The leaching kinetics of a zinc concentrate in autoclave reactors were studied. A sample of concentrate from Bolivia, with typical mineralogical characteristics of the Andes region, was used. A concentrate containing 49% zinc and 145 ppm of silver from Minera Viacha was characterized chemically and mineralogically (atomic absorption, X-ray diffraction, and SEM microscopy) and tested in bench scale reactors. Two types of autoclave batch reactors were used at 40 bars of oxygen pressure and three levels of temperature (150°C, 200°C and 250°C). The solid to solution leaching ratio was 1:10 (10% sulphuric acid concentration). The effect of the particle size of the concentrate on the leaching kinetics was studied (P80: 145 and 45 µm). Iron from the leaching solution was removed by precipitation by increasing the pH in order to generate a clean solution for zinc electrowinning. The zinc solution was used to evaluate the feasibility of cathode production at the laboratory scale. Zinc extractions with higher liberation (P80 = 45 µm) reached up to 98%. Ground concentrate with finer sizes resulted in agglomeration and the use of dispersing agents did not improve slurry mixing. The leaching solution contained 55 g/L zinc and 7 g/L iron; it was purified by precipitating iron. The precipitation was evaluated using sodium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide. In the first case, a colloidal suspension of ferric salts was formed while in the second case, different iron compounds were precipitated. The precipitate obtained with ammonium hydroxide had better filtering properties. Electrowinning was carried out using two types of cathodes (stainless steel and aluminium) and solutions purified with ammonium hydroxide. Zinc cathodes formed on stainless steel presented a better physical quality than those formed on aluminium.

"Selbaie is located northwest of Joutel, in what is known as the fourth east-west volcanic sediment group in northwestern Quebec. The main metals produced are copper and zinc, with important contents of both silver and gold. Production comes from an open pit mine on the A-I zone and from two underground mines on the B zone and the A-2 zone. Each mine gave rise to important capital investment programs for construction and mine development, all of which were managed and staffed with company-hired, non-union personnel. Production from all sources now exceeds 7000 tonnes per day, with a workforce of540 regular employees. Of particular interest technically is the high recovery of B zone reserves underneath 40 m of overburden cover, the low-cost capital development of the A-2 zone, the computerized control of open pit mining, and the successful copper-zinc separation of the A-1 zone ore. Due to the low grades of the mineral deposits, efficiency in all aspects of the production process, is essential to the success of the operation.LocationThe Selbaie Mine is located 82 km northwest of the locality of Joutel in northwestern Quebec (Fig. 1). Access to the mine is by an all-weather road, 32 km of which is paved. A second road access to the site is via La Sarre, 134km to the southwest. Employee access, materials transport and haulage of copper and zinc concentrates take place over both of these roads."

Over the last few years a multi-faceted feasibility study has been evaluating the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell powered equipment into underground mines to replaced diesel engine powered equipment. The analysis has shown that under normal operating conditions fuel cells could at the very least be an environmental and health benefit by eliminating combustion engines and their unwanted by-products. However, they could also generate significant reductions in the amount of ventilation a mine needs to supply when compared to dieselized operations; this would further decrease a mine?s energy consumption, its associated greenhouse gas impact and also reduce a mine?s significant ventilation associated costs. Fuel cell powered equipment also has the advantage of lower noise and heat production compared to their equivalent diesel powered counterpart. The degree to which fuel cells can generate ventilation benefits in underground mines depends upon a number of operational parameters and mine specific qualifiers such as current ventilation control or management, mine depth, inherent dust conditions and minimum velocity requirements. However another major consideration in the introduction of fuel cells in underground mines will be the safety requirements associated with diluting and removing the potentially explosive hydrogen in the event of a gas leak. In outside surface applications, it is possible to use dispersion, buoyancy, time, and lack of ignition sources as mitigating factors in deriving a low risk of an explosion. However, in underground operations these factors change, dispersion and buoyancy are limited; time may not be available and in non-coal mines ignition sources are not typically controlled. When a hydrogen leak occurs, the availability of sufficient ventilation to dilute and effectively remove the gas will be critical, consequently ventilation may be the prime risk controlling factor. In this paper, the authors evaluate the potential benefits of replacing diesel engines with fuel cells in powered production equipment, discuss the mitigating qualifiers that could limit ventilation savings and evaluate solutions to retain and maintain an additional ventilation capacity in the event of an emergency situation such as a hydrogen leak from the fuel cell stack or its distribution system.

