Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaire called the Saturn and conducted a laboratory study using a Fletcher High Dual-boom Mast Feed (HDDR) roof bolting machine. The Saturn luminaire was designed to (1) enhance floor illumination to enable better detection of trip hazards in the interior spaces of a roof bolter and (2) reduce glare that has typically been an issue of concern on roof bolters. This paper reports on the results of achieving the second objective. The existing roof bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared with three versions of the Saturn luminaire relative to light intensity (100%, 75%, and 50%). Discomfort and disability glare data were obtained from 30 participants that comprised three age groups. Discomfort glare perceptions were obtained using the De Boer rating scale, and disability glare was quantified by using Mars Letter Contrast Sensitivity tests. Discomfort glare was reduced at least 3 levels with all Saturn versions. Also, a predictive model was used to estimate discomfort glare, and the results were similar. Disability glare was the least for the Saturn’s 50% intensity, and all Saturn versions had significantly less disability glare than with the baseline lighting. Veiling luminance was calculated and used as another indicator of disability glare. Veiling luminance was 28 to 42 times greater with the baseline lighting as compared with that of the Saturn lighting. Lastly, visibility levels were calculated. The Saturn versions were 4 to 6.5 times better in terms of visibility level.

Rapid growth in the rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of Federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing Federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

ABSTRACT Health and safety indicators help mine sites predict the likelihood of an event, advance initiatives to control risks, and track progress. Although useful to encourage organizations to work together, executing such risk assessments comes with challenges. This paper focuses on one trona mine’s experience in the development and implementation of a field level risk assessment program to help its entire organization understand and manage risk to an acceptable level. Through a transformational process of ongoing support and communication, Solvay Green River fostered a culture of trust and safety grounded in risk assessment, safety interactions, and hazard correction. The application of consistent risk assessment (RA) tools was critical to create a participatory workforce that not only talks about safety, but actively identifies energies that contribute to hazards and potential incidents. In this paper, reflecting on the mine’s process of RA implementation provides examples of likely barriers that sites may encounter when trying to document and manage risks. As discussed, consistent efforts to establish a participatory risk management program are worth the initial struggle to ultimately reduce incidents. INTRODUCTION Work-related health and safety (H&S) incidents often account for lost days on the job, contributing to organizational/financial and personal/social burdens [1-2]. Accompanying research demonstrates that risk and ambiguity around risk contribute to almost every decision that individuals make throughout the day [3-4]. In response, understanding individual attitudes toward risk has been unquestionably linked to predicting H&S behavior [5]. Although an obvious need exists to identify more comprehensive methods to assess and mitigate potential hazards, some argue that risk management is not given adequate attention in occupational H&S [6]. Additionally, research suggests that a current lack of knowledge, skills, and motivation are primary barriers to mitigating workplace risks [3-6]. Therefore, enhancing knowledge and awareness around risk-based decisions, including individuals’ abilities to understand, measure, and assign levels of risk to determine an appropriate response, is increasingly important in hazardous environments to predict and prevent incidents. This paper focuses on tailored approaches to field level risk assessment (FLRA), measurement, and common barriers to participating in such activities. The authors use a trona mine in Green River, Wyoming, as a case study to illustrate how the organization overcame widespread and site-specific challenges to implement a proactive risk management program. By discussing the mine’s tailored FLRA program, this case study contributes to the literature by first, providing examples of critical components that need to be in place to ensure successful risk management and second, context for continuous quality improvement that can foster a higher level of trust and empowerment on site."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) cooperated with 3M Company in the design and testing of a new environmentally controlled primary crusher operator booth at the company’s Wausau granite quarry near Wausau, WI. This quarry had an older crusher booth without a central heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, and without an air filtration and pressurization system. A new replacement operator booth was designed and installed by 3M based on design considerations from past NIOSH research on enclosed cab filtration systems. NIOSH conducted pre-testing of the old booth and post-testing of the new booth to assess the new filtration and pressurization system’s effectiveness in controlling airborne dusts and particulates. The booth’s dust and particulate control effectiveness is described by its protection factor, expressed as a ratio of the outside to inside concentrations measured during testing. Results indicate that the old booth provided negligible airborne respirable dust protection and low particulate protection from the outside environment. The newly installed booth provided average respirable dust protection factors from 2 to 25 over five shifts of dust sampling with occasional worker ingress and egress from the booth, allowing some unfiltered contaminants to enter the enclosure. Shorter-term particle count testing outside and inside the booth under near-steady-state conditions, with no workers entering or exiting the booth, resulted in protection factors from 35 to 127 on 0.3- to 1.0-µm respirable size particulates under various HVAC airflow operating conditions.

