A new approach to the -study of human factors in stope productivity by A. C. LAWRENCE B. Econ., D. Com. (S.A.) (Member) The extent of the improvement in mean performance which could be achieved by reducing the variance between stoping gangs is examined, and it is shown that a worthwhile gain would result if variance were reduced by as little as 5 to 15 per cent. The problem of identifying human factors which contributed towards variance in gang performance was examined in one gold mine. A total of 342 'observations' on 49 stoping gangs were gathered, each observation consisting of a set of figures for 36 variables for one gang for one week. The variables included 'stope factors' such as face length, 'gang factors' such as the ethnic composition of the gang, and 'supervisory factors' such as the experience of the miner. These variables were related to 'tons trammed per week' as a measure of work performance. The findings showed that certain of the predictor variables accounted for 66 per cent of the variance in gang performance and about two thirds of this could be attributed to gang and supervisory factors, that is to the 'human factors'. The method suggests a basis for a new approach to the identification of human factors and is a promising step towards optimizing gang performance.

The aim of the study is to determine if pit lakes are a sustainable coal mine closure option in South African. The water balance, chemistry, limnology, and bacterial population of three selected pit lakes were investigated. The lakes are in the three major coal basins of South Africa and are associated with different lithologies and mining methods. The major factors driving the water balance of the pit lakes are direct rainfall, runoff, inflow from old mine workings, and groundwater infiltration, with the major losses being evaporation or discharge onto surface. The study indicated that pit lakes can be designed as ’terminal sinks’ to provide a sustainable mine closure option. The pit lakes sampled have an alkaline pH, and mostly a sodium/calcium sulphate water with total dissolved solids content of less than 3000 mg/l. The phytoplankton and microbiological data indicates that the pit lakes support aquatic life. The study shows that correctly designed pit lakes can be an environmentally sustainable closure option for South Africa’s coal mines. A suggested design manual has been developed to assist mine owners and regulators in developing sustainable coal mine pit lakes as a closure option.

Lightning has been observed in dust clouds following open-pit blasting. It is proposed that the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the physical composition and characterization of the mineral fines that comprise the bulk of the dust cloud. Silicate minerals, which are susceptible to fine fracturing during blasting, generate the initial charge. This is further enhanced by collisions and friction during the turbulent upcast in the post-blast dust cloud. Varying size fractions result in different rates at which these particles drop out of suspension and create a secondary temperature gradient. This results in the creation of two charged zones and increases the potential of developing a discharge in the form of lightning. The ideal prevailing meteorological conditions need to be windless to minimize the effect of particle dissipation and have sufficient moisture toenhance the potential of generating lightning.

Among different pre-treatment methods, a high voltage electric pulse was recently developed and is gaining popularity due to multi-benefits such as pre-weakening along the grain boundaries, as well as size reduction to improve the liberation characteristics. In this paper, the pre-treatment using high voltage electric pulse of lithium-bearing granite ore was studied to understand the morphology through texture, as well as the friability of the particles. To understand the phenomena, SELFRAG, a laboratory facility used for generating high voltage electric pulse and key operating variables were varied. The role of applied voltage (94.5-195.5 kV), number pulse (3-87), and the frequency of pulse (1.3-4.7 Hz) was varied to understand the liberation characteristics as well as energy consumption. Characterisation tools such as optical, and electron microscopy were used to describe the pre-weakening phenomena through textural features. Further, the energy required to break the particle to finer sizes as well as friability were determined and described. An electrochemical technique based on the solid oxide galvanic cel Mo / Mo + MoO2/ ZrO2-MgO / Fe + (FexO)slag + Ag / Fe was used in a determination of FexO activities in liquid slag systems. The emf measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and microprobe analysis of the cross-sections of the electrolyte tubes used in direct contact with the slag melts indicated that slag attack did not affect the open-circuit emf values during normal cell operation, The reliability of the cell was confirmed by the good agreement between the standard free energy of formation of liquid Fep obtained in the present study and those reported in the literature, The FexO activities were determined in FexO -CaO and FexO-SiO2 slags at 1673 K, and are in good agreement with those measured by the conventional gas-equilibrium technique. The experimental technique was successfully extended to the measurement of Fe2O activities in the complex slags that are used for the external desilliconization of the hot metal product of the blast furnace.