Whereas many researchers and mine engineers have conducted tests using different types of grout, grout ratios, and physical modifications of the cable to determine cable bolt load characteristics, few studies have been conducted on cables fitted with internal instruments. Those studies that have been done have concentrated on cable behavior averaged over significant cable lengths. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Spokane, WA, are investigating the physical properties of cable bolts by replacing the conventional king wire with a modified king wire on which strain gauges have been installed . This paper documents test results on these modified cable bolts. Three tests were conducted at SRL on 1.83-m-long cables grouted into two 0.91-m-long pull-tube assemblies. Load along the cable was monitored with 20 strain gauges installed along the length of the cable. The instrumented cable bolt provided reproducible point measurements of cable load as opposed to load measurements averaged over significant cable lengths. Such point measurements can assist in interpreting the influence of cable confinement, grout quality, rock mass stiffness, and other factors. The instrumented cable bolt is a practical field and research tool because it can predict point loading along the cable and thereby allow interpolation of maximum possible loads on a cable.

"Current business and corporate environments push for improving metal accounting practices in smelters. The ensuing projects commonly proceed along a bottom-up approach. As such, efforts are first put on reviewing the measurement system and then on remedying the identified weaknesses. The focus is thus moved to mass/metal balance only after the measurements upgrade process has been completed. However, practice has shown that assessing the high variances related to suboptimal measurement processes is complicated without the help of statistical data reconciliation. This bottom-up approach leads to a to-do list that can not only exceed available resources but also lack prioritization in view of achieving the targeted end use. This paper describes an upgrade project done differently where all the three dimensions of the metal accounting system: hardware, software, and people were instead involved at the onset. Personnel was thus trained on data reconciliation software at the beginning of the project to make the reconciled mass balance benefits available earlier in the upgrading project. This has pinpointed the most critical measurements where accuracy and reproducibility should be improved. Overall, not only the instrumentation retrofitting process has been streamlined, but the global risk for the whole upgrading project has been significantly lowered.INTRODUCTION Mining companies are pressured to improve their production accounting practices in response to the strengthening of corporate requirements for timely and accurate production reporting (Gaylard, Randolph, & Wortley, 2014). Smelters are not spared from these changes. However, their unique situation in the mining value chain set them as strategic targets for upgrading projects. They usually have a longer lifespan than concentrators thereby offering an extended lifecycle to justify investments. Furthermore, numerous smelters have toll agreements with third parties. Accurate cost and production accounting is, therefore, a vital piece of information to fix acceptable contract conditions. Mining companies are ultimately aiming at a clearer view of the operating performance of each business unit to improve their business decisions in a competitive environment. This sought for increase in visibility through plant performance can only be achieved through an upgrade of the metal accounting system. Figure 1 shows the different components of a state of the art system (Gaylard, Morrison, Randolph, Wortley, & Beck, 2009)."

"Hydrocyclone separators are used in various industrial applications, including mining milling and tailings systems, in order to separate or classify solid particles and liquid droplets from multiphase systems. The flow within a hydrocyclone commonly used in the mineral processing industry was investigated numerically and experimentally using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. The computational simulations were performed using a commercially available CFD package, STAR CCM+. Two turbulence models were used in the numerical calculations: the k-? model and the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM). In both cases, the first order discretization scheme was unable to resolve the flow characteristics accurately due to the high levels of numerical dissipation. PIV measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Both the numerical simulations and PIV data demonstrate that tangential velocities tend to increase when going radially inward from the cyclone wall towards the vortex finder, and reach a maximum value before they begin to decline rapidly and eventually become zero at the wall. The results also demonstrate the utility of non-axisymmetric approaches in cyclone flow simulations for a greater understanding of the fluid mechanics. The computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow rate readings at the boundaries and locally by comparison to the PIV velocity vector maps and profiles. The comparisons demonstrated good agreement between the two models.IntroductionHydrocyclones are devices used to separate and classify solid particles or liquid droplets from liquid-solid or liquid-liquid systems. "This paper expands the SAG mill survey database published by the Author at Procemin 2013. The new database includes 49 published SAG/AG mill surveys and includes mills from all over the world. The paper will compare the survey database to SAG mill models by Austin, Morrell and Hogg & Fuerstenau with the purpose of demonstrating the degree of fit of the models to surveys and validating any empirical “fitting factors” used in the models.SAG mill power draw models are used in mill design and grinding circuit modelling to predict how much power will be consumed by a particular mill geometry and operating configuration. The importance of conducting surveys suited to model calibration will be highlighted because the review of literature shows that survey information important to modelling is often missing or omitted. A recommendation for the collection of data during a mill survey is presented, along with some assumptions used by the Author in the absence of certain data. The benefit to mining companies of publishing their survey data, and thereby allowing modellers to improve their model calibration, is discussed.The comparison of models requires a discussion of the measurement of power in a mill drive system as the models use slightly different position in the electrical network for ""where power is measured"". The benchmarking of models against plant operations requires a similar discussion of power measurement."

