Discussion: T. L. Gibbs,* (Honorary Vice-President and Fellow): In terms of the Pneumoconiosis Compensation Act of 1962, a Pneumoconiosis Risk Committee was established whose function it is to estimate (by whatever means the committee deems fit) in respect of every controlled mine the pneumoconiosis risk to which persons employed in a dusty atmosphere at that mine are exposed. In estimating such risk the committee may estimate different risks in respect of individual mines or parts of mines or classes or groups of mines or occupations or localities at mines. The pneumoconiosis risk may be reviewed and re-estimated at any time. The Act provides further that the General Council for Pneumoconiosis Compensation shall apportion the levy imposed on owners of controlled mines on the basis of the pneumoconiosis risk determined by the risk committee and the numbers of persons employed in a dusty atmosphere. The task of the risk committee is a most responsible one and also a very difficult and complex one in view of the many different types of mines, rock formations, dust conditions, etc. Quite obviously, comparisons between mines cannot be made on dust concentrations alone as different mineral dusts have different toxicity or pneumoconiosis response factors. However, with its present knowledge, the risk committee is satisfied that the risk at mines, other than coal mines, is related to the mean quartz-equivalent dust concentration to which persons are exposed and the estimation of risks is based on this relationship. From the above, it will be clear that the work done by Dr du Toit on the problem of basing the current rate of levies to provide for pneumoconiosis compensation on the current dust hazard at mines has been of immense value to the risk committee. Up to now the risk committee has not been able to obtain complete and accurate information on the dust exposure of persons at all mines - and, in fact, it is doubtful whether it will be economic or practicable to obtain this in the foreseeable future - but reasonable assessments have been possible from routine dust sampling in some cases and from periodic comprehensive dust surveys in others. As a temporary measure the risks of some mines were estimated initially on a group basis relating to average dust conditions and the type of rock and mineral mined, but as more information became available, differentiation between individual mines became possible. It is the aim of the risk committee to eventually apply such a differentiation in all cases and to ensure that within the bounds of practicability each mine pays for its risk and for its risk only. In this connection, the relationship between the levies and the amounts actually paid out in compensation are examined regularly. In conclusion, I wish to add my congratulations to the author on his excellent paper. His findings will assist materially in the just administration of that very important piece of beneficial legislation, the Pneumoconiosis Compensation Act. G. K. Sluis Cremer MD (Visitor): Dr du Toit has made a valiant attempt to relate dust hazard and the rate of collecting funds for the purpose of paying compensation for Pneumoconiosis. In doing so he has had to make a number of assumptious, some of which touch on the medical aspects of pneumoconiosis. It is worth discussing whether these assumptions are justifiable. Pneumoconiosis is defined in our Pneumoconiosis Act as permanent disease of the cardio-respiratory organs which is caused by the inhalation of mineral dust. To a non-medical person this definition has probably a clear cut meaning. The doctors however have to deal with such conditions as silicosis and asbestosis where there is a well defined dose response relationship to the inhalation of quartz and asbestos respectively and on the other hand chronic bronchitis where the relationship to dust inhalation is poorly defined and where certainly no clear dose response relationship has emerged after many investigations in this country and overseas. Nevertheless since 1953 about half of our certifications for Pneumoconiosis are on the grounds of chronic bronchitis i.e. the X-rays show no evidence of silicosis, asbestosis or other relevant disease. This fact must affect Dr du Toit's computations. The next assumption we should examine is the manner in which toxicity factors have been allocated to the various mineral species. These allocations have in part been based on a restricted number of animal experiments carried out overseas but mostly in South Africa by Webster at the Pneumoconiosis Research Unit. To extrapolate the findings in a relatively small number of animal experiments to the expected reactious in man is a notoriously dangerous exercise. Furthermore the bracketing together of all silicates (except asbestos) and the insoluble metal oxides is entirely unacceptable. Talc (a hydrated silicate of magnesium) and muscovite mica (a silicate of aluminium and potassium) cause pneumoconiosis in their own right. On the other hand

Since 1997, KIVCETTM flash smelting technology has been utilized for the treatment of zinc plant residues and lead concentrates. Trail Operations’ furnace uses four water-cooled jackets for bullion tapping. This paper provides an overview of KIVCET bullion tapping for the past 16 years, and discusses successes and challenges encountered with respect to operations, training, and monitoring.

