Dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) sorting is a recent development in the range of sensor-based sorting technologies available today. DE-XRT is particularly suitable for dry coarse coal beneficiation in the size range -120 mm +12 mm. In this paper, we describe the technology and show the results of a number of test runs conducted on different types of coal from the USA and South Africa. The results have shown that DE-XRT is an effective technology not only for deshaling of coal and removing pyritic sulphur but also for separating coal and torbanite. The use of dry deshaling methods will be more important as water availability becomes a greater concern. DE-XRT is one such technology which will be incorporated in future dry coal processing plants.

Amandelbult Mine is currently undertaking a trial to mechanise the mining of the UG2 reef through the introduction of room and pillar mining. As part of the trial, a system of managing the control of the hanging wall has been introduced, based on systems and technology that are proving successful in the nearby coal mining industry. The principal features are the use of a high bond strength, stiff bolting system which can be easily installed to a high standard, and a range of in situ tests and measurements to optimise the level of support installed to control the movement of the hanging wall. The rock bolt system and the measurements and tests described are new to the platinum mining industry. The paper describes these systems and their adaptation and application to hard rock mining. La Mine d’Amandelbult est actuellement dans des essais en vue de mécaniser l’extraction dans la veine UG2 grâce à l’introduction d’une exploitation par chambres et piliers. Dans le cadre de ces essais, un système de gestion de la paroi suspendue a été introduit, base sur des systèmes et une technologie qui prouvent donner de bons résultats dans l’industrie voisine d’extraction de la houille. Les caractéristiques principales sont l’utilisation d’un système de verrouillage raide et à forte adhérence qui peut être installé à un haut niveau de qualité et une gamme d’essais et de mesures in situ pour optimiser le niveau de soutien installé pour contrôler le mouvement de la paroi suspendue. Le système de verrouillage de la roche ainsi que les mesures et les essais décrits sont une nouveauté dans l’industrie minière du platine. La communication décrit ces systèmes ainsi que leur adaptation et leur application à l’exploitation minière en roche dure. In the 21st century, dynamic, accurate digital 3-D geological models are essential to the pursuit of safe, efficient and profitable mining. This is particularly true for the deep-level underground mines in South Africa. The Sirovision® solution is a collaboration project between the Australian CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Datamine Software Ltd. and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd (AGA). The purpose of the project is to provide a fully integrated digital rock face imaging, geological mapping and modelling system for the AGA gold mining operations. The CSIRO-developed Sirovision® Stereo Camera Rig (SCR) consists of two digital cameras, alighting system, a laser guidance system and image processing software. The imaging system works on the principles of photogrammetry, i.e. overlaying of two 2-D images with a central focus point, with mathematical algorithms extracting 3-D information from the 2-D image pair. The output from matching several image pairs is a computer-generated, full 3-D, virtual copy of the mining excavation. The image resolution and relief ares of sufficient quality to distinguish different rock types and structural contacts. Functionality within Datamine Studio3 is used to add geological intelligence to the 3-D images provided by Sirovision®. The geologist identifies and ?draws? lines representing geological features directly onto the image. By utilizing the inherent ?topography? of the 3-D image, the software is able to convert the lines into 3-D surfaces, ready for use in the 3-D geological model. Subsequent to promising underground test results from AGA?s Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) in Australia and other mining operations worldwide, it was decided to test the Sirovision® system in the South African deep-level gold mines. The first underground tests at Moab Khotsong Mine began in January 2009. The objectives of these tests entailed the capturing of 3-D images of selected development ends, mapping of geological features onto the 3-D images and integration of the mapping data with the 3-D geological model. Some downsides have cropped up during the