This article outlines various projects implemented at Rand Refinery to reduce effluent generation and freshwater consumption. The refinery generates about 2800 m³ of effluent annually and has initiated projects such as granulation water recycle and silver leach optimisation to address these issues. The granulation water recycle project has successfully reduced effluent volumes, while the silver leach optimisation has further decreased effluent by implementing stoichiometric addition of HCl and NaClO3. The vibratory shear enhanced processing (VSEP) trial showed promising results for gold recovery from wastewater, though further trials are recommended. The water savings of the effluent reduction projects are monitored by measuring the amount of effluent pumped to service yard effluent storage facilities with the use of flow meters connected on SCADA. Since the effluent reduction initiative of granulation effluent recycle in FY23, the effluent reduced to 2676 m³. In FY24, the stoichiometric addition of HCl and NaClO3 was implemented in the silver leach process, further reducing the effluent to 2083 m³.

The use of drilling rigs to increasingly mechanize stope drilling has been acknowledged as important for the S.A. mining industry in it ís efforts to tackle the challenges of low productivity, AIDS and an ageing driller workforce. The spin-offs of increased safety, cost-effectiveness and better mining performance provide advantages to all?from the driller to the shareholder. However, implementation or product rollout has varied from outright success to dismal failure. A study of various cases by Novatek and Anglogold TDS showed clear reasons for these differences. Whereas the successes were characterized by clear objectives, accountability, user buy-in, a commitment to make the technology work and no-nonsense reporting, these were typically absent in failed implementations. The attitude at unsuccessful mines was to ?trial? the equipment?even subconsciously, a ?trial? is a test where failure becomes an acceptable outcome. During the study it became clear that mining management are not adequately trained to manage the often-tricky rollout process. They are often also not empowered or clearly mandated to deal with the organizational, human and technical issues that must dovetail to create a success. The output of the study was to develop a basic rollout process that could be used to formally manage the implementation of new drilling technology. Creating an alignment between the mine, workforce and supplier promotes a win-win situation that will not otherwise spontaneously arise.

A program ?SlagVis? has been developed to simulate the liquidus temperature, phase compositions and viscosities of ZnO-CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-?FeO? slag, such as Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) slag and lead blast furnace slag, combined with F*A*C*T slag database and the mathematical model of slag viscosities based on a modified Urbain formalism. The modeling results have been validated by a number of measurements. The effects of slag compositions on viscosities of ISF slag and lead blast furnace slag have been simulated and discussed.

Persons interested in th_e study of petroleum and allied substances have long felt the need of a bibliographic index to the literature. This bibliography, which is intended to be the first elf a yearly series, has been compiled by the petroleum division of the Bureau of Mines with a view to satisfying this need. The references include only the more noteworthy writings that appeared during the year 191.5 in both ·the United States and foreign countries. Only patents plainly applicable to the industries in point have been included, although, of course, a close scrutiny of the great volume of patent literature might reveal many other patents of possible value. The references are arranged according to the subject classification on pages 3 to 11. This classification, which is to be followed in the succeeding bibliographies of this series, is offered as a guide for further study and classification of the pertinent literature.

"Since the publication of empirical cyclone models by Lynch and Rao in 1975 and by Plitt in 1976, the technical literature on this subject has consisted primarily of reports of applications, with only a few articles discussing basic modifications or enhancements in model form. In fact, most of the modelling eff ort in this period has been concerned with theoretical models based on the hydrodynamics of multiphase flow. (Preliminary resutls have been encouraging, however, it will be some time before this approach reaches the practical application stage.) This paper presents a review of empirical cyclone modelling technology, with an emphasis on developments since the mid 1970s. The topics addressed include homogeneous and heterogeneous ores, parameter estimation techniques, parameter confidence intervals, and the introduction of a new conceptual model of cyclone operation.IntroductionSince their first reported application in the mineral industry by Driessen (1939), cyclones have become a common unit operation in all of the process industries. The widespread use of the cyclone stems from its relative low cost and its versatility. It can be employed to carry out liquid-liquid, solid-liquid and solid-solid separations. It is the area of solid-solid separation which is of greatest interest to a mineral processing engineer. Historically, this area was divided into two application categories: (I) Separation according to density, the cyclone washer, and, (2) Classification according to particle size, the cyclone ciassifier. (When water is the carrier fluid, the cyclone is more often called the hydrocyclone. For the purposes of this paper the two names are used interchangeably). Classification is the principal application in mineral processing circuit s. Within this category, the cyclone is most commonly employed to provide some positive control over the size distribution of product from a grinding circuit. Other uses include sand-slime separation prior to froth flotation and mill tailings treatment, either for dam construction or in backfill preparation."

