The concrete lining for a long 8.05 km (5 mi) section of New York City Water Tunnel No. 3 was cast in place. The contractor, Grow-Perini-Skanska, placed over76,841 m3 (100,505 cy) of concrete, pouring 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The concrete was dropped 204 m (670 ft) to the tunnel level, transported by rail to a concrete remixer and pump, and placed in 146.3m (480 ft) of full circle forms. Some of the many challenges include the sheer magnitude of the job, navigating through drifts, a raise and curves, dealing with ground water inflows, and placing the concrete within time limits.

The mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation changes dramatically from west to east as the formation nears the basal contact of the Duluth Complex. This reflects a contact metamorphism that took place with the emplacement of the igneous Duluth Complex at tem¬peratures as high as 1200 °C. However, the mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation also varies vertically through the stratigraphy of the unit. This variability in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions makes it difficult to predict exact horizons where specific minerals will occur. The iron-formation has been subdivided into four broad stratigraphic units (lower cherty, lower slaty, upper cherty, and upper slaty) and into four lateral mineralogical zones (1-4). Zone 1, the westernmost zone, is characterized by quartz, magnetite, hematite, carbonates, talc, chamosite, greenalite, minnesotaite, and stilpnomelane. The silicate mineralogy in Zone 2 of the Biwabik Iron Forma¬tion changes very little. However, the minerals begin to change dramatically in Zone 3. Most significantly, Zone 3 is characterized by the appearance of grunerite in both a tabular form and a fibrous form. In Zone 4, the original silicate minerals have completely reacted, and a new suite of minerals occupies the iron-formation. These include grunerite, hornblende, hedenbergite, ferrohypersthene (ferrosilite), and fayalite.

The Flambeau and Ridgeway Mines, both owned and operated by wholly owned subsidiaries of Kennecott Minerals Company, were located very close to populated areas having initial concerns about health, safety and the environment. The success of both operations depended upon developing a framework of community support and enhancing sustainable development opportunities throughout the entire life cycle of the mining operations to address these concerns. The protection of the Flambeau River was the cornerstone of the Flambeau Mine’s success. The highest priority for the Ridgeway Mine was to ensure long-term physical, chemical and ecological stability of the reclaimed mine site. Both of these goals have been achieved and are discussed in this paper, which highlights Kennecott Minerals Company’s integration of sustainable development principles into its business decision-making and management processes.

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. This paper was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to identify risk factors associated with bumps in the prevention of fatalities and accidents in highly stressed, bump-prone ground conditions. Changes of failure mechanism with increasing confinement, from extensional- to shear-dominated failure, are widely observed in the rupture of intact specimens at the laboratory scale and in rock masses. In the previous analysis conducted in 2018, both unconfined and triaxial compressive tests were conducted to investigate the strength characteristics of some specimens of a Utah coal, including the spalling limits, the ratio of apparent unconfined compressive strength (AUCS) to unconfined compressive strength (UCS), the damage characteristics, and the post-yield dilatancy. These mechanical characteristics were found to be strongly anisotropic as a function of the orientation of the cleats relative to the loading direction.

Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Part III reviewed the large-scale demonstration of the MT-DEW-SX process at Bagdad, Arizona. Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and a P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC with 1,380 kPa (200 psig) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling some of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step, and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an acid-autogenous process for pressure leaching. This paper (Part IV) discusses the development and design of a full-scale commercial application for the Morenci operation in Arizona.

