The metallic sulphides in Jinchuan Mine are relative friable and the gangue minerals suffer of wide secondary change, the overgrinding of metallic sulphides and sliming of gangue minerals are the main cause that makes the mineral separation indexes difficult to improve. So changing the process of grinding, and classification, and optimizing the particle size distribution of grinding product is the key improving the separation performance of Jinchuan nickel and copper ore.

"Phosphate ore is one of the most significant secondary resources for rare earth elements (REEs), and Florida phosphate is of particular interest due to its much higher ratio of heavy REEs, especially yttrium. Analyses of numerous samples from different phosphate processing streams in Florida showed that heavy REEs account for about 50% of the total REEs in Florida phosphate with yttrium accounting for approximately 30%. It was estimated that the amount of yttrium from US phosphate processing could meet the world demand for this critical element. This research aimed at recovering both REEs and phosphorus from a phosphate flotation tails. This tails is composed of mainly silica and phosphate with a small fraction of heavy minerals including monazite and xenotime. Since the specific gravity of silica is 2.6 versus 3.2 for phosphate and 4.5-5 for rare earth minerals, pre-concentration of the minerals of interest by gravity separation was investigated first. A pilot scale shaking table was used in this study. One pass gravity concentration achieved a shaking table concentrate analyzing over 600 ppm REEs at about 40% recovery. Flotation of the shaking table concentrate resulted in a product containing 1809 ppm REEs and 26.37% P2O5 with corresponding recoveries of 73% and 82%. Sulfuric acid leaching at 75oC could recover over 60% REE and nearly all the P2O5. Higher REEs (>90%) recovery was achieved by conducting leaching at higher temperature with concentrated sulfuric acid. The phosphoric acid from leaching of the flotation concentrate is of superior quality compared with that generated from regular phosphate rock.INTRODUCTION Rare earths are a group of 17 elements including those of the lanthanum series, as well as the non-lanthanides, yttrium and scandium. These elements have very specific critical uses in a multitude of markets. For example, lanthanum is used as a catalyst in breaking down crude oil to produce gasoline, diesel and jet fuel and neodymium is the core magnetic component in high-strength magnets for electric car batteries, wind turbines and hard disk drives. Rare earths are also essential for many military applications. Many of these applications have no substitute materials and the move to green technologies has dramatically increased their demand."

Most Chinese titanium bearing minerals are the composition of magnetite vanadium and ilmenite. All of such mineral processing plants use low intensity magnetic separators to recover magnetite and vanadium goes with magnetite. In the past years most of the plant tails containing about 10% TiO2 were abandoned. Now many of these plants use SLon magnetic separators to recover ilmenite in the roughing stage, which can throw away most of the gangs and slimes with very low cost. The new development of applications of SLon magnetic separators in Chinese ilmenite processing industry is introduced in the paper.

China is rich in iron ore resources, but most of these ores are low-grade, polymetallic and refrac-tory ones. Furthermore, with the rapid development of chinese iron & steel industry, the comprehen-sive recovery of these ores is becoming more and more important. The tin, zinc-containing complex iron ores are typical polymetallic and intractable ones, and great reserves of them are found in China. At present, they have not been efficiently utilized. In this paper, based on the investigation of basic physicochemical properties of the tin, zinc-bearing iron concentrates, taken from a mineral processing plant, the mineralogy reason that these concentrates are so intractable and refractory is found out, using advanced microscopic testing methods, such as optical microscope (OM), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM), X-ray diffrac-tion (XRD), etc. It is found that the symbiotic relationship of iron, tin and zinc metallic minerals are very complicated, and magnetite in the concentrate is closely symbiotic or enwrapped by fine cassi-terite and sphalerite. So it is difficult to separate tin and zinc completely from the iron concentrates by simple regrinding and physical separation method. This investigation provides theoretical guid-ance for developing new approaches for utilizing these concentrates.

