In this paper, the application of the metallurgical residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts leaching process is studied in the area of wastewater treatment. The modification of the sulfuric acid leached residue and the adsorption behavior behaviour of heavy metal ions such as (Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Co(II), As(III)) in the waste-water on the surface of the residue are investigated. The rate of adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions in the wastewater on the modified sulfuric acid leached residue is investigated. It is showed that when the initial pH value of wastewater containing heavy metal ions including Pb(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and As(III) range from 1.4 to 1.9, with the use of the modified leached residue, As(III) ion can be selectively separated from wastewater, and the separation efficiency can reach 90%~100%. The adsorption efficiency is affected by pH, reaction time, amount of adsorbent and the initial concentration of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The results showed that the optimum pH was natural pH value and the absorption equilibrium time was 2 hours. The adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions increases with the addition of adsorbent and de- creases with the increase of the initial concentrations of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The heavy metal ions polluted wastewater, of which concentration is about 22.5~793.6 mg/L, can meet the national disposal standard for industrial wastewaters in China very well, after 2 hours treated by 3.75~7.50 g/L modified adsorbent at room temperature. Standard methods were used to investaged investigate the absorption behaviour between abosorbentabsorbent and metal ions in the wastewater. It is concluded that the adsorption behaviour of Co(II), Mn(II) and As(III) ion fits Freundlich iso-therm, while the adsorption behaviour of Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions fits Langmuir isotherm, and the saturated adsorption amount of the modified adsorbent is about 54.0~336.7mg metal/g?adsorbentabsorbent. It is suggested that the modified sulfuric acid leached residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts is environmentally attractive and meaningful as absorbent used in heavy metal ions polluted wastewater.

Ammonium-nitrate is a main component in blasting agents and dissolved ammonium residues may be discharged with mine water. The European Union aims to reach a good state of the water quality and recommends ammonium content below 0.5 mg/L for drinking water. Natural zeolites adsorb ammonium from water. In this work, the removal of low-concentration ammonium by commercial natural zeolites was studied in continuous tests. Natural zeolites made up between 83% and 95% of the mineral composition. The major zeolite minerals were chabazite and clinoptiolites and minor amounts of erionite and mordenite were as well present. The five natural zeolite samples, 500~710 µm, were conditioned to obtain zeolites in the Na-form. Ammonium adsorption onto natural zeolites depends mainly on the zeolite mineral type. The chabazite containing zeolite was superior over the four clinoptiolite samples for the removal of low concentrations of ammonium from water (pH of 7.5, flow 5 mL/min, room temperature). The adsorption capacity of chabazite was 48.3 mg NH4+/g zeolites, i.e. 73% of the theoretical exchange capacity 69 mg NH4+/g, during duration over 107 days and almost 6700 bed volumes exchanged. The four tested clinoptiolites had an ad-sorption capacity of 15.7mg to 25.0 mg NH4+/g zeolites. The natural zeolites were rapidly regenerated by an alkaline sodium chloride solution fed to the columns.