MacGillivray Mr President and gentlemen, I would like to congratulate the authors on presenting a most interesting paper on a very important subject. After several attempts at finding suitable reserves to extend the life of Welgedacht Exploration Company's Utrecht Colliery a block of coal rights was acquired south west of the town of Utrecht. A study of these reserves showed that they would enable a satisfactory return on capital invested to be achieved. It was decided therefore to open up what is now called the Zimbutu section of Welgedacht Exploration Company, to produce 41 000 metric tons of coal per month. The decision to open this section was taken in August, 1968 and due to certain allocation requirements it was necessary to bring it into production by the 1st of January, 1970. Fortunately a fair amount of statistical data had been collected prior to August, 1968 from the old Utrecht Colliery in anticipation of opening a mine and a fairly detailed rechnical report had been prepared. As a result the dead line was only missed by four days. Main features of the Design A feasibility study was carried out on three possible shaft positions and the final position was selected from these three on economic grounds. As the coal seam at the selected shaft position was only 21 metres below the surface it was decided to sink two twin incline shafts to enable rapid establishment of through ventilation and alternative hauling arrangements for quick development. This also allowed the final vertical ventilation shaft to be placed at some distance away to avoid the nuisance of fan noise. Second outlet requirements are also very well met by these twin inclines. Again on the basis of economics and also due to the uncertainty of roof conditions it was decided to use hand loading methods underground. However, to allow for future possible conversion to mechanised loading, should this become economical through rising wages, a conveyor belt was installed in the hauling shaft. This conveyor belt is fed from an endless rope haulage in the east companion by means of tipplers, a bin and a feeder. The main development heading was left clear for the future installation of a conveyor belt which would afford easy conversion to mechanisation.

The art of diamond beneficiation has given way to the application of scientific process, but at considerable capital expenditure. The shift in beneficiation methodologies has been disruptive to the traditional skills set of the industry, but evolutionary change continues and has been beneficial to the quality of the final product.

?Rare earths ?will not be bargaining instruments?? was stated in a headline in China Daily of 29 October 2010. The Chinese government is trying to fend off the persistent accusations from Japan, the USA, and Europe that it is manipulating the supply of these so called ?critical? metals to gain political and economic advantages. The critics maintain that China has taken the rest of the world hostage by controlling 97% of the resources of rare earths. These elements are crucial in a number of high-tech applications. They are not impossible to substitute, but difficult to do so effectively. The name ?rare earth? is a misnomer, as even the least abundant is 200 times more common in the Earth?s crust than gold. They are, however, difficult to find in economic concentrations. The Chinese near-monopoly over the rare earths, together with China?s scramble for other resources in Australia, Africa, and elsewhere around the world, is seen as an example of a Chinese strategy to take control of vital metal resources. The Chinese are also accused of using unfair and sometimes illegal business practices in this fight for resources. Practices which, critics claim, put the Chinese interests above the interests of the host countries, in particular in Africa.

The Decar Nickel District is a greenfield discovery by FPX Nickel Corp., of nickel mineralisation located in central British Columbia (BC), Canada. The Baptiste deposit is part of the Decar Nickel District and is a unique deposit containing a nickel-iron alloy mineral called awaruite, with over 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource grading 0.12% Davis Tube Recoverable (DTR) nickel. This deposit represents a significant nickel resource. Awaruite is a high density and ferromagnetic mineral, which could be recovered, along with magnetite that is also present in the samples, using magnetic separation. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the properties of the awaruite and its metallurgical response. This information is imperative for the set-up of the variables involved in its concentration. The aim of this paper is to show and discuss the effect of magnetic field strength for the recovery of nickel from Baptiste deposit samples. Magnetic separation at bench and pilot scale with different magnetic field strengths is evaluated as a concentration method for awaruite. Mineralogical information is provided to support the results and also to briefly assess the variability of DTR nickel within the deposit. The Baptiste deposit is unique and will benefit from a sound scientific understanding of the process solution as well as other ongoing work. If successful, the outcome will lead to the development of a mine. With greater than 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource, the mine would represent a significant new source of nickel globally. "Accurate delineation of the contact between a kimberlite pipe and country rock at production level depths is a challenge due to limited geological data. Geological information is obtained from widely spaced diamond core boreholes which are drilled either from surface or from higher mining levels within the pipe. Kimberlite pipe/country rock contacts are notoriously irregular and variable, further reducing the confidence in contact positions defined by the drill-holes. At Finsch Diamond Mine (FDM), the opportunity arose to further improve the confidence in the contact positions relative to the planned slot (end) positions of each sublevel cave tunnel during the development stage of these tunnels. As a result, the accuracy of the 3D geological model has improved.The use of diamond drill core for this purpose is expensive due to site establishment requirements. The lengthy time taken during site establishment also delays the development of tunnels and support cycles, thereby extending the completion dates. FDM has reduced