The present study aimed to investigate the depyritization of coal using iron oxidizing and sulphur oxidizing acidophilic chemolithotrophic microorganisms in an iron free 9K growth medium at varying pulp densities. Three different coal samples used in the shake flask study from three different countries such as domestic anthracite (Korean), Indonesian and Chinese lignite. Experiments were carried out in batch at a controlled temperature of 35 °C and varied pulp densities of 8%, 10% and 12% (w/v) with a working volume of 100 ml containing 10 ml of microbial inoculum and 90 ml of the iron free 9K growth medium. Coal samples were crushed and ground to fine size fractions <100 microns by attrition mill wet grinding. The progress in the experiments were followed by the regular measurements of pH, redox potential, viable planktonic cell count, residual Fe2+ ion concentration, amount of acid addition and amount of slaked lime addition. The pyritic sulfur removal percentage varied between 90-95% with highest sulfur removal with China coal (95%) followed by Korean Coal (93-94%) and slightly lower level for Indonesia coal (90%). However the pyrite oxidation was highest for Korean coal ranging between 78-80% followed by a similar level of pyrite oxidation of 50-61% for the Chinese and Indonesian coal. It was found that 10-12% pulp density would be fairly feasible for all the different coals tested leading to an economical process. Another benefit from this study is the iron free 9K growth medium, which will reduce the operation cost and overall it?s an environment friendly process.

2-hydroxy-3-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name F203 is a good collector of cassiterite, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name ZJ-3. F203 and ZJ-3 are similar series of isomers. They have similar naphthye, and similar series of functional OH and ?CONHOH, but the seat of OH and ?CONHOH group are different, on the F203 is 2.3; on the ZJ-3 is 1.2, ortho position too. According to Isomeric principle ZJ-3 is a good collector of cassiterite slime too. Using ZJ-3 as collector flotation -10µm occupies 90%, grade 1.16% Sn cassiterite slime of Da Chang Chehe concentration plant, pass one coursing flotation, two cleaning and one scarenging flotation, and obtains grand 18.26% Sn, recovery 92.68% cassiterite concentrate. The result proves the Isomeric principle of flotation reagents is correct again. This principle may supply to synthetize new flotation reagents reference. This paper presents the outcomes of the preliminary investigation focused on the potential usage of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in minerals processing. Currently, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy has been successfully employed in the characterization of multilayer structures formed as molecules adsorb on flat surfaces and is commonly used in bio-related research. Few studies have explored the application of EIS in minerals processing, particularly for mineral particles and flotation systems. In the first series of tests, the impedance response was investigated as a function of particle size, shape and hydrophobicity using model quartz particles. The particle size fractions and the shape were found to contribute to the impedance response. The more hydrophobic quartz particles resulted in a higher impedance values. Further tests involved pure sulfide minerals including chalcocite, bornite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. The AC impedance measurements were conducted as a function of collector (sodium ethyl xanthate) dosage. The AC Impedance data was modeled using the combination of reference circuits. It has been shown that adsorption of collector onto sulfide minerals surfaces results in a higher magnitude of impedance. Increasing the collector dosage resulted in an increase in AC impedance for chalcopyrite, while a decrease was observed for chalcocite. Significant variations in impedance were exhibited by bornite and pyrite with a gradual increase in collector dosage.

The surficial collapse pits of the mining areas are continuously spreading in Beiminghe iron mine of Hebei Province as a result of the exploitation, which has done a lot of damage to the circumjacent ecological environment of the mine. It is a new path to handle the mine tailings at the present time that the thickened tailings are used to backfill the collapse pits, in which way the problems of the surficial collapse and the nowhere discharge of the tailings are both solved, and the rational utilization of the mine tailings and the clean production of the mine enterprise are realized. The?200 mesh content of the tailings of Beiminghe iron mine is 76.87%, and?325 mesh content is 63.50%. Semi-industrial dehydration experiments to the tailings have been done using the hydro-cyclone classified thickening process. The results show that when FX125 hydrocyclone is adopted, the concentration of underflow can achieve 73.31%, and the yield ratio is 61.78%; when FX150 hydrocyclone is adopted, the concentration of underflow is 70.57%, and the yield ratio is 54.31%, which indicate that the minor diameter hydrocyclone is propitious to improve the yield ratio of the underflow. The semi-industrial dehydration system of hydrocyclone classified thickening process is com-posed of FX125 hydrocyclone, D3600 high-efficient thickener and D2000 thickening bucket. The capacity to tailings disposal can achieve 3.07t/h and the tailings can be thickened from 28.86% to 62.45%. Compared with the traditional thickening-filtrating process and the total tailings directly filtrating process, the hydrocyclone classified thickening process has the merits of simple flow and high thickening efficiency, so it is easy to be realized in the mine.

