The Tetreault mine, operated by the British Metal Corporation (Canada), Limited, holds a unique position in Canadian mining, being the only steady producer of zinc in Canada east of the Rocky mountains. Its importance in Canadian zinc production may be gauged with some accuracy, since, in 1927, it was responsible for over 13 per cent of the zinc output of the Dominion. In addition, it also made valuable contributions to the production of lead, silver, and gold. Location: Situated in the foothills of the Laurentian mountains, 600 feet above sea level, 20 miles from the St. Lawrence river, and 52 miles due west from the city of Quebec, the property is in the township of Montauban, county Portneuf, Province of Quebec, as shown in Figure I. The municipality of Montauban, immediately adjoining the mine, has a permanent population of 700 people and is six miles by road from Notre Dame station on the main line of the C.N. Rys. between Montreal and Chicoutimi-Notre Dame being n6 miles by rail from Montreal. Connection by 19 miles of dirt-and-gravel road with the Provincial highways' system of Quebec Province, the city of Quebec, which is distant 78 miles, can be reached by automobile in less than three hours, while the distance to Montreal by road is 16o miles .

"The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is temporally and spatially related to the emplacement of a late Cretaceous granodiorite-tonalite stock in southeastern British Columbia and contains an estimated 49 million tonnes grading O.I9% MoS2- No metal zonation patterns are apparent, with the exception of peripheral tungsten skarn, and exploration was guided largely by geological interpretation. It is typical of the granodiorite, or fluorine-poor type of molybdenum deposit. Molybdenite is contained within a quartz-feldspar vein stockwork and coeval dissemination in igneous (and less commonly metasedimentary) hosts. In general, molybdenite is strongly associated with alkali feldspars, but in detail it is intimately associated with incipient muscovite replacement of albite and K-feldspar; veins that lack feldspars are also typically barren of molybdenite. These textures suggest that fe/dspathic alteration (and precipitation in veins) was an important precursor to mineralization, and the occurrence of similar textures elsewhere (e.g. Henderson) suggest that early feldspathic alteration is important to the genesis of molybdenum deposits in general. Molybdenite deposition at Trout Lake was preceded by contact metamorphism, skarn and potassic alteration, and was overprinted by muscovite-ankerite (phyllic) alteration. Only moderate temperature changes are recorded by the metamorphic and alteration mineral assemblages (350°C to 450°C}; however, with time, fluids became increasingly more acidic and enriched in C02- In light of the intimate molybdenitemuscovite intergrowths, the decrease of pH probably exerted a major control on mineralization.IntroductionGranite-hosted molybdenum deposits can be classified in terms of the composition of the related intrusion, e.g., the granodiorite and granite types of Mutschler et a!. (1981), or the calc-alkaline, alkali-calcic, and alkalic types of Westra and Keith (1981). They have also been classified on the basis of their fluorine contents (Theodore and Menzie, 1984) with the fluorine-rich and -poor varieties roughly corresponding to granite- and granodiorite-type deposits, respectively. For economic reasons, most exploration and research has concentrated on the high-grade/large tonnage granite-type of deposit, exemplified by Climax. F1uorine-poor, granodiorite-type deposits are, however, the most common type in Canada and have been mined in the past (e.g., Endako). In this paper, the authors summarize the research that has been carried out on the fluorinepoor Trout Lake deposit (Boyle and Leitch, 1983; Linnen, 1985; Linnen and Williams-Jones, 1987; 1990) and use what has been learned to develop guidelines for the future exploration of fluorinepoor, granodiorite-type molybdenum deposits."

Weighted moving-average contour maps have been constructed for molybdenum, copper and zinc using 7850 stream-sediment samples from 5430 square miles (14,063 sq. kms) of south-central British Columbia. Regional trends for molybdenum and zinc are northeast, north and northwest and those for copper are north and northwest. These trends are interrupted by zones markedly low in metals . The metal-rich trends cross rocks of different lithology and age and thus appear to be structurally controlled. The northeast trend may have exerted control on metal distribution at two different times.

"A large-scale expansion to Pacific Coast Bulk Terminals Ltd. has now been completed and placed in operation. The original plant, built approximately eight years ago, consists of the direct rail-car to ship transfer of bulk commodities. The extension includes additional rail-car unloading, a transfer house system for directing commodities to storage or ship, major storage and reclaim facilities, a second shiploader and a second deep-sea berth. In addition to the facilities for overseas shipments, a wood-chip loader and a barge berth have been installed for domestic shipments of wood chips and, occasionally, for other local commodities. The design considerations imposed by the nature of the products to be handled are covered in this paper."

