Separating Particles by Horizontal Deflection in a Paramagnetic Fluid This paper describes the horizontal deflection behavior of particles in paramagnetic fluids under a high-gradient superconducting magnetic field. Movements of single particle were observed experimentally and indicated that they could be deflected to different positions. Based on these results, the behavior of groups of particles from ore samples was examined in the superconducting magnetic. It was found that these particles could be deflected and settled at a certain position due to the combination of gravity and magneto-Archimedes forces as well as a lateral buoyancy (displacement) force. Mineral particles with different susceptibilities and/or densities could be deflected to different positions, thus producing groupings of similar types of particles. The work described here, although in its infancy, could form the basis of new approach to separating particles based on a combination of susceptibility and density.

HoistEM is a helicopter-towed time domain electromagnetic system. This paper presents details of the towed array structure (the Hoist) as well as a description of the instrumentation. A comparison between HoistEM and ground TDEM (from which HoistEM was derived) is given. Over 50 000 line kilometres of HoistEM have been completed to date and datasets for structural mapping, nickel, base metals, manganese, ground water and bathymetry are presented and discussed.

The Bendigo Goldfield is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is one of a number of quartz-reef fields that make up the greater Central Victorian Goldfield. At Bendigo gold particles are characterised by their very coarse nature, ranging from below 100 to over 10 000 ¦m in size. Some 60 per cent of the gold occurs in particles greater than 1000 ¦m in size. This characteristic ensures that the mineralisation is very challenging to both sample and evaluate. Diamond drilling provides a measure of geological structure, but is a poor measure of in situ grade, understating it by up to 75 per cent. Drilling combined with on-reef development, bulk sampling and geological interpretation has been used to define Indicated Mineral Resources. For grade control, a balance had to be sought between sample representivity, cost, turn around time and practicality. Sampling of extreme nugget effect deposits generally requires the use of bulk sampling in order to be representative. However, the cost and turn around time is significant. As a result, a 50 kg micro-bulk sampling system has been introduced that attempts to overcome these problems by providing a fast, practical method that can discriminate between ore and waste. As the mine passes into production, grade control will increasingly become dependent upon geological data collection and interpretation.

The hoisting system at the Newcrest Telfer mine is designed for a final duty of 7.35 million tonnes per annum at a hoisting distance of 1450 m. In terms of hoisting capacity (t/h) times hoisting distance it is one of the largest friction hoist installations. Initially, the hoist will be equipped for hoisting 6.5 Mtpa from 1100 m depth. This new drive technology is now well proven by ABB for mine hoist applications with the first installation in commercial operation since July 2001. To date 17 systems for medium voltage drives and another five for low voltage drives have been purchased from ABB for mine hoists. This paper will also deal with skip design and powerful data loggers with diagnostics for local and remote monitoring that are installed in the Telfer mine hoist.

The mill area of PT Freeport Indonesia is located in a valley surrounded by steep natural slope, characterised by extreme topography with mountains rising to above 4500 m within 100 km from the seashore. The valleys are deeply embedded into the mountainous terrain and bordered by steep natural slopes. Vertical or overhanging lime walls are interrupted by steep vegetated screen sections containing accumulated loose material from weathering processes and ancient rock falls and/or debris flows/avalanches. The climate can be best described as alpine subtropical with an accumulated rainfall of more than 5000 mm per year. Occasional snowfalls and superficial freezing above 4000 m elevation leads to heavy weathering of the superficial rock layers and along open joints and fractures. The mill area is a crucial and strategic infrastructure for the entire mining operation which is best characterised as a high density industrial area with facilities including water tanks, power generators, crusher, and concentrating facilities including office buildings and workshops as well as access tracks to the underground mining blocks. Considering the local topography, the restricted space conditions and the number of technical installations, the facilities are likely to be affected and highly vulnerable to rock fall from the surrounding slopes. In order to minimise the rock fall hazard three rock fence barriers area were constructed at the mill area. The 7.5 rock fence barriers were designed with the maximum capacity of 5000 kJ. These are the largest capacity of rock fall barriers ever constructed in Indonesia. The total length of the barriers for the three locations was 126 m. The biggest challenge of this project was the construction of the barrier at West Gulley, which was constructed at 300 m above ground level. For this site, construction access was undertaken using helicopter. This presentation discusses the design of the mitigation structures as well as the construction approach and stages of the barriers. Please note: This paper is abstract only.

