Research into the dynamic properties of ground support elements continues to grow at a global level, given the increasing importance of this field of application within underground hard rock mining. Measuring the mechanical response of such elements under the rapid onset of simulated rock burst loads forms the basis for this experimental work, typically utilising gravitational drop testing methods. This field of research is fundamentally driven by an increasing need for dynamic performance data, given the constant evolution of rock bolting product designs, materials selection, combination testing and specific application needs based on ground types and loading scenarios. A smaller number of globally recognised dynamic test facilities have predominantly lead research within this arena, typically in association with academic institutes, larger industry groups and government research institutes. However, due to the increasing requirement for dynamic performance data, additional facilities have now emerged in order to satisfy the overall demand for test work. These newer facilities are more typically associated with suppliers to the underground hard rock industry, with experimental designs looking to replicate, at least in part, the work of the primary facilities. For standardisation, repeatability and calibration purposes, the cross validation of test data between primary and secondary facilities becomes an obvious and important consideration across this field of research. This paper outlines the development of a new dynamic drop test facility for testing rock bolts, including the structural design and associated high speed data capture system. Based on the utilisation of identical bolt types, material grades, anchoring systems and decoupled ‘free-lengths’, comparative data has been generated to provide cross validation of the new test facility against data generated by a globally recognised primary facility. The cross validation of data provides increasing confidence in the repeatability and accuracy of the new facility as activity continues towards the provision of further experimental test work.

The Abra mineralized body is regarded as a significant new style of mineralization for its environment. It is a blind polymetallic deposit, located in the Bangemall Basin of Western Australia. It was discovered by Geopeko in 1981 by diamond drilling a coincident magnetic gravity target, which revealed a large low grade epithermal Fe-Ba-Pb-Ag-Cu-(AuW) deposit, hosted by chemogenic and clastic sedimentary rocks, overlain by 200-500 m of clastic sedimentary rocks, of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralization occurs as an upper stratabound phase, and a lower vein "stringer" style phase within a pervasive chlorite alteration envelope.

Universal Resources Ltd has acquired a large portfolio of high quality exploration projects in two of Australia's most prospective regions for base and precious metal exploration: the Mt Isa Inlier (the Mt Isa-Cloncurry area) of North West Queensland, and the southern Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales. Drilling techniques commonly employed by the company for mineral exploration include diamond core drilling, air core drilling, reverse circulation (RC) drilling, and rotary air blast (RAB) drilling. Using examples from these two regions, each drilling technique is briefly described and compared, with particular reference to the specific advantages and disadvantages of each method for: sampling size, sample representivity, recovery, integrity and potential contamination. The applicability and implications of the different drilling techniques described for subsequent mineralogical and metallurgical evaluation work are discussed.