"IntroductionSNOW LAKE is situated in northern Manitoba at latitude 54° 55 and longitude 100°, 400 miles northwesterly of Winnipeg, 80 miles northeast of The Pas, 80 miles east of Flin Flon. A 38-mile road from Wekusko, on the Hudson's Bay railway, serves the community.The mine is located in and close to the southern edge of the Precambrian Shield in typical low-relief muskeg and lake country.The Howe Sound Exploration Company, Limited optioned the property from Nor Acme Gold Mines, Limited, after preliminary diamond drilling had outlined two orebodies of low-grade arsenical gold ore.Following the examination and study of geological data and of 50,000 feet of diamond-drill core, and metallurgical tests made during 1942 to 1945, a decision was made to develop the mine and build a 2 ,000-ton mill concurrently. This development has been described by G. C. Lipsey in a paper entitled The Development of a Mining Operation from Diamond-Drill Data which was published in the August. 1952, issue of Mining Engineering.Geological Features of the OrebodiesThe orebodies at Snow Lake occur in volcanic rocks of acid to basic composition and, to a lesser extent, in intrusive hornblendite. The hornblendite is a massive, uniform, .coarse-textured rock except in the immediate vicinity of the ore zone, where it becomes sheared and carbonatized. The acid volcanics have been converted to quartz-garnet-biotite gneiss, and the basic volcanics to amphibolite gneiss. Orebodies have been formed by the replacement of all three rock types."

"The oxidation of Quebracho was evaluated by acid-butanol assay, which indicates depolymerization of Quebracho. Anthocyanidin, an oxidation product of Quebracho, is stable at 95?C for up to 2 h. The ionization, complexation, and oxidation properties of Quebracho were discussed. Complexation of metal-Quebracho occurs at ambient temperature. The formation of complex precipitates is influenced by the acidity of the solution. Temperature is another important parameter that influences the oxidation and the complexation of Quebracho. Quebracho-ferric complex precipitate forms at 90?C, 0.1 mol/L H2SO4. The formation of Quebracho-metal complex in the leach solution is a possible reason for the consumption of Quebracho. Quebracho molecules adsorption on the mineral surface is reduced by consumption of Quebracho, resulting in poor sulfur dispersing effect in the leaching process. INTRODUCTIONQuebracho is used as a sulfur dispersing agent (SDA) in the pressure leaching of zinc concentrate as stated in U.S. Patent No. 3,867,268 (1975). It prevents the zinc sulfide particles from being coated with molten sulfur, thus preventing the inhibition of the zinc leaching reaction. Recently, the sulfur dispersing effect of Quebracho was investigated in the oxygen pressure leaching of nickel concentrate. The oxygen pressure leaching of pentlandite can be represented by reactions 1-3."

Introduction While pilot-mill operations were being carried on at Flin Flon, as described by R. E. Phelan (1), a detailed topographic map was being made of the area in the vicinity of the ore-body for later use in laying out plans for the final plant. The area covered by this survey was 6,600 feet by 6,600 feet, with contours on 2-foot intervals. As mentioned by Mr. Phelan, it was definitely decided at the end of November, 1927, to take up the option on the Flin Flon property and to proceed immediately with the plans for construction of a metallurgical plant at Flin Flon to treat 3,000 tons of ore per day, and of a hydro-electric power plant at Island Falls, Saskatchewan, to supply power for the future operations at Flin Flon. Railway Built From The Pas to Flin Flon Just as soon as the decision was made to go ahead with the construction work and opening-up of the property, it was of course essential to give immediate attention to the building of a railway to the mine. Many years previously, a preliminary survey had been made for a railway to branch off the Hudson Bay railway at a point 4.7 miles northeast of The Pas, and, during certain negotiations in 1925, the Provincial Government of Manitoba had agreed to guarantee the railway bonds necessary to finance the building of the line, so that it was possible to organize for this work immediately. A contract was let by the newly organized Manitoba Northern Railway Company to the Dominion Construction Company, Ltd., and Tomlinson, for the building of the railway to the mine, a distance of approximately 87 miles (see Figure 1). The Manitoba Northern railway is a subsidiary to the Canadian National railway, and all engineering and supervision of the contractors was done by the Canadian National engineers. Actual construction work was started in January, 1928. The first 52 miles of the railway from The Pas to Cranberry Portage is over fairly level, although slightly rolling, country, and a considerable portion of the route is over muskeg area. Rails were laid on top of the frozen muskegs. Gravel deposits were opened-up along the line and, before warm weather; sufficient ballast .was distributed in the muskeg areas to prevent thawing under the track, and thus give the necessary support to allow uninterrupted transportation over the line.