delays during development by adopting percussion drilling, in conjunction with gamma ray logging. The S36 drill rig is mounted on a moveable platform and does not require a costly and lengthy site establishment. The holes are generally drilled (0°/flat) on grade elevation, and these holes could also be drilled from the rim tunnels (developed in waste) into the kimberlite pipe. A single-boom production drill rig is normally used to drill holes about 20 m in length.On completion of the contact delineation drilling, gamma logging of the holes is conducted using the GeoVista geophysical sonde (or probe) to log the natural gamma signature of the dolomite/ kimberlite contact. The advantage of this tool is that the readings are continuous within centimetre intervals, and due to contrasting characteristics between kimberlite (rich in clay minerals) and dolomite, the contact position can be determined accurately. The better definition of contact positions also adds value to tunnel stopping distance in terms of developing the tunnel’s slot at the optimum distance from the contact (easier blasting of longhole rings, avoidance of contact overbreak and premature waste ingress, and other matters relating to extraction of ore from these tunnels). This method is highly successful and has reduced development costs (on-time completion), improved definition of the pipe’s contact position for geological modelling, improved blast design, and mitigated early waste ingress by maintaining the contact’s integrity."

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should be of sufficient high standard and contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Their publication should be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to mining and industry. Authors must realize that because a mine shaft is new or the mine itself is newly established, this in itself does not justify a paper unless significantly new techniques or processes were involved in the opening-up procedure. A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of less well chosen material. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Papers should be submitted at least three months prior to the intended date of presentation. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of foolscap paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 11/2 inches, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Galley proofs are sent to the authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. Generally: Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should be of sufficient high standard and contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Their publication should be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to mining and industry. Authors must realize that because a mine shaft is new or the mine itself is newly established, this in itself does not justify a paper unless significantly new techniques or processes were involved in the opening-up procedure. A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of less well chosen material. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Papers should be submitted at least three months prior to the intended date of presentation. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of foolscap paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 11-inches, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Galley proofs are sent to the authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, August 14th, 1974. Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg (President) was in the Chair. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining. There are a number of reasons for this substantial change. There was a loss on realization of investments compared with a substantial surplus in recent years. The publication of the Journal once again resulted in a large loss in spite of a generous subvention of R2,000 from the Department of Cultural Affairs and other assistance amounting to R750. The revenue from sales of publications was down considerably. This is a figure which fluctuates considerably from year to year. The secretarial fee was considerably higher than previously. Due to pressure of work it was necessary for the Secretary to relinquish his duties with the Institute of Land Surveyors and, therefore, for this Institute to assume the additional staff costs involved. Finally there was unusual expenditure on the 75th Anniversary celebrations. There was a pleasing increase in revenue from subscriptions, due to the steadily increasing membership, but this was quite inadequate to cover the substantial increases in expenditure and losses in revenue mentioned above. The changes that have been effected in the arrangements for the publication of the Journal have been mentioned elsewhere in this report. It is expected that these will bring about substantial financial benefits in the long term. In making this change it will conform to more general practice today in regard to publications and this should effect certain economies and facilitate selling of advertising space. It has been arranged that in future the publication of the Journal, including advertisement sales, will be handled by Kelvin Publications (Pty.) Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institutes. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of income over expenditure of R5 051 compared with an excess of expenditure over income last year of R4 608. This major reversal of fortunes is due in the first instance, of course, to the increased subscriptions. There were, however, other important contributors, particularly sales of the Proceedings of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and profits on the operation of symposia and colloquia. It would appear from a study of the accounts that there has been a substantial drop in expenditure on secretarial fees. In actual fact, however, our total expenditure on secretarial fees was higher. A portion of this expenditure was charged against the administration of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and, in addition, the charge against the Journal accounts for secretarial fees was increased. It will be recalled that in last year's annual report it was mentioned that subsequent to the new arrangement for publication of the Journal, the expected improvement in the finances of the Journal had been slow in materialising. After a total period of 18 months there was still no sign of improvement and it was accordingly decided to end the arrangement. As a result, the drain on the finances of the Institute was considerably lessened in the second half of the year. During the course of the year Council became concerned about the rapid depletion of our accumulated funds and gave careful and detailed attention to all aspects of the Institute's financial affairs. Particular attention was given to: 1. The fact that the Institute does not have a solid financial backing and must appeal for funds every time any special event such as a symposium is held. 2. The responsibilities of the Institute to the profession and the community, with particular reference to the desirability of establishing Institute bursaries and participating in other educational activities. 