"For general stability analysis of rock slopes, rock mass strength and rock mass disturbance are definitely should be considered. In addition, the impact of earthquakes must be taken into account. In fact, the rock mass strength is very difficult to be assessed which causes the difficulty of analysing rock slope stability. Therefore, an empirical failure criterion, the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, has been proposed. It is one of the most widely accepted approaches to estimate rock mass strength. The rock mass disturbance is important and was found having significant influence on evaluating rock slope stability, especially for rock slope with poor quality rock mass. In the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, the disturbance factor can represent the level of the rock mass disturbance which would provide a reasonable basis for estimating rock mass strength.This research will not only discuss the slope factor of safety, but also consider the influence of the seismic force on rock slope stability assessment using pseudo-static method. In practice, only horizontal seismic coefficient is used. Various magnitudes of the disturbance factor and recommended blasting damage zone thickness are also taken into account. The blasting damage zone thickness considered ranges from 0.5 to 2.5 times of slope height. The research results have potential to be extended and then sets of comprehensive stability charts can be provided for the rock slope stability evaluations. They will be convenient tools for practising engineers. In this study, finite element upper bound and lower bound limit analysis methods are employed. Their applicability has been investigated in some previous studies. The differences between upper bound and lower bound solutions are less than ±10% which would provide reasonable and acceptable range for rock slope stability safety factor estimation."

THE Dome ore-bodies are more or less isolated and are mined. by shrinkage stoping. An interwoven system of veins is mined at Hollinger '.1.nd requires close filling. Deep mining is the problem at McIntyre. Dome ore contains a large amount of free gold, which is recovered on blankets. An all-cyanide flow-sheet is \lSed in the Hollinger mill. Flotation concentration is an important feature of McIntyre mill operation. Therefore, these three mines afford an unusual opportunity to compare gold mining and milling methods. The purpose of this paper is to describe the conditions existing at the Dome, Hollinger, and McIntyre mines and to outline the mining and milling practice at each property. Figures 3, 4, 5, and 7 are reproduced from the Canadian Mining ]011rna/, September, 1935 (Young, A. W., Mining at Hollinger), and Figures 8 to 11 from the Engineering and Mining Journal, November, 1933 (Keeley, D. E., Development and Mining at McIntyre). The photographs (Figures 6, 12, and 13) are by The Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau. The lion share of lithium produced globally originates from South American salars. The standard operation for lithium production utilizes an array of evaporation ponds. This process consume vast areas and is either very slow when relying on solar evaporation - roughly 18 months of residence time; or with very high energy consumption since over 90% of initial water volume needs to be evaporated. A new technology, based on solvent extraction was developed. Results indicate a distribution coefficient up to 30, and selectivity greater than 1,000 towards Na extraction. The loaded solvent is stripped using a strong mineral acid, and the product solution is the lithium derivative of that stripping acid. Utilization of this new LiSXTM technology results in reducing the area needed for a commercial plant as well as reduces the residence time. In addition applying different stripping acids can diversify the product line of such facility.

"This study aims to demonstrate the capacity of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to model and simulate fracture in brittle rock, capture the crack propagation process and determine crack propagation rates for various levels of external loading. In the numerical experiments reported here, a macroscopically homogeneous body of brittle rock, containing a single pre-existing crack, was subjected to tensile stress loading. Simulations concerned with model I crack growth process in 3D were carried out. The process of fracture has been observed under various steady state and dynamic conditions. The numerical results obtained reproduce qualitatively and quantitatively a variety of observed fracture phenomena. Specifically, this study examined the onset of cracks, single dominant cracks that grow across the specimen, crack bifurcations and branching. The density of fractures that can be nucleated and grow to a significant size with and without arresting each other, crack growth speed and stress distribution, all have been consistently and systematically analyzed. Suggestions on potential future developments are made and discussed.INTRODUCTIONFracture and failure mechanics are very important in mining, manufacturing, materials processing, mineral processing, civil and mechanical engineering, and many other disciplines of science and engineering. Yet, due to the complexity of fracture phenomena, no theoretical models of broad applicability are currently available (Bieniawski 1967). The simulation of crack propagation is therefore considered an open question in numerical rock mechanics. Although, a significant body of experimental research on fracture of materials was carried out since the early days of fracture mechanics (circa 1940s) (Poncelet 1946, Mott 1948), often in parallel with the development of fracture mechanics theories as well as with the development of experimental and observational techniques themselves, the experimental results were often done on particular classes of material such as glasses and other very brittle materials. Indeed, a number of specific experimental observations on the behavior of growing cracks in brittle materials were made in the 1940s for which generally accepted explanations based on physical principles are still lacking. Likewise, quantitative numerical modeling, based on both continuum and discrete methods, as a basis for understanding dynamic crack growth is still in a preliminary stage."