Calcium carbonate/Titanium dioxide composite, characterized by coating TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles, is an important substitute for titanium dioxide. This paper studies preparation method of CaCO3/TiO2 ,composites based on mechano-chemical effects, measures its properties as a pigment, analyzes the binding form and interface reaction mechanism between CaCO3 and TiO2. Through single finely grinding of CaCO3, co-grinding of CaCO3 together with TiO2, and mecha-no-chemical effects produced in the course of grinding, CaCO3/TiO2 composites can be prepared successfully. Results indicate that grinding fineness of CaCO3, co-grinding time of CaCO3 and TiO2, the weight ratio of grinding media to mineral feeding, and the amount of TiO2 have much influence on the properties of CaCO3/TiO2 composites. CaCO3/TiO2 composites have the properties same as titanium dioxide pigment, oil adsorption and ultraviolet adsorption same as TiO2, and 90% of hiding power as that of TiO2. Wet grinding of CaCO3 causes the production of mechano-chemical effect and hydroxyl group, through which CaCO3 and TiO2 can be bonded together. Repulsion occurs between the particles of CaCO3 and the particles of TiO2, respectively, they are both in good dispersion. But attraction occurs between CaCO3 and TiO2. TiO2 particles are distributed evenly on the surface of CaCO3. Therefore, coating of TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles and chemical bond between them make CaCO3/TiO2 compo-sites have pigment properties of Titanium.

"IsaMill™ has been in operation in the recent past for fine grinding of low grade ores to extract non-ferrous minerals. IsaMill™, typically, consists of a series of uniformly spaced identical disks mounted on a rotating shaft which is encased in an outer shell. The mill offers high energy efficiency for fine grinding and an inherent scalability. But, it encounters certain operational challenges such as non-uniform distribution of grinding media coupled with high wear rate of the disks and solid walls of the mill at specific locations—which adversely affect the mill performance. To circumvent these operational challenges, design modification of the disks through heuristics, by introducing a reduced diameter disk (RDD) at specific locations, is a common practice in industry. But there is no systematic scientific study in this regard. In the current work, we developed a discrete element method (DEM) based model and simulated for the IsaMill™ operation to study the effect of RDD on the efficiency of the mill and wear rate of the solid walls and disks. Since the first set of disks experience the high wear rate due to the high loading of the charge, the RDD was introduced at the first two disks. The simulations were performed at different diameters of the RDDs and at different media loadings. The performance of the mill was analyzed based on the power consumption, the wear rate on disks and the distribution of media particles inside the mill. Besides, the performance variables such as mean velocity of media particles and total impact energy provided useful insights into the milling operation. It was observed that the reduction in disk diameter yields lower wear rate of the disks at the cost of decrease in power draw at a constant high media loading. Whereas, when the media loading was decreased, the amount of wear and power drawn was comparable for both the most reduced and least reduced disk diameters. Therefore, there is an optimum choice of RDD for a given mill loading to maximize the mill performance while reducing the wear rate of the disks."

Extensive exploration for uranium metal by the Department of Atomic Energy in India led to the discovery of new carbonate host rock uranium deposits Tummalapalle and Gogi, which are located in southern part of India. Alkaline leaching at elevated temperature and pressure using autoclave is the central unit process in the overall strategy for extraction of uranium from these new ore deposits. Autoclave leaching is affected largely by intrinsic nature of the ore and by the process variables and the equipment settings. In order to understand such a complex process and also to be able to predict the process performance under randomly (ore grade, uranium mineralogy, gangue mineralogy etc.) and consciously perturbed variable settings (partial pressure of oxygen, temperature, concentration of leachant, stirring speed and time), sound and robust mathematical models are needed with analytical and/or numerical solutions. Present investigation attempts to develop a variant of kinetic correlation based on shrinking core model for batch alkaline leaching process in an autoclave. The leaching model incorporates particle size distribution according to popular Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation, rather than assuming a single mean size for all the particles participating in the leaching reaction. Kinetic experimental data generated in autoclave leaching of Gogi uranium ore was used to evaluate various constants of the model developed. The ore sample used for experiments assayed 0.21 per cent U3O8. The partial pressure of oxygen was varied between 0.15 to 6.5 atm, temperature from 343 K to 438 K, concentration of sodium carbonate leachant in the range 0.47 g mol/L to 0.94 g mol/L, and the stirring speed from 573 rev/min to 900 rev/min in the experiments. The goodness of fit of the leaching process model is found to be >0.95. Morphological studies carried out on leached and unleached particulate matter using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X ray analyses are included in the present study.

