THIS paper summarizes the results of investigations carried out at Sydney Mines, N.S., and at Ottawa, following the disaster at Princess colliery, December 6th, 1938. The Honourable Minister of Mines for Nova Scotia appointed A. E. Cameron special investigator to enquire into and report upon the cause of the rope failure. Public hearings were held in Sydney Mines and evidence taken from many witnesses. The site of the accident was examined in detail and investigations made of the rope layout and colliery practice. At the request of the special investigator, the Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa, kindly undertook technical and scientific examination of the broken ends of the rope. These investigations were carried out in the Metallurgical Laboratories of the Department of Mines and Resources, under the supervision of G. S. Farnham, Metallurgist for the Department. Valuable assistance in interpretation of many features of the investigation was received from other sources. Acknowledgment is due to Messrs. Stuewe, McCall, and Gordon, and other members of the staff of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation; to Messrs. "Ecstall Mining Limited was formed to operate the Kidd Creek mine, discovered by Texasgulf Incorporated in 1961 the orebody is geologically very complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead. The first phase of the operation involved an open pit, railroad and concentrator complex, which was under construction in 1965 and began operations in late 1966. The open pit, with rim dimensions of 2,000 by 1,000 feet, was computer-designed and highlights excellent wall control and efficient ore extraction and grade control. The railroad was built over the worst type of muskeg country, but it has been well maintained, resulting in an uninterrupted supply of ore in the trains. The 10,000-tpd concentrator, located 17 miles from the mine, is highly instrumented and automated. It features computer control of reagents and, in addition to the copper, zinc and lead flotation circuits, has a modern gravity tin plant. The concentrator is large, because very fine grinding is required for good metallurgy and nearly 2,500 tons per day of concentrates are produced. In 1969, work was started on the underground mine to take over from the open pit; it began partial production in mid-1973. The mine is highly instrumented, has a ramp from surface, a high-production shaft, an underground gyratory crusher and an efficient orehandling system, and employs the latest mining techniques. The electrolytic zine plant, rated at 120,000 tons of slab zinc per year, started operation in April, 1972, with batch leaching and purification circuits. It has been converted to continuous leaching and is now in the process of converting to continuous purification. Further modernization and automation will be carried out in the next few years. Five service departments support the five operating departments. These are maintenance, engineering and technical services, geology, administration and employee relations. How these ten departments function and work together using the most advanced technology to produce an efficient operation is the main theme of the Ecstall Story."

"The Island Mountain mine is at the southeast end of Island mountain; across Jack of Clubs lake from the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine.; The orebodies consist of quartz veins and pyritic replacement deposits in limestone. To December 31; 1944; there has been mined 296; 273 tons of quartz-vein ore averaging about 0.34 oz. gold a ton; and 101; 002 tons of sulphide ore averaging about 0.83 oz. gold a ton; a total of 397; 275 tons averaging 0.46 oz. From this; 175; 985 fine oz. of gold and about 26; 450 fine oz. of silver were recovered; having a value of $6; 510; 521.More than 95 per cent of the production has come from a band 500 feet wide along the contact of the Rainbow and overlying Baker members and extending about 100 feet into the latter. Evidence that the Rainbow belongs stratigraphically above the Baker is presented later in this paper. Both members are most variable lithologically, and individual beds and whole series of beds pinch out in short distances. In part, at least, this is due to squeezing out incidentally to intense folding. No section can be claimed with assurance to be really representative. However, both memb.ers are composed predominantly of quartzitic rocks. Both contain argillaceous quartzite, argillite, limy quartzite, limy argillite, limestone (marble), and minor amounts of highly ankeritized rocks believed to be igneous sills possibly originally approaching diorite in composition."