Considerable number of methods and procedures has been introduced for trending and progress reporting of engineering, procurement and construction projects. This paper introduces a novel method, designed to augment the set of indices for measuring schedule performance. The concept behind the developed method is to provide early warning by dynamically evaluating the schedule cumulative impact of construction projects. The proposed method is designed to highlight the gradual deterioration in schedule status resulting in a cumulative impact due to the aggregation of small delays encountered during the execution of non-critical activities, and can be used as an add-on utility to existing software systems that perform CPM scheduling. The proposed method is based on a developed formulation for quantification of the Schedule Compression Index, which takes into consideration the remaining project activities durations. The index is developed based on periodic comparisons of ?Current Schedules? and the project ?Baseline Schedule? using the summation of the remaining activities durations. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the application and capabilities of the developed method. It is expected that the developed index together with other schedule performance indices would be of value to decision makers and members of project teams.

"Mechanical and magnetic characteristics of ferromagnetic materials were investigated by a pulsed ultra-sonic technique. Two instruments, the Ultrasonic Attenuation Comparator (Sperry) and the standard type Reflectoscope (Sperry) were used for measurements of the attenuation of the ultrasonic pulse. The effects of elastic tensile and compressive stresses on the attenuation of annealed and cold worked material are described. In addition, the effects of plastic de-formation, relaxation and aging processes and different ultrasonic test frequencies are reported. The results for Armco iron, SAE 1020 steel, SAE 4340 steel and AISI 420 stainless steel are shown. Under the test conditions, the attenuation was found to be largely a sum of two components; a ""dislocation"" component associated with the losses accompanying the oscillations of dislocation line segments and a ""ferromagnetic"" component associated with the microeddy currents generated by magnetic domain wall oscillations. Either of these components might be dominant depending on the nature of the particular specimen and the test conditions. Finally, the possibilities of using ultrasonics in residual stress determinations, in fatigue studies and in the study of the ductile-brittle transition in ferrous materials, are briefly discussed."

Cameco ? McArthur River Operation is a high-grade uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan. Average grades mined are nearly 20%, more than 20 times higher than other operating uranium mines in the world. The significant risks involved with mining this grade has been effectively mitigated using innovative and unique controls, implemented from development and production mining through to ore processing. The types and sources of radiation are presented and protection measures are discussed. McArthur River?s strong radiation culture is evidenced by continually low radiation exposures while transitioning to new mining zones.

"IN 1975, Nova Scotia produced 1.8 million tons of coal with a FOB mine value of $47.6 million. Of this total, about 30 per cent or 600,000 tons was coking coal and the remainder was steam and industrial-grade coal. The Nova Scotia Power Corporation consumed 630,000 tons in three generating stations and 570,000 tons were sold to Sydney Steel for making coke for its steel operations. Exports, principally to Great Britain, comprised 370,000 tons in 1975 in addition to the 300,- 000 tons shipped to other provinces for use by cement and pulp and paper companies. In 1975, just over 100,000 tons of coking coal were imported into the province from Alberta. Before 1975, low-volatile coking coal was traditionally obtained from the United States. In 1975, production came from seven individual mines and one project involving reclamation from mine dumps in Pictou County. Of the seven producers, four are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation, a federal Crown corporation; the remaining three are small independent mines, but, even though small, they are sizeable contributors to the economies of their local areas. After 101 years of continuous operation, Devco's Princess mine was closed in 1975. The Nova Scotia coal industry, in terms of value, accounted for about half of total mineral production in 1975. The industry provides jobs for 3,000 men and women. It is also significant that in 1975 Nova Scotia produced about 6.5 per cent of Canada's total coal production of 28.3 million tons. The lack of integrated information including the Energy/Utility Suppliers with sufficient detail for analysis causes inefficient operation in metallurgical complexes including the Energy/Utility Suppliers . Defining the right context for information use is essential for sustainable operations. This being said, what are we doing to enable people to act upon information and to be aligned to optimize the use of resources like raw materials, energy, water and consumables for an entire metallurgical complex? Collaboration between all company entities is a key component of improving efficiency. Evolution of web technology and object modeling of enterprise assets enables collaboration across the whole business. Operational troubleshooting occurs more quickly as the organization acts on issues to reduce wasteful operation. This paper presents a real time software infrastructure with tools that give users the ability to sift through available data, transform data into information for business continuous improvement and optimization. We will introduce a new technology for analyzing real time data, information and events using multidimensional analysis of information to detect anomalies based on the statistics of the data classified by time events to reduce the information into action. A new paradigm for collaboration at a local and strategic level is proposed to enable the enterprise to become proactive in dealing with wasted time and products. Three examples from the industry will presented and their benefits highlighted.

