Bauxite residue (red mud) is an alkaline waste derived from the industrial process for extraction of alumina from bauxite ore. Some bauxite residues contain considerable concentrations of critical metals, for example, rare earth elements. Lithium in red mud was also reported as a potential resource. In the current study, a Li-rich red mud was leached using acetic acid to investigate the leaching behavior of lithium followed by neutralizing with hydrochloric or oxalic acid. By neutralizing red mud using diluted hydrochloric acid (0.01 mol/L), 58.04–60.27% of lithium was leached using 25% acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min. In the meantime, more than 95% of sodium and 85% of calcium were also dissolved in the leachate solution. While oxalic acid (0.5 mol/L) was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lithium performed lower leaching efficiencies (42.41–46.88%) in comparison of using of hydrochloric acid–neutralized red mud. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the condition. In this study, 25% (v/v) of acetic acid, at 85 °C for 60 min, was demonstrated as optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid–neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results would be useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

Cortez Gold Mines completed a feasibility study for a new openpit gold mine in north central Nevada. The production schedule calls for a peak in material movement. This schedule is based on current operational efficiencies and equipment parameters observed at the company’s existing openpit operation. To mitigate risks of over/under predicting production, simulation modeling was used to validate the loading and haulage requirements during the peak production period. The advantage of simulation is the ability to provide a realistic model of a mining operation based on scheduled and unscheduled random events during the period under analysis.

Heavy mineral deposits have been known from Liberia since the1950s from both river and beach placers. The heavy mineral content of beach sands ranges between 28?62% and the suite includes ilmenite, rutile, zircon and magnetite. These occur together with kyanite, sillimanite, staurolite and garnet. The average ilmenite content is 82% with minor zircon (11%), rutile (6%) and monazite (1%). The ilmenite is, however, of poor quality with haematite intergrowths and a titanium content ranging from10?42.4% (average ±25% TiO2). The amounts of rutile and zircon, while of suitable quality, have also previously been deemed too low for economic exploitation.

Laser coatings are used for a wide variety of applications. TiB2/Ni intermetallic matrix composite coatings were fabricated on Al-substrate by a high power Rofin Sinar Nd: YAG solid-state laser. The characterization of the coatings was carried out by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical study of the laser coatings in 3.65 per cent NaCl at room temperature revealed that with very high weight proportion of nickel the corrosion resistance of the coatings deteriorated due the presence of AlB10 phase. 50 wt per cent TiB2+50 wt per cent Ni laser coatings exhibited the highest corrosion resistance in test solution. It is difficult to remove cadmium from raw indium using only electrolytic refining because their standard potentials are similar. In this paper, physical and chemical methods were used to remove Cd from raw indium. Indium metal is vacuum refined for two hours at 400°C with a vacuum pressure of 20 Pa. In this process, 99.70% of the Cd can be removed. The removal rate of Cd reaches 90% to 95% when indium is further smelted for 10 minutes in a 20% glycerin solution of KI and I2 at 180°C. When pre-indium is electrolytic refined in an In2(SO4)3-H2SO4 system, in which the indium content is 80 to 100 g/L, the pH is 2.0-3.0 and the current density is 80 to 100 A/m2, the contents of the impurities decrease and the purity of the indium product reaches 99.99%.

"Acid regeneration is a very important process step in each acid leach circuit. It is required to recover dissolved metals and HCl from spent leaching acid. Andritz Metals presents its recently commissioned spray roast pilot plant. The facility is now available for testing and demonstrating acid recovery or metal oxide production which is a requirement in several flow sheets under development for the mining and specialized oxides industries. Results from pilot test campaigns are reported here. We are currently focusing on a nickel ore leaching process, which requires both a feasible iron control and acid regeneration step. In addition, we disclose the results of a magnesium ore and aluminium recycling test campaign conducted in our pilot plant facility.INTRODUCTION Hydrochloric acid regeneration is widely used in the steel industry to regenerate spent pickle liquors into hydrochloric acid at a typical concentration of 18 wt.%. Andritz Metals (formerly known as Ruthner) has built more than 200 acid regeneration plants worldwide (Andritz Metals brochure). As technology leaders Andritz also has vast experience with specialty metal oxide plants, producing metal oxides such as aluminium oxide (Al2O3), magnesium oxide (MgO), nickel oxide (NiO), cobalt oxide (Co3O4) and mixed oxides from metal chloride solutions (Baerhold F., Lebl A., Starcevic J., 2006), (Jedlicka, H., n.d.), (Ruthner M.J., Krischner H., 1973), (Ruthner Ind. Planungs AG, 1967). Hydrochloric acid leach circuits have been developed and proven in the industry for many years. Examples of industrial applications are: synthetic rutile production (TiO2) (Walpole E.A., Winter J.D., 2002), Quebec Iron and Titanium’s UGS process (Patoine M.-C., De Mori A., Borowiec K., Coscia C., 2002), magnesium and potassium production (Priemer H., 1973) and Goro Nickel (Vahed A., Colton D.F., Duterque J.P., Karner W., Baerhold F., 2004), (Taylor A., 2013). One of the critical process steps in developing a hydrometallurgical process is acid regeneration, as it is an economic requirement to recover both the dissolved metals and acid (commonly HCl) from the spent leaching solution."

