The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a research program on the characterization of tars produced by low-temperature carbonization of coal and their economical upgrading to more valuable materials, Throughout the years, hydrogenation has played an important role in the treatment of these tars, mainly as a means of converting the whole crude tar or selected fractions to motor fuels; diesel oil, lubricating oil, or various solvents. In some instances, production of specialty chemicals has been the objective. The purpose of this report is to summarize, without critical review, the information of the past 25 years on the hydrogenation of low-temperature tars and related substances as presented in the literature or its English translation. Published articles and patents not abstracted in the main body of this report are included in a bibliography at the end. HYDROGENATION REACTIONS The hydrogenation of tar follows three general types of reactions; 1. Recovery of uranium from slightly alkaline mine water, available in the Ambrosia Lake district of New Mexico, was studied using countercurrent ion exchange columns developed by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 5 million gallons of mine water containing 9 to 12 ppm U308 was treated by ion exchange using a 14-inch-diameter absorption column composed of five or six compartments each 4 feet deep. Uranium recoveries averaged in excess of 98 percent at solution flows ranging from 15 to 25 gallons per square foot per minute and resin loadings up to 3.6 pounds of U.08 per cubic foot. In subsequent tests, loaded resin was continuously eluted in a countercurrent elution column with a diameter of 4 inches and containing a bed of resin 9 feet deep. The resin was eluted to a residual loading of less than 0.06 pound of U305 per cubic foot, at a resin-retention time of 224 minutes, using only 1.9 volumes of 1.1 M NaCl-0.05 M NaHCO3 solution per volume of resin. Compared with existing ion exchange practices for recovering uranium from mine waters in the Ambrosia Lake district of New Mexico, use of these improved ion exchange contactors would reduce ion exchange resin requirements at least 70 percent and allow further substantial reductions in capital and operating costs.

A kinetic study of the carbon deposition reaction was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad investigation of metallurgical reactions in the iron ore blast furnace. The disproportionation of carbon monoxide on iron pellets was investigated at carbon monoxide pressures between 0.5 and 2 atmospheres (absolute) and temperatures from 400° to 1,075° C. Gas flow in the range from 0.25 to 0.85 standard liter per minute was found to have little effect on the reaction velocity. The addition of nitrogen and helium to caron monoxide exerted only a dilution effect on the rate of carbon deposition. However, an addition of 1 percent hydrogen increased the rate about 100 times. Small amounts of carbon dioxide in the inlet gas exerted little effect on the rate of carbon deposition. The maximum rate for carbon deposition in the first 2 hours occurred at 550° C. The apparent molar activation energies at various stages of the reaction were found to vary from 13 kcal initially to 36 kcal during the latter stages of the reaction. The reaction rate behavior was tentatively explained by an adsorption step followed by the diffusion of iron through a shell of inactive iron carbide.

Southeastern reserves of titanium ores are large, widespread, and ample for anticipated demand. The leading titanium industries are mining and beneficiating sand deposits, principally in Florida, and manufacturing titanium pigments. Most of the mineral output is consumed by the producers themselves. In 1962, 20 percent of the national pigment capacity was in the Southeast.

A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (DEI) on research and development. for laboratory, field and other engineering studies on the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included discussions on the peculiarities of retorted shale materials to be investigated and discussions of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I Program Development. II Exploratory Laboratory Tests on Old U.S.B.M. Retorted Shale. III Laboratory Tests on Pilot Plant Retorted Shales, IV Laboratory Tests on Retorted Shale from the Semi-Works Plant, Field, Test Plots and Ponds. V Field Compaction Tests. [The shrinkage of coke after formation is one of the variables that affects the net expansion of the change in both industrial and test ovens. Various test results have been interpreted as indicating that cokes from certain coals shrink to a marked extent and that other cokes show very little shrinkage; out no comprehensive experimental study of the shrinkage of coke after its formation and of the factors influencing this shrinkage has come to the attention of the authors. While investigating the reactivity of cokes made by the BM-AGA method,6/ Reynolds7/ found that granular low-temperature cokes shrink considerably then reheated to higher temperatures. This shrinkage was large enough to influence the behavior of the charge (net expansion or contraction) in a coke oven to a marked extent. Since that time the Bureau of nines has investigated the shrinkage of coke different methods, all of thick had one common objective - the elimination of the effect of other factors, such as swelling in the plastic range, which could either partly or completely mask the shrinkage of the coke. This publication summarizes the in-house and contract research and development projects programed for fiscal pear 1980 by the Bureau of Mines under its Minerals Environmental Research activity. The document provides a mechanism for interested parties, including potential contractors, to gain insight into ongoing and projected work of the Bureau's environmental research efforts. Research to identify and correct environmental problems associated with mining and metallurgical operations has long been an integral part of the Bureau's mission. Through the years, efforts of various Bureau programs have yielded valuable information on the origin and control of many of these problems. With the reorganization of the Bureau of Mines in 1979, the Minerals Environmental Technology program was structured to consolidate these efforts into a single program that will systematically investigate al aspects of mining- and processing-related environmental pollution and damage-from initial discovery of the mineral resource to ultimate return of the land to productive use. In fiscal year 1980, the Bureau received an appropriation of about $21 million to conduct research and development work on these problems.

