Porphyry-Cu (Mo-Au) deposits and iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits are both characterised by the presence of abundant halite-saturated fluid inclusions that reflect the circulation of hyper-saline hydrothermal brines. While it is widely accepted that brines involved in the formation of porphyry copper deposits derive from unmixing of moderate-salinity, intermediate-density fluids that exsolve from crystallising magmas, the source of brines that form IOCG deposits remains enigmatic and intensely debated. In this extended abstract, we summarise the fluid inclusion characteristics of both deposit types and present trace element compositional data for halite-saturated fluid inclusions from both porphyry copper deposits and IOCG deposits from around the world.While both deposit types typically contain halite-saturated fluid inclusions, vapour-rich fluid inclusions in IOCG deposits are less common than in porphyry deposits and evidence for fluid immiscibility is rare. IOCG deposits also typically lack intermediate-density fluid inclusions that characterise the deeper quartz-rich veins in many porphyry deposits. Many IOCG deposits contain CO2-only fluid inclusions, a type of fluid not observed in porphyry Cu deposits.Our fluid inclusion compositional data show that most porphyry Cu (Mo-Au)-related brines are dominated by Na, K and Fe and contain elevated concentrations of Ca, Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn up to around the one per cent level. On the other hand, IOCG brines are Na-Ca-Fe-dominated and typically contain far less Cu, Mn and Zn than porphyry brines. In addition to Ca, these fluids are also strongly enriched in Ba and Sr relative to porphyry-related brines. Such compositions are consistent with extensive fluid-rock interaction and/or an evolved sea water contribution to IOCG brines.A sea water or basinal brine source for IOCG brines is further supported by bromine concentrations that are much higher than is characteristic for porphyry-related brines. Porphyry brines have Cl/Br molar ratios of between 800 and 3000, which is characteristic of primary magmatic brines, whereas the Cl/Br composition of IOCG brines is more variable. For example, Na/Cl/Br ratios of most IOCG deposits in the world-class Carajás district fall on or near the sea water evaporation curve (most Cl/Br molar ratios are between 200 and 1000) and are diagnostic of sedimentary bittern brines. A few of the deposits in this district also show evidence of the input of subordinate amounts of magmatic brine. At Ernest Henry, in the Cloncurry district of Australia, most Cl/Br ratios plot close to the sea water evaporation curve, but Cl/Br ratios of up to ~5000 in several samples suggest the input of lesser amounts of magmatic fluids, and possibly evaporite-dissolution-derived fluids. Taken together with geologic constraints, these data strongly suggest that porphyry-type deposits form from the circulation of dominantly magmatic fluids, while IOCG deposits form from large-scale circulation of high-salinity fluids sourced dominantly from sedimentary basins with variable input of magmatic volatiles.CITATION:Rusk, B, Emsbo, P, Xavier, R P, Corriveau, L, Oliver, N and Zhang, D, 2015. The iron ore industry in Australia has, in recent years, experienced an unprecedented growth phase. But now that major expansions are moving into the operation phase, new challenges have emerged. Whereas initial planning may involve a few modelling studies, ongoing performance monitoring and improvement requires a different, more intense approach. This is especially important in the face of changing factors such as commodity prices, exchange rates and labour markets. Response time is key. As a mining operation proceeds from initial planning to daily operations, the time window for analysis shortens, going from months to weeks to days as the business matures.Simulation models and analysis tools are typically built and run by specialists in the planning phase, but then what? The investment has been made, but realised only once. What if further analysis could be carried out in-house, re-using existing models using up-to-the-minute data? Can we create virtual mines that run in parallel to live operations that allow computers to identify areas of a value creation or operational improvement? These questions can be answered by the innovative application of big data, simulation and predictive analytics. The future will be having this all integrated into one platform that offers, for the first time, an opportunity for non-experts to apply existing modelling and analysis assets – combined with live data – to deliver support for continuous improvement, and the ability to respond quickly to external changes in the best possible way, before they become big problems. These techniques will represent a step change in the ability for operations to maximise efficiency and will underpin the intelligent operations of the future. The mining industry will face numerous challenges over the next 10–15 years as new deposits are likely to be more remote and lower grade and existing deposits will be mined deeper. As a result, mines and mining contractors operating in deep-mine conditions will need to focus on the quality of drilling and blasting to minimise unnecessary waste rock excavation to keep costs at an acceptable level. In addition, increased demand for improved safety and operator ergonomics will set greater demands on original equipment manufacturers of mining equipment. Finally, difficulties finding a skilled and experienced workforce, particularly in remote mine locations, have already negatively impacted mines’ ability to achieve high productivity and low operating costs.This paper introduces techniques and shares practical experiences in increasing productivity and reducing the costs of excavation in underground face drilling. The paper uses Sandvik’s new DD422i automated mining jumbo as an example of the type of equipment needed to deliver the features and corresponding benefits for future mine development. The foundation of effective leadership is communication. You can have all the leadership theories, models and training you want, but in the end it is all about leaders talking to, listening to and understanding the point of view of those below and above them.The foundation of effective safety is peoples’ behaviours. Every incident, every near miss and every safe act comes down to what one person does and how that affects themselves and others. We tend to focus these behavioural considerations on the people at the ‘coal face’, those most in harm’s way. But it is the individual behaviours of everyone in the organisation, particularly those at the top, which are just as (if not more) important. The foundation of effective safety leadership in the mining industry is that it starts at the top, with the individual behaviours of leaders. The behaviours of each and every leader will be reflected in their teams. And where their teams are made up of leaders, these leaders will pass these behaviours on to their teams and so on. It’s the sum total of what people see their leaders do and what they do as a result, that creates the ‘culture’ of the business – and it’s this culture that makes or breaks how safely people work.

