T HE APPROACH to maintenance must always be ?completely positive: there must be no question of putting off difficult problems until it is more convenient to tackle them. By this it is meant that a piece of machinery or equipment which, by experience, is known to be due for a check should not, merely because it appears to be operating satisfactorily, be left until it reaches a critical .condition and breaks down. The mentality of the Maintenance Manager must be completely orderly and methodical and he should, in fact, possess a ledger-book mind, having a debit and credit outlook. The debit side would be that applying to time out of service, cost in wages, material, personnel involved, etc., and the credit side that relating to continuous operational time of the locomotive and therefore to the ultimate benefit of the mine and the personnel who work there. The Maintenance Manager is not concerned with design problems, and although he and the personnel under his jurisdiction are not engaged in productive work, he and his staff do, nevertheless, add greatly to or detract from the overall efficiency of the organization. Provided the machinery placed in his care is good to start with, he must take the best steps he possibly can to keep it running. However, he may, on occasion, be forced to improvise and this is where the ingenuity of a clever man rises to the occasion.

The Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) Navachab single stage SAG mill has provided an excellent setting for incremental optimization. Over the past decades, several interventions have resulted in marked improvements in specific performance; including steel ball scat removal, re-design of the mill lifters, replacement the pebble crusher and cyclone cluster, as well as the use of a vibrating screen in place of a discharge trommel. Recent initiatives now include an operating fine DMS circuit, studies on pre-crushing of the ROM feed and also fine-screening as an alternative to hydrocyclone classification. The current optimized state of the Navachab mill allows it to operate at approximately 20% higher efficiency when compared to mills of similar shell dimensions in gold mining, treating similar ore. This paper describes the systematic improvement of the SAG circuit to its current state.

"Plasma or thermal sprayed coatings are becoming more widely used in a wide range of industrial applications. The preference to use thermal sprayed coatings is mainly attributed to its superior wear, and corrosion resistant properties akin to hard chrome but without the harmful health implications of chrome in the coating process. Specifically, High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) plasma sprayed Tungsten Carbide & Cobalt (WC/Co) coatings are presently being tested on aircraft landing gear. This coating can be efficiently applied and is highly resistant to corrosion and wear. However, HVOF coating's durability also makes it difficult to be stripped for inspection and overhaul. Current coating removal methods usually involve a multi-step process whereby the coating must undergo diamond wheel grinding, chemical dipping, grit blasting, ultrahigh pressure (UHP) 380 MPa (55 Kpsi) water blasting, and subsequent chemical dipping, depending on the type and thickness of the coating. As explained by Yan, et al [l]"" a unique method has been developed for removing HVOF coatings with the use of only water. The method consists of modulating a stream of water at a pressure of only 69 MPa (10 Kpsi) with ultrasonic waves to generate a forced pulsed waterjet. The resulting cyclic loading of the hard coating due to the impact of the water pulses easily causes it to flake off the substrate. This paper will briefly describe the fundamentals of the forced pulsed waterjet technique with an emphasis on insitu applications of the removal of various plasma and HVOF coatings."

This paper explores the connection between the stresses observed and the failure mechanisms present in the modelled cemented paste backfill. In order to look at this connection, the authors have used a previously developed model to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the model?s strength and permeability input parameters. The results from the sensitivity analysis were then compared to determine what causes modelled stresses and failure mechanisms to vary. Increased insight into the behaviour of the modelled paste will help clarify how paste behaves in the field.

