Molten salt reactor (MSR) is a promising advanced reactor system aiming to the transmutation of minor actinides such as americium in order to reduce the inventory of ultimate nuclear waste. The fuel is a molten salt in which actinides are homogeneously dissolved in the liquid phase. A chloride salt may be retained for this concept, as it provides low melting point, high solubility of actinides, harder neutron spectrum. To avoid corrosion and precipitation issues, molten salt composition has to be carefully controlled with impurity content as low as possible. Obtaining pure actinide chlorides without contaminants such as oxide, oxychloride, hydroxide and water is still a challenge. To prepare actinide-bearing salt, the chlorination of actinides oxides was investigated in an unstirred reactor under flowing gas as solid-gas reaction. The carbochlorination of PuO2 were performed in the temperature range of 600 to 800°C with chlorine gas as a chlorinating agent and the presence of solid carbon. PuCl3 was successfully synthesised by this method and characterised by X-ray diffraction measurements but some impurities such as oxide phase remain inside the formed product. Refinements of anhydrous and hydrated PuCl3 phases by Le Bail method were also performed for crystalline materials definition. Conversion mainly depends on the chlorinating temperature and the contact between the oxide and the chlorinating agent. A conversion value of 70–80 per cent was achieved at 700°C from PuO2 with quite high specific surface area. The conversion rate was not improved with increasing the chlorination time. The volatilisation of Pu was observed during the carbochlorination experiments. To avoid a loss of Pu caused by sublimation, the chlorination temperature should be limited to 650°C despite that the conversion of PuO2 to PuCl3 was enhanced by increasing temperature. Both carbochlorination and hydrochlorination of AmO2 were also carried out leading to the formation of AmCl3. These first results suggest that americium oxide was chlorinated more readily than plutonium oxide. The purity of produced PuCl3 and AmCl3 still deserves further investigations.

The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column, 1.42 m diameter by 9.5 m high, was installed as a re-recleaner unit at the Northam Platinum LtdÆs UG 2 plant in South Africa. The paper also evaluates the pilot plant data prior to the industrial size column installation as well as the accuracy of scale up from pilot to full-scale operation. Since the installation of the PrepQuip flotation column, the final concentrate upgrade ratio improved from 83 to 105, the 3PGM+Auå recovery improved from 79.7 per cent to 81 per cent and the Cr2O3 content in the final concentrate decreased from five per cent to 2.8 per cent. The upgrade ratio can be improved to 125 with an overall 3PGM+Au recovery of 80 per cent. Conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells achieved only 74 per cent recovery at an upgrade ratio of 125.

With the burgeoning opportunities for new gold mines to be developed the opportunity now exists for a reassessment of the optimal processing path for these gold ores. Projects have traditionally followed the path of whole ore cyanidation with either Carbon In Pulp (CIP), Carbon In Leach (CIL) or Merrill Crowe. The challenge ahead is whether these traditional processing methods are the best option for stakeholders, or to go beyond CIP and use a combination of currently available technologies that can be used to provide gold recovery at a significantly reduced capital cost and minimal deleterious impact on the environment. Either stand alone or combinations of gravity concentration and flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. Treatment of a gravity/flotation concentrate by intensive cyanidation may be processed by the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. The advantages of the technology combining gravity/flotation followed by intensive cyanidation are significantly reduced capital costs; improved safety due to reduced cyanide inventories; the majority of tailings un-contaminated by cyanide; less energy required due to an opportunity for an increase in grind size û reducing green house gas emissions; detoxification of concentrate tailings can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.

The Prominent Hill copper-gold deposit is located approximately 150 km north west of Olympic Dam, on the southern margin of the Mount Woods Inlier in South Australia. Its discovery in November 2001 resulted from the application of a geological model developed from geological, geophysical and petrophysical data pertaining to the Olympic Dam deposit. The discovery has dispelled the notion the Olympic Dam may be unique, and that another deposit like it is unlikely to be found. The Prominent Hill mineralisation is hosted by haematite-matrix hydrothermal breccias, which have suffered extensive iron-sericite-silica alteration and overprinting. Copper, gold, barium, fluorine, uranium, cerium and lanthanum are all intrinsically associated with the hydrothermal iron. Breccias intrude an east-west striking, fault-controlled sedimentary succession, which is flanked to both the south and north by volcanic complexes. Many similarities between Prominent Hill and Olympic Dam are documented including geological setting, mineralogy, breccia styles, and alteration. Differences relate largely to the nature of the immediate host rocks. The similarities and difference provide key data for improving exploration models for this style of iron oxide copper-gold deposit, both within the Gawler Craton as well as globally.