With the societal desire and drive towards low carbon energy sources, there is a growing awareness of the important role that minerals and metals will play with renewable energy technologies. Copper is an essential metal for technologies that generate energy from renewable sources, in particular for wind and solar photovoltaic energy systems. A recent report (Arrobas et al., 2017) estimated that the median increase in copper demand through to 2050 for wind technologies and for solar photovoltaics would need to be 250% and 300% respectively to meet the goal of a 2°C global temperature increase scenario compared with a 6°C global increase, which is largely an extension of current trends (IEA, 2018). The aim of this extended abstract is to demonstrate with the necessary increase in copper production for renewable energy technologies that sound sustainability performance across the global copper value chain is to the benefit of government, society and industry.CITATION:Corder, G D and Bangerter, P J, 2018. A common problem faced by underground mining operations around the world is airborne dust sourced from production and auxiliary processes. In most underground mining methods, air is generally directed through a limited number of drives and is thus more effective at carrying dust away from operational areas quickly. In a block caving operation, there are a number of ways to set up ventilation systems. In its simplest form the air is entering the extraction level through access drives and then split over the number of extraction drives—based on the pressure differences—without being regulated. This is the case at Northparkes Mines. Larger operations and panel caves most often utilise designated ventilation levels and ventilation raises with some form of regulation to ensure adequate airflow to all work areas.Northparkes Mines utilise electric loaders as a productive means to transport ore to the run-of-mine (ROM) bin, which have the added advantage of allowing the mine to require less airflow through the extraction drives as dilution of exhaust gases is no longer required. Dust was controlled during the operational period of the previous two block caves by using water spray bars in each of the drawpoints, which were seen as the main source of dust. These drawpoint spray bars only wet the surface of muck piles and require a lot of water to achieve an effect on the overall air quality. The drawpoint sprays can be remotely operated from mine control, whenever a loader is sent to bog a particular drawpoint. A significant amount of airborne dust is also generated during loading as rilling of material occurs, with further dust being generated during tramming and dumping activities as only limited mixing of the water and ore occurs. The water sprays are ineffective at precipitating dust that has already become airborne.When built, the currently operational E48 cave was fitted with drawpoint water sprays. As the cave is in a different orebody with higher silica content, the water sprays were not able to keep airborne dust and thus silica quantities under control efficiently. It was therefore necessary to find more sustainable solutions. The problem was further intensified by the concurrent load-haul-dump (LHD) processes across multiple extraction drives and tipping points, as well as secondary breaking, using non-explosive blasting and development activities occurring nearby.This paper describes the practical approach taken at Northparkes Mines to reduce personal dust exposure on the E48 extraction level. As the extraction level is one of the main contributors to airborne dust at the mine, it is believed that much can be learnt by focusing improvement efforts initially on this part of the mining process and later applying the effective solutions in other parts of the mine.CITATION:Vejrazka, C and Wyllie, A, 2014. Mount Isa Mines has four mining operations in Mt Isa with the X41 and Enterprise Mines producing copper and the Lead Mine and George Fisher producing lead zinc and silver. Each stream contributes ore to their respective concentrator at a feed rate and therefore metal ratio set out by the monthly schedule. Mine Planning and scheduling lead to a sales and operating plan (S&OP) and revenue projections which ultimately derives actual revenue /tonne and therefore cost/tonne. At Mount Isa, both the copper and lead/zinc streams produce ore from relatively new operations to be blended with material from more mature operations. It is critical to accurately predict the metal contribution from each operation in order to gauge the relative performance of each mine. Development mining ore contributions are estimated and reconciled, as are stope and bench sources. Performance is continually measured and assessed during extraction and grade adjustments are made to account for underbreak, overbreak and design modifications. It is critical to not understate or overstate the contribution from one operation relative to the other as this can produce a false picture of operational performance. Identifying process improvements are key to improving the business overall. Ore from the lead stream passes 17 measurement stations and two midstream reconciliation points before delivery to the heavy media plant (HMP), where the metallurgical circuit begins. From this point two concentrates are produced. A zinc concentrate for treatment off site and a lead concentrate for further on site processing. The lead smelter takes 100 per cent of Isa concentrates as well as a contribution from BHP-BillitonÆs Cannington Mine.

A number of gold processing plants in Western Australia have nickel in their ores, leading to significant levels of nickel on their loaded carbon. The presence of nickel during leaching, adsorption and elution'may have detrimental effects on cyanide consumption, carbon inventory requirements, stripping costs, electrowinning efficiencies and may contaminate the gold bullion.This paper discusses the competitive adsorption of gold and nickel cyanides onto activated carbon and investigates changes in solution parameters that may improve gold adsorption and/or inhibit nickel adsorotion.

Tahmoor Mine is located in the southern Sydney Basin 80km south-west of Sydney and produces 1.2 MT of Bulli Coal annually. Bord and pillar methods used to date will be supplemented by a longwall system. Difficult roof conditions have been experienced since mining began in 1979. A dominantly horizontal stressfield promotes shear failure in the thinly interbedded roof sequence of shales, laminites, siltstones and fine sandstones. General roof conditions and failure characteristics are related to the angle between the roadway direction and the principal horizontal stress direction. The apparent stressfield changes direction, magnitude and the ratio of principal horizontal components across the mine workings in response to both in situ and mining induced causes. Initial roof support of 5 x 2.1 m bolts per W-strap at in intervals, with mesh, was upgraded to include RSJ's in order to support areas of failed roof. This support system was inefficient and costly. A third system of support emphasizes roof reinforcement with full resin encapsulation of 2.1 m bolts in W-straps. The number of bolts per strap (6-8), extra butterfly straps and bolts, and W-strap spacing is determined for each area by expected roof and stress conditions. Intersections are pre-bolted and ribs are supported in some areas. Pillar dimensions, order of drivage and roadway width have each been altered to improve roof control. The intensity of roof deformation at the face varies from panel to panel and causes development rates to decrease to 30% of the maximum. 1. Manager, Tahmoor Mine, Tahmoor, N.S.W. 2. Roof conditions in each area of the mine are characterised and then projected to future development areas based on the relationship between stressfield orientation, relative roadway direction and face conditions. Future improvements of strata control involve defining support design parameters for the range of mine conditions already seen at Tahmoor.