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. 1962 was the second year of recovery from the mild 1960-61 recession. The year-to-year gain in constant dollar gross national product, our most comprehensive measure of the country's economic performance, was 6.0 percent (from $447.7 billion in 1961 to $474.8 billion in 1962). The unemployment rate declined from 6.7 percent to 5.6 percent. Although it was a good year, there were still unused resources of labor and capital which implied that the economy was operating below its potential. The year-to-year change in the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) index of industrial production of 7.6 percent masked the fact that more than one-third of the growth took place within 196L The monthly index rose only 4.8 percent during 1962, from 114.3 in January to 117.8 in September. The fact that the economy as shown by the industrial index, rose rapidly in the first half of the year only to remain on a plateau of 119-120 during the second half, led some people to fear an imminent downward turn. This did not occur. Neither production nor consumption of mineral fuels advanced as fast as the total economy. But consumption showed more gain than production, 5 percent compared with somewhat less than 4 percent. Production of both crude oil and natural gas reached new highs while bituminous coal production was the highest in 5 years.

STATISTICAL data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines and to their mills, and/or processing plants are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1960. The information pertains to metal mines, as well as ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries and reduction plants, and their auxiliary works. These data are voluntarily submitted annually to the Bureau of Mines by the operators, and contribute greatly toward the promotion of safety in the mineral industries. The data presented are classified according to the principal mineral produced and include information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, uranium-vanadium and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodities is shown in table 19, page 41. The data also relate to workers engaged in production, exploration, development, construction, and maintenance and repair work, as well as supervisory personnel and office- workers at the mine or plant site. The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral- material production or consumption.

Effective control of respirable dust is one of the most serious problems associated with longwall mining in the United States. This report describes the development and the underground evaluation of ventilated cutting drums, on a double ended ranging drum shearer. The ventilated drum uses high pressure (1,500 psi) water sprays to draw air (3,500 cfm) through 12 airmoving tubes mounted in the drum hub. The sprays draw dusty air from the face side of the drum, scrub the air, and discharge the clean air on the gob side of the drum against a deflector plate. During a three week underground evaluation, the cutting drums reduced shearer generated dust levels at the shearer operators position by 40%, at the shield operators downwind of the shearer by 55%, and at the tailgate by 55%. Cutting and loading performance of the drums were superior to the mine?s conventional drums. After the evaluation, the mine continued to use the ventilated drums to finish mining the panel. During this 3 month period, there were no mechanical or seal failures demonstrating excellent system reliability.

The effect of water infusion on the flow of methane and on the production of dust was investigated at an active face in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The average total flow of methane at the face decreased by approximately 79 percent, whereas the flow from the ribs increased about 24 percent after infusion. On the day after infusion, dust concentrations appear to have been reduced; however, the presence of large quantities of rock dust obscured the results on the following days.

Injury experience at coal mines and mechanical-cleaning plants (excluding officeworkers ) in 1967 was 222 fatal and 10,115 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an exposure time of 241.8 million man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 42-75 per million man-hours worked; the severity rate was 7,699 days lost or charged per million man-hours. Each of these general measures of injury experience was lower than similar data recorded for 1966. Employment at 6,885 coal mines and 569 mechanical-cleaning plants, excluding officeworkers, averaged 139,312 men in 1967. The average number of days worked was 220. Coal production totaled 560.8 million short tons, at rates of 2.32 tons per man-hour and 18.32 tons per man-day. A total of 2,779 onsite officeworkers at coal mines and mechanical- cleaning plants worked 5.2 million man-hours in 1967 without a disabling work injury.

Noise is one of the most pervasive health hazards in mining. A compilation of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) noise survey data for fiscal year 1990 shows that approximately 40% of the total samples taken for longwall occupations exceeded the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 100% (Gigliotti et al., 1991). To effectively determine worker noise exposures on longwall coal mining systems, it is necessary to provide accurate baseline measurements for these mining systems. This research was designed to develop measurement methods and test procedures for identifying noise sources that are major contributors to the underground noise exposure of longwall coal mining system workers. The measurement system that was used to analyze the noise sources around a stageloader used stationary dosimeters in a documented repeatable pattern to record the sound pressure and dose levels. A time-motion study of the cutting cycle and stageloader operator’s work cycle was done to correlate the sound levels at measurement locations and the resulting operator’s daily dose with significant noise events. Results from the underground measurements show that the highest sound levels recorded were at the stageloader discharge segment and tailpiece controls, where sound levels remained about the same throughout the test.

These proceedings consist of an introduction and four descriptive papers. The first paper is an update on fire protection for large haulage vehicles, the second paper is concerned with improved visibility systems for large haul- age vehicles, the third paper is on improved ladders for large haulage vehicles, and the fourth paper is concerned with large haul-age vehicle operator training systems.

Electrowon tungsten powders were investigated with respect to consolidation, fabrication, and mechanical properties. Sheet, 0.03 inch thick, was produced and its tensile strength measured between 250° and 1,935° C. The large particle size of electrowon tungsten effectively precluded sintering to a density sufficient to allow hot working to sheet or bar. The powders were consolidated by die pressing to 70-percent density, sheathing in molybdenum, and high-energy-rate extruding to either round or sheet bar of 100-percent density. The material was then rolled conventionally to sheet. The mechanical properties of the sheet prepared from the electrowon powders compared favorably with those reported in the literature for sheet prepared from commercially produced hydrogen-reduced powder.
