"On the west coast of Cape Breton Island four coal basins have been identified, varying in age and extending from Port Hood northeasterly to Chimney Corner. Those of Chimney Corner - St. Rose in the north and Port Hood in the south belong to the Pennsylvanian Riversdale Group while lying between them are the coal basins of Mabou and Inverness belonging to the younger Pictou Group. Almost all of the coal basins are submarine and coal mining was carried out on all basins at various times. The seams in all basins dip steeply seaward at angles from 10 to 20 degrees but were found to flatten seaward. The coal is ranked as a high volatile C bituminous coal. Ash and sulphur contents are high compared with Sydney coal and the coal has a tendency to spontaneous combustion when stored in large quantities.Of the four basins, the most significant is that of Mabou. At Mabou recent seismic and drilling investigations have indicated that although a sizable reserve of coal may be found offshore the structural problems, particularly faults, and the poor quality of the coal encountered will make it a resource of the future, if at all. Inferred resources have been calculated at 150 million tonnes in four seams over a 10 km2 area and extending 3 km from shore. The quality of the Mabou coals varies with ash, ranging from 5 to 25 per cent and sulphur up to 6 per cent. Calorific value ranges from 25.3 Mj I kg to 31. 7 Mj I kg. The Port Hood and St. Rose -Chimney Corner fields (Fig. 1) contain 16 million and 3 million tonnes respectively, but the Inverness basin is considered to have been depleted. The active mine in this area is the Evans Mine at St. Rose that is currently producing between 30 -50,000 tonnes a year from proven reserves of approximately 3 million tonnes."

Underground longwall coal mining sections may develop explosive mixtures of methane-air in the mined-out gobs. If the panel are operated as bleederless or sealed gobs, progressive sealing along the gate roads as the longwall face retreats limits the flow of fresh air into the gob and thus deprives potentially explosive atmospheres of oxygen. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to simulate the flow of gases in longwall gobs. Modelling indicates that targeted injection of nitrogen through the seals along the gate roads inbye the face can be used to control the size and location of methane and air clouds within the gob and to minimize or eliminate the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of flammable methane-air mixtures in longwall gobs.

"The No. 6 orebody is located 6 miles from the main op.eration of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited and includes open-pit and primary gyratory crushing facilities. Ore is transferred by truck to the secondary crushing facility at the main plant. About 3,500 tons of ore per day are crushed to minus % in. and ground to 68 per cent minus 400 mesh in rod and ball mills for flotation feed. Conditioning and aeration precede rougher flotation, and four stages of cleaning bring concentrates to a grade of 42 per cent Pb + Zn + Cu. Middling products are reground and refloated in a secondary flotation circuit, producing a cleaner feed and a final tails product. Primary bulk concentrate is treated with sulphur dioxide and steam-heated to l 70°F and the majority of the gangue is floated off, leaving a product that assays 57 per cent combined Pb + Zn + Cu and is suitable for marketing. This material is thickened, filtered, dried and loaded into railway cars for shipment to the smelter. Reagent use on flotation is conventional, with many compromises in dosage required to maintain the recovery of lead and zinc in the most advantageous proportions. Many refinements in the flowsheet have been made since start-up in 1966, and more may be made as laboratory and plant testwork indicate possible improvements."