feasibility testing, related to practicality of the SCR for acquisition of 3-Dimagery in the deep-level underground operating environment. These constraints will have to be addressed prior to operational implementation. Facing such difficulties is not unusual when attempting to implement new technology in such a challenging working environment and testwork is still in progress at the mine in order to prove the concept of using this technology in a Witwatersrand underground gold mine. The great advantage of the Sirovision® solution is that it offers the geologist the opportunity to work remotely on a 3-D virtual copy of a mining excavation, without the heat, humidity, hazards and time constraints associated with physical mapping in an underground workplace.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of grain size distribution control of the raw material mixture on the permeability of the green sinter bed and the properties of the produced sinter. This was achieved by evaluating the granulation characteristics of the sinter mixture (moisture content, granulation time and mean granule diameter) in terms of its green bed permeability, and evaluating the productivity of the sinter bed, the coke rate, tumble index (TI), abrasion index (AI), reduction disintegration index(RDI) and reducibility (RI) of the produced sinter. The raw sinter mixtures contained combinations of Thabazimbi iron ore, Sishen iron ore, coke, lime and return fines. The grain size distributions were controlled by removing the ?0.5 mm size fractions of the return fines and coke, and the ?1 mm size fraction of lime. Of the examined mixtures, a mixture of 20 mass% Thabazimbi iron ore, 80 mass% Sishen iron ore and fluxes where the coke, lime and return fines were all sized had the highest granulation effectiveness and permeability. The sintering properties of the mixtures in which the grain size distributions were controlled, were very similar for all the mixtures, but superior to the base case mixture in which the grain size distribution was not controlled. Drilling exploration over the Wesizwe Platinum Limited?s Pilanesberg Project has identified the Merensky Reef at depths varying from 594 m to 1 552 m depth. Merensky Reef thickness varies from 0.05 m to 3.63 m and contains PGE(4) mineralization above a cut-off grade of 1.0 g/t over intersection widths of 0.95 m to 2.63 m. Four distinct facies types have been identified over the property, viz.1) Normal Merensky Reef, generally 1.2 m thick, bounded by thin top and basal chromitite layers and composed of upper feldspathic pyroxenite and lower feldspathic olivine pegmatoids containing base metal sulphide mineralization overlying poikilitic anorthosites. 2) Single chromitite Merensky Reef, generally0.15 m thick and usually devoid of internal silicate material, overlying variable stratigraphy containing significant base metal sulphide mineralization. 3) Detached Merensky Reef, generally1.0 m thick, bounded by thin top and basal chromitite layers and composed of feldspathic pyroxenite or pyroxenite containing base metal sulphide mineralization overlying Merensky Pyroxenite. 4) Normal footwall Merensky Reef, generally 1.8 m thick, bounded by thin top and basal chromitite layers and composed of feldspathic pyroxenite containing base metal sulphide mineralization overlying norites also containing significant base metal sulphide mineralization. The PGE(4) content?s (g/m2) distribution for the global intersection data appears to be lognormal, and conversion to lognormal space produces a near normal distribution which could be interpreted as a compound lognormal distribution. The mean PGE(4) contents estimated by these three different distributions are the same, and thus do not impact on the contained metal. Data for the Normal Merensky Reef facies type are sufficient to indicate that a normal distribution is followed for this facies type, and therefore does not need to be transformed to log space for estimation of the mean and the 90% confidence limits. A global evaluation based on all of the data is compared with a facies-weighted evaluation. The latter method is noted to provide a better definition of the associated estimation errors and thus potential classification of Mineral Resources. A valuation of $20.95 for Inferred and $41.90 for Indicated PGE(4) ounces is applied to both of the evaluations and compared. The global evaluation is considered to over-value the project by approximately 40%, thus indicating that valuations based on global summary sampling data that have a compound distribution may be materially flawed, and that cognizance of the underlying geology is crucial for unbiased valuation.

