"Any study in the field of theoretical investment analysis, or practical project evaluation, must be based on the assumption of one of the commonly applied models of time and value representation, and the corresponding interest convention. The lack of clear assumptions in this regard may easily confuse both the author of the study and the reader, and sometimes even lead to inaccurate results.In the first part of this paper formal definitions of the continuous and discrete models of time and value representation are introduced; in the second part, the importance of transparent assumptions is shown using a concrete example of inflation calculation in project evaluation.IntroductionIn his recent paper, L.D. Smith(10) discusses an important aspect of mine investment analysis: inflation in project evaluation. His interesting presentation of current practices of handling inflation by Canadian and international mining companies in their feasibility studies ends, in the conclusions, with a call for clear assumptions made when evaluating mining projects.With this call, an important issue has been addressed. The lack of clearly stated assumptions, or their incompleteness, are relatively frequent with regard to the interest convention or the model of time and value representation assumed when evaluating mining projects. It is, for example, fairly common that the quantitative evaluation of a project is performed according to the discrete model of time and value representation and the discrete interest convention, and the graphical presentation, supporting this evaluation, reflects the continuous model.Sometimes such an ambivalency means nothing more than just a formal inconsistency; there are cases , however, that may well lead to a serious confusion and /or to inaccurate results . Before this can be demonstrated on a specific example, a concise description of the models of time and value representation used in the evaluation of industrial projects seems to be in order. Although these models (especially the discrete one) have been in common use in the research and practice of financial analysis for considerable period of time, they have been applied rather intuitively, and their forma] definitions are difficult to find even in the standard textbooks on Engineering Economy."

"Inco Gold Company was created in 1987 as an unincorporated business unit of Inco Limited. In 1988, Inco Gold Management Inc. was incorporated to supply management, exploration and engineering services to this unit. The first new project, at Casa Berardi, Quebec, was brought to production in September 1988, less than two years after completion of exploration. For 1989, Inco Gold's exploration and capital expenditures have been budgeted at approximately $94 million, a record level. Inco Gold holds interests in more than 80 precious metals ventures and prospects in Canada, the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and France. The most advanced projects, in addition to Casa Berardi, are at Mineral Hill, Jardine, Montana, where initial production is anticipated in the third quarter of1989, and Crixas in central Brazil, where production is scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter of the same year.BackgroundTraditionally, Inco Limited's mineral exploration has concentrated on nickel and other base metals but since the early 1980s Inco's exploration activity has focussed strongly on precious metals, principally gold. As a result, three deposits have been discovered and developed . In order to accelerate the establishment of a strong gold mining enterprise with its own specific growth and profit objectives, Inco Gold Company was created in 1987 as an unincorporated business unit. At the end of 1988 Inco Gold's share of drill-indicated gold reserves was approximately 14 million short tons containing 3.4 million ounces of gold.At Casa Berardi in northwestern Quebec, one mine is in production and another is planned to open in 1990. Properties at Crixas in Brazil and at Jardine, Montana, U.S.A., were being readied for production in 1989. By 1991, Inco Gold's share of gold production is expected to be 125 000 ounces with a target of 400 000 ounces annually by the mid-1990s."

"An interactive mine planning package has been developed to aid with the tasks involved in generating dragline mine plans. This package employs recent advances in PC-based,3D computer graphics and 3D geologic modelling. A Gridded Seam Model (GSM), capable of modelling rugged topography and multiple coal seams, including folding and faulting, is used to generate the geologic database This model is then integrated with an interactive graphics mine planning system in order to develop one model and one database for the generation of the mine design, the depletion of the coal reserves and the removal of waste material.As well as offering large potential saving in the time required to carry out the planning tasks, the system offers immediate visual feedback to the planning engineer. This can greatly aid in the conceptual understanding of complex geology and mine plans and can allow for the evaluation of a number of mining options within a reasonable time frame.IntroductionThere are a large number of variables that must be taken into account during the development of a dragline mine plan. This is especially true when developing a mine in mountainous terrain, where there is a lack of continuity of the geology and topography over the mine site. Until recently, the complexity of dragline mine plans has prohibited the development of a universal mine planning package that is applicable to all geologic and topographic situations. The majority of the commercial programs that are presently available to facilitate dragline mine planning have been developed for specific mine properties or are limited in the coal geology and mining methods that they can simulate (Brown and Clifford, 1983; White 1983; White and Jones, 1984; Sadri and Lee, 1982; Dagdelen, 1979)."

