"The extreme depths and consequent expense of drilling and sampling the gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand Basin have resulted in limited data being available for estimation of grade ahead of the mining face. There is, however, a wealth of information from mined-out areas of these deposits. This estimation challenge resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation.AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) utilizes a technique termed macro cokriging (MCK), which allows for the integration of the limited advanced borehole data with the large chip sample data-sets from the previously mined-out areas by adopting a Bayesian geostatistical approach. The MCK process, in short, is the estimation of mixed support size data together with the application of four-parameter distribution models.The gold value estimation for the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) on the AGA TauTona Mine is used in this paper as a case study of the process and to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique through production reconciliation. The current method has been proven over the last 20 years and is now an established part of the Mineral Resource evaluation process within AGA.IntroductionOwing to the extreme depths of the goldbearing reefs at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Witwatersrand operations and the prohibitive expense and time involved in drilling boreholes to the required depth, only limited drilling and sampling data is available ahead of the mining face. Sampling in a continuous flotation plant is always a challenge as these plants are meant for production and not research work. The continuous flotation operation used in this work produced three sets of data: the first was based on overall plant performance, done by sampling the feed, concentrate, and tails; the second was based on the roughers row cell-by-cell; the third set of results came from the cleaners/recleaners row cell-by-cell. The highest recovery results in all sets of data obtained lie in the particle size ranges of 40 μm and 100 μm, which is in agreement with results by other researchers in the same field. King’s theoretical (model) recovery proved to be able to fit the experimental data but there is still room for improvement as the sum of squared error ranged between 400– 1200. Data obtained in continuous flotation operation could be used with batch flotation test-work to characterize scale-up of flotation cells.

This paper explores how to apply system dynamics principles to surface mining problems towards understanding the consequences of mining efficiencies. Some simulation examples related to machine and people performance have been used to demonstrate systems engineering concepts to mining engineers. The simulation tool used is Vensim, which is widely used in industrial engineering applicable to systems thinking, and systems dynamics. The science and mathematics behind the system dynamics as well as benefits and typical challenges are discussed to explore the applicability to mining problems. The benefit of having one less drill is easily quantifiable with the developed model which is one of many other measurable benefits, using the developed model. Some of the benefits of the improved quality of drill holes are not fully quantified as this depends on the mine specific inputs. There are examples of quantifying this in the other industries using system dynamics tools.

"In open pit dozer bulk push operations, the material left resting against the highwall after blasting poses an issue. This is because dozers cannot physically get in behind the waste to begin the bulk pushing process. Instead, an excavator can be used to side-cast this waste for the dozers to access. An alternative technique is to have the dozers ‘side-cut’ the material, which involves the dozers running parallel to the wall, digging out the material, and eventually rotating their blades to begin bulk pushing. Industry practices suggest the latter technique is less productive and economical than using an excavator. However, such excavator sidecasting ‘economic viability’ assumes that smaller/ancillary type excavators are used (i.e. less than 23 m3 bucket capacity). So, what happens if some mine sites are restricted to using relatively larger excavators (> 23 m3 bucket) that are preferred for higher priority digging tasks? When can they avoid using their excavator? This paper explores multiple scenarios that have been designed and developed to simulate data results, which identify conditions in which the dozer side-cutting technique becomes more economically viable than excavator side-casting in terms of decreased unit cost per loose cubic metre. IntroductionOptimizing the cost of waste removal operations is important for the profitability of opencast coal mines. In the past decade, dozer bulk pushing has emerged and taken over from traditional waste removal operations such as dragline and truck-and-shovel methods at various sites around the world (Beatty, 1994). In a typical bulk push operation, once the bench has been blasted, waste is left resting against the highwall, which can either be cleared using a loading unit or by having the dozers ‘side-cut’ the highwall.Dozers perform most effectively when slot dozing side-by-side, perpendicular to the highwall. However, when dozers are required to remove material off the highwall, they must push parallel to the highwall, rather than perpendicular, hence ‘side-cutting’ the material to ensure a clean face. While dozer sidecutting is possible, it has been found that the majority of mine sites use a loading unit in this situation to avoid dozer inefficiency. Other perceived issues with dozer side-cutting include higher maintenance requirements and safety risks to dozer operators working in close proximity to the highwall."

Badie, as he was known to all, will be missed by his many friends and colleagues, and will be remembered by al who knew him as a warm-hearted person who was totally dedicated to the safety and health of the workers in the mining industry.

Carbon-concentration Meter The latest of these, the ultrasound-based carbon concentration meter, was developed by Mintek with original sponsorship by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, and is now being manufactured and marketed worldwide by Debex Electronics in Johannesburg. Testing of detonators* The Chief Mining Engineer has asked the South African Bureau of Standards to monitor locally manufactured, as well as imported, detonators. This could ensure greater safety in fiery mines.

The mechanism of the flow of tailings slurry is examined, and a mathematical model is derived to describe the flow. Predictions based on the model are then compared with the flow that actually occurred near the shaft at Bafokeng after the No. I tailings dam had failed. The predictions are found to be of acceptable accuracy.

The theory of firing of electric detonators is developed insofar as it affects the design of blasting circuits. Practical values for the firing conditions suited to detonators of local manufacture are tabulated. The design principles of blasting circuits are outlined. This information can be used by mine management to ensure that electric blasting will be done efficiently and economically.
