In case of a major fire in a tunnel between stations or ventilation shafts, if the buoyancy effect of the hot gasses is stronger than the airflow induced by the fans, the risk of backlayering could restrict the safe evacuation of people. Obstructions in the tunnel and alternate airflow paths can further reduce the air velocities past the fire. Currently there are two computer programs available to address the issue of underground fires: o "Subway Environment Simulation" (SES), Version 3.0, developed by Associated Engineers, a Joint Venture of Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc., De Leuw Cather & Co., and Kaiser Engineers, Inc. for the U.S. Department of Transportation o "MFIRE", Version 1.26, developed at Michigan Technological University for the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. As implied by its name, the SES program was developed specifically for the analysis of subway ventilation systems. It can be used to analyze the heat released into, and removed from, a subway or vehicular tunnel and to determine the effect of ventilation elements on airflows throughout the network of stations or other merging tunnels. It has a special feature allowing the user to predict the effects of a fire at any location within the subway system. Version 3.0 of the SES program is designed to be used with a "critical velocity" calculation in order to determine whether or not tunnel airflows can be controlled during a train fire emergency. The original version of the program was written in FORTRAN for mainframe computers, such as the IBM 4381. Recently ICF Kaiser Engineers has compiled a version of the SES program for PC use. The MFIRE program simulates the interdependence between a mine ventilation system, with its pertinent fans and structures, and changes in ambient conditions or a source of heat, such as a fire. It also accounts for natural ventilation. The program is written in FORTRAN 77 and compiled for 8086/8088 based microprocessors, allowing it to be run on an IBM PC or compatible computer with a 2.0 or a later version of DOS, 256K random access memory (RAM), and a text editor. This paper reports the comparative results of an application of both programs for the same network in a recent study.

The use of solid fuel in shaft furnaces to indurate iron ore pellets was originally considered a necessary evil, which the industry worked long and hard to eliminate. Since then changes have taken place in furnace design and operating practices that have led us to our suggestion that solid fuel additions could again be used. In essence, what has happened is that the developments which made it possible to operate without solid fuel have also created new operating conditions favorable to the effective use of solid fuel. Because these new conditions* were brought about in part by the desire to eliminate solid fuel and because the development was a gradual one, the industry failed to reassess its position and for years neglected the possibility of returning to solid fuel.

The last two decades have witnessed the resurgence in popularity of a century old tool for shaping laws and public policy – the ballot initiative. In recent years, anti-mining special interests have used the initiative process to secure voter approval of measures to ban modern surface mining for gold and silver. In November 1998, voters in Montana approved such a measure1 – the effects of which have been devastating to the mining industry in that state. In November 1999, anti-mining groups sought to place a nearly identical provision on the general election ballot in Colorado. They did not succeed, but the battle over mining’s future continues in the most important forum of all – the court of public opinion. The Colorado measure failed, in large part, because its proponents failed to convey a positive environmental theme. The mining industry also exercised early-on the rights available under state law for administrative and judicial review of the initiative, instead of relying upon the limited relief that would have been available had it waited until after the secretary of state approved the measure for the November election ballot. This article will summarize the ballot initiative process in Colorado and the proceedings that took place over Initiative No. 215.

A safety climate case study was carried out at a surface metal mine where investigators administered the Liberty Mutual Short Scale Safety Climate Survey to 365–368 miners to measure safety climate in consecutive years. Following the baseline safety climate survey in 2019, Foundations for Safety Leadership (FSL) training was conducted with 81 middle to upper management employees at the mine site. Investigators found statistically significant differences in the pre vs. posttraining FSL assessment scores of the middle to upper management employees who attended the training. The follow-up safety climate evaluation was compared to baseline scores and revealed no significant improvement. The overall baseline company safety climate score of 76.38 increased minimally to 76.50 (p-value = 0.616). Investigators also evaluated differences in safety climate between the company’s three major divisions (operations, maintenance, and administration). Both years administration had the highest mean score and operations had the lowest mean score. The authors attributed the statistically significant differences found among the three major divisions to various dissimilarities in their work environments.