INTRODUCTION FOR THE purpose of this paper, western bituminous coal is defined as steam coal produced in Alberta and southeastern British Columbia for sale primarily to railways and industries. Before examining present and future markets of this industry, it is proper to review briefly financial and operating conditions within the industry. The report of the Royal Commission on Coal, 1946, supplies financial data from which some conclusions may be drawn. In 1944, the industry as defined above had share capital of $24,886,696. In the fifteen years 1930 to 1944, inclusive, the industry produced: 44,364,211 tons of coal. The profit on this tonnage amounted to $4,678,382.58, which represented 10.6 cents per ton of production. Miscellaneous earnings increased the amount available for dividends to shareholders to a total of $8,487,952.41, which is equal to, 19.1 cents per ton of production. Dividends actually paid in this fifteen-year period amounted to $12,332,040.64, which represented an annual average rate of 3.40 per cent on share capital. It is worthy of note that, in 1944, the net current position of the industry, including investments, was $8,753,874.51. The writer believes that the financial position of the industry with respect to capital, current financial position, and net earnings, has not significantly changed from the fifteen-year period out-lined above. The figures quoted indicate the following situation: (1) The western bituminous coal industry is adequately financed. (2) The industry has followed a conservative dividend policy and has accrued funds for contingencies. (3) The industry has sold its production at very reasonable prices as evidenced by its moderate earnings per ton of production.

ABSTRACT The inevitable uncertainty in modelling spatial variables decreases as more data become available. This reduction depends on the properties of the variable being modelled. Spatially continuous variables show less uncertainty for a given spacing than erratic variables. A geostatistical simulation based approach is developed to quantify the relationship between uncertainty and data spacing. Reference realizations are sampled to condition additional realizations and quantify uncertainty. The procedure is automated, making it straightforward to consider sensitivity and different geological domains. "In a recent publication (SAG 2015), we presented a non-conventional high pressure grinding roll (HPGR)-ball mill circuit as a lower capital cost alternative to the “standard” HPGR circuit. The circuit was designed for the treatment of a hard ore and relatively high tonnage (50,000 t/d). That paper provided details such as flowsheets, layouts, and equipment lists for the two options and compared their calculated capital costs demonstrating significant savings for the proposed circuit. This paper extends the analysis to a third option, a traditional semi-autogenous ball crushing circuit, giving the same level of details and now including the operating cost estimates for all three options for a more comprehensive analysis. Moreover, this work also provides information about the strengths and weaknesses of the non-conventional HPGR circuit when compared to the “standard” HPGR option.This study demonstrates that the proposed non-conventional HPGR-based circuit not only provides a lower overall capital costs for the project if compared to a “standard” HPGR circuit but also brings the capital cost to the level of the traditional semi-autogenous grinding (SAG)-ball mill circuits. In addition, the innovative HPGR circuit provides similar operational cost savings of the “standard” HPGR and thus a significant advantage when compared to the SAG option. With the current capital cost sensitivity for most greenfield projects, the proposed alternative circuit should help make HPGR-based circuits more competitive and thus promote the utilization of a technology that enables higher energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. INTRODUCTIONThe application of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology in comminution circuits is well established for the processing of cement, diamonds and iron ore (Broeckmann & Gardula, 2005), and over the past 10–15 years, this technology has slowly been applied to hard ores in high-tonnage precious and base metal operations. Unfortunately, under the current economic climate, the ability to finance large capital projects has become very difficult and companies tend to have an easier time securing funding if the capital expenditures (CAPEX) are low with a proven process method. The traditional semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill / ball mill circuits easily fit into this mould, having been installed in countless plants around the world over the past 30 years with relatively low capital requirements. In contrast, it has been well-documented that HPGR-based circuits are capital intensive with complex material handling systems (Seidel, Logan, LeVier, & Veillette, 2006). Although these circuits benefit from reduced operating costs with the increase in energy efficiency and the elimination of steel grinding media (Rosario, Boyd, & Grundy, 2009), if the company is unable to secure financing to build the plant, these advantages remain out of reach. With the current trend to retrofit existing SAG circuits with a secondary crushing circuit to achieve design throughput, the opportunity to circumvent this gross inefficiency by making HPGR-based circuits more capital friendly would greatly benefit the industry."

