Potash from kelp.In this discussion very little more than passing reference, if any, will be given to those projects which up to date have been de¬veloped only slightly, if at all, beyond the small scale laboratory stage, or for the development of which there appears to be very little financial and technical backing at the present time. Nether or not many of these proposed projects have merit can be determined only by an actual operating demonstration.Generally speaking, the potash industry of the United States has been hardly more than marking time since the armistice. This is, largely due to the fact that the consumers of potash have been expecting that heavy shipments of foreign potash to the United States would be resumed soon at somewhere near the pre-war prices, and they have not been buying domestic potash at present prices for many months. The result has been that domestic producers have been unable to sell their product at even cost and many producers of potash have been obliged to close down. Thu Nebraska lake plants were closed down in February. The California saline plants were operating at below capacity, and the only large alunite plant is closed down. Even the cement plants have little or no inducements to recover the potash being lost in their waste gases, and the production is very small at present."

Low- temperature heat capacities of strontium chloride (7° - 300° K) and strontium fluoride ( 11 ° - 300 ° K) were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter . Smooth values of heat capacity , entropy , enthalpy function , and free - energy function were calculated from the heat - capacity data . The smooth values are reported at 10 ° K intervals and at 273.15 ° and 298.15 ° K.

The original work statement of this contract was entitles: 'A Accident Analysis Model for Use in Underground Coal Mines.' The contract was scheduled for a duration of 26 months and was to be in three phases: Phase I - Model Development, Phase II - Application of the Model, and Phase III - Installation, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Model. Alter three months in Phase I, it became apparent that much of the needed data for the model was nut available and could not be made available within the original study schedule. Proceeding as plumed would have resulted in a model of limited utility. Personnel from Theodore Barry and Associates and the Bureau discussed the problem in detail and mutually decided to utilize the majority of remaining funds to assist the Bureau in solving these data problems and develop a stronger ongoing capability for safety analysis within the Bureau. Both tie contractor and the bureau officials involved believed that this decision greatly enhanced the Bureau's ability to develop future accident prediction models, whose rigor would greatly exceed what was currently possible.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned & name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled except the deep holes drilled to test geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes are shown on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

Enthalpies above 298° K were investigated for four crystalline sodium borates by copper-block drop calorimetry. Determinations were made to 1,200° K for NaB02, 1,003° K for Na2B407, 1,005° K for NaB305, and 1,046° K for Na2Be013. No phase transitions or other thermal anomalies were found. The enthalpy determinations, when combined with known heats of formation at 298° K and other supplementary data, enabled the calculation of the heats and free energies of formation of the compounds to their melting points. Values of relative enthalpies, entropies, heat capacities, free energy functions, enthalpies of formation, free energies of formation, and equilibrium constants of formation were tabulated at even temperatures.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes some recent results on the sensitivity of various experimental explosive systems using ammonium nitrate (AN) as the oxidizing agent. The sensitivity survey included drop-weight and friction testing and sensitivity to initiation by projectile impact and a No.8 blasting cap. It was found that certain types of AN prills can result in cap-sensitive mixtures when combined with No.2 diesel fuel (Fa); prilled AN mixed with nitromethane also result in cap-sensitive mixtures. Mixtures of AN prills and neat 1-and 2-nitropropane were not cap-sensitive, and the use of powdered or grained aluminum in AN-FO did not adversely affect the sensitivity except possibly to increase its sensitivity to friction.

Real economic growth for 1988 may fall short of the 3.3% projected by the U.S. Department of Commerce in August 1988 be-cause the summer drought and intense heat in many areas curtailed output more severely than expected. The economy grew at an average annual rate of 3.0% for the first three quarters of the year, slowing in the second and third quarters. Export growth, which occurred even as the dollar edged up com-pared with other industrial country currencies, was an important factor in the expansion. Notable gains were posted in sales of machinery, computers, aircraft, chemicals, and telecommunications equipment. Imports increased, but not as much as exports, and the U.S. trade position was still much improved from that of 1987. Personal consumption expenditures grew slightly faster than the economy as a whole. Purchases of consumer durables showed notable strength in the first half of 1988, but slowed down in the third quarter. [ ] Despite the moderate rise in interest rates, business spending for new plant and equipment also rose and contributed to 1988 gross national product (GNP) growth. Both new business investment and export demand spurred orders for U.S.-made machine tools. Orders for machine tools for the first 8 months of 1988 were almost triple those for the corresponding period in 1987.

In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

The Krueger property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943. The records of 23 old drill holes indicated an appreciable body of ore without delimiting the deposit. It appeared that additional drilling might increase this reserve sufficiently to justify mining. Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines drilled 5 churn-drill holes and 19 diamond-drill holes on the Krueger tract. The last of these holes concluding the Bureau?s project was completed in April 1947.

