"PRACTICAL SAMPLING TECHNIQUESIt is important to achieve reliability when sampling heterogeneous materials where there is a difference in composition, and non random distribution of the constituent particles. Throughout the design, construction and installation of sampling systems it must be borne in mind that the sampling point must be capable of:-allowing each particle in the stream an equal opportunity to be sampled.-accepting and collecting as large a volume or mass of material as necessary to satisfy the requirements of particle counting statistics.-establishing a sampling plan so that the sample is representative of the whole to a defined standard of accuracy.Design ConsiderationsFactors that may influence the design of the sample point include:-the mass, or volume flow rate of the material being sampled-the size and shape of the material or flowing stream-the physical condition of the material being sampled (i.e. temperature, wetness, size consist, density).-the chemical composition of the material being sampled -the location of the sample point and the space available for installation, extraction, reduction where necessary, secondary sampling, and return of the sample rejects downstream.-whether the process to be sampled is in an existing plant or one yet to be designed and built.-ease of access for servicing and maintaining the equipment.-whether the sampled material must be collected continuously or intermittently.-whether an existing sampling method is likely to be adequate or whether a new technique has to be developed."

Texas is a major producer of industrial mineral resources required by the state’s ever-growing population that now exceeds 28 million. Texas typically ranks in the top three states for the value of non-fuel mineral production with a total value of $5.2 billion in 2017, accounting for 6.9% of the total US mineral value. Almost 90% of current Texas industrial mineral value comes from the production of cement, crushed stone, industrial sand, and construction sand and gravel. Construction material consumption is focused in the 25 metropolitan areas of the state with populations of > 100,000 residents. Industrial mineral consumption is dominated by the four most populous regions of the state—Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio-New Braunfels, and Austin-Round Rock—with an aggregate population of more than 18 million. More than 11,000 employees work in Texas mining and processing operations. Texas produces more crushed stone than any other state from more than 200 quarries; a similar number of operations produce sand and gravel. Specialty industrial sand production for use as proppants in hydraulic fracturing for enhanced petroleum production serves as an excellent example of how developments in one industry sector can markedly affect another industry; the production of industrial sand in Texas has markedly increased over the past decade, reaching $1.3 billion in 2014. With Texas’ population projected to reach 50 million by 2050, continuing in-state development and production of industrial minerals will be required to supply its residential, commercial, and industrial users. Favorable geology and economic factors provide opportunities for identification and development of new industrial mineral production sites.

A number of people have expressed concern, understandably, that if mining operations take place in the Coromandel, the flows of mineralised ground water which exist will be intercepted. This water in many cases contains toxic metals including mercury, arsenic and lead and it is thought that if this water is allowed to enter streams or the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, it could endanger natural marine life and possibly established fisheries. This paper seeks to explain in simple terms the geology and the process of deposition of the various mineral deposits in the ground, the chemistry of the reactions between these minerals and the rain water falling on the ground, the hydrology and behaviour of this mineralised groundwater as it moves through the ground until it eventually enters the sea.

The exclusion of coal fly ash from regulation as a hazardous waste has led to increased interest in returning ash to the coalfields for co-disposal. A multi-year column study used coal refuse with high potential acidity (4% total-S), and two alkaline ashes in various bulk-blends. The unamended refuse acidified rapidly, producing acidic (pH 1.7) leachates, high in dissolved metals. Treatments blended with sufficiently high amounts (20 to 33%) of alkaline ash produced alkaline (pH >8.4) leachates with low metal levels, while lower ash blending rates acidified over time to produce metalliferous leachates. Examination of solid materials indicated that pyrite oxidation was occurring to some extent in all treatments. A regression equation (r2 = 0.95) was developed to estimate time to net acid release for mixtures of these materials. Ash alkalinity and refuse potential acidity must be balanced to insure water quality for co-disposal environments, or the ash materials should be isolated away from acidic drainage waters.

