This paper describes the concentration processes of the Sullivan. Concentrator, including crushing , transportation, sink-float, grinding , flotation and dewatering. Handling of hot muck has had a deleterious effect on most of the processes, resulting in significant operating problems and poorer metallurgy. These problems are described -in detail. THE SULLIVAN CONCENTRATOR is situated in Kimberley, high up in the Purcell Range of the Selkirk Mountains, at an elevation of 3,600 feet, approximately 4 miles from the Sullivan Mine (see Fig. 1). The original plant went on stream on August 23, 1923 at a designed capacity of 2,500 tons per day. This has been increased in stages to its present rated capacity of 11,000 tons per day. The latest stage was in 1949, when several major projects, including the underground crushing plant, the sink-float plant and the installation of a rod mill, were completed. Some 112,800,000 tons of ore have been treated in this concentrator to November 1975. The plant started on a 48-hour/ week schedule, but was reduced to 44 hours/week in October 1946 and down to 40 hours/week by the end of 1949. Except for a 6-month period in 1952 when the mill operated continuously, the 40-hour/week, Monday to Friday schedule was in effect.

The modeling of the extrusion of 6061 alloy and its composites with 10 to 20 vol% Al203 or SiC by two techniques. The uniaxial finite element method FEM (DEFORM" ) provided force-stroke curves and temperature rise over the range 450-500 °C, 2.6-5mm/s and extrusion ratios of 31 and 64. The traditional technique considers ideal work and redundant work as well as friction and uses average temperatures and strain rates. The two techniques are used to clarify each other and to extend the analysis to 400 and 350 °C. The calculated efficiencies are compared to measured values in extrusion trials and to values derived for 7075 extrusion analyses. The analyses are based on constitutive equations determined by torsion testing tests.

"The use of liquid copper as a medium for zinc extraction has been used in the Warner Process as a method of processing zinc-lead sulphide ore. The recovery of zinc metal is based on the reaction:ZnS(s) + 2Cu(l) = Zn(g) + Cu2S(l)In this method, thermodynamic and phase equilibria investigations of the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems are of importance and form the basis for the liquid sulphide phase which appears as a product and is used as a solvent in the Warner Process. Phase relations in the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary systems were determined experimentally at 1473°K to provide a fundamental basis for the new zinc smelting process. The results show that the solid solubility of ZnS in the two systems is very small (2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in FeS, 4 wt% ZnS in Cu2S for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; less than 0.5 wt% ZnS in both PbS and Cu2S for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). The Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS in the liquid mixtures and the vapour pressure of zinc over the matte in both systems is relatively large (?° = 7.7 – 15.8, Pzn(atm) = 0.088 – 1.026 for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; ?° = 8.9 – 12.9, PZn(atm) = 0.075 – 0.214 for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). On the FeS-ZnS join, the only phases detected are FeS and iron-rich sphalerite (Zn, Fe)S. The binary join mixture occurs at about 92 wt% FeS-8 wt% ZnS at 1473°K. Electron microprobe examination of the quenched samples indicate about 47 wt% to 48 wt% FeS in sphalerite and about 2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in the iron sulphide phase. On the Cu2S-ZnS join, microprobe analysis reveals that the maximum solubility is 4 wt% Zn in liquid Cu2S and 3.6 wt% Cu in solid ZnS. In the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary system, microprobe analysis of the quenched samples indicate on average, 5 wt% ZnS in the liquid phase region. The only phases detected on the PbS- ZnS join are ZnS and PbS. The eutectic phase contains, on average, 13 wt% ZnS. The phase relationships, very low solid solubilities of zinc sulphide in the liquid mixtures of both Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems, coupled with the high Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS as well as the high vapour pressure of zinc over matte all favour the partitioning of zinc metal into the vapour phase. This new process is cost effective and bypassesthe expensive and tedious conventionaltechnique of zinc production involving oxidationof the sulphide ore by roasting followed bya reduction process to extract the zinc. Theresults indicate that a new zinc smelting technologyusing the Warner Process would bemore efficient and preferable over the traditionalmethods of zinc extraction."

