"The State of the EnvironmentRecent data from a State of the Environment report prepared in January 1991 and released in April (see references) , indicates that the physical and biological environment across Canada is deteriorating in some important ways. For example: • emissions and atmospheric levels of CO2 are rising at a rate more than 50% of the U.S. increase; global temperature continues to rise, especially during the last decade;• while S02 emissions have been falling since 1984, NOz has declined only slightly since that time; N02 in Canada rose 43% during 1970-87, compared with a 7% rise in the U.S.;• municipal discharges of phosphorus and BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) to fresh water have been rising steadily since 1983);• pulp and paper mill discharges to fresh and Pacific coastal waters have been rising, 1970-87;• migratory game bird populations (Prairie Mallard, Northern Pintail) have been declining for the last 20 years;• total per capita energy use continues to climb.The State of the PublicSimilarly, data from recent public opinion surveys shows that public concerns about the environment are either rising, or are remaining at a high level despite the competing claims of the economy and political events for attention.For example, Professor Reginald Bibby's national survey this year shows that Canadians rank our top three issues as theeconomy, the environment and government incompetence.An Angus Reid survey commissioned by the Mining Association of Canada and other mining organizations in 1989 showsthat, despite general support for its economic benefits:• 67% of the general public perceive the mining industry to be a major source of pollution and environmental contamination;• 68% believe that a new mine should not be developed if it will disturb local wildlife;• 52% would prohibit a new mine if it required a road through a national park;• 49% would disallow mine development if it took as much land as an average farm in an agricultural area or if it limited sports fishing in a local lake."

"The Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located at 4200 m elevation in the Chilean Andes. The deposit is a world-class supergene enriched porphyry with a mining reserve of 89 Mt of 1.3% copper. The supergene zone will produce 6.3 Mt of ore per year for more than 15 years to produce 75 000 t of cathode copper per year.This paper will review the project geology the computer model ling of the deposit, the mine planning process and the property production scheduling. With copper production .fixed by the onsite electrowinning capacity, the planning and scheduling aspects to optimize the project NPV will be discussed. Some of the logistics, equipment. personnel and process difficulties of operating a mine at 42()() m elevation will also be described. IntroductionProject DescriptionThe Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located in the northern part of the Chilean Andes. The project is based on the supergene enriched portion of a porphyry deposit which has a mining reserve of 89 million tonnes at 1.3070 copper. Below the enrichment blanket, the protore represents a further resource.All ore will be leached, the higher grade material will be crushed and stacked for thin layer heap leaching, and the lower grade and oxide material will be dump leached as run-of-mine material. Solvent extraction and electrowinning will be used to produce 75 000 tonnes of cathode copper per year. Power will be supplied by a 40 MW on-site diesel generating plant with the waste heat being used for process heating. The leaching operation will operate in excess of 15 years and may be followed by open pit mining and conventional ore concentration of the underlying primary sulphide mineralization.Because of the dry location water will be piped 37 km from a ground water source at the Salar de Michincha. Water requirements will be approximately 1.5 million m3/year. The operation will eventually employ approximately 550 people on a 7-day-on, 7-day-off rotation with two twelve-hour shifts per day with an on-site camp. Busing will be provided to the port city of Iquique."