DESPITE the intense preoccupation of most of those members connected with the mining, concentration, and reduction of iron ores, the luncheon and subsequent technical session of the Eastern Magnetite Committee were exceedingly well attended. Many of the older faces were absent, but new ones took their places. More than sixty, all told, took in the technical session. Chairman Crockett opened the session by calling upon Meredith E. Johnson, whose paper, with its accompanying graph, was in reality a comprehensive historical review of iron mining from colonial days to the end of 1941. with some notes on current expansion which indicates that New Jersey is destined to become a still more important. factor in the production of magnetite ores.

At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

Underground 802.11 wireless communications has become widely adopted for automation and communication purposes but maximizing the wireless signal presents many obstacles given the harsh environment as well as the presence of materials and conditions that can reduce signal propagation. Changes in elevations and curvatures in ramp to drift transitions also affect the wireless signal. Based on the requirements of wireless applications such as voice, data, or location tracking, the wireless site survey is the key tool for measuring and predicting signal strength and signal-to-noise ratio. These readings help determine the maximum distance between access points in order to sustain an overlapping wireless signal where required. This paper describes the methodology and tools used for measuring 802.11 wireless signal strength in an underground mine environment in Northern Ontario. The physical characteristics of the mine and the actual recorded wireless signal data will be presented in order for the audience to gain an understanding of the factors that affect signal throughput. Antenna selection used for the site survey will also be discussed as it played a key role in propagating the wireless signal.

"The Subtropolis room-and-pillar mine extracts the Vanport Limestone (Allegheny Formation, Pennsylvanian System) near Petersburg, Ohio. Strata instability problems associated with excessive concentrations of lateral stress caused the mine operator to implement a change in layout design. This mining method has been identified as a stress control layout, which has been used by other underground stone mines in the past with varying degrees of success. Practical experience has shown that entry headings advance in the direction of the principal lateral stress, producing lower stress concentrations with better mining conditions. It is important to minimize stress concentrations along the mining front, so an arrow-shaped advance is recommended. This technique advances more developments (headings) in a “good” direction and reduces developments (crosscuts) in a “bad” direction. As is expected, the stress control layout enhances the potential for shear failures in crosscuts. It is, therefore, important to focus crosscut engineering interventions that either: (a) lower stress concentrations (for example, an arched roof) or (b) enhance strength of the strata containing the shears (for example, rock reinforcement). This study focuses on observing strata conditions on a regular basis and monitoring the response of this strata to changing geologic and mining conditions through 3D Dynamic LiDAR scans.INTRODUCTIONProject AimsThe Subtropolis Mine is extracting the Vanport Limestone in northeastern Ohio. Since the start of mining in 2006, ground conditions have been significantly affected by excessive lateral stress condition. In some other mining districts with this hazard, certain mine layouts have been shown to lessen the potential for unstable ground conditions. The term “lessen” is used to state the realization that stress concentrations are not eliminated but instead occur in less frequency and intensity, and their locations can be projected.The stress-control mine layout, specifically for large-opening room-and-pillar stone mines, naturally evolved at mines suffering from excessive lateral stress problems. These mines will typically experiment with methods to mitigate adverse impacts, thus developing best practices for their conditions. These practices have evolved into a basic framework for the stress control mine layout. For example, Jack Parker was able to write about personal experiences at the White Pine Mine in Michigan (Parker, 1966, 1973). Various researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have studied the effectiveness of stress-control mine layouts over a wide range of geologic conditions (Emery, 1964; Mark and Mucho, 1994; Iannacchione et al., 2003). While the stress control layout design approach has proven successful in many categories, it can be difficult to implement. For example, excessive stress conditions in crosscuts can put the ground control focused intervention at odds with ventilation and haulage constraints, thus limiting optimal crosscut size, shape, and location. Therefore, more information on the effectiveness of this approach is needed."