3. The rapidly rising cost of living. 4. The immediate financial position of the Institute. 5. The rapidly increasing cost of publishing the Journal due to the increasing number of papers available. In the meantime the immediate financial position of the Institute has improved but as this is due largely to non-recurring or irregular items of revenue, it should not be given undue weight. After careful consideration it was decided that an appeal should be made to industry for financial assistance, which would be used to cover the cost of symposia and other unusual expenditure and also, if possible, to build up the capital resources of the Institute so that there is a solid foundation for the future. Before appealing to industry, Council wished to be quite certain that there could be no criticism of the Institute for not having done our best in a personal capacity. Furthermore, Council examined many comparative statistics, including those circulated to members, which showed that, while expenditure per member has risen at an average annual rate of 7,5% over the last fifteen years, subscription revenue per member has risen at only 3,4% per annum. It was with this background that your Council decided to raise the subscriptions. Initial approaches have been made to the big mining groups and there has been a very generous response, although the details of how financial assistance will be provided have not yet been worked out. It seems likely that some form of affiliated company membership will be the most suitable method of achieving this. When these details have been fixed, it is the intention to extend the appeal to all corners of the mining industry as well as manufacturing and metallurgical industries. It is believed that these measures will ensure that the finances of the Institute are placed on a firm foundation on which the expanding activities can be planned. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R73 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 411. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year fron R6 540 to R9 160. The market value is now almost exactly the same as the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to R23 010 compared with R17 959 a year ago.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS Given by Mr J. K. E. DOUGLAS, M.Se. (Eng.) (Rand) SYNOPSIS Lime is the most widely used and the cheapest chemical alkali known to man and virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture. Its use goes back to the earliest days of man and many ancient buildings and writings bear testimony to this. The manufacture of lime involves quarrying, crushing and screening of limestone and the burning of the sized stone in kilns of which there are several types. The earliest kilns were of very crude design and only in comparatively recent times have large capacity, automated and scientifically controlled kilns been developed. The history of the South African lime industry is largely that of the three main lime companies and their story is briefly told. No other material used in industry has a greater diversity of uses or more varied functions and lime has applications in most South African industries. The main applications are in the production of gold and uranium, iron, steel and ferrochrome, carbide, sugar and paper and for water treatment, agriculture and building. The Republic is well endowed with high quality limestone and the conclusion is drawn that many other minerals will have been exhausted before we run out of limestone with which to process them. The expansion of the lime industry has in the past kept pace with the requirements of industry and the future demand is expected to grow in parallel with the growth of these industries. Since the war this growth has been phenomenal and with our expanding populations and abundance of raw materials it should continue in the years ahead. Limiting factors are the shortage of skilled labour and the distance from export markets. Confidence is expressed that the challenges of the future will be met and that the lime industry will continue to make an important contribution to the growth and prosperity of South Africa. INTRODUCTION Lime, gentlemen, is known to all of you. Like myself, most of you have undoubtedly found it to be, on the appropriate occasion, a most pleasant flavouring for gin. But this lime, or rather its juice, was in earlier days more than just a flavouring. In the days of sail it was vital to the health of sailors as a deterrant against the scourge of all sea-going men-scurvy. It thus played a small but important role in the opening-up of trade routes around the world on which was based the original wealth of many of today's more advanced nations. I propose to address you on the subject of lime this evening, not the citrus variety I have just mentioned, but the most widely-used and cheapest alkali known to man, which, largely unsung, plays an even more vital part in modern industry than did its namesake in the development of inter-continental trade. In the time at my disposal, I propose to tell you something of the history, geology and technology of lime manufacture. Then I will briefly sketch for you the development of this industry in South Africa and indicate the role it plays in supplying the requirements of many of our important industries. Finally we will attempt to look into the future. The importance of this chemical alkali to our modern civilization is seldom fully appreciated-virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture, either directly or indirectly. It is one of those basic materials, along with iron, coal, sulphur, salt and petroleum without which industry and, in fact, our