The technology of coal preparation, while based on similar processes to those in common useage in the 1950s, has improved significantly over the past 15 years primarily due to advances in process control. This technology at least offers the potential for most coal preparation unit operations to be optimised to a considerable degree. However, to maximise the overall yield of an operation from pit to port, factors often outside of the control of the preparation plant operator have a dominant effect. Specific factors include an in depth knowledge of the feed characteristics of the various sources of coal, the detailed mine scheduling to provide an appropriate blend to the plant, and the interim handling and stockpiling processes between the mine face and the customer.This paper summarises the criteria for optimising the yield for a variety of mining, processing and stockpiling options, based on the principle of operating at constant incremental ash. Pragmatic operating assumptions such as extension of the principle to operating at a constant density for gravity operations will be discussed. A means of optimising the compromise between maintaining specification product ash to the customer and maximising yield by always washing at constant incremental ash, without the benefit of a homogenised feed, will also be Presented.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. Simulation is increasingly being used to analyse mineral processing operations and explore efficiency options. Engineers that use simulation are rightly concerned with the quality and applicability of the underlying models. However, many of these models have a significant empirical component, and the best structure for this component may not be apparent. There is an opportunity to improve the quality and application range of these models by exploring potential structures for this empirical element. One approach to this problem is the use of structural optimisation, which is a formalisation of the model development process. This method searches through a family or hyper-structure of candidate models for a model that is optimal with respect to some measure of model quality. This method has been applied to the modelling of an industrial flotation circuit. The result was a model that was a significant improvement over a number of standard models reported in the literature. Structural optimisation provides a method to compare potential models in a systematic and efficient way, and hence to improve the structure of process models.

This paper deals with the modernisation of the brakes on an electrically coupled Blair multi-rope hoist and covers the removal of the old calliper brakes and hydraulic control system, and its replacement with brake discs, disc braking units and hydraulic control systems. The paper covers the braking requirements of the hoist, which is made up of two electrically coupled single-drum hoists, together with the theory behind the choice of brakes and control systems supplied. The paper also covers the project logistics that were required in order to install and commission the new brakes and control systems with the minimum disruption to production on the only rock hoist on a major production shaft. Items covered include the modifications to civil works, pre-installation of bearing lubrication systems, brake discs and hydraulics and the interfacing of the new hydraulic control system to the existing electric control system. It had to be designed to be compatible to a new electric drive and control system due for installation at the end of 2005.

It is hypothesised that increasing the number of loading passes will produce a reduced range of truck payload outcomes compared with four-pass loading. The paper provides analysis to support this hypothesis. It is shown that, hypothetically, loading trucks with five or more passes will result in reduced tendency for overloading and reduced confidence interval for truck payloads that increase the confidence level of containing high end payloads within safe and commercially acceptable limits. Furthermore, increased number of passes provides for more precise bucket load spotting and so improves distribution of payloads within truck bodies. Truck-loading issues examined by the paper include: Improvement in life of driveline components and tyres. Generally tyre costs are relatively moderate; but tyres tend to become an increasingly sensitive performance/cost component as truck scale increases; Reduction of site severity fects flowing on to suspensions, truck frames and structural components generally with potential for reduced long-term repair costs; Less physical body damage due to smaller load increments; Reduced risk of non-compliance with payload limitations for safe braking standards; Increase in loading cycle times tend to increase with scale of loading machinery within the limits of a specific type of equipment (ie rope shovels or hydraulic shovels). Production increase with increased bucket capacity is, to a degree, offset by slower loading cycle times. This is particularly pronounced with front-end loaders but tends to be less noticeable with hydraulic excavators/shovels and electric rope shovels. Decrease in loading time, as a proportion of total truck-cycle time as open pits deepen and dump reaches increase. The production and cost benefits of four-pass loading tend to diminish as truck cycle times increase. The paper also discusses the implications for loading-equipment philosophy to satisfy the future needs of the industry. Cost benefits from upscaling tend to diminish as truck scale increases, so increasing management diligence and close monitoring are required to ensure that expected outcomes are realised. These truck-loading issues have been researched to assess the benefits positive or negative) of four-pass loading in practical scenarios. An attempt is made to determine whether four-pass loading is a æmust-haveÆ or merely a æmythÆ.