Underground observations in a coal mine have indicated failure oft he immediate roof above the bords. Careful observations and photographic recording of occurrences of these roof failures, termed ?roof guttering?, have been made. The occurrence of guttering results directly in roof instability, and indirectly, due to the interaction of the guttering with natural planes of weaknesses in the immediate roof rock. In this paper, relevant observations of roof guttering, possible mechanisms of formation of roof gutters, laboratory testing for determination of material strength and deformation properties, and numerical analyses to explain underground observations are described. Mapping of roof failures showed that these took place mainly towards the centre of the roadways. Roof guttering was observed often to occur violently and with little warning. Occurrence of roof guttering has a negative impact on production?some panels are abandoned, production times are increased and safety of workers is compromised. The numerical stress analyses showed that, although none of the constitutive behaviour criteria used predicted the observed underground failures correctly, the extension strain criterion gave the best agreement.

The BIOX® process was developed for the biological pre-treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates ahead of conventional cyanide leach gold recovery. Rights to the process are currently with BIOMIN Technologies SA, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited. There are currently eight operating installations worldwide employing the process on a commercial scale. EKATO is a company specializing in developing new or optimizing existing mixing applications. EKATO has acquired a vast amount of expertise in agitation over its 75 year history. In a joint research project the reactors of the BIOX® process were characterized from the aspect of their mixing performance. BIOMIN is constantly testing new mixing solutions and reviewing potential vendors to increase the efficiency of the BIOX® process. EKATO?s intention was to qualify as an approved vendor for supplying agitation equipment to the BIOX® process. A two step approach was planned: In phase one of the project EKATO would develop an alternative agitation solution to the established option, exhibiting at least similar performance levels. In phase two potential possibilities to improve the overall design would be developed. This paper focuses on phase one and addresses the systematic approach applied by EKATO in characterizing the mixing processes. Mixing tasks were assessed individually applying basic theory and scale-up and -down rules to the individual tasks. Testing with model systems was done at the EKATO technology center in Schopfheim, Germany, on scales of 50 liters and 1 m³. The results showed that the ISOJET-B impeller design showed promising performance under BIOX® reactor conditions. Scale-up with the ISOJET-B was done in order to apply it in the 21 m³ live volume test reactor at Fairview mine in South Africa. At Fairview tests were performed using model systems and eventually under real plant conditions with BIOX® slurries. The results were a success and confirmed that the scale-up factors determined during the testing at EKATO?s technology center could be substantiated in the ?model scale? 25 m³ reactor. Testing under the actual process conditions showed that all design parameters were within the desired range to be considered an excellent leaching performance. This successful joint development shows the importance of a close cooperation of technology licensors or end-users and equipment suppliers. It is vital for understanding all factors influencing the mixing performance of processes. Exercises such as this will provide equipment suppliers and plant operators more confidence in managing further scale ups at ever larger engineered plants.

A project was funded by the Australian coal industry to investigate the mechanisms that might lead to sample bias when using cross-belt cutters, in order to help coal industry personnel to make better decisions about the purchase, maintenance and operation. It concentrated on DEM modelling of skew cutters. These are set at an angle to the belt with the intention of minimizing disturbance to the non-sampled material. Two bias mechanisms are likely to cause bias for cross-belt cutters. Waves of material are bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters and material is thrown by the leading edges of cutter blades for all types of cross-belt cutters. These mechanisms cause some parts of the load of material on a belt to be over-represented. The effects of these mechanisms cannot be made to be negligible, so cross-belt samplers cannot be trusted to produce unbiased samples, especially for segregated streams of material. However, it is possible to give a bound on the maximum likely bias. The grades of two portions of the stream can be estimated by stopping the belt and shovelling off 1/3 of the cross-section of the load on the belt into a container, concentrating on the final side of the belt and the top of the load. The remaining material should be put into another container and the difference in grade determined. The maximum likely bias is typically about 10% of this difference. For a cross-belt cutter, having an extraction ratio near to 100% is not a reliable indication that the cutter has little or no bias. Some bias mechanisms affecting cross-belt sample cutters make sample mass too high and some make it too low, so an extraction ratio near 100% can occur if two bias mechanisms are both active. The new caving megaprojects that are planned to go into production in the next decade have scheduled horizontal developments at very high rates, which are difficult to achieve. Research has been conducted that seeks to model the construction times for underground developments to determine the feasibility of achieving the planned rates. However, these previous attempts do not consider all the operational aspects that make up the mine development cycle. Here, we present a discrete event simulation (DES) model that individualizes each unit operation of the development cycle to determine the construction rates that new projects will be able to attain. The developed model was applied to the New Mine Level (NML) of the El Teniente Division (DET). The results indicate that it would be impractical to achieve the advance rates scheduled in the original plans if the unit operations of the mine continue to be executed using the status quo. The metres developed after six years in the sections analysed can be significantly improved by changing the maintenance strategy for the equipment (457 metres increase), orepass availability (194 metres increase), and the initial planning sequence (1 598 metres increase). It is recommended that the mine implements a flexible maintenance strategy, defines a strategy to ensure and increase orepass availability to contractors, and makes use of current simulation tools for a more robust development sequence planning.