Impact of horizontal stresses on stability of underground workings in mines is a very important issue in underground mining. Identification of the initial state of stress in the rock-mass should be one of the main actions taken into account while designing and carrying out the mining activity in underground mines. The paper presents the tests on three dimensional stress pattern in Polish copper mines, owned by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. Group, carried out in 2012. The research program covered 7 measuring stands in two mines; their average depth was about 1000 m. The main aim was to identify the values and directions of horizontal stresses in order to optimize the extraction and to improve the safety. The overcoring method with the use of CSIRO HI type probe was applied. The paper also describes the measuring technique which was developed for the purpose of specific mining and geological conditions of KGHM mines, taking into consideration the natural hazards encountered there as well as technical and operational capabilities with regard to drilling equipment. The experience gained during the underground measurements and the issue of making such measurements in underground copper mines in Poland are presented in the paper. The stress patterns obtained during the underground measurements are of application importance for the process of designing the spacing of mine workings and improving their stability and mine support selection.

The Autogenous milling of ores holds an increasing attraction as the focus moves towards reducing energy usage, both direct and embodied in grinding media. However, most of the early AG mills were converted to SAG for improved stability and increased throughput. This imposes a huge penalty in steel grinding media consumption. The LKAB iron ore operations in Sweden process highgrade magnetite through fully-autogenous milling lines to a final product P80 of about 45µm. The outcomes of P9O AMIRA research surveys, covering a wide range of mill fillings and throughputs and with different feed blends, are presented. Insights are provided on operational strategies, opportunities, the influence of feed size control and balancing the blend of competent gangue and softer magnetite. Areas of importance in the successful operation and control of energy-efficient autogenous circuits are highlighted.

"Abstract - The Little Falls member of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation is situated in the northern part of the Brunswick Belt of the Bathurst Mining Camp and has been interpreted as the distal equivalent of proximal tuffaceous rocks that host the stratiform Brunswick No. 12 and No. 6 Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits. It comprises fine-grained, greenish-gray tuffaceous sandstone in the lower part, and coarse-grained, crystal-rich tuffaceous sandstone in the upper part. Petrographic evidence suggests that these rocks have a turbiditic origin. The Little Falls member is underlain by the Vallée Lourdes member, mainly composed of relatively shallow-water calcareous rocks, and is conformably overlain by Mn-rich sedimentary rocks, mainly red argillites that host the Tetagouche Falls Mn-(Fe) deposit. All these rocks are considered to belong to the Nepisiguit Falls Formation, part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Whole-rock geochemical data from the fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone and coarse-grained tuffaceous sandstone indicate that the two units of the Little Falls member are distinct. Zr and TiO2 contents, and total rare earth element (REE) values are higher in the coarse-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.040, average SREE = 247 ppm, n = 6) than in the fine-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.048, average SREE = 158 ppm, n = 17), which can be attributed to the variation in crystal content between the two units. Both units are HREE-enriched and have elevated La/Yb relative to the typical Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Overall, the geochemical data combined with evidence from the bounding units suggest that the Little Falls member was deposited in relatively shallow water, possibly in a near-arc environment. The relationship of volcanic facies within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and the geochemistry of these facies indicate strongly that fine grained, reworked tuffaceous rocks, regardless of whether they are the distal equivalents of proximal tuffaceous rocks, are not associated with the major ore-bearing horizons of the Bathurst Mining Camp. "During the summer of 1968, the author was employed in the Research Department of Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited, Hamilton, Ontario. Over the years, Dofasco has been conducting a program for developing more efficient control of its basic oxygen steelmaking process. The author was thus able to obtain a variety of viewpoints from both research engineers and furnace operators. He also had access to extensive literature dealing with BOF control schemes underway at other major steel producers. This paper describes the present state of developments in BOF steelmaking control.The necessity for efficient BOF control is pointed out. To appreciate the variables to be controlled, a brief outline of process fundamentals is included. Technical aspects of present methods of practical control are examined in detail; the relative merits of dynamic over static control models are emphasized. Finally, it is shown how an effective dymic-optimizing control scheme serves as the basis for closed-loop computer control of the process."

