Mountain Top Removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly thirty years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches thick with total recovery and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. It is highly efficient even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in aerial extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian Coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) for the past thirty years with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impacts on the surroundings in the history of MTR mining. However, in the past two years the debate over the MTR mining has grown quickly and in times become very intensely. This paper describes chronologically the issues raised by various parties, legal actions, its impacts on mining permit application and research projects developed to address the issues.

This bulletin reviews the historical background of the cold-mold arc-melting technology, with specific references to the development that led to homogeneous zirconium ingots. Descriptions are given of modern production arc-furnaces for vacuum melting of troth exotic and conventional metals. Besides zirconium, specific data are given for production of chromium, thorium, and copper. The development of the skull-casting technique for titanium is detailed, and the application of the technique to such refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten is described. Factors of operation of the apparatus and furnace design are considered.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Alumina supported gold catalyst prepared by spray reaction method (spr) provides gold particle with about 20 nm of diameter. The gold particle size is larger than conventional gold catalysts. However, the spr catalyst shows higher catalytic activity for NO-CO reaction. In the present paper, we have discussed the local structures of spr-Au/Al2O3 catalyst by using Au L3-edge XANES spectra. In order to investigate the local structures of Au-sites, multiple scattering approach to XANES analysis was applied. Calculated Au L3-edge XANES spectra for fcc-Au and Au2O3 were in good agreement with the observed spectra. XANES spectra for spr-Au/Al2O3 were characterized by 4 types of Au sites (bulk, interface, surface and peripheral). In this case, almost all gold sites (> 90 %) are bulk site. The other sites are less than 10 % of gold particle. However, the experimental and the calculated results of Au L3-edge XANES spectra for spr-Au/Al2O3 require about 30 % of gold oxide or hydroxide. Bulk of Al2O3 contains a certain number of gold nano-particles, which was incorporated in the bulk Al2O3 support. In the interface area, gold oxide forms a few layers. This result was also supported by DV-Xa electronic structure calculations. The comparison of the catalytic activities of the spray catalysts and the impregnation catalyst for the NO-CO reactions imply synergy effects between gold nano-particles and alumina support.

La construcción del diseño de plantas de tratamiento de carbón contiene cuatro soportes: las pruebas de laboratorio, especificaciones generales, planos topográficos e información económica, las cuales legitimizan su avance estructural y mejoran el producto minero. Así también su construcción requiere de cierto conocimiento íntimo del material, de las maquinarias y los procesos a emplearse. Un plano de diseño parece un acertijo en las que las unidades se aglomeran y los transportadores, elevadores, chutes, tuberías y cables forman una imagen extraña y un tanto artística. La función de este diseño de tratamiento busca contener el organismo, llenar la función y permitir la vigilancia, reparación y mantenimiento de las unidades, evitando cualquier exceso de espacio pues sería perjudicial y antieconómico. "

"The Aqqaluk deposit is a lead-zinc ore body that lies immediately north of the Main Pit at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine in Alaska. It is scheduled to begin production in 2011 or 2012. A project team was formed in late 2004 to plan and implement an ore characterisation and metallurgical evaluation on the Aqqaluk ore. The main objective of this program was to facilitate the transition from Main Pit to Aqqaluk ore in the Red Dog concentrator. The program will develop a detailed, spatially-oriented characterisation of the Aqqaluk deposit attributes including lithology, ore geochemistry, bulk mineralogy, ore texture, as well as evaluating the metallurgical characteristics of ore hardness, process water geochemistry, bench-scale floatability and mineral liberation in ground feed, concentrate and tails. Developing correlations between the metallurgical response and the ore characterisation data is key to the emerging science of geometallurgy. This on-going program is a technical due diligence study that aims to reduce the risk associated with processing a new ore and to provide predictive information for mining and stockpile preparation.The test work to date has focused on characterising the five ore zones currently identified in the Aqqaluk deposit, namely: Siliceous (sub-divided to High Zn:Fe and Low Zn:Fe), Vein, Median Plate and Baritic ores. It identified a number of challenges associated with surface oxidation, or weathering, of the core samples and outlined a program for future sample collection and storage. Metallurgical testing evaluated ore hardness by a variety of methods. Preliminary floatability studies have been completed and some initial links have been established between the ore characteristics and the flotation response. Soluble mineral weathering products, the relative abundance of pyrite and marcasite and the iron content in the sphalerite grains have all shown a correlation to mineral recovery.As new core is received, both the ore characterisation and the metallurgical testing will be continued with a view to strengthen the existing correlations and develop new links."