Despite the four-decade study on ultrasound’s (US) impact on mineral’s floatabilities, there is still not clarity regarding its role in mineral surface wettability. For this purpose, the present investigation endeavours ……the hydrophobicity and floatability characteristics of a chalcopyrite-pyrite-quartz (Cp- Py-Qtz) system in the presence and absence of an ultrasonic pre-treatment. The ultrasonic process was carried out by a sonopuls at a constant frequency of 20 kHz with an adjustable power level from 30 to 200 W. Initially, the impact of sonication time (15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 s as well as 10, 20 and 30 min) and power magnitude (30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 W) were evaluated while the dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity and pH were also monitored. Collector-less micro-flotation tests were carried out on the non-pre-treated and the US pre-treated samples at 60 W and 15 s. The samples’ hydrophobicities were determined by the drop shape analysis approach. The dissolved-oxygen level was varied using a mini bench pressurised water reactor to study the effect of O2(aq) concentration on the chalcopyrite and pyrite wettability characteristics. The results showed that the minerals’ hydrophilicities were relatively more sensitive to the sonication’s time than its power that resulted in reducing all three minerals’ hydrophobicities. In addition, it was found that the dissolved-oxygen content and creation of sub-micron sized bubbles led to an improvement on chalcopyrite and pyrite hydrophobicities. Finally, we proved that the Cp’s floatability increased and Qtz’s recovery reduced while being subjected to the ultrasonic irradiation (15 s at 60 W); however, Py’s recovery remained constant. This conclusion confirmed the possibility of a selective separation in ultrasound-assisted copper ore flotation. We recommend that further advanced investigations be conducted, using an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to thoroughly understand the surface modifications induced by the ultrasonication

AngloGold Ashanti has been proactive in the field of energy management for many years. AngloGold Ashanti is a signatory to South Africa?s National Energy Accord of 2005 calling for a15% reduction in energy consumption by 2015 for the mining sector. This target also supported our internal targets that were already set. AngloGold Ashanti?s seven South African mines consume on average 440 MW. Due to the dynamics of gold mines, and the large numbers of relatively small energy efficiency initiatives and awareness campaigns made measurement and verification of energy efficiency very difficult at a macro level since some initiatives could get lost in the fluctuating load profile. This paper will discuss the methodology and process followed to quantify the impacts of the combined energy efficiency initiatives at macro level. It will quantify the energy efficiency impacts in megawatt-hours (MWh), financial, and equivalent carbon emissions (CO2e) reduction with reference to our baseline year, 2004, for the Vaal River and West Wits mine clusters.