Tailings storage facilities are geotechnically complicated structures that develop heterogeneous strength profiles and varied porewater conditions. The monitoring of porewater pressures is one of the only direct measurements that can be performed to monitor the performance of a facility throughout its life and is of particular importance in upstream facilities. Foundation underdrainage, continuous and staged tailings deposition, climate inputs (rain, snow, humidity, evaporation, etc), and stratified tailings permeabilities can complicate this critical measurement that introduces uncertainty to stability analyses. These difficult conditions manifest in vibrating wire piezometer measurements as very low or negative pressure readings, both of which are within the instrument’s range of accuracy. However, the data can be difficult to interpret, and a range of interpretations are adopted from optimistic low phreatic surfaces to conservative fully saturated tailings. Where tailings are potentially liquefiable, these very low readings introduce further uncertainty regarding the pore space saturation ratio and liquefaction potential above the estimated phreatic surface. This area of uncertainty is the vadose zone, and its affect on tailings behaviour is not well understood. The two facilities analysed in this paper are upstream, raised embankments with tailings classified as clayey, sandy silt that have been found to be potentially liquefiable. The vibrating wire piezometers (VWP) at both sites show very low or negative readings when they are initially installed near the surface and then go through cycles of re-saturation and de-saturation. Eventually the readings settle as the VWPs are buried deeper within the tailings. The instrumented sections within the tailings column do not show consistent readings that would be indicative of a hydrostatic phreatic surface at either site. Rather, they are highly variable and can be interpreted as either representing a high phreatic surface within the tailings or as a ‘perched’ phreatic zone within the tailings layers. How the VWP data is interpreted has a significant impact on how the facilities are raised and operated. The design outcome for Site 1, which adopts a lower phreatic surface, results in an embankment that meets factor of safety (FoS) requirements under residual strength conditions without any buttressing. Conversely, a conservative (high) phreatic surface has been adopted for Site 2 and has resulted in the facility requiring a significant buttress to meet FoS under residual strength conditions.

"Predictive maintenance (also known as PHM or equipment ‘health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future equipment failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:reduction of equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetimeautomatic determination of the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis avoidance of costs of unnecessary maintenance and unexpected failures improved safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data preprocessing is performed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques. In the case that data isn’t available for the full range of operating modes, operating scenarios can be simulated. Machine learning techniques are then used to estimate equipment health. Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be operationalised in an IT environment such as a server or cloud. Alternatively, algorithms may be implemented in an embedded system directly on the equipment, allowing for faster response times and significantly reducing the amount of data sent over the network.In this paper, we use both historical and simulated data of the plant under various modes of operation including run to failure, and we then leverage machine learning techniques in MATLAB to estimate degradation and remaining useful life. This technique, of combining both simulation models and machine learning, in the areas of predictive maintenance and equipment health monitoring has been adopted by Safran, makers of aircraft jet engines, since 2007. "Basin Minerals Limited commenced exploring for conventional strandline hosted mineral sands (rutile, ilmenite and zircon) deposits in the Murray Basin in April 1997. This has resulted in the discovery of a major mineral sands field in the Douglas Project area, located southwest of Horsham in the Wimmera Region of Western Victoria. After the successful completion of a pre-feasibility study on these deposits in September 2000, the Douglas Project has advanced to bankable final feasibility study. This study should be completed by mid-2002 to allow a decision to commence production in 2003 at an expected rate of in excess of 500 000 tonnes of combined mineral sands products per annum. The field comprises several mineralised strandlines. The main ones of economic interest are from west to east, the four strandlines, Acapulco, Bondi, Bondi East and Echo. These strandlines at August, 2000 contain total Inferred Resources of 443 million tonnes at 4.7 per cent HM at a one per cent HM cut-off; ie 20.8 million tonnes of heavy mineral concentrate which in turn contains 11.3 million tonnes of ilmenite and leucoxene, 1.3 million tonnes of rutile and 1.6 million tonnes of zircon. The heavy mineral concentrate is coarse-grained with mean diameter grain size of the strandline deposits ranging from 130 to 160 microns in size. Major controls on the formation of mineral sands deposits in the Murray Basin are discussed with reference to the main mineral sand bearing, strand plain domains; the Central Strand Plain, the New South Wales Strand Plain and the West Wimmera Strand Plain. The Douglas Project deposits on the West Wimmera Strand Plain domain are characterised by wide zones of mineralisation with high-grade cores (>10 per cent HM), low stripping ratios, and a valuable economic heavy mineral suite comprising 60 to 80 per cent of heavy mineral concentrate. Constituent mineralogy of the heavy mineral concentrate of the overall deposits is; ilmenite (40 to 58 per cent), leucoxene (five to seven per cent), rutile (four to ten per cent) and zircon (four to 14 per cent). The Douglas Project Area appears to be endowed with significantly enhanced levels of heavy minerals compared to other areas of the Murray Basin due to its unique palaeo-geographical position. Long shore drift to the south of the basin has caused large quantities of heavy mineral to be trapped against the palaeo-cliffs and headlands of a rugged palaeo-coastline which includes in a major embayment, the Grampian Mountains, the Black Range and the Glenelg Complex. To the east, major faulting and uplift has brought the fine-grained WIM offshore deposits close to the surface and has resulted in erosional stripping of mineralised strandline deposits. This mineralisation has been recycled and reconcentrated within the younger strandlines to the west within the adjacent Douglas Project Area. These strandlines are thought to be younger than other mineralised strandlines discovered to-date in the Murray Basin. The Project Area strandlines are described; ie their morphology, geology and patterns of mineral distribution. The mineralogy of each of the strandlines is distinctive and variations are noted along strike and section."