The cloud transform simulation is a technique used to generate realisations of correlated attributes. The principle of this technique is to partition the scatter diagram between the input attributes into several interval classes and derive for each class a cumulative distribution function (CDF) using only the data pairs of the scatter diagram in that class. The simulation then proceeds like a traditional Monte Carlo simulation but using the derived CDF in each class.The cloud transform simulation has the advantage of being a simple and fast technique that is able to reproduce the uncertainty in the relationship between the two input attributes regardless of whether the relationship is linear or not. However, the technique has three major drawbacks. First, the number of classes has an impact on final simulated results and there is not a robust approach to define such number. Second, simulated results exhibit some saw tooth variations that are unrealistic and third the reproduction of the spatial continuity of the simulated attribute is not guaranteed.This paper presents the use of the quantile regression approach in order to overcome the first two disadvantages of the cloud transform simulation. Details of the technique and how it can be coupled with the cloud transform simulation are presented along with a real case study.

The Sishen iron-ore-mine produces 3 pro= ducts with size gradings of 25 to 8 mm, 11 to 5 mm and 5 to 0,2 mm and has a product capacity of 20 Mtpa. Ore is produced at an average Fe content of 66,2 % Fe for the two coarser pro= ducts and an average of 65,3 % Fe for the fine ore product. Three stage crushing is practised to re= duce the run-of-mine ore to -90 mm after which it is screened into five different size frac= tions of which four are heavy media beneficiated in static baths and cyclones and the fifth frac= tion discarded to slimes dams. A final three stage crushing and screening process is employed to produce the final three Products which are homogenized by means of blen=ding systems nrinr to despatch.

The high intensity zone within the Jameson Cell is the downcomer. It is largely external and separated from the flotation tank. This, together with operation of the downcomer under vacuum, rather than at elevated pressure and the absence of moving parts, allows ready access to the high intensity zone for measurement and analysis. Experimentation was conducted allowing measurements of recovery for residence times of between 20 milliseconds and ten seconds within the downcomer of a Jameson Cell. The affect of aeration rate on the recovery of different particle sizes was also studied.

Hidden under picturesque Bemic Lake, in Canada's eastern Manitoba, lies a highly fractionated pegmatite orebody, hosting a unique assemblage of minerals. Accidentally discovered in 1929, the orebody had a brief history as a tin producer, but it is now mined by Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Ltd. (TANCO), for its cesium, lithium, rubidium and tantalum bearing minerals. The mine also has potential for mbidium-feldspar, amblygonite, gallium rich mica, and quartz production. This paper describes the geology of the orebody, and its mining and processing. Selective, concurrent, mining and milling of the various products necessitates a high degree of planning and control, and these aspects are also discussed. The introduction of Quality Control and SPC are discussed, for such are the keys to excellence.

The Lady Loretta lead-zinc-silver mineral isation of north-west Queensland was discovered first by Placer geologists in 1968 as a result of a geochemical soil survey. The stratigraphic position, mineralisation and rock associations of the deposit are very similar to those of the Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver orebodies. Aspects of the exploration history, geo- chemistry and structural geology of the Lady Loretta deposit, are discussed. A geometric model of the Ore Horizon is given.