This paper describes the investigative studies carried out at Vale´s Center of Mineral Development (CDM) for a nickel sulfide deposit aiming to develop an adequate flotation flowsheet. The CDM facilities comprises of very well equipped laboratories to develop hydrometallurgical, comminution, flotation, physical separation processes, besides chemical and mineralogical laboratories, that are required to accomplish pre-feasibility studies, new process routes developments and, eventually, brownfield projects. Close association of the flotation group with the geometallurgy and the mineralogy teams play a key role during greenfield project development. Most of the information required by process engineers responsible for the flowsheet development can be provided by the mineralogy team and its mineralogical laboratory at CDM. During the flowsheet development of this nickel sulfide deposit, two ore types were identified as the most abundant in the deposit, named biotite-chlorite hydrothermalite (HID) and magnetite hydrothermalite (MAG HID). Six samples were selected for the investigative studies based on this initial information. Nickel grade varied from 0.39% to 1.95%. The main nickel-bearing minerals were millerite and pentlandite whereas the main non-sulphide gangue minerals were quartz, plagioclase, biotite, chlorite, actinolite, and/or magnetite. Electron microprobe (EMP) identified the presence of nickel in solid solution in gangue minerals such as biotite, chlorite, and actinolite. Nickel deportment in silicates varied from 3% to almost 40%. Magnesium was distributed in biotite and chlorite, except in sample MAG HID, in which talc was responsible for almost 50% of the Mg content. Liberation studies indicated that the optimum feed grind size was around 150µm and that pyrite occurred highly associated to the nickel sulfides. The flotation tests were planned based on the information provided by the mineralogical data. Rougher flotation tests indicated that the optimum P80 of the primary grind was 212µm for the HID type and 150µm for the MAG HID. From the reagents tested, amyl xanthate proved to be the most efficient in the recovery of the sulfides. In the MAG HID sample talc was well depressed by dosing 600g/t of CMC. Nickel recoveries in the rougher stage were lower than 90% due to the nickel distributed in silicates. However, sulfur recovery was around 95%, indicating high recovery of the total sulfides. Open circuit and locked cycle tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of the regrind size in the nickel grade and recovery (P80 of 44µm and 20µm). Nickel recovery decreased from 70% to 65% when finer regrind size was tested. Although nickel recovery decreased by 5%, the finer regrind size lead to a higher Ni grade (from 11% to 23%Ni) and lower fluorine grade (from 1138ppm to 700ppm) in the concentrate. The process of liquid?liquid extraction of gold from chloride solution is complicated by the presence of many variables acting simultaneously in an unknown non-linear fashion for the determination of the final extraction efficiency. In practice, it is quite difficult to develop a model for predicting various properties of such process. Therefore, an alternative approach based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is considered to assist in the simulation process. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are powerful tools that can be used to model and investigate various highly complex and non-linear phenomena. This paper presents application of Multi-Layer Perceptions (MLP) to construct relationship that will be employed to develop a quantitative method for the estimation of the extraction efficiency as a function of hydrodynamical parameters such as stirrer speed, [AuCl4]- and DBC concentration, organic and aqueous flow rate. The model is shown to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data (R2 value for training and testing data was 0.9992 and 0.9915 respectively). Therefore, it can be used to optimize the parameters of liquid?liquid gold extraction with dibutyl carbitol (DBC).

"Due to the influence of combustion conditions, the fly ash produced by some power plants has the problem of high-carbon content. The unburned carbon in fly ash can be removed by flotation, and the decarbon tailings should reach the national standard level I fly ash. The fineness of the requirement is one of the important indicators and is also an important factor affecting the tail ash activity. In this paper,adopting two methods investigate the effect of particle size on the flotation index: one is direct flotation of fly ash, and the other way is wet grinding + flotation of fly ash, comparing the two methods and selecting the appropriate process,which provides a way for the effective utilization of fly ash. INTRODUCTION Fly ash is a solid waste discharged from coal-fired power plants. The annual amount of emissions of fly ash are very large in China. The amount of fly ash were discharged from coal-fired power plants are increasing gradually, and the amount of fly ash stored has exceeded 2.5 billion tons, but the comprehensive utilization of fly ash is not high, which brings about a huge environmental problems( Lu et al.,2011). Carbon is a harmful component of fly ash in cement and concrete application (Zhang et al.,2008). Fly ash decarburization is an essential link to improve the utilization efficiency of fly ash and the reduce pollution ( Yang et al.,2012). Carbon is selected from fly ash to make full use of fly ash resources and improve utilization of fly ash (Li et al.,2008). In this paper, the flotation decarburization of high-carbon fly ash is studied, through comparing the grinding and not-grinding processes, optimizing the separation process of fly ash, which provides a way for the effective utilization of fly ash."