A meeting between representatives of the Scientific and Industrial Research Council of Alberta and the Deputy Minister of Mines for Canada was held at Edmonton in May, 1929, for the purpose of formulating a co-operative plan for carrying forward studies in aid of the development of commercial methods for utilizing the bituminous sands of Alberta. It was agreed that to the Alberta Research Council should be allocated the general problem of investigation of the processes for the separating of bitumen from the sands, including studies of methods of emulsifying, dehydrating and otherwise preparing separated bitumen for industrial applications. It was further agreed that during the present year the work of the Alberta Research Council should be to continue its laboratory investigations of points of design of its separation plant; to further perfect its separation procedure; to recondition its existing separation plant at Dunvegan Yards, Edmonton, in the light of laboratory studies and to operate it for the purpose of demonstrating its efficiency; to carry on tests in emulsifying and dehydrating or otherwise preparing separated bitumen for industrial application; and on the basis of the experience gained in the operation of the preliminary plant at Dunvegan Yards to prepare and design and, as far as possible, to proceed with the erection of, a semi-commercial separation plant at a site to be chosen, probably at the bituminous sand deposits near McMurray, Alberta. This paper presents, in the main, a progress report of the carrying out of this programme.

Mkango Resources Limited is developing the Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element Project in southeast Malawi. Since being awarded the exclusive exploration licence for the project in January 2010, Mkango has completed an extensive work programme including detailed mineralogical studies, geological mapping, geochemical sampling and trenching, environmental and social studies, two phases of diamond drilling, and extensive metallurgical test work. In October 2012, the company announced a NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate comprising an Indicated resource of 13.2 million tonnes grading 1.62% total rare earth oxides (TREO) and an Inferred resource of 18.6 million tonnes grading 1.38% TREO. The Indicated mineral resource estimate formed the basis for commencement of the Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS). The mineralogical program identified the fluorocarbonate mineral, synchysite, and the phosphate mineral, apatite, as the primary rare earth element (REE) bearing minerals. Extensive flotation testwork conducted at Mintek in South Africa has resulted in an effective regime to increase the REO grade 2.6 times. Initial leaching testwork by Mintek identified that a selective hydrochloric acid (HCl) leach can target the gangue minerals with minimal REE dissolution. Recent testwork undertaken at Nagrom in Western Australia has expanded on this work to develop a two stage HCl leach process incorporating HCl recycling. A downstream processing route of purification and cerium rejection to produce a cerium depleted high grade REE concentrate suitable as feed to a separation facility is proposed.

"More than 20 years ago, Paques B.V. introduced innovative biotechnologies to recover metals and to remove sulfate from aqueous streams. These technologies find their origin in the exploration of microorganisms involved in the global sulfur cycle. Currently, several sulfur cycle biotechnologies are applied successfully at full-scale. The sulfur cycle is closely linked with the iron cycle, and also the latter offers opportunities for application of innovative biotechnology for the mining industry. Microorganisms of the natural iron cycle carry out reactions that are not feasible by chemical methods such as ferrous iron oxidation with oxygen at pH below 4. Iron oxidation with oxygen can be conducted using microorganisms living at pH between 0.5 and 7 and at temperatures between 0 and 95ºC. Remarkably these microorganisms can also carry out arsenite oxidation at similar acidic conditions and high temperatures. Making use of the extreme features of these microorganisms, Paques and Wageningen University have developed a biological process to precipitate arsenic as scorodite. This biological formation of scorodite is a novel combination of biological oxidation and biocrystallization. Depending on the level of saturation, biological oxidation rates and operational conditions, we could control the formation of the iron precipitates such as jarosite and scorodite. Currently new microorganisms have been harvested from hot springs and rock acid mine drainage to foster the growth of specialized microbial communities with potential high iron and arsenic oxidation capacities and higher resistance to other metals. In our paper we address the ongoing research and development of the bioscorodite process.THE USE OF IRON TO REMOVE ARSENIC In 2015 several environmental disasters related to the release of mine wastewater and tailings occurred. On August 5th, a waste water spill occurred from the Gold King Mine near Silverton, Colorado. A dam holding the tailing pond was damaged and spilled three million US gallons (11 ML) of mine wastewater and tailings, including elements such as cadmium, lead and arsenic, into Cement Creek, a tributary of the Animas River in Colorado. “At their peak, arsenic levels were 300 times the normal level and lead was 3,500 times the normal level” (The Guardian, 2015). In early November, another collapse of a mining dam in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais spilled between ten and sixteen thousand US gallons of water and sediment after a dam failed from an iron ore mine. Arsenic and mercury polluted the Doce River, arsenic levels were found more than ten times above the legal limit in some places of the river (The Guardian, 2015). Waste production is inevitable during Mining. However, a preventive waste management strategy could have minimised waste production, maximised waste reuse and classified waste by their hazardous degree."