Orovalle Minerals S. L. operates a copper/gold mine in the Asturias region of northern Spain, with the operation dating back to December 1997. The feed to the El Valle mill, consisting of oxide/sulphide (skarn) mineralization, is highly variable, even on a shift by shift basis and presents challenges to the mill operating staff on a daily basis. The mineralogical characteristics of the ore are quite complex with copper present as native copper and sulphides as well as copper minerals with deleterious elements. Gold is present as native gold and electrum. The mill circuit includes SAG/ball mill grinding, gravity recovery of native copper and gold, flotation of copper concentrate, carbon-in-leach gold recovery and SO2/air cyanide destruction. The paper will provide a description of the different unit operations and present operating data of the mill operation.

According to the principle of similarity, the physical and chemical configurations of a system can be defined by ratios of magnitudes within the system and do not de-pend on the size or nature of units of measurement. In the present work, the similarity principle was utilized in evaluating the reducibility of various iron ores in a rotary batch furnace under optimum operating conditions. It was then used successfully to extrapolate the results, first to the operation of a 20-ft. pilot-plant kiln and then to an industrial-size 80-ft. kiln. By means of this systematic analysis of kiln operation, it was possible to increase the production capacity of the kiln considerably. T HE kilns used by the Strategic-Udy process for the partial reduction of iron ores are, in most aspects, similar to conventional calcining kilns. The behavior of gold in hydrothermal systems is evaluated as a function of pH and oxygen and sulphur activities at temperatures to 250°C. Under conditions of stability of pyrite and argillic alteration as emblages, gold will be transported as bisulphide complexes. In systems containing significant amounts of arsenic, thioarsenide complexes may be important. Oxidation, dilution and reduction in sulphur activity would cause gold deposition from saturated solutions under these conditions. Gold chloride complexes will predominate under oxidized conditions where hematite or other oxides are stable and depo ition would result from increase in pH and/or reduction . Absorption and coprecipitation are po sible mechanisms of deposition for gold in certain low grade depo it . Low concentrations of gold in the transporting solution combined with the ignificant solubility of gold as bisulphide complexes, sugge t hydrothermal solutions rarely may be saturated with gold and coprecipitation with sulphides may be an important initial depositional process. Recrystallization of the sulphides in the presence of the hydrothermal solution would be re ponsible for release of gold to more table ite . The Snow Lake-Wekusko Lake region of northern Manitoba conta ins numerous lode gold occurrences, including the largest gold deposit in the Churchill Prov ince, the Nor Acme mine. The Aphebian volcanic and sedimentary rocks of this region are comprised of submarine volcanic strata, overlain by turbidites, both of the Amisk Group, and fluvi atile sedimenta ry strata and bimodally composed subaerial volcanic rocks of the overlying Missi Group. Gold occurs as: 1) accessory gold in volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, 2) lode gold in shear zones related to sy n- to post-FI thrust fa ults, and 3) lode-gold associated with post-F2 fault . An alteration a emblage of biotite, al bite and calc ite is associated with both groups of lode-gold deposits, and has been superimposed on the regionall y-developed metamorphic assemblages. AJthough these deposi ts are spatial ly related to britt le-ductile faul ts of different initial ages, they appear to have all fo rmed after the major period of reg ional fo lding and metamorphism, and thus may be penecontemporaneous. The alteration is different from the sericite-ankerite-quartz assemblage that is typically associated with gold deposits in Superio r Prov ince. Deposits in thi s area of Churchill Prov ince may have formed either at a higher temperature or a deeper structu ra l level than tho e in Superior Prov ince.

Permanent mould casting may be regarded as a near net shape manufacturing process where simple to very complex shaped engineering components are fabricated with high degree of precision in a metallic mould, In this group, High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC), have attracted more attention because of its production rate, where both liquid and semisolid metals (SSM) can be cast with high degree of precision and versatility. The SEED process, Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device, the new process for semi solid metals slurry production route, consists of two steps: The initial step involves extracting specified amount of heat from the molten metal to generate liquid-solid slurry, i.e, mushy structure, followed by drainage of remaining liquid to produce a compact free standing feedstock for rheocasting operation. In this paper, microstructural evolution during the process and some initial casting results of automotive components an also reported.

