Spiral concentrators are gravity-based separators widely used to beneficiate coal, heavy minerals and beach sand. It consists of a helicoid trough that spirals downward in the helical configuration around an axial column. The particle segregation takes place based on size and density under the influence of gravity as the particles spiral down within the thin water layer. In the last century, most design modifications of this equipment were based on trial and error based lab-scale experimentations and empirical approach. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has gained interest in the past two decades to understand the underlying flow physics in the spiral concentrators. In this paper, we used CFD to model the fluid flow and investigate the particle segregation inside a conventional LD9 spiral concentrator. Firstly, the Volume of Fluid model was used to resolve the liquid-air interface. The liquid depth and flow field predictions for varying flowrates were validated against the experimental literature data. One-way coupled VOF-LPT model was then used to describe the particle dynamics in the spiral flow field assuming dilute particulate flow. Moderate dense particulate flow (20 vol.%) was then modelled using the Algebraic Slip Mixture (ASM) model. Four particle-phases representing particles of different sizes of dual-density were simulated, and the component particle segregation was analysed. Since the flow behaviour of slurry containing both coarse and very fine particles has not been sufficiently clarified, the paper focuses on the experimental study of the particle size distribution, time and intensity of shearing and the effect of chemical agents on the hydraulic gradient versus the average velocity relationship of fluidic ash slurries in the laminar and turbulent regimes. The recirculation pipe loop with smooth stainless steel pipes of inner diameters 26.8 and 36 mm was used for measuring the ash-water mixtures flow parameters. The dense fluidic ash-water mixtures behave as time dependent non-Newtonian slurries. Shearing, the addition of bottom ash or chemical agents, favourably affects the flow behaviour of dense fluidic ash-water slurries. The hydraulic gradient in the laminar region significantly decreases; also the laminar/turbulent transition region is reached for lower flow velocity.

To optimize the flotation of Ca-minerals, their separation contrasts were investigated by coupling experimental and theoretical techniques. We showed that they mainly rely on structural properties such as the Ca-Ca distance on their exposed surfaces but also on the ability to control the intermolecular interactions. An optimized composition of the carboxylic collector by calculating the collector-mineral and the intermolecular interactions was developed. Blending the saturated acids and non-ionic molecules with a fatty acid collector significantly increases the flotation selectivity between scheelite (CaWO4) and fluorite (CaF2). The theoretical results were validated by experimentally improving the separation contrast between Ca-minerals. After the tests of several depressants and collectors, the best depression of gangue Ca-minerals (fluorite, apatite and vezuvianite) was found by combining sodium silicate and sodium carbonate. Recent experience has shown that all underground workplaces in the Campine Coalfield in Belgium will require controlled cooling within three years. Considering the socio-economic and legal importance of the climatic problems underground, IREA has undertaken studies in forecasting the climate of future workplaces, planning the necessary cooling equipment and optimizing efficiency in the existing cooling equipment. These studies are being carried out using the climate forecasting program of Bergbau-Forschung. So far, the German model has been obliged to utilize manually measured data from a few workplaces in the Campine. As the model does not fit very well with these measurements, it has been thought necessary to' develop a system of continuous data acquisition and transmission. This system is being tested in the Beringen mine of the N.V. Kempense Steenkollenmijnen. In the first part of this paper the digital tranmission system is described; in the second the sensors used to collect the necessary climatic data are presented, and in the third some results are given.

Because of problems encountered with conventional timber supports, a system of concrete sausageshaped support pillars was tested. The pillars are 3 m long, 0,6 m wide, and between 70 and 80 cm high (the height of the stoping width). They consist of bags filled with a grout of cement (slagment and sand in the ratio of I :2, and are installed in a staggered pattern 6 m apart on dip and 2 m apart on strike. These support packs have proved successful, and, although they cost more than the timber supports formerly used (R4,63 per cent are supported as against R2,26 for the conventional timber pack), their use is felt to be justified when account is taken of the costs of lost production and low productivity due to the bad hangingwall conditions that occurred with the conventional system.

A fuel cell locomotive incorporates the advantages of its competitors, namely catenary-electric and diesel-electric units, while avoiding their disadvantages. It possesses the environmental benefits, at the vehicle, of an electric locomotive but the higher overall energy efficiency and lower infrastructure costs of a diesel locomotive. The natural fuel for a fuel cell is hydrogen, which can be produced from many renewable sources or via nuclear energy, and thus a hydrogen-fuel cell locomotive will not depend on imported oil. Hydrogen produced from renewable primary energies or nuclear energy would provide a totally zero-emissions vehicle, that is, with zero carbon in the energy cycle. A project partnership among Vehicle Projects Inc of the USA, and South African partners Anglo American Platinum, Ltd, Trident South Africa, and Battery Electric, has designed and is launching a series of five prototype fuel cell-powered mine locomotives.