Introduction The geology of the Sudbury nickel field has been studied extensively, but there are few reports dealing with the structure of the interior of the basin. It was not until the Treadwell-Yukon zinc-lead deposits were discovered that attention was strongly directed toward the large-scale faulting that has split the basin parallel to its long axis. This faulting has been responsible for the , ore deposits in the basin and it may be regarded in many ways as the most important geological event, next to the intrusion and differentiation of the nickel eruptive sheet, that has occurred in the Sudbury region. The early reports on the nickel region by Bell, and Barlow, were chiefly concerned with the nickel-copper ores and with the formations of the region. Coleman was the first geologist to map the nickel eruptive as a continuous sheet around the belt and to emphasize its basin character. On the map accompanying his later report, he shows an important offset in the nickel eruptive at its southwest end, where the large fault cuts this portion of the basin, but the fault was not traced into its interior, as little detailed work was clone in the basin at that time. No ore-bodies had been developed outside of the nickel-copper deposits associated with the norite when the map was prepared, and attention was mostly concentrated on the nickel eruptive. Coleman did, however, map and name the various formations found within the basin and, in general, his delineation of these has remained the standard for prospectors and other workers in the field until the present day.

The paper describes an investigation of some of the tensile properties of single crystal vanadium, poly-crystalline vanadium and polycrystal-line tantalum, in the range of: W°C to -196°C. Techniques employed in the preparation and testing of specimens are discussed in detail. Some results of determinations of the temperature dependence of yield stress and ductility are given, and discussed in terms of the Cottrell-Bilby Theory of yielding. At subnormal temperatures, all the body-centred cubic transition metals in the Periodic Table exhibit; a) the "yield phenomenon" in tension, b) a strong temperature and strain rate dependence of yield stress, and c) a large decrease or complete loss of ductility. The yield phenomenon (existence of an upper and lower yield point) has been explained by Cottrell and Bilby ( 1) in terms of the dislocation-locking effect

"1880s - Unmasking the Sudbury Basin Falconbridge Ltd. turned 60 in 1988 but its roots go back more than a century to the discovery and development of the mineral resources of the Sudbury Basin. Nickel was first identified in the area in 1856 but sustained exploration awaited the early 1880s and the advance of the CPR westward from Sudbury. Rock was laid bare in the right-of-way and by forest fires and logging. Reddish oxidized outcropping or ""gossan"" were exposed, heralding the presence of nickel as the shape of this astounding geological formation gradually began to emerge. Many great mines of the area were opened up in this period on the south rim of the Basin west of Sudbury. To the east the ore dips below overburden, however, and Falconbridge remained a mere dot on the map until the turn of the century when Thomas Edison detected a magnetic occurrence by dip needle."

"Because rock salt and pot ash formations contain particles capable of elastic deformation, the material has usually been compared with various rheological models containing elastic elements. Extensive laboratory testing of salt and potash samples resulted in various theoretical conclusions based on conditions quite different from those in a deep mine. It is felt that sufficient data have now been collected from underground measurements and observations to demonstrate the inelastic behaviour of salt masses in a deep mine. The conditions in deep salt strata can be defined as near hydrostatic, because the acting pressures are very high compared to the negligible elastic limit of the salt. The pressure field and creep around the single opening is a function of its shape, size and age. The same factors, together with extraction, determine the behaviour of the mining a rea. The application of the correct analytical method in mine design can significantly improve the excavation techniques and predetermine the long-term behaviour of openings."

A pressure oxidation (POX)-hot cure (HC)-lime boil (LB) process is used in industry to recover silver from refractory gold sulfide ores containing minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite. Pressure oxidation is used to oxidize minerals and liberate occluded gold particles. As such, iron goes into solution and under acidic and high temperature conditions often precipitates as basic iron sulfate (BFS). BFS consumes excess lime during neutralization prior to cyanidation. Therefore, a hot cure stage is required to re-dissolve BFS back into solution. BFS re-dissolution consumes acid and produces ferric sulfate. In the presence of silver, these conditions favor the slow formation of silver jarosite. Silver jarosite is refractory to cyanidation, and must be broken down prior to cyanidation. This is done in the lime boil to produce a cyanide-soluble silver hydroxide. A study was conducted to investigate parameters that affect the precipitates that form in each stage of the POX-HC-LB process.