"The real cost of conversion from ore to semi-fabricated non-ferrous metals has been increasing for many years. Consumer resistance and improved knowledge and techniques now available justify investment in revolutionary as well as evolutionary methods of extraction. Metallurgical factors in current practice which preordain high production costs are identified as: smelters' demand for clean minerals, use of processes with low intensity of working per unit of reactor volume, use of low-velocity reactions, use of long reactor retention times relative to the speed of reactions, dilution of values in solution and commitment to electric power as a source of energy.Six new types of flowsheet are proposed for processing from ore to metal, composed of steps which are economic to construct and maintain and making maximum direct use of fossil fuel and the energy content of minerals. The basic knowledge and technology for developing these flowsheets exists. It is very tentatively suggested that these routes might reduce the capital and production cost for conversion of ore to metal by 30-50%."

Adaptive processing is often related to the mineral composition of the mining block currently processed. The portions of waste, ore and secondary product minerals considered are always positive and typically sum to 100% (i.e. a composition). A typical solution to predict block averages of spatially dependent quantities would be block kriging. However, kriging is based on spatial correlations and it has been repeatedly shown that correlations of compositional data are spurious and blurred by the constant sum constraint. Aitchison (1982) proposed a general solution for compositional problems, based on transforming the compositional data to a set of logarithms of ratios of components, and analysing the transformed scores. The transform is chosen to be invertible to ensure that no information is lost in the process. This methodology avoids spurious correlation problems and ensures coherence between results obtained with different subcompositions. Pawlowsky-Glahn and Olea (2004) adapted the approach for point-support geostatistics, allowing the prediction of point compositions from spatially neighbouring data, without the artefacts induced by standard multivariate cokriging. Unfortunately upscaling the results of this approach with block cokriging is not straightforward, because of the nonlinearity of logratio transforms. Furthermore, we have to consider those nonlinearities created by the dependence on the block composition of extraction efficiency and processing costs of the possible processing choices. This paper proposes a solution for predicting the conditional expectations of the benefit of processing the block with each processing choice using geostatistical simulations of the local values of the composition and the resulting block integrals. The computation for a large number of blocks can be done efficiently using Cholesky decomposition. The approach also allows the calculation of prediction errors for expected compositions and expected benefit at almost no additional computational cost. Such compositional approach is necessary, for example when processing choices depend on proportions of certain minerals after other components have been removed; or if processing alters the composition in a multiplicative way, by partially removing a portion of some components.

"The gas sorption and emission characteristic of coals are important to the planning and conduct of mining operations. Methane drainage from coal strata can also provide a supply of fuel in certain circumstances. Gas emissions have also created hazards during the handling and transport of coals and the release of gas also appears to be related to the yield of fine sizes during mining and processing operations.This paper summarizes studies at the University of Alberta on the permeability and gas emission of certain bituminous coals. Permeability of 'solid' samples was found to be drastically reduced by confining pressure. An emission index, .P, which has been related to outbursting behaviour of coals, has also been related to the proportion of fine s in cleaning plants. Gas sorption isotherms are dependent on temperature, moisture content, the gas involved and the type of coal and can be approximately expressed by the Langmuir or the Freundlich equations. Sorption values in sections taken across a given seam were similar but considerable differences were found in . P indices in the different coal layers of a seam.IntroductionThe emission of gases, especially of methane, from coal has been a subject of great interest (and sometimes a matter of life and death), to those who dig and handle coal since it was first mined from underground pit s. Many studies and investigations have been carried out on gas occurrences and emissions but our knowledge of the precise mechanisms of gas sorption, desorption and flow from coal is still incomplete. "This paper discusses general application for A C variable frequency drives in the mining industry. A review of induction motors characteristics, adjustable frequency controller fundamentals, and three commonly used controllers is presented. General application guidelines for the three different types of controllers; variable voltage input , current source input and pulse width modulated are then reviewed in detail, and an example of the economic benefit of this technology is discussed. IntroductionSoon after static DC variable speed drives were well established in industry, a need for static AC variable speed drives was seen. The first technical papers describing possible systems appeared in the mid-1960s, with commercially available units arriving in the early 1970s. Without exception, static AC drives are substantially more complex than their DC counterparts, but they have some very desirable properties. As compared to DC motors, AC motors are less costly, physically smaller, more reliable, require less maintenance , easily sealed, have good load regulation, are able to run at higher operating voltages, and have little danger of over-speed runaway . These properties are particularly desirable in explosion-proof, submersible or difficult accessibility applications.Variable speed AC drives are now a proven technology. available in packages from Sub-horsepower to hundreds of horsepower, from 115VAC to 4160 VAC. This paper covers the principles of operation of three common types of controllers, application criteria, motor consideration and finally an example of how an AC variable speed drive can pay for itself in terms of energy savings."