Flotation reagents play a vital role in mineral flotation. In the past century, most studies focused on the modification of anion or cation collectors and the synergistic effect of mixed collectors, which have contributed to research. In this study, we reviewed brand-new reagents, metal-organic/inorganic complexes, with the functional group of metal ion, which are totally different from the traditional anion or cation collector and show absolute specificity for some minerals. For example, Pb-BHA complex collector was developed to realise the atmospheric flotation of scheelite due to the absolute specificity for calcium minerals. Calcium oleate collector was found to be the effective species in the flotation of calcium minerals, and has been employed to selectively separate fluorite from calcite. Selective adsorption of Al-Na2SiO3 polymer on calcite surfaces proved the self-assembly of H2SiO3 polymer using Al3+ had stronger selectively adsorption ability than Na2SiO3. Also that Fe3+-starch complex was a better depressant for iron minerals than caustic starch and contributed to a more efficient reverse flotation. In conclusion, metal ions are good templates for molecular assembly and can be used to control the structure of metal complexes and exhibit special properties, which provide possibilities for the design of new flotation agents. The ferromanganese industry is under pressure to deal with the slag arising from the production of ferromanganese, which is discarded in landfills or slag heaps. This material poses an environmental and health risk to surrounding ecosystems and communities, and disposal costs are increasing. Ferromanganese slag contains an appreciable amount of residual manganese metal, which can be exploited. Previous work has shown that the slag can be leached fully, while rejecting the silica to a residue. The methods that were investigated to recover manganese from the leach solution included hydroxide precipitation to upgrade the leach solution followed by manganese carbonate precipitation to produce a pure manganese carbonate product or a manganese carbonate furnace feed material, which would be recycled to increase manganese recoveries in the production of ferromanganese. In addition, electrowinning of electrolytic manganese dioxide from the leach solution was studied. The methods were compared in terms of selectivity, costs, and product quality. Co-recovery of the leach residue, which is a potential cement additive, is discussed. Among the methods investigated to upgrade the pregnant leach solution, hydroxide precipitation utilizing ammonia to adjust the pH appears to be the most effective in removing major impurities such as iron, aluminium, and silica to less than 1 ppm. The manganese carbonate and impure manganese carbonate furnace feed products met quality specifications. However, although the production of these materials was technically viable, the large amounts of base reagent that were required to raise the pH, and the associated high operating costs, rendered the process uneconomic. An optimization study was therefore carried out with the primary objective to determine the ideal acid amount to be utilized in the waterstarved digestion stage, thereby decreasing acid and base consumption while optimizing the quality of the pregnant leach solution, and producing a leach residue that contained <1% Mn. The outcome was an economically viable process. Additional benefits included an increase in the manganese content of the impure manganese carbonate furnace feed material, and a substantial reduction in the dilution of the pregnant leach solution, thereby maintaining high manganese concentrations that rendered the solution viable for electrowinning of electrolytic manganese dioxide, the production of which yielded a current efficiency of 74%.

The goal of the study described here is to develop objective. quantitative methods for estimating the outcome probabilities of exploratory oil wells. The study employs the &apos;re-experience&apos; approach, in which historical data are used in a manner which attempts to recreate the past. Our past experience, of course, is the principal guide to the future. To appraise present-day oil prospects, however, we must analyze prospects that have been drilled in terms of how these former prospects were interpreted before they were drilled. An analysis of how they are interpreted after they were drilled is an inadequate guide to the future because our hindsight knowledge is superior to our foresight knowledge. Objective calculation of future outcome probabilities, then, requires that we attempt to treat past information in a manner analogous to that in which we must treat present information in forecasting future outcomes.

"The chromium (Cr) content of stainless steel originates from recycled scrap and/or ferrochrome (FeCr), which is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore. The oxidative sintered pellet production process is one of the most widely applied FeCr processes. The supplier of this technology specifies that recycling of chromite-containing dust collected from the pellet sintering off-gas and fines screened out from the sintered pellets (collectively referred to as pre-oxidized chromite fines) should be limited to a maximum of 4 wt% of the total pellet composition. However, the results presented in this paper suggest that recycling of such fines up to a limit of 32 wt% of the total pellet composition may improve the compressive and abrasion strengths of the cured pellet. In addition, electron microprobe and quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses demonstrate that chromite grains present in the pre-oxidized chromite fines consist, at least partially, of crystalline phases/compounds that will improve the metallurgical efficiency and specific electricity consumption (i.e. MWh/ton FeCr produced) of the smelting process. Introduction Stainless steel is a vital modern-day alloy that is well-known for its corrosion resistance, which is mainly due to the inclusion of chromium (Cr) (ICDA, 2013). Stainless steel is mostly produced from recycled scrap and ferrochrome (FeCr), a relatively crude alloy of Cr and iron (Fe). FeCr is predominantly produced by the carbothermic reduction of chromite, a mineral belonging to the spinel group characterized by the unit formula [(Mg,Fe2+)(Al,Cr,Fe3+)2O4] (Haggerty, 1991; Paktunc and Cabri, 1995; Tathavakar, Antony, and Jha, 2005). Although Cr can occur in 82 different minerals, chromite is the only source of new Cr units that can be exploited in commercial volumes (Motzer and Engineers, 2004). Approximately 95% of mined chromite is used in the production of various FeCr grades, of which high-carbon and charge grade FeCr are the most common (ICDA, 2013)."