Synthesis of alumina-mullite-silicon carbide composite (Al2O3-Al6Si2O13-SiCw) was obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of kaolin and two different silica sources. The carbothermal reduction was carried out in a horizontal tube furnace under flow of argon gas. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina, mullite and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of adding two different silica sources of rice husk ash and silica powder to the mixture of kaolin and activated carbon were investigated. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3- Al6Si2O13-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having whisker morphology.

Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of £5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.

"Alkali/alumina and MgO/alumina molar ratio plots graphically portray both chemical and mineralogical changes accompanying potassic, phyllic, argillic, chloritic, and alunitic alteration of quartz monzonites and granodiorites hosting porphyry (as well as lode and greisen) ore deposits. The molar ratio plots can be used to identify different types of alteration. In most cases, the identification based on molar ratios coincides with petrographic data. In those instances where the molar ratio and petrographic identifications do not agree, the mineralogy might need to be re-examined. Hydrothermal alteration studies using trace elements could benefit from the application of complementary alkali/alumina molar ratio plots.Le diagramme des rapports molaires alkali/alumine et MgO/alumine illustre clairement les changements chimiques et minéralogiques qui accompagnent les altérations potassique, phyllique, argillique, chloritique, and alunitique des monzonites à quartz et des granodiorites encaissant les gîtes de type porphyrique, ainsi que des veines et des greisens qui leur sont associés. Coking coals are very much in demand on a world wide basis, particularly the higher rank coking coals, which form an important part of many coking blends and which represent the smallest portion of the world'scoking coal reserves. Conventional coke oven plants, using these coals, will predominate at least until the next century.Blending schemes for conventional coking require definition of the basic properties of coals so that the factors influencing the carbonization behaviour may be assessed. Several concepts, which are relatively simple, ate available to help promote a better understanding of the bask factors controlling -coke strength and are also useful in suggesting possible lines to follow in the blending of coals for coking.The interpretation of carbonization behaviour and coke structure in terms of petrographically defined coal rank and type provide a basis for planning and exploitation of coal Teserves. The optimum parameters for coking are suggested as follows.1. Type- Vitrinite content (% m.m.f. by volume) 55 ± 5%2. Rank- Mean maximum reflectance of vitrinite 1.30 ± O.10% Carbon content of vitrinite (% d.m.m.f.) 87·5 ± 1·0%The value of a coal should be assessed in relation to all its possible uses in blends. This is a more realistic and productive approach, as compared with considering coals only in relation to the results of blending with"good" coking coals. Blending schemes have been outlined to assist in the assessment of the blend potential of coals of all ranks and types.Reserves of higher rank coking coals in N.S.W. are very limited and should be conserved by blending with the low rank coking coals, of which there are large reserves.Examination of blending theories in relation to N.S.W. coals suggest that blends in the broad categories of minimal downgrading of the higher rank N.S.W. cok...

Experiments conducted at Tahmoor Colliery, Sydney Basin, have demonstrated the variability in chemical and isotopic composition of seam gases issuing from boreholes in the Bulli seam and desorbing from lump coal from the same source.From this work it appears that an immediate preferential release of methane accompanies the physical disturbance of the coal seam by penetration with development or drilling or by detachment. In addition, both early released methane and carbon dioxide are depleted in 13C relative to later desorbed gases, therefore the analyses of gas samples taken after such events may not reflect the true bulk composition of the undisturbed seam gas in situ. A method for overcoming this problem by taking gas samples at depth in the "steady state" is proposed.

