Rock burst is one of the biggest challenges to ground control in the mining industry. With increasing mining depth and mining scale, there are more and more industry requirements on yielding rock support. Since 2008, Jennmar has been conducting large scale research and development works to develop a technically reliable and cost effective yielding rock bolt. This paper introduces a new yielding rock support - Yield-Lok bolt. The bolt is characterized by the designed yielding ability to produce 150 ~ 250 mm of deflection at 8 ~ 10 metric tons (Mt) loads for every 16.4kJ energy input. Its performance characteristics are consistent through multiple and varying amplitude of impacts. In this paper, the design criteria of the bolt and the principle of performance are described, the dynamic testing results are discussed; and the features and application of the bolt are presented.

"Quebec Cartier Mining Company is currently mining a low-grade iron ore deposit in northeastern Quebec. The Company is producing some 8,000,000 dry gross tons of concentrates per year, grading about 66 per cent iron. The pit, which is located on the keel or hinge line of a fold, will eventually be about 1,000 feet deep with a surface area of 8,000 by 2,600 feet. The most significant structural discontinuities in the mine are the natural bedding planes and secondary perpendicular joints. The exposed walls are subjected to a sub-Arctic climate and heavy blasting occurs approximately six times a month.QCM utilizes design and operating techniques to control rock fall. Steps are also being taken to analyze the ultimate over-all pit slope stability."

Iron ore, when subjected to reducing gases at a temperature suitable for reduction of the oxide but not high enough to melt the ore or metal formed, is converted into metallic iron. The product, being the original piece of iron oxide minus its oxygen, is sponge-like in appearance when viewed under a magnifying glass, and hence is called 'sponge iron. Sponge iron was probably the form in which some of the first iron was recovered from the ores. As early as the eighth century the Catlan forge developed into a low shaft furnace known as the high bloomary, in which iron was produced in the form of a pasty mass. These furnaces were increased in height, and with increased temperatures came the production of liquid cast-iron, at first undesirable because of lack of knowledge of methods for working it. In 1340 the first true blast-furnace was built iri Belgium. Some castings were made, but the greater part of the iron was converted into wroughtiron blooms by a crude puddling process. Charcoal was the universal fuel until the latter part of the seventeenth century, when coke was first used in England. Larger scale developments of methods of refining pig-iron followed. In I 885 Bessemer built his first converter in England, and within a few years the Siemen' s regenerative open-hearth furnace was developed, also in England, to produce steel. Then followed the enormous expansion in the metallurgy of iron. The idea of a direct process for the production of iron and steel has persisted during all of this time.

The Teniente Converter (wet charge type) was commissioned in august 1995 and was designed to smelt 744 tpd (metric tons per day) of dry copper concentrates. Its products are white metal (73% Cu) that is sent to the Peirce Smith converters, slag that is cleaned in Reverberatory Furnaces and the process gases that are sent to the Sulfuric Acid Plant. Since its start up, the Teniente Converter smelting capacity was increased 1.6 times, from 800 tpd to 1,280 tpd using 33% oxygen-enriched air, and reaching an operative availability of 97%. By the other hand its campaigns have reached a record duration of 530 days without hot patching tuyeres and a partial refractory lining repair in the last four campaigns. This paper describes the most relevant improvements, as well as the strategies that had been used to reach these achievements.

"A trondhjemite stock intrudes a volcanic sequence that has massive sulphide lenses and that is metamorphosed to the greenschist facies at Gutcher Lake, 25 km north of Wawa, Ontario. The stock is 4 km2 in plan and is partly enveloped by an aureole of chlorite-epidote-amphibolehornfels up to 1 km wide. Within this contact aureole, biotite is partly pseudomorphosed by chlorite;epidote and hornblende are mottled by chlorite, calcite, plus quartz; albite has 0% An to 8% An; and hornblende porphyroblasts have actinolite rims. The stock has chlorite pseudomorphous after biotite; and feldspar is mottled by white mica plus calcite and has a clear rim of albite. Fractures filled with quartz, calcite, ankerite, chlorite, white mica, pyrite, and native gold cross-cut the stock and its hornfels aureole. These gold-bearing veins are enveloped by foliated rocks with quartz, calcite, white mica, and chlorite that grade outward from the veins into trondhjemite or hornfels.The stock, emplaced into a submarine volcanic series, emanated heat that caused seawater to convect and formed a contact aureole of hornblende hornfels. The stock eventually intruded its aureole and this culminated with regional metamorphism to the greenschist facies. Regional metamorphism hydrated the stock and its hornfels aureole. Native gold precipitated with quartz along fractures from metamorphic flu ids in response to cooling and wallrock hydration. exploration for this type of gold deposits should focus around felsic intrusions that have albite and that have contact aureoles retrograded by regional metamorphism."