This paper presents a rationale for selecting appropriate support elements which combine to form a support system to maintain stability in mines subjected to both strainburst and the shaking that occurs from fault slip. The overall approach was developed during the 'case for safety' study undertaken to allow the then Beaconsfield Gold mine (now Tasmania mine) to resume development and production after the 25 April 2006 ground-fall and fatality that received worldwide publicity. Issues of the sometimes competing requirements of support element performance during dynamic loading are discussed and the need for support flexibility is contrasted with the usual high support element stiffness required when these are used to reinforce rock masses. An example is presented to show the steps and technical details required to design each component of a support system to counter the de-stabilising effects of seismicity.

Visual computing opens the design process to a wider audience and allows rapid communication of mine plans to all stakeholders. The integration of software and hardware technologies that take advantage of a graphical environment will continue to improve both long-term and short-term mine design (Figure 1). A good design must be adaptive to respond to decision changes as the mine develops and more information becomes available. The constraints on mine design predicate careful analysis in order to operate the mine as efficiently and safely as possible.Continuous improvement in mining is assured by developing innovative technologies that target mine survey, drill and blast, modelling, short-term design and pit and stope optimisers. The design life of a mine has to be sufficiently long to ensure the mine is commercially successful, justifying the high start-up capital costs. Being able to execute a plan so that it honours the design realises the rewards of computerised mine planning and the long-term investment in data acquisition.

Australia as a leading producer of mineral sands has also occupied a leading position in many areas of research'in the processing and applications of these minerals. Research in upgrading ilmenite to produce synthetic rutile has resulted in the develop- ment of many processes, e.g,., Becher, Murso, Chlorine Technology, and ICI processes. Studies on the reducibility of ilmenites, aqueous leaching of reduced ilmenites, Fe-Ti-O system, leachability of natural and treated ilmenites in hydrochloric acid and selective chlorination of iron from ilmenites have been carried out in order to develop and improve the efficiency of the above processes. While research on the processing of zircon sand to produce high purity (99.99% ZrO2 zirconia powder and zirconium chemicals started only recently, research by CSIRO in the early 1970s led to the discovery of the phenomenon of transformation toughening in partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) ceramics. Australia, with very significant resources of lanthanide-containing ores, pro- duces substantial quantities of monazite each year but research in processing and appli- cations of rare earths was neglected in recent years in this country. However, research to improve processes for the recovery of rare earths is now under way and studies on the production and testing of Nd-B-Fe magnets which are 1.5-2 times stronger than the strongest magnets (Sm-Co) currently available, have also commenced.' An overview of the research in the pro- cessing and applications of mineral sands during the last two decades in Australia and its implications for the industry are pre- sented in the paper.

