JoughinMr Turgay Gurun, in presenting his paper, indicated that this simulator was no purely theoretical exercise, but that the model had been used in the design of crushing plants of capacities ranging from 3 000 tons per day to 66 000 tons per day, and that recently the design of a plant of capacity of 99 000 tons per day had been studied.The crushing plant simulator was an independent portion of a much more comprehensive simulator for the design of a. complete recovery plant. It would be possible to use each section of this simulator on its own, and simulators would be designed to cover flotation concentrates, cash flow analyses of the entire project, and so on.Each simulator would be backed by a comprehensive data bank. For example, the crushing plant simulator was backed by such a data bank which included the performance and cost data from five manufacturers for an average of 30 items of process and materials handling equipment each. This meant that data preparation involved generally less work than would be required for a manual calculation. On average, data preparation for one run took 30 minutes and three minutes of computer time on an IBM 360/40 completed the run. The model could be valuable as a design tool in that it allowed the designers an opportunity to make a thorough examination of many alternative designs. It was also of value to plant operators as it could be used to predict the consequences of operating decisions.This paper generated much interest and there were numerous questions and contributions, so many, in fact, that the discussion had to be cut short.It was pointed out by Mr K. F. Lane that crushing plants represented a very large capital investment. A plant designed for 40 000 tons per day at 98 per cent efficiency might well in practice be run at 50 000 tons per day at, say, 83 per cent efficiency. He asked how, therefore, their design could be investigated without building economic criteria into the model? The author conceded that this was a tender point. He would have liked to have given facilities for more variability of the metallurgical information. He pointed out, however, that while there was no overdesign for conservatism built into his system, some overdesign was inevitable as the performance characteristics given by the manufacturers were generally conservative. Also, in his system, if lower recovery was allowed for, the system would nut through more tonnage."

It highlights the limitations of traditional technology adoption models, such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Diffusion of Innovations (DOI), and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), which focus on individual factors and overlook the strategic and organizational roles of leadership. The study proposes the Ambidextrous Leadership-Technology Adoption (ALTA) model, which integrates leadership styles such as transformational, transactional, adaptive, and ambidextrous leadership into the technology adoption process. The model emphasizes the balance between exploration (fostering innovation) and exploitation (ensuring operational efficiency). The findings suggest that transformational leadership fosters innovation by encouraging risk-taking and creativity, while transactional leadership ensures efficient technology integration. The article also identifies key barriers to technology adoption, such as organizational resistance to change, which can be mitigated through adaptive leadership that addresses employee concerns. The research emphasizes the importance of a supportive organizational culture and cross-functional collaboration, which are essential for successful technology adoption. The study concludes by offering practical recommendations for leaders to foster a culture of innovation, manage resistance, and balance short-term efficiency with long-term technological advancement.

The inverse velocity method has proven to be an effective approach for predicting slope failures in surface mines by analysing displacement monitoring data. However, the accuracy of inverse velocity method predictions is significantly affected by instrumental noise and natural environmental variations, which influence the identification of different deformation stages. To enhance predictive accuracy, this study applies and evaluates three filtering techniques to velocity time series data: Exponential smoothing filter, short-term smoothing filter, long-term smoothing filter and also compares it to raw data (no filtering). A refined prediction framework, that is, filtered inverse velocity method analyser, is proposed to improve slope failure forecasting in surface mining operations. The results demonstrate that filter selection plays a crucial role in optimising failure time predictions, offering valuable insights for geotechnical monitoring and early warning systems in surface mines.