This paper describes the results of a laboratory study on the upgrading of Algoma siderite by the amine flotation of silica and silicate gangue. The experiments indicate that a virtually complete removal of silica is possible in a rougher flotation con-ducted in tap water at natural pH, without prior desliming of the ore. Grinding considerably finer than the apparent liberation size is essential for maximum silica rejection. A cationic collector, Aeromine 3037, gave best results when used in combination with a modifier. Of the several modifiers tested, a Dutch potato dextrin, Dextrin 4356, was found to be the most effective. Both iron recovery and the grade of the final iron product are enhanced by floating the pyrite contained in the ore prior to the amine flotation of the silica, and by scalping the magnetics from the silica concentrate. "Concurrent with the continuing demise of many Canadian mining towns is the rise of a new method of providing remote mine sites with a workforce. This is the Long Distance Commute (LDC) which uses commuter labour and requires no permanent settlements to support the mine operation. It provides a flexible and cost effective method of operation to the industry and relieves both governments and industry of the expense of building and maintaining mining towns. However, little attention has been paid to the effect on workers or their families of the LDC work schedule whereby workers spend a fixed number of days at the site followed by a fixed number of days at home. Off-shore oil rig experience would indicate that negative social impacts may be expected. Research leading to an understanding of the problems involved seems to be indicated. One innovative suggestion has been to use already established but dying mining towns as workforce pick-up points for new LDC operations further north.BackgroundUntil recently, mine towns were considered as a necessary component of mine development. This was a natural symbiosis resulting from the need to provide workforce accommodation close to isolated mine sites. The early mine communities in Canada were often just a huddle of shacks around a head frame. Gradually mining companies began to provide housing which varied from basic duplexes and quads in grid pattern layout to professionally planned and designed towns, either model company towns or the more recent suburbs-in-the-bush, the so-called ""instant towns"" of the postWorld War II era of resource development. The improvement in accommodation reflected the need to attract a stable workforce as mine operations became more sophisticated. City amenities were expected and offered in these mine towns as a way of encouraging a permanent community of mining families. Indeed in towns like Manitouwdage, Schefferville, and others, it was not unusual to find a significant percentage of two- and three-generation families apparently providing the permanent mining communities so desired by mine operators."

"This paper describes the development of an automated, 70-ton capacity, underground electric trolley truck at Inco Ltd. The purpose of the project is to provide a high capacity and high productivity haulage system to suit continuous loader applications in existing mining horizons where conveyor belt application is not immediately practical. IntroductionWith the start o f a program by Inco in mid-1983 to develop a continuous loader for bulk mining of our hardrock orebodies, the need for a rapid ore transportation system was recognized to match the increased extraction rates planned. Two methods were investigated, truck haulage and conveyor belt. As a result, a conveyor belt system has since been designed and installed with a continuous loader at Stobie Mine and an electric truck has been designed, fabricated and assembled, with shop testing underway. This paper deal s with the latter project. BackgroundMany existing mining horizons which could utilize continuous loaders do not have the straight runs required for conveyor belts. In these situations, truck haulage would be the only alternative of the other transportation methods that would be practical. In order to match the high productivity potential of the continuous loader, however, a more efficient trucking system is required than would be available with conventional diesel powered trucks or with electric truck designs commercially available, or under development. A higher capacity truck and an automated operation is necessary so that the application of additional units to suit increasing haulage distances matches loader output without reducing over-all productivity because of the need for additional operators.A first effort to work with a major electrical manufacturer was unsuccessful and resulted in a project delay of almost one year. In November 1984, an investigation into the concept was reinstigated with UTDC, and an agreement to start design was reached in April 1985."

The data are. however, based on cratering performance to a single free planar surface.In practice. the more common circumstance involves an angular surf ace geometry. such as occurs at the toe of a bench or the wall of a stope. It is for the purpose of investigating this circumstance that the described test work was conducted.The test objectives were: (1) to observe the change in single-charge cratering performance between planesurface and angle geometry; (2) to identify the optimum performance of single charges cratering to a plane surface. cratering from a bench sub-grade position and cratering from a condition of zero sub-grade or stope wall geometry; and (3) to observe the performance of row-of-charges cratering to an angular surface at various row burials and spacing. "Use of zinc shot feed is a well-established procedure among North American electro-galvanizers. This form of zinc is easy to handle and relatively inexpensive when compared with zinc oxide. This paper reports results on the kinetics of zinc shot dissolution in traditional pure zinc solutions and in electrolytes used for the plating of nickel/zinc alloys. Despite the cementation of minor amounts of nickel in the latter solution, acceptable dissolution rates of the zinc shot can be achieved through proper adjustment of the solution velocity. Under these conditions, the nickel shell produced by cementation is continuously abraded, exposing the underlying zinc.IntroductionThe use of insoluble, noble metal-containing anodes rather than soluble zinc anodes for the operation of high current density electro-galvanizing lines has gained almost universal acceptance. Two major reasons for this trend are:• improved control of the process by virtue of constant inter-electrode distance; and• increased productivity because the operation of the lines does not require the relatively frequent interruptions for replacement of consumed anodes .The results of the principal anode and cathode reactions are, respectively, depletion of the zinc content of the electrolyte and the increase on its acidity;"