"En 1953, se habilita la nueva planta de flotación de cobre en Paragsha, donde el funcionamiento de las soleras tipo Lorain y la producción del mineral pirita lograron buenos resultados. Empero las nuevas condiciones de proceso, limitaron su funcionamiento y costo. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del trabajo se basa en la construcción de una solera de mayor rendimiento y menor costo, modificando su diseño al de una honda contínua. El primer juego de este diseño fue instalado en el molino de cobre Nº 1, sin aún obtener el dato final sobre su rendimiento. Posteriormente se consideró la solera AMSCO, dado que el diseño fue más eficiente y el costo final por tonelada fue menor. Sin embargo, se encontró que el contorno del valle era muy cerrado y las bolas N°4 se alojaban de modo ajustado, formando una solera muy gruesa. En consecuencia, se construyó otro diseño denominada ""Solera de onda abierta contínua"", el cual fue instalado en el molino de cobre N°7, donde la capacidad de molienda es igual de óptima y los costos son menores. Así, se pensó que la solera de una sola honda, es mejor que la de onda contínua puesto que este diseño tiene una sola honda en el centro de cada plancha de la solera. Luego, se diseño un tercer diseño, donde el promedio de vida era mejor. Por ello, de los tres diseños a seleccionar -la solera Lorain con 10 hondas, la solera de una honda con 20 hondas y la solera de honda continua de 30 hondas -, la última demostró ser la más eficiente. De otro lado, se probaron otros diseños de honda contínua con distintas aleaciones como el ""Nihard"", cuyo promedio de vida es entre 14 y15 meses aproximadamente, con el tonelaje actual de aproximadamente 270 000. Concluyendo que la experiencia anterior con solerasNihard en molinos a rodillos de 4 pies de diámetro, el impacto es mayor, obteniéndose en quebrantamiento de soleras a 3/4 grosor, pero que pese a esto, resulta ser superior a cualquier otra solera usada actualmente y en eñ que Paragsha esté 100% con soleras de molinos Nihard, a excepción de las rejillas dada su fragilidad. "

The effect of four different second-phase additions on the strength of composite alloys with a common matrix was investigated. The four compositions each consisted of 85 pct by volume of silver with additions of 15 pct of either tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, or nickel. These particular additives were chosen because of their low mutual solid solubilities with silver at room temperature, the alloys consisting essentially of a dispersion strengthened silver matrix in which the second phase is distributed randomly. Test specimens were prepared by a powder metallurgy procedure consisting of ball milling the mixed powders, compacting, and sintering at 920°C for 1 hr in hydrogen. The constituent powders were of CP quality and of particle size between 2 and 10 ?. The compacts were subsequently hot pressed at 1000 psi and 1400° in an Inconel die, coined at room temperature at 60,000 psi and finally annealed and outgassed in vacuum at 800°F. The microstructures of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1, and the microscopically observed porosity grade was A-2 or better as evaluated by ASTM Recommended Practice B 276-54. The properties of the sintered compacts are listed in Table I, and the load-deformation curves in bending are shown in Fig. 2. The samples, of rectangular cross section, were loaded at the center of 58 in. span, and the reported stress was calculated on the basis of linearly elastic behavior in order to allow the comparison of specimens of slightly different dimensions. It is apparent that the tungsten, molybdenum, and tungsten carbide alloys exhibit very similar deformation curves. The moduli of elasticity were determined from the slopes of the stress-deflection curves at small loads. The measured values agree quite well with those calculated by the strength of materials approximation proposed by Paul1 for the elastic constants of mixtures, the calculated values being 15.0, 15.0, 17.4, and 13.4 million psi, respectively, for the tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, and nickel combinations with silver. The strength of the Ag-Ni composition is appreciably lower than that of the other three alloys. The discrepancy between the two groups is accounted for by the following characteristics of deformation and failure which were observed microscopically during the tests: A) The deformation of the W, Mo, and WC alloys did not involve the second phase particles to any appreciable extent. Slip and fracture took place in the silver-rich matrix alone, although the fracture path generally skirted the particles by favoring the phase boundaries. The deformation proceeded according to the following sequence: 1) formation of small, discontinuous microcracks in areas of the matrix adjacent to a particle, 2) general slip in the matrix and extension of cracks, 3) failure of specimens by propagation of cracks through matrix. The near coincidence of the 3 load-deflection curves suggests that the nature of the second phase particles does not decisively influence the plastic behavior of composite alloys of this composition as long as the particles do not undergo any considerable deformation themselves. B) A markedly different behavior was exhibited by the Ag-Ni composition where the relatively low flow strength is associated with the low yield strength of the nickel grains. Slip in the nickel grains was first observed at a stress of approximately 10,000 psi, although failure, at a later stage, took place by the propagation of cracks through the matrix. The ductility of this aggregate, in which both components deform plastically, is appreciably greater than that of the elastic-plastic composites. In summary: 1) The measured values of the moduli of elasticity of the composite alloys under discussion are in good agreement with the "strength of materials" approximation proposed by Paul.' 2) The overall plastic behavior of these particle-strengthened alloys is unaffected by the nature of the second phase particles, if the latter remain elastic. En Minera Coimolache se generan aproximadamente 700 t de residuos sólidos al año. El 50% de estos corresponde a residuos orgánicos, los que mediante fermentación anaeróbica con microorganismos eficaces son transformados en un plazo muy breve en bioabonos sólidos y líquidos (solución ecológica). Los microrganismos eficaces presentes en estos bioabonos han mejorado notablemente los procesos de siembra, incrementando hasta en un 361% la densidad poblacional de la misma. Por otro lado, dado que la actividad microbiana generada compite por el oxígeno del suelo reduciendo de forma colateral la generación de drenaje ácido de roca (el pH incrementó de 2.02 a 7.55 y se redujeron metales como el Fe, Pb, Cu y Zn), se ha obtenido una solución económica al emplear suelos abonados, como sustituto de la cal, para la cobertura de depósitos en proceso de cierre.

