The Crandall Canyon accident investigation included an interesting and unexplained observation by rescuers that the ?barrier rib had shifted northward as a unit, as much as 10 feet.? This is not the first mention of such a movement, although such reports are rare. Historical accounts describe unusual movement and displacement of intact coal, cribs and timbers. Two movements of particular interest are the creation of gaps above coal pillars and falling of standing support elements without apparent damage. A dynamic boundary element program was used to explore movements induced by slip on geologic features removed from the affected panel. While the resulting models are much too simple to fully replicate these observations, they do show that the types of phenomena observed are possible. They can also provide insight into the types of motions that ground support elements are subjected to during large bump events. This was demonstrated for the case of a large bump in a Book Cliffs coal mine. Seismic information suggested the source mechanism to be normal slip on a fault. A model of that source showed initial dilation of the panel followed by dynamic compression and rebound ? consistent with underground observations. The initial dilation is important as it may allow slender standing support to shift or fall.

INTRODUCTION In the USA regulatory agencies have adopted standards which limit the allowable concentration of ore dust in underground uranium mines. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has recommended a threshold limit value for silica which has been incorporated by reference in federal regulations (30 CFR 57, 1980). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) imposes a limit for unprocessed uranium ore dust for reducing the exposure to radioactive materials from inhalation (10 CFR 20, 1980). We have been unable to trace the origin of the NRC standard. Recently the ICRP has published recommendations concerning limits for intakes of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979). We have used the ICRP methodology to compute the dose equivalent commitment to lung and bone from inhalation of insoluble ore dust particles. These values were used to derive air concentrations which would provide an acceptable risk for induction of cancer from occupational exposure. Results indicate that the new ICRP recommendations are more restrictive than the present NRC standard for radioactivity. The maximum allowable dust load in a uranium mine will depend on both the concentration of silica (% Si02) and the amount of radioactivity (% U308). We have combined these standards assuming complete independence of biological hazard to establish boundary conditions for which either silica or radioactivity is the dominating factor. Based on these results we present suggestions for analysis of ore dust to insure compliance with regulatory agencies. SILICA STANDARDS Silicosis, fibrotic lung disease produced by crystalline silica, was one of the earliest forms of occupational disease to be recognized. The pulmonary lesions caused by silica, silicotic nodules, consist of concentrically arranged bundles of collagen fibers. Fusion of these nodules results in progressive massive fibrosis causing alveolar changes which decrease ventillation and blood flow in the lungs. The current Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for mineral dusts is based on the concentration of free silica. The standard is expressed in three forms: (1) Particle count standard: TLV (mppcf) = 300/(% Si02 + 10) (mppcf = million particles per cubic foot) (2) Respirable dust mass standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 10/(% respirable Si02 + 2) (3) Total dust standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 30/(% Si02 + 3) The most commonly used form is the respirable mass standard. These curent values for silica are based primarily on epidemilogical studies of Vermont granite workers and other occupationally exposed workers. In the Vermont study no cases of silicosis were seen in individuals employed after dust control measures were initiated and whose subsequent exposure averaged less than 5 mppcf. The free silica concentration in the airborne dust to which these workers were exposed averaged 25%. A concentration of 10 mppcf of granite dust is considered equivalent to 0.1 mg/m3 quartz. The current respirable mass standard allows a maximum silica concentration of 0.1 mg/m3. NIOSH (1974) has recommended a reduction in the current TLV for respirable silica to 0.05 mg/m3 Si02. As with radiation standards, the TLV for mineral dusts is an upper limit for time weighted average exposure. It is recommended that dust concentrations be maintained as far below the TLV as current practices permit. RADIATION STANDARDS The present concentration limit for airborne natural uranium in ore dust prior to chemical separation is 75 µg of uranium per m3 of air ( 10 CFR 20, 1980) . This corresponds to 1.85 Bq/m3 (50 pCi/m3 ) of natural uranium, U-238, U-235 and U-234 and is equivalent to 3.7 Bq/m3 (100 pCi/m3 ) of gross alpha activity with radioactive equilibrium between the long-lived alpha progeny through Ra-226. The origin or basis for this standard is not known, but it presumably includes both chemical toxicity and risk from somatic radiation injury. Recently the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977) has published recommendations concerning the objectives and criteria for limiting radiation exposures. This was followed b y a revision of the limits for intake of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979; ICRP, 1980). The previous compilation of limits for internal emitters was published by ICRP Committee II in 1959 (ICRP, 1959). "With seven new applications for plans of work for exploration in the international Seabed Area approved by the Council during its twentieth session of the International Seabed Authority, 26 total approvals have been made by the Council up to date. Among them, three contracts were made with COMRA. On 8 August 2014, China Minmetals Corporation submitted another application to the Authority for approval of a plan of work for exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Area, which is also sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China.China is one of the main contributors to the international seabed regime. The Presentation will describe China’s activities in the Area, such as exploration, technology development, environmental protection and policy making.JIAOLONG is a submersible with capacity of 7000 meters. JIAOLONG’s sea trials were carefully made in 4 years, from 2009 through 2012 and it successfully dove to a depth of 7062m in June 2012 at Mariana trench. A so called "Test Application Phase" started thereafter, and is planned to last for 3-4 years. Two cruises and 4 legs have already been made since then. A wide-range of findings were obtained during dives in South China Sea, and in COMRA’s Exploration Contract Areas for polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. This presentation will reveal the colorful findings."

Coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation is an innovative technology used in processing refractory iron ores. Given that size is essential to the separation of the metallic iron from the gangue, the morphology of metallic iron particles and their evolution during coal-based reduction are investigated in the present work. The size of the metallic iron particle increased from 128.76 µm to 565.70 µm when the reduction time increased from 20 min to 60 min at 1,225° C and C/O (i.e., the amount of coal addition in terms of the gram-atomic ratio of the fixed carbon in the coal added to the combined oxygen in iron oxides) of 2.5. Based on our microstructural and metallographic analysis, the iron ore reduction process can be divided into three stages: (1) metallic iron particle formation, (2) iron oxide reduction and metallic iron assembly and (3) metallic iron particle growth. Almost all iron oxides are reduced to metallic iron in the second stage. These newborn metallic iron particles are energetically active and able to assemble and grow, and are eventually separated from the gangue. The large metallic iron particles benefit the subsequent magnetic separation process.

"The drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a coproduct of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut off 10 percent of the world’s vanadium output. In February 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation.This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries — China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 96 percent of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage.This article summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal.Trend in vanadium explorationThe most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grades than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers.The 10 percent shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the state of Bahia in Brazil. It commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to produce between 7.6 and 8.6 kt (8,421 and 9,523 st) of V2O5 in 2016 at a target production cost of $3.71/lb (Largo Resources, 2016). This is the first primary vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in more than 35 years."

INTRODUCTION The LG-2 project is one element of the La Grande Complex, an integrated development of hydro-electric potential being constructed in north-western Quebec by the James Bay Energy Corporation. The project is located on the La Grande River about 65 miles east of Fort George on the James Bay coast and 600 miles north of Montreal. It comprises a 525 foot high dam, 81,000 feet of dykes, spillway and river diversion works and a 16 unit underground powerhouse that will have an installed capacity of 5,328 MW. The power installations at LG-2 represent approximately half of the total potential for the complex. When completed in 1982, LG-2 will rank as the largest underground powerhouse in the world. Studies and site explorations for the project were begun in 1971, construction commenced in 1973 and the roll date for the first machine is scheduled for February, 1980. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT OF POWER INSTALLATIONS As shown in Figure 1, the power installations are located on the south bank of the river about 4 miles downstream from the main dam. Mining in Cushenbury Canyon began in 1860 when John Cushenbury left his Holcomb Valley gold prospect and discovered a silver vein in the limestones of the present day Cushenbury Mine. Cushenbury Canyon is located along the western boundary of the Mojave Desert in Southern California and on the north slope of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Holcomb Valley, immediately southeast of Cushenbury Canyon was the most prolific gold producer in Southern California. Gold mining dominated the area until World War II when interest in the Lucerne Valley Limestone deposits was peaked by the construction of the Kaiser Steel Plant in Fontana, California. The steel making process required large amounts of metallurgical grade limestone and Kaiser geologists located claims in most of the limestone deposits. Kaiser Cement constructed a cement plant and limestone mine in Cushenbury Canyon in 1956. Kaiser Cement modernized the facility in 1982 to a four stage preheater-precalciner system. Mitsubishi Cement Corp. purchased the property in April, 1988, and through further system modifications have created the most efficient and modern cement plant in the United States.