Three years ago a research program was initiated at the University of Saskatchewan to develop seismic surveying techniques for use in the Precambrian geological environment. The success of the reflection method in many younger geological settings suggested that this is the technique which would be the most suitable for experimentation. A successful adaptation of this technique to the Shield environment would make mapping of rock formations possible to much greater depth than is possible at the present time with any other applied geophysical technique. This presentation attempts to illustrate the advances which have been made in this program and will provide some insight into future plans. The field investigations were limited to the Flin Flon basin near to the town of Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. 1). This area was chosen because the surface geology has been mapped in great detail and it is a very important base metal producing region. It is an ancient sedimentary basin with some characteristics similar to areas where the reflection method has been successful.

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. Lime is one of the most extensively used chemicals in industry. Other than sulfuric acid, it is used in greater quantities than any other man-made industrial chemical. In 1974 there were 20,368,000 tons of lime used in the United States, which amounts to approximately 190 pounds for each man, woman and child in our nation. Lime also is perhaps the most diversely used of any industrial chemical. It is used in such areas as pharmaceutical, chemical, steel making, glass making, production of copper and aluminum, sugar refining, agriculture, construction, ecological endeavors, potable water treatment and sanitation. Figure I lists the major uses of lime for 1974, which is the latest year for which this data is available. The impact of the use of lime for ecological reasons did not show up to any appreciable extent in 1974, but we expect this to be a significant factor within the next few years. Fortunately, in the United States and also in most of the world, there are many deposits of high quality limestone available for the production of hood quality lime. For this discussion, we will assure that a limestone of a suitable quality and size consist will be available in a storage bin or stockpile near the kiln. Quality requirements for the lime product will be covered. We also will give a brief description of the three most popular types of lime calcining systems, how they function, and expected lime product quality from each of these. Commercial fuels and major accessory equipment will be discussed briefly.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research recently developed a series of models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the gas distribution around a continuous mining machine with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations. CFD models using Species Transport Model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100 percent of the discharge redirected back toward the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100 percent of the discharge redirected back toward the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15 percent of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85 percent directed into the return. These models were compared against a model with a conventional scrubber discharge, where air is directed away from the face into the return. The CFD models were calibrated and validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100 percent redirected, equally divided case. These models identified relatively high gassy areas around the continuous miner, which may not warrant their use in coal mines with medium to high methane liberation rates. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, and the validation of the models based on experimental data.

It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While there have been many studies aimed at understanding total dust concentrations and silica content associated with different mining conditions (e.g., locations/occupations within a mine, cutting methods, geologic strata), little research has been completed to more comprehensively characterize respirable dust (i.e., by distributions of particle composition, size or shape). For such analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) may represent a powerful tool. This article is a preliminary investigation of SEM-EDX to characterize respirable dust from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. Samples were collected from various locations in the study mine, and individual dust particles were identified and classified by mineral type. A continuous personal dust monitor was also used to estimate respirable dust concentrations during sampling. This data was compared to particle densities observed under the SEM. Dust is generally defined as small, solid particles with an effective diameter between 1 and 100 µm. In underground coal mines, dust is produced by a variety of activities such as coal and rock cutting, materials handling, haulage and from a variety of materials. While the coal itself is primarily made up of organic carbon, it is estimated that as much as 60 percent of coal mine dust consists of mineral matter, including clays, metal oxides and sulfides, carbonates, quartz, phosphates and heavy minerals (WHO, 1997). Mineral matter may be ingrained in the coal seam or associated with adjacent or interlying strata, and may also be contributed by specific activities such as rock dusting. When dust is generated or made airborne, suspended particles tend to settle slowly with gravitational forces, but can remain airborne for extended periods of time depending on environmental conditions such as air velocity (Courtney et al., 1986) and particle properties such as size (ISO, 1995; WHO, 1999). Thus, miners working underground are routinely subject to occupational dust exposures ? with highly variable characteristics between and even within mines.

