Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

"The valuation of diamond ferous deposits depends on (i) the density distribution, (ii) the size distribution of stones and (iii) the selling price structure prevailing at a particular time.In the density distribution the stochastic variable is defined as the Dumber of individual stones found per sample unit irrespective of the stone size. The density distribution is discrete and allows for barren sample units.As diamonds often occur in clusters, a Poisson mixture distribution is derived which is entirely new, as existing discrete distributions cannot represent the stone number frequencies found in nature.For the sizes of diamonds, which are measured by weight, a new compound logarithmic normal distribution is developed.Combination of (i), (H) and (iii) leads to a meaningful appraisal of diamond ferous ground expressed in monetary value per production unit of mining.Finally, confidence limits are calculated which allow for inference from sampling to recovery."

Introduction In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of hand held, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means—utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-freestope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to. Other challenges included setting targets for long hole accuracy, stoping width reduction and specific blasting system performance for long hole stoping. We also modelled a critical span that we considered to be inherently safe and to ensure hangingwall stability, throw-blastcleaning and overall system productivity. Anglo Platinum Research and Development and Sandvik Tamrock entered into an agreement for the supply of a specialized long hole-drilling machine. The system was implemented and tested by the mine with the support of the other participants. The results achieved met our expectations. It was demonstrated that with this method of mining it is possible to have a man-free/support-free stope face and to achieve a reduction in shaft head cost per ton whilst reducing dilution. Mine personnel and Tamrock carried out a full risk assessment on the drill rig before transporting underground. A further risk assessment was carried out when the machine was in position underground. Matte tapping is one of the most critical operations of a matte smelter. Every smelter has developed particular matte tapping practices and tap-hole repair strategies that are often based on the experience of the smelter personnel. As a result, very little information has been published on these critical topics. Rock fall accidents continue to be the main cause of fatal and serious injuries in the mining industry. Although there has been an improvement in the FOG (falls of ground) related fatal and serious injuries over the past few years, the rate is still too high. New technology has made it possible to reduce this rate significantly. FOG accidents imply failure of the support system or the design of the support system in use. In this paper we deal with the latest technology available to assist the mines to reduce the rates of FOG related injuries and fatalities.

Anglo American Platinum Limited is constantly striving to improve safety and productivity. There are many different initiatives taking place within the organization in order to ensure continued safe operation and profitable ounces for the future. One of the opportunities and potential growth areas that has been identified and is being explored is that of mechanization. In order to do this, the approach that has been adopted by Anglo American Platinum is to fully understand and analyse the current mechanized mining methods. Once each configuration is fully understood, the method can then be optimized and new mining technologies and systems can be developed to overcome the current shortfalls. This paper will discuss a methodology that was developed by Anglo American Platinum (in conjunction with Cyest Corporation) and adopted to optimize the mechanized mining layout and fleet configuration, and will also present the final findings of the study. Due to the impracticability of piloting every possible option in the workplace, extensive modelling and simulation exercises were conducted to determine realistic parameters for productivity and value. The study resulted in a full understanding of mechanized mining systems and their associated layout. From the results of the study a mining / logistic layout was developed which highlighted the following opportunities: 1. Create safe operations through the reduction of personnel in the ?high-risk zone? of stopes 2. Separate machines and personnel by use of remotely operated machines 3. Create focused mining on primary development from the production stoping, thus having dedicated teams on development and stoping. 4. Develop primary development ahead of the stoping activity. This enables: a) Understanding of the geology and subsequent implementation of the correct b) technology (?fit-for-purpose?) required to mine that area based upon this geological knowledge c) Ability to install tipping points ahead of stoping, creating ?immediate stoping reserves?, thus increasing flexibility and reducing production risk d) Improved productivity by having adequate faces available and reduction in re-development to establish faces. 5. Quicker return on Investment due to recovering revenue from ?on-reef development? 6. The layout allows flexibility between stope sections enabling better ?resource sharing? 7. Optimize the long-term ratio of machine makeup of the fleet in relation to the production outputs 8. Creates an agile mining layout allowing rapid response to market pressures. The findings and work presented in this paper is currently being implemented at different test sites within Anglo American Platinum and will demonstrate that improved safety and productivity can be achieved through the adoption of mechanization.