The current understanding of the mechanics of rock fracturing during smooth blasting is largely empirical and qualitative due to an inability to model the dynamic process at the fundamental level. In order to overcome this difficulty, a numerical simulation of smooth blasting is performed using the Dynamic Lattice Network Model. This model is capable of simulating material inhomogeneities and the dynamic evolution of fragmentation at the micromechanical level. In this study, smooth blasting techniques are numerically analyzed to characterize the development of the damage rock zone during explosive fracturing.

Caterpillar unveiled a new dozer, the new Cat D10T2 dozer, that builds on the success the company has had with its D10T model. The newest version of the dozer includes refinements to its power train, automated controls and structures. The result, the company said, is high productivity with superior fuel efficiency, reliable operation with long-lived structures, as well as enhanced access for service technicians and operators. The D10T2 uses the latest load-sensing hydraulics technology combined with Cat advanced engine controls to maximize the amount of material moved for every drop of fuel burned. Improved filtration protects the fuel system, hydraulic system and power train oil system to help ensure high reliability and minimal machine downtime. Refined large structures, such as redesigned track roller frames, deliver longer service before rebuilds. Improved access and egress features enhance safety and productivity of technicians and operators, and optional powered access systems and platforms enable configuring the D10T2 for the site. Caterpillar offers the D10T2 with two variations of the Cat C27 engine with ACERT Technology. One version is U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 Final certified, and the other is capable of achieving emission levels equivalent to EPA Tier 2 standards. Both engine configurations produce net power of 447 kW (600 hp) in forward gears and 538 kW (722 hp) in reverse gears. The engine controller automatically adjusts power output based on the direction of travel. With the new system, the D10T2 has about 20 percent more power in reverse compared to its predecessor model. The result is faster cycle times and greater productivity in certain applications. The D10T2 is suited for a variety of applications including mining, heavy construction and bulk materials handling.

The Zarafshan/Newmont Joint Venture operates the Muruntau heap leach project, located in the Kyzylkum desert of central Uzbekistan. The mine produces more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) of gold from low-grade oxide ore stockpiles adjacent to the Muruntau open pit. It is op¬erated by the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine and is one of the largest gold resources known (Fig. 1). Since commissioning in 1995, total heap leach production has exceeded 21 t (675,000 oz). The joint venture uses four-stage crushing and screening to produce a final product for heap leaching, Merrill-Crowe processing and local refining.

Metallurgical process methods have seen dramatic improvement over the past fifty years. As these improvements have come about, more and more emphasis has been placed on obtaining accurate and rapid analysis of the metallurgical processes. Well-defined conventional laboratory analysis procedures which have proven to be reliable were developed early in the mineral industry's history; however, these conventional procedures, which have not changed appreciably in fifty years, have the serious drawback that they are too slow to be of appreciable value in automatic control of the processes. For example, the assay results normally become available to a mill operator from eight to twenty-four hours after a sample is taken. Since the desired mineral separation can only be made while the minerals are in the flotation circuit, conventional assay results provide information similar to postmortem reports. Consequently, using conventional procedures, the mill is operated with information from an earlier period of time, which may not reflect current conditions. In recent years there has been a steady increase in the volume of required samples. At the same time, labor, material, and overhead costs have continued to rise causing the cost per assay to reach an alarming level. This rising cost per assay, plus the increasing demand for rapid analysis necessary for control, has caused the mining and metal processing industries to look toward other techniques to solve these problems As a result, X-ray fluorescence which can provide on-stream analysis necessary for control, as well as perform numerous laboratory assays at lower cost and at a much greater speed than conventional methods, has gained wide-spread attention. In addition, multichannel X-ray fluorescent instruments are now available which have been perfected to the point where the analysis of the most important chemical constituents is available within one minute after a sample is presented to the X-ray analyzer. Because of these obvious advantages, extensive use is being made today of X-ray analysis in the mining industry to analyze slags, ores, and mineral content of rocks. The results are used to make quick decisions for both mining and beneficiation of metals. For example, X-ray systems which provide rapid on-stream analysis of the slurries at desired points Fn metallurgical processes have recently been developed. The successful application of these systems has moved the milling process a step closer to fully automatic control.