"Numerical simulation of collapse of tunnels in weak rocks is one of the challenging problems in rock mechanics. Collapse can impose technical and financial difficulties during the construction of underground excavations. This phenomenon, particularly in shallow excavations, may lead to propagation of a caved zone toward the surface and formation of chimney subsidence. Chimney subsidence has numerous catastrophic consequences such as the adverse environmental impacts and damage to surface structures in vicinity of excavations. Due to the importance of subsidence in civil engineering, the main goal of this study is to propose an appropriate method for preventing the formation of subsidence in shallow tunnels in weak rocks. The Dolaei road tunnel is investigated as a case study, where a large chimney subsidence has occurred. The geology of the area and the geostructural characteristics of the rock mass surrounding the tunnel are briefly reviewed in this paper. Two-dimensional as well as threedimensional numerical simulations are conducted to study the tunnel stability. Moreover, the effects of staged excavation and pre-supporting method on controlling the ground movements are studied. Outcomes of this study indicate that employing forepoling and staged excavation can be a practical remedy to control the ground movements and prevent the formation of chimney subsidence.INTRODUCTIONPredicting the formation of subsidence, mainly sinkhole subsidence over civil or mining excavations, is a very challenging task. An accurate prediction of subsidence is required for selecting an appropriate control and mitigation system to reduce the level of ground movements and its impact on the surface life (Bétournay et al. 1994; Leca and New 2007). Excavations, particularly in weak grounds, could result in surface subsidence; they modify the in-situ stress conditions as well as the hydrogeology of the area. Construction of unsupported excavations in soft soils and relatively weak rocks usually leads to the formation of a failure zone behind the face. In a very soft ground, the failure zone can extend towards the ground ahead of the tunnel face. Propagation of this zone toward the ground surface results in generation of sinkholes."

"The most important factor in Canadian mining is not the operating cost of current projects but the availability of capital for future projects. The future of mining at depth will be producing ore from the top of the orebody working downward with very effective, tightly controlled mining methods, i.e. either selective mining or bulk mining with well controlled dilution and fragmentation. The key characteristics of future mines will be smaller access excavations, more effective ground support, very precise blasting techniques and more efficient and reliable materials handling systems. Equipment will be smaller and designed for high efficiency and low maintenance, reducing both the capital and operating cost. This means there will be fewer scoops, more continuous mucking machines and conveyor belts, both lateral and vertical.Orepass failures have become accepted and the resultant redevelopment and retramming has become common. The capital investment in so-called permanent ore passes and crusher stations becomes questionable, particularly when crushers are only necessary for less than 10% of the ore going through the system. The best way to solve the chronic instability of ore passes is, as with all of the stability problems at depth, by reducing the excavation size rather than increasing ground support. Smaller access drifts would reduce the capital cost and increase the rate of development as well as reduce the amount of waste to be handled, reducing the ground support and the ventilation requirements. Large drifts and ore passes are essential only for the equipment needed to handle large pieces of ore and the productivity of scoops is very expensive when the requirements for ventilation and large access drifts are taken into account. The key issue is the fragmentation generated by primary blasting.The future of mining in Canada will depend on simple and robust technology geared to the environment in which it will have to operate. Its survival will depend on some-thing much more fundamental and difficult to accomplish than a technological advance — it will require a dramatic change in the way the mining process is managed, how work is organized, how effort is rewarded and how costs are measured — a complete change in mind-set."

THE Plains of east-central Alberta herein described embrace an area from Viking east to the Saskatchewan boundary and from North Saskatchewan river south to Coronation and Monitor (Figure 1). By far the greater part of this area is deeply drift-covered, and .outcrops of bedrock are relatively few and often widely separated. Within the area there are large morainal hills and others of considerable extent that superficially have all the characters of morainal hills but contain a core of bedrock. These latter, then, were hills when the ice sheet traversed the country and only have been modified by glacial agencies. In many places on them, the drift is but a thin veneer, as is certainly the case in part of the Neutral hills (Figure 2) northeast of Coronation and north of Monitor. In other cases, however, as in the Blackfoot hills, southwest of Lloydminster, the drift is sufficiently thick to conceal practically all the bedrock and in many places no information is available as to whether a bedrock core, representing a pre-glacial hill, is present. There is no question, however, that the larger river valleys, as for example those of the North Saskatchewan and Battle rivers, are in part at least pre-glacial. Proof of this can be demonstrated in many places, because obviously the valleys must have been present in pre-glacial times to allow glacial deposits to have accumulated in them. It is also known that inter-glacial deposits occur. At one locality in Battle River valley, in sec. 30, tp. 45, range 2, west of the 4th mer., the following section occurs( l ): 15 feet of boulder clay with granite and other boulders. 56 feet of stratified sands, clays, and gravels containing pebbles of Precambrian rocks and fresh-water shells. From this it is apparent that the 56 feet of stratified sands, clays, and gravels must have derived their Precambrian pebbles from a previous glaciation of which the overlying boulder clay represents another ice advance in this area. Thus, although the river valleys contain glacial and interglacial deposits, they have not been filled by them to such an extent that the drainage has been diverted, and in many places, especially in the case of Battle river and some smaller streams, the size of the valley is altogether out of proportion to the size of the stream it now contains.

