The pyrite-sphalerite-galena and barite orebodies at the Rosebery mine are concordant with the shale host rock and have been deformed into one system of folds with an associated axial plane cleavage. The folds are tight and overturned with east-dipping axial planes. Folds in the sulphide ore are commonly disharmonic, particularly between adjacent bands of different composition.Concentric style folds occur in the competent bands, e.g. pyrite-rich bands. Similar style folds are predominant in the less competent sphalerite-galena-rich bands and also in the shale of the host rock. The trends and plunges of the fold hinge-lines are variable but axial planes are of reasonably constant orientation throughout the mine area. The folds in the orebodies are of limited axial extent, approximating to conical folds, and are arranged in en echelon patterns. The fold system was possibly formed in one period of folding by heterogeneous strain that may have been caused by the presence of a mass of tectonically mobile sulphide ore. Lineations parallel to the ore/host rock contacts appear to reflect movement between the ore and the host rock during folding.

New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Waikato North Head 30 km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook and Taharoa 70 km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan.   Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3 km off shore through two underwater pipelines. Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook 18 km through a 200 mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.   A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.

Highwall stability is a major consideration in optimising opencast mine geometry. It involves assessing the risk of those slope failures that are large enough to have significant cost, safety and/or operational implications. These risks are then balanced against the value of the resource to arrive at an acceptable slope design. Load-deformation models (commonly referred to as ænumericalÆ models) of slopes provide a powerful tool in this decision-making process since they can be verified well before slope failure occurs. This gives the slope designer increased confidence in reviewing designs during excavation, potentially allowing early revision of pit geometry to either increase or decrease safety margins as appropriate. However, these models are not always adopted as they depend heavily on an appropriate choice of constitutive model and material parameters.   A preliminary load-deformation model of a 170m highwall in Solid Energy North (SEN) OperationsÆ Awaroa 4 opencast coal mine in the Rotowaro Coalfield has been prepared. This uses a strain-dependent constitutive model based on laboratory test results, strength parameters developed by SEN and excavation monitoring data. The laboratory testing has included triaxial compression tests on large-diameter fractured samples to characterise the stress-strain response of the closely-jointed soft rock masses that exist in many parts of the mine. Data from the monitoring of a 25m cut made during excavation of a haul road has been used to refine and verify the constitutive model. The resulting highwall model has predicted highwall crest movements corresponding to the excavation of each bench, for comparison with monitored values. Key model outputs are total horizontal movements of about 0.5m near the highwall crest and shear strains of 0.5-0.7% at the locations of potential bedding-parallel shear planes underlying the highwall. Most of the movement is expected to occur as creep rather than as an immediate response to excavation.

Single particle breakage tests have been used by a number of researchers to investigate some salient features of the complex comminution process. The characteristics of the common single particle breakage tests such as single impact, double impact and slow compression tests are examined and the results from these tests are compared. A comparison of the results from single particle breakage tests with grindability and ball mill tests is given. Application of the results from single particle breakage tests to modelling industrial comminution processes is described. The necessity for further research into single particle breakage tests to develop a simple but comprehensive technique for estimating the breakage characteristics of ores is discussed.

The sedimentary basins of this region developed in the collision zone of thePacific Ocean plate and the continent. Stresses were transmitted thorough wedge-like lithospheric blocks, such as the Okotsk Sea, East Kamchatka, Aleutian and other smaller blocks. Compression and inversion were more active at the boundaries: ***INSERT EQ*** and ***INSERT EQ*** in places. Tension, rifting and the increase in the rate of sedimentation were marked in P1-2, P3, N12, and also in N2 û Q in places. Structural plan changes of the sedimentary basins and possible oil, gas and fluid migration occurred more actively at the boundaries: ***INSERT EQ***.

The disasters between 1920 and 1979 in coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales due to underground fire, gas or coal dust explosion or to gas or coal outbursts, have been assessed. The evidence relating to disasters caused by gas explosion points strongly to divergence from safe mining practice as the main cause. There is a need for greater training and education of personnel, closer analysis of gas reports, better monitoring and testing procedures, improved ventilation standards and a policy where safe working practice is actively encouraged. Conditions in the New South Wales occurrences of gas explosion were similar to those at Collinsville, Queensland in that dykes, igneous sills, burnt out coal and faulting were common to all. Information on outbursts indicates that contributing factors were intrusions, depth of cover, fault zones and other geological disturbances, methods of work, pressure and type of gas.