Based upon research findings from several countries, the combination of microwave and mechanical means to break hard rock holds promise for the future. To achieve this goal, it is essential to understand the laws governing strength reduction of hard rock, such as granite, induced by microwave irradiation. Two aspects to consider are: 1) laws associated with the tensile strength of hard rock after microwave irradiation and 2) the sensitivity of different types of rock strengths to microwave energy. In this study, granite with a range of tensile strengths was exposed to microwaves for various time periods to compare the response of rocks with different strength values exposed to the same microwave irradiation. In addition, a method based on hotspots is presented to explain the mechanism by which granite strength is reduced by microwave irradiation. Granite extracted from Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi Province, China is used in the research. ?50 × 50 mm cylindrical granite specimens were exposed to microwaves at a specific power level. The strength values of the heated granite specimens were compared with those of unheated specimens. Through the comparison and analyses, relationships were determined between 1) reduction in granite strength and microwave irradiation time period, and 2) granite strength and sensitivity to a given energy of microwave irradiation. Finally, a mechanism to explain the experimental results is proposed. Research findings will aid in the design of a microwave + machine rock-breaking system for use in rock breakage in underground mines at depth and for future mine applications on earth and other planets. In addition, the experimental approach could be used to test other rock types to further our understanding of rock damage induced by microwave irradiation.

"An Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) case study was completed for a mine in Ontario, Canada by SRK Consulting, Inc. The purpose of the study was to analyze the ventilation system to determine whether and which system improvements could reduce the overall electrical power demand of the mine. Financial incentives are offered by the IESO IAP grant program to help cover the capital costs of these improvements. This study included the completion of a full mine ventilation survey as well as measurement of a full suite of electrical parameters of the surface and underground ventilation fans. After these measurements, a base ventilation model was created and established as the system baseline. Changes to the ventilation system were modeled, and their effects on the power demand were projected. The results of the study showed that several improvements were possible which may significantly improve the efficiency of the ventilation system and reduce mine electricity demand.INTRODUCTIONIn 2017, a ventilation study was conducted in accordance with the Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) at a mine in Ontario, Canada. The IESO IAP is designed to assist eligible transmission-connected Canadian companies operating in Ontario to fast track capital investment in major energy conservation projects. The program will provide financial incentives to encourage investment in innovative process changes and equipment retrofits to reduce electricity consumption on the provincial system and to help companies become more competitive by positively impacting their bottom line. There are now four initiatives under the Industrial Accelerator Program:1. Retrofit2. Process & Systems, including Small Capital Projects3. High Performance New Construction4. Energy Managers – a new initiative under the Industrial Accelerator ProgramWithin the program, companies may propose energy saving changes to their current systems where applicable and appropriate. Companies may then be awarded funding to implement the proposed changes. The program allows partial financial compensation to implement certain energy saving changes that would otherwise not be considered due to high capital costs. For larger projects, such as underground mine ventilation systems, a detailed engineering study must be submitted. This study must detail each energy saving change or measure, its savings, and calculate the financial incentives using the IESO IAP Payment Structure. Solar Hydrogen Energy Corporation (SHEC Labs) recently constructed a pilot-plant to demonstrate a Dry Fuel Hydrogen Generation System that is powered primarily by sunlight focusing-mirrors. The pilot-plant consists of: A Solar Mirror Array and Advanced Solar Concentrator and Shutter System; and two thermo-catalytic reactors to convert Methane, Carbon Dioxide, and Water into Hydrogen. Results from the pilot study show that Solar Hydrogen generation is feasible and cost-competitive with traditional Hydrogen production. More than 95% of Hydrogen commercially produced today is by the Steam Methane Reformation (SMR) of natural gas, a process that liberates Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere. The SMR process provides a net energy loss of 30 to 35% when converting from Methane to Hydrogen. Solar Hydrogen production provides a 14% net energy gain when converting Methane into Hydrogen since the energy used to drive the process is from the sun. The environmental benefits of generating Hydrogen using renewable energy include significant greenhouse gas and criteria air contaminant reductions.

Geophysical studies have extended seaward in recent years, and the important discoveries which have been made have led to a better understanding of geological processes. A present source of certain minerals, the sea will eventually serve as an important source of desalinated water. The continental helves, in particular, represent a potential mineral resource. The expansion of Canadian oceanographic effort that is now underway will eventually lead to the exploitation of the wealth beneath the sea. THE subject of this symposium, which emphasizes the word "geophysics," the specialties of the speakers who are contributing and the nature of the audience at first made me believe that I, a a physical oceanographer, would be out of place. However, I shall undertake to classify myself as a geophysicist, and shall arrange my remarks on my specialty o that they might be of interest to those of you who are predominantly geologists, metallurgists or mining engineers.