In a typical mining operation, run-of-mine (ROM) ore is crushed and screened to achieve a desired particle size distribution and then fed to processing equipment for further refining. For an operation to be profit-able, the ore handling system from the mine face to final product loadout must be reliable. However, the handling system components do not always perform as expected and production problems related to material flow occur. These problems include flow stoppages, limited live storage capacities, uncontrollable flow, segregation, spillage and dust emissions. These result in lost production, excessive maintenance, safety and environmental issues, and even structural failures, in some cases. Flow patterns Flow problems and their solutions can be best understood by first learning how bulk solids flow. As bulk solids discharge by gravity from a storage system, primarily two types of flow patterns can develop: funnel flow and mass flow. Figure 1 shows a schematic of these two flow patterns. In funnel flow, only a portion of the material is in motion during discharge, which flows toward the outlet through a channel that forms within the stagnant material. Funnel flow occurs when a hopper is not sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the walls or when the outlet is not fully effective. In mass flow, all of the material is in motion whenever any is discharged ? there is no stagnant material. Mass flow occurs when the hopper is sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the hopper walls. Shallow valleys are not permitted and the outlet must be fully effective. A third type of flow pattern, called expanded flow, can develop when a mass flow hopper (or hoppers) is placed beneath a funnel flow hopper or bin. The mass flow hopper is designed to activate a sufficiently large flow channel in the funnel flow hopper to avoid flow problems due to a rathole. The flow pattern in which a bulk solid discharges from a storage system strongly influences the flow problems that may occur in that facility.

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. This study aims to investigate the effects of operational variables on concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency, and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. For this purpose, the effects of the pulp solids content, collector and frother dosage, and preparation and concentrate collection time were studied using a Taguchi experimental design. The results of statistical analyses indicated that the concentrate collection time and pulp density were the most influential parameters on concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, concentrate collection time, collector dosage, and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. Also, the separation efficiency was mostly influenced by the concentrate collection time. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the second-order rectangular distribution model perfectly matched the experimental flotation data. The highest kinetic constant of 0.0756 s−1 was obtained from the test, which was performed with 35% solids content and 40 and 20 g/t collector and frother, respectively. The highest predicted copper recovery of 99.57% was obtained from the test at 30% solids content, and the collector and frother dosages of 40 and 15 g/t, respectively

In designing and operating underground room-and-pillar coal mines, it is always difficult to achieve a good balance between preventing surface subsidence and achieving high recovery ratio. In this paper, a design methodology applying the pressure arch theory is proposed, and the principles and mathematical models involved are detailed. A computer program was developed to carry out the design optimization process and was applied to the examination of a documented case in which a massive cascading pillar failure had occurred over a large area in a shallow coal mine. The results indicate that the proposed design method can be applied to prevent subsidence while achieving reasonably high recovery ratio for roomand- pillar mining operations.

The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

A cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) is being constructed on the AA Leach Pad at the Barrick Goldstrike Mine site near Carlin, Nevada. The purpose of the cover is to eliminate/minimize infiltration of meteoric waters into the leach pad. Laboratory and numerical analyses indicate that Carlin Formation siltstone (TCS), a locally available material, has the necessary hydrologic characteristics when placed on the leach pad to act as a CCBE. A pilot study has been conducted on a small-scale test cover placed on the AA Leach Pad to examine the cover performance under irrigated conditions. The preliminary test results demonstrate that the designed cover is capable of preventing meteoric water infiltration.

The marble deposits of Yule Creek were first discovered in the late1870s. Minor quarrying occurred between that discovery and the early 1900s. Major development occurred in 1905, when Channing Meek, with some help from the Rockefellers, raised $3 million to develop the Colorado Yule Marble Quarry. That is $50 million in today’s dollars. Some of the words used to describe the marble deposit were “gigantic, remarkable, flawless and immense.” Boosters proclaimed, “The marble age is here.” Obviously, dreams were big for Marble.

The government of India convened a precedent-setting meeting in New Delhi on Nov. 12, 2001.The meeting brought together regulators and the mining industry in an attempt to fix the industry’s mine development problems in that country. More than 150people attended the all-day session. Ram Vilas Paswan, Minister of Coal and Mines, chaired the meeting. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of State for Coal and Mines, was also present. The secretary of the Department of Mines and the Joint Secretaries and Additional Secretary also participated. The Department of Mines’ mandate is for economic growth: to get new mine development going and to make investment in mining attractive for both domestic and foreign-owned companies.