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two-phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system.

In the fully mechanized top caving mining of steeply inclined, extra-thick seams with variable angles, the mechanisms of roof rock movement, failure, caving and filling are highly complex. This is due to the varying angle of coal seam in different areas, which makes rock–equipment stability control challenging. In this paper, the surrounding rock deformation and failure mechanisms, bearing structure of the overburden, and working characteristics of the supports are elucidated. The principle and key technologies of rock–equipment stability control are presented and applied to control the overburden of the regional failure and realize safe and efficient mining of the working face.

"INTRODUCTION Tunnel is a closed space structure and it is necessary to ensure the sufficient time and route for safe evacuation for the tunnel users in case of a tunnel fire. In order to do so, damages and collapse of the tunnel linings and the secondary disasters can be avoided. Furthermore, the road tunnel is one of important infrastructural facilities and stopping its function for a long time for a tunnel fire could cause a great economic loss. Therefore, the tunnel structure shall be the one which can be repaired as soon as possible, and the fire protection methods need to be selected among those which enable the service to start as early as possible. The necessity of the fire protection works is evaluated for the tunnel structure with the consideration of the expensive tunnel construction cost and the economic effects of the tunnel service. Naturally, the fire protection works, which can protect the tunnel linings from the tunnel fire with small repairs, are inevitable. Design engineers of the fire protection works estimate the scale of fire from the degree of damages on the linings and its repair cost, the effect of fire extinguishers placed inside of the tunnel, the secondary disasters in accordance with the tunnel lining damages if any, and the ratio of fire protection cost calculated from tunnel operation cost. Based on this information, the engineers design the fire protection works according to the permissible limits Among the design cases of the tunnel fire protection in Japan, as shown in Table 1, there is no cases that used the fire temperature-time curve to design the fire protection works for large fire caused by vehicles catching fire. However, the most of cases used 30-60 minutes for fire duration based on the entry prohibition of dangerous goods carrying vehicles or the effect of early fire fighting. This paper will study the variation between different methods used for fire protection in road tunnel in Japan to evaluate them and try to found some recommendations. Especial l care will be attention to Polypropylenes (PP) which is starting to be applied lately."

New and developing communication systems en-able underground miners to, not only connect to the surface from an increased communication coverage area, but also to be discovered in the event of an emergency. Communication and tracking systems are required by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration (MSHA) regulations, aiming to enhance health and safety and routine production in underground operations. Modeling a mine?s potential communication coverage area will increase overall coverage and efficiency of the communication network itself. Modeling the propagation of wireless communications enables ideal broadcast locations to be found when designing a communications network. Strategic placement of broad-cast devices results in a reliable communication network that can better withstand disruption in daily operation and during a time of emergencies. Research on wireless communication in mines has been ongoing since 1922, when the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments in its experimental mine in Bruceton, PA (Schiffbauer & Brune, 2006a). Ac cording to Dobroski and Stolarczyk (1982), ?as early as 1922, Bureau of Mines experiments showed that radio propagation in mines was possible but not practical.? In 2006, the underground communication technologies available to the mining industry had inherent problems that limited communication capabilities. Because harsh underground mine environments significantly reduce line of sight and propagation range and introduce power and safety concerns, the overall effectiveness of underground communication technologies were limited. Longwall mining appears very attractive from an engineering standpoint because of its simplicity. The use of one long, continuous face can simplify power distribution, ventilation, and supervision, and minimizes or prevents lost time associated with the tramming of equipment in room-and-pillar systems. Since the longwall system is more amenable to automation, it is inherently safer than room and pillar. Remote control of all face equipment from gate roads will obviate the exposure of men in the face area. Considering what has been said, it seems a paradox that more longwall installations are not found in the United States. However, with favorable mining conditions in relatively level seams of adequate height under shallow cover, it has been possible to develop highly productive, mechanized, room-and-pillar systems. Thus there has been no real incentive to employ longwall in the United States. In Europe, mining companies usually have very little choice between the two systems. Pitching seams of low height located at great depth dictate the use of longwall methods. With depletion of its readily accessible reserves, mining conditions will be similar to those now prevailing in Europe, and an increase in the use of longwall in the United States can be anticipated.