There is no single factor that determines the appropriate capacity for a mining project. It is driven by the size of the resource, the capacity of the market, the availability of capital, the availability of power, the availability of water, and a myriad of other considerations. There is also no single solution to the question of how big the project should be. However, to develop a project, the study team needs to select the configuration options that it regards as the best for the project. To be able to make this selection, the study team should consider the range of available options and do so at a level of detail that gives it confidence in the conclusion but does not lead to multiple detailed design exercises. Having considered the range of options, and with a clear definition of the project owner’s objectives and constraints, the work to be carried into feasibility studies can be focused appropriately. This paper discusses the process of completing strategic mine planning to identify project configuration options to assist in the selection of the processing plant throughput rate (Capacity Study) for a large greenfield open pit mine. The processes described in this paper allow for the basis of design to be set for subsequent studies that meets the objectives at a risk profile acceptable to the owner.

Kidston Gold Mines, located in semi-arid North Queensland, Australia is currently in its closure phase. Highly innovative and comprehensive rehabilitation strategies were employed at the site, including the direct revegetation of the surface of the tailings storage; the construction of a tailings sediment entrapment pond; the construction of a spillway to drain large rainfall events from the surface of the tailings; the construction of store/release covers over the tops of the waste rock dumps; the sheeting with oxide waste rock of the waste rock dump slopes; the partial back-filling of the initial Wises Hill Pit with waste rock and thickened tailings produced from the subsequent Eldridge Pit; the partial flooding of Eldridge Pit following the end of mining; and the construction of wetland systems to treat contaminated tailings and waste rock dump seepage. These closure strategies involved the careful consideration of water management. Specific water management issues included understanding the water balance of the tailings dam; the operation of the tailings dam sediment entrapment pond and spillway; understanding the water balance of the store/release waste rock dump covers; the importance and sustainability of vegetation on the tailings, store/release waste rock dump covers, and on the sheeted waste rock dump slopes; the level and quality of water in the partially flooded Eldridge Pit; and the treatment of contaminated seepage in the constructed wetlands. The seasonal and highly variable rainfall experienced in this semi-arid climate posed a number of challenges for the management of water on the site post-closure. The paper details these challenges and highlights how they were resolved over the period leading up to and following the end of mining.

Over the last 100 years in the Polish mining industry considerable work has been done to assess optimum slurry, develop flexible delivery systems and adjust the fill technology to a wide variety of mining and geological conditions. Sand or industrial mineral waste materials for the backfilling of underground voids are used to control ground movement and surface deformation. This paper discusses various criteria to he considered in the preparation of a fill, including slurry properties, mine infrastructure, mining geometry, placement methods and the purpose of the backfill. This paper presents laboratory and in situ test data on the influence of materials parameters on the slurry flow in a pipeline system, stiffness, permeability, binding time and strength of a backfill, on the distribution of mixture in underground voids or the penetration between roof fall Materials.