A series of flotation experiments were carried out in a 2.25-dm3 laboratory-scale Rushton turbine cell using hydrophobic quartz particles. Flotation was performed at a constant mean bubble diameter over a range of superficial gas velocities and impeller rotational speeds. The overall flotation rate constant increased linearly with increasing superficial gas velocity (and hence bubble surface area flux). The rate constant also increased linearly with increasing energy dissipation, until a maximum value was reached. A further increase in energy dissipation had little effect on the rate constant. The dependency of the rate constant on energy dissipation is a reflection of the size range and hydrophobicity of the particles used in this study. The flotation rate constant increased with increasing particle size, except at the highest energy dissipation value examined, for which the flotation rate of the larger particles reached a plateau and, in some cases, decreased. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental results and those predicted by a fundamental flotation model using experimentally measured values for mean energy dissipation and the Sauter mean bubble diameter. The bubble velocity was adjusted to obtain the best fit to the experimental data. The inferred bubble velocity, based on the flotation model, was found to increase with increasing superficial gas velocity (and bubble surface area flux) and was found to decrease with increasing impeller rotational speed. While the inferred bubble velocities were significantly lower than experimentally measured bubble velocities, and, except at low superficial gas velocity values, significantly higher than the bubble swarm velocity calculated from gas holdup measurements, similar trends with impeller rotational speed and superficial gas velocity were observed in all cases.

INTRODUCTION The headrace tunnel in Amlach is part of a hydro electric power scheme near the city of Lienz in south west Austria. The project is owned and developed by Tiroler Wasserkraftwerke AG, the regional electrical supply utility. The construction work was divided into seven contracts for the entire scheme. The power output will be 60 MW, this being developed from a head of 370 m and water flows of 20 m3/s. The water will be tapped from the river Drau and lead through a 22 km long headrace on the south side of the Puster valley through the Lienzer Dolomiten mountain range. Contract No. 4, which is a joint venture between Mayreder, Züblin, Strabag, Rella and Innerebner, involves the construction of 13.5 km of the headrace. It was decided to bore this from one single adit, which probably makes it the longest pressure tunnel driven from one side by a TBM. (See Fig. 1.) For the tunnelling an Atlas Copco Jarva MK 12 TBM was chosen. The excavation diameter is 3.90 m, with the final lined diameter being in the range of 3.20 to 3.40 m. The back-up is a 145 m long single track rail system supplied by Mühlhäuser (Germany). Side-tipping cars with a capacity each of 8.2 m were used for removing the muck. Introduction Uranium was recovered from mining of collapse breccia pipe deposits in the Arizona Strip district in northwestern Arizona (Figure 1) intermittently between 1956 and 1990, with cumulative production having totaled 23.3 million pounds of U3O8 (8960 tU) at an average grade of 0.6% U3O8. Production was suspended in 1990 because of low uranium prices, but the recent resurgence in market price once again makes the breccia pipe deposits potentially attractive exploration and development targets. This paper describes: (1) formation of the pipe structures and their metallogenesis; (2) mining and milling of breccia ore; and (3) potential roadblocks to development of new breccia pipe mines. Breccia Pipe Formation Formation of the breccia pipes began in cave systems formed during development of karst topography in the Mississippian Redwall Limestone. The karst Redwall surface was eventually covered by up to 900 meters of shallow marine to continental sediments ranging in age from Pennsylvanian to Triassic. The pipes were formed by progressive upward stoping caused by groundwater ascending under hydraulic head along near-vertical faults, joints and fractures. The stoping process involved both chemical disaggregation and mechanical failure of roof and wall rock. Upward stoping of successively younger units allowed for upward propagation of a pipe and resulted in a chimney-like column of breccia between the steep walls of the pipe. Syndepositional thickening of sedimentary units of varying ages indicates that pipe formation began as early as early Pennsylvanian time and continued intermittently through Triassic time.

An increase in the importance of low-grade materials as sources of gold and silver has led to the need for improved analytical methods on leach solutions, ores and various effluents, residues, and in-process streams. These are required by plant operators as guides to process control and for accounting pldrposes. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and AAS preceded by pre- concentration have been applied successfully to resolve many such problems. However, AAS is no panacea and imprecision or loss of accuracy can result if adequate precautions are not taken to prevent losses and eliminate interferences. The recent methods are discussed together with methods for overcoming difficulties. Comparisons with more classical analytical techniques are also given.