A method is described for the determination of cyanide in gold slurries, based on amperometry. The measured current is proportional to the concentration of cyanide, and is not effected by pH or by the concentration of oxygen in solution. It is also unaffected by other ions that may be present in gold-leaching solutions, including sulphide, thiocyanate, and thiosulphate. The current depends on the temperature, and an activation energy of 17,9 kJ/mol was determined Since the current is controlled by the mass transfer of cyanide to the anode, it depends on the conditions of agitation. In tests on an operational gold plant, slurry was pumped directly from the top of the leaching tank, through the measuring cell and back into the tank. The results indicate that the instrument is a promising alternative to the instruments currently available. The readings from the instrument remained in calibration for at least two days, showing that the instrument would need to be re-calibrated by the operating staff at regular periods.

Crushing plant managers need to assess, manage, and communicate the environmental impact induced by their crushing plant operations as a step towards the sustainable development of the company. However, performing reliable environmental impact calculations of crushing plants can be challenging when the availability of operational and emission data is low, and when the company’s environmental expertise is not adapted and connected to plant operations (or does not currently exist). To address these challenges, this paper proposes a practical approach where the lifecycle assessment methodology (LCA) is combined with process simulations in a web-based tool. To describe what functionality such a tool should have to be incorporated into a company’s workflow, the system that surrounds a crushing plant is analysed. Further, a case study with a three-stage crushing plant is introduced to showcase how the simulated power draw results produced with the beta version of the tool can be compared to measured sensor data from the crushing plant for one operational day. The results indicate that the simulation tool can provide an adequate estimation of the specific energy for the different material fractions and give an overview of the environmental impact of the process caused by electricity and explosives consumption. Plant managers and operators can use this tool to calculate the environmental impacts of their plant and simulate how different operational strategies influence them. Tungsten carbide is a fine grey powder. It can be formed into shapes by compacting with the addition of a binder. Spherical particles are generally preferred in additive manufacturing as they pack together more efficiently than non-spherical particles, promoting a uniform powder bed density, better flowability, and elimination of internal cavities and fractures, resulting in a better quality of final product. The particle shape of powders can be transformed into spherical through the process of spheroidization. However, due to its high melting point, tungsten carbide could be difficult to spheroidize. Tungsten carbide was spheroidized using an inductively coupled radio frequency plasma at various plate powers between 9 and 15 kW. The influence of additional H2 in the sheath gas on the chemical composition of the tungsten carbide product was also investigated by means of XRD, which indicated that WC is converted to W2C at higher H2 concentrations. Optical analysis of SEM micrographs indicated that the spheroidization ratio increased with increased plasma energy.

Postage and packing, 3s. 6d. This volume should be of interest to economic geologists and students in this field. A number of illustrated papers on the genesis of ores in sediments are presented; the authors include experts such as Prof G. C. Amstutz, Dr K. C. Dunham, Prof D. Williams and W. G. GarIick. The papers deal mainly with sulphide deposits, but the late Prof J. H. Taylor's contribution concerns ores of iron and manganese. Brief references to the Witwatersrand ores represent the only discussion of South African deposits. With the notable exception of W. G. Garlick's paper on Zambian copper deposits, the Abstracts given are inadequate, necessitating thorough reading of the papers to extract the important matter.