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

The various ion exchange reactions occurring during the restoration of formations contaminated with ammonia during in situ uranium leaching are reviewed. Data are presented on the restoration of a previously leached laboratory packed column using line saturated brine. Although this restoration fluid selectively and effectively removed the ammonia, 24.5 pore volumes are required to reduce the ammonia concentration from 500 to 3 ppm. The presence of NaCl in the restoration fluid is beneficial in + improving the selectivity of the system for NH removal and reducing ca++ ion consumption.

Top-down constructed large-diameter (up to 90 m or 300 ft) shaft design and constructability issues present an interesting suite of challenges and opportunities highlighted in this paper. The study covers 2D and 3D finite element models used to analyze various failure modes, evaluate the shaft liner and internal structures' response to seismic loading, assist in segment design and assess final structural design tradeoffs. Efforts to achieve economic advantage over conventional heavy civil practices have prompted innovative solutions for ring and segment design, ring build assembly and annulus backfill grouting. "INTRODUCTION Outer space technology and exploration have reached a tipping point so that mining and mineral processing in outer space is now a certainty and not a dream. Several competing companies, worldwide, are well on the way to building spaceships to land on the Moon and eventually mine the Moon and asteroids for volatiles, rare earth metals and Helium-3. The Google Lunar XPrize offers a $30 million prize1. China has recently landed a spacecraft on the Moon. The European Space Agency, with cooperation from the United States, has landed a spacecraft, Philae, on a comet. And, Mars One is planning a one-way trip to establish a settlement of humans on Mars. How and why are the Moon and asteroids and their resources of interest to private space industry and companies? Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue? GEOLOGY OF THE MOON AND ASTEROIDS –WHY DO WE WANT TO MINE THERE? Space enterprises are actively working towards establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products, and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2. Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water, and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind. The Moon regolith contains valuable rare earth minerals, platinum-group minerals (particularly where the Moon has been impacted by asteroids), volatiles (useful for processing and habitation), Helium-3 and titanium. Almost non-existent on earth, Helium-3 is abundant and accessible on the Moon and can be used in nuclear fusion power plants, producing much more energy than fission reactions and with much less radioactive waste. One of the main reasons Helium-3 is sought after as a fusion fuel is because there are no neutrons generated as a reaction product. Governments and private companies focus on mining of Helium-3 on the Moon as a basis for their economic models. Moon Express, one of the private companies who is planning on mining on the Moon, will recover moon rocks to fund its early operations25. Subsequently, it will recover Helium-3, platinum, and rare earth metals, as it engages in surface mining operations."

Despite the recent pullback in metal and mineral prices, and the associated market adjustments, the mining industry is still facing a serious issue with the declining availability of graduate expertise. This is due to a combination of an aging workforce, retirements and retrenchments, coupled with a lack of suitably qualified graduates entering the workforce. The issue has certainly improved since 2004 when the industry picked up the rates of hiring graduate engineers and mining/mineral school enrollments picked up in response. This hiring effort has helped to cover the ?gap? years from about 1985-2000, when industry demand for graduates was particularly poor. However, the recent market pullback is likely to set back this progress, as recruitment and hiring wavers as a result of cost cutting measures and economic uncertainty. A key issue for the mining industry is how to ensure the survival and growth of relevant ?core? degree programs. Such programs include mining, metallurgical, mineral processing and geological engineering. The mining industry needs a healthy, high-level education program to ensure an adequate supply of appropriately qualified graduates for the mining industry. Two-thirds of the professionals entering the minerals industry who graduated within the past 40 years graduated prior to 1985. Since 1985, we have been living off the legacy of graduation classes from the mid-1970s and early 1980s. It is estimated that we have been producing graduates at approximately 40 to 50 percent of the sustaining rate since about 1985. Further growth in the domestic industry would increase graduate requirements significantly, and the export of U.S.-graduates to other parts of the world (as is currently occurring) also impacts the total graduate requirements.