This geometallurgical study examines the gangue mineral variability at the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper mine in Utah. Understanding an orebody?s mineralogy is important for mine and mill planning because it provides information on the size, texture, and distribution of ore minerals, the relationship between ore and gangue minerals, and the extent and type of alteration. Quantification of the mineralogical variability and properties of an orebody provides valuable input to the ore model and may have a significant effect on recovery optimization. This study was designed to be carried out on an initially detailed scale in order to develop a robust methodology for measuring and quantifying specific parameters, such as the distribution of mineral phases, alteration assemblages and fractures from key ore domains at the Bingham Canyon mine (Figure 1). Details of the methodology are reported below. This technique can be applied to testing the impact of mineralogy on a number of processing parameters. [ ] Figure 1. The samples for this study were collected from the northwest part of the deposit circled on the map. PROJECT BACKGROUND Geology The Bingham Canyon deposit is a large porphyry Cu-Mo-Au deposit with associated skarn and base-metal replacement deposits mined in an open-pit mine measuring about 2.5 miles across and 4,000 feet deep. The deposit is hosted by the Bingham Stock, a Late Eocene to Mid-Oligocene intrusive complex. The skarn is hosted by the Late Carboniferous-age Bingham Mine Formation, which is comprised of quartzites and basal limestones (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). The Bingham Stock is a composite intrusive complex that was emplaced over a period of about two million years. The oldest phase is described as a fine-grained equigranular monzonite (MZ), which intruded the country rocks at 39.8 ± 0.4 Ma (U-Pb zircon TIMS age) (Parry et al., 2001). Subsequently, the quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP) was emplaced, followed by intrusion of a latite porphyry (LP). The final intrusive phase, which forms narrow dikes that crosscut the Bingham Stock, is represented by a quartz latite porphyry (QLP), which is dated to 37.5 ± 0.4 Ma by 40Ar/39Ar dating of sanidine (Deino and Keith, 1998). Also present, are a minette dike in contact with a QLP dike (Waite et al., 1998; Deino and Keith, 1998), and a biotite porphyry (BP), a quartz latite porphyry breccia (QLPbx), and a pebble dike (Redmond, 2002). The copper orebody is centered above the Bingham Stock and forms an inverted cup shape with three high-grade copper zones extending to depth. Molybdenite mineralization occurs within and extends below the copper orebody, but is not correlated with copper mineralization. The main sulfide assemblage is chalcopyrite, bornite, molybdenite, and pyrite. Gold is locally intergrown with chalcopyrite and bornite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998; Phillips et al., 1998). The surrounding country rocks host skarn deposits with three main ore types - garnet skarns, massive sulfides, and iron oxides. The garnet skarns contain chalcopyrite and pyrite with magnetite veins. In the massive sulfides chalcopyrite and pyrite occur either in banded sulfides or in unconsolidated microbreccias. The iron oxides contain disseminated chalcopyrite with minor chalcocite and bornite (Harrison and Reid, 1998). The deposit is overprinted by several stages of alteration. Potassic alteration is concentrated at the center of the deposit. It is surrounded and partially overlapped by a propylitic alteration zone. Both zones are overprinted by sericitic alteration. In the northern part of the deposit evidence for argillic alteration can be found (Bowman et al., 1987). Similarly, the skarn deposit was also overprinted by several stages of alteration: wollastonite, idocrase, and garnet in cherty limestones, and quartz and diopside forming in calcareous quartzites. Distally, diopside was replaced by talc, tremolite, dolomite, secondary calcite, and pyrite, and quartz and sulfide veinlets with biotite and actinolite selvages are present. Andradite garnet, diopside, quartz, magnetite, hematite, and copper sulfides were overprinted by wollastonite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). Because the monzonite, quartz monzonite porphyry, latite porphyry, and quartz latite porphyry host the bulk of the mineralization, our research is focused on these lithologic units. Geometallurgy On the basis of geological (lithology, alteration assemblages, fracture density, copper mineralization) and metallurgical properties, the deposit has been divided into 33 ore domains by mine geologists and metallurgists (Figure 1). In map view, these domains cross geologically defined boundaries (MZ, QMP etc.). These domains reflect regions of the deposit that have particular, mapable attributes or properties. They reflect a combination of geological and mineralogical characteristics that combine to impact processing. Alteration, for example, as shown by talc mineralization, is one such key feature.