The earliest discovery and mining of coal in the northern area of the Greta Coal Measures at Anvil Creek in 1862 was by William Farthing, however, some official records attribute the discovery to Thomas Frost in 1864. Frost's discovery was examined by William Keen, government examiner of coalfields, and further prospecting was carried out. This was followed by the pioneering work of C S Wilkinson, government geologist in 1884. Subsequently in 1886 C S Wilkinson entrusted a detailed survey of the coalfield to the then geological surveyor, T W Edgeworth David.The outcrop of the Greta Coal Measures around the Lochinvar dome was mapped by Edgeworth David and as soon as he reported his discovery, the Department of Mines reserved in the interests of coal mining an area of 23700 acres, which extended between what became the South Greta and Abermain No I Collieries.

The Favona Underground Project is located approximately two kilometres east of Martha Mine Open Pit in Waihi, 150 km south east of Auckland, New Zealand.   The underground reserve of 354 koz Au contained in resources of almost 600 koz lies within 600 m of the existing process plant presenting an attractive development target in a challenging environment.   The Martha Mine Open Pit is surrounded by urban housing on the north western edge of Waihi township and the Favona Underground abuts residences on the eastern edge of town. Environmental, community and social licence aspects influence project strategies as the new underground mine extends mining in a town that is planning for closure of current open pit operations in late 2006.   The Favona Underground Project has successfully passed through a detailed feasibility study, the third stage of the five stage Newmont project appraisal system. Methodologies used in the feasibility study and parallel permitting draw on a high level of stakeholder involvement to streamline the development and permitting phases.   This paper discusses the project appraisal process and design innovation required for developing an underground mine adjacent to town.

A large number of countries in the world now have some regulation for labelling the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in food. For the last ten years, ISO/TC 34/SC 16 has been providing methods, guidelines and requirements concerning the evaluation of molecular biomarkers including GMOs. This activity makes sure that stakeholders on all sides of commercial transactions are satisfied and their marketing or regulatory needs are met. Developing and maintaining a transparent, science-based environment for users of horizontal methods for molecular biomarker analysis is a high priority. Sampling and analysis of molecular biomarkers has become critically important for food and agricultural organisations developing, producing, distributing and selling genetically engineered, non-genetically engineered, identity preserved and/or organic crops and their derived products and preventing their respective destructive diseases. To aid in international harmonisation, a new work item proposal to develop an ISO type A management system standard (MSS) for organisations including laboratories using molecular biomarker analysis and sampling has been submitted to ISO/TC 34/SC 16. The purpose of this MSS is ensuring that determination of the presence, absence or quantification of a particular biomarker with a relationship to a product quality determinant, a marketing claim, a regulation or a plant pathogen is carried out under a suitable quality assurance / quality control system. This MSS will provide an overarching system to apply and manage molecular biomarker analysis and sampling for any organisation large, medium or small in a private, government or academic setting.CITATION:Sussman, M D, 2017. An investigation was carried out at Diavik Diamond Mines Inc (DDMI) to identify and quantify the mechanisms through which ammonium nitrate (AN) was entering the mine discharge water. The goal was to develop and complete an investigation of the potential AN loss mechanisms in order to assess their contribution to ammonia in the mine water system. The initial phase of the project involved the collection and analysis of blasting and water quality data that were used to determine the mechanisms by which the ammonia enters the mine water system and to establish a baseline data set for comparison with results from future trials designed to reduce AN loss. Three potential options for reducing AN loss were identified through the first phase of the project. The second phase of the project involved conducting a series of monitored trials with changes made to the drilling and blasting process. The results of these trials were compared to the baseline data set to determine if the changes introduced for the trials had reduced AN losses while producing satisfactory blast results. This paper describes the process for the collection of the baseline data, provides an analysis of the resulting data, discusses the changes made to blasting operations in order to minimise AN loss and describes the results observed subsequent to these changes.