A siliceous low-grade copper ore from Mpanda Mineral Field (MMF), located in south west Tanzania consisting of SiO2 (58.3%), Fe (10.4 %) and Cu (0.9 %) was initially subjected to selective dispersion-flocculation using sodium trisilicate (STS) as a dispersant and xanthan gum (XG) as a flocculant. Subsequently, the selectively flocculated fraction was floated using a collector combination of potassium ethyl and amyl xanthate (1:1) in the presence of poly-ethylene oxide (PEO) as a silica depressant, to get a copper concentrate. The mineralogical investigations confirmed that the MMF ore was mainly composed of quartz, chalcopyrite and pyrite. Adsorption studies indicated that the adsorption density of XG on MMF ore decreased with an increase in pH, while that of PEO was independent of pH. The adsorption isotherms of XG and PEO on MMF ore exhibited Langmuirian behaviour. The zeta potential studies of MMF ore indicated that the iso-electric point (IEP) was located at pH 2.6, presumably due to its high silica content. In the combined presence of XG and STS, the zeta potential of MMF ore became more negative, with an increase in the concentration of STS. However, in the presence of PEO, the zeta potential of MMF ore became less negative with an increase in the concentration of PEO beyond the IEP, without shifting the IEP. Selective dispersion-flocculation of MMF ore improved the flocculated chalcopyrite grade to 19.8 %, yielding a degree of flocculation and a maximum separation efficiency of 12.1 % and 85.7 % respectively, after three desliming stages in the presence of 30 ppm of STS and 30 ppm of XG. A copper concentrate of 29 % grade and 90 % recovery containing silica of 0.9 % grade and 1.7 % recovery was achieved by flotation of the selectively flocculated component, using PEO as a depressant for quartz. Production of oxygen on the moon can be achieved by reduction of lunar soil. One such reduction technology, hydrogen reduction, favours a high proportion of ilmenite in the feedstock. Ilmenite is present in lunar soil as a minor mineral phase, but it can be upgraded using electrostatic separation. This study presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the operating parameters and sensitivities of a free-fall electrostatic mineral separator for lunar applications. Samples of ballotini and ilmenite as well as simple binary mixtures of the two were tribocharged on copper and passed through a uniform electrostatic field. The field is varied to change the electrostatic force acting on the particles. The proportion of material reporting to the positive electrode collectors, negative electrode collectors or the central collector was measured to determine the separation performance. The data confirmed that the charge transferred from the tribocharger to each species is in agreement with the triboelectric series; ballotini was found to charge positively on copper and ilmenite negatively. Particle-particle contacts were dominant, however, resulting in a somewhat symmetrical particle distribution in the collectors. These findings indicate that the copper tribocharger design requires optimisation in order to substantially increase particle-wall contacts. Four binary mixtures with feed grades of ilmenite ranging from 5% to 20% were prepared and tested. This study found that a higher ilmenite head grade resulted in a higher concentrate grade (26.3% from a head grade of 20%) with low recovery (3.4%). In contrast, the lower feed grade resulted in a low concentrate grade but higher recovery. The mass yield of ilmenite was 1.4 times greater for the highest-grade feed than for the lowest. A subsequent study into the reprocessing of middling fraction found a nearly constant relationship between cumulative grade and recovery. This is the first investigation into the effect of feed grade on the concentrate grade and recovery for lunar mineral processing. Keywords: Lunar resources, beneficiation, electrostatic, SRU, ISRU

Compressed air is widely used on South African gold mines. However, due to recent and proposed future electricity tariff increases it is quickly becoming too expensive to produce and use. Boxfront chute systems at ore passes were focused on during this study, and a number of alternative power sources were examined. After comparing primarily costs, and secondarily safety and practicality, of a number of systems based on water and hydraulic oil, a system making use of either air or water was determined to be the most cost effective. A payback time of 8 years was calculated, which will be significantly less taking into account the avoidance of failures due to electricity and water shortages, which would not affect this system due to its ability to swap between either air or water. It was recommended that this system be installed at all boxfront chutes as soon as possible so that the company can begin to benefit from the cost savings.

The Gautrain rapid rail link project is currently Africa?s largest infrastructure project connecting South Africa?s major airport (OR Tambo), Johannesburg and Pretoria. Phase one is planned for completion in time for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and involves 80 km of track and 15 km of underground tunnels. The key shaft sinking blasting issues revolve around maximising advance and improving blasting cycles to meet the tight deadlines as well as environmental control which, in some cases takes place only 15m from the city infrastructure. To achieve success, DetNet South Africa supplied a range of electronic detonator systems to cater for the different blasting applications involved (tunnels, portals, shafts and viaduct foundations). One such product, QuickShot, was used for the first time in a major civil engineering project and has been used in most of the shaft sinking blasts to date. The QuickShot system combines pre-programmed electronic detonators with special on-bench components that enable the user to quickly and easily design the firing sequence solely by using the order of connections. This precludes the user from having to deal in absolute delay times. The connecting system enables benches to be hooked-up speedily by multiple users who have differing levels of experience. This paper provides details of how, after 33 months, the system has been embraced by the project by aiding in maximised advances, improved cycle times and meeting the required environmental constraints.