"This paper highlights some of the potential application areas of knowledge-based systems in the mining industry. The basic theoretical principles associated with knowledge-based systems are discussed and the justification for mining applications is given. The paper concludes with a brief description of a prototype knowledge-based system applied to scraper selection that was developed at Université Laval on a LISP machine. IntroductionThe beginning of Artificial Intelligence coincided with the conception and development of the first computer systems some thirty years ago. At that time researchers were euphoric about the possibility of modelling the human reasoning process. Soon, however, they discovered that the combinatorial aspect of the set of possible solutions to a particular problem did not permit an in-depth evaluation.In the mid-60s researchers started to look at the heuristic approach because it was more suited to human behaviour with its congnitive abilities (i.e. representing, reasoning, problem solving and advising). The heuristic approach allows possible results rather than exact solutions and it is more rapid and cost effective than the exhaustive combinatorial analysis. The heuristic approach did allow some noticeable progress in the seventies with the development of the first expert system called MYCIN with the objective of diagnosing blood infection diseases."

"The phosphate deposit, located in the Abu Tartur plateau between the Kharga and the Dakhla Oases in the southern part of the Western Desert of Egypt, is the largest of its kind in the country. The phosphates are found in two horizons referred to as the Lower and Upper Phosphate Horizons within the Late Campanian Sibaiya Formation which belongs to the Nubia Group.This paper presents the results of a geostatistical study on the main phosphorite bed at the base of the Lower Phosphate Horizon which contains almost all the commercial reserves in the area. After semivariogram modeling for the phosphate thickness and accumulation, ordinary block kriging was employed to estimate the values of these variables in blocks of400 m by 400 m dimensions. The kriging results, which are presented in the form of contour maps, can be of considerable use in both future exploration and exploitation of the deposit. The grade-tonnage relationship based on the grade estimates derived from the corresponding thickness and accumulation estimates indicates the existence of 453.9 x 105 tonnes of phosphate above a cut-off grade of 18% P2O5. The mean grade of this tonnage has been estimated to be 25.77% P205"

"Full-scale sections of three different types of Grade 483 line pipe have been evaluated extensively. The variations in chemical composition, optical microstructure, tensile properties, hardness and Charpy impact toughness with specimen orientation and location were determined. Significant variations in several properties, notably Charpy shelf energy, impact transition temperature, inclusion content and ferrite grain size, were observed for different locations in the pipes. The results indicate that current specifications call for test samples for the most conservative locations, except for impact tests. Minimum Charpy impact values generally occur at the II2-width location, which may be a more appropriate specified test location than the present I/4-width location. The anisotropy of impact toughness, and the importance of low sulphur content and inclusion shape control for adequate toughness in the transverse/rolling-direction orientation were demonstrated. The orientation of impact specimens is critical for spiral-weld pipe, and the current specification test is non-conservative in that it can give results which are two to three times higher than the minimum value for the steel.IntroductionThis report presents the results of an extensive metallurgical evaluation of three different Grade 483 line-pipe steels. The sample material came from full-scale sections of line pipe, which represented current commercial practice at the time of manufacture (1975-1977). Since then, significant improvements have been made in the manufacturers' procedures for producing skelp and pipe, and the line-pipe specifications have been revised. "The paper discusses coal research in relation to the special needs of Western Canada, with its large resources of lignite and subbituminous coals. Research programs are presented under the following headings: Coal Liquefaction, Pyrolysis, Fluidized-Bed Technology, Underground Coal Gasification and Supporting Investigations. Typical processes are presented and their relevance to Canadian coals is described. The longterm plan of the Alberta Research Council for coal research and the steps taken for its implementation are discussed. Finally, some innovative concepts arising from basic research in coal chemistry are discussed.Canada's Coal ResourcesCanada is richly endowed with coal reserves. With estimated ultimate reserves of 600 billion tons in O.76-m (2.5-ft) thick seams under less than 762 m (2500 ft) of overburden, Canada rank s fourth after the USSR, the USA and Chinatu (see Table I) . Canada's reserves are incompletely explored and estimates are constantly being upgraded. Preliminary information from deeper test-hole logs suggest that similar , if not larger, tonnages occur at depths greater than 762 m (2500 ft).The types of Canadian coals and their regional Distribution(2) is shown in Figure 2. Alberta's subbituminous Plains coal represents about 70% of estimated national reserves. A large portion of the coal can be mined at relatively low cost by surface mining techniques, and it is currently being used exclusively for power generation in conventional thermal plants. This coal, however , also represents a large potential .source of liquid fuels which could equal or exceed that of oilsands and heavy oil. Table 3 compares Federal Government estimates for resources and reserves of fossil fuels in Canada and their recoverable oil content or equivalent.A conservation estimate of only the reserves of thermal coal represents an oil equivalent of 27.6 billion barrels , which equals the recoverable reserves of oil-sand bitumen and heavy oil. A more realistic estimate is probably several times this amount. Although coal can be converted to many other end products, such as fuel gas and synthesis gas for hydrogen and ammonia production, liquid fuels remain the most desirable product mainly because they can be transported more cheaply over long distances and their high energy density makes them uniquely suitable as fuels for transport and agriculture."