A closed grinding circuit, typified by a ball mill-cyclone combination, is often required to treat a feed comprised of a variety of minerals of differing properties. Usually, the individual behaviour of the minerals is not assessed, a procedure which requires sizing and metal or mineralogical assaying of each size fraction. Further, sizing is frequently by screening to perhaps 325 mesh meaning that detail on the important -44 um fraction is unavailable. It is well appreciated that minerals can exhibit both individual classifying and grinding behaviour. Recognizing that cyclone classification results from differential centrifugal settling and acceleration rates, then minerals of differing specific gravity will exhibit individual mineral cyclone performance curves. If the minerals have differing grindabilities, then individual mineral rates of breakage may be expected. When treating an ore containing minerals of a range in specific gravity and/or grindability, individual mineral behaviour in the closed-circuit grind could be notable and perhaps important to the overall concentrator performance. An example is a lead-zinc ore, as shown by Kelsall et al.(1,2) This paper describes the individual mineral cyclone performance curves at sizes down to ti 10 um for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators; the Sullivan concentrator at Kimberley, British Columbia, and the Pine Point Mines concentrator at Pine Point, North West Territories, both operated by Cominco Ltd. In addition, individual mineral grinding behaviour for the four major minerals at the Sullivan concentrator is presented.

Chromite, the only ore of chromium, occurs almost exclusively in mafic-ultramafic rocks and their weathering products. However, not all kinds of mafic-ultramafic rocks are favorable hosts for possible low-grade chromite deposits. For instance, chromium-bearing basalts are not favorable because they commonly contain < 0.3% Cr2O3, and chromite is almost always less than 50 um in diameter, if it is present at all. Chromite-bearing ultramafic rocks in stratifonn and alpine complexes tend to be either ore grade (> 25% Cr203) or very low grade (< 2% Cr203); intermediate rocks are scarce. In most complexes large tonnages exist only in the < 2% Cr2O3 group and the composition of the chromite is commonly unsuitable for metallurgical use. Some nickel laterite districts contain more than 108 tons of material with 2.0% to 5.5% Cr2O3, and hence, chromium could be a byproduct of nickel in some laterite districts.

Long before the dawn of recorded history, man began to dig into the earth&apos;s crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It has been well established that prehistoric man discovered flint. "The Flintstones" were aptly named. The flintknappers of southern England and Wales still exist today in ever dwindling numbers as they seek out chunks of flint. It is a well known fact that more than half of the earth&apos;s crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica containing materials have a great many uses in modern society. However, this material is potentially extremely hazardous to our health. Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. It is obvious to us that he was describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings, that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century, B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. It was certainly described by Agricola in his "De Re Metallica" published in 1556, in which he described lung disease among hard rock miners. This publication, I&apos;m sure, is of special interest and perhaps known to many of you in the mining community. The original document was written in Latin and was translated in 1912 by two gentlemen, Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former president of the United States, who made his living before his presidency as a mining engineer.