South Africa has the world?s largest in situ deposits of platinum group metals, but economically exploitable resources are shrinking due to escalating costs and technical challenges. The South African National Research and Development Strategy comments that an increase in the knowledge intensity of the resource-based sectors is required to turn these resources to account. Highly trained human resources, continuous improvement, technological innovation, and smart acquisition of know-how will become the major differentiators in the global mining market. Mechanization and, ultimately, automation in mining have the potential to reverse the negative mining trend and resolve safety and other challenges. However, the adoption rate of mechanized mining in platinum (and hard-rock gold) has been slow for various reasons. Changing systems from conventional drill?and-blast to continuous mechanized mining is a big step-change endeavour. The problem of transformation is discussed, and the discipline of systems engineering is examined because of its successful application in aerospace and defence.

Broken Hill Mines-1968, edited by M. Radmanovich and J. T. Woodcock, published by The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Melbourne, 613 pages. Price $A15. This volume, containing some 65 technical papers, was produced for the 1968 annual conference of the Australasian Institute held at Broken Hill to mark the 75th Anniversary of that Institute, founded at Broken Hill in 1893. That conference also coincided with the 85th Anniversary of the discovery of the Broken Hill mining field. This closely reflects the position in this country, where the Witwatersrand gold fields were discovered in 1886, and our South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will in March, 1969 be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the forerunners of our Institute. There is a comprehensive report of the geology of the Broken Hill area and the mineralogy of the ore body, and there are reports on the mining methods and the metallurgical procedures which have been developed over 85 years of operation of one of the great mining fields of the world. The value of most of the papers is enhanced by a large number of illustrations and photographs. An early section covers the academic and practical aspects of rock mechanics, prospecting, and exploration techniques are described in some detail. A third of the volume is devoted to mining, with papers on 26 aspects. The breadth of the coverage gives an indication of much specialized development, research, and consequent maturity in all departments. The detailed treatment of metallurgical aspects such as sizings of individual mineral particles throughout the milling stages and the development of an on-stream analysis system for lead will commend this volume to the specialist. The committee responsible for the production of this volume, which brings together much information previously only to be found after searching through numerous publications, are to be congratulated on a well produced comprehensive review of many aspects of the mining and metallurgical fields. Total bound moisture (TBM) is a typical quality indicator of industrial-grade gypsum. This gypsum is comprised of three distinct phases, namely anhydrite, dihydrate, and hemihydrate, of which only the latter is of much industrial use. TBM analysis is a lengthy laboratory procedure, and an artificial neural network (ANN) TBM inference measurement is proposed as a fast and online alternative. An ANN inference model for gypsum TBM based on plant data was developed. The inputs to the network were primarily focused on the plant's calciner, and different network topologies, data divisions, and transfer functions were investigated. Furthermore, the applicability of the TBM value as a quality indicator was investigated based on a gypsum phase analysis. A strong correlation between TBM and the gypsum hemihydrate and anhydrite content was found, validating the plant target TBM of 5.8% as a quality indicator. A network topology consisting of one hidden layer with logarithmic-sigmoid (logsig) and pure linear (purelin) transfer functions showed the best performance (R > 90%).

Although additive manufacturing is fast gaining traction in the industrial world as a reputable manufacturing technique to complement traditional mechanical machining, it still has problems such as porosity and residual stresses in components that give rise to cracking, distortion, and delamination, which are important issues to resolve in structural load-bearing applications. This research project focused on the characterization of the evolution of residual stresses in Ti-6Al-4V extra-low interstitial (ELI) additive-manufactured test samples. Four square thin-walled tubular samples were deposited on the same baseplate, using the direct energy deposition laser printing process, to different build heights. The residual stresses were analysed in the as-printed condition by the neutron diffraction technique and correlated to qualitative predictions obtained using the ANSYS software suite. Good qualitative agreement between the stress measurements and predictions were observed. Both approaches revealed the existence of large tensile stresses along the laser track direction at the sections that were built last, i.e., centre of the top layers of the samples. This in addition leads to large tensile stresses at the outer edges (corners) which would have the effect of separating the samples from the baseplate should the stresses exceed the yield strength of the material. Such extreme conditions did not occur in this study, but the stresses did lead to significant distortion of the baseplate. In general, the microstructures and spatial elemental mapping revealed a strong correlation between the macro-segregation of elemental V and the distribution of the β-phase in the printed parts.
