The mining industry has always been cost-focussed but in recent times mining companies have moved towards obtaining a competitive advantage through the implementation and sustainability of best practice in the areas of improved safety, operating costs, quality and productivity. This is the concept of Value In Use û that mining companies see value generated all the way to the bottom line through improved change, and those changes become an established mine practice. Many mining companies do not have the resources or the knowledge to sustainably achieve such an outcome. This has led to companies looking to their suppliers to deliver measured value to their business through partnership arrangements. Suppliers have been able to leverage their knowledge of products, product applications and services to offer alternative supply agreements that bring greater returns to their businesses while improving supplier/client relationships. Orica has developed such a partnership with Coal & Allied in the form of a Continuous Improvement Program. Coal & Allied is based in the Hunter