"INTRODUCTIONTetronics Research and Development Co. Limited has installed several plasma torches for steel heating in continuous caster tundishes. An extensive demonstration program on a 14 tonne tundish reported the following advantages of plasma heating.• close control of steel temperature to ± 5°C;• a reduction of the furnace tapping temperature of up to 20ºC, leading to savings in energy and refractories costs ;• improvement in steel quality, to produce a slab product with an equi-axed crystal structure and a reduced number of large sub-surface slag inclusions;• the virtual elimination of oxygen pickup in the tundish; and• the capability of making ferroalloy trim additions to the tundish to permit a change of steel grade during casting, greatly decreasing inventory costs.The Need for Tundish HeatingIn the continuous casting of steel, the function of the tundish is to transfer the molten metal between the ladle to one or more continuously fed casting moulds. Figure I shows a typical temperature profile of molten steel in the tundish over the first cast cycle. It is observed that a rapid drop in temperature occurs both at the start of the cast, due to the tundish refractories absorbing heat, and also during ladle changeover. In addition, as a result of thermal losses through the ladle sidewalls, there is a gradual decline in the bulk steel temperature over the entire heat cycle. Consequently, in normal tundish operation, it is necessary to cast with a high superheat (25°C to 30°C + above steel liquidus temperature) in order to prevent freeze-up of the strand. Problems of high temperature variation and the potential of the steel solidifying in the tundish are greater for small caster units of low thermal mass . A high steel superheat increases the steelmaking vessel process time and refractory wear and prevents the formation of a uniform equi-axed solidification structure in the cast steel, resulting in centre line segregation and porosity. The large drop in the casting temperature that occurs during unsteady state operation causes an increase in the number of sub-surface inclusions, reducing the value of the product. Accordingly, plasma heating may be employed to maintain the molten steel at an optimum temperature to produce a slab of consistent quality."

In 1987, John Schloen published a survey and analysis of copper electrorefining tank room data. Following this paper, a series of copper electrorefining surveys have been conducted and presented at each of the Copper-Cobre meetings over the past 20+ years (1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013). For each of these surveys, William Davenport has been key driving force in the collection and analysis of data. To honour Professor Davenport’s contribution to copper processing, a review of the data was conducted. Historic trends and possible future technologies are discussed.

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. "Sensor based sorting faces two main challenges related to limited capacity/throughput and the ability of sensors to accurately discriminate based on estimated grades. This paper is aimed at improving sensor discrimination. Sensors have the ability to measure more than a single response. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) can detect and provide concentration information about a range of elements. Similarly, electromagnetic sensors (EMs) can generate magnetic susceptibility and conductivity responses over a range of frequency levels. The sensors thereby provide a response signature rather than a simply a single response that is a proxy for a metal grade. Furthermore, integrating sensor responses can improve the discrimination of metal bearing rock from waste. A study was conducted on a gold ore to assess sortability using XRF and EM sensors. A multi-variable regression approach was used to develop models that included a range of responses. Correlations improved significantly when compared to single response correlations. The approach showed that both positive and negative correlations contributed to the improved correlations. Stepwise regression simplified the models and showed that 2nd order interaction effects can be important. The approach also showed that combining different responses can improve discrimination accuracy. An important outcome of the study was that an ore that had been consider not to be sortable was determined to be sortable through the application of an approach that used the sensor responses in a more intelligent manner.INTRODUCTIONMining is aimed at recovering valuable minerals from their host rocks. Many methods are used to recover valuable minerals, and finding efficient and cost-effective ways is the key in research and production. . Ore sorting technology is fitting this definition. It not only discards waste rocks away from the concentrator but also recovers metal bearing ore particles that could be lost to the waste dump. The benefits of ore sorting include increased energy efficiency and reduced water and reagent usage in the downstream operations (Bamber, 2008; Gunson, Klein, Veiga, & Dunbar, 2012; Mazhary & Klein, 2015; Robben, Wotruba, Robben, von Ketelhodt, & Kowalzcyk, 2013)."