Underground mining of stone in the US is increasing, as is the depth of overburden above the mines. Data gathered from mine visits, maps, discussion with operators and numerical simulation have been used to investigate pillar design and recommend safe practice. Many pillars have slender shapes with relatively large adjacent mine openings: width-to-height ratios range from 0.54 to 3.13 and extraction ratios from 0.56 to 0.91. The pillar material is often very strong and average overburden only 80 m, but occasional failure due to excessive local stress has occurred where pillar size had been unintentionally reduced, overburdens were greater than 200 m, width-to-height ratios were less than 1.25 or extraction ratios were greater than 0.83. Pillars with width-to-height ratios of less than 1.5 appear more likely to fail under excessive stress. When width-to-height ratios fall below 1.0, defects such as through-running discontinuities can have a significant influence on stability. Dip, orientation and material properties are also important

Paper presented at the conference: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, UK, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume, 20pp., 31 refs. Estimates of coal tonnage on UK open cast mining sites often vary from the recoverable tonnage. This is because the estimates depend on the geological variability of the coal measures. Geological parameters, such as thickness, quality and disturbance of the seam, have a direct control upon this variance. Risk analysis techniques have been applied using commercially available software to combine each parameter's variability into a cumulative variance, resulting in a tonnage distribution. Sensitivity modelling has also been used to identify the geological parameters which have the largest influence on the variance of the simulated tonnage distribution. An understanding of the relationship between the tonnage and geological variability has helped to focus exploration more efficiently. A cost to risk relationship can now be monitored, helping management to avoid negative consequences on site

"Indusmin's history dates back to 1937 when they developed the Blue Mountain Nepheline Syenite deposit at Nephton, Ontario, and began supplying material for the glass, fiberglass, paint, ceramics and rubber industries.Since then, as a subsidiary of Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Indusmin has expanded the Nephton operation, diversified into the aggregate quarries for the construction industries, with operations at Acton and Halton, Ontario, established silica plants at St. Canut, Quebec and Midland, Ontario, to supply the glass, carbide, ceramics, cleanser and concrete products industries, and the purchase of a foundry, Fahramet Limited, Orillia, Ontario, supplying steel and alloy castings to the mining, construction cement and petrochemical industries.Indusmin also has a Technical Resource Centre and Head Office facilities in Toronto.As this paper deals with Indusmin's experience with dust abatement, and although dust control is a concern at the Nephton, St. Canut and Orillia plants, we will be confining this paper to the experience gained at the Badgeley Quarry and Midland plant of the Ontario Silica Operation."

Upgrading of a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample provided by Kingstream Steel Ltd was investigated using low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse flotation. The ore contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina, with the main minerals in the ore being amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent) and quartz (14 per cent). The concentrate obtained after low intensity magnetic separation contained 66.6 per cent iron and 6.34 per cent silica with an iron recovery of 72 per cent. This concentrate was further treated by reverse flotation to increase the iron content and reduce the silica content to meet the requirements for direct reduction iron (DRI) feed grade.

El Gabinete Metalúrgico del cuerpo de Ingenieros de Minas analizó un mineral argentífero para encontrar el procedimiento más adecuado para la extracción del oro y plata contenidos. Dicho estudio reveló que para tener una mayor cantidad de valores se requiere una molienda de alta fineza. A esto se suman las pruebas de flotación, donde se encontró una mayor relación de concentración en plata y plomo, aunque la extraccíon de plata seguía siendo deficiente. Es a partir de las pruebas de cianuración de los relaves, que se consiguió mejor concentración combinada tanto de plata y oro, obteníendose posteriormente mejores resultados.

A sulphide ion selective electrode (ISE) is suitable for control of sodium sulphide additions in flotation because it has a rapid response to changeS in S2- concentrations, can indicate -low concentrations at differentpH values, suffers from few interferences, and is robust enou'gh to use in a pulp. Three sulphidization techniques were studied using the lSE electrode for measurement and/or control of S2- levels. Metallurgy was assessedfrom concentrate grades and copper recovery.With slug additions of sodium sulphide, sulphidizing conditions were poorly defined and reproducibility tended to be poor. Although acceptable metallurgy could be achieved by multiple additions, sodium sulphide consumption was high.Controlled potential sulphidization readily gave good metallurgy. The optimum potential of the lSE for sulphidizing was about -500 mV versus SCE, but depended on sulphidization and flotation times; suitable times were3 and 5 min respectively for three to five stages. Application of this technique to previously untested ores gave good metallurgy in a first test in spite of variation by a factor of three in the sodium sulphide requirements ofthe ores.Simultaneous sulphidization and flotation was satisfactory when conducted at an lSE potential of -450 mV versus SCE. Mixed cha!copyrite-oxide copper ores responded satisfactorily.Besides optimizing sulphidization conditions it is also necessary to optimize xanthate additions (e.g. by measuring xanthate residuals).

Paper presented at the Drillex '90 conference held in London, 5 April 1990. Two drilling techniques are employed - guided longhole drilling and reverse circulation coring - for underground longhole exploration of the coal reserves and the fault structures that affect them. These are complementary to, or replacements for, surface boreholes, underground development drivages and seismic techniques. The developments of the drilling techniques and some case histories are presented in detail.