Samples of a high impurity (90.05 wt. % Cu, 4076 ppm Pb, 1939 ppm As and 635 ppm Bi) commercial copper anode were characterized and then electrorefined in a laboratory scale cell. Anode inclusions were examined using backscatter mode scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Hundreds of inclusions were measured for size, morphology and composition. Commonly found inclusions were copper oxide (Cu2O), complex oxides (Cu-Pb-Bi-As-O) and copper selenides/tellurides. The weight percent of lead and arsenic increased with increasing inclusion size up to 4- 5 microns. During electrorefining, starter sheet ductility was negatively impacted by thiourea addition. The importance of arsenic (V) concentration on the electrolyte concentration of bismuth was observed. INTRODUCTION Copper electrorefining is a commercial process used to produce the majority of the world’s refined copper. During this process, impure copper anodes are dissolved electrolytically, and high purity copper is deposited on cathodes. As the anodes dissolve, the impurities either accumulate in the electrolyte or report to solids that form on anodes surfaces or at the bottom of the refining cell. These solids are called slimes. Slimes contain precious metals and are collected for further processing. Slimes are also an important outlet for problem impurities such as lead, antimony and bismuth. The electrorefining process is operated in such a way to encourage the deportment of these elements to the slimes. Impurities in copper anodes have been studied extensively by Chen and Dutrizac (1990, 1993 and 2005). The most common impurities found in modern copper anodes include: Ag, As, Au, Bi, Fe, Ni, O, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn and Te. Impure copper anodes are produced by pyrometallurgical methods and have purities ranging from 97.7–99.7% Cu (Moats et al., 2019). The composition ranges of commercial copper anodes from the 2019 worldwide tankhouse survey are given in Table 1. The concentrations of anode impurities vary widely dependent on the source material and prior processing steps. Based on the work of Chen and Dutrizac, both gold and silver are predominantly found in solid solution within the copper grains while a minor amount of Ag can be found in Cu2(Se/Te) inclusions. Nickel is entirely soluble within the copper grains up to anode compositions of 2500–3000 ppm Ni; above which NiO and kupferglimmer phases are formed (Chen & Dutrizac, 1990). As, Bi, Pb and Sb are found in solid solution within copper and within oxide inclusions typically found along grain boundaries. Oxides are formed due to the presence of 0.13-0.18 wt. % O (Chen & Dutrizac, 1990). This is because during solidification of the cast anodes, impurities are enriched in the liquid phase as the copper grains nucleate and grow. The inclusions form from the last liquid to freeze, which is typically along grain boundaries (Wenzl & Filzwieser, 2007; Wenzl, Filzwieser, Mori & Pesl, 2008).

Introduction If one had been called upon to describe petroleum oil refining seventy-five years ago, he could have acceded to the request quite satisfactorily in about fifteen minutes. Fifteen years ago, an hour and a half would have been sufficient to give a general idea of oil refining, and of the equipment used for this purpose. Today, so extensive has been the research into all phases of the refining and manufacturing of petroleum products, and so rapid the strides in improvement in technique and equipment, that I doubt if a week would suffice to give an adequate outline of ail the ramifications of present-day oil refining. I propose to only 'hit the high spots', dealing particularly with the equipment and methods employed at the Imperoyal refinery, which you are to visit. Crude oil, the refiner's raw material, contains essentially only two elements, hydrogen and carbon. These are not present in the free state but are combined in various proportions as 'hydrocarbons'. A given crude oil is not made up of just one hydrocarbon, but of myriads; some solid, others liquid, and still others gaseous at atmospheric temperature and pressure, ail dissolved one in the other. Moreover, the nature and the relative amounts of the several hydrocarbons vary very considerably in crude oils from different sources. That is, a 'crude' from Oklahoma will contain hydrocarbons not present in crude from Mexico, and is different again from the Venezuela crude. Not only this but oil in a certain well in, say, Peru may be differently constituted from that in a well half a mile distant from it.