The behaviour of cationic and anionic collector mixtures in the feldspar-quartz flotation system has been investigated througl conductivity, surface tension, zeta-potential and flotation studies. Tht results show the formation of molecular complexes between oppositel; charged collector ions through charge neutralisation. The molecular complexes are found to have a higher surface activity than the individua components. The mole ratio of the mixed composition is found to have, significant effect on flotation. The need to recover metals from low grade deposits, old tailings, etc., combined with improvements in equipment design and the development of new extractants, has resulted in solvent extraction (SX) metal recovery reaching new importance (Webster & Ferron, 1993). The basic principle of solvent extraction is the use of an equilibrium system in which a metal ion is transferred from an aqueous phase into an organic phase, (Equation 1), (Ritcey, 1984). M + E ME . (1) The organic extractant (E) is usually specific for a certain metal ion (M) and forms a metal complex in the organic phase, leaving the impurities behind in the aqueous phase. To recover the metal, the equilibrium is reversed and the metal ion is transferred back from the organic to another aqueous phase in a process called stripping. The metal is then recovered from the aqueous strip solution, usually by electrowinning.

The competitive coal market has required coal producers to put more effort into coal quality control. Successful quality control requires a good estimation of the in situ coal quality as well as a good estimation of the probable fluctuation of the in situ coal quality during production. Geostatistics offers a very promising way to meet this requirement. A geostatistical approach toward the coal quality control problem is presented. Two models, the prediction model and the conditional simulation model, have been developed for coal quality data from two large export coal mines in central Queensland, Australia. The mine planning and scheduling aspects based on this and other potential applications of the models are addressed.

Australia has been an important producer of zinc minerals and metal for many years.Late in the last century Edgar A. Ashcroft, a versatile and enterprising electrical engineer proposed the treatment of zinc rich ores by roasting, followed by leaching to extract zinc, purification of the solution and electrolysis of the purified solution to produce zinc. Residues from the leaching operation were to be smelted in a lead blast furnace to recover lead, silver and gold.Ashcroft (1897-98) and (1898) has.given us a most interesting record of the attempts made at the Sulphide Corporation's plant at Cockle Creek near Newcastle, NSW, to put his ideas into practice. In spite of the best efforts of all concerned, including the use of electrolysis of aqueous chlorides and sulphates, zinc could not be deposited consistently and the project failed although lead smelting continued until 1922 (Woodward, 1965, p. 158). Based on later experience with Broken Hill materials the presence of undetected cobalt in the solutions was the likely cause of the inability to deposit zinc (Kirk and Othmer, 1956).

The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in and areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.

Uncertainty and debate currently pervade the mining industry in New Zealand. The operational uncertainties, whether external (eg gold prices, the exchange rate), or internal (eg coal expansion difficulties), are large. In addition, many wider factors which influence mining are in a state of flux. State Coal Mines, the operating branch of the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy I may be made a state corporation, with the remaining Mines Division functions being revamped. The agencies administering environmental legislation are to be restructured. Mining legislation amendments have been proposed and then dropped, and the area is now to be reviewed (The Press, 31 July 1985). Some mining licences have been withdrawn, and become the subject of heated debate in the community (The Press, 19 July 1985, and subsequent letters to the editor).

This paper proposes an approach to determine the influence of non-ideal detonation characteristics related to the charge diameter, explosive type and confinement conditions on the available shock energy of ANFO and a representative chemically-sensitised (gassed) emulsion. The proposed degrees of non-ideality of the two different blasting agents are indicated by the Gurney ratios, determined from existing cylinder expansion testing data. The influence of the non-ideal detonation properties on blast design and performance are also compared using a series of theoretical, equal powder factor open pit blasting patterns with hole diameters ranging from 102 mm to 270 mm. The non-ideal shock energy factor (NSEF), which is the available shock energy per tonne of blasted material (MJ/t), is used to compare the different blasting patterns as charged with either ANFO or the gassed emulsion of equal charge density (0.85 g/cm3). The intended purpose of this investigation is to provide explosive users with an approach to compare different explosive types or charge diameters in the absence of dedicated non-ideal detonation modelling, which is generally not available to explosives users.The results of the comparisons suggest that at low charge densities, the example gassed emulsion displays a higher velocity of detonation (VOD) than ANFO in smaller charge diameters but similar degrees of non-ideality (based on proposed Gurney ratios). The results also suggest that the confined, non-ideal gassed emulsion VOD at hole diameters greater than 270 mm can be less than ANFO due to the low density effects on the emulsion matrix. The differences in non-ideal detonation properties and Gurney ratios between the ANFO and gassed emulsion resulted in gassed emulsion NSEF values ranging from 15 per cent lower to 65 per cent higher than ANFO for equal powder-factor patterns in blasthole diameters from 102 mm to 270 mm.