The underground research presented in this paper was carried out in the two Polish copper mines: Rudna and Polkowice-Sieroszowice. The aim of the research was to determine stress field parameters. The measurement method and measuring positions are described as well as the measuring technique adapted to the geological and mining conditions of the Rudna mine and the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine. The identified values and directions of principal stresses and horizontal stresses and their importance for optimization of mining operation and safety improvement are discussed.

Based on underground observations made in .the coal mines of the Dominion Coal Company Ltd., this paper deals with the stress phenomena in the approach roads and headways and in the gob areas associated with the longwall method of total extraction. The deformation of roadways during development and the deformation of roadways during the total extraction period is delineated and presented in graphical form .. Conclusions are made as to the feasibility of the introduction of the retreat method of longwall extraction in one of the colhenes. The importance of future studies are enumerated, especially. those pertaining to the determination .of the opti.m.um sizes of protective pillars and to increasing the efficiency of the current methods of artificial roadway support.

"Theoretical notions of mass transfer processes in cascade separation of bulk materials have not been adequately developed as yet (Barsky M.D. 1980). In this paper we have derived linear difference equation of the second order for a cascade with initial feeding top any stage proceeding from mass exchange regularities. The solution of these equations has allowed us to determine quantitative dependences of the material distribution over the cascade stages, which serve the basis of the method of predictive estimate of the process results. We have also examined the model of the material distribution coefficient formation at individual cascade stages.We have checked the adequacy of this model to experimental data. It is noteworthy that the obtained theoretical results are phenomenological, i.e. they can be applied to the processes of separation of different physical nature, e.g. of isotopes, liquid media, gases, etc.INTRODUCTIONRecently, the processes of cascade separation of bulk materials have found broad application in various industries. They ensure a high separation efficiency and high-quality composition of final products. Although specialized literature gives serious attention to cascade processes [1], their theory is not sufficiently developed yet. To achieve optimal organization of this process, we examine mass transfer in a cascade gravitational classifier with stages of identical design."

"Abstract - Diamond-drill hole DDH-B357, located 1.5 km north of the Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb- Cu-Ag volcanic-sediment-hosted massive sulfide (VSHMS) deposit, intersects three exhalative horizons within variably altered felsic volcanic rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls and Flat Landing Brook formations. These three petrographically indistinguishable iron formation intervals (Fe2O3T = 21.4 wt.%) likely represent cogenetic hydrothermal sedimentary units because they display a common geochemical signature: Fe2O3T = 42.9 ± 10.5 wt.%, MnO = 5.4 ± 3.1 wt.%, elevated base metal values (Zn+Pb = 1999 ± 1091 ppm), strong enrichment in additional exhalative components (CaO = 5.3 ± 3.9 wt.%; P2O5 = 1.43 ± 1.00 wt.%), oxidized signature (Fe/Mn = 10 ± 6), as well as a common immobile element signature (Zr/TiO2 = 0.025 ± 0.007) representative of a pelagic source. The calc-alkaline to transitional host volcanic rocks can be discriminated by Zr/TiO2, and to a lesser extent by Th/Nb: Nepisiguit Falls Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.053 ± 0.004, Th/Nb = 1.08 ± 0.37; Flat Landing Brook Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.107 ± 0.043, Th/Nb = 0.86 ± 0.17. A symmetrical repetition of the footwall-iron formation-hanging wall stratigraphic sequence is observed in DDH-B357, with distinct felsic volcanic rock domains separated by the three iron formations. This is best explained by parasitic F2 folds on the west flank of the south-plunging Brunswick antiform, similar to the fold closures known to host massive sulfide accumulations in the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 mines. Iron formation geochemistry and felsic volcanic rock chemostratigraphy from drill core sampling can provide an effective mineral exploration tool for the structurally complex rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Une répétition symétrique de la séquence stratigraphique Mur-Formation de Fer-Toit a été observée dans le forage DDH-B357, avec des domaines distincts constitués de roches volcaniques felsiques séparés par les trois formations de fer. La meilleure explication est que le flanc ouest de l’anticlinal Brunswick à plongée sud est affecté par des plis parasites F2, similaires aux zones de charnière contenant les sulfures massifs des mines Brunswick No. 6 et No. 12. Base metal processing operations often treat process tailings and acid mine drainage using a high density sludge (HDS) water treatment process. Lime is used in this process, which reacts with existing sulfates to form gypsum. When a recycle stream is incorporated in the process, gypsum levels in recirculating water may build up and cause high levels of gypsum supersaturation. Precipitation of gypsum from the supersaturated process water causes many problems. It is speculated that gypsum may precipitate on sulfide minerals and silica gangues in the flotation circuit, resulting in decreased selectivity and recovery. An understanding of the determinants and nature of precipitation may provide solutions to mitigate the formation of precipitates and improve flotation performance. This study showed that both sphalerite and silica exhibited gypsum- or calcium carbonate-like behavior in the respective supersaturated solutions, indicative of a coating of calcium species on the mineral particle surfaces. The addition of copper sulfate and/or potassium xanthate had little effect on the precipitation of gypsum or calcium carbonate on the mineral particles. Sodium carbonate is encouraging as a method to minimize calcium species interactions on sphalerite/silica surfaces.