In this paper, four cyanide-utilising bacteria strains were isolated from a gold mine tailings pond, in the Hexi gold mine (Shandong), China. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, four strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila strain C1, Bacillus mojavensis strain C3, Shewanella oneidensis strain C2, and Aeromonas media strain C4. Based on the cyanide detoxification efficiencies results of the four strains, Bacillus mojavensis C3 had the highest detoxification rate and was selected to assess its efficiency to detoxify cyanide in gold mine tailings at different pH (9.5, 10.5, and 11.6) using cyanide as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources. Strain C3 was capable of detoxifying 46.5mg/L of cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at all tested pH ranges at 30oC, 196 rpm after 15 d. The amounts of cyanide detoxified were 87.5%, 84.1%, and 73.5% at initial pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest cyanide detoxification was observed at pH 9.5. The viable cells growths in the samples were 5.7E+09CFU/mL, 4.9E+09CFU/mL, and 2.7E+09CFU/mL at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. Free ammonia concentrations were observed as a byproduct of the biodetoxification process. The residual ammonia concentration in the sample was observed at 0.35 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, and 0.62 mg/L at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest residual ammonia concentration was noticed at pH 11.6. The amount of cyanide removed by mixed culture strains C3 and C4 was 94.6% and showed a residual free ammonia concentration of 2.6mg/L, as biodetoxification byproduct after 120 h. The pure culture Bacillus mojavensis strain C3 and its mixed culture strains exhibited higher potential to detoxify cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at alkaline pH values and could be cultivated to detoxify gold mine effluents at large-scale. The present study focuses on utilising the electrocoagulation (EC) process for the treatment of process water generated in an iron ore beneficiation plant for safe discharge and reuse. Removal of heavy metals like Fe, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn and Pb which was found in higher concentration along with some other impurities exceeding the permissible and discharge limit were attempted. The influence of different electrode material, current density, inter-electrode distance, and solution conductivity was explored for effective removal of the metal ions. Experimental results infer that almost 99.95% Fe, 97.77% Cr, 73.44% Cu, 99.34% Pb and 88.69% Mn was removed using aluminum electrodes at monopolar mode at a current density of 68.50 A/m2, inter-electrode distance of 1 cm and solution conductivity of 1.033mS after 60 min of EC. In addition, removal of other toxins like TDS, turbidity, salinity and conductivity etc. was also assessed during the process. Removal of such heavy metal ions by EC was found to follow 1st order kinetics with electric energy consumption of 3.93 kWh/m3, electrode consumption of 0.1191 kg/m3 and operating cost of 0.6115 US$/m3 respectively. "SynopsisThe process of joining materials by friction is based on generating the heat necessary to create a solid-state mechanical bond between two faying surfaces to be joined. In simple terms, the components to be joined are subjected to frictional heating between rubbing surfaces, causing an increase in interface temperature and leading to localized softening of interface material, creating what is described as a ’third body’ plasticized layer. This plasticized zone reduces the energy input rate from frictional heating and hence prevents macroscopic melting. The plasticized layer can no longer transmit sufficient stress as it effectively behaves as a lubricant (Boldyrev and Voinov, 1980; Godet, 1984; Singer, 1998; Suery, Blandin, and Dendievel, 1994). The potential for this solid-state frictional joining process to create high-performance joints between, for example, dissimilar materials with limited detrimental metallurgical impact, and reduced defect population and residual stress level, has had a very significant impact on fabrication and repair in industrial sectors such as transport. This paper presents a brief overview of the advances made within the family of friction processing technologies that could potentially be exploited in the nuclear industry as alternative joining and repair techniques to fusion welding.Modern friction processing technologies can be placed into two main categories: those that make use of a consumable tool to achieve the intended repair or joint (friction stud and friction hydro-pillar processing) and those making use of a non-consumable tool (friction stir welding). The most mature friction joining technology is friction rotary welding, where a joint is formed between original parent materials only. A new addition in this category is linear friction welding, which opens the potential for joining complex near-net-shape geometries by friction heating. The continuous innovation in friction processing over the last 25 years has led to the development of a number of unique processes and applications, highlighting the adaptability of friction processes for specialized applications for high-value engineering components.IntroductionAssessing the potential for using alternative joining and repair techniques for specific applications in a given industrial sector is informed by an appreciation of the current size and potential growth in that sector. Power generation by nuclear fission has been out of favour over the past few years, due to several high-profile nuclear incidents, e.g. the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, as well as concerns over disposal of nuclear waste and spent fuel rods. However, due to rapid increases in the demand for electricity, coupled with many fossil-fuel fired plants reaching end-of-life, there is renewed interest in installing additional nuclear capacity."

