A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski County, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the eighth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is no followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations at those holes show on figure 13 in volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs at the drill holes. Many at the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and gra.de. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each halt township is given with the discussion covering that area.

"The electrostatic charge on spray droplets of ionic surfactant solutions and coal particles was measured and the results were correlated with the dust collection efficiency. When various surfactant were added, the magnitude of the droplet charge increased significantly and it was observed to be a function of surfactant type and concentration. The concentration of maximum droplet charge coincided with surfactant concentration where maximum collection efficiency was observed for these surfactants. Particles of coal also carried substantial amount of charge magnitude of which seemed to be a function of coal rank.Based on the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that ionic surfactant primarily act as a strong electrostatic charge inducer for droplets. Due to interactions between these highly charged droplets and naturally charged particles, the efficiency of droplet-particle collisions play a primary role when compared to the wetting and engulfment phenomenon which could only follow a successful collision. INTRODUCTIONWater spray are widely used to suppress airborne dust in mine atmospheres (Walton and Woolcock, 1960; Kobrick, 1970; Hamilton, 1974; Jayaraman et al., 1986). Several investigators have considered the use of surfactants to enhance the effectiveness of water sprays especially for difficult to wet particles such as those of coal (Glanville and Wightman, 1979). The capture of dust particles by water droplets involves droplet-particle collisions, adhesion of particles to droplets, and engulfment of particles into droplets. Surfactants affect these sub processes through their influence on droplet charge, surface tension, and wetting. The last two mechanism have been thoroughly studied in recent years (Walker et al., 1952; Cohen and Rosen, 1981; Glenville and Haley, 1982; Chander et al., 1988; 1991). However, little attention has been paid to the role of electrical charge on particles and droplets on the collision and adhesion of spray droplets and dust particles."

"This work was begun in l928, with the cooperation of the American, Gas Association, and the Association contributed financial aid for that year and for the 4 years following. In 1933 financial aid was discontinued, but the Advisory Committee, under the able, Chairmanship of J. S. Haug, has continued to function through the years to the present date. Mr. Haug's annual reports have been published in the Proceedings of the American Gas Association. The purpose of this paper is to bring the index of coals tested by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (EM-AGA) method up to date, to discuss development of auxiliary tests, and to outiline the uses to which the methods have been put in promoting the war effort.COALS TESTEDThe test methods developed with the advice of the Advisory Committee had been applied to 66 coals up to 1942, and an index giving the serial number, origin, and analyses of these coals was published as Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 637. Since this paper was published, 20 additional coals have been tested; the source and analyses of these coals are given in table 1. The table also refers to publications that have been issued. Complete series of tests at high, medium, and low temperatures,have been made on most of these coals, and blending tests with 20 and 30 30 percent of low-volatile coals have also been made at 900°C.; however a few low- and medium-volatile coals (60, 70, 74, 79, and 80) were bested,at high temperatures only. Those coals were mined in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. The test work included low- and high-temperature assay tests, petrorraphic analyses, and plasticity tests since its inception; and for the last 20 coals of the series, expansion and oxidation tests have been made where applicable."

Virtually every available measure of total world mineral industry activity demonstrated that 1982 was little, if any, better for the industry than 1981 had been. Levels of production, trade, and consumption for virtually every major commodity declined; unit prices for most commodities fell, particularly in terms of constant dollars, and as a result of cutbacks in output and lower prices, capital available for investment within the industry was reduced. These conditions, coupled with the existence of considerable idle capacity, tended to retard investment, although there was an upturn in U.S. oil industry investment overseas. Despite the overall depressed situation of the world's mineral industry, there were indications of possible improvements in market economy countries near yearend, as output of some materials increased marginally and as prices for some mineral commodities reversed their downward trends. The downturns in total world mineral industry activity were not universal from the viewpoint of individual countries. Indeed, output of a number of commodities increased in centrally planned economy countries, and these gains were insufficient to offset declines in market economy countries, thereby sharply altering the proportion of total world output accounted for by each of these two groups of countries. There was a similar shift in consumption on a percentage basis.

Low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies were determined calorimetrically for Na2Cr04, A reversible transition was found at 700° K with an isothermal heat of transition of 2,263 cal/mole. High-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the transition was a crystal change from the low-temperature orthorhombic form to the high-temperature hexagonal form. At 795° K the hexagonal form had the parameters a, = 5.691 and co = 7.478 A. Powder diffraction data for the high-temperature form are given and possible structures discussed. The melting point was determined to be 1,065° K with a heat of fusion of 5,810 cal/mole. Enthalpy and entropy increments from this investigation were combined with other data from the literature to calculate enthalpies of formation, free energies of formation, and equilibrium constants of formation from 298° to 1,400° K. Equations that represent enthalpies above 298° K are given.