A recent increase in energy demand has resulted in the rapid growth of coal consumption in the People?s Republic of China (PRC), which is the largest coal producer and consumer in the world. Reportedly, the safety issues in Chinese coal mines have been improving, but the number of fatalities and serious injuries continues to be alarmingly high. The number of fatalities from catastrophic accidents have prompted researchers to review the Chinese mine safety situation and to look for potential solutions. Marshall Miller & Associates, Inc. (MM&A), along with various collaborators, has investigated these issues as part of its work on various projects in the PRC and has discussed the concerns with relevant Chinese officials. Preliminary investigations by MM&A of coal mine accidents during 2001?2006 in the PRC indicate that 65%-78% of the total fatalities were the result of gas explosions and roof falls in underground mines. Even though the drainage of methane has been practiced for decades, current practices do not always produce satisfactory results due to technical constraints and equipment limitations. Based on prior experience of in-seam degasification at the Daning Coal Mine located in Shanxi province, MM&A believes that in-seam directional drilling technology can be a viable solution to degas the low-permeability Chinese coal deposits. This paper 1) reviews current Chinese coal mine safety conditions, 2) analyzes the advantages/disadvantages of current degasification practices in China, and 3) presents the pre-mining degasification practices for the longwall panel at the Daning Coal Mine.

O ar soprado é uma das principais utilidades responsáveis pelo processo de transformação do minério de ferro em gusa no Auto Forno. Para que ocorra o processo de redução o ar soprado é superaquecido nos regeneradores dos autos fornos a uma temperatura de 1.300°C. Este energético é fornecido na CSN-UPV pelos turbos sopradores da Central Termoelétrica nº 2 (CTE#2), área dos Motos Sopradores 1 e 2 e os turbos sopradores n°1 e 3 da CTE#1 que operam com a velocidade reduzida 24 horas soprando para atmosfera e consumindo vapor de 30Bar. Devido à obsolescência do sistema de ar soprado da CTE#1, alto custo de operação e risco para a segurança operacional, este trabalho apresenta o estudo do problema em questão, a metodologia utilizada para desativação do ar soprado da CTE-1 e a redução de custo.

New sedimentological and biostratigraphic data indicate that the Leron Formation in the Markham Suture Zone, Papua New Guinea (PNG) represented Pleist- ocene alluvial fan-delta deposition in shallow marine to lacustrine environments. The distribution of sedimentary regimes in the Leron Formation indicates that during collision zone evolution, various tectono-sedimentary regimes do not always track the movement of the triple-junction systematically as idealized by Crook's (1989a) model. The migration of various tectono-sedimentary regimes are also controlled and influenced by the effects of second-order geometric features of the convergent margins. Leron Formation in the Markham Valley represents late to post-collisional marine to fluvial molasse. Foraminifera indicate that the collision and concomitant suturing of the Markham valley occurred after 1.32Ma.

A study was carried out to evaluate various batch flotation models for the recovery of minerals in a UG2 platinum ore. The major minerals in a UG2ore can be grouped as platinum group minerals, chromite, and siliceous gangue. This study also examined the entrainment of minerals during flotation. The models were ranked using statistical methods and an analysis of model-fit residuals. Entrainment parameters obtained from model fitting were evaluated for logic using a simple mineral-to-water ratio versus time plot. The foremost conclusion from the study was the importance of entrainment modelling. The measurement of water recovery increased the size of the data-set, and the inclusion of a simple entrainment model was statistically significant. The overall fit to the data was improved, and the entrainment model provided logical information on the recovery of gangue minerals that were not considered to be floatable.

El presente texto describe la exploración, geología, controles estructurales, mineralización y los tipos de alteración hidrotermal del yacimiento minero Cuajone, situado al sur de la Cordillera Occidental de los Andes y en el flanco Andino de Moquegua. En 1937, se inicia su exploración a través de una campaña exploratorla de la empresa Cerro de Pasco, donde se determina la zona como un proyecto potencial de cobre porfirítico de baja ley. Posteriormente en 1942, se inicia la primera campaña de perforación diamantina exploratoria y en 1969, se inicia la etapa de construcción y desbroce de material para preparar la mina. De otro lado, se ha desarrollado un modelo de la evolución del yacimiento desde las rocas preminerales del Grupo Toquepala, de las cuales la andesita basáltica fue una gran receptora de la mineralización de cobre originada por la intrusión de un primer pulso de latita porfirítica.