"The fire resistance of several mine conveyor belts is evaluated using a new belt-flammability apparatus developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The test apparatus, experimental details and a calculated flammability index (FI) are described.The FI values are useful for ranking the fir e resistance of mine conveyor belts. Values are determined using parameters readily measured with thermocouples, high-temperature flow probes and a methane-oxygen torch, all of which are components of the Bureau's new test apparatus. The FI varies directly with the flame-spread rate and the rate of heat release during burning and varies inversely with the critical (minimum) ignitor energy output.The fire-resistance ranking of nine different belt types using this moderately scaled apparatus is compared with available full-scale data on belt fires. This comparison shows that the ranking based on the FI is consistent with the full-scale data.IntroductionFull-scale fire hazard evaluations of mine conveyor belts are not easily related to the properties usually measured in small-scale flammability tests. The inadequacy of small-scale belt fire tests has been demonstrated in works by Mitchell, Warner and Reinke.Mitchell and Warner showed that certain neoprene (NP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts, which had been approved by the Code of Federal Regulations 30 CFR 18.65, were nevertheless capable of propagating flame over their entire length when full-scale fire conditions were simulated. Comparable results were also observed by Reinke at the Tremonia experimental mine in Dortmund, West Germany, where all belts burned in full-scale tests even though they passed the small-scale tests. Only by reducing the severity of the full-scale test could these fire-resistant belts be grouped on a pass-fail basis."

"Pellet quality has taken on a new dimension during the last ten years. Quality in the seventies was generally defined as adherence to certain physical and chemical specifications. Today, the talk is in terms of how the business is managed, how customer's expectations can be exceeded, not only in product quality, but in service responsiveness.Coke breeze and flux additions, lower silica levels, and improved furnace control practices have all contributed to the improvement of pellet physical and metallurgical properties. Statistical process control has provided additional insight into the parameters that affect pellet quality.Increased customer contact and product quality surveys have heightened our awareness of customer needs and also provide direction for quality improvement test work. Current work is focussed on improving reducibility and understanding the relationship between tumble, fired compression and metallurgical properties.This paper will review the Iron Ore Company of Canada's efforts during the past decade and describe some of its initiatives for the future.IntroductionThe Carol Pellet PlantThe Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Project is located in Labrador City in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland and Labrador , approximately 965 Ian northeast of Montreal. The project consists of mining facilities, beneficiation complex and a pellet plant, which began operations in 1962. The pellet plant consists of six Dravo-Lurgi straight grate machines, regrinding, filtering and balling facilities. The current capacity of the Carol pellet plant is approximately 10.5 million tonnes , while the concentrator has the capacity to produce about 18 million tonnes of concentrate.The orebody consists of specular hematite, magnetite and small quantities of limonite and goethite. The average grade of the orebody is approximately 39% iron."