Flotation of chalcopyrite and unactivated malachite with xanthates (ethylxanthate, butylxanthate, octylxanthate and dodecylxanthate) is studied in this paper. Minerals interacted with xanthates are detected by FTIR, and simulated by molecular mechanics. It shows that chalcopyrite can be floated with 4 kinds of xanthates, and unactivated malachite can?t be floated with ethylxanthate but can be floated directly with later 3 kinds of xanthates while characteristic absorption peaks of those four kinds of xanthates are all detected by FTIR on chalcopyrite and malachite surface. After simulating the interaction between xanthate and mineral, it shows that H2O and OH-can interact with chalcopyrite and malachite, and their interaction energy may be so called energy bulwark which must be overcome by collector when collector interacts on minerals; the two sulfur atoms in xanthate group interact with copper and neighbor iron atoms on chalcopyrite. It also shows that molecular mechanics results with logP of collectors can interpret the mechanism of xanthate-mineral on atom scale.

The methodology of active pulsing air separation is a new method for dry material classification. Especially, it is suitable to electronic scraps disposal and re-utilization. By studying the difference of drag coefficients of the particles moving through areas of varying Reynolds numbers, and considering the extra-mass forces acting on the particles in the active pulsing air field, models of the dynamic motion which particles follow were developed. A computer simulation was prepared that showed the traces of particles with different densities and/or diameters, but similar aerodynamic characteristics, as they moved through the turbulent flow, to modify and define the parameters of the models. The simulation was found to predict the observed results with artificial tracing spheres being separated by the laboratory equipment. The separation performance, as being affected by the particles, nature, the air velocity, the pulsing frequency and the air pattern, is discussed. In general, lower density particles are more responsive to variations in airflow velocity. In addition, an industrial scale active pulsing air separator was designed, and it provides a new and efficient method for resource re-utilization in China.

Micro-flotation tests of spodumene, beryl, quartz and feldspar have been carried out by using CaCl2 and FeCl3 as modifiers and a blending collector of oleic acid and hydroximic acid. CaCl2 shows efficient activation for spodumene when pH is above 11.5, and FeCl3 exhibits a markedly activation and good selectivity for spodumene in the range of pH 4 to 10. The main species of CaCl2 are CaOH+ and Ca(OH)2 when pH is above 11.5, and the main species of FeCl3?6H2O are Fe(OH)+2 and Fe(OH)3 during the pH range of 4 to 10. A selective flotation of spodumene and beryl from pegmatic ore had also been completed while using FeCl3?6H2O as activator and the blending collector. A bulk concentrate containing 1.087% BeO and 4.70% Li2O has also been obtained in the flotation of spodumene and beryl from pegmatic ore assaying 0.097% BeO and 0.45% Li2O, and the recoveries of BeO and Li2O in concentrate are 74.38% and 69.50% respectively.

Newmont Batu Hijau operates with an accelerated mining rate to optimize life of mine (LOM) project economics. This results in a portion of ore mined being stockpiled for reclaim and processing throughout, and at the end of mine life. LOM economics can be further enhanced by preserving stockpiled ore value by mitigating oxidation effects. A detailed stockpile ore oxidation study was conducted to: ?? Develop a practical understanding of how oxidation affects ore value; ?? Determine how oxidation rate can be controlled, and; ?? Determine how oxidation effects can be mitigated to preserve ore value. The result of the study is a stockpile management strategy that significantly reduces oxidation related losses and, implementation of that strategy within practical constraints. Implementation includes installation of Controlled Potential Sulfidisation (CPS) flotation to facilitate oxidised sulfide copper recovery and, recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage solution into saleable product. This paper describes the study results including managing and predicting stockpile oxidation with time, monitoring performance of implemented CPS flotation and recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage. These are essential elements of successful long term mine operation in Batu Hijau.