Callie underground gold mine is part of the Newmont Tanami Operations, and is now the primary provider of ore to the Granites processing Mill. The Callie underground mine has produced in excess of 7.6 million tonnes (Mtpa) of ore, since production began in 1998, with a current production rate of 1.9 Mtpa. Callie underground uses sublevel open stoping with extraction through a combination of primary and secondary stopes. The primary stope filling strategy utilises cement aggregate fill (CAF) to allow full recovery of secondary stopes. The Callie backfill operation has had a continuous testing program in place during this time, which has resulted in a great deal of information available for post fill analysis. All CAF placement into primary stopes for Callie has been via surface boreholes and this has given Callie mine an understanding of some of the issues related to borehole design, type of linings to use depending on angle, depth and quantity of fill into stopes. Finally backfill barricades at Callie have undergone a number of changes during the time to optimise the design based on whether CAF or sand fill is used. This paper discusses the CAF backfill practices and testing methods used for backfilling operations at Callie.

The Otago Goldfield has produced approximately 8 million ounces of alluvial gold and over 2.5 million ounces of hard rock gold and is currently home to New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. In the eyes of explorers this production history makes the goldfield a good place to explore.   Modern exploration in the Otago Goldfield commenced in the late 1970s with the exploration for tungsten. However, a rapid rise of the gold price in the early 1980s saw the focus shift to the exploration for gold which lead to the discovery of the Macraes Gold Project in 1984, which since it came into production in 1990 has been New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. With the exception of the Macraes Gold Project, exploration continued in the Otago Goldfield for a further 20 years without further success.   In 2006, Glass Earth (NZ) Limited (Glass Earth) reviewed all the exploration technologies applied to the Otago region and available geological data, including the 1996 OceanaGold Helicopter Electro-Magnetic (HEM) data, and concluded that combined magnetics and HEM were able to delineate the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) which hosts the Macraes Gold Project. Unlike previous explorers who explored the Otago region in a piecemeal manner, Glass Earth opted to collect a new, region-wide dataset which could be integrated with all previous collected geological information to come up with new exploration concepts and targets. As part of this process, Glass Earth applied in mid 2006 for New ZealandÆs largest on-shore gold Prospecting Permit, PP39-322 which was subsequently granted in November 2006. In mid January 2007, Glass Earth commenced acquisition of approximately 50 000 line kilometres of HEM data, making the Otago regional aerial geophysical survey (survey) the largest aerial geophysical survey ever undertaken in New Zealand.   This paper will report on the progress of the Otago Regional aerial geophysical survey and outline some of the preliminary findings from what is still a work in progress.

There has been disappointingly little development in the understanding of the behaviour of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardised approaches in particular, are surprising in view of the æultraÆ deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. Research has recently been carried out into the occurrence of zones of extension strain in open pit slopes. This showed that very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. Results of the research will be presented for different slope heights, slope angles and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratios. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning, producing easily measurable seismicity. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. Case studies of slope failure in two open pits will be described. In both cases failure occurred æsuddenlyÆ after very limited amounts of deformation. In the first, the slope crest moved suddenly upwards and backwards over a length of more than 200 m, with associated instability. In the second, the horizontal displacement of the slope face was almost an order of magnitude greater than the vertical displacement and occurred æsuddenlyÆ. A recently installed seismic system is detecting events in a significant zone behind the slope face. Both pits were in the 200 m to 300 m depth range at the time of the occurrences.

OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena mine is one of Australia’s newest ‘greenfield’ mining deposits. It will be a 4.25 Mtpa sub level cave underground operation, with an estimated mine life of 20 years. The integration of stakeholder values to inform project development influenced the social and environmental outcomes. A Native Title Mining agreement was developed in 12 months. Project primary approval was obtained 12 months from submission, with achievable licence conditions and one public comment. The project moved from a Pre-feasibility Study in 2016 to construction in 2018. Following recent international dam failures, the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) was a focus for Government approvals and stakeholder engagement. Significant effort was made into understanding the science around potential effects, impacts and risks. A leading practice Impact Assessment Framework that identified Sources, Pathways and Receptors was applied. A process of failure mode identification and layers of protection analysis was undertaken for robust design controls at each stage, while simultaneously transitioning between downstream and upstream discharge arrangements. Participatory selection of the TSF site and design layout was critical in managing project costs and environmental constraints, and in incorporating cultural heritage constraints and technical risks.