"An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the performance of column flotation versus conventional flotation for the recovery of molybdenite from a Newfoundland ore. The objective was to verify the claims made by the inventors of the flotation column, Messrs. Pierre Boutin and Remi Tremblay, that their apparatus reduces the entrainment of fine gangue and other mineral impurities in the froth product. The research included a factorially designed series of tests to determine satisfactory operating conditions of the column. These provided a basis for comparative flotation tests with column and Denver cells. In the course of the work, the action of a few depressants was studied. Results indicated greater selectivity in the column and reduced reagent consumption."

This paper provides an overview of the radiological risk mitigation approach applied by the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) for the remediation of 35 legacy uranium mine sites in northern Saskatchewan where uranium exploration and extraction took place in the 1950–60s. Mining activities resulted in an irregular increase of the gamma radiation dose rate (up to 18 μSv/h). The radiological objectives for the sites include a gamma dose rate at a spot (<2.5 μSv/h above local background), and the dose rate averaged over a hectare (<1 μSv/h above local background). These objectives are generally achievable at the impacted sites through the installation of shielding soil cover. This method may be impractical for site areas with rough terrain (e.g., steep slopes) and/or difficult access. A risk assessment approach is applied to determine if these areas can be safely left uncovered or if additional mitigation measures should be implemented. The risk assessment approach is based on two factors: (i) the ambient radiation dose rates collected through gamma surveys, and (ii) actual land use data collected through various surveys of activities of local community members at the sites. Exposure scenarios based on four land uses are applied to estimate a potential annual dose load for members of the public. The estimated doses are compared with the criterion of 0.3 mSv/a recommended by the Canadian Guidelines for the Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM). If the criteria are not satisfied, a mitigation plan is developed, and post-remediation gamma levels are modelled using GIS tools to evaluate the performance of the proposed mitigations. The proposed approach allows the team to optimize resources for the site remediation so that public exposure to NORM are as low as reasonably achievable after remediation.

The Appalachian region of Canada comprises the three maritime provinces; Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; and Prince Edward Island; and that; part of the Province of Quebec lying south and east of Logan's fault. This; major thrust runs in a gently curving line from lake Champlain to Quebec; city and thence down the valley of the St. Lawrence to pass between Anticosti; island and Gaspe peninsula. To the northwest lies the St. Lawrence; Lowland division of the Interior Plains geological province; a region underlain; largely by early Palxozoic strata; which for the most part lie horizontal; or with low dips; where faults occur they are predominantly of the normal; type; and only locally are the beds cut by intrusive rocks. To the southeast; on the other side of the fault zone; an entirely different set of conditions is; encountered. There; Lower Devonian and older strata stand at high angles; are sheared and thrust faulted; and are intruded in many places by granitic; igneous bodies. The present paper is designed to outline briefly the geological; and structural history of this geological province and to emphasize; the part that structural conditions have played in connection with mineral; deposition.

It is the general belief that the coal deposits on Vancouver Island are extremely large, and easily available. Indeed, they are frequently described by prominent public men and by writers in the press as "illimitable" and "inexhaustible." It is well that the facts that have been established as a result of seventy years of surface prospecting, underground operations and extensive diamond-drilling in this coalfield should be disclosed. HISTORY The presence of coal on the coast of British Columbia was first made known by Dr. W. F. Tolmie in 183 5. This coal was brought to him by Indians from the north-east coast of Vancouver Island, probably from Suquash. In 1850 the existence of coal at Nanaimo was announced by Mr. ]. W. MacKay. Development was started in 1852, and coal was shipped before the close of 185 3. The first operations were carried on by the Hudson&apos;s Bay Company, who operated the mines until 1861, when they sold them to the Vancouver Coal Mining and Land Company. Practically all of the operations in the immediate vicinity of Nanaimo have been carried on by this Company and its successors. In 1869, Mr. Robert Dunsmuir discovered coal about five miles north-west of Nanaimo, at Wellington. The Welling-ton Colliery Company was organized, and began to produce coal from the Wellington mines in 1871, the coal being shipped from Departure bay. This colliery was a large producer for several years, but was finally closed in 1900.