INTRODUCTION WHILE TITANIUM, the element, has been known for over 150 years, titanium, the metal, is a relative newcomer to the metallurgical and industrial scene. The reasons for this chiefly lie in the refract1Hy nature of titanium compounds; the high melting point of the metal; the great activity of elemental titanium, particularly at temperatures close to .and above the melting point; and the pronounced deleterious influence of certain impurities on its mechanical proper-ties. Early efforts at production of the metal were, consequently, either unsuccessful or resulted in products having sub-metallic properties. With the considerable improvement in equipment, materials, and skills that have developed within the past twenty-five years, later investigators have had a better opportunity to overcome some of the inherent practical obstacles and to come to grips with the essential technical problems. NATURAL ABUNDANCE OF TITANIUM Titanium is one of the most abundant metallic elements. It has been estimated (1) that titanium comp-rises about 0.65 per cent of the earth's crust, and therefore ranks fourth among the structurally useful metals in the order: aluminum, iron, magnesium, titanium. It must be appreciated that the relative abundance of the element is only a crude indication of its potential availability, since a very substantial proportion is present as a minor constituent in practically all igneous rocks. By comparison, present-day ores of titanium are relatively few and are but a minor fraction of the estimated total titanium contained in the earth' s crust.

"The Xstrata Nickel Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik region has been in operation since 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,200,000 tonnes per year due to an Optimization Project (FAG to SAG conversion) in 2005 and many recent processimprovements.In 2006, the Raglan Metallurgical Group with assistance from the Xstrata Process Support group decided to make SAG control one of its priorities in order to further increase throughput and improve stability. The original primary mill control logic delivered by the Optimisation Project in 2005 consisted of a simple PID loop controlling the mill charge (bearing pressure) through feed rate changes. Due to the multivariable, non-linear and disturbance dominated nature of the SAG circuit it was quickly found that this traditional PID control strategy was not able to adequately control the mill; resulting in poor stability, frequent operator interventions and less than optimum performance.This paper describes the successful integration of advanced field systems such as mill feed image analysis (Wipfrag) and crusher gap controller (ASRi), into a multi-variable fuzzy logic SAG mill controller. The process of how a strategy for control was developed and implemented directly in the existing control system (exploiting standard system capabilities) is discussed. It is also shown how this approach has provided mill automation which is simple, robust (despite erratic feed characteristics), and delivers both an increase in throughput and a reduction of variability.INTRODUCTIONOriginally commissioned as a Fully Autogenous Grinding (FAG) circuit in 1997, preparations to convert the Katinniq Concentrator Mill to SAG had in fact commenced as early as 1999, but were halted owing to alternative process improvements which achieved up to 1Mtpa as early as 2000. "FOLLOWING the Leduc discovery •by Imperial Oil in 1947, The California Standard Company began to acquire land in the area immediately west of Edmonton and in line with the Leduc reef trend (Figure 1).The California Standard Winter-burn Province No. 1 in Lsd. 10, Section 4, Township 53, Range 25, West 4th, which was spudded, on the basis of a seismic anomaly, in December, 1949, failed to find reef. This well was located on the eastern .edge of a large land block which California Standard and Imperial Oil had pooled as a joint venture, with California Standard a:s the operator (Figure 2).The culmination •of an extensive exploration and land aquisition programme was the drilling of the California Standard-Acheson Province No. 1 well .in Lsd. 13, Section 2, Township 53, Range 26, West 4th. On August 24th, 1950, a drill stem test was run in the D-3 zone which had been encountered at 4,969 feet, and a flow rate of 702 barrels per day •of 36° gravity oil was obtained. Just previously, Imperial Oil had completed a similar programme in the Stony Plain Reserve with the swabbing-in of Imperial Stony Plain No. 1. These two discoveries set off a drilling programme to determine the extent and value of the oil accumulation.Subsequent drilling of wells some successful .and others not by several other companies as well as California Standard bias, .to date, still left much to be determined as to the approximate delineation of the productive limits of the Ache-son-Stony Plain area. However, to August 31st, 1951, there were twenty-one D-3 producers north of the reserve and three in the Stony Plain Reserve."