The objective of this work is to investigate the inadequacies of current CFD based methodologies of model development for predicting combustion behavior of pulverized coal in furnaces. In the present paper, a steady state CFD model was used for in-depth analysis of pulverized coal combustion. The model accounts for turbulence, coal combustion, convective and radiative heat transfer and motion of coal particles. It also uses coal combustion models to account for important processes such as devolatilization, combustion of char and the evolution of fuel nitrogen during coal combustion. The model predicts fluid flow, heat transfer, progress of combustion and pollutant formation (NOx, etc.). The model uses several parameters, which need to be tuned with experimental data, which is not only limited in quantity but also insufficient in detail. Various existing methodologies like part calibration method for tuning of the parameters are discussed. In the present work, the parameters associated with coal combustion models were tuned and validated with published data obtained from an experimental furnace using one such part calibration methodology. The results clearly show that the model predictions differed with the experimental data not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. These discrepancies were attributed to part calibration methodology. A detailed parametric study was carried out to demonstrate the importance of parameters from various classes, namely, combustion kinetics, heat transfer, process and geometry parameters, and CFD model parameters. This investigation clearly indicates that parameters from different classes have significant effect on combustion behavior. The discrepancies in current methodology are discussed and a need for comprehensive methodology is highlighted. The downstream treatment of chloride leach solutions of WPCB for recovery of base and precious metals by a combination of adsorption and precipitation processes were carried out. A synthetic leach solution (1 M HCl, 116.5 g/L Cl-, 30 g/L Cu2+, 2.5 g/L Fe3+, 5 mg/L Au3+, 10 mg/L Ag+ and 20 mg/L Pd2+), which was prepared based on the composition of the pregnant leach solution obtained in the previous study was used in the tests. The leach solution was initially subjected to activated carbon (AC) adsorption (20 g/L AC, 80°C) in which gold was selectively recovered over silver and palladium i.e., 88% Au recovery at 0.5 h (92% at 3.5 h) compared with only 3-6% for Ag/Pd. Copper and iron were also observed to adsorb on AC as indicated by 1.4% and 17% decline, in their respective concentrations. Following the adsorption and filtration stage, metallic copper was added into the gold-barren solution to allow reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+, and to cement Pd on metallic copper. Over the mixing period (1 h), 93% of the Pd was recovered while only 1.4% of silver was cemented onto metallic copper. Subsequently, the leach solution was gradually neutralised by NaOH to pH 4, 7.5 and 9.5 for the precipitation of copper as cuprite (Cu2O). It was found that 41% and 46% of Cu and Ag, respectively, were precipitated at pH 4 at which iron was almost totally (99.8%) removed from solution. Precipitation of copper and silver was increased further at high pHs. At pH 9.5, cumulative recoveries for copper and silver were 91% and 85%, respectively. XRD analysis of the precipitates confirmed the presence of cupric copper oxides/hydroxides and revealed that copper losses occurred at pH 4 was due to the undesired presence of cupric copper in the solution.

The effective removal of heavy metals from aqueous wastes is among the most important issues for many industrialized countries, How ever biosorption, i.e. the uptake of heavy metals by non- living biomass, has gained increased credibility during recent years. Biosorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution, on pretreated and immobilized Aspergillus niger was investigated in a batch and countinuous reactors. A.niger biomass pretreated by boiling in 0.5 N NaOH solution for 15 min, exhibited higher Cr(VI) removal capacity than autoclaved biomass. The optimum adsorption pH value observed for Cr(VI) ions was 2. The Cr(VI)removal rate increased with a decrease in pH. The influence of contact time, pH, Cr(VI) concentration, biomass concentration and temperature on Cr(VI) removal were also evaluated. Biosorption of Cr(VI) on pretreated biomass followed the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models.In this study A.niger biomass was immobilized in Na-alginate matrix. The biomass beads packed in a column were able to remove metal ions.In this study we used two different flow rate in a column, 1.5 mL/min and 3 mL/min.The breakthrough data obtained for Cr(VI) was adequately by the Thomas and Yan models and the adsorption capacity of the biomass was found to less than the adsorption capacity obtaind in the batch study. When the beads containing biomass become saturated with metal ions, the adsorbed metals were eluted using 0.5 N NaOH solution. Therefor nearly 90% of Cr(VI) was desorbed by NaOH solution.

Sodium oleate was an effective diaspore collector, whereas chelate collector OL2 showed certain collecting power over diaspore and nonionic surfactant OL3 showed little collecting ability. Then experiments were carried out using sodium oleate as the main collector with the addition of OL2,OL3 to study the influences on diaspore flotation, it could be seen from the experiments that accelerants had a marked influence on the recovery of diaspore, which could be raised by 10%, and the addition sequence also affected the flotation behavior: the best results could be gained when the accelerants were mixed thoroughly before adding and the best ratio of collector OL1 and accelerant OL2, OL3 stood at 30:2:1. Based on the calculation of the ingredients in the sodium oleate solution, sodium oleate reacted with surface of the mineral and formed the acid-soap polymer [HOl?Ol-] when pH was about 9. Zeta potential test showed the accelerant promoted the absorption of collector on the mineral surface, which lowered zeta potential. As could be seen from surface tension experi-ments, the addition of accelerant OL3 lowered the CMC value of OL1 solution, which was equiva-lent to raise the power of the agents. Further Infrared Ray experiments showed the co-absorption of OL1 and OL2 make aluminum oleate on the mineral surface more stable. Up till now, the mixed reagents with sodium oleate as the main collector, combined with other two accelerants had been used in the Zhongzhou concentration plant, which is the first diaspore flotation plant in China.