The Bureau of Mines is involved in research directed toward the conserva¬tion of important raw materials and the utilization of solid waste. Two of the objectives are to conserve high-quality coking coals used for foundry coke and to utilize waste materials of marginal quality but of high calorific value. These objectives are consistent with Bureau goals. Pilot plant cupola trials were made to evaluate the adequacy of various alternative fuels, and to determine to what extent they could replace the foundry coke in cupola charges. Information was obtained on furnace performance, metal and slag chemistry, environmental questions, and the properties of castings. It was shown that anthracite or bituminous coals can partially replace charge coke up to the 40 pet level. Briquetted materials prepared from fuel fines, and waste prod¬ucts or byproducts of high calorific value, all tend to break down on heating in a cupola so that their use must be restricted to below 20 pet replacement. In cases where pitch-bonded coal fines or petroleum coke were used, carbon pickup by the iron was inadequate for gray iron specifications. Although emphasis during this work was placed on basic slag practice, some acid practice results are included.

Pile driving started October 29, 1993 and was completed on January 27, 1994. Field work included driving piling from ground surface at one site and at or near proposed footing elevations for the remainder. Piles were driven to specified tip elevations or the elevations directed by the Project Manager. In an attempt to address what installation technique(s) performed the best, several methods were used, including varied predrilled depths, open ended piles, closed ended piles, and the use of both impact and vibratory hammers. Piles were driven closed ended where possible to study the feasibility of this option to reduce construction costs associated with pile cleanout. Piles were driven to different depths to measure capacity variations. The 24-inch (610 mm) diameter piling were driven in one piece while the 42-inch (1.07 m) diameter piling was driven in two segments. A total of 79 piles were driven for the four sites, 74 of the 24-inch (610 mm) diameter and 5 of the 42-inch (1.07 m) diameter. Various hammers were used to determine which hammers provided viable solutions to the potential problems anticipated in the design phase. Hammer selection was based on the driveability studies. Equipment included a 175 ton (1.56 MN) crane, support crane for pile stabilization, crane mounted auger drill, offshore leads, Delmag D30-32, D46-32, and D62-22 diesel hammers, an HPSI 2005 single acting hydraulic hammer, a Foster IHC S-90 double acting hydraulic hammer and a Kencho VM2-25000AII vibratory hammer with the weights set to produce 17,500 pound-inch (1.98 kN-m) of eccentric moment.

En aplicaciones a elevadas temperaturas como por ejemplo en cámaras de combustión y toberas de vehículos aeroespaciales se requiere el uso de aleaciones que permitan una elevada extracción de calor y buenas propiedades mecánicas. En este trabajo se realiza un análisis comparativo de las aleaciones Cu-Cr-Zr y Cu-Ag-Zr. Las mismas fueron sometidas a ensayos de resistividad eléctrica entre 25ºC y 700ºC y de tracción a 150ºC, 450ºC y 700ºC. Los resultados de los ensayos de resistividad eléctrica fueron convertidos a conductividad térmica mediante la relación de Wiedemann- Franz. A través de este análisis se observa que la aleación con mejor conductividad térmica es la de Cu-Ag-Zr presentando además un cambio de fase que no es observado en la aleación Cu-Cr-Zr. Respecto al ensayo de tracción la aleación Cu-Cr-Zr presenta mayores valores de resistencia a la tracción y tensión de fluencia a las temperaturas estudiadas.

In 1994 the world's largest underwater tunnel was constructed to link Canada and the U.S.A. This new tunnel was large enough to accommodate double-decker railway cars. The construction of an unplanned Retrieval Shaft was required to allow removal and servicing of the Cutterhead of the Tunnel Boring Machine before it passed under the St. Clair River. This paper, which is a revision of that published in Canadian Tunnelling, has been modified here to emphasize construction considerations and describes the evolution of the design and construction of this "Rescue Shaft" under extreme schedule pressure, and changed ground conditions..

To achieve safe and healthy working conditions in shaft sinking operations, ventilation, and where necessary cooling, must be provided. These requirements are considered for sinking vertical, sub-vertical and decline shafts. Regulatory requirements, determining air volumes and amount of cooling required, the various ventilation methods used such as force, exhaust, twin columns, air reversal using four gate systems and the equipment required to achieve this, are discussed. Consideration is also given to the sinking of single and twin declines using diesel equipment, calculating the air volumes required to dilute pollutants and the various methods for achieving this. Also discussed is the importance of having early ventilation design input to the overall design of the mine. In many cases ventilation can be the prime determinant for the size and configuration of the shafts or declines that have to be sunk.

This paper presents a case study in West Malaysia for passive piles failure in very soft marine clay in open excavation. In this particular case, the thickness of the very soft marine clay ranges from 5 m to 7 m (16 ft to 23 ft) from the ground surface. Preliminary site investigation reported SPT ?N? value of zero for the very soft marine clay. The design was based on a deep foundation utilizing driven piles to support the superstructure. During pile cap construction, the piles were subjected to uncontrolled open excavation, inducing bending moment in the piles, resulting in some cracked and broken piles. Analyses were carried out using an existing three-dimensional finite element code with a non-linear soil model to predict the response of these piles during excavation. Finally, the predictions of pile responses during excavation were compared satisfactorily with the observed results.