The vibration and impact environment for crew members on locomotives has been investigated in a series of studies conducted by Exponent Failure Analysis Associates (Exponent) beginning in 1990. Locomotive cab vibration and impact levels were measured on a variety of locomotive models operating over many different track sections across the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and CONRAIL systems. The comfort and health implications of exposure to the measured locomotive vibration levels were evaluated by comparison with the human vibration exposure boundaries given in the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 2631-1:1997, the British Standard 6841:1987, European Union (EU) Directive 2002/44/EC, measurements made by Exponent on various commercial and recreational vehicles, and vibration exposure measurement data found in the literature. Methods Initially, vibration levels experienced by locomotive crews were measured and recorded at incremental speeds covering the range of normal train operation. In 2003, a method of measuring the vibration exposure continuously by means of a digital recorder was developed, allowing the vibration level over the entire run or crew shift to be analyzed. For each seating location measured, acceleration was recorded on the seat surface beneath the ischial tuberosities (pelvis) of the seated crew member and on the cab floor directly under the seat. At each of the locations, triaxial accelerometers were used to measure the vibration along the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes. Since the vibration environment varies throughout the route, and locomotive vibration levels have been found to be primarily speed dependent, a speed sensor was used to continuously measure the speed of the train. To evaluate the recorded vibrations levels, the data was divided into two-minute segments, which were each processed per the 1997 ISO standard for weighted RMS vibration levels and Vibration Dose Values (VDV). Additionally, PSDs and 1/3 Octave RMS values were calculated to determine the frequency content of the vibration. For each two-minute segment, the average speed of the locomotive was calculated to allow for correlation with the recorded vibration exposure values. The resulting exposure values for the entire run were calculated by combining the data from all of the two-minute segments. Since introducing the continuous method of recording acceleration, 23 seating locations have been recorded on 11 locomotives traveling 11 different routes across various parts of the United States. One of the routes was a shift of ‘yard work’, traveling back and forth in a rail yard coupling train cars together. "Occurrences of fluorite on the Packard property were first examined by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Mines in July 1943 as the result of receipt of an application for an access road. In August of the same year the showings were examined by a geologist4/ of the Federal Geological Survey. The property was again examined by an engineer5/ of the Bureau of Mines in March 1944. This last examination resulted in a proposal that access be gained by construction of a truck trail and that the Bureau of Mines undertake to explore the fluorite showings.The truck trail was constructed by the Public Roads Administration, which began the work on February 17, 1945, and completed it 8 days later.The Bureau of Mines exploratory program was completed on May 16, 1945. It consisted of stripping overburden, trenching, test pitting, tunneling, sampling, and topographic mapping.In addition to being described in some detail, the extent of the work as well as results are shown in accompanying tables and figures.Mrs. Rhoda A. Packard, Mrs. Nora 1. Cline, and C. B. Pettingill, all of Tonto Basin, Ariz., own the property, which comprises four contiguous, unpatented lode mining claims recorded at Globe, Ariz., as the Walnut and the Bluebird 2, 3, and 4. The claims are situated in T. 6 N., R. 11 E., Gila County. David L. Roscoe of Tombstone, Ariz., holds a lease and option to purchase.Access to the property is by Highway 88 from Globe, 34 miles to Roosevelt, thence 24 miles by a graded county road along the west side of Roosevelt Lake to Tonto Basin. Here the Greenback Ranch road, constructed by the Forest Service and maintained by the county, crosses Tonto Creek and continues easterly to the foothills. The truck trail leaves the road 8.5 miles east of Tonto Basin and runs 2.5 miles in a southerly direction to the property. (Fig. 1.)The fluorite deposits lie in and along a small canyon in a rough, rocky area at an altitude of about 3,400 feet, Vegetation is scant and of the usual desert variety. The summer climate is dry and hot and the winter climate moderate. Rainfall at the Forest Service Station in Tonto Basin was 11.4 inches from May 1944 through March 1945."

Introduction Industrial exposure to whole-body vibration is associated with injury and discomfort. Certain industries, notably mining, construction, and forestry, involve complex 6 degrees of freedom vibration. Laboratory-based studies of vibration are essential for controlled and systematic evaluation of the human responses to vibration2. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate whether the duration of the vibration exposure, and rest between vibrations, significantly influence the subjective ratings of comfort during laboratory-based studies of vibration. Methods Subjects: The cumulative vibration dose was calculated, and was below the health guidance caution zone recommended by International standards3. The experimental procedures were approved by the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board. Ten adult subjects participated in this pilot experiment. All subjects completed the entire experimental paradigm; no subjects complained of pain during or after the experiment. Experimental Design: The experiment consisted of four blocks of vibration exposures; either 15 or 20 seconds of vibration (1 df:Z axis, 3 df:XY plane, 3df:YZ plane, or 6 df) alternating with either 5 or 10 seconds rest. The order of presentation of the four blocks was randomized. Each of the blocks was composed of 37 individual sinusoidal vibration exposures in randomized sequence. This abstract focused on ten identical trials, (6.3 Hz vertical vibration, 0.55 m/s2 RMS) interspersed within each block, in order to assess whether the subjects’ comfort ratings systematically varied between the 15 or 20 vibration exposures, the 5 or 10 second rest between vibrations, or within each block. The experiment involved 43 minutes of vibration within the 62 minute experiment. Vibration Apparatus: A commercial parallel robotic platform was used to apply the specific vibration exposures (R2000, Parallel Robotics Systems Corporation, Hampton, New Hampshire). The subjects sat on a passenger seat from a 1992 Honda Accord that was rigidly mounted to the robotic platform (Figure 1). This robotic system performed the specific vibration exposures operating under closed-loop displacement control. A custom-written Matlab program automated the testing sequence.