Gold and copper are lost in flotation tailings in mineral processing of copper-zinc-pyrite ores. Large resources of precious and base metals have accumulated in tailing ponds of Russian plants. Object of the study is the sample obtained from Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company in Russia. The main constituents in flotation tailings are Au, Ag, Cu and Zn with content 1.4 g/t, 12 g/t, 0.66 and 0.5% respectively. The flotation tailings are a refractory material. Gold, as main metal, is fine encapsulated in sulfides, mainly in pyrite. Gold extraction from tailings is 34.0 and 42.7% at P42 and P90 of 0.074mm particle size respectively. In this work heap bioleaching of tailings was studied for oxidation sulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite) with using mesofilic and moderately termofilic bacteria in acidic solutions. The tailings had low filtration property (< 0.3 m/day) and pelletization was used before bioleaching. Copper containing converter slags flotation tailings and calcium oxide were used as binding material for increasing filtration property of tailings. Copper was extracted in sulfate solution and was precipitated by cementation after cleaning of bacterial solution from iron. Copper recovery was 56.8% at content 61.4% in precipitate. The biooxidation of pyrite was 80%. Cyanidation, leaching with thiourea and heap leaching by cyanide were tested too. Gold extraction from solid bioresidues was 82, 75.3 and 77% respectively. The results of this investigation were recommended for pilot test.

The particle size distribution of ground minerals is of decisive importance for downstream processes like floatation, separation, drying or others. In order to optimize the process efficiency on one hand and the final product quality on the other hand an early control of the grinding or classification stage is essential. The ultrasound based particle size analyser OPUS is capable of performing on-line particle size distribution (PSD) and solid content measurement of mineral slurries such as iron ore, copper ore, fluorspar, or quartz sand and alumina directly in heavy and rough process environment. The instrument provides a PSD of 31 size classes and can be applied for particles from nanometer range up to several millimetres. Arbitrary interpolations in between the 31 measured points are available. Typical residue values show an excellent agreement to off-line particle size analysis methods such as e.g. sieve analyses or laser diffraction. OPUS is designed as rugged in-line probe made from stainless steel. The applied technique is independent of product flow dynamics, contamination, optical properties, vibrations, pressures or changes in solid concentrations. The instrument provides all data on the system?s PC or on the process control system by a variety of interfaces.

"A pilot test campaign was undertaken to evaluate dense medium cyclone separation efficiencies on samples of iron ore fines (-1mm +300µm). Evaluations were done using both gas and water atomised FeSi types across a range of operating conditions in the presence of slimes build-up. A Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) was used to measure size, density, shape and liberation data of DMS feed and products. The results of the test work were used to obtain parameters for modelling of the partition size/density response. The findings indicated that accurate density characterisation of the feed ore is essential in understanding product quality and recovery, particularly due to the effect of porosity and micro-inclusions. A significant off-set between cyclone underflow density and separation cut-point (D50) was found indicating that relatively low feed media densities (about 3.4g/cm3) are required to achieve high density cutpoints of over 4.0g/cm3. In agreement with CFD modelling, the separation quality is dominated by viscous effects, hence FeSi type and slimes content will need to be carefully controlled to ensure efficient separation.INTRODUCTION In the South African context, future resources of hematite are expected to be both of lower head grade and will contain a higher content of banded iron formation (BIF) (1). These ores may require finer crushing in order to liberate the high-grade fractions and will thus increase the amount of -1mm material to be processed. In order to efficiently upgrade these materials, it becomes necessary to re-examine both traditional and novel processes to treat material finer than 1mm in size. These include spiral and up-current classifiers, wet high intensity magnetic separation processes, Reflux classification and potentially includes dense medium separation (DMS). This study presents a technical evaluation of fines DMS using a mineralogically-based particle tracking analysis method (PTA) to calculate efficiencies of separation."