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. One such challenge was the need to build and commission the new spiral circuit in isolation from the operating plant.The aim of this paper will be to highlight some of the challenges faced in a complex brownfield project such as the ID OBP upgrade and discuss how they were managed to enable the successful commissioning of the process in early 2012.CITATION:Selvapandian E and Barr, R, 2013. Japan is the largest coal importer in the world, importing from Australia, China, Indonesia, Canada, Vietnam, etc. In Indonesia, most of the produced coal is extracted from open cut mines. More open cut coal mines will be developed to fill the demand for coal in Indonesia and the world. Many surveys and projects for developing new coal mines and transferring mining technology are being conducted in tropical counties such as Indonesia and Vietnam with the aid of the Japanese Government. It has, however, been pointed out that excessive and precarious development of mines in tropical areas will damage the environments around the mines including cultivated lands, and reduce the precious rainforest. This would undoubtedly exacerbate the instability of the global climate and the food crisis in the world. This paper describes the effects of flyash on the control of acid mine drainage in order to avoid potential negative impacts on the environment caused from open cut coal mines.

IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.

Taking the Presidential chair of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, my first duty is to thank you for the high honour and position you have conferred on me. A position entailing the highest compliment the Institute could bestow on any of its members, and one which I feel my inability to properly fulfil, inasmuch, as you have men in your ranks of the highest scientific training residing on that great continent where the head quarters of the Institute is established, while my engagements here will not permit me leaving this colony but for a very limited period.About six years ago, during the time the mining boom was at its height, there came to this colony from England, Germany, and South Africa, several mining engineers, who in conjunction with the mining engineers here, formed an Institute which we soon found we were not able to maintain. The mining boom gradually died away, and many engineers have left the colony to find employment in other parts of the world. We made overtures to your Iqstitute to take us under your wing, which you were kind enough to do, and the outcome is that you have come over 1200 miles to hold a meeting in New Zealand. The paucity of members residing in this colony does not admit of a large attendance; but we heartily welcome you to our shores and hope you will enjoy a holiday visiting some of the principal mining centres and exchanging ideas, which not only improves our minds, and widens our field research, but also tends to lead to further economic improvements in the extraction of metals the earth contains...

Studies have been carried out on the dead roasting of a copper-iron and a copper-nickel-iron sulfide concentrate, followed by segregation roasting with coal and leaching with either curpric sulfate in aqueous acetonitrile or cupric chloride in brine solution to preferentially solubilize copper. The effect of dead roasting and segregation roasting conditions on the overall leaching of copper and the separation of copper from iron and iron and nickel is reported. An excellent separation of copper from iron and a good separation of copper from iron and nickel can be obtained provided sulfur is removed to 0.5 per cent or less during the dead roast and provided the coal addition and temperature of the segregation roast are near the minima required for the segregation of copper.

We can be proud of our growth over the 61 years since the inaugural meeting in Adelaide in April, 1893, which followed suggestions from a provisional committee of mining men, formed in 1892 in Broken Hill.We can also be proud of our technical achievements in the fields of economic geology, mining and metallurgy.Should we be content with the growth of our mining and metallurgical industries over these years? My answer is in the negative. The discovery of new mineral deposits is essential for the continuance and development of the industries we represent.Let me review the background and trends of our industry in an attempt to emphasise the changing factors influencing the search for minerals and their exploitation.Australia was blessed with the discovery of coal in New South Wales in 1796; copper in South Australia at Kapunda, Burra, Wallaroo and Moonta in the eighteen-forties; gold in Victoria and Eastern Australia in the 'fifties; tin at Mount Bischoff, Tasmania, and gold at Charters Towers, Queensland, in the 'seventies; lead-silver at Broken Hill, New South Wales; gold and copper at Mount Morgan, Queensland, and copper at Mount Lyell, Tasmania, in the 'eighties; and gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and zinc-lead atRosebery, Tasmania, in the 'nineties. The location of seismic events in mines is traditionally calculated based on the arrival times of P- and S-waves for a given velocity model (homogeneous or heterogeneous). This technique is successful when the sources of seismic events are sudden and localised (eg episodes of fracturing in solid rock or dynamic slip along a plane of weakness) and thus the radiated seismic waves have clear arrivals. In massive mining operations such as block caves, strong seismic signals often originate from the movement of loose rocks on the perimeter of the fracture zone. These signals are easily recordable but do not contain easily identifiable direct P- and S-waves, making the estimation of location through traditional methods more complicated. This problem has been approached by using a ‘brightness’ location method that estimates the origin of seismic waves based on travel times of envelopes of seismic energy. This tool is extended to be applicable in a heterogeneous velocity environment that now accounts for the presence of a cave or other strong velocity perturbations. Situated in the Greymouth Coalfield, the Mt Davy Block contains a significant resource of high quality bituminous coal suitable for use in metallurgical coking coal blends. The coal, which is all low sulphur, is seen as a complementary deposit to export coking coal at Stockton Mine.   Previous drilling by State Coal Mines (1948 - 1953) and Japanese interests (1970's) have been supplemented by Coal New Zealand drilling (1992 - 1993) and surface mapping. A mining feasibility study was completed in late 1993 and approval gained for the driveage of an exploratory tunnel to the target seam.   Following construction of surface facilities, tunnel driveage on a 1:5 decline commenced from Rewanui in May 1995 and to date about half the required length has been driven. When the seam is intersected a comprehensive geotechnical testing programme will be undertaken to assess the in-situ mining conditions. It is expected that the results will confirm the assumptions made in the feasibility study.   The Mt Davy Mine, at depths of 500 - 700 metres, will be the deepest underground coal mine ever inNew Zealand and in-situ stresses (orientation and magnitude) will be important considerations for mining engineering. The coal has a high gas content and suitable techniques for gas control and prevention/mitigation of coal outbursts will be necessary.   Mine development is scheduled to commence in mid 1998 and an annual production level of 500 000 tonnes is forecast. The coal seams will be developed by continuous miner and coal extraction will be by hydraulic monitor. Coal will be pumped to the surface and from Rewanui transported five kilometres to Dunollie either by truck or slurry pipeline. At Dunollie a coal dewatering plant, coal stockpile and rail loadout will be constructed.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of orogenic gold deposits is commonly a two-stage process. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. A new test coke oven of 7 cu. ft. capacity is described. The oven was designed to simulate conditions in a central section of a battery oven and a special feature is the achievement of unidirectional heating from theflues on either side of the charge.The method of charging permits close control of charge conditions such as bulk density and moisture content.These conditions, as well as coking conditions (e.g. flue temperatures and coking time) must be varied to simulate conditions in different batteries. The effects of several variables on coke quality are discussed.Using test oven conditions corresponding to those of Newcastle steelworks batteries, good agreement was obtained between strength indices of test oven and battery cokes. For 17 tests, the average ASTM stability and hardness indices for the test oven coke were 38· 5 per cent and 69·7 per cent, while those for the battery coke were 37· 4 per cent and 67·6 per cent.Observed relationships between coke yield and productivity, and volatile matter and charge moisture are given.The use of a test oven to classify test coals into prime-, medium-, poor-, and non-coking coals is discussed.This may be achieved by observing the effects of the test coal in blends with other coals. The results of a series of blending tests are presented.The dangers of attempting to predict coke quality from a single coal property are pointed out, since this can be done only for very restricted ranges of coals.A diagram is given showing the established trends in the effects of blending various types of Australian coals on coke strength.