In the past years the enormous weight saving potential of magnesium sheet has been demonstrated by various research projects all over the world. It has been shown magnesium flat products can benefit automotive, aviation, machine tool and consumer electronics industries. Major material problems such as poor formability, corrosion resistance and high production cost still inhibit the application of magnesium sheets in large scale production. The present contribution outlines achievements in casting and rolling technology. The authors developed an adapted strip casting process in which near-net-shape rolling feedstock of several wrought alloys has been produced. During the rolling process, various parameters were varied in order to modify the microstructure and surface quality of sheet. Several temperature cycles, strains, lubricants, roll surface structures and roll coatings have been analyzed. The sheets were examined and tested in deep-drawing experiments. Suitable rolling schedules have been developed for standard and modified wrought alloys. The study concludes with an overview of current industrial solutions and an estimation of the potential cost savings that might result from the adaptation of the process that has been developed.

Mining in highly stressed ground conditions has been an increasing challenge at the Brunswick Mine. Two large regional pillars were established on the 1000 m Level to support the ground for safe extraction of the surrounding ore. The South Regional Pillar contains about 5 million tonnes of ore and the North Regional Pillar has about 3 million tonnes of ore. In the fall of 2000, mining activities were suspended following a series of ground movements around the South Regional Pillar along weak geological structures. After extensive geotechnical investigations, a decision was made to carry out a mass destress blast in the West Ore Zone (WOZ) to cut the principal stress across an area of 135 m along strike and 86 m high. At the end of July 2001, the WOZ mass blast was successfully initiated. Following this success the mine decided to take a similar approach to destressing the North Regional Pillar (NRP). The final mass blast was taken in early February 2003. Advanced blasting technologies, including state of the art electronic detonators and blast simulation, played an important role in achieving the successful blasts. The high precision of delay timing and long delay duration of the electronic detonators ensured accurate and reliable initiations of over 800 blastholes in the WOZ mass blast. Orica?s DMC_Blast (Distinct Motion Code) simulation code was used to study different blasting blocks for the desired timing in the initiation sequence. This paper describes the process of applying electronic detonators in complex blasts, and discusses how blast simulation results were interpreted to guide engineering design of the mass blasts.

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. THIS paper describes a series of tests performed at the Hollinger mill during the past four years, in which both metal and rubber-lined pumps were used for pumping sand and slime. While conditions will not be the same at other mills, it is felt that the information gained from the tests should be of value to other operators and of assistance to them in selecting the most efficient size of pump and kind of lining for economical operation. For the successful operation of pumps with rubber linings there are certain conditions, which, if recognized at the outset, will save the operator a good deal of work and trouble. First is the necessity of keeping sharp pieces of steel, or anything that might cut the lining, out of the pumps. This can be effected by placing screens in the proper locations. Second is to recognize the fact that the rubber lining of the shell, and the rubber cover of the impeller, are subjected to very different conditions. The shell lining, :being at rest and well supported by the metal case, has a relatively easy job compared ? with the impeller covering, which is subjected to centrifugal force and has a tendency to tear itself away from the metal core. Also, the pulp travels through and past the impeller at a high velocity. These two factors, centrifugal force and velocity of the pulp, would appear to set a limit to the speed at which, for a given set of conditions, it is economical to run a rubber-covered impeller. Therefore, a pump should be large enough for the work to be done. To get the best mechanical efficiency, it must be operated somewhere near the limit of its capacity, but this may not give the best overall cost, because the saving in power, due to the high efficiency, may easily be lost through excessive wear on the lining. It would appear that this condition is more critical in a rubber-lined pump than in one lined with metal.