"The purpose of this research is providing a flotation process for recovery of lead in lead silver residues from a zinc smelting plant with a new hydroximic acid collector (HOC). The collecting ability and reaction mechanisms of HOC were investigated based on pure mineral flotation tests and analysis of zeta potential. The pure anglesite flotation tests showed that HOC has a good collecting ability for anglesite. Zeta potential measurements proved that HOC adsorbed on anglesite surface physically and chemically. The lead-silver residues in a zinc smelting plant with lead grade about 17.5% was used as raw material for flotation tests. The results showed that under the conditions of pH adjusting agent lime 500g/t, inhibitors sodium silicate 2000g/t, collector HOC 1500g/t, frother alcohol oil 75g/t, the grade of the lead concentrate can be reach 47.18% and the recovery was 76.39% by one roughing-one scavenging-three cleaning and middles back to the flow-sheet in turn after the lead-silver residues were washed by two stages of cleaning-filtration.INTRODUCTION Nowadays, with the increasing exploitation of natural mineral resources, more and more secondary resources should be researched and used for the valuable metals. Hydrometallurgical zinc leaching residues, which contain a considerable amount of zinc, lead, silver and other minor valuable constituents, is a typical and abundant secondary resources (Zhang et al., 2011). A huge quantity of zinc leaching residues (ZLR) had been produced per year (Jiang et al., 2017).This residues not only occupy precious land but also threaten the environment because of the dissolved heavy metals especially in rainy days (Han et al., 2014). Consequently, it is urgent to develop an effective and clean method to dispose this residues which can benefit not only in economical but also in environmental (Jha et al., 2001)."

"Pelletizing is an important technique in the ironmaking industry. Artificial and natural magnetites are materials that are widely utilized in the iron ore pelletizing process. In this work, the pelletizing characteristics of these two types of magnetite have been investigated in detail. The obtained results shown that in contrast to natural magnetite, the artificial magnetite concentrate exhibits stronger hydrophilicity, lower electronegativity, larger specific surface area, and rougher surface. In addition, the green pellets produced from the artificial magnetite concentrate are characterized by a higher compressive strength as compared to that of the pellets obtained from the natural magnetite concentrate. However, the shock temperature of the artificial magnetite pellets around 255 C is significantly lower than the threshold specified by the industry. The balling characteristics of the material obtained by mixing 20% of the artificial magnetite concentrate with 80% of the natural magnetite concentrate are considerably improved with respect to those of the individual components.INTRODUCTION Pelletization is an essential process of the ironmaking industry in China. Since the pellets produced from iron ore exhibit high mechanical strength, good particle granularity, and uniform shapes, pelletizing high-grade iron ores with good metallurgical reducibility can lower the coke ratio, improve their technico-economic index, and reduce the cost of processing pig iron in blast furnaces[1, 2]. Presently, high-grade magnetite is a material utilized for pelletizing various iron ores across the globe. However, its natural deposits have been depleting rapidly in recent years; as a result[3], China’s dependence on the foreign high-grade iron ores exceeded 70% in 2009 and reached the level of 87% in 2016. Hence, possible methods for the efficient cultivation of limonite, siderite, hematite, and other refractory minerals that correspond to low-grade, finely sized, inhomogeneous, and scattered iron ores have attracted significant attention [4, 5]. In particular, magnetization reduction roasting and magnetic separation techniques, which are widely utilized for obtaining high-grade artificial magnetite, represent effective ways of processing iron ores that can alleviate the scarcity of natural magnetite resources [6, 7]. The artificial magnetite produced by magnetization reduction roasting exhibits different characteristics as compared with those of natural magnetite (including the degree of hydrophilicity, surface potential, specific surface area, and other surface physicochemical properties[8-11], which significantly affect its pelletizing behavior. In this work, the surface characteristics of artificial and natural magnetites are investigated in detail, and their effect on their pelletizing properties (such as green ball strength, heat stability, and pelletization rate) are examined."