A reliable method to locate microseismic evets is an important objective for routine mine seismic monitoring. We developed an algorithm that can automatically and reliably locate an event from a single uniaxial trace. Signals created by microseismic events are recorded as seismograms that consist of direct P- and S-waves as well as the waves reflected off the underground excavations. We take advantage of the extra complexity these reflections introduce as they make the signal more unique. In our investigation we cross-correlated unaltered synthetic seismograms against trial waveforms created from a linear combination of appropriate waveforms from a library of numerically calculated strain Green’s tensors. We use a single uniaxial synthetic seismogram to invert for the source location, six moment tensor components, and frequency. The resulting cost functions are constructed as maximal correlations at each node in the mine grid through the true source x-planes. This function is maximized by differential evolution to simultaneously yield the source parameters. Sensitivity tests such as shifting the mine plans and altering the background velocities of the media are investigated to test the robustness of the method. We contaminate the data with 40% white noise to test the resolution against simulated real recorded seismograms. The method is demonstrated using synthetic data calculated with a realistic underground 3D velocity model.

Metallurgical simulation and evaluation of the resource efficiency of whole production processes are of key importance for impact assessment, in terms of environment and resources. Exergy is a measure of resource consumption, taking into account energy, raw materials, water, and chemicals; which allows for the evaluation of different technologies to find the most resource efficient and environmentally friendly process. This paper compares the sustainability for production of rare earth magnets from primary and secondary resources through an exergetic evaluation of the production process, in addition to traditional life cycle assessment (LCA). The methodology makes use of simulation tools for tracking material flow and resources used, based on thermodynamic laws, from ore exploitation to magnet production and recycling. It highlights areas with the greatest potential for improvements in terms of resource consumption and environmental impact generation, having a thermodynamic-validated flowsheet for primary and secondary production of NdFeB magnets, present in several low-carbon technologies, such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, and cooling systems. It demonstrates the minimum exergy destruction for magnet production, through an irreversibility breakdown chart, showing where irreversible material and energy losses occur. Results show that CO2-equivalent emissions for producing NdFeB permanent magnets from primary resources could be twice as high when compared to magnets produced from recycling technologies. The theoretical maximum exergetic efficiency for primary production is 57.61%, whereas for permanent magnets produced from secondary resources, the exergetic efficiency reaches up to 82.89%. Two magnet recycling technologies were evaluated, i.e. in acidic medium and via hydrogen decrepitation, and it was observed that their exergetic efficiency and environmental impact performed better than production from primary resources. The near depletion of high-grade ores, among other factors, has necessitated the consideration of alternative PGM sources. Various factors in the metallurgical processing of ores result in valuable minerals being lost to the tailings, and hence, PGM tailings are a possible alternative PGM source. However, as the value residing in PGM tailings remains unquantified and uncharacterised, there is a challenge in knowing the recoverable fraction of value contained in PGM wastes. This paper outlines the in-situ techniques of oxygen uptake and EDTA extraction for their possible use for determining the recoverable value in PGM tailings. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. (Visitor) Picklers and galvanizers in and around Johannesburg are encountering an ever-increasing problem in disposing of spent liquors from their hydrochloric acid pickling baths. Particularly troublesome is the zinc-contaminated liquor that is produced as a result of the clean-up of rejects from the galvanizing operation. Because of the volatility of zinc chloride. this liquor presents difficulties when processed in a conventional pyrohydrolysis acid-recovery unit. The paper describes the Metsep Process. developed by the National Institute for Metallurgy and Woodall-Duckham S.A. (Pty) Ltd. which involves the use of continuous ion exchange for the separation of the zinc from the pickle liquor. and the use of liquid-liquid extraction for the conversion of zinc chloride eluate to salable zinc sulphate. A description of laboratory and pilot-plant tests is given. and the approach used in the design of a full-scale continuous- ionexchange plant is outlined.