A hypothetical economic model has been developed for diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic using data from recent exploration and mining projects. The model reflects economic conditions as it applies to the diamond mining industry in the Canadian Arctic at the present time. The economic model captures pre-production expenditures, production data, and post-production costs. Before- and after-tax cash flows are derived from the data along with the relevant economic criteria. From the corporate perspective, the model provides guidance as to the minimum size and/or in-situ value per tonne requirements of targets being sought in order to ensure economic success and probable exploration and development expenditures. From the government perspective, the model provides an indication of income and mining tax revenues that can be expected from a particular diamond project. The model shows, on average, diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic are expensive to explore for and develop, but are economically robust. They generate great economic return for mining companies and significant amounts of tax revenue for governments. The fact that diamonds can be transported directly from the mine site by air makes them particularly attractive targets for mining companies that operate in the Canadian Arctic.

"Studies have shown that the roof in coal mines is nearly twice as likely to fail at intersections as at entries due to enlarged roof spans, stress redistribution and other factors. However, the relative stability of intersections in a mine varies, and an improved understanding of what factors impact roof instability can lead to efficient, proactive mining practices that both enhance stability and mining efficiency.A study was undertaken at an underground longwall coal mine to develop a model to predict the stability at the intersections of entries and cross-cuts. The statistical analyses relied upon observational and measured data regarding the development of tension cracks, seepage, intersection geometry, mining practices, geological attributes and geomechanical factors at 783 intersections. Each intersection was given a NIOSH roof. Common data mining techniques, such as multivariate linear regression, multinomial logistic regression, decision trees and probabilistic neural nets, were considered and evaluated to establish correlations and associations between stability and the other variables. Two of the more successful techniques were Decision Trees and Multinomial Logistic Regression. The analyses showed that a number of factors impacted stability:• Overburden thickness (impact on stress concentration magnitudes)• Initial opening area (impact on stress concentration magnitudes)• Sulfur content (depositional environment & impact of mechanical properties, leaching effects)• Intersection type (impact on stress concentrations)• Gob distance (impact on stress concentrations)• Presence or proximity of a particular sandstone (impact on mechanical properties)• Roof bolt type and diameter (impact on reinforcement)Some factors showed no statistically significant relation to stability. These included:• Total area• Supported areaSeepage was a more problematic variable in assess. Seepage is associated with instability, but it is not clear whether seepage occurs as a consequence of instability, for example, through the creation of tension cracks, or whether the intersection has been excavated where water already exists and has degraded the rock prior to excavation, leading to greater instability.Seepage appears related to the geology of the roof rock mudstones, not the sandstones. Tension cracks in the intersections occur preferentially where the Sulfur content is below 0.9%. The Sulfur may relate to mechanical differences in the roof rock, and where the Sulfur is low, the roof is less stable, there are more tension cracks, and seepage is greater. This suggests that the weaker mudstones may be more prone the development of tension cracks, not because these rocks are more brittle, but possibly weaker.2-way and 3-way intersections appear to have less seepage than 4-way, although very few intersections overall have any seepage. This is similar to the roof stability, in which the 2-way and 3-way are more stable. 2-way and 3-way intersections have fewer-than-expected tension cracks, while 4-way have more than expected. These results suggest that four-way intersections are weaker and more prone to tension crack development, also suggesting that increased seepage results from weaker roof conditions, rather than the converse. Thus seepage appears to be mostly a consequence of instability rather than a cause and is higher where there are 4-way intersections, mudstone geology and external loading factors like depth of cover and proximity to gob that promotes crack development. The study also indicated that a better understanding of the mudrock facies could reduce uncertainty."