The electrical control of three-electrode submerged-arc furnaces suffers from a number of complexities, mostly due to the nature of the furnace electrical circuit providing power to the furnace where the three electrodes are interconnected within the furnace through the molten metal bath. This gives rise to what is known as the interaction effect 2, where variations in one electrode?s current can cause comparable changes to the currents in the other electrodes, particularly in larger furnaces with low power factor. Resistance-based control of the electrode penetration has largely alleviated these problems, since the resistance encountered by each electrode is predominantly dictated by the length and conductivity of the current path from the electrode?s tip to the molten metal bath, which acts as the three-phase circuit?s floating neutral point. Hence resistance changes due to tip position or conductivity changes beneath one electrode do not affect the resistances beneath the others, effectively decoupling the control of the individual electrodes1. Although resistance-based control is therefore generally accepted as superior to current-based control for the regulation of submerged-arc furnace electrode penetration, a few furnace operators still prefer to use current control under specific furnace conditions. This paper presents the results of analysing the performance of both current and resistance-based control in typical scenarios encountered on industrial furnaces, taking into account a number of factors including electrode penetration, power distribution, efficiency and asymmetry of the electrode currents. In order to accomplish this, three typically encountered scenarios were simulated. The results obtained show that resistance control provides more benefit in all cases, however, the uneven electrode current distribution generated by resistance control when electrodes are on top stops may cause some concern if baking of the electrodes is required in this scenario.

"Platinum is a highly valuable resource, its safe and economic extraction is paramount. The success of platinum mining by the bord and pillar method depends heavily on a comprehensive and dependable pillar design method. Pillars need to be large enough to safely support the load and small enough to avoid loss of resources. A critical evaluation of current pillar design systems used in narrow-reef platinum mining was undertaken using practical experience from a large feasibility-stage platinum exploration project, supplemented by observations from several platinum mines in Zimbabwe. An extensive literature survey was undertaken in order to determine the current status of design systems. Through this approach, the shortcomings of current pillar design systems are highlighted. Areas are proposed for further research to obtain a better understanding on how additional factors influence pillar system stability. The exploration work highlighted how rock mass classification methods can be utilized in determining the overall strength of pillars. Current pillar design systems for narrow-reef platinum mining consider width-to-heightratio (usually with different exponents for width and height) and the strength of the pillar material. However, there are many more important factors that are not considered and which have a bearing on pillar system stability. An in-depth study of these parameters with a view to establish effective narrow- reef platinum mining pillar design systems needs to be undertaken. IntroductionPillars have been used as a means of support since the early days of mining. Pillarsupported mining methods such as bord and pillar require a reliable design system for them to be successful. This paper presents an evaluation of the current hard-rock mining pillar design systems as applied to a practical large-scale narrow-reef platinum mining feasibility study. It is vital to have a dependable pillar design system for economic and sustainable mining. Using an extensive database collected from the project, the pillar strength formulae were tested and several discrepancies noted. This necessitates the establishment of more reliable pillar design systems. In narrow-reef platinum mining, large compressive stresses accompanied by geological and geotechnical factors contribute to pillar instability. A well-formulated pillar design system is required that accounts for such factors so as to minimize pillar failures."

This paper develops the themes explained at the previous SAIMM Platinum conference by Whittle and Burks1. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long- term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: ? An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated ? An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets ? An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated ? An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the Owner?s team.

A challenge in mine planning is the optimal allocation of resources to the appropriate workplaces within the shift cycle (labour, equipment type, and other resources) in order to carry out the shift cycle activities, achieve planned production targets, and ultimately maximize production within all infrastructure constraints. Generally, detailed mine planning is done on a monthly basis at a workplace level in order to determine the production targets. The production supervisor, mine overseer, or equivalent production manager must then make the appropriate resource allocation trade-off decisions on a daily basis per shift to try and deliver to the plan and required production target. Due to the complexity and number of permutations of possible resource allocation decisions, it is impossible for a human brain to make the appropriate and optimal allocation decisions that will result in achieving the maximum or target production. These allocation decision permutations must deal with the current status of workplaces (availability, position in the cycle etc.), the status of equipment availability (available, planned maintenance, or breakdown etc.), distance between the workplaces (traveling time of equipment between workplaces, etc.) and equipment type required for that shift cycle activity. All these factors need to be taken into account in resource allocation to plan for the shift, and even during the shift if a major piece of equipment becomes unavailable or a workplace activity is not progressing as planned. This paper is a case study on how an optimization algorithm can be used to create a production planning system for optimization of resource allocation in a mechanized underground platinum operation. A business case for optimal allocation of resources is demonstrated and compared to the current manual planned allocation.