"GENERAL PROJECT DATA The Sparvo Tunnel belongs to “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65 km highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route and to connect in a faster way Bologna and Flor-ence. It is composed of a 2,5 km twin tunnel excavated in a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas. The gradient is 2.6 % and the minimum radius is 1’400 m. The internal diameter of the precast seg-ment lining, equivalent to the final section of the tunnel, is 13.6 m. MAIN TBM SPECIFICATIONS TBM Earth Pressure Balanced S-574 “Martina”, manufactured by Herrenknecht, has a theoretical excava-tion diameter of 15’615 mm. It is equipped with a conical shield 12.2 m long and four back-up gantries. The total length of the machine is approximately 130 m, weighing approximately 4’500 tons. The total installed power is 16’800 kW. The main drive has a diameter of 8’700 mm and has a triple axis roller type bearing equipped with a labyrinth system including 4 sealing lips. The United States was the world’s largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1995. According to estimates from the US Geological Survey(USGS), boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled an estimated 1.1 Mt(1.2 million st) yielding 602 kt (663,000 st) of B2O3 for an estimated value of $462 million. This level of production exceeded 1994 revised production figures by about 9%. The United States continued to provide nearly all its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. During 1995, about 900 people worked in domestic boron mines and plants, about the same as in1994. USGS estimated total world production of boron during 1995 to be about 3 Mt (3.3 million st), yielding about 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st) of B2O3. World production in 1995 was about equal to revised 1994 levels.

Tailings dam failures have been occurring in recent years. They are considered more vulnerable than hydraulic dams due to the lack of regulations on specific design criteria, and stability requirements regarding monitoring during the construction and maintenance process. Thus, monitoring the dam is essential to know the dam's existing state and ensure its safety. One of the reasons tailings storage facilities fail is slope instability caused by moisture content. A relationship does exist between moisture content and surface strength, early detection of seepage would help to assess the physical condition of the dam. Moreover, to cover the tailings dam area in an efficient way Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are suitable because of their versatility and high-resolution data acquisition. Mounted with a high-resolution RGB camera, and thermal, or hyperspectral sensors UAVs can acquire good quality images that combined with image analysis and machine learning algorithms yield a good estimate of soil moisture.

"Current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk models and asbestos fiber counting techniques for monitoring airborne exposures treat all fibers as being equivalent and ignore the effect of dimension on toxicity. While this may have been appropriate when modern analytical methods were not available, the measurement world is now fully capable of making the appropriate distinctions. The importance of width as a determinant of carcinogenicity has been recognized for nearly 30 years within the published literature. Stanton,1 in a landmark study of a suite of fibrous materials, found that durable mineral fibers with widths less than 0.25 mm and lengths longer than 8 mm were causally associated with the induction of tumors. Pott,2 in a later study, postulated a fiber toxicity model that agreed reasonably well with the Stanton findings, but extended the concept to include varying toxicity as a function of length and width. Wylie et al.3 reanalyzed samples used by Davis et al.4 and found that tumor generation was strongly and inversely correlated with fiber width. Crump5 testified increasing fiber length was correlated with disease occurrence. Lippman6 reviewed a number of studies and suggested that mesothelioma was closely associated with long, thin fibers. Berman et al.7 published a risk model, which found that disease was correlated almost exclusively with fibers longer than 40 mm and width less than 0.25 mm. Recently, Loomis et al.8 reanalyzed textile mill samples and found that aspect ratios greater than 40:1 were highly correlated with disease. Incorporation of width into risk models has been limited by the availability of data from operating asbestos plants and, in particular, the observation of an asbestos plant for which there is no observable mesothelioma. There have been only limited studies published on the dimensions of asbestos fibers, with a few serving as the primary references in other literature.9_13 A rare opportunity to collect detailed concentration and dimensional data of airborne crocidolite from an operating asbestos-cement plant using modern analytical procedures arose, providing a chance to supplement the existing literature on airborne fiber dimensions. The asbestos-cement plant is located in the eastern end of Cochabamba, Bolivia along Highway 4. Cochabamba is a relatively large city located in the Andes Mountains, approximately 250 km southeast of the capital La Paz. The city sits in a valley that runs east-west with mountains to the north and south. The crocidolite used in the products made at this facility is mined in central Bolivia, approximately 75 km northwest of Santa Cruz. The crocidolite is a fibrous magnesioriebeckite 14 (blue asbestos). Crocidolite fibers from Bolivia were the subject of prior reports suggesting the fibers are generally longer and thicker than crocidolite from Australia or South Africa.9 At the cement plant, the run-of-mine crocidolite was first pulverized using a hammer mill and then sieved on vibratory sieves to produce fibers of limited size ranges for use in the cement. The sieved crocidolite is mixed with other components, including recycled cement product, to produce a slurry that is vacuum filtered into sheet form. The sheets are then manually molded into a corrugated shape, air dried, and sawed (using circular saws) to accepted dimensions. The sawed sheets are cured in soaking pits for 28 days before being shipped to the consumer. Prior to shipping, the sheets are finished by a light hand sanding followed (at customer request) by applying one or more coats of paint. The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative-Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) has established a Pit Lake Committee to enhance the science and understanding for the long-term management of pit lakes. Participation in this new committee is from members of federal and state agencies, industry, and academia, including numerous individuals representing 10 states. Work has begun on a pit lake literature search and review, database, classification, and sampling and monitoring procedures document. Coordination with the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) has been established. Future work will include preparing a prediction and assumption verification document, a report identifying variables upon which water quality is dependent, and an applied remediation technologies document, including an evaluation of the effects of backfilling.