"This study sought to identify changes in continuous mining machine (CMM) operators’ risk perception and risk behaviors as a result of adding a proximity detection system (PDS) into their environment. To accomplish this research task, 9 CMM operators from 5 locations were interviewed. Interviews were thematically analyzed for constructs including patterns in risk perception and behavior before and after PDS integration and the process of adapting to the PDS. Operators discussed standing in the red zone less than they did before using the PDS; however, they also discussed other risky decisions they made while learning how to operate their CMM with the PDS technology such as “cheating” the technology and working faster to meet production goals. The process of relearning job tasks with technology and unintended behaviors as a result of that relearning process need to be taken into account when introducing new technology into the mine environment. The study results show an in-depth view of mine workers’ perspectives and how their job tasks and environment could be or are affected when learning how to use new technology that are relevant to companies and mine operators when introducing new technology into the mine environment. INTRODUCTION Established “red zones” can help prevent striking and pinning incidents by providing guidance to continuous mining machine (CMM) operators about where they should stand and not stand while operating a CMM. Although red zones influence operator placement positions, these guidelines are not foolproof safety mechanisms. Depending on the job task and circumstances of the mine environment, a CMM operator may unintentionally or intentionally stand in a red zone. For example, CMM operators may work in close proximity to their CMM for better visual attention cues and the ability to work at a higher rate of production [1-3]. To further enhance protection and prevent collisions between vehicles and mine workers, a proximity detection system (PDS) was developed for the industry. The PDS determines an individual’s position relative to a specific piece of machinery, issues visual and/or audible warnings to the mine worker to change positions, and, if necessary, disables machine motion [4]. The introduction of new technology within other sectors has been identified as a factor that influences work decisions. Specifically, previous research demonstrates that when technology debuts there can be an initial intrinsic risk perceived among users about how the technology will interact with their current environment and behaviors; however, these ambiguities, including the possible risks and benefits, are seldom studied [5]. Some research suggests that the constant presence of technology can disrupt situation awareness and decision-making capabilities by increasing worker responsibilities and worker cognitive demands [6-8]. Further, if workers’ perceived risks both with and without technology are misjudged, unsafe decisions that result in human error and injury may be more likely [9-11]. Although these statements are provided within a broad contextual framework, they support the need to study how technology is perceived among end users in their own environment. "Coal bumps, also referred to as dynamic failure events or coal bursts (Lawson, Weakley, and Miller, 2016), continue to be a hazard in underground coal mines. While current design methods have significantly reduced the occurrence of coal bumps, they have not been completely eliminated. This paper investigates a correlation between coal compositional components, coal molecular structure, and probability of coal bumps in an effort to deepen understanding of coal behavior in an effort to reduce hazards in underground coal mines.Samples from the Penn State Office of Coal (PSOC) Department of Energy Coal Samples (DECS) were obtained for Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis using the KBr pellet method. Peaks indicative of the coal molecular structures were obtained using spectral integration software. These data, combined with published elemental data, were compared to historic bump occurrence in order to establish a possible correlation. Finally, results based on multivariate analysis of the elemental and FTIR data with bump status as the dependent variable suggest that elemental sulfur and molecular structure can be used as an indicator of bump susceptibility within the sample set considered.INTRODUCTIONThe study of coal requires consideration of multiple variables: percentages of organic and inorganic components, organic component origins, coal age, pore structure, cleat density, elemental composition, etc. Examining coal in situ increases the number of variables, such as coal depth, seam thickness, surrounding stratigraphy, and so forth. This collection of variables influences the subsequent behavior of coal simultaneously, and weighing their relative impact is a challenge for researchers. “A problem never exists in isolation; it is surrounded by other problems in space and time” (Ackoff, 1956). Having a substance such as coal that we know so much about, and yet so little, we have to ask what can be learned.An experimental study using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was undertaken to determine if the chemical structure of coal contains information which may lead to a better understanding of triggers or attributes which may, in turn, lead to an increased probability of a dynamic failure event. While a full analysis of the factors driving dynamic failure are beyond the scope of this study, it is possible that a better understanding of the chemical structure of coal will lead to an increased knowledge of its inherent behavior, including its propensity to burst."

The people within the organization then are empowered to find and to implement solutions quickly, as measured business results demonstrate in case histories of diverse mining challenges around the globe and over the decades.Urgent case for actionThe physics of mining does not change fundamentally over time, but the context in which it operates changes rapidly, periodically requiring a new face of mining. “The New Face of Mining,” which has been used as a metaphor for the campus-wide mineral resources research organization at the University of Arizona, has many facets, including societal, generational, technological, financial and environmental, but at the center, always, is humanity. The New Face of Mining is not necessarily about age, it is about people first imagining and then creating a new future for mining. The challenges facing the global industry evolve from year to year and differ in individual companies or mines at any one time.Quantified outcomes from case studies indicate that a methodology, now also offered annually in a four-day, open-enrollment leadership program tailored to the mining industry, is effective at generating breakthrough results in the mining business. Such challenges range from those with important technical components to others that are mostly social challenges. Our focus, however, is the centrality of people in aligning on and enacting the future of mining. We use the phrase New Face of Mining for leadership and ways to empower people in organizations that commonly are overlooked in the mining industry. Some of the material in this article is based on the ideas of Werner Erhard and on the book by Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan (2009), The Three Laws of Performance: Rewriting the Future of Your Organization and Your Life.At Davos, Switzerland in January 1992, nine visionary mining chief executive officers (CEO) gathered to create the Global Mining Initiative. Much has changed in the 26 years since that meeting:• The world GDP has increased from US$25.4 trillion to $75.8 trillion.• The annual number of U.S. patent applications increased from 186,000 to 629,000.• The number of websites has increased from 100 to 1 billion.• The number of academic references to artificial intelligence has climbed from more than 16,000 to more than 1 million.• The number of cell phone subscribers grew from 11 million in the United States to four billion globally."