Construction and commissioning of the Nova Copper-Nickel project of Independence Group was completed in late 2016. The plant is in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, about 120km east of Norseman and produces separate Copper and Nickel concentrates. Since the early feasibility phases of the project, the importance of automation and control was recognised and planned for to ensure the plant performance meets the design expectations. The site is well equipped with common as well as advanced instrumentation. It currently boasts the largest number of Blue Cube MQi (mineral quantifier inline) slurry grade analysers on a single plant worldwide. It was also decided that 25 Blue Cube TempoTracks would be installed on the flotation cells. The TempoTracks provide information on froth height and velocity, hence giving continuous, quantitative measurements of the froth that is pulled off each cell, rather than relying on infrequent, subjective visual inspections.The Nova concentrator consists of a differential flotation circuit whereby copper bearing mineral are selectively floated prior to nickel flotation. It is imperative that losses of copper to the nickel circuit, and vice versa, are minimised. The plant metallurgical team and Process IQ collaborated to develop and implement the advanced control strategy for the plant. This paper focusses on the optimisation of the copper concentrate that is pulled off the copper rougher and scavengers. This strategy was made possible by the additional measurements listed above. The control optimisation of the copper rougher and copper rougher scavenger circuit was implemented during August 2017 on the StarCSTM advanced control platform. It continuously optimises the level and air setpoints. The control philosophy incorporates several notable techniques which include: a variable mass pull target that is a function of the quantity and grade of material entering the circuit, integrated compensation to prevent inventory build-up in cells, balancing of the froth velocity over the lip of each cell to adaptive, modular system usage and advanced error handling. The satisfactory ventilation of an extensive coal mine is a subject which requires continual attention from all concerned.It must be remembered that a colliery contains many miles of workings, extending in all directions and throughout which noxious gases may be given off either naturally or by oxidation of the coal; fumes from explosives will be produced, dust will be gathered and carried in suspension, and water will be evaporated, producing a high humidity. Hence a considerable quantity of air in movement must be available to provide sufficient oxygen for men and horses, as well as to dilute and sweep away impurities, and maintain a tolerable degree of coolness.To maintain these conditions a modern colliery is divided up from the main ventilation shafts or adits (as the case may be) into a system of main airways, and in the working districts is further subdivided into district splits. To initiate the air movement, large centrifugal fans with a displacement capacity of up to 400,000 cu. ft. of air per minute are installed, generally in drifts off the upcast shaft, or adit, and at the return end of the ventilating circuit. These fans are thus exhausting fans and by producing a region of low density bring the heavier air at the other extremity of the circuit into movement to correct the difference in density, so far as it is not prevented by the frictional resistance of the airways. A flow of air is thus established, and it is obvious that to enable this volume of air to be as great as possible, the frictional resistance of the mine airways should be maintained at the lowest practicable figure. To this end, main airways should be as large as possible, have sides as smooth as practicable, and be straight, any necessary bends being of large radius.REQUIREMENTS OF THE VENTILATION SYSTEMThe New South Wales Coal Mines Regulation Act contains stringent provisions on requirements of the ventilation system. The great variety of geological conditions in French coal deposits has obliged the industry to develop different thick seam mining methods. In very steep seams in a dense deposit where stowing is necessary to avoid spontaneous combustion, surface subsidence and water problems, a rising horizontal slice method is used, the coal being hard enough and the seams regular (Lorraine). In very thick and irregular steep seams where the stowing is not necessary, a sub-level horizontal slicing is used; a third method has to be used in Dauphine.

New opportunities for miners are beginning to appear through new discoveries, improved knowledge and access to vast unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf. Recent discoveries of undersea hydrothermal deposits show evidence of high-grade mineralisation, although in many instances the extent of the resource is still unknown. The promise and the difficulties of undersea mining have been evident since attempts were first made to mine manganese nodules in the 1960s. The physical nature of the undersea resource is a key influence on its mining potential; and environmental issues will also become increasingly important. This paper explores these issues and concludes with a description of the immediate to medium term applied research required to develop this industry and the spin off that such research can provide.