Over 2 million tons of NH3-N were discharged in China per year recently, rare earth industry contributed 7.03% of NH3-N pollutant from industrial wastewater in 2007. Wastewater containing NH3-N and heavy metals mainly produced in RE extraction saponificated with ammonia and precipitated by ammonia bicarbonate. Generally, 1 ton REO cost 0.6-1.2 ton ammonia for extraction and 1.6 ton ammonia bicarbonate for precipitation, and produce 35-100 ton wastewater. Processes, like Na-saponificated, Ca-saponificated and Non-saponificated technique, are widely studied to reduce the adverse environmental effect of RE industry, while traditional processes still have advantage in production cost, process stability and product quality. In this study, a novel process that combines distillation and air-stripping is developed. NH3-N is removed and recovered based on relative volatility difference of NH3 and H2O. Phase equilibrium, heat equilibrium are calculated to determine process parameters. Hydrodynamic performance like flow field distribution is also simulated. Then, design parameters for distillation trays or structured packing are determined based on calculations and simulations. Besides, the phase diagram of (NH4)2SO4-NH4Cl-H2O in 30°C - 100°C, the typical salts composition of nonferrous wastewater, is studied to ensure commercial plants’ continuous operation. Ammonia removal tower (ART) with different high efficient column internals is designed to fit RE wastewater treatment requirement. The novel process has been commercialized in RE industry in Jiangxi, China. The commercial project operation results show the novel process reached a nearly zero-emission with >99.5% NH3-N was removed and then recovered as ammonia. Combined the novel process, the traditional REO separation process using ammonia and ammonia bicarbonate could achieve NH3-N reuse and the effluent quality meets the discharge standards.

"THE TOWN OF Salmo, rail centre for the Salmo lead-zinc mining district, is in southeastern British Columbia 26 miles by road east of Trail an about the same distance south of Nelson. The belt in which the mines occur is a few miles east of Salmo and extends about 6 miles north of the town and 17 miles south and southwest to the International Boundary. The belt includes the H. B. mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, the Jersey mine of Canadian Exploration Limited, the Reeves MacDonald mine, and the Jack Pot property of New Jersey Zinc Explorations Limited.Since 1949, the Jersey and Reeves MacDonald mines have produced most of the lead and zinc in the district. From 1949 through 1954 these two mines together produced a total of 233,134 ounces of silver, 87,659,399 pounds of lead, 215,708,856 pounds of zinc and 475,397 pounds of cadmium. This amounts to more than 80 per cent of the total production of lead and 95 per cent of the total production of zinc from the district since the first recorded production in 1906. Reserves at the largest properties amount to several million tons of ore containing 4 to 7 per cent combined lead and zinc. Several prospects are potential producers.Regional StructureThe main structural units in the Salmo area are outlined in Figure I, and the major rock units of the stratigraphic column are listed in the following table. The lead and zinc deposits are replacements in a highly deformed limestone formation near the base of the Laib group, and all mineralized zones are on the south and east side of structural unit 2 (see Figure I)."

"A computer-based drill core logging system used to examine computer-based drill core logging system used to examine copper mineralization hosted in volcaniclastic rocks at the Sustut deposit, in north-central British Columbia, has many advantages over conventional logging. A relatively simple format for recording geological information allows complex, but significant, geologic parameters to be recorded consistently, accurately and quickly. This allows graphical presentations and statistical interpretation of the data that lead to rapid and detailed analyses of the control and distribution of copper mineralization at the Sustut deposit.Ore mineralization is concentrated in lens-shaped bodies and is zoned from native copper cores through chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite to a margin containing pyrite. Chalcocite, the principal mineral, occurs mainly in volcaniclastic agglomerate characterized by a specific grain size, a narrow range of matrix and fragment proportions, and a specific sorting.IntroductionWe report here a case history of the practical application of a detailed computer-based drill core logging system applied to the Sustut copper deposit of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The Sustut deposit, containing a few tens of millions of tons of ore grading slightly more than one per cent copper (Church, 1975), is in north-central British Columbia about 875 km north of Vancouver. The deposit is contained in volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks of the Upper Triassic Moosevale Formation, which is within the upper part of the Takla Group (Monger and Church, 1977) of basic volcanic and associated sedimentary rocks. Takla rocks occur along the eastern fringe of the Intermontane Belt in the Canadian Cordillera (Sutherland Brown et al., 1971). The deposit consists of concentrations of copper sulphides, native copper and pyrite within pods and lenses parallel to bedding in the host sedimentary rocks. These sheet-like deposits exhibit a mineral zoning from pyrite at the fringes successively through chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite to native copper at the core (Wilton, 1978; Wilton and Sinclair, 1979)."