"The Red Lake Gold Shore mine is 4/5 mile west of the town of Red Lake, Ontario, and a mile northwest of the Howey mine. It came into production in August 1936, and in a little over 2 years produced 21,099.58 oz. gold from 83,949 tons milled.An investigation of this deposit was made by the writer during parts of September and October, 1937t. The geology of the deposit is also discussed by H. C. Horwood(2) , and the characteristics of the ore were investigated by the Bureau of Mines, Ottawa (1).The orebodies are pipe like and close together, in a north-northwesterly trending zone of dykes, veins, and shear zones in a granodiorite stock, just south of a pronounced valley with a trend of N.65°E. believed to lie along a strong shear zone and fault . The dykes, veins, and mineralization are believed to have been successively emplaced along structures having three general trends and that were due to compressive stresses that alternated, at least four times, from west of north to east of north. In common with many other gold deposits, the gold mineralization here occurred late and followed the last east-of-north stresses.WALL-ROCKSThe mine is within the Dome stock, % mile from its southeast margin. Near the mine the rock is a pink hornblende-biotite granodiorite, grading within short distances, but not abruptly, into a dark grey variety. Near the workings at least, scattered small inclusions form about ½ to 5 per cent of this body. Most of them are fine-grained, angular, or partly rounded, greenstone fragments, but some have been partly granitized and feldspar has been developed in them."

"The Wabana iron ore deposits occur as flat-dipping beds of oolitic hematite and chamosite, of Lower Ordovician age, which outcrop for 3 miles along the northwest coast of Bell Island, Conception Bay, Newfound-land, about 16 miles from St. John's.The deposits occur in three zones, Upper, Middle, and Lower beds, separated respectively by 30 feet and 215 feet of shale and sandstone. They are primary sediments laid down in a shallow tidal basin by the precipitating action of a marine environment on iron-rich fresh waters flowing into the basin.The ore-bearing zones, while of wide areal extent, are not uniform beds of hematite that can be mined wholesale. The action of waves and currents during sedimentation; the delta pattern, velocity, and transporting power of streams flowing into the basin; the contours and oscillations of the sea bottom on which the sediments were laid have all been fundamental in the emplacement of richer and thicker mineable sections, and of lean zones so intercalated with shale as to be unmineable.The preservation of the deposits is due to their location in the Conception Bay syncline and to a considerable upthrust of the country east of the bay in post-Ordovician time.The hematite deposits were first recognized as such in 1892, and soon after were acquired by the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co. They are now being mined by Dominion Wabana Iron Ore, Limfred, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, Limited. Production started in 1895, and up to the end of 1955 totaled 58,588,516 long tons of hematite ore, having an average dry analysis of about 51 5 per cent iron, 11 8 per cent silica, 0·9 per cent phosphorus, and l ·5 per cent moisture. About 40 per cent of the total tonnage mined has come from surface stripping and on-shore mines. These areas have now been almost completely depleted, and operations are confined to submarine mines extending for two miles off shore under the waters of Conception Bay. Three sub-marine slopes are currently in operation, Nos. 3 and 4 working in the Lower Bed and No. 6 in the Middle Bed. A general picture of the workings is shown in isometric projection in Figure 1. Submarine mining has been entirely by the room-and-pillar method, with an extraction of 60 per cent. The deepest workings, at a vertical depth of 1,850 feet below sea-level, have a rock cover of about 1,500 feet. No mining is done in areas where the rock cover is less than 200 feet. To date mining has explored six square miles of a potential area that may exceed 50 square miles."