For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the history of the western Provinces-Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta-as regards our natural resources, a few words of explanation may be in order before taking up the consideration of the Mines Act of 1930. In 1867, The British North America Act was passed by the Imperial Parliament. That Act, which is our constitution, created a union between the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Upper and Lower Canada (now known as Ontario and Quebec respectively) under the name of the Dominion of Canada. Provision was made therein for embracing other parts of Canada from time to time. That portion of Canada which today comprises the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta and the lands to the north of them, was then known as Ruperts Land and the North West Territory. In the year 1670, King Charles II had granted by Letters Patent to Prince Rupert and his associates, known as ?The Governor & Company of Gentlemen Adventurers of England, Trading into Hudson's Bay?, commonly known as the Hudson's Bay Company, the lands and territories therein described, being roughly all the lands adjacent to and west of Hudson's bay; also the gold and silver to be found or discovered therein and other rights as more fully described in said Letters Patent. The land so granted was called 'Ruperts Land'.

"I WOULD LIKE TO SAY how honoured I am that I have been invited to participate in this panel discussion. I have taken the liberty of narrowing my topic somewhat so that instead of speaking on the Sociology of Professions as a whole I will speak on one aspect of it, that is, on Manpower Problems in the Minerals industry of Canada, with some reference to a new social role for the professionals engaged in this industry. This probably means that I will be encroaching on areas covered or to be covered by other speakers, but I hope that when I do so I will do so from a slightly different vantage point. That is, from a sociological perspective rather than from a historical, industrial, business or professional perspective. I plan to divide my discussion into three areas, namely: (i) problems of ownership and control; (ii) environmental problems; and (iii) manpower and recruitment problems. I do not plan nor am I able to provide clear-cut solutions to the various problems I raise under these three headings. Rather, I hope that my discussion of the problems may form the basis for an extended discussion here and elsewhere. Because of the limitations of time, I will only briefly discuss the first two problem areas noted above – (i) ownership and control and (ii) environmental problems - and I plan to concentrate on the manpower issue."

Coal is an important fuel for energy generation, and since there are no adequate alternatives it will also be for the next decades. The deep lying hard coal is important in particular because of its high energy content. Automation of underground mining has led to major improvements in productivity and safety. A fully mechanized longwall shearer workface has already reached a high degree of automation and provides a high productivity for example utilizing the memory cut. Current researches and developments in longwall mining are focused on extending this method by adaptive cutting drum height adjustment. The so-called horizon control is often based on memory cut methods. Horizon control in this way requires information of the environment, which can be provided by models (seam model, cut model) and coal interface detection (CID). Available CID systems only provide an optimal output under specific conditions. The authors propose the shield-data-based horizon control (SDHC) system as an alternative approach. SDHC does not require information from a CID system or an environmental model. All necessary information is provided by roof supports, shearer and process monitoring. The SDHC system was tested in simulation under different seam conditions and yielded promising results which will be presented in this paper. In cooperation with the German mining company RAG the SDHC has already reached an experimental stage. A test assembly was built up at the surface and the SDHC system was implemented on real mining equipment. To make the test scenario as realistic as possible, the SDHC system was only connected to the monitoring system, not to the simulation model. The aim of these tests was to establish the cooperation between all subsystems, find appropriate controller parameters, locate and address safety critical aspects and finally to achieve an automatic cutting drum height adjustment. An introduction of SDHC for shearer guidance is given in this paper. The experimental tests are described and the control results of the realized SDHC system on the test assembly are shown.