"This paper presents a study developed to assess the potential use of salt tailings as backfill to control surface subsidence and as a mine bulkhead used to isolate areas of potential brine inflows. A series of index tests, centrifuge model tests and quasi-static creep consolidation tests were performed to evaluate the creep and consolidation properties of salt backfl1l and to evaluate the effect of brine inflow and brine infiltration on backfill behaviour. The centrifuge models were specifically designed to study the mechanical behaviour of salt backfill under the influence of brine inflow and long-term creep. Test results indicated that salt tailings could be applied underground as a bulkhead to seal off areas of potential inflow with the additional advantage of controlling room closure and local back instability. It is hoped that this study will assist mine planners to develop contingency plans to control brine inflow occurrences. IntroductionThe use of salt tailings as backfill is a technique that would assist in the control of potential brine inflows and surface subsidence, and would have a very positive impact on the long term adverse environmental effects associated with surface salt tailings disposal. A centrifuge testing program was designed to evaluate the behaviour of salt tailings as backfill; the effectiveness of salt backfill as a bulkhead used to isolate areas of potential brine inflow and the potential use of salt backfill to control surface subsidence. The testing program was also used to evaluate the creep-consolidation properties of salt backfill and to evaluate the effect of brine inflow and brine infiltration on backfill behaviour. This paper presents the results of the experimental centrifuge testing program and a comparison of results with models tested under I g using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled loading frame (MTS) and a creep consolidation cell. Applicability of the results to practical underground soft rock mining is also discussed.The centrifuge model tests indicated that salt tailings could be applied underground as bulkheads to seal off areas of potential inflow with the additional advantage of controlling room closure and local back instability. Because the applied stresses (1.2 MPa) and fill consolidation were relatively low, the centrifuge simulated bulkhead did not retain all of the inflow brine. At typical field stresses it is expected that the fill would be able to seal off panels with brine inflows. Further testing at higher stresses are suggested to determine the consolidation and stress levels at which the fill would completely retain any potential brine inflow head and positively act as mine bulkhead."

There has been increasing interest in the use of robotic machines, and several prototype robotic machines have been developed to automate the grit-blasting process for the purpose of steel bridge maintenance. To utilize such a robotic grit-blast machine effectively, the first consideration is automating the determination of the rust surface area to blast, on the basis of standards of practice, in a rapid manner. This study aims to propose a method to rapidly and accurately determine the rust surface area on steel bridges to blast, with consideration for the standards of practice, from images acquired via a blasting machine. The first step is to perform a color space conversion to transform the input image from a red/green/blue (RGB) color space to a hue/saturation/intensity (HSI) color space. The next step is to detect the presence of rust, using pixel-level classification via the C4.5 decision tree algorithm. Then it is necessary to confirm the blasting area by verifying whether the rust detection result satisfies the specified criteria on the basis of standards of practice. The proposed method was validated on 39 test images with various characteristics with respect to the degree of rusting and rust distribution type. The experimental results showed that the average accuracy rate of rust area classification was about 97.63%, and the success rate of the final decision of blasting area determination was 100.00% for 39 test examples. The whole processing time took an average of only 0.86 seconds per image. The preliminary results demonstrated that the proposed method not only determined whether rust was present in an image and the amount of rust but also indicated whether blasting was necessary, and, if necessary, it rapidly specified the rust surface area that should be blasted on the basis of standards of practice. The proposed method could be successfully incorporated into a robotic grit-blast machine.

Recovery and recrystallization of Au wire can degrade strength and alter conductivity properties during exposure to elevated temperature. Au Deformation Processed Metal Metal Composites (Au DMMC's) are being developed for electronic applications requiring high conductivity and high strength. This paper discusses the relationships between microstructure, strength, and resistivity of Au DMMC's. It also presents the results of a recent study on the elevated temperature stability of Au DMMC's of several compositions. Au-7 vol %Ag, Au-14 vol %Ag, and Au-vol 7%Pt DMMC samples were prepared by a powder metallurgy technique. All specimens were processed into wire by extrusion, swaging, and drawing. The smallest final diameter of these wires was 120 ?m. Thermal stability was analyzed by electrical resistivity measurements to determine the relation between transformation rates and time at elevated temperature. The extensive deformation used to produce these composites reshaped the initially equi-axed powder into filaments that are 30 to 100 nm in diameter and 16 to 180 mm in length. The small filament diameter confers high strength on the composite. The high conductivity can be explained by electrons flowing parallel to the filamentary microstructure aligned with the wire axis. Using the Avrami and Arrhenius equation relationships, it is possible to predict the times and temperatures needed to achieve various degrees of homogenization. The Au DMMC's were found to have good thermal stability compared to conventional coldworked Au interconnection wires. Although these composites will revert to solid solutions if exposed to high temperatures for prolonged time periods, their relative stability is sufficient to allow them to maintain their twophase microstructure during the anticipated lifetime temperature profiles of many products.