In 1958, the Iron Ore Company of Canada decided to proceed with the Carol Project. The ore deposits in the area are part of the highly metamorphosed southern zone of the Labrador Trough. They lie along the shore of W a bush lake, in the western part of Newfoundland-Labrador, 190 miles north of Sept-Iles. The project is designed to mine, by open-pit methods, 17,200,000 long tons of crude ore, grading 37 per cent iron, per year. This ore will be beneficiated to produce 7,000,000 long tons of concentrate, grading 66 per cent iron, of which 5,500,000 long tons will be pelletized. Production is scheduled to commence this summer. Initially, ore will be taken from 45-foot benches in the Smallwood mine, using jet-piercing production drills and large-scale blasting with "slurry" explosives. Four 13-yard electric shovels will muck the broken ore into 100-ton trailer trucks. The trailers will be hauled to two 2,000-ton loading pockets, which feed the ore into 100-ton railcars. In 1976, Rio Algom Limited began the expansion of uranium production facilities at Elliot Lake. Quirke Mine was the only property in operation at the time, and plans were made to expand its milling capacity from 4,500 to 7,000 tons of ore per day. Following this expansion, other properties in the area will be reactivated to fulfill long-term contracts for uranium. As part of the expansion program, it was decided that in view of the escalating cost and impending shortage of energy, heat reclaim and conservation would be employed wherever practicable. In general terms, heat reclaim applications fall into three main classifications: ventilation, utility and process. Two of the ventilation applications and one process application will be described in some detail. Several other systems will be presented briefly as a matter of general interest. Some future possibilities will also be mentioned, together with their potential for economical heat recovery.

"THE OBJECT of these notes is to initiate a discussion among the members of our Institution on the connotation of the term 'ore', and to arrive, if possible, at an acceptable definition of the term in the light of its current use by our leading mining engineers, metallurgists, •and geologists.The majority of •authors of well-known modern text-books on subjects dealing with mineral deposits define 'ore' in words which convey the meaning that it is an aggregate of minerals from which one or more metals can, under favourable conditions, be extracted profitably.Many eminent members of the Institution, and of mining and metallurgical institutions in other countries, consider that the term should not be restricted to metalliferous mineral •deposits but can also be applied correctly to certain non-metallic deposits. They believe that the growth, during the twentieth century, in the industrial importance of non-metallic minerals, and the progress made in the mining and the milling of deposits containing such minerals by methods similar to those used for metalliferous mineral deposits, no longer justify the academic restriction of the term to deposits worked for their metal content only."

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. Le présent article définit une procédure d’essai en laboratoire qui utilise des études cinétiques de flottation pour vérifier l’effet de doses normales à extrêmes de produits chimiques antitartre et anti-poussière (5 à 100 g/t). Development of the Canadian North, a subject of growing national interest, must in part await the development of better forms of trans-port. The estimated 500,000 square miles of muskeg terrain in the north combined with the" scarcity of roads make essential the early development of special purpose muskeg vehicles. Good progress has been made in the last eleven years in classifying muskeg and some progress has been made in determining its mechanical properties. Limited travel is now possible through the use of special purpose tracked vehicles which have been built without adequate design data. A program to provide data which can be used to optimize muskeg vehicle designs began in 1957. The results of the second phase of this pro-gram are presented in this report. It is shown that vehicle performance in muskeg is directly related to the mechanical properties of the muskeg. Further, it is shown that good de-sign practice for tracked vehicles expected to operate in snow, sand, soft clays and loams is also good practice for muskeg vehicles. All indications are that muskeg mechanics is properly a part of conventional soil mechanics.

ABSTRACT The Goldex mining and milling complex is operated by Agnico-Eagle and is located in the Abitibi greenstone region of northwestern Quebec, Canada. Commercial production started in 2008. Average gold recovery is 93.5% with approximately 68% of gold recovery coming from the gravity circuit. During the first three years of production, three gravity audits were carried out to optimize performance of the gravity circuit. This paper presents results of the audits and the development of a model linking gravity and overall gold recovery, and outlines improvements made to increase gravity performance and reduce operating costs.

The utilization of natural deposits of salt is one of the oldest industries in Alberta. In 1820, Sir James Richardson visited Salt river, and in the same year D. W. Harmon states chat "clown Slave river, there are several places, where almost any quantity of excellent dean white salt may be taken, with as much ease as sand along the seashore. From these places the greater part of the northwest is supplied with this valuable article". This reference is to the salt chat occurs around springs on Salt river at the northern boundary of the Province. This and other occurrences will be described later in this paper. It is not on account of the development of salt and gypsum in Alberta chat this paper has been prepared, but rather to draw attention to the widespread distribution of salt-bearing and gypsum-bearing rocks, and to the stratigraphic importance of these rocks . The origin of the deposits of salt, gypsum, anhydrite, and dolomite is discussed, and the economic significance of these minerals is considered. There is no salt production reported from Alberta in 1928.