The production of electrolytic manganese in South Africa by M. HARRIS, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Eng.) (Fellow), D. M. MEYER, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Meeh. Eng.) (Visitor), and K. AUERSWALD (Visitor) The decision to construct the first electrolytic manganese plant in South Africa was important and farreaching. After evaluating the results of the pilot plant operation, the first South African producer, Electrolytic Metal Corporation (Emcor), established a plant in Krugersdorp. Initially, there were many process problems that had to be InvestIgated, and, after these had been solved and many operating parameters had been established, manganese was successfully produced. When the Delta Manganese plant in Nelspruit was planned, cognizance was taken of the fact that, if peak efficiencies were to be maintained, the process must be operated between fairly narrow parameters. Instrumentation was therefore installed to control the process automatically wherever possible. The main features of the Delta Manganese operation are outlined, with a brief description of each stage of the process from ore milling through to electrowinning and packing of the metal. It is concluded that much benefit can be obtained from further research work into process improvements and into the exact effect of certain variables on plant and current efficiency.

Leadbeater The present reviewer approached the above book as a relative novice on the intricate details of fracture mechanics. Thus, the review is based to a great extent on how easily the information presented can be assimilated and understood, and how the book's format and content facilitate this. Dimension stone mining is Increasing because of growing demand from the building and construction industries. Diamond wire saw cutting is a popular dimension stone mining technique around the world. Estimation of the production cost for this method is critical for these operations. n this research a production cost model was developed for the mining of granite using a diamond wire saw. Cost and production data were collected from a granitic dolerite operation in Pakistan for a 4.5-year period, and analysed to identify the cost components. Fuel (34%), labour (15%), consumables (40%), and maintenance (5%) were found to be the four major cost components in this operation. A regression-based dimension stone production cost model incorporating statistically significant variables was developed. The data presented a strong correlation of production cost with fuel, labour, and consumables costs. Finally, a production cost model based on the consumption cost of diamond wire is presented. The model was verified using actual production cost data, which indicated 95% (R2 = 0.95) variance in the data between the predicted and actual production cost values. The model may help field engineers in computing their dimension stone operational cost during the cutting phase.

Body breakage usually involves breakage of particles by compression between two surfaces or impacted against a rigid surface, with the latter of interest in this current study. This mode of breakage has been identified to be the most elementary size reduction process and the most effective breakage process in comminution devices. It has been found in the literature that the progenies produced from this form of breakage possess a residual velocity at which they move, after the breakage event. In the pursuit of efficiently utilising applied comminution energy, a laboratory-scale breakage device has been developed to deliver precise specific impact breakage using the concept of a fast-moving hammer and a slow-moving particle to effect breakage. The residual velocities of the progenies from the breakage event may be used to generate secondary breakage without further addition of energy if the particle encounters a stiff obstacle such as a steel plate at right angles to its path. To measure the extent of secondary breakage, the steel wall of the device was lined with a rubber material to suppress the second set of breakage events. The performance of the new device is analysed, based on calculated t10 values and measured residual velocities of the moving daughter particles. Testing involving anvils showed a much finer PSD and higher t10 compared to the test involving rubber lining. This finding is corroborated by the measured residual velocities of the progenies. The resulting energies calculated from the measured residual velocities of the progeny were found to be approximately 42-88% of the primary specific impact energy. The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect of high-temperature heat treatment on the electrical resistivity of charcoal. Samples of two different wood types (eucalyptus and black wattle) were pyrolised in a retort at a temperature of 700°C and the resulting charcoals heat-treated in an induction furnace at temperatures from 800°C to 1800°C and residence times from 60 to 120 minutes. After cooling, the resistivities of the samples were measured at room temperature using the four-point probe technique. It was found that as the heat treatment temperature increased the electrical resistivity of the charcoal decreased, approaching an asymptotic value at higher temperatures. Longer residence times decreased the resistivity, but this effect was not pronounced.