Irgiredmet has substantial experience on RIP and RIL technology for gold recovery, having started development of ion exchange technology in 1964. Irgiredmet specialists were involved in the majority of RIL and RIP projects in the former Soviet Union and Russia, and took part in commissioning of practically all plants using ion exchange technology. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for designing 15 RIP plants of the former USSR using bifunctional macroporous anionite AM-2B or its analogs. This paper is devoted to the laboratory, pilot plant testing and introduction of RIP technology conducted in cooperation with GC Pertopavlovsk. Medium base resin PuroLite S992 (PuroGold) was used as adsorbent. Some adsorption regularities and the affinity of resin to metal cyanide complexes were studied. Laboratory batch and continuous pilot tests on resin-in-pulp process were held for oxidised ores from Pioneer, Albyn and Malomyr mines (Amur region, Russia) owned by the Petropavlovsk company. A simplified flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration was developed. Alkaline cyanide solution was used as gold eluent and gold was recovered from eluates by electrowinning. Process design criteria were developed on the basis of the testwork results, and the plants were designed and constructed by GC Petropavlovsk. The RIP plant at Pioneer was commissioned in May 2008, at Malomyr in August 2010, and at Albyn deposit in December 2011. These plants are currently in operation at design performance at throughputs from 3 to 6.5 Mt/year. The primary gold ores of Pioneer and Malomyr deposits are refractory to cyanidation; Irgiredmet also completed continuous testwork on RIP technology using medium-base resin for pressure oxidation (POX) residues derived from their flotation concentrates. In 2019 a hydrometallurgical plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrate after POX was commissioned at Pokrovsky mine (Amur region). Minera La Parreña, S.A. de C.V., Milpillas operation is an underground mine designed to process 8 352 tons of ore per day for the recovery of copper through crushing, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning facilities. In order to optimize copper recovery during leaching, the ore is crushed to 13 mm and subjected to primary sampling every 15 minutes for metallurgical accounting. At the same particle size, primary sample goes to secondary sampling and then, the secondary sample is crushed to 2 mm before tertiary sampling. The tertiary sample is sent to laboratory where a final sample is obtained and pulverized to 106 microns for copper assay. This paper shows a review of sampling strategy focused on minimizing or eliminating sampling errors and an experiment designed to determine copper head grade profile as well as the best sampling frequency.

The paper reviews the tapping process and the major wear mechanisms on the tap-hole, including wear from tapping tools. Measured temperatures in different tap-holes are related to choice of binder and material for repair pastes. The strength and disadvantage of carbon and silicon carbide materials are compared. Normal daily and weekly maintenance of tapholes is described, together with the major repairs that are done during longer furnace shutdowns. The objective is to show that the type of repair and repair material needs to be adapted to each individual furnace.

From the point of view of the environmental impact created, dimension stone mining is a relatively benign industry. There are no emissions besides those of the diesel powered earthmoving equipment utilised in its extraction and a small amount of blasting gases. Contamination of water resources is only likely in the event of petrochemical spillages from storage facilities and equipment, and these can largely be either prevented or cleaned up effectively. The major environmental impacts are of a visual nature, while in sensitive areas, habitat destruction and the destruction of archaeological heritage may become significant impacts. The dimension stone industry has grown at an average rate of over 7% per annum since 1986, and is forecast to continue growing at this rate for the foreseeable future. The cumulative environmental impact of the industry will thus become more significant over time. This paper discusses the environmental impacts of dimension stone mining and recommends effective means for dealing with the practical aspects of reclamation and mine closure in dimension stone mining within the context of environmentally responsible business practices. The discussion focuses mainly on the operations of the Finstone Group in Southern Africa, which are considered to be world leaders in the application of environmental management within the dimension stone mining industry, although reference is also made to other situations which the authors have encountered at dimension stone quarries around the world.