The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.'fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

The Waimumu area, 12 km southwest of Gore, is underlain by the Gore Lignite Measures, an early Tertiary fluvial sequence approximately 500 m thick resting on Triassic-Jurassic argillitic basement. The Waimumu Quartz Gravels (Pliocene) have been deposited locally and are in part due to the localised reworking of the Gore Lignite Measures. Structurally the area is dominated by the Dunsdale Fault System, a steeply dipping series of NE trending reverse faults (Isaac and Lindqvist, 1990). The Belle-Brook, Hedgehope and Parker Road sites sampled are adjacent to the downthrown (east) side of the Hedgehope Fault.The authigenic gold-sulphide association at Belle-Brook was discovered in 1987 (Falconer, 1987: Clough and Craw, 1989). Despite a very limited amount of alluvial mining a significant quantity of authigenic marcasite has developed. Authigenic sulphide trace element analysis has shown anomalous amounts of As, Ni, Cr and to a lesser extent Zn, Pb and eu (Table 1). It has been established that the nickel occurs as a colloform banded Ni sulphide, possibly bravoite, within the marcasite (Figures 1 & 2). Arsenic and nickel (re)mobilisation are well documented in the literature. Generally As and heavy metals are mobilised in the groundwater as a result of the oxidation of sulphides (ie as a result of mining). At Belle-Brook it is reasonable to assume the authigenic sulphide trace element composition reflects either localised groundwater contamination or hydrothermal mineralisation. This poster presents some preliminary findings.

Automated multi-sensor core loggers (MSCL) measure petrophysical properties of diamond drill cores, including gamma density, P-wave velocity, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. A Geotek MSCL system has been used to record petrophysical data on archival drill core from Cadia East Au-Cu porphyry deposit, New South Wales, Australia, for correlation with metallurgical parameters. P-wave modulus, calculated from density and P-wave velocity, exhibits a correlation with small-scale crushability (A*b) test results, and hence offers a means for æcontinuousÆ characterisation of ore crushability at Cadia East. Magnetic susceptibility has proved to be a good indicator of alteration styles, and is a possible indicator of crushability.

The uptake of nickel into the lattice of pyrrhotite, Fe1 _1J S was studied experimentally in the temperature range 200°C to 760°C. Nickel from both aqueous solutions and salt melts diffuses rapidly into the sulphidelattice with an accompanying release of iron into the solution or melt. The rate of uptake of nickel and its diffusion into the sulphide lattice were followed by optical microscopy and by analysis with an electron probe microanalyser. Some geological consequences of this phenomenon affecting the distribution of nickel in rocks associated with nickel-iron sulphide ores are discussed.