The geochemical interpretation of results of statistical analysis of published multi-element stream sediment data from southwest and northern New Brunswick is presented. Element concentrations in southwest New Brunswick are low and comparable to element concentrations in background areas in northern New Brunswick. Deposits of copper and nickel are indicated in southwest New Brunswick. Anomalous element concentrations occur in several areas in northern New Brunswick and the elements most commonly associated with these anomalies are Cu, Pb, Zn, As and Ag; and also Mo, Wand Sb. Bedrock geology greatly influences element concentrations and may cause false anomalies. Manganese has a pronounced effect on the dispersion patterns of Co and also Zn, Mo, Pb, As, Ba and Ni. Nickel and Cr are strongly sympathetically related and this association is independent of bedrock type.

The fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) mining model has significant implications for the industry as it plays an important role in fulfilling the economic, social and workforce needs of the contemporary mining industry. It has increasingly been adopted in countries such as Canada and Australia, but is the current nature of the FIFO model challenging the place women have achieved in the mining workforce? Research in the mining and oil and gas industries reveals that major sources of stress for fly-in-fly-out mining workers are the times of parting and of reunion, the challenges in defining roles within the family, parenting, and conflict between spouses over the use of the leave time and money. So how are women in the industry coping with the FIFO schedules and consequent intermittent relationship with families and partners? How is the mining industry adapting to recruit and maintain female employees in FIFO operations? This paper describes an exploratory study conducted in Canada, which intended to provide some initial insights that might help us answer the questions above. There are several inferences made from this exploratory study. It is clear that FIFO poses significant challenges for both female and male workers. It is largely seen as rigid, extremely challenging for employees with young families and workers who are single mothers, and it is generally incompatible with starting a family and caring for small children. FIFO creates severe stress on relationships and on workers psychological well-being. It seems to be indeed harder for women, since they are often in lower paying positions and therefore have less financial reward for the FIFO lifestyle. On the other hand, FIFO creates the opportunity for young women, including Aboriginal women, to jump-start their careers, as well as opportunities for mature women to work while pursuing other personal interests during their time off. This paper concludes with recommendations to improve the FIFO system in order to increase the ability of mining companies to hire and retain women

"BHP-Billiton’s Cannington mine in Northwest Queensland produces a silver-rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. The plant has the capacity to treat 3.1 mta and for the year to June 2006 mean feed grade was 10.3% Pb, 461 g/t Ag and 3.7% Zn. Recovery losses of lead and silver are primarily in the fine fractions. In 2001, the plant was modified when it was determined that splitting the lead feed into two size fractions, and floating the two fractions separately increased fine lead and silver recovery. The fine lead fraction (called the split float) is 80% <16µm and about a quarter of the lead and silver is in the finest fractions. In 2006 to further improve lead and silver recovery a statistical plant trial of magnetic aggregation conditioning of the split float feed was undertaken. While pure galena is diamagnetic the Cannington galena contains iron within the galena mineral resulting in the galena having a paramagnetic, magnetic susceptibility. The trial demonstrated to greater than 98% statistical significance an increase in lead recovery, and to 99% statistical significance an increase in silver recovery, and to greater than 97% significance an increase in the lead in concentrate in the split float circuit. These economic recovery benefits with magnetic aggregation of the split float feed, has led to the incorporation of this technology in the plant.INTRODUCTIONThe BHP-Billiton owned Cannington silver, lead and zinc mine is located in the Australian state of Queensland about 800 kilometres west of the coastal city of Townsville. This is a pastoral area characterised by large cattle farms, low population density and very little infrastructure. The area has two seasons, a wet, hot summer and a dry, mild winter. Because of its isolation and lack of infrastructure the mine has always operated on a fly in fly out basis.Geological drilling defined the resource as 43.8 million tonnes grading 11.6% lead, 4.4% zinc and 538 ppm silver (Walters and Bailey, 1998). At times during its history Cannington has held the crown as the single largest lead and silver mine in the world (Torrisi and Smith 2003). Another unique characteristic of the operation’s history is the rapid progress from discovery to operation. The first drill to intersect the ore body was in 1990 and the mine and plant was commissioned in 1997."

In fracture mechanics modeling the rock mass is seen as the combination of rock material and fractures, which are evident on different scales. The activation and propagation of fractures dominates the stability and performance issues as well as fluid flow potential. Once fractures have started to grow into each other and create through going separations, stability of rock engineering constructions may be violated. Further, as fracture mechanics inherently incorporated a scaling law in the form of the participating fracture length, scaling issues can be more accurately mirrored. This contribution highlights some examples of application of a fracture mechanics based code on some rock mechanics issues such as numerical laboratory experiments, borehole stability or the creation of fluid pathways due to underground constructions. The results show explicitly the creation of fractures and connection of existing ones, and hence the safety and performance issues. It has to be concluded that the basis for frequent application of fracture mechanics on specialized challenges in Geomechanics is laid, and the needs for future developments are defined.