This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF's unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifications, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and viability of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

En este sentido, el objetivo del texto señala la estabilidad económica de la industria como único medio posible para mejorar la producción a través la investigación, tecnificación y mecanización de métodos de trabajo en la minería de cielo abierto. La investigación permite que se reduzca los costos de producción que va desde el minado hasta la aplicación y uso de los metales por las industrias manufactureras. Asimismo el objetivo principal de la investigación es buscar nuevos métodos que mejoren la eficiencia de los equipos y mayor rendimiento en el trabajo. Finalmente, se hace una breve revisión histórica de la minería metálica donde se señala la función de la investigación y la técnica empleada en la mina a cielo abierto como parte del progreso de la industria. Este trabalho objetivou comparar, por meio de experimentos desenvolvidos em uma fundição, através da adição de três inoculantes diferentes (IM-22 com FeSi-Ba/Zr, G 20 com FeSi-Ba) e IMSR 75 com FeSi-Sr), para observar as características da vida util de ferramentas na usinabilidade das peças, microestrutura e propriedade mecânica. A metodologia da pesquisa se baseou em analisar principalmente pelo processo de fresamento o ferro fundido cinzento GG-25 inoculado diferentemente, denominado de acordo com a Norma DIN EN 1561. As formas de avaliação dos resultados terão como base uma análise quanto ao desgaste da ferramenta, acabamento superficial, análise microestrutural, composição química e propriedades mecânicas do material da peça. Os resultados mostraram que dentre os inoculantes aplicados o com Sulfeto de Estrôncio (SrS) apresentou-se mais estável termodinamicamente que as amostras inoculadas com os outros dois inoculantes, pois ele levou a uma variação da energia livre de Gibbs mais negativa e portanto mais favorável a formação de núcleos com raio crítico (rc) maiores, o que permitirá uma solidificação com nucleação heterogênea. Todavia o respectivo inoculante também foi mais eficiente na formação de uma microestrutura mais estável, com maiores quantidades de células eutéticas e vida útil do inserto mais longa quando usinado.

Mining operations have made tremendous strides in improving the safety of blasting as shown by the significant and continual decrease in fatalities and serious injuries. Advances in blasting technology and blasting practices have played a significant role in reducing fatalities and injuries. However, even with the decline of fatalities and injuries blast area security continues to be by far the leading factor in blasting accidents. Even though there continues to be an increase in the use of industrial explosives and blasting agents in the U.S.A., the decline in fatalities and injuries from blasting accidents has persisted.

"Mineralogical characterization and metallurgical extraction of silver is challenging due to its complex mineralogy and chemistry. Over 200 Ag-bearing minerals have been identified and a silver-rich ore body would typically contain 5 to 10 different silver minerals. Silver can occur not only as discrete microscopic (visible) silver minerals but also as submicroscopic (invisible) silver in other minerals. During processing, silver may form passivation compounds such as silver hydroxide, silver sulphide, jarosite-like silver sulphate, silver halide or silver cyanide precipitate, all of which may negatively impact on silver extraction. Knowing the deportment of silver in the ore and its metallurgical products is important in flowsheet design and plant optimization. This paper begins with the classification of silver ores and minerals and a review of processing techniques, and focuses on the major mineralogical factors to explain why and how these factors affect silver extraction. Case studies are provided to demonstrate the application of silver process mineralogy in flowsheet design and plant optimization.INTRODUCTIONSilver was known to and utilized by mankind since ancient time. Actually, it was one of the earliest metals discovered and utilized by mankind after gold and copper.Silver is the whitest metallic element. It is rare, strong, corrosion resistant, and unaffected by moisture, vegetable acids, or alkalis. Silver is also resonant, moldable, malleable, and possesses the highest thermal and electric conductivity of any substance. The chemical symbol for silver is Ag, from the Latin argentum, which means white and shining. Although silver does not react with many chemicals, it does react with sulfur, which is always present in air at trace amounts. The reaction causes silver to tarnish, and consequently it must be polished periodically to retain its luster.Silver possesses many special physical characteristics and qualities that make it useful to a variety of industries. The photography industry is the biggest user of silver compounds. Silver forms the most light-sensitive halide salts, which are essential to developing highquality photographic prints. Silver also has the highest electrical conductivity per unit volume of any metal, including copper, so it is used extensively in electronics."

The portal, which is the near-horizontal, surface point of entry to an underground excavation, can often be an exceedingly difficult area in terms of ground control. Surface and subsurface failures at portals, as discerned during a study involving over 300 case histories, are unfortunately, common. To aid in the engineering evaluation of portals, the Geomechanics Classification System was appended with discontinuity orientation assessment values and support/excavation guidelines. Also, a design model utilizing RMR predicted rock loads in conjunction with half-dome theory is proposed for the most common type of portal failure. Other pertinent comments and recommendations relating to portal stability are included.