During 1995, the estimated consumption of lithium minerals in the western world was 139 kt (153,000 st).This amounted to 18 kt (20,000 st) of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). Overall tonnage demand for lithium minerals increased by 10.8 kt (11,900 st) during 1995from 1994. From 1992 to 1995, overall tonnage demand has increased 62%, from 85.5 to 139 kt (94,240 st). There are four major producers of lithium minerals. Gwalia Consolidated in Western Australia is the largest producer of spodumene. It supplies high-grade spodumene concentrate, fine-spodumene concentrate, glass-grade spodumene and chemical-grade spodumene.Tantalum Mining (Tanco) of Manitoba, Canada, produces high-grade spodumene concentrate, fine-spodumene, concentrate and montebrasite. Bikita Minerals in Zimbabwe is the largest manufacturer of petalite. It supplies high-grade and container-glass petalite.

There is a misconception that mineral-project economic evaluations in the former Soviet Union are either nonexistent or very limited. This is not the case. In fact, there are at least two basic methods that can be utilized to evaluate the vast mineral resources of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Evaluation procedures are based either on a comparison to known projects, which may rely on limited available data, or on potential-profit calculations, which generally uses more extensive databases. Significant philosophical differences between these systems and those utilized in the Western world include the following: •Under the centralized-government system, the economic evaluation of a mineral project was based on artificially determined mineral prices and costs. Every ten to 12 years, prices for concentrates and metals were established by the Council of Ministers and remained unchanged until the next reconsideration of prices .

Copper mine operations consistently generate a large quantity of tailings after their concentration processing. These tailings are either piled up or stored in a dam, where both alternatives of disposal lead to environmental impacts. The dam copper tailings have a huge potential for by-product production thus improving sustainability and profitability in industrial operations. This paper describes a study aiming at producing a magnetite pellet feed as a by-product from a dam chalcopyrite flotation tailings and generating free magnetite non-magnetic rougher tailings. The chemical assay and mineralogy analysis of dam copper flotation tailings indicate low Fe grade (6.34 wt%), high SiO2 grade (63.14 wt%), low magnetite (3.6 wt%), and high iron silicates content (22.72 wt%). The complex mineralogy of these tailings leads to the need of grinding the rougher magnetite pellet feed as fine as 80% of particles smaller than 20 μm ( P80) aiming at improving magnetite liberation. The proposed process route comprises a scalping screen, low field rougher, and cleaner magnetic separations using a drum magnetic separator (80 kA/m or 1000 Gauss), followed by silicates reverse cationic flotation as a recleaner step. With this process route, it was possible to produce a high-quality magnetite pellet feed reaching 68.00 wt% of Fe, 2.13 wt% of SiO2, 0.51 wt% of Al2O3, and 95.1 wt% of magnetite. The Blaine specific surface area was 2300 cm2/ g, being in the range recommended for pelletizing (1900 up to 3000 cm2/ g). The total mass, Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, and magnetite recoveries were 2.77%, 29.71%, 0.09%, 0.12%, and 73.17%, respectively. Most of the magnetite losses, around 20% of total magnetite fed, occurred in the oversize of the scalping screen. Additionally, it generated non-magnetic rougher tailings with less than 1.0 wt% of magnetite that could be used as by-products and reduced the amount of tailings disposal in a dam. This study contributes toward the sustainability of operation, minimizing tailings disposal.

El Abra has mining concessions granting the right to exploit minerals in more than 130 km2 (32,122 acres). SCM El Abra owns “rights to occupy” the surface of these claims. The company also owns the surface rights over the process plant area and over land conveyor route. The project has procured all material easements relating to the mine area, processing facilities and access rights of way. Engineering, procurement and construction Figure 1 sets out the development and construction schedule for the project. Development is already well under way. As of early January 1996, about 70% of the project was complete and more than 80% of the capital expenditures were committed.

It seems probable that more and more minerals will be used in plastics as time goes on. This must occur because the minerals will; aid in processability, enhance the engineering properties, reduce the cost, and above all conserve large amounts of petroleum based chemicals. This paper outlines the results of a study of opinions of practicing engineers concerning the value of environmental engineering courses in a mining engineering curriculum. One hundred engineers with significant experience in mining-related engineering work were carefully chosen. Of the sixty-seven responses received, about half were from mining engineers and half from environmental engineers. The results of the survey are outlined in detail. The number and type of courses recommended by the respondents are summarized as well as the specific topics recommended for inclusion in a mining engineering curriculum. The survey form also asked for the stages in the mine life when environmental experts were needed and the percentage of environmental engineering performed by outside experts for many mining-related environmental tasks. The results of this line of questions are provided. Finally, the paper offers a comparison of the results for environmental engineers and mining engineers and analyzes the differences.