FLSmidth (FLS) has spent the last 15 years, working with customers and engineering houses to deliver innovative improvements in crusher safety, coupled with the latest, maintenance friendly, crusher design. The key focus being to prevent service personnel from working underneath the crusher during maintenance and obviate the need for personnel to be exposed to suspended loads when performing tasks such as, main shaft installation, for example. Improvements include: full top-service capability to ensure the safest and fastest way to disassemble the crusher for maintenance purposes, which also removes the requirement for a service cart; a selfaligning main shaft which ensures remote assembly is now possible, keeping service personnel well out of harm’s way; And rotable shells, or the ability to perform relines off-station, allows for quick shell ‘swap-over’ without the downtime associated with removing, refitting and curing time associated with epoxy backing. The high flow spider improves large material entry into the crusher, reducing blockages and downtime and therefore maintains crusher capacity. Each size of crusher in the range comes with an option to increase the standard feed opening to a larger one if desired to compensate for ‘blocky’ or ‘elongated’ feed material, a common problem for Pilbara hematite iron ores. Power capability has also been increased with a maximum of 1500 kW, to match the higher throughput capacities being achieved. This due to uprated eccentric speeds and larger discharge annulus. Increased eccentric throws and mantle diameters are also now a reality, when compared to more traditional designed gyratory crushers. To keep up with the improved design features of the Mk V, digitalisation has also been upgraded to maximise performance capabilities to ensure that the most efficient reduction and throughput capacities are achieved, whilst utilising the higher powers now available as standard. Condition monitoring ensures that the crusher is at its optimum operating capability by monitoring and adjusting the crusher settings via feedback from additional sensors, ie main shaft spin, temperature and vibration. Camera monitoring capabilities are available as is an advanced oil contamination monitoring system. As a result of the above design improvements, it will be shown that the Mk V range offers benefits such as: enhanced safety features, increased availability, faster maintenance turnarounds, higher power utilisation, equivalent product size at higher throughput capacities and with Remote operation capabilities. All of which result in a gyratory crusher with higher levels of safety and a lower per tonne operating cost.

Magnesium-rich olivine is used as an additive in LKABÆs iron ore pellets in order to improve the high-temperature properties of the finished products. Olivine is only added to the pellets that are manufactured for ironmaking in the blast furnace process. The olivine comes from Minelco/LKABÆs mine at Seqi in Greenland. This dunite complex of Archean age contains about 95 - 98 per cent olivine. The grain size is typically 1 - 3 mm but much larger euhedral olivine crystals are common in the porphyritic type. The serpentinisation is absent or weak. The most common minor minerals are chromite, chlorite, talc, phlogopite, amphibole and pyroxene. The crushed olivine is transported to LKABÆs pelletising plants in Northern Sweden. After grinding, small amounts of olivine are mixed with the magnetite concentrate. The concentrate is rolled into green balls, about 10 - 14 mm in diameter. The moist green balls are transferred into the pelletising machine where the maximum temperature is about 1250¦C. The residence time in the pelletising machine is about one hour. Olivine is used in order to get pellets with better high-temperature properties. This paper deals with the olivine alteration during the pelletising process and the behaviour of magnesium following the decomposition of magnetite. The reactions are quite complex in the pellets because the physico-chemical conditions vary considerably in the process from one process step to another, and in the pellet bed from the top to the bottom. Some olivine particles in the finished product show very slight alteration, some particles are completely decomposed. The formation of the iron-rich coronas around the olivine particles is the most typical alteration. In the finished pellets the magnesium is mainly distributed between the following phases: unaltered olivine, coronas, Mg/Fe-ferrite and silicate slag.

A significant part of the reserves of the Southern Coalfield lie beneath major water storages and their impounding dam structures. One of the functions of the NSW Government's Dams Safety Committee is to specify the particular mine layouts which can be used beneath the stored waters according to certain guidelines. A study was made of examples of the two different methods of extraction used under the stored waters as proposed by the mining company according to the guidelines and approved by the Dams Safety Committee. Using both pillar monitoring and mathematical modelling approaches it was shown that the recovery of coal from these layouts could be improved while still ensuring the long term stability of both the underground support pillars and the body of the strata. The integrity of the water storages and their impounding structures would therefore not be Affected.

In a recent publication (Bueno and Lane, 2011) the authors presented the analysis of a consolidated dataset composed by 137 autogenous/semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG) mill pilot trials. By comparing the measured data against theoretical specific energy consumption, the analysis indicated which circuit configurations were more or less energy efficient. However, the analysis has also indicated that the energy efficiency of each of the types of circuits vary significantly.There are numerous factors that contribute to the variations of energy efficiency of AG/SAG mill-based circuits, such as feed size distribution, recycle ratios and ore characteristics. In view of this, the present work accesses these factors individually and discusses what may lead a particular circuit configuration to be more or less efficient in terms of energy and costs.CITATION:Bueno, M and Lane, G, 2012.