modern way of living could not exist. Fortunately, nature has endowed the world with a plentiful supply of the limestone from which lime is derived and most countries have deposits adequate for their requirements. As a result, not only has there been little trade in lime products between countries but in the past the widespread occurrences of limestone have set a pattern of numerous small plants each serving a limited area. These plants were generally crude affairs incapable of producing a quality product. It is not surprising that, in an industry comprised of small producers with limited financial resources and in fierce competition with each other, there was little interchange of information. Technological development was therefore slow and the industry tended to be regarded as a backyard operation. Its popularity was not enhanced by the fact that lime is difficult and unpleasant to handle if proper facilities are not provided. In recent years the lime industry has undergone very radical changes to meet the more exacting requirements of today's more sophisticated consumers. Only since the war have the larger companies emerged with proper management, highly mechanized plants and a scientific approach. HISTORY Lime was one of the first chemical reagents used by man and consequently lime burning is one of the oldest of the chemical industries. The use of limestone dates back to the stone age when primitive man used limestone to build fireplaces, construct shelters and make crude tools and weapons. It is probable that lime was first discovered by him when the stone in these fireplaces disintegrated to a white powder which he could use for decorative purposes. The first recorded use of limestone was when huge blocks of limestone were used to build the pyramids of Egypt in 4,000 to 2,000 RC. It was not long after this that the beauty of marble, which is in fact a limestone, came to be appreciated and it found wide application in sculpturing and for decorative wall construction. Originally lime, mixed with sand, was used mainly as a mortar for building purposes, the earliest record of its use for chemical purposes being in 350 B.C. in a report of the wreck near Marseilles of a ship carrying a cargo of linen and lime 'for its bleaching'1. Cato mentioned the burning of lime kilns in 184 B.C. and the Romans made extensive use of both limestone and lime for highway construction. Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterised by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25 %-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18 %-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating cost, offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously de-bottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. Optimization of current control systems, proper maintenance and efficient training of personnel are recommendations made to control the amount of dust that underground employees are exposed to on a daily basis in the coal mining industry. This dissertation forms as part of Sasol Mining?s commitment to protect the health and safety of their employees by suppressing and controlling dust at their mines. This study aims to understand the relationship among mining processes, exposure to dust and dust suppression control measures. The research phase of the project was done at the Sasol Mining Secunda complex where underground visits were undertaken to investigate current control systems and also new systems that are being implemented by Sasol Mining. This work was important because it helped determine the sources of dust underground and also to identify the shortcomings of current control systems and to test the efficiencies of the new systems implemented at Sasol Mining. The most important result of the research work was the identification of which underground operators were exposed the most to dust as this assisted in designing a dust suppression system for the areas where these operators worked. The main conclusions of this study are that the current control systems are sufficient for controlling dust and ensuring dust compliance if they are used efficiently and maintained properly.

"The smelter at Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, located in Sudbury, Ontario, operates a single electric AC furnace. This furnace treats nickel sulphide concentrates produced by Glencore and third-party feeds and as such its performance is key to the company’s nickel supply chain. Currently the plant has two shutdowns per year in order to carry out significant repairs on matte tap-holes.Improved monitoring systems that enable better prediction of tap-hole wear have been a continued focus. The electric furnace is an essential piece of the smelter flow sheet requiring the need for planned tap-hole maintenance along with robust systems for management according to to this plan.The ability to meet our goal of zero harm is ensuring that safe practices are in place. Detailed procedures and cool-down practices have been implemented to ensure that required matte chemistry and temperature criteria can be met during the period leading into a shutdown for tapblock maintenance.A significant repair of the electric furnace will take place in 2015. During this rebuild, the sidewalls and matte endwall will be replaced. There is work underway to improve wall and matte end performance in an attempt to extend the time between rebuilds. This paper will review the approach taken towards this end."

The successful commissioning of the Cerro Verde project in Peru at the end of 2006 marked the culmination of the efforts of many in the industry over many years to have high pressure grinding roll technology recognized and accepted as a legitimate alternative to the conventional approach to large-scale hard rock comminution circuit design. Other hard-rock projects that have recently adopted HPGR include Freeport (Indonesia), Boddington (Australia) and Amplats Potgietersrus (South Africa). With the increasing acceptance of this technology, the need for technical presentations and articles exhorting the industry to adapt has diminished somewhat, and it is considered appropriate now to shift the emphasis to the provision of information for those considering embracing change. This article endeavours to answer frequently asked questions on the subject of high pressure grinding roll technology, with particular reference to its application in the hard rock minerals processing sector.