The near-surface wave attenuation factor k (kappa), which describes the attenuation of seismic waves with distance in the upper 1–3 km of the Earth, was determined for the Far West Rand gold mining area using seismic data recorded by station Parys (PRYS) of the South African National Seismograph Network. Twenty micro-events in the magnitude range 0.7 ? ML ? 1.8 for the period 1 July to 15 November 2015 were analysed. For the analysis a 10-second window for the S phase portion of the vertical component seismogram was selected. The result was an average k = 0.048 ± 0.014 s, which is much higher than for a stable continental region where k = 0.006 s. This is because the assumed Brune source model is inappropriate for describing mining-related events that often have moment tensors with a volumetric (implosive) component. The average k was calculated to be 0.098 ± 0.038 s for explosions of a similar magnitude. This higher value derived for mining-related k may be employed as a means of correcting the Brune source spectrum to calculate seismic moment as well as corner frequency for events in the mining areas of South Africa.

This study investigates the use of dense convolutional neural networks to estimate bubble size distributions in flotation froths. 20 videographically captured images of froths from an industrial platinum flotation plant in South Africa were labelled semantically with an image annotation tool, LabelMe (https://github.com/wkentaro/labelme). As a result, pixels in the images could be categorized into three classes, namely ‘bubbles’ (class 0), ‘bubble boundaries’ (class 1) and ‘background’ (class 2). A U-net architecture with a ResNet34 backbone was trained to segment the images via classification of the pixels in the images. 5 of the 20 images were used to validate the performance of the neural network. Explicit inclusion of the bubble boundaries as a class proved to be significantly more effective than training the network with two classes only (i.e. bubbles and background). However, the thickness of the boundary layer regions were critical. If too thin, it was difficult to distinguish between some contiguous bubbles and if too thick, some fine bubbles may not be identified. The results were promising, although there is still significant scope for improvement, among other by making use of more images for training and validation. As each stope has its own unique environment, continual re evaluation is required in all stopes to maximize extraction and achieve value from the support standard. It has generally been accepted that the volatile mater in a coal is the factor that determines whether or not a specific coal dust is an explosion risk. This paper presents the results of an attempt to relate the explosibility index (Kex) of South African coals, as determined in a AD-litre explosion vessel, to the volatile mater content of the coal and the calorific value of the volatiles. A good relationship between the calorific value of the volatiles and the explosibility index was established, which makes it possible to calculate the violence of an explosion, as expressed by Kex, for South African coals. The Kex value is but one of a number of parameters that influence the explosion hazard in a specific colliery and cannot be used as the sole predictor of the propagation of an explosion underground. Other parameters include the ignitability of the coal, temperature, humidity, dispersibility of the dust, methane concentration, amount of incombustibles present, and ventilation.

The anisotropic behaviour of “Athens Schist” has been brought out through the testing of specimens with varying orientation of schistosity with respect to the major principal stress under uniaxial, triaxial and dynamic conditions. A large number of results from tests on intact rock specimens of the “Athens Schist” were statistically analysed and evaluated. Le comportement anisotropique des roches du système “Schistes d’ Athènes” a été déterminé sur des épreuves avec une orientation différente de la schistosité par rapport à l’axe de chargement sous des conditions axiales, triaxiales et dynamiques. Un grand nombre des résultats a été statistiquement analysé et discuté. The critical importance of tap-hole design and management to furnace performance and longevity is explored through examining some of the specific matte, metal and slag tapping requirements of non-ferrous copper blister and matte converting and smelting, ferroalloys smelting and ironmaking systems. Process conditions and productivity requirements and their influence on tapping are reviewed for these different pyrometallurgical systems. Some critical aspects of the evolution of tap-hole design to meet the diverging process and tapping duties are examined. Differences and similarities in tapping practices and tap-hole management are reviewed. Finally core aspects of tap-hole equipment and maintenance are identified that are considered important to securing improved tap-hole performance and life, so pivotal to superior furnace smelting performance.