DeGrussa Copper Mine, resource status 10.2 Mt at 5.7 per cent Cu, 2.1 g/t Au (Sandfire Resources, 2013), commenced concentrate production through its 1.5 Mt/a conventional copper flotation processing plant in September 2012. Geometallurgical assessment during the feasibility study identified potential process-critical ore factors that required further investigation to determine potential impact on processing. Ore characterisation and metallurgical processing performance test work of ore types ensued and subsequently, the first quantitative DeGrussa geometallurgy model was born. Now one year into steady state production, the geometallurgical program has evolved significantly from its infancy and provides valuable insight into ore characterisation and behaviour in the processing plant. The Sao Chico gold project is located on the Tocantinzinho trend which is the most mineralised zone in the Tapajos Mineral Field of Brazil (see Figure 1). The Tapajos goldfi eld was the site of the biggest gold rush in Brazilian history in the late 1970s and 1980s when approximately 500 000 garimpeiros (artisanal miners) rushed to the area to exploit extensive areas of newly discovered alluvial gold. Approximately 20 - 30 million ounces of gold were produced from these operations before the easily won alluvial gold deposits were largely depleted. The Tapajos region has had little exploration by modern exploration methods compared to any other equivalent gold fields in the world. The gold occurs in sulfide veins developed in shear zones within Proterozoic granites. Gold grades vary from approximately 15 g/t in the hard rock veins, to up to several ounces per tonne in the supergene weathered upper portions of the veins. Goldbearing vein zones in the weathered profile are free digging. In addition, tailings dumps from previous mining operations contain gold grades of approximately 1 g/t. Metallurgical test work conducted to date indicates that gold recoveries of at least 70 per cent can be achieved via gravity concentration. Gold Anomaly, via its 100 per cent owned Brazilian subsidiary, Gold Aura Do Brasil Mineracao Ltda (GOAB), plans to mine the tailings and weathered vein material by open cut methods to generate a quick cash fl ow and to provide a better understanding of the mineralisation as part of a feasibility study for mining the underlying sulfide zone mineralisation (see Figure 2). Mining will utilise locally hired excavators and trucks and ramp up to a rate of 100 tonnes per day. To treat the gold-bearing material, GOAB has purchased an integrated 'state of the art' gravity concentration processing plant from Gekko Systems of Australia. The processing plant includes a scrubber for clay and oversize removal, coarse gold gravity separation via an inline pressure jig and an inline spinner; and fine gold gravity separation via a Falcon Concentrator. Incidents that trap miners in underground mines have serious consequences for the miners and the mine operators involved. It is of utmost importance that mine operators utilise all available tools when trying to locate and rescue trapped miners. From testing conducted at underground hard rock mines, Cumming-Potvin et al (2013) found that pre-existing microseismic monitoring systems, which are routinely used for seismic risk management, have the potential to be used for detecting and locating trapped miners.This paper reflects on the Anzac Day seismic event that trapped two miners at Tasmania Mine, Beaconsfield, on 25 April 2006. The Anzac Day event occurred at 2123 on a Tuesday evening. Rescuers were unable to confirm that the trapped miners had survived until 1930 on Sunday evening. It is not possible to speculate on how the rescue operation may have been different had the technology to use the microseismic monitoring system for the purpose of detecting the trapped miners been available. However, it almost certainly would have been different. The recent research project has demonstrated that knowing the fate of the Beaconsfield miners might have been achievable up to 100 hours earlier than was the case in 2006. That knowledge would have been invaluable to the rescue effort.By examining the seismic array at the Tasmania Mine, the reliability of detection over the working levels of the mine could be quantified. Had the methodology been available, adding six additional sensors (at a cost of $40 000), would have been sufficient to increase the likelihood of detection to greater than 90 per cent in the working levels of the mine. The link between geostatistics and Theory of Sampling (TOS) is examined again in view of new findings made while trying to compare predicted sampling variances and estimated grades (using geostatistics) on the same material, and this provides an important consistency requirement whenever calculations are made that involve both theories in a comparative way. HukkiÆs law is an empirical law, which does not take into account several events of energy loss during the fragmentation processes. Since experimental results are very difficult to obtain, for a large range of fragment sizes, the verification of the law is very difficult. The relation between fractures and fragmentation processes with fractal geometry was proposed some decades ago. Empirical laws known in this context show basic features of fractal geometry, mainly self-affinity and power law behaviour. Thus, in this work a model was developed to simulate the fragmentation process and to check the relation between energy consumption and fragment sizes. The model is represented on a regular lattice. Links can represent pathways for fracture processes. The events of fragmentation have energy given by a probability distribution function. In the model there is no mass loss. Propagation of fractures occurs as self-avoiding random walks on the regular lattice.