This chapter deals with the concepts ofshock waves aud detonation waves together, because a detonation wave is really a shock wave, supported by the explosive reaction that the shock wave ignites and propagates as it travels through the explosive material. In the context of rock blasting, furthermore, there is justification for treating shock waves and detonation waves together, because the mechanical effect of the detonation in an explosive in a drillhole in rock is propagated and its effects are spread throughout the surrounding rock by means of a shock wave The overall performance of an explosive in rock blasting or any other application is of course dependent on how much thermal energy is released in the chemical reaction that occurs when the material detonates, and on how much useful mrc!~amcal work the reaction products can do as they expand. A major portion of this chapter deals with the prediction and measurement of explosive performance, a subject which is now still in a process of rapid development.

Underground stone mining represents an emerging sector for the U.S. mining industry. As this expansion takes mines under deeper cover and as more efficient mining methods are utilized, adequate stone pillar design methods will become more important. It is the purpose of this paper to examine current design practices and to discuss issues for safe mine layouts so that a rational first approach towards balancing the demands for increased production can be weighed against increased risk to worker safety from rib instabilities and pillar failures. Seventy-two stone mine pillar designs were examined. Pillars with width-to- height ratios below 1.5 and subjected to excessive stress levels appear more likely to fail. When width-to- height ratios fall below 1 .0, defects in the pillars, such as through-going discontinuities, can have a significant influence on stability. Discontinuity persistence, dip, material properties, and orientation are important factors controlling pillar strength. The influence of discontinuity dip, a characteristic easily identified in the field, was examined so that its presence could be accounted for in developing generalized guidelines for pillar design.

"El trabajo refiere algunos aspectos del depósito de estaño en el yacimiento de Condiriquiña (Puno), como en zonas de Apurimac, Lima, Pasco, Ancash, Cajamarca del Perú. Se conoce que los principales depósitos de estaño provienen de los ramales cordilleranos de Bolivia, abarcando una serie de yacimientos. En vista de una posterior demanda del producto, fue necesario que el Perú inicie una exploración de este metal en territorios adyacentes a Bolivia. Sin embargo, las exploraciones no se concretaron más que a las inmrediaciones del lago Titicaca. Posteriormente se descubrió minerales de estaño en diversas partes de nuestro territorio,aunque que ningún depósito explorado tenga un resultado de valor económico-industrial considerable. El aspecto geoquímico del estaño no tiene relaciones con el fierro, cromo, silicio, careciendo de estaño en los depósitos líquidos magmáticos y en las rocas ígneas de naturaleza básica. Durante los procesos metalogenéticos el estaño se concentra y constituye un elemento característico de la cristalización residual; presentándose tanto en el alcance neumatolítico ácidocomo en el hidrotermal. En consecuencia, los depósitos de estaño son de origen neumatólítico, cuyas masas y filones de catiserita están asociados con un batolito de granito, de edad oligocénico. Así, las rocas encajonantes consisten en pizarras y cuarcitas de Ordovicito, se transforman en rocas greisen o ígneas. Finalmente, los depósitos estanníferos se clasifican según sus alcances genéticos en depósitos supergenos e hipogenos, los cuales se dividen en depósitos pegmatítico, neumalotílicos, de transición neumatolíticos-hidrotermales y los depósitos hidrotermales."