"This paper is intended as a review of the progress that has been made in the Province of Ontario in the field of acid drainage waste treatment technology.Three years ago, at the Third Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors, we presented a paper entitled ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in Ontario"". At that time I was working for the Ontario Water Resources Commission. The paper turned out to be the very beginning of the Commission's acid mine drainage control program. In the intervening three years, the Ontario Water Resources Commission has been amalgamated with other government groups and has evolved into the present Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Today the Ministry is involved in running one of the most advanced acid mine waste control programs in the world.As a part of its mining program, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment has published three major reports which deal directly and specifically with the industrial waste disposal problems that may arise at a mining operation. In order of publication, these reports are as follows:(1) ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in the Province of Ontario"".This 338-page report covers all aspects of the problem of acid mine drainage and includes detailed sections on acid flow detection, acid flow chemistry and acid flow treatment.(2) ""The Use, Characteristics and Toxicity of Mine-Mill Reagents in the Province of Ontario"".This report, 244 pages in length, gives the chemistry and toxicity of nearly all of the chemicals that find common use in the Canadian mining industry. Most of the toxicity figures quoted are the result of a comprehensive bioassay program that was initiated by the Ministry."

Hydraulic shovels are widely used for primary production in surface mining operations. Variability in material diggability, unstructured mining environments and limited space and operator inefficiency affect the performance of these shovel excavators. Dynamic models of the hydraulic shovels are essential for understanding and improving machine performance. This paper contributes to this subject area by advancing hydraulic shovel kinematics and dynamics using the modified Newton-Euler method. A virtual simulator is developed to simulate the hydraulic shovel performance in the ADAMS environment. The simulator is validated with data on shovel geometry and the physical and mechanical properties of a formation in a surface mining environment. The results indicate that a shorter digging time increases the shovel operating power requirements, and that the required peak power increases by 100% when the digging time reduces by 50%. Simulation results also show that a shallow trajectory facilitates the digging process, with 50% reduction in peak power requirements compared to a deep one. This simulator provides a powerful tool for performance monitoring, excavation process designs and structural optimization of hydraulic excavators. This work also forms the basis for developing comprehensive simulator models for automated shovel operations in constrained mining environments.

The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern Québec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed ultrafine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultrafine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulphides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 microns and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3% S, 0.07% Cu and traces of antimony (0.03%). The mineralogical characterization showed the presence of 65% gangue minerals, 23% pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6% arsenopyrite, 2.2% pyrite and 0.08% chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05%) and sphalerite (0.03%). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3-5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20 C 72 hours extracted 97.0% Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7% Au extraction. A 16-h pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-h cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5%. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0%. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2%. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80%. Efficient cyanidation of an ultrafine sulphide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultrafine sulphide concentrates.

"BioteQ has successfully developed commercial operations for ARD treatment and selective metal recovery using the patented BioSulphide and Thiopaq® biological reduction technologies. The BioSulphide-Thiopaq process was developed to provide biogenic sulphide for the selective recovery of high purity metal concentrates from acidic wastewater, which are sold to recover capital costs and off-set water treatment costs. The BioSulphide-Thiopaq process can be used on a stand-alone basis or in conjunction with a lime circuit. Process advantages include: selective recovery of metals, very low metal concentrations in effluent, reduced waste sludge liability, reduced lime treatment costs and, in some cases, profitable sale of metal concentrates. Two case studies are presented to illustrate operations focused on metal recovery at the Caribou Mine, New Brunswick, Canada, and at Phelps Dodge, Arizona. A third case study is presented to highlight environmental control as well as metal recovery for treatment of ARD at the Raglan Mine in Northern Quebec. Process flowsheets, capital and operating costs are presented for the three case studies.INTRODUCTIONProtection of water quality has become one of the most important environmental challenges facing the mining industry. Although new mining projects can be designed to minimize impacts to the environment, many existing and abandoned mining operations have water quality problems. The principal cause of water contamination is acid rock drainage (ARD), which is generated when residual sulphide minerals in waste rock, tailings and other mine components and products are exposed to air and water. These reactions can produce acidity and elevated concentrations of metals in drainage and seepage that can adversely affect surface and groundwater resources. To meet regulatory criteria for water quality in the receiving environment, many mine operators must consider treatment of mine water and other effluents prior to discharge."