The Yanacocha District is located 20 km north of the city of Cajamarca, in the Northern Andean Orogenic belt of northern Peru.Gold production may have occurred as early as Incan times (Paverd, 2000), but modern exploration that began in the 1960s targeted only copper and silver. Newmont Mining Corporation, BRGM and Compa±fa de Minas Buenaventura began exploring for gold in 1983, with Newmont as operator.Initial drilling took place in 1985. By 1992 a reserve of 1.28 million ounces was reported (Teal et al, 2002).Production began at the Carachugo deposit in 1993.Current reserves are 31.7 million ounces at $US 325 per ounce at a grade of 1.03 ppm (Newmont Annual Report, 2003).The operating company, Mineral Yanacocha SRL (Newmont 51 per cent, Buenaventura 44 per cent and International Finance Corporation five per cent) produced 2.85 million ounces in 2003, making Yanacocha one of the largest gold mining operations in the world. The district is made up of a series of epithermal, high sulfidation style gold deposits and one gold-rich gravel deposit (La Quinua), aligned in a NE trend.La Quinua is not discussed in detail in this paper. The bedrock deposits are hosted in a Miocene volcanic package, the Yanacocha Volcanic Complex that also trends NE.Re gional NW striking Andean faults intersect the NE striking Trans-Andean Chicama-Yanacocha structural corridor (Turner, 1997), localising the district mineralisation. These two structural orientations dominate the district, controlling breccia and intrusion locations, and gold mineralisation. Discontinuous EW oriented fracture zones are interpreted as extensional and locally are important in controlling gold mineralisation.

The Clem Jones Tunnel (formally known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel), a A$2.88 billion road tunnel project in Brisbane, Queensland, was successfully completed almost seven months ahead of schedule. The project included two parallel 4.7 km long road tunnels, 740 m of intermediate roadway access ramps and two auxiliary ventilation tunnels. The tunnels incorporate intelligent tunnel systems, best practice fire and life safety standards and typical civil tunnel elements.Over the duration of the project the Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and AECOM (formally Maunsell) design joint venture (MPB) were Lead Designers to the Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Bilfinger Berger Joint Venture (LBBJV). Construction of the toll road commenced in September 2006 and was completed in March 2010, with the tunnel opening then. Contributing to the success of this project was the continued support the lead designers gave throughout the construction period.This paper will focus on some of the structural elements that contributed to the success of the project – in particular the cable tunnel structure, a small precast, culvert shaped element under the pavement of the mainline tunnel, and the fit-out of the Gibbon Street shaft which were designed to be constructed in a combination of precast and in situ concrete.The cable tunnel was incorporated early in the design phase and runs the length of much of the tunnel. This paper will outline the challenges faced by the designers with implementing this system which provided significant construction advantages, among which were being able to install a separate ventilation duct during construction and to start fitting out the mechanical and electrical conduits and drainage system while tunnelling was still underway.The Gibbon Street shaft had a length and width of 20 m by 40 m and an overall depth of 38 m. A 20 m high structure of precast and in situ concrete was constructed in the base to accommodate mechanical and electrical equipment and provide a take-off access for the southern ventilation tunnel. The construction purpose for this structure was to provide a junction between the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and the roadheader-style tunnels, a staging platform for commencing the roadheader tunnelling, and a platform where the TBMs could be dismantled and removed.The design was assessed and reviewed many times throughout the construction process to address the needs of each of these stages. Innovative use of precast concrete was used to minimise construction time.Additionally, the designers provided support to the construction team from the time of design completion through to the tunnel opening. This meant that the changes to the design and adjustment of construction loadings could also be assessed. The fi nal outcome resulted in an efficient construction sequence and a project that has provided an excellent outcome for the client, stakeholders and community.

Rock masses usually exhibit scale dependent mechanical properties primarily due to presence of discontinuities and their inhomogeneous nature. One of the essential preconditions for selection of appropriate strength and deformation parameters of a rock mass in relation to tunnel design is assessment of the scale of the joint network relative to the scale of excavation. In tunnel design practice, scale effects are estimated indirectly using small-scale unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests and rock mass classification based empirical correlations. Large-scale UCS tests have the benefit of direct assessment of anisotropic and scale dependent properties of a rock mass.This paper presents results of a large-scale UCS test on a jointed siltstone. A 450 mm diameter sample with inclined bedding planes was cored and tested in uniaxial compression until failure with load and displacement measurements. The aim of the test is to determine strength and deformation parameters and correlate them with results of small-scale UCS tests of the same sample. The relationships between the small-scale and large-scale rock mass parameters were validated against published correlations from the literature.