An attempt has been made to carry out qualitative assessment of mine water discharges from the different mines of West Bokaro Coalfields of Hazaribag district of Jharkhand, India. A total of 33 mine water samples were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), major cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K), major anions (HCO3, SO4, Cl, NO3), and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, As). The hydrochemical data has been evaluated in terms of major ion chemistry, solute acquisition processes and suitability of mine water for domestic, industrial and irrigation uses. The pH of the analyzed mine waters varies from 5.27?8.43 indicating acidic to alkaline nature of the water. The electrical conductivity (EC) values varied from 276 µScm-1 to 1598 µScm-1 for measured samples and spatial differences between the EC values reflects the wide variation in lithology, surface activities and hydrological regime prevailing in the region. The anion chemistry of the analyzed water samples shows the dominance of SO4 and HCO3 with a minor contribution from Cl, NO3 and F. The observed high values of sulphate in the mine water of the area may be attributed to the oxidative weathering of pyrites. On average chloride is contributing 5% of the total anionic balance (TZ-). Fluoride and nitrate have low concentrations and on average contributing <2% the total anions. The cation chemistry indicates that 79% of the samples are Ca>Mg>Na>K, while the 6% belong to Ca>Na>Mg>K and 1% of Ca>Mg>K>Na. Weathering of rock forming minerals and cation exchange processes normally control the levels of these cations. Concentrations of some heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr) are found to be well above the prescribed permissible levels recommended for the drinking water. The water quality assessment for drinking purposes indicates that most of the mine water having high TDS, total hardness (TH) and sulphate concentrations. This suggests that mine water of the study area is not suitable for direct use in drinking and domestic purposes and needs a proper treatment before its utilization. The assessment of water for irrigation uses show that the water is good to permissible quality and can be used for irrigation uses. However, high values of salinity, %Na, SAR, RSC and Mg-hazard at certain sites restrict its suitability for agriculture uses. Handling of municipal solid waste (MSW) and control of its potential resources is becoming increasingly important in modern society. The OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) average on municipal waste produced in 2003 was that of around 570 kg per inhabitant. In European Union countries around half amount is of MSW landfilled. In Finland still 88% of MSW was landfilled in 2004. Since incineration reduces MSW volume significantly while producing heat energy, it has become one of the most common waste handling techniques. The shortcoming of incineration is however, that incinerated MSW is often not pre-sorted and it produces slags and ashes as side streams from which recovery of metals is difficult. This paper looks into possibilities of scrap metal recovery for recycling from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. In order to do that, a flow sheet of physical separation methods was developed and tested with Finnish rotary furnace MSWI bottom ash. In addition, an empirical model for estimation of the recoveries of scrap metals with physical separation methods for treatment of MSWI bottom ash was developed. According to the results of this study, for 1 Mt of incinerated MSW with 30% mass reduction, a minimum resource potential of 100 kt for magnetic metal scrap of roughly 24 % grade and about 19 kt of non-magnetic metal scrap of roughly 65 % grade. In other words, 57 kg magnetic scrap and 12 kg non-magnetic scrap per inhabitant at the mentioned grades, respectively. Although wide variations of parameters affect the MSWI bottom ash quality, it can be said that a considerable amount of metals is drained into MSWI bottom ash. Results of this study show that from MSWI bottom ash significant material streams metal scrap can be reintroduced into the resource cycle which would otherwise be lost.