"A program of mapping, sampling and testing to determine the potential of the aggregate resources throughout Newfoundland and Labrador was commenced in 1978. A 6-km-wide corridor parallel to all transportation routes was selected as the study area.The study consisted of a preliminary surficial interpretation followed by field mapping and sampling. Granular resources were sampled at a 500-m interval and non-granular materials were sampled at a 1.5- to 2-km interval. Data were gathered on landforms and stratigraphy as well as a field description of the sample and deposit types. Particle-size and lithologic analyses of the samples were also conducted.The locations of samples and deposits were mapped on 1:50,000 topographic base maps and summarized for publication at a 1:250,000 scale. Surficial geology maps were produced at a 1:50,000 scale. A computer program is being developed for the search and retrieval of field data.The first phase of the Inventory of Aggregate Resources program is nearing completion and to date has collected information on approximately 9,500 samples throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This data will be used to provide f or the effective management of these vital non-renewable aggregate resources.The mineral aggregate industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is very competitive, but undercapitalized when compared to other provinces. The demand for aggregates is forecasted to increase to in excess of23 million tons per annum by the year 2002.In terms of over-all mineral production, the extraction of sand, gravel and stone has a significant impact when compared to other minerals in terms of value and tonnage produced.IntroductionThe province of Newfoundland has approximately 18,000 km of coastline. A large proportion of the population lives in coastal communities where, traditionally, beaches have been a major source of construction materials. Beaches have, therefore, often been subjected to overutilization, resulting in erosion of back beach areas or adjacent headlands."

"This paper describes the development and application of single-stage fluidized bed continuous ion exchange to the following processes: removal of base metals from mine water; cyanide removal from gold mill waste; uranium removal from sulphuric acid leach liquor; and uranium removal from mine water. IntroductionThe recovery of metals by fixed bed ion exchange has been practiced for many years. However, the operation has been semi-continuous and can only treat clarified liquors. Substantial savings could be made if the operation were continuous, thus reducing the resin inventory, and if the costly filtration and clarification steps could be eliminated. Work has been in progress over the past twenty-five years on the recovery of metals from unfiltered ore leach slurries, heap leach liquors and mine drainage waters containing a small amount of suspended solids. In the case of dilute waste solutions, with suspended matter and high flow rates, filtration is usually prohibitively expensive.Continuous ion exchange operation using fluidized beds has made it possible to reduce considerably the resin inventory and to allow the treatment of unclarified liquors and slurries. The subject has been reviewed on several occasions (1. 2. 3, 4). Although fluidized beds in multi-stage columns are an improvement over previous resin-in-pulp treatment, they have complicated internal structure and I or involved automatic control systems to move the resin stages.Slater and Prud'homme performed studies on multi-stage fluid beds, and concluded that the performance of single, deep fluidized beds of resin with continuous or semi-continuous flow of both phases would be worth investigating, particularly in the case of very dilute metal solutionsoi, A pilot plant was designed and built at CANMET in a cooperative project with Dr. Slateroi. The use of deep fluidized beds of resin (with a large height/diameter ratio) for treating dilute solutions has the attraction of engineering simplicity. Extreme simplicity of equipment design is considered of paramount importance when treating, for example, mine waters at high flow rates, possibly of the order of several million gallons per day. This paper describes the development of the concept of single-stage fluidized bed continuous ion exchange arid reviews the pilotplant development of processes for the treatment of base metal mine water, cyanide waste water, uranium leach liquor and uranium mine water."

"Australia has almost twenty per cent of the Western World's low-cost uranium reserves, located mostly in the Alligator Rivers region of the Northern Territory. At present, only one uranium mill is operating in Australia, but a number of new mills are planned for the early 1980s.Details are given of Australian uranium mining and milling proposals and the measures taken to minimize their environmental impact. Major factors affecting environmental impact are discussed, including treatment of liquid wastes, water management, control of radon and other airborne releases, and disposal of tailings. IntroductionAustralia is entering a new phase in uranium mining and milling activity . In the first phase of operations, between 1954 and 1971, about 10,000 tonnes of yellowcake was produced at five locations. Most of the production came from the mines at Rum Jungle in the Northern Territory and Mary Kathleen in Queensland. In the 1960s, the demand for uranium slumped, and much of the yellowcake produced at Rum Jungle was stockpiled by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. The early uranium processing operations in Australia were typical of overseas practice at that time. Environmental problems were generally given low priority and pollution control measures were unacceptable by today's standards. There was little or no recycling of process water, acid waste streams were not neutralized and tailings dams were poorly designed. At Rum Jungle, oxidation of sulphides in waste heaps, tailings dumps and ore stockpiles subsequently led to destruction of vegetation and heavy metal pollution in a nearby river.In the early 1970s, major uranium deposits were discovered in the Alligator Rivers region of the Northern Territory. Significant orebodies were also located in the Great Artesian Basin in South Australia, in calcrete formations in Western Australia and at several locations in Northern Queensland. According to latest available estimates. Australia has about 160/0 of the Western World's uranium recoverable below $US 80 per kg U. Mining these orebodies will require pollution control measures more stringent than practised previously in Australia."