For more than four decades, rehabilitated lands in the Bowen Basin have been planted with buffel grass (Cenchrus Ciliaris), which is often used to provide rapid, stabilising and erosion reducing cover to reshaped landforms (Erskine and Fletcher, 2013; Harwood, Hacker and Mott, 1999; Grigg, Shelton and Mullen, 2000; Naidu et al, 1997). Historically introduced to Central Queensland and encouraged by pastoralists in the early 1900s (Humphreys, 1967), the species has been extensively used by mine managers in seeding mixes (Coaldrake and Russell, 1970; Edye, 1975), and the invasive nature of the grass has led to the monodominance in rehabilitated areas of semi-arid Central Queensland. With 40 open cut coalmines in Central Queensland (Department of Natural Resources and Mines, 2015), a considerable amount of land is either disturbed mine footprint (156 200 ha) or rehabilitated (29 200 ha) (Dale, 2015), and the bulk of rehabilitation consists of relatively young (<30-year-old) developing ecosystems, with demonstrated biomass fuel loads up to 20 t/ha (Grigg, Shelton and Mullen, 2000).Uncontrolled fire poses a significant risk to rehabilitated landforms that are located in close proximity to mining infrastructure, neighbouring communities, open pits with exposed flammable coal seams and flammable stockpiled coal resource. Mine lease holders in Queensland have the added responsibility of managing and protecting any endangered regional ecosystem communities, and flora and fauna listed federally under the Environment Protection Biodiversity and Conservation Act 1999 or the State Vegetation Management Act 1999; as well as, any culturally significant sites such as scar trees or middens that are found on-site. Additionally, uncontrolled fire in rehabilitated landscapes poses a significant risk to mine site closure goals, with the potential to create altered states and stalled ecological trajectories (Grant, 2006). The Iron Road Limited Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) area, located on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, covers extensive Archaean iron formations that occur as coarse-grained magnetite bearing gneiss. The cumulative strike length, estimated from aeromagnetic data, is at least 95 km.The project is located in a grain growing area 185 km west of the existing iron ore and steel making operations of OneSteel at Whyalla. A narrow gauge railway built to transport agricultural products to the deep-water port of Port Lincoln, 175 km to the south, traverses the project area. A number of well-serviced rural townships are located nearby. Current activities include resource expansion drilling, extensive metallurgical test work, community consultation and a Prefeasibility Study (PFS) that commenced in April 2010.The PFS has encompassed the Central Eyre Iron Project, comprising the three significant iron occurrences (Warramboo, Kopi and Hambidge) and was completed in early 2011. Extensive test work programs and metallurgical modelling confirmed viable process options for the project, using simple off the shelf processing technology.Preconcentration by coarse cobbing yielded promising results, and is the key to reducing not only the capital expenditure but also the operating cost, in particular the power cost, which is the highest operating cost component of a magnetite benefi ciation plant. The ore is also amendable to high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) processing. This offers a potential for further reduction of the energy requirements.Test work also confirmed that a high grade blast furnace quality concentrate (~68 per cent Fe) can be produced at a relatively coarse grind (P80 106 µm).

Queensland Pacific Metals (QPM) is developing its flagship Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) facility to produce nickel and cobalt sulfates from imported high-grade nickel laterite ore for nickel-cobalt-aluminium and nickel-cobalt-manganese Li-ion batteries. The TECH facility is expected to use a patented leaching, recovery and recycling process called the DNi Process™. It uses the nitric acid leaching process for extracting nickel, cobalt and other valuable metals from laterite ore. Apart from the nickel and cobalt sulfates, the TECH Project will also produce high purity alumina, hematite (~640 ktpa) and other by-products. The hematite by-product precipitated from the DNi Process™ (hematite precipitate hereafter), is high in Fe and particularly low in impurities. QPM is working to identify potential applications for these high-purity by-products to generate additional revenue and to achieve its zero-waste ambition. As such, QPM has engaged CSIRO to evaluate various agglomeration options to produce low-cost, hematitic products suitable as ironmaking feed materials. This paper will first reveal the unique characteristics of the hematite precipitate arising from the TECH Project and then examine the sintering and pelletising processes for preparing the hematite precipitate as an ironmaking feed.

Determination of the mineralogical location (deportment) of minor and trace elements (including credit and penalty elements) in base metal concentrates can indicate whether further processing is likely to (a) reduce the levels of the penalty elements, and/or (b) direct selected elements into other plant products, thereby increasing current concentrate grade or increasing payment for credit elements. To determine the deportment of elements requires knowledge of the proportions of the minerals present and their individual element contents. In addition, knowledge of the liberation and locking is important, as this can affect any possible further processing. Mineral proportions can be determined by a variety of methods including chemical analysis, point-counting, area-counting, QEM*SEM, image analysis and mineral separation. In the case of a Broken Hill zinc concentrate, several of these methods were used and gave consistent results.