For a number of reasons, solids entering and leaving facilities for the treatment of minerals are becoming increasingly finer. Such materials pose problems throughout processing. Solids featuring small particle sizes tend to dusting, result in losses and segregation, exhibit various storage, transportation, and metering problems, and fine particulate effluents can not be easily captured, used and/or recycled. Sustainable mineral processing must minimize the exploitation of natural resources and avoid the need for disposal of wastes. The first requires the use of lower quality raw materials and upgrading, which typically results in the production of fine grained concentrates, and the latter encourages the recycling of wastes and byproducts or efforts to investigate them as sources for secondary raw materials or other beneficial applications. To overcome the difficulties associated with fine particulate solids, size enlargement by agglomeration is necessary. The resulting products have free flow characteristics, do no longer dust or segregate, and are sized and shaped as required for optimum processing. In addition, agglomerated materials may be engineered to feature desirable structure, composition, and a number of related, improved properties. Such engineering may be applied for the modification of fine run-of-mine and up-graded minerals as well as the production of secondary raw materials from by-products or wastes. By the interdisciplinary application of size enlargement by agglomeration waste-free processing of minerals becomes feasible.

"Nickelhütte Aue GmbH is specialized in the recycling of waste materials containing non-ferrous metals. We treat nickel, copper, cobalt, vanadium, molybdenum and precious metal containing materials like spent catalysts, ashes, dusts, grindings, liquids, slurries and sludge's as long as they contain one or a combination of the above mentioned metals. In our pyrometallurgical works we produce non-ferrous metal concentrates suitable for further treatment in our hydrometallurgical plant where we refine Ni-, Cu-, Co- and V-chemicals. Our production is based on synergy effects due to the combination of pyro- and hydro-metallurgy. As an example we can mention our heat recovery system and internal recycling of by-products. "The selective separation of palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh) from a hydrochloric acid solution by solvent extraction was investigated using amide-type extractants, i.e., N,N,N’,N’-tetra-n-octyl-thiodiglycolamide (TDGA) and N-n-hexyl-bis(N-methyl-N-n-octyl-ethylamide) amine (BisAA). The separation experiments employed two separation schemes: (1) extraction of Pd with TDGA and that of Rh and Pt with BisAA; and (2) extraction of Rh, Pd, and Pt with BisAA. Separation scheme 1 achieved the highly selective separation of each metal. For separation scheme 2, Rh can be recovered prior to Pd and Pt, despite having a lower selectivity for Pd/Pt than separation scheme 1. INTRODUCTIONThe recent increase in the use of platinum group metals (PGMs) in industry (especially auto catalysts containing palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh)) has lead to their increasing waste; therefore, improvements in the recovery techniques for PGM have received significant attention. In metal refineries, PGMs are mainly separated and purified by solvent extraction (Cox, 2004). The extraction process used in INCO’s Acton precious metal refinery is one of the most famous commercial processes and is utilized worldwide. In this process, silver is first removed as a residue (AgCl), and then gold, Pd and Pt are extracted from hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions using dibutylcarbitol (DBC), dialkylsulfide (DAS), and tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP), respectively. Finally, Rh remains in the raffinate (Barns & Edwards, 1982).The development of a successful solvent extraction process depends on the choice of the appropriate extractants. We have studied the extraction of PGM using N,N-disubstituted amide compounds (Narita, Tanaka, Morisaku, & Abe, 2004; Narita, Tanaka, Morisaku, & Tamura, 2006; Narita, Tanaka, & Morisaku, 2008a, 2008b). They are relatively stable against acids, and their metal extractability can be improved by changing the side chain length and/or introducing additional donor atoms like sulfur and nitrogen. We have recently found that thiodiglycolamide and an amide-containing tertiary amine have good extractabilities for Pd and Rh, respectively."