The swift decline of coal during the period of unprecedented expansion in the Canadian economy is a phenomenon deserving careful examination, because the underlying forces contributing to this decline may have broader implications in our national economy. At the present level of technology, coal is more difficult to process, transport and utilize than liquid and gaseous fuels. Fundamentally, it is a matter of limitation in technique. Because coal is a vast store-house of energy in Canada, the reduction of these limitations is in the long-term national interest.

Modification of the blasting process considers that any increase in the energy consumption generates greater benefits if done in the later stages (associated with a larger decrease in energy consumption). Therefore, although the blasting cost is doubled, generating a greater proportion of fines in addition to a weaker ore (because with greater loads and appropriate distribution of explosives a greater number of internal cracks is generated), the reduction of the unit cost that occurs in the grinding stages (SAG and ball mills) generates a positive balance in the overall size reduction process. Codelco Chile, Division Andina, has developed an extensive experimental plan to evaluate the concept of blasting modification applying greater energy. This was implemented in two stages, each including a specific mine sector: La Union and Don Luis. This paper reviews the experience of implementing such blasting modifications at the La Union mine and its impact on the design concepts and the operation of the SAG mill plant

Real time analysis of ore quality between the mine and mill provides major benefits to copper mining and processing operations. Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) is a proven technique that has been successfully applied for real time conveyed flow multi-elemental measurement. The advantage of PGNAA is that it measures through the full conveyed cross section continuously and provides representative element measurement without the need to constantly sample coarse (primary crushed) conveyed flows. High specification PGNAA analyzers enable accurate measurement over time increments as short as thirty seconds. Elements such as copper can be measured to a precision of 0.02% copper which is sufficient for high confidence in decisions for bulk flow diversion. Increments of eight tonnes are being diverted through a bulk ore sorting application to remove batches of waste from mill feed as well as divert material to different stockpiles based on ore quality. Longer measurement increments of two to five minutes are suitable for blending control of ores to reduce feed quality variability and to control average ore quality within a target range. Feed blends can be adjusted as frequently as required but typically multiple measurement increments are composited to produce a rolling average ore quality. The paper details two case studies where analyzers have been successfully used to measure conveyed flows for blending and bulk diversion applications. The real time measurements of ore composition are also used for ore reconciliation, in metal accounting and providing process operators with advance warning of ore quality changes that may affect grinding performance and cause process upsets. Real time ore quality measurement has proven beneficial in improving copper processing performance through better utilising plant capacity in a leaching operation, optimising ore feed quality, and reducing unnecessary processing of waste. INTRODUCTION Representative real time elemental analysis of conveyed ore quality using fully penetrative technologies has been available to the minerals industry since the 1990s. The Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technique was developed into a conveyed material analyser and soon adopted by the cement and coal industries which recognised the benefits in real time quality management. These commodities were ideally suited to this measurement technique as operations generally involved conveying bulk material prior to processing. Measured quality was used to divert material to different destinations or used to control blending for improved quality consistency. Uptake in the minerals industry, however, has been slow until the last ten years, and particularly until the mid-2010s.

"THE last two years have been years of recession or, perhaps, years of marking time, depending upon whether the observer is a pessimist or an optimist. There has been a slackening in the industrial tempo that has been reflected in many ways in the national economy. As one of the chief barometers of economic health, the consumption and supply of energy reflect this slowing up.These same two years have also seen significant changes in the relation between the sources of energy. In periods of declining demand, it has happened in the past that coal, as the basic or residual source of energy, has shown the effects to a greater extent than the other energies. In these two years, however, in addition to this usual effect, there has been the acceleration in the Joss of market to diesels in the railway consumption category and the continuing decline in domestic consumption. The story of these years is presented in the statistical tables that form the foundation of this paper. Statistics, particularly in the form of tables, are rather dry and are sometimes difficult to follow but the overall developments are illustrated by graphs which present a more striking picture."