Telfer bulk concentrates typically contain 8% chalcopyrite, 8% chalcocite, 45% pyrite and 80-120 g/t gold. Although very high copper and gold recoveries can be obtained by subjecting the concentrate to a "conventional" high temperature pressure oxidation step followed by copper recovery by solvent extraction and electrowinning, and cyanidation of the leach residue for gold recovery, the cost of lime required for neutralisation and power for oxygen generation was such that the process was uneconomic in terms of operating costs. The challenge therefore was to develop an alternative flowsheet that maximised copper and gold recovery in which the reagent costs were commercially attractive. An additional objective was to reduce the capital cost so that the overall NPV and IRR values would enhance the economic viability of the total project. Following a series of batch and locked cycle testwork programs, supported by Metsim modelling, it was established that the same high levels of overall copper and gold recoveries can be obtained by use of a novel two-stage split leaching circuit in which the chalcocite component is leached in a low temperature (90-110°C) circuit with the chalcopyrite component treated in a high temperature (220-250°C) circuit. This split circuit has a number of advantages, including minimising the required capacity of the high temperature autoclave, as well as reducing the overall lime consumption and simplifying the total process water balance. The paper outlines the basis for the development of the flowsheet and discusses the integration of the leaching stages into the overall circuit.

Kazakhstan’s first commercial copper-leach solvent extraction-electrowinning plant, Central Asia Metals’ Kounrad project, was commissioned in April 2012. Exploiting low grade waste stockpiles produced during Soviet era open pit mining, a 10,000 tpa copper cathode plant was designed, constructed and commissioned within 18 months. Overcoming initial challenges with a workforce unfamiliar with the technology and with extensive periods of sub-zero conditions during winter the project has consistently met targets and produced high quality copper cathodes at cash costs of less than US$1/lb. Challenges encountered during the first two years of operation are described and future plans briefly discussed.

"When pyrite oxidizes in dark grey/black, calcareous, mudrocks or in argillaceous limestones, ferrous sulfate is formed and sulfuric acid is released. The sulfuric acid combines with the calcite present in the rock and calcium sulfate (gypsum) develops. When this occurs on the outer edges of aggregate particles, the gypsum forms in the matrix hence there may be little expansion of the general material. However, when the chemical reactions occur within the rock fragments, particularly on microscopic, clayrich, laminae, the developing crystals exert a significant pressure on the host material. If the rock is medium strong to strong, the force of crystallization splits the rock along the weaker planes, facilitating the ingress of the oxidizing agents and the continuation of the chemical reactions. In addition to causing dilation/heave, some of the engineering properties of the material are changed, including the strength, Los Angeles value, water absorption etc. As a consequence material, which at the time of quarrying would be acceptable for use beneath floors or hardstandings, would no longer be considered suitable.INTRODUCTIONMudrocks accreting in aerobic environments are frequently disturbed by organisms and as a consequence there is often little sign of bedding. In contrast, sediments which have formed in anoxic environments commonly have distinct bedding planes which, because of the grain size of the accreting material, are often smooth and planar. These rocks are frequently referred to as shales, which O’Brien and Slatt (1990) define as “characterised by a finely laminated structure, which imparts a fissility approximately parallel to the bedding.” This should not be confused with rhythmic bedding where the variation in grain size results in lithological laminations or colour changes.Early geologists, in the stratigraphic naming of rocks, often used the term shale for material which is now more likely to be described as mudstone or mudrock (Hawkins and Pinches, 1992). In many contexts, the width of the bedding is an important factor, not only in determining the rock name but also in indicating the potential engineering characteristics. Until recently a shale was considered to have bedding separations of less than 20mm, i.e. the bedding was described as laminated. However, in an engineering context, EN 14689: 2003, Annex A, defines shale by specifying a bedding thickness of < 6mm; such a material would be described as thinly laminated in BS 5930:1999. Ideally the term shale should be abandoned and be replaced by fissile mudstone or fissile mudrock."

AEROPROSPECTING may be defined as the application of the air view to the search for mineral deposits. The term is suggested as a preferable alternative to either aerial prospecting (which may be confused with areal prospecting) or air prospecting. The air view may be obtained by visual observation from an aircraft or by examination of air photographs; each has its particular advantages and disadvantages. Aeroprospecting should be regarded only as an aid to, and not as a substitute for, accepted prospecting methods ( l ). The Precambrian region north of Great Slave lake consists of two well defined physiographic units, a feature first noted by J. T. Wilson (2). The boundary between these lies close to the north shore of the east arm of the lake and extends northwesterly near Spencer, Beniah, Carp, and Ghost lakes (Figure 1). South and west of this line, exposed bed-rock makes up the greater part of the land area; eskers are very rare, and overburden is largely limited to rock-walled valleys and depressions. North and east of the line, outcrops are rare or absent, eskers are abundant, and most of the surface consists of drumlin-like drift hills, elongated parallel to the direction of ice movement (Figure 2). Where this boundary passes through the area shown in Figure 1, it lies near the 1,200-foot contour and may mark the maximum extent of the lake or sea arm present in this vicinity toward the end of the Pleistocene period. For convenience, the first area may be called the &apos;bed-rock belt&apos; and the other the &apos;drift belt&apos;.

"GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."

"The Pronto Mine located at the east end of Lake Lauzon, Long Township, some 12 miles east of Blind River is of historic note being the discovery locality and the first producing mine of the Elliot Lake uranium camp. Radioactive bedrock was discovered in 1949, a commercial deposit was verified in 1953 and production commenced in 1955. Production continued to April 1960: total tons milled 2,264,404 from which 4,643,835 pounds U,O, were recovered at a recovered grade of 2.05 pounds U3O8 per short ton.The orebody is in a bed of pyritic quartz pebble conglomerate at the base of the Matinenda Formation of the Elliot Lake Group of the Huronian Supergroup. The rocks strike east and dip 15 degrees to 20 degrees south and unconformably overlie Early Precambrian granite, the upper surface of which is marked by a regolith. Several diabase dykes cut the orebody which is also affected by albite, chlorite, and carbonate-rich alterations. To the south the orebody is cut by a fault. The orebody is 6to 10 feet but locally 10 to 15 feet thick, has a strike length of 3,500 feet and extends down dip for 3,600 feet to a depth of 1,000feet. Some 300,000 tons of ore grade mineralization remain in the deeper portion of the mine.IntroductionThe Pronto Mine, (Photo I) at the east end of Lake Lauzon in Long Township some 12 miles east of Blind River, is of particular interest as being the discovery site and the first producing mine of the Elliot Lake camp.Production at the Pronto Mine commenced in 1955 and continued until 1960 when the mill was converted to treat copper ore from the nearby Pater Mine at Spragge. "Froth Flotation is undoubtedly one of the most critical processes in coking coal washing plants. This work was carried out at Bhelatand Coal Preparation Plant of Tata Steel was with an objective of cost optimization in fine coal processing. The sources of raw coal for the plant include coal from underground mines of Jharia coalfield and procured open-cast raw coal. Coal from different sources vary in quality and possess different floatability characteristics.Synthetic collector is being used in plant as a flotation reagent. An alternate collector with new chemistry was developed for reducing total treatment cost without compromising product yield and quality. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to assess the performance of various sources of raw coal and plant scale trial was started. At first, the new generation coal collector was entirely substituted with the existing collector in the laboratory scale. However the plant scale trial data was not in accordance with laboratory results and indicated inferior flotation performanceThe issue was studied and data based conclusions were drawn that the new generation collector aids faster and uncontrollable kinetics. A decision was taken for co-dosing of the synthetic and new collector for the second phase of the trial. A detailed laboratory analysis was done again and few dosing ratios that predicted optimum results were selected for plant trial. The dosing ratio was optimised as per flotation yield and product ashes during the plant trial. The results showed significant improvement from the first phase and optimum dosing rates were decided based on plant observations and data collection. The influence of various process indicators including water quality, feed and product ashes and process yield was studied during all the trials and promising results were established. The co-dosing of both the collectors conferred cost advantage and enabled to achieve superior performance."