Two case studies are presented in this paper. The first one discusses a roller compacted concrete water supply dam that was constructed in El Mauro in Chile to provide water for agriculture activities downstream of a copper mine during the dry season. The 23 m high dam used a bituminous geomembrane (BGM) as the low permeability upstream facing element on the dam to control seepage through the dam. This is the first time that a BGM has been used in this application. A deep cut-off trench was used to control seepage beneath the dam and through the abutments. This paper briefly presents the design of the dam, including selection of the concrete mix and maximum aggregate size that the use of the Coletanche BGM allowed, and provides details of the construction, quality control and assurance of the installation of the BGM. An ultrasonic apparatus was used as part of the quality control on the BGM seams.The second case study discusses a tailings dam in Cerro Lindo, Peru (near Chincha), where a watertight BGM was installed on the upstream face. Results are presented of the survey done by a consultant on the behaviour of the dam and in particular of the BGM following an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 in Chincha close to the site. The geographic imperative of ore systems leaves mining, more so than virtually any other aspect of modern industry, heavily dependent on obtaining and maintaining social licence to operate. A prospective miner cannot arbitrarily walk away from a deposit in search of more favourable community perceptions – concentrations of mineral endowment represent highly specific and fixed elements of the landscape, and their development and extraction thus requires the acceptance and trust of a specific network of landholders and stakeholders, sometimes with diverse and even competing interests in the development and use of the local environment. Weakness or absence of such social licence can bring added costs and complexity to developing and operating a mine – and in extreme cases even result in project failure. The Dugald River lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 60 km north-west of Cloncurry and 87 km north-east of Mount Isa. The development project is expected to turn operational in 2018. The resource is estimated to contain 61.1 Mt at 12.6 per cent zinc, 1.9 per cent lead and 34 g/t silver, with a projected mine life of 25 years. The evolution from exploration project to development project has presented multiple challenges for the technical team. Understanding and modelling the structural complexity of the deposit has been one of these challenges.Historically fault zones were logged as a lithology, with structural measurements recorded in a separate database table. When underground drill programs and development commenced in late 2012, it was recognised the deposit was more structurally complex than had been modelled. The extensive number of fault zone lithologies in core logging, made it difficult to identify fault trends and model faults in 3D software packages.In 2014, a structural project was conducted to produce a fault model for the deposit. The project highlighted that by logging the faults as a lithology, a shortage of fault characteristics was being recorded. Additionally, structural information could not be filtered to identify different fault sets due to the lack of information available to filter on. One of the major outcomes of the study was to change the methodology for the structural logging of drill core.Faults are now logged in a separate structural log. The structural log collects two types of information: interval data and point data. The interval data represents the damage zone of the fault in the surrounding rock and the point data the plane of movement for the fault. The faults are further characterised by their intensity on a scale of one to five, the type of fault structure (fault breccia, fault vein etc), the minerals present on the fault surface and structural measurements when available.The new data set allows fault data to be filtered based on fault characteristics, making implicit and explicit modelling of the faults more timely and accurate. The data set can be used to produce fault wireframes as single surfaces from the point data or hanging wall and footwall surfaces from the interval data. Flotation is one of the main concentration processes to purify kaolin clay via the removal of naturally occurring impurity minerals containing Ti and Fe. Currently, there are two types of collector chemistries used in the industry to float coloured impurity minerals. These are traditional tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and specialty hydroxamate (AHX) based collectors. AHX based collectors have long been known to be the most selective collectors to float Ti and Fe based coloured impurity minerals (CIMs) as compared to TOFA based systems. AHX based collectors provide, not only improved selectivity and simplified process, but also more importantly, make it possible to treat certain kaolin resources that do not respond to standard TOFA systems. However, the relatively higher cost of straight AHX collectors has restricted broader application of these collectors in kaolin clay and other oxide flotation applications for a long time. Recent technological advancements, in both making and formulating AHX products more economically, increased the usage of these collectors in kaolin applications. Modified AHX products offer more economical alternatives and process options to provide high purity kaolin clay products for specialty applications based on cost-performance criteria. In this paper, the flotation performance of a series of newly developed AHX formulations is provided along with the characteristics of AHX flotation in general. In addition, flotation performance of earlier AHX collectors is provided based on published literature as background data.