"Uncertainty exists in ultimate-pit limits due to geologic variation and unpredictable economic landscapes. In this work, we show how this uncertainty affects the ultimate pit and how it can be analyzed to improve the mine planning process. A stochastic framework using geostatistical simulation and parametric analysis was used to model the effects of geologic and economic variations on ultimate-pit limits and overall project economics. This analysis was made possible by a new pit optimization implementation that can be automated and set up to calculate ultimate pits for hundreds of different scenarios in a matter of hours. Quantifying ultimate-pit uncertainty early in the mine planning process allows mining engineers to make informed decisions regarding infrastructure placement and to mitigate the possibility of incurring substantial costs to relocate critical mine facilities. Resumen ¦ Existen dudas sobre los límites del pit final por causa de la variación geológica y lo impredecible de los paisajes económicos. En este trabajo les mostramos como esta incertidumbre afecta el pit final y como puede ser analizada para mejorar el proceso de planificación de la mina. Se usó un marco estocástico con simulación geoestadística de análisis paramétrico con el fin de poder hace la modelación de los efectos de las variaciones geológicas y económicas en los límites de pit finales y proyectos económicos en general. Este análisis fue posible gracias a una nueva implementación de optimización de pits que puede ser automatizada y configurada para calcular pits finales para cientos de escenarios diferentes en cuestión de horas. Four companies ? H.C. Spinks Clay Co., Inc., Imerys, Old Hickory Clay Co., and Unimin Corp. ? mined ball clay in four states in 2013. On the basis of preliminary data, production was 1 Mt (1.1 million st) with an estimated value of $47 million. Production increased by 3 percent in tonnage from 973 kt (1.1 million st) with a value of $45.1 million in 2012. Tennessee was the leading producer accounting for 64 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 67 percent of total ball clay production was airfloat, 22 percent was crude or shredded and 11 percent was water-slurried.

Those involved in the mining and minerals industry really are an optimistic bunch. Faced with an economic downturn that has spread across the globe ? one, some say, that crept up on everyone ? mining professionals remain hopeful that the industry will return. An example of that optimism is the attendance at two of the industry?s key conferences and exhibitions. In February, more than 4,200 people attended the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Denver, CO. And a week later, in Toronto, Ontario, more than 18,000 were on hand for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada?s (PDAC) meeting. Both are respectable numbers and run contrary to meeting attendance figures during previous downturns when attendance and the numbers of exhibitors fell off significantly. Like other downturns, this most recent one has resulted in massive layoffs, curtailments of production and outright closures. Exploration has been hard hit and many junior mining and exploration companies will either disappear or be swallowed up by others. Gold is its usual self The PDAC generally attracts the gold mining and exploration sectors. So that might explain some of the optimism at the meeting. Unlike base metals and construction materials, gold, not surprisingly, is doing well. And most of the companies in the Investors Exchange at PDAC were involved with gold. While the balance sheets for most base metals companies look bad, gold companies appear to be not as hard hit. Gold is doing what it usually does during a downturn ? act as a safe haven while the value of other assets collapse worldwide. Governments around the world are preparing to pour trillions of dollars in an attempt to resuscitate their economies. This will likely lead to inflation, some experts at the PDAC convention said, which will be good for gold. And gold mining companies are also benefiting from lower production costs. The result is that some gold watchers believe gold could reach $64/g ($2,000/oz) at some point.

Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 m.y. ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. 3 A total of more than 200 km of silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.5 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later +I2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma or connate water or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury has not been identified. Later oxidation of the sulfide minerals and redistribution of the supergene minerals corderoite, several mercury nitro-oxychlorides, marcasite, iron, and titanium oxides in the sedimentary rocks account for most of the newly discovered ore body at Cordero.

Investigations of underground coal gasification (UCG) have been actively pursued by the U.S. Department of Energy since the early 1970s; the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) conducted its first field experiment in 1976. In conjunction with field and laboratory studies of the process of recovering energy in the form of combustible gases from the burning of coal deposits in situ, an extensive environmental program has been conducted at LLNL under the auspices of both the U.S Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This program has focused on groundwater contamination and ground surface subsidence caused by UCG. The material presented in this paper is a summary of results from the environmental studies of UCG activities conducted by LLNL as described by Mead, et al. (1981) and supplemented by the author's experience with this program in 1980 and 1981. The following sections describe specific groundwater contamination and surf ace subsidence problems encountered during field experiments in northeastern Wyoming, and will discuss implications of preliminary findings from geohydrological investigations of a site in southwestern Washington. Finally, possible environmental control technologies that are most likely to be effective in mitigating environmental impacts are discussed.