Artisanal and small-scale miners in Nigeria struggle to attract formal financing to upgrade their operations to a more sustainable form of small-scale mining operation. Literature shows that for an investment to attract formal sources of financing; the business must be considered creditworthy by potential lenders. This means that the credit risks associated with the investment must be bearable for the potential lender. This study looks at how artisanal and small-scale miners can attract formal funding, which will help them take the leap from artisanal state to a form of sustainable small-scale mining operation. This study evaluates the creditworthiness of artisanal and small-scale mining operators using key credit risk parameters identified in the literature and through primary investigation. A quantitative study is conducted on a sample of 100 artisanal and small-scale miner establishments in Nigeria to evaluate the effect of these identified credit risk parameters on creditworthiness. It is shown in this study that being a member of a mining cooperative society, which is a form of social collateral, best improves the chances of access to formal financing for miners within the sample group. This underpins the role of social collateral, in both the formal and informal economy, and its influence in improving the creditworthiness of a typical artisanal and small-scale miner.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. Modelling stockpiles is a key factor of a project’s economics and operation in mining, because not all the mined ores are not able to mill for many reasons. Furthermore, the financial value of the ore in the stockpile needs to be reflected on the balance sheet. Therefore, automatically tracking the boundaries of the stockpile facilitates the mine scheduling engineers to calculate the tonnage of the ore remaining in the stockpile. This paper suggests how the dynamic of stockpile shape changes caused by dumping and reclaiming operations can be inferred using polygon models. The paper also demonstrates how the geometry of stockpiles can be inferred in the absence of reclaimed bucket information, in which case the reclaim polygons are established using the digger’s global positioning system (GPS) positional data at the time of truck loading. This work further compares two polygon models for creating 2D shapes.

The demand for rare earth elements has increased around the world due to their application in a variety of technological advancements. Previous studies have evaluated the potential of the rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) hosted within the Permian coal deposits of the main Karoo Basin (MKB) in Southern Africa. However, not a lot of scientific research has gone into the Triassic coal deposits. The Triassic coals in South Africa were the first coals to be exploited for their thermal use in the 1880s, but the discovery of the higher rank and more abundant Ecca coal deposits led to the Triassic coals remaining largely unexplored. The demand for rare earth elements has sparked interest in these coal deposits as potential sources for valuable minerals. Late Triassic coal deposits in Lesotho have previously not been well documented and these low-rank coals can be a potential source of rare earth elements. This study aims to characterize and evaluate the potential of REY in the Taung coal deposit, southwest of Lesotho. Coal and associated argillaceous samples from the Taung coal deposit were analyzed using microscopic petrography for coal characterization and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the amount of rare earth elements. Taung coal is classified as middle medium rank D bituminous coal. The total REY content in Taung coal and its associated rocks range from 162.9 ppm to 855.1 ppm, which is significantly higher than the upper continental crustal (UCC) average. The average critical REY concentration of samples from the Taung coal deposit is 189.4 ppm, which is three times higher than that of the Chinese Bayan Obo deposit. Samples classified as very promising and promising because of their outlook coefficients, are found to contain up to 77% of critical REY. It is envisioned that the area could be a prime deposit for these REY.

Although surfactants have proven to increase metal extraction by improving solution flow in porous media, these reagents have not been widely adopted in heap leaching operations because of potential incompatibilities with downstream processes that are subject to surface properties. The BASF leaching aid, LixTRA 118, was previously found to have no significant effect on post-leach operations. This study evaluated its performance in ores of different particle size distributions and the impact on acid consumption and metal recovery. Column leach studies, carried out on a copper oxide ore and mixed oxide–sulfide ore, showed that the effect of LixTRA 118 was more pronounced in ores with wider particle size distributions than in those with more uniformly sized particles. Solution percolation rates increased by up to 18% in the presence of leaching aid, and increased copper recovery and acid consumption. Improved wetting facilitated the kinetics of acid diffusion at macroand micropore level. There was no significant effect on iron recovery