The Bureau of Mines investigated alloys containing mischmetal (MM), cobalt, copper, magnesium, and iron for use in permanent magnets in place of the scarce samarium-cobalt alloys. The magnetic properties of MM-Co, MM-Co-Cu, MM-Co-Cu-Mg, and MM-Co-Cu-Fe-Mg alloys were evaluated. Magnets were fabricated by powder metallurgy consisting of arc-melting the metals, crushing and grinding the resultant alloys, alining and compacting the powder, and sintering the compacts. Magnetic values of MHc = 4.7 kOe, BHc = 4.07 kOe, Br = 6.81 kG, and (BH)max = 10.0 MGOe were obtained with a MM-Co alloy containing 36±0.5 wt-pct MM. By substituting copper and magnesium for part of the cobalt, the values for MHc and BHc were increased to 29.0 kOe and 5.89 kOe, respectively. This intrinsic coercivity value exceeded that of Sm-Co alloy obtained in our laboratory. The addition of iron to MM-Co-Cu-Mg alloys resulted in an increase of Br to 6.90 kG and (BH)max to 10.3 MGOe. Copper and magnesium contents of these alloys were optimized to obtain maximum values of MHc.

This was a study to identify and evaluate known technologies employing electromagnetic resonance phenomena in solid minerals for their identification and assaying, particularly assay logging of exploratory boreholes. A comprehensive literature search and study revealed some little known NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) techniques developed by Professor G. J. Béné's group at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. These are suitable for use in weak, inhomogeneous magnetic fields. Laboratory NMR tests of numerous U.S. ore minerals showed good identifying signals from phosphates, fluorspar, bauxite, oil shale, and spodumene (lithium) ores, but not from the copper, lead, antimony or manganese ores tested. Use of EPR "signatures" for such ores is suggested. A conceptual design for an NMR assay logging system is proposed.

The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East. The 15 countries that constitute the region accounted for 28% of world crude petroleum output, 17.2% of world natural gas plant liquid production, and 5.3% of world dry natural gas production. Only Cyprus and Lebanon were not crude petroleum producers. About 66% of total world crude petroleum reserves and 31 % of total world natural gas reserves are in the Middle East. Transportation and port facilities in the region are geared to expediting efficient and rapid shipment of these materials. Export sales of these fuels provide funding for further diversification of the mineral industry. Additional development of downstream facilities for producing energy-intensive metals such as aluminum and byproducts of the fuels such as petrochemicals and fertilizers can be expected. Earnings from the industry are also channeled by several Governments in the region to mineral industry projects in Africa and elsewhere. Several countries in the region own major petroleum refineries and distribution facilities worldwide. Petroleum prices rose overall during the year owing to the invasion by Iraq of Kuwait in August 1990. Output from both countries, the fourth and fifth largest producers, respectively, in the Middle East, was negatively affected by the war. Kuwaiti crude oil wells and pipeline facilities suffered extensive war damage while exports of petroleum and petroleum refinery products by Iraq ceased owing to a U.N. embargo. The embargo also impacted Jordan, an exporter of phosphate and potash. Shipments of crude petroleum by pipeline from Iraq through Saudi Arabia and Turkey and by vessel through the Persian Gulf were terminated. However, the loss in production from Iraq and Kuwait was more than made up by accelerated output from other Middle East and world producers. Saudi Arabia, in particular, with its excess production capacity, accounted for the largest portion of the increase.

The widespread use of toluene in industry and the importance of air analysis in industrial-hygiene surveys have created a need for a simple and accurate method for determining toluene vapor in air. Most of the methods used to determine small quantities of toluene in liquid or vapor form are based on the measurement of its physical properties. Methods based on fractional distillation, determination of specific gravity, use of the interferometer, use of the spectrograph, and sorption on solid sorbents with subsequent determination of gain in weight have been employed. Distillation and specific-gravity methods are not applicable to the small quantities of toluene found in the air, and use of the interferometer, spectrograph, and sorption methods either are not specific for toluene in the presence of other volatile substances or require expensive equipment.

"Preliminary examination of the Khayyam mine indicated that greater reserves of copper might be found by trenching, sampling, detailed geological and topographical mapping, and diamond drilling. The deposit seemed to be a potential source of sulfur, also, for use in the manufacture of paper pulp.Formal examination of the Khayyam mine by the Bureau of Mines was a follow-up of a preliminary examination made by W.S. Wright and the author on October 19-21, 1944. John Reed and W. S. Twanhofel, of the Geological Survey, visited the property during the summer of 1943 and suggested that the prospect be examined further.Preliminary examination of the Stumble-On claim was made July 1-3, 1945, concomitant with the formal examination of the Khayyam mine 11/2 miles to the west.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of lanes has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy, It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts pre¬liminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report, The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches arc under the supervision of Dr. R, S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is due Robert S. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Division, Mining Branch, for his help in the preparation of this report and during the project work.The Khayyam property is situated at 550 18’ north latitude and 1320 24’ west longitude on Prince of Wales Island in Southeastern Alaska. (see fig. 1.) The mine adit is 2,350 feet above sea level, near the summit of a mountain ridge, and 2.8 miles in an airline southwest of the head of McKenzie Inlet, a southern branch of Skown Arm. Skowl arm is navigable by ocean-going vessels .to the mouth of McKenzie Inlet, where reefs and rocky islands limit the channel width to 50 yards. Beyond this point the inlet widens to nearly half a mile. Coast and Geodetic Survey chart 8142 indicates from 12 fathoms of water at this narrow neck to more than 30 fathoms throughout the remainder of McKenzie Inlet, The old ore bunker and dock at the head. of the inlet are beyond repair. A new ore bunker and dock would have to be built if a large-scale mining operation were established.The mine can be reached by trail along the western ridge that lies on the west bank of Omar Creek. The trail is approximately 4 miles in length. The grade is rather steep to an elevation of 1,500 feet, but the last 21 miles can be traveled over gentle slopes along the crest of the ridge.Ketchikan is 30 miles by air and 42 miles by water from the head of McKenzie Inlet. Feed, hardware, fuel oil, lumber, and explosives can be purchased at Ketchikan and delivered by boat to McKenzie Inlet. By using an airplane, all small equipment and camp supplies could be using an airplane, all small equipment and camp supplies could be dropped with cargo parachutes near the mine."