Taknar polymetal (Cu-Zn-Au-Ag-Pb) deposit and concentration flotation plant are located in the northeast of Iran. The flotation feed contains Chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite with 4, 4 and 8 percent respectively. Cu and Zn contents are 1.26 and 3.5 present. Pyrite decreases the quality of base metal concentrates and increases the amount of sulfur compounds produced in the base metal extraction processes. Therefore, depression of pyrite is essential in the concentration of base metal sulfides by flotation. For flotation tests, 4 mixed collector systems, MIBC (20g/t), lime and tow depression systems (sodium cyanide (60g/t)-zinc sulphate and dextrin (300g/t)-zinc sulphate) were used as collector, frother, pH regulator and pyrite-sphalerite depressants in the chalcopyrite flotation stage, respectively, and SIPX, MIBC, lime and copper sulphate (as activator) were used in sphalerite flotation from first stage tailings. The results have shown that, sodium cyanide is a suitable depressant for pyrite and sphalerite in the first stage of flotation. Compared to dextrin as depressant, chalcopyrite recovery was decreased approximately 1.83%. In addition, when sodium cyanide was used as pyrite depressant, copper sulphate consumption raised approximately 90 g/t for activation of sphalerite. From Environment and HSE points of view, dextrin is natural, biodegradable, and non-toxic while cyanide is very high toxic. In this study, a montmorillonite organo-intercalation compound (MOIC) was synthesized by using a Na-modified bentonite (NaB) as a matrix and hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) bromide as an intercalating reagent under microwave irradiation. The synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), organic carbon content measurement, and adsorption density determination. The results show that, at 10% suspension concentration and 10 minutes irradiation in a 130-W microwave oven, the basal spacing d(001) of the synthesized MOIC increases to 2.209 nm from the original 1.218 nm of NaB. The MOIC has much higher adsorptive densities to nitrobenzene and aniline from aqueous solution than the NaB. The adsorption isotherm of nitrobenzene on the MOIC is linear, and the adsorption is mainly the result of nitrobenzene?s preferred partition in MOIC over aqueous solution due to MOIC?s hydrophobicity. The adsorption isotherm of aniline on MOIC follows the Freundlich equation and the increased adsorption is not only the result of aniline?s preferred partition in MOIC over aqueous solution but also that of the MOIC?s surface adsorptions.

The preparation technological conditions and regeneration method of two novel granulated adsorbing materials of rectorite/fly ash composite (Material 1) and rectorite/water quenched - slag composite (Material 2) and the use of them to remove heavy metals from copper smelting plant wastewater have been studied. The experimental results showed that under the preparation conditions with the ratio of rectorite to fly ash or water - quenched slag of 1:1, the amount of the additive (Industrial Starch, IS) of 15% (Material 1) or 10% (Material 2), the addition of 50% water, and the calcination temperature of 500? (Material 1) or 400? (Material 2), the efficiency of heavy metal removal with the granulated materials was the best, whereas the ratio of disintegration loss was the lowest. Under the treatment conditions of natural pH, and with the addition of the granulated materials of 0.07g/cm3 (Material 1) or 0.05g/cm3 (Material 2), a reaction time of 60 minutes (Material 1) or 40 minutes (Material 2), and the adsorption temperature of 25?, the efficiency for the granulated materials to remove Cu2+Pb2+Zn2+Cd2+ and Ni2+ from the copper smelting plant wastewater was 98.9, 97.5, 96.7, 90.2, and 79.1, (Material 1) or 98.2, 96.3, 78.6, 86.2, and 64.2, (Material 2), respectively, and the quality indexes of the wastewater after treatment conformed with the first level of integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-1996). When the adsorption of heavy metal ions on the surface attained saturation the granulated materials could be regenerated by washing with 1 mol/L sodium chloride (NaCl) solution and still with quite good heavy metal removal efficiency. The granulated adsorbing materials had the advantages of high efficiency of wastewater treatment, easy method of solid-liquid separation and regeneration, and a broad prospect of applications.