"Dry crushing trials at pilot scale have shown that the IMPTEC Super-fine Crusher has the capacity to generate ultra-fine products from hard mineral assemblages presenting at either coarse or fine feed sizes. The super-fine crusher was introduced at the 27th International Mineral Processing Congress in Santiago Chile, with results from a range of duties, which demonstrated the crusher’s potentially expansive operating scope. This paper focuses on current preparations to progress the technology from pilot scale to commercial scale within a concrete production plant, where lead blast furnace slag will be crushed to ultrafine sizes to generate an active silica product for use as a supplementary cementitious material, which can replace Ordinary Portland Cement. A key objective of the operation is to demonstrate an economical route to reducing the cost of concrete production, improving concrete quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The paper also highlights the potentially key contribution super-fine crushing can make to the long-term viability of iron ore beneficiation by simplifying comminution flow-sheets and reducing operating costs. There is every indication that the technology has the potential to feature universally in metalliferous and industrial mineral flow-sheets. INTRODUCTIONToday’s IMPTEC super-fine crusher is the successful end product of development work over 19 years and is the third particle size reduction device conceived, built and tested over that time. The concept evolved as engineering design progressively developed a mechanism capable of harnessing a highly efficient combination of fundamental particle breakage mechanisms. Early development trials at pilot scale indicated that super-fine crushing had the potential to establish a wet or dry, media free, low energy route to ultra- fine products from hard mineral assemblages. Having achieved some impressive results from open circuit pilot tests on fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag it became clear that the cement industry may well provide opportunities to apply the technology commercially. Following expressions of interest from local cement and concrete plant operators, IMPTEC negotiated an agreement to undertake commercial trials with a SFC 350 super-fine crusher installed on site at a concrete supply plant in South Australia. Super-fine crushing scope was recently expanded following further expressions of interest from research groups involved in the processing of iron ores. Pilot trials are progressing in these areas."

"IntroductionScreens are used in coal preparation plants for four basic functions, namely:I. Scalping off large size run-of-mine coal for initial size reduction;2. Sizing of coal treatment in different process streams;3. Removal of magnetite (dense medium) from clean coal and refuse;4. Dewatering.Canadian coal preparation plants use screens extensively in the above functions. Even plants where no beneficiation takes place, screening and crushing are carried out in the size reduction process.Description of Process UnitsThe type of screen used in coal preparation plants generally falls into the following categories:Fixed Screens and Grizzlies (for large coal)Often a simple rugged construction, either set horizontally above a bin or inclined with the coal flow.Fixed Sieves (for fine coal)They are used for dewatering and/ or size separation of slurried coal or discard. The sieve bend, the Vor-Siv, the Wilmot riffle and the cross flow screen fall into this category. The most commonly used in coal preparation plants is the sieve bend, Figure 1. Coal slurry is fed tangentially onto a fixed curve wedge wire screen deck. The solids are separated at a predetermined particle size, delivering a partially dewatered overproduct and a dilute underflow. The coal slurry is initially delivered to the sieve bend via a feed box. A series of baffles spreads the feed evenly across the width of the deck. The slurry drops from the last baffle, passes through the feed spout and is fed tangentially to the screen. It is important that the feed should contact the surface immediately at the front end of the sieve bend. It is possible to lose as much as 250Jo of screening area with a poorly fitted screen box.The full stream of coal slurry flowing over the sieve bend decreases in depth, in increments of approximately •;4 the slot width each time it passes a slot. Sieve bends make a size separation at 112 to 2h the slot width. This feature virtually eliminates blinding of the screen surface. Slot sizes are normally quoted in millimetres, available standard slot sizes are from 2 mm to 0.125 mm. The sieve bend is also widely used in coal preparation for preliminary dewatering."

"Environmental issues have evolved considerably over the last two decades. The main contributing factors, to name a few, have been the changing values of modern societies, the globalization of trade and its linkage to environment, evolution and accessibility of information/ communication technologies, better educated populations, climate change, longrange transport of toxics, and the increasing influence of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and multistakeholders.As well, environmental management of mining operations had to be realigned in order to meet these new realities and to respond to more elaborated regulations oriented towards sustainability. Environmental management systems (EMS) have been introduced not only to meet the assurance of conformance to regulations but also to prevent pollution and to apply the continuous improvement of mining processes. EMS models have been developed and certification to international standards (e.g. ISO 14 001) is a common practice.Globalization has imposed challenges and additional requirements to environmental management. Developing a mine in emerging countries implies dealing with international agencies, local communities, and a variety of government infrastructures to obtain a “license to operate.” This paper presents the structure of Cambior’s EMS and how it was adapted and implemented in the company’s operations in South America."