The Swedish mining companies LKAB and Boliden, the equipment supplier Atlas Copco, the general contractor NCC and the specialist company Reflex joined forces in 2005 to advance the field of rock technology for the purpose of mining and underground construction. The creation of the company Rock Tech Centre is part of the strategy developed by the Swedish mining industry to strengthen co-operation with industry, academia and society. This paper outlines the current R&D strategies developed for the industry in general, discusses what focus areas are selected and provides some details on the current RTC project portfolio, especially faster and better drifting.

These volumes report on the study initiated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to develop and apply a methodology to quantitatively assess the probability and potential benefits of technological innovation over the next twenty-five years. The potential was recognized for new technology to solve copper industry problems in the United States. Objectives of the study were to: (1) Develop a methodology to obtain the opinions of mineral experts about future events -their likelihood of occurrence, and, conditional on occurrence, when and to what extent they are likely to occur; (2) Identify, select, and describe potential technological innovations which would have significant impact on copper production; (3) Implement the methodology and obtain the opinions of the mineral experts regarding selected copper technologies; and (4) Analyze the expected future benefits of successful technological innovations :n the copper industry. Although individual technologies are continuously examined throughout the copper 'community', this study is the first known comprehensive forecast of future copper technology. This study is also believed to be unique 1n that it represents the consensus opinion of over sixty expert copper technologists on the expected use of innovative technology in the industry over the next 25 years. The report is contained in three volumes.

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred at various times in several working districts of Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W.They have occurred in headings only, under both hand and mechanised conditions, and with seam gas ranging from mainly methane to nearly pure carbon dioxide. A modification of inducer shotfiring using a shear cut was introduced in 1955, and in 1961 full face firing both to a machine cut shear and off the solid was introduced. The current series of outbursts -1961 to 1963 - has been induced under these systems with full control of the time of outburst, but without prediction, and with some disappointing production features.Various aspects of current conditions and practices at Metropolitan are considered singular, such as the coarse granulometry of outburst coal, the prevalence of floor heave, the absence of strong structures at outburst sites, the possibility of outburst at any stage in pillar formation up to the last few yards, the effect of rate of advance on outburst occurrence, and the mildness of many outbursts experienced.It is concluded that inducer shotfiring is a reliable control but it suffers by comparison with outburst-free conditions, and that control by preyention would be preferable.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas has been described in detail previously (Hargraves, 1958). Briefly, it is a combined gas and stress hazard of deep coal mining, usually occurring in virgin work and during active face advance, when coal and seam gas burst from the face into the workings.Instantaneous outbursts have occurred sporadically at Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W., since 1895. 1967 will be remembered as the year the world realized it was running out of silver. In May of this year a new era in tin the history of the white metal was begun as the power of the U.S. Treasury to regulate world .silver markets was staggered by one of the most intense speculative flurries in recent times. In the past few months the price of silver has risen from $1, 29 to over $1.80 per troy ounce and with it have spiraled the prices of a host of silver-bearing consumer items. Legislation has, been enacted to conserve our coinage and meager silver stocks and today large quantities of non-existent silver are trading hands at a fast pace on the commodity exchanges throughout the world. Now that the price of silver has been set loose, forces are in motion to dull the world's appetite for silver. At the same time there is strong incentive to provide greater quantities of silver to satisfy the world's hunger' for the metal.