"IntroductionThe greater part of the iron ore industry in Canada is located along the Labrador-Quebec border on a geological formation known as the Labrador trough. The Labrador trough is a 700 · mile long geosynclinal segment composed of folded and faulted Proterozoic sediments, volcanics and intrusives, extending from Gagnon, Quebec, to the north west tip of Ungava Bay. This geosyncline can be divided into three parts (Fig. 1).The northern unmined part, extending from southern to northern Ungava Bay, is a low grade metamorphosed iron formation.The iron deposits of the central region, represented by Schefferville, are hematite-limonite ores formed by oxidation and leaching of an unmetamorphosed taconite formation. Average iron content of the ore is greater than 540Jo for direct shipping and 50% for plant feed.The deposits of the southern section (Carol Lake, Wabush, Mt. Wright, Gagnon) extend from just north of Carol Lake to Gagnon and is a metamorphosed silica-iron oxide (specular hematite and magnetite) formation averaging plus 30% iron.The mineral wealth of this area was first observed by Father Louis Babel about 1870 and again by Dr. A.P. Low of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1894. However, the remote location hindered development until after 1945. First production of direct shipping ore from Schefferville was in 1954. Production at Carol Lake commenced in 1962.This area now accounts for sixty million long tons (61 Mt) per year of processed iron ore products as follows:This chapter will concentrate on pelletizing and agglomeration as experienced at the Iron Ore Company's Carol Lake operation. However, whenever possible, reference will be made to alternate methods, procedures, equipment, etc."

INTRODUCTION Preparation of this article, at the request of the Committee on papers, has been undertaken in the hope that it may stir up helpful discussion and constructive criticism. The Canadian mining industry is in the dumps and there is no use trying to deny the fact; nor does it help to say that other industries are in as bad or a worse condition. Let us face the situation honestly and see just how serious it is. The entire financial and industrial world is in a state of depression. The gravity of the case is no doubt exaggerated by contrast with the wave of optimism and false prosperity which pre-ceded it. The prevailing gloom and pessimism are just as irrational as was the former super-optimism. As far as we mining engineers are concerned, the causes are quite beyond our control, and it is the effect upon our own industry which interests us most. This effect is an accumulation of mineral products with consequent depression in price to a point where profits have almost, if not quite, disappeared. Whether this accumulation of stocks is the result of over-production or under-consumption is difficult to say, but it would seem likely that there is a combination of the two. The introduction of selective flotation has brought about a large increase in the production of zinc, a moderate increase in the production of lead, and a comparatively small increase in copper. The Antamina project, owned by BHP Billiton Plc, Mitsubishi Corporation, Noranda Inc., and Teck Cominco Ltd. , is a $2.3 billion copper/zinc project, located in the Ancash Department in Perú. The project consists of an open pit mine, a 70,000 ton per day concentrator, a 302 Km. long concentrate pipeline, port facilities, a new access road, power line, and town site. The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes per year of copper and zinc concentrates over a 23-year project life, and will be the third largest producer of zinc and the seventh largest producer of copper in the world. This mega project is the largest mining investment in the country and, during its construction stage, was the most important construction project worldwide. On May 28th, 2001, Antamina commenced testing operations and four months later, it reached commercial production. Antamina was officially inaugurated on November 14th, 2001 by Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo. The construction stage of the project generated 8,000 direct jobs, with a peak of 10,000 employees, and 30,000 indirect jobs. The permanent workforce consists of approximately 1650 employees, the vast majority of which are Peruvian Nationals; around 30% of whom came from the department of Ancash where the deposit is located. Approximately 5,800 indirect jobs will be generated from the project. Independent sources state that Antamina will increase the Peruvian mining exports by 30% and Peruvian GDP by 1.4% within its first year of full operation in 2002. Since winning the privatization bid for the project in 1996, the company has implemented a successful approach to community development and environmental protection based on sustainable development principals. Throughout the development of the project, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to ensure full involvement of the local populations in community development activities and the company?s environmental program. Due to its size, difficult logistics, cultural considerations and financial aspects, the project has faced a number of unique challenges in the area of environmental protection and management of community interaction. Antamina has been innovative in its approach to these issues, and as a result, has set new standards in Perú for environmental and community management, and sustainable development.