Attracting and retaining workers in mining industry has become an uphill battle to many mining companies. As workers with significant experience retire, it is getting more difficult to attract not only new workers but also top talent to the mining industry to replace professionals exiting the workforce. To make matters worse, students’ enrolment in the post-secondary mining programs in Canada and USA is continuously declining year after year for reasons not directly linked to job market. This raises a question of how can the future needs of mining be met? This paper focuses on avenues for collaboration of industry and educational institutions to meet the current and future needs of mining. It provides effective approaches that mining institutes can engage with program advisory committees, role of the mining industry in supporting both faculty and students, how to harness the benefits of diverse workforce in the country and use of innovative technologies to attract young workers in mining. This work presents Human Resources (HR) professionals with tools that they can use to hire and retain skilled workers with strong interest to work in the mining industry. It also provides HR professionals with an opportunity to re-evaluate their restructuring practices during economic downturns as they reduce number of employees on temporary or permanent basis. The paper stresses the need of working together of the mining stakeholders including mining industry, academic institutions, First Nations’ communities and provincial(state) and federal governments to meet the current and future demands of mining as the industry experiences shortage of labour and low students’ enrolment in post-secondary mining programs. It is shown that mining educational institutes can enhance their programs and recruitments through establishing a better communication with all stakeholders. This communication can be facilitated by creating a national advisory board, to work with all mining programs at the national level for sustainable mining.

In this study the effect of solidification rate, T6 and T7 heat treatments on thermal fatigue resistance of A319 aluminum was investigated. Increasing of the solidification rate improved the thermal fatigue resistance of the alloy by refinement of the microstructure. The most sensible areas for thermal fatigue crack growth were the eutectic zones, T6 and T7 heat treatments improved the thermal fatigue resistance of the alloy by enhancing of the matrix resistance against the crack propagation. The slight reduction of the thermal fatigue resistance after T7 heat treatment is attributed to coarsening of the precipitates which reduces the matrix resistance.

A thermo-chemical model of the Peirce-Smith copper converter in blowing the copper stage has been developed to predict the molten temperature. The key assumption of the model was that white metal and gas phases in the converter were in thermal and chemical equilibrium. In this model, the chemical reaction of white metal and oxygen was accomplished completely. So long as sulfur existed in the bath, the generation of Cu2O was frozen. The reaction rate was considered to be constant and controlled by the reacted sulfur. The converter temperature was calculated by heat balances over time. The model was validated by a detailed comparison with measured industrial data. A good agreement was obtained. The converter temperature depended on process parameters such as oxygen efficiency, molten emissivity and oxygen enrichment.

Gold has been mined from a variety of deposit types that range in age from Archaean to Recent. The large variability in the geological settings of the gold deposits implies transport and concentration of gold by magnetic, hydrothermal and sedimentary processes. The factors that control the concentration of gold at certain sites and the grade estimation thereof remain major topics of debate. Due to the complex nature of the Witwatersrand Basin a mineralogical study, including mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical investigation was launched on TauTona Mine in order to characterize the various reef facies. The aim of the investigation was to determine if a correlation could be found between macroscopic characteristics of the reef, hanging wall and footwall, and the microscopic nature of the ore (especially gold grade). Petrograpgic and mineralogical results indicate that a correlation exist between gold, detrital and hydrothermal sulphides, uraninite, carbon, detrital heavyminerals and phyllosilicates. No correlation exist between gold and Mg, Fe or S. It appears that clast supported reef is of higher wade than matrix supported, but more work is suggested. No correlation exists between reef thickness and grade. The reef samples had the lowest phyllosilicate content compared to the hanging wall and footwall samples with pyrophyllite the most dominant. All of the correlations diagrams showed significant scatter and suggests a multi- factorial mineralization model. Gold distribution is also controlled by sedimentary features and thus it is not possible to select a single model for the formation and distribution of gold. It is evident that both sedimentary and hydrothermal factors influenced the mineralization and gold distribution on TauTona mine. It is thus essential that all related theories be incorporated in the development of a grade prediction model.