Is there a relationship among the Sudbury nickel ores, the Cobalt deposits, and the Huronian, Athabascan and North Australian uranium provinces? All are within intracratonic basins, with ore near basal unconformities. There are similarities in the geochemical "fingerprints" pointing to basic igneous rock affiliations. Some show a time relationship to basic igneous activity and to great rift systems. Many basic dykes show radioactivity at their edges. A spatial relationship between the uranium-cobalt-nickel ore at Midwest Lake, Athabasca, and basic igneous rock is reported. These remarks are not meant to imply, necessarily, a direct genetic connection between the basic dykes, etc., and the ore. In some cases, the relationship may be similar to that noted between basic and ultrabasic intrusives and volcanic massive sulphide ore deposits. Crustal thinning in these areas, associated with graben, appears to have favoured volcanic activity, as well as basic intrusives. Probably, the potential of the Huronian should be re thought . Athabascan-type ore may be present . New data on mineralization in Turner Township, Ontario, suggest this. The mineral possibilities of other basins should be reconsidered. It is to be remembered that the Athabascan and Kombolgie basins were neglected for many years. Intracratonic sedimentary-igneous basins contain many of the greatest mineral fields of the world.

Throughput was increased to 1650 t/d in 1985. The mill was expanded in 1986 to treat ore from the A-I zone open pit; an independent circuit was added to selectively treat 5000 t/d of copper-zinc ore. Current total mill throughput through both circuits averages 7200 t/d with the production of approximately 270 t/d of copper concentrate and 230 t/d of zinc concentrate.This paper describes the stages involved in bringing the project from initial laboratory testing to its current status as one of the most important producers of silver, copper and zinc in Quebec and a major employer in the region."

"Sequential blasting has been introduced at Mines Gaspe to reduce the harmful effects associated with the instantaneously primed blasting method. Three stages of modifications had been tried to improve this method: trials of a rectangular pattern instead of the square one, trials of lengthened hole collars at the perimeter of the blast and trials of increased inter-row delay intervals from 35 to 50 ms. Results showed that improvements to the instantaneously primed blasting method were limited by the probability of increasing the number of bootlegs.Doing these modifications allowed the definition of a general approach to improvements before the sequential blasting method was introduced. This general approach included: planning of the mining sequence, following up on the drilling, loading and tying-in of each blast, compiling and evaluating blast results, comparing results from one bench to the other and moving along with one change at a time. This approach has permitted the successful introduction of the sequential blasting method in two steps: trials of blast by rows of delayed holes and trials of hole-by-hole blasts. The optimum result has been analyzed by high-speed camera and by computer blast simulations, The actual optimum sequential blast is obtained with a CORDLINE priming system using period 15, permitted in a large drilling pattern, with an intersequences delay interval of 230 ms and an inner-sequences delay interval of 50 ms.While these modifications were being introduced, a careful study of the drilling and blasting costs was made, which showed a sharp reduction of drilling cost per tonne. Even though there was an increased use of packaged slurry the blasting cost per tonne also dropped. The reduction in cost per tonne was explained by the fact that the average energy factor was maintained while the blasting pattern was expanded.The sequential blasting method, successfully introduced at Mines Gaspe, permits blasts of better quality, reduces the drilling requirements by more than 30% and helps to achieve improved productivity while minimizing costs."

"A new exploration procedure is proposed for volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits of the Abitibi belt. ""Samples"" of acidic volcanic rocks (Si02 > 60%) were compiled from the literature. From the 574 samples collected, 322 were used in each of a number of experiments. Forward inclusion linear discriminant analysis performed on the untransformed geochemical data shows a general depletion in Na20 and CaO along with an enrichment in MgO for a ""proximal"" group of samples relative to a ""distal"" one. The percentage of misclassified samples reaches 20% to 30%, but test sets shows good stability.The exploration procedure was applied to the Normetal deposit, where the authors took 160 samples during the summer of 1977. It quickly leads to the definition of targets for more detailed exploration together with a good recognition of the old known deposit.IntroductionVolcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in the Abitibi belt (Quebec) are mainly found in rhyolites or acidic pyroclastics in the uppermost portion of a calc-alkaline volcanic series (Descarreaux, 1972). The deposits are thought to have formed syngenetically by the action of volcanic hydrothermal exhalations during the waning episode of a felsic volcanic cycle (De Rosen Spence, 1976). Alteration pipes of disseminated sulphides are commonly present. Metal deposition from hot springs, initiating convection cells in a submarine environment, may have been the dominant process in ore formation (De Rosen Spence, 1976)."