The purification process of water-mining carnallite and rough potassium chloride concentrate from Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Group Co. Ltd. are investigated by the preprocessing-reverse flotation technology respectively. The results show that the impurities such as calcium sulfate and sodium chloride can be effectively removed from water-mining carnallite ore and rough potassium chloride concentrate by the new technology, the low-sodium carnallite is obtained and the final potassium chloride product greatly upgraded. The content and the recovery of KCl in the low-sodium carnallite are 25.78% and 97.50%, meanwhile the content of NaCl, CaSO4 in the low-sodium carnallite are 0.56% and 0.24%, and the removal of sodium chloride and calcium sulfate in the low-sodium carnallite are 97.48%, 85.10% respectively. The KCl content and recovery of high quality potassium chloride product are 98.25%, 96.70%, and CaSO4 content is 0.40% with 83.24% calcium sulfate removed in the high quality potassium chloride product.

"Magotteaux and Anglo Platinum started a co-operation program with the main aim of establishing the optimum milling configuration measured in terms of throughput, fineness and energy consumption.For this purpose, a fully instrumented pilot milling plant, supplied by Magotteaux (Pty) Ltd, and equipped with a 0.9 x 1.0 m ball mill, was erected at Frank concentrator (Merensky Pt ore). The primary ball mills at Frank concentrator were surveyed in order to set the conditions for the base case. This data was then replicated in the pilot mill under the same configuration. Thereafter, a series of different parameters were varied in order to attempt to optimize the milling system.Some of the grinding parameters that have been studied are:•,Gate versus overflow discharge•,Open versus closed circuit•,Different filling degrees•,Different shell liner profilesOnly grate versus overflow discharge and open versus closed circuit will be discussed in this paper.It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to give a universal solution as to what milling configuration is optimum in all cases. The conclusions apply for this particular case and probably most others, but it would be advisable to consider each case on its own."

The constant of flotation velocity is the value characterizing the kinetics of cyclic flotation. In the statistical theory of flotation its value is the function of probabilities of collision, adhesion and tearing off the grain from the air bubble. The grain ? air bubble collision plays a key role since there must be a prior collision before the grain ? air bubble adhesion happens. The probability of such an event to occur is proportional to the relation of the grain diameter to the bubble diameter. When the grain sizes are given, it is possible to control the value of collision probability by means of the size of air bubbles. Consequently, it is significant to find the effect of physical and physicochemical factors upon the diameter of air bubbles in the form of a mathematical dependence. In the pneumo-mechanical flotation machine the air bubbles are generated by the blades of the rotor. The dispergation rate is affected by, among others, the rotor rotational speed, the amount of air transported to the flotation chamber an time and the liquid surface tension, depending on the type and number of applied flotation reagents. In the proposed paper the authors will present the distribution of air bubble diameters on the grounds of the above factors, according to the laws of thermodynamics. The correctness of the de-rived dependences will be verified empirically.

This paper presents the preliminary results of a research programme conducted to assess the feasibility of a flotation technique in the remediation of soils severely affected by heavy metal contamination. The use of flotation in soil remediation is a recent practice. The main difficulties are given by the variety and peculiarity of the heavy metal containing species, and also by the grain size. Most of the studies reported in the literature concern the use of conventional collectors, such as xanthates, after a preliminary chemical modification of the metal bearing species through sulphidization. On the basis of the minera-petrographic characterization and of speciation, some classes of reagents have been selected, capable of acting both on metal-bearing species and all metallic cations to be separated. The design of the synthetic molecules has been based on the coordinative properties of the metallic centres and functionalized in order to act as collectors for a wide range of metals independently on their surrounding atoms. In laboratory experiments a sample of stream sediment has been utilized, whose contamination is caused by the runoff from Sardinia mine waste dumps and overflow from the settling ponds. The material showed contamination mainly from Zn, Pb and Cu and to a lesser extent from Cr, Ni, Cd, and Sb associated in mixed particles of Fe and Mn. Flotation tests on a laboratory scale have been performed on grain sizes less than 355 µm in laboratory cell Minerais & Metaux. The effects of the structure of collectors (functional group, chain configuration) as well as of the principal flotation parameters (such as pH, concentration of reagent) on the grade and recovery of heavy metals in the concentrate and in the tailings (remediated soil) have been investigated. The results of the laboratory tests substantially confirm the theoretical premises, and the most effecive reagents found belong to the classes ATP, MBT, MBO, fat acids and phosphates.