I am Alfred E. Michon, Vice President- International for Burlington Northern Inc. I work for BN's holding company and my responsibilities include co-ordinating the activities of our eight subsidiary companies as they relate to international commerce--an increasingly important aspect of the overall business of our company. Until last April, I was President of the Fort Worth and Denver and Colorado and Southern railroads, subsidiaries of BN. Prior to that, I headed the marketing and pricing area of BN's coal transportation business. Based on my experience in the energy industry, both domestic and international, I would like to discuss the world-wide trend towards the reliance on low-sulfur coal in lieu of natural gas and oil for the generation of electricity. Since pontification on the energy scene world- wide is best left to consultants with scenario-spitting computers, let me in- stead emphasize this trend through two examples. First I will describe the regulatory and economic factors which have encouraged the replacement of natural gas by low sulfur coal as a boiler fuel in the US. BN's investments in track and equipment were instrumental in this conversion. Secondly, I will show how this same combination of factors has created a large demand for steam coal in the Far East. Again, our company's strategy is to facilitate conversion to coal overseas through timely and sufficient investments.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a quantitative assessment of the risk of lung cancer associated with occupational exposures to diesel exhaust was performed. This assessment was primarily based upon the results from a study of the effects of chronic inhalation exposure to diesel exhaust in Fischer-344 rats (previously reported by Mauderly et al., 1987). An adaptation of the Armitage-Doll multistage model, which allows for an age-dependent effect of exposure, was used to model the tumor response data. This model was fitted to all tumors (benign and malignant), and to malignant neoplasms alone. Estimates of unit risk (potency) were derived based upon a linear approximation to the results from the multistage model. A biologically equivalent dose was developed to scale the results from airborne exposure in rats to humans, which was adjusted for differences in weight, ventilation rate, deposition fraction, and the percentage of time actually exposed. Comparisons are made with risk estimates derived from modeling other rat inhalation bioassays and from applying different models to the study by Mauderly et al. (1987). We emphasize that our risk estimates are based upon a series of assumptions and carry a great deal of uncertainty. In particular, uncertainties regarding the effects of exposure on lung clearance mechanisms, the deposition rates in humans, and the relevance of our exposure index limit our confidence in these risk estimates. Because of these uncertainties, this risk assessment would best be viewed as an exploratory effort. Key words: Diesel, lung cancer, risk assessment

The persistent requirement for methods and equipment capable of detecting hazardous anomalies in advance of underground mining has led to the development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines of a directional radar probe. The probe operates from boreholes drilled from the surface into the underground region to be mined. The engineering model radar was completed in early 1982 and field demonstration tests were performed in May of that year at a selected coal mine. Preliminary in-situ electromagnetic tests were performed at several candidate coal mines to evaluate the radio-frequency characteristics of the coal. A coal mine in New Mexico was selected on the basis of low EM propagation losses in the coal and the presence of an extensive coal seam displacing fault as a radar target. The borehole radar was operated in two vertical boreholes which intersected the coal seam at approximately 25 and 40 feet from the fault interface. Radar reflections from the coal/ rock interface were detected in both tests. Underground tests in a horizontal borehole in the coal were less successful because of interfering reflections. Additional borehole-to-borehole tests were performed with a separate ground penetrating electromagnetic system to obtain radar range calibration data. The coal was found to be bounded by very lossy roof and floor sandstone and shale while propagation through the coal seam was obtained at distances up to 175 feet between test boreholes. Coal seam continuity was indicated by the hole-to-hole experiments through a section of the seam previously thought to be completely cut off by the fault.

The gold mining and ore processing operations of Minera Yanacocha S.A. are 10cated in an area 4,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes same 600 km north of Lima and 20 km north of Cajamarca. The joint venture partners are Newmont Second Capital (USA); Compania Minera Condesa (Peril); Mine Or (France) and the IFC. Newmont manages the operation. The Yanacocha district comprises several areas with mineralization evidence. The first ore with minable reserves of 28 million tonnes of ore assaying about 1.4 gpt Au is called Carachugo and is being mined and treated at the rate of 14,000 tonnes of ore per day by open pit mining methods. ROM ore is dump leached and the gold recovered in a Merrill Crowe plant.