This paper presents a novel holistic healthy human framework for C-suite executives and senior leaders in the minerals industry. The value-add of the framework centres around the integration of inner holistic health and interpersonal holistic health to support and enhance environment, social, and governance transformation, with a focus on the social enterprise. The framework unpacks key components of holistic health and their interlinkages to environment, social, governance, and stakeholder engagement. Insights were gleaned from interviews with 10 C-suite executives, each with over twenty years of experience in mining or business leadership. By applying the holistic healthy human framework, industry leaders can strengthen the social licence to operate and positively transform the industry's public image. Broader application to other sectors is underway.

IntroductionThe sheer diversity of tapping configurations used on industrial pyrometallurgical operations is at first bewildering. They range from historical tilting furnaces without tapholes to modern eccentric bottom tapping (EBT) tilting and/or bottom slide-gate electric arc furnaces; to classical single tap-hole multiphase tapping (e.g. metal/matte and slag); to dedicated phase tap-holes (e.g. dedicated metal/matte-only and slag-only); to dedicated phase multiple tap-hole configurations (up to eight metal/matte-only tap-holes and six slag-only tap-holes); to more esoteric metal/matte-only siphons and slag overflow skimming, e.g. Mitsubishi Continuous Process (Matsutani, n.d.). This can be further complicated by periodic batch tapping; consecutive tapping on a given taphole; alternating tap-hole tapping practice; near-continuous slag-only tapping, with discrete batch matte/metal tapping on higher productivity, but low metal/matte fall (<20% by mass feed) Co and Ni ferroalloy and platinum group metal (PGM) matte furnaces; near-continuous tapping through batch tapping of individual tap-holes that are opened consecutively (Tanzil et al., 2001; Post et al., 2003); to fully continuous tapping on coupled multi-furnace cascades (Matsutani, n.d.)."

The necessity of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit the impact of anthropogenic climate change means that all industrial processes should investigate their options towards decarbonization. Iron, steelmaking, aluminium, and cement production produce the most industrial emissions. Although most research focuses on decarbonizing these industries, minerals processing industries must be decarbonized to achieve net zero emissions goals by 2050. Incorporating renewable energy sources and avoiding the combustion of fossil fuels are two ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reports on the results from a dynamic process model developed to investigate the feasibility of concentrating solar thermal pretreatment of manganese ores to pretreat carbonate-rich manganese ores for increased ferromanganese smelter productivity and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The results indicate that pretreated ores reduce the energy requirement for smelting significantly for some ores and lowers total carbon dioxide emissions by 13 to 19% compared to the traditional smelting route. A high-level economic evaluation shows that solar thermal treatment is financially viable for low cryptomelane, high braunite ore that is common in the Kalahari Manganese Field.

Introduction Copper and cobalt oxide mineral deposits formed by the atmospheric weathering of near surface sulphide deposits are commonplace in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The most common route for the extraction of these metals is a hydrometallurgical one in which the base metal oxides are dissolved in sulphuric acid and then concentrated further by solvent extraction. However, as many of these deposits are relatively low grade (i.e. 0.5-1.8%Co and 2-4% Cu) and can also contain large amounts of acid consuming gangue minerals (i.e. dolomitic, micaeous, and/or siliceous), the hydrometallurgical route becomes uneconomic due to the excessive acid leaching costs. Some means of pre-concentration ahead of leaching is then desirable to improve the process economics. Apart from the small scale mining (Pan. Afr. News Agency, 2000) handpicking, although not easy, oxide concentration by flotation has been suggested. For the flotation process, the two most common approaches are controlled potential sulphidisation (CPS) and the fatty acid flotation method. The preferred method is dictated by the nature of the mineral makeup of the gangue. Being secondary deposits, the gangue associated with these ores is often complex and can play a significant role in the overall flotation efficiency. Laboratory flotation experience gained from the testing of a number of different ores of this type has revealed that it is not possible to prescribe a set method for the flotation of various ore types. Each ore needs to be analysed very carefully before and after laboratory flotation on an individual basis in order to arrive at an acceptable flotation technique Laboratory flotation testwork was carried out on three different samples from the DRC in attempts to isolate some of the more important variables affecting the flotation of copper and cobalt oxide minerals from these weathered deposits. This paper describes some early results achieved and experiences gained with these different ores ahead of a more detailed flotation test program which will follow in the near future on receipt of a significant quantity of a more representative sample. Controlled Potential Sulphidisation (CPS) was used in an attempt to achieve acceptable recoveries of both copper and cobalt.