"The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. L’Échancrure de Cobalt est un large domaine de roches sédimentaires clastiques d’âge Paléoprotérozoïque qui reposent en discordance sur la ceinture de roches vertes d’Abitibi d’âge Archéen. La Diabase de Nipissing, mise en place vers 2219 Ma et qui constitue un réseau de sills et de dykes d’importance régionale, est présente dans l’ensemble de l’échancrure et constitue la roche-hôte principale des systèmes de veines aurifères-polymétalliques de la propriété Merico-Ethel, près de la bordure nord-est de l’Échancrure de Cobalt. Ces veines à minéralisation aurifère et polymétallique constituent un système de veines de calcite-quartz sécantes d’orientation principalement est-ouest et à pendage fort qui se sont formées peu de temps après la cristallisation de la Diabase de Nipissing (à ~15 Ma près, d’après les âges Pb-Pb). La minéralogie de la minéralisation est complexe; elle consiste typiquement en sulfures, en arséniures, en métaux natifs (or et argent) et en hématite spéculaire, préférentiellement concentrés à l’interface entre les silicates et la gangue de calcite. La séquence de déposition simplifiée des minéraux dans les veines est : (1) «Stade précoce» pyrite ± chalcopyrite encaissés dans une gangue de quartz ± chlorite; (2) "Stade principal" sulfures polymétalliques (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U), arséniures, et métaux natifs dans une gangue de calcite; et (3) "Stade tardif" calcite massive ± galène. L’altération pénétrative de la Diabase de Nipissing est confinée à des halos étroits (<5 cm) présentant des assemblages marquées par la présence de calcite-chlorite-épidote, tandis qu’un faible halo d’altération en hématite spéculaire, calcite et en allanite-épidote est noté dans les roches sédimentaires environnantes. De par leur âge, leur géologie, leur minéralogie leur paragenèse et leur morphologie, les systèmes de veines aurifères de Merico-Ethel ressemblent beaucoup aux gîtes filoniens d’argent-sulfoarséniures des camps miniers historiques de Cobalt et de Gowganda. According to the U.S Department of Energy (DOE), mineral processing activities including comminution (size reduction) uses 4% of the world electrical energy consumption. Such numbers reinforce the need to invest in energy savings initiatives in order to produce more using less. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN MINING OPERATIONS In addition, DOE, in its Mining Industry Energy Bandwidth Study, has identified huge potential for energy savings for the coal, metals and mineral industries. Even knowing the overall causes of energy waste and some potential tools for remediation, mining companies may struggle to apply such tools and get the desired results due to the following reasons: ? Limited staff ? Lack of accurate economic and investment analysis to justify energy savings projects ? Lack of knowledge to identify low or no-cost savings opportunities ? Internal competition for resources According to the workforce and talent management experts, the Talent Strategy Advisors, the demand for mining engineers is expected to exceed supply by 30% by 2013. Mining personnel are likely to be burdened with increasing and varied workloads with limited training. This will result in the need for automated and simple tools to support energy efficiency activities. Mining engineers will simply not have the time and resources to create such tools, collect and analyze the data to make decisions, and track results.

This study evaluated spinal loads associated with lifting and hanging heavy mining cable in a variety of postures. This electrical cable can weigh up to 10 kg per metre and is often lifted in restricted spaces in underground coal mines. Seven male subjects performed eight cable lifting and hanging tasks, while trunk kinematic data and trunk muscle electromyograms (EMGs) were obtained. The eight tasks were combinations of four postures (standing, stooping kneeling on one knee, or kneeling on both knees) and two levels of cable load (0 N or 100 N load added to the existing cable weight). An EMG-assisted model was used to calculate forces and moments acting on the lumbar spine. A two-way split-plot ANOVA showed that increased load (p<0.05) and changes in lifting posture (p<0.05) independently affected trunk muscle recruitment and spinal loading. The increase in cable load resulted in higher EMG activity of all trunk muscles and increased axial and lateral bending moments on the spine (p < 0.05). Changes in posture caused more selective adjustments in muscle recruitment and affected the sagittal plane moment (p < 0.05). Despite the more selective nature of trunk EMG changes due to posture, the magnitude of changes in spinal loading was often quite dramatic. However, average compression values exceeded 3400 N for all cable lifting tasks.

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. El presente estudio describe el método de empleo para la determinación del espaciamiento óptimo de muestreo en la Mina Casapalca. La técnica comprende cuatro pasos: recolección y preparación de datos, procesamiento electrónico de datos, análisis de los resultados y la verificación de las conclusiones. Dentro de las conclusiones, se considera que los métodos estadísticos son los más útiles en la solución de los problemas de la industria minera , puesto que cualquier dato numérico pueden ser convertido a un número más simple a través de la computadora.