The amount of impurities to be processed in a copper smelting process has increased for recent years because of an increase in the electronic scrap amount. It has been found that Sb and Ni effect on the operation of our copper electrorefining process. It is found that the current efficiency of the copper electrorefining tended to be decreased as the Ni concentration in the electrolyte increased. The passivation of the process seemed to be more related to SO4 concentration in the electrolyte rather than the Ni concentration in it. The current efficiency decreased when the Sb content in the anode was high. A high Sb content in the anode caused easy passivation by forming a gel-like film in the slime layer. We have developed a method to for see the anode passivation in a short time while generating a slime layer. We confirmed the tendency of passivation through the experiment of changing Pb content in anode. Passivation was easily occur with an increase in Pb content in the anode. The amount of slime increased as the Pb content in the anode increased. This suggests that passivation was facilitated because liquid diffusion near the anode was inhibited. INTRODUCTION The amount of impurities to be processed in copper smelting has been growing in recent years because the amount of electronic scrap has increased. Figure 1 shows that the contents of Sb and Ni in copper anodes have increased since 2007.High Sb and Ni contents in the copper anode decreased the current efficiency of the process and made the quality of copper cathode poor because of the anode passivation and the formation of floating slime in the electrolyte during electrorefining. If these influences of impurities are suppressed, it would be possible to make copper electro-refining current density higher and to process much amount of electronic scrap. We examined the components of our copper electro-refining process like anode composition, slime properties and electrolyte composition, and investigated the mechanism by which Sb and Ni affect passivation and current efficiency. DURING and after 1949, various groups of British mining engineers came to the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, at Sydney, N .S., to see at first hand the Dosco MINER ( 1). These visits culminated in 1952 with the ordering of four Dosco Miners by the (British) National Coal Board on an experimental basis through their Experimental Expenditure Funds. Others are now on order. The first machine was delivered in February, 1953, and, after slight alterations to suit the different power supply, the machine was made ready to work. Due mainly to the size of the machine, new rules and regulations governing its operation had to be put into effect and it was not until April, 1954, that the machine was put underground. It started to produce in June of that year. The three others were delivered early in 1955. The authors were sent to England by the Dominion Coal Company to install and demonstrate these machines and to work with the Coal Board engineers to- further interest in the machines in the British coal fields .

Introduction In presenting this paper on the water-power resources of the Province of Manitoba, it was considered that a brief resume of the power resources of Canada, of the power already developed, and its utilization in the industries 9f the country, would be of particular interest in showing the rapid progress that has already been made. Amongst Canada&apos;s national assets, water power occupies a foremost place because of the facilities it provides for the development of her other great natural resources. The rapid development of the mining, pulp and paper, and general manufacturing industries, and the concomitant growth in urbanization, with its numerous demands for domestic, commercial, and municipal service power, have combined to stimulate hydraulic development to a point surpassing even the most sanguine predictions of a few years ago. With the bringing into operation during 1928 of hydraulic turbines aggregating over 550,300 h.p., and of a further 378,400 h.p. in 1929, Canada&apos;s total hydraulic development at the end of 1929 amounted to over 5,700,000 h.p., and in this year, 1930, the active construction in hydro-electric plants throughout the country totals in excess of 1,600,000 h .p.

THE profitable disposal and utilization of much of our slack coal, lignite, and other low-grade fuels is one of the major problems facing the coal mining industry of Canada today. It is my belief that the pulverization process applied to these fuels opens the door to greater efficiency and greater prosperity, and I wish to discuss briefly with you some features of its development and advantages to date. Indeed, the art of burning pulverized coal under stationary boilers is one of the romances of modern engineering. As a Nova Scotian, I feel some pride in the fact that at Chignecto Mines, N.S., was built in 1906 the first pit-mouth power plant on the North American continent. This was built to make effective for the first time Edison&apos;s dream of carrying coal for power by wire rather than by rail. This plant, built by the Maritime Coal, Railway and Power Company, Limited, success-fully utilized underfeed stokers for twenty years but in 1927 was replaced by a more modern plant equipped with machinery for burning pulverized coal, which is now operating very successfully. A further source of pride is the fact that the first boilers on this continent to be operated by pulverized coal were installed by the Dominion Coal Company at New Waterford, N.S., in 1912 and were satisfactorily operated during the lifetime of the plant. It is an acknowledged fact that average living conditions on a large part of the North American continent are far superior to those of any other people on earth. The reason is that we use so much more machinery per capita, and cheap power supply has been a large factor in bringing that about. Statistics show that where one horse-power was used one hundred years ago to assist man in his work, five hundred horse-power is used today. Truly a remarkable development and the key to our present high standard of living. Lack of coal in the chief industrial centres of Canada has forced the extra-ordinary development of the water powers which Providence has placed in those centres. How many of us realize that Canada stands second in the world in the per capita development of hydro power, Switzerland being first and the United States sixth? From this condition, we are reminded of the fact that the per capita foreign trade of Canada far exceeds that of our great neighbour to the South-but another illustration of the benefits accruing from our great power development.