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. Millar, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 5, 1943, accompanied by Dr. William Agar of the Federal Survey, and again on July 29, 1943, accompanied by Dr. A. F. Buddington and H.F. This Bureau of Mines report reviews hypotheses for the mechanism by which water jets reduce the specific energy of cutting for drag bits. Several of these hypotheses are shown to be inconsistent with published evidence and new observations. The notion of a limiting cutting speed, above which water jets would be incapable of rendering assistance, is shown to be improbable. The hypothesis that seems most plausible is that specific energy reductions are mainly due to the erosion of crushed materials from in front of the bit. This hypothesis leads to a prediction that, for a given rock type and jet-bit configuration at a constant depth of cut, the reduction in bit forces should be a function of dM/dx, the jet energy spent per unit length of cut. This dependence upon dW/dx is shown to be consistent with other workers? results.

1. The major sources of heavy metal ions in wastewaters of the Coeur d'Alene Mining District are effluents from metallurgical processing plants. Effluents from mine operations provide a secondary source for heavy metal ions. Based on data analyzed by the Federal Water Quality Administration, mercury and arsenic are escaping from some mill waste ponds, but they are in the suspended phase. 2. Metallurgical process effluents are combined with mine waste effluents in tailings ponds, consequently, the quality of the tailings pond decant water is highly degraded. The major effect of combining metallurgical process effluents with mill wastes is a drastic change of pH in the tailings pond. This chance may be an increase or a decrease depending on the metallurgical process. The effluent from an electrolytic antimony plant drastically increases the pH in the tailings pond permitting the removal in solution of antimony via the pond decant system. The addition of low pH effluents to the tailings ponds results in a net decrease in pH which makes lead, zinc, cadmium, and copper more soluble, thereby permitting their removal from the pond via the decant system.

The present status of the National Bureau of Standards program is that many magnetic tapes of analog data have been recorded in four major mines. Each mine uses different types of equipment. In addition, some surface measurements of noise have been made at two additional mines. Two types of recordings have been made: (1) broadband measurements for spectral plots and (2) narrowband measurements for amplitude probability density (APD) plots. Only data from one mine (Robena #4) has been processed and was, presented at this workshop. The short-term goals are: (1) finish processing data from the other mines, (2) establish or reduce measurement system uncertainties, (3) put Robella report into final form for distribution, and (4) hold a review to determine what has been done, to distribute and to interpret the preliminary data, and to determine what still needs to be done. Long-term goals are: (1) complete final reports on each of the mine trips, (2) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines already visited and establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions, and (3) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines that have not been visited (but that use similar equipment to those visited) and also establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions. Specific factors or formats to be presented include: (A) For underground broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 100 kHz spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 384 kHz spectral plots 3. 300 Hz to 192 kHz spectral plots 4. 300 Hz to 6kHz (subject to change to 3 or 12 kHz) spectral plots (B) For surface broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 6 kHz (or 12 kHz) spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 3 kHz spectral plots (C) For underground narrowband measurements : 1. APD plots at 12 frequencies from 10 kHz to 32 mHz of magnetic field strength 2. R. This report describes research directed toward the preparation of chemical oxygen (02) sources which exhibited improved 02 storage and reaction characteristics when compared to potassium superoxide (KO2). The initial focus of the research was the preparation of calcium superoxide (Ca(02)2) by the disproportionation of calcium peroxide diperoxyhydrate. The Ca(02)2) was characterized by chemical, thermal, and x-ray analyses. Several methods for scaling up the Ca(02)2 synthesis process were studied. Next, the reactivity of Ca(02)2 toward humidified carbon dioxide (C02) was evaluated and was compare o that of K02 under flow-test conditions approximating those existing in portable breathing apparatus. The reactivities of mixtures of K02 and Ca(02)2 or lithium peroxide towards humidified CO2 were also studied. Finally, an analysis of two commercial, K02-based, self-contained self-rescuers was conducted to determine the potential weight and volume savings which would be possible if Ca(02)2 or a mixture of K02 and Ca(02)2 were used as a replacement for K02.