"Substituting Portland cement with slag cement is one of the most economically attractive uses of slags. For this application, high cooling rates are required to form an amorphous structure. However, this is counteracted by the need to use small coolant flowrate to allow recovery of slag thermal energy as high quality heat to the coolant fluid. Therefore, a relationship between cooling rate of slag and its structure is essential to recover the heat effectively while making an amorphous slag.A modified Single Hot Thermocouple Technique (SHTT) was employed to investigate the crystallization behavior of slags by plotting their TTT (Time-Temperature, Transformation) diagrams. Seven different slag compositions containing CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, MgO were prepared at varying basicity (CaO/SiO2 =0.5-1.4).The results indicate that with increasing basicity, the TTT curves of glassy to crystalline transformation shift to the left which means higher crystallization tendency. This agrees with the fact that with the increase of basicity, the Si-O bonds are weakened, which in turn facilitates the re-ordering and crystallization of the silicate structure."

"This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum’s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill – a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was “proof of concept” and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years.Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity – this paper describes the projects’ roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs."

"Shore Gold Inc. (Shore) is presently designing a diamond processing plant for the Star and the Orion South kimberlite deposits in the Fort à la Corne (FalC) area in central Saskatchewan. The first step in the plant is diamond liberation and occurs in the comminution section. Diamond liberation is the process of breaking up the kimberlite rock, as gently as possible so as not to damage the diamonds.Autogenous grinding mills (AG mills) use a combination of impact crushing, abrasion and attrition to break up the kimberlite. The forces that occur during the actions of abrasion and attrition cause the kimberlites to break up preferentially along lines of weaknesses which offers a “diamond friendly” method of comminution.Hard competent kimberlite is commonly found in the diatreme zone as well as the root zone of the volcanic pipe and is the source of kimberlite for most of the Southern African diamond mines. Softer kimberlite is typically found in and around the crater area of a volcanic pipe and it is this kimberlite that makes up the majority of kimberlite for both the Star and Orion South deposits. These softer kimberlites can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition imparted by AG mills. In order for Shore to benefit from the softer kimberlite found in the Star - Orion South diamond project, two large (10.97 m diameter x 7.10 m long) AG mills were designed for the comminution section based on extensive test work and simulations by Metso Minerals (Metso)."

This article summarizes some of the principal features of the taxation of industrial mineral mining in Canada. Where the rules applicable to such operations differ from those pertaining to the production and processing of precious and base meta s (non-industrial minerals), the two sets of rules are compared. If a conclusion could be drawn from such an over-all comparison, it may be that the total tax burden on an industrial mineral mine can be considerably more onerous than on both base meta mining operations and manufacturing profits.

"The objectives of the Wabush Mines tailings stabilization program are to control dust Ii/t-off and to rehabilitate the disposal area. The evolution of the program started with test plots in 1970, these being continued and expanded upon through 1974. In 1976, a 35-acre vegetation field trial was attempted and failed, part of the failure being attributed to lack of adequate equipment. Subsequently, equipment was purchased and during the summer of 1979-80 extensive areas were treated. The program was also expanded to include the evaluation of chemical and water spray stabilization versus vegetation in areas where shorter-term control is required. In addition, during the summers of 1979-80, spruce bog material was spread over about 100 acres and seeded.The approach to reclamation by vegetation at Wabush is one of soil building. Work to this point indicates that iron ore tailings can be converted to a soil capable of supporting plants. Plans for the Wabush tailings disposal area should make dust lift-off from inactive tailings areas negligible within the next few years."

"In order to obtain reproducible and reproducible results in batch flotation, researchers have tried various approaches, from normalized testing, to modifying existing cells, and even designing new machines. The paper reviews the basic concepts that must be fulfilled in a laboratory flotation machine, and present the FLOTOMATEC design, which results from five years of testing and development. In addition to providing accurate measurements of air flowrate, power consumption, agitation speed, the cell eliminates most operator induced errors. Results of experiments comparing FLOTOMATEC to a conventional cell, as well as reproducibility tests are given. Introduction The use of batch flotation machines in mineral processing research and development is very common. These machines have been used for many years without almost any change in their design, instrumentation or automation. Various authors since Raffinot (1960) have criticized the available designs, especially with respect to the large errors that are introduced by the manual mode of operation. Barbery et al.