Pebble grinding was used at Lake Shore Mines in 1949. A full description of experimental evidence and test plant results was published in 1952 1 and further operating details in 1954 2.' In more recent years the term autogenous grinding has been coined and is now frequently seen in the technical literature. Autogenous crushing and/or grinding covers any grinding mill in which the larger pieces of ore are made to grind the fine pieces; the crushing and grinding may be either dry or wet. This discussion deals only with wet autogenous grinding, and only in the fine grinding part of the circuit, i.e., from 6 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. The term pebble milling could apply to fine autogenous grinding in which the pebbles are made from the ore itself, or it could also refer to grinding with pebbles, such as flint pebbles, from a source outside the mine. The first mill to use screened ore to grind the ore (1949) was Lake Shore Mines, Kirkland Lake, Ont. Pebbles were screened from the jaw crusher discharge and used in 5x16-ft tube mills which had been converted to 6 ft 8 in. by 16-ft grate discharge pebble mills. The same general practice was adopted the following year by the Wright-Har-greaves Mine in Kirkland Lake. Shortly after that the Neptune Mines in Nicaragua started correspondence with the writer concerning the possibility of using screened ore for grinding in their plant. They first ran some plant-scale tests which confirmed the Lake Shore findings, with the ultimate result that their plant was successfully converted in 1956 to an autogenous grinding plant. In 1957-1958 the writer was successful in converting the grinding plant of Renabie Mines in northern Ontario to autogenous grinding. In all these plants the existing grinding equipment was converted, usually by expanding the diameter of the shell to make the change from steel grinding to ore pebble grinding mills. In all the above plants primary grinding was done in either small rod mills or ball mills. These mills first reduced the pebble mill feed to about 6 mesh. The final grinding in the pebble mills varied from 75 pct —200 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. At Lake Shore three stages of pebble milling were used, with a different size pebble in each stage. In other parts of the world interest was being shown in this form of grinding, and in March 1952 the writer had some correspondence with the mill staff at Outokumpu in Finland, with regard to the pebble system used at Lake Shore. At Stockholm in 1957 the account of the crushing and grinding system at Outokumpu was presented in a paper by H. Tanner and T. Heikkinen.V his is the only ore grinding plant that does not use grate discharges on its pebble mills; trunnion discharges equipped with heavy reverse spirals retain the pebble load. The first new mill designed to use screened ore as a grinding medium was the Bicroft mill at Bancroft, Ont., which began operation in the fall of 1956. In 1957 this plant was followed by similar installations at Faraday Mines, also in the Bancroft area, and the North Rankin Nickel Mines in the North West Territories. In 1958 the Dyno Mill at Bancroft was converted, using the same type of grinding. Since all these plants, designed by Kilborn Engineering (1954) Ltd., were originally planned as pebble grinding mills, they were able to take full advantage of the latest design and technique. They are neat in appearance and very efficient and easy to operate. Effect of Ore Hardness: It is often commented that this type of autogenous grinding applies only to hard siliceous ores. Experience has shown that this is not so. In the past ten years the author has had an opportunity to test more than a dozen ores, several of which were quite soft. One of these was shale. The softer ores actually make better looking pebbles than the hard ores. These soft ores produced no particles in the intermediate size range which could not be ground by the largest pebbles in the mill charge. Slabby ores, such as shales, make a suitable pebble for the —6 mesh grinding. It is not generally recognized that for fine grinding a spherical medium is not essential or more efficient. Another frequent objection to pebble grinding is the belief held by some operators that there is too much variation in the hardness of their particular ore to make it acceptable as a source of pebble media. Experience has also shown that this is not a serious problem at all. The variation in pebble load due to changes in the ore hardness is nothing like as great as most people would expect, and the method used for feeding the ore and controlling the the load in the mills is more than sufficient to take care of daily variations in ore hardness.
