McMoRan approached PMET to see whether mine tailings from the Sierrita mine, containing significant amounts of clay, might be a suitable feed material for the production of structural products. “Brixx” is the commercial term used to describe the resultant structural product formed in the test work. This paper is a preliminary evaluation of a technology that is being considered by Freeport-McMoRan. This report is not an endorsement by Freeport-McMoRan of the process or products, nor is it a commitment to use this technology."

The theme of the 2012 North American Tunneling conference (NAT) was ?Tunneling: Driving Value.? This theme best reflects where the tunneling and underground construction industry is to-day. Major advances that have been made in technologies have provided tremendous improvements in productivity, which, in turn, have allowed the industry to deliver more cost-effective and less disruptive solutions to the nation?s infrastructure needs. Despite a weak economy, domestically and globally, cities and states continue to spend billions on infrastructure improvements. For the underground construction industry, that means more transportation and water, wastewater, storm water projects and other underground structures. And, for each project completed, underground construction and tunneling technology grows. The NAT conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME, provides an outlet for technology transfers among professionals. This year?s conference, held in Indianapolis, IN June 24-27, attracted 918 attendees, up from 803 at the last NAT in 2010. The accompanying exhibit also featured 116 exhibitors occupying 140 booths. That was up from 108 booths in 2010. So, the meeting continues to grow as underground construction professionals throughout the world seek to learn from their peers.

To meet salt production needs over the remaining life of the Cayuga Mine at Lansing, New York, the Salt Division of Cargill, Inc. decided to build a new underground screening plant. The new plant required a chamber 50 feet wide by 250 feet long and nearly 70 feet high. On advice of their mining contractor, Dynatec Mining Company, the company chose an ingenious excavation method similar to sublevel stoping. This method eliminated the need for an access ramp, reduced equipment needs and excavation time substantially.

The famous Golden Mile of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was, between 1888 and 19ft, one of the richest and most important gold camps in the world. Annual production, which reached a peak of nearly 1,300,000 oz. in 1903, however dropped to below 400,000 oz. after 1920.Depression seized the camp, and many mines closed down. The output from this old field is now steadily mounting under the stimulus. of a higher price for gold. In 1935 300,000 oz. of precious metal were recovered and the future is bright. Total production from the field is 21,400,000 oz., whereas something like £23,600,000 have been paid in dividends.The Golden Mile has been studied by many geologists. Their somewhat diverse findings were published for the most part in the Australian technical press which, unfortunately, is not sufficiently represented in foreign libraries.The following article is based on an eighteen months' study in the district for Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd., preceded by four years' experience with almost identical rock types in the, Porcupine district of Ontario.