Synthetic fluorphlogopite mica (KMg3AlSi3010F2) is a relatively new product developed at the Norris (Tenn.) Station of the Bureau of Mines, Thermodynamic data have applications both in the production and use of this product, and the work described in this paper was undertaken to fill the need for such data. Measurements were made of the heat of formation at 298° K., the heat capacity between 50° and 298° K., the entropy at 298° K., and the heat-content and entropy increments between 298° K. and a maximum of 1,804° K. These basic data are combined to obtain heats and free energies of formation of the mica from the elements and from molecular constituents at temperatures ranging from 298° to 1,800° K. Minimum heat requirements to form melted mica from commonly used ingredients were calculated.

The Victorville cement plant of the Southwestern Portland Cement Co. is located about 1 mile from the city of Victorville, Calif. Two transcontinental railway systems, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and the Southern Pacific Railroad, afford shipped facilities. The plant is modern and well kept, as the officials, especially the higher operating officials, take pride in the appearance of the place. Dust has been practically eliminated by the installation of dust collectors and wet grinding. The plant has a rated capacity of 5,000 barrels of cement daily.

RECORD production of portland cement, crushed limestone, marble, lime, and clays highlighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1959. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in production of bauxite, and third in output of iron ore, scrap mica, and native asphalt. Alabama's mineral industry was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and iron ore, which accounted for 51 percent of the total value of production in 1958 and 1959. Other important industries were cement manufacturing, petroleum, and stone quarrying. Leading companies were Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of United States Steel Corp. (coal;. iron ore, limestone, lime, and magnesium compounds), Southern Cement Co. Division of American-Marietta Co. (cement, lime, limestone, and miscellaneous clay) , Woodward Iron Co. (coal and iron ore), Alabama Power Co. (coal), and Ideal Cement Co. (cement lime, and miscellaneous clay) .

Research performed on computer modeling of mine power systems under USBM Grant G0155003 1S described. The work was performed at the Pennsylvania State University from 5 November 1975 through 4 November 1976. Results presented are interim in nature, and future research is planned to integrate the simulations which have been developed. The thrust of this research has been divided into three main areas. 1. Modification of a previously developed model (Mine Power System Simulation or MPSS) to include interactive operation and the use of default (average) load data. 2. Development of a dynamic simulation of interdependent mine power system induction motors. 3. Development of an approach to modeling of motor shaft loading of induction machines for mining operations. During the course of the current year's research, significant results have been achieved in all areas. Construction of an interactive MPSS model has been completed and checked. This simulation was written in APL code and is fully interactive. In addition, default data representing 158 different pieces of mining equipment has been developed for use with the interactive model. Additional work described includes the construction of a dynamic simulation of interdependent continuous miner induction motors and the development of an approach fo: motor shaft load torque computation from experimental data.

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, USBM reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that: appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in "" proceedings of conventions and seminars; in' reference books; and in other non-USBM publications. This Bureau of Mines report examines the percentage depletion allowance rate structure in relation to several criteria that are indicative of U.S. mineral import dependence. These criteria are the minerals considered as strategic and critical for stockpiling purposes, the ratio of reserves to forecast cumulative demand (1976-2000) for selected minerals, and the U.S. net import reliance as a percentage of apparent consumption (1978), also for selected minerals in general, it was Found that there does exist a direct, although not perfect, relationship between the percentage depletion allowance rates and the degree of import dependence as indicated by these three criteria. The higher percentage rates tend to he associated with those minerals for which the United States is, or will likely he, heavily dependent on foreign sources. In addition, a basic discussion of the mineral depletion allowance is provided, including numerical examples illustrating the computation of the allowance under several assumptions. Also, the percentage depletion allowance rates for individual minerals are tabulated.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1993 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. For the continent as a whole, world shares of most commodities showed little change from those of 1992 although most output volumes showed a slight decline. There were no significant production increases, but there were significant decreases of cobalt and copper because of political instability in Zaire and production problems in Zambia, of chromite resulting from cutbacks in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and of phosphate rock owing to a lower output by producers in general. (See tables 1 and 2.) Among the most significant mineral commodities produced in Africa, ranked by portion of world production in 1993, were diamond, cobalt, chromite, gold, phosphate rock, manganese ore, uranium and petroleum. Others of importance in world trade were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, coal, copper, fluorspar, lithium minerals, platinum-group metals (PGM), titanium minerals (ilmenite and rutile), vanadium, vermiculite, and zircon. Several of these-chromite cobalt, diamond, and manganese-were not produced in the United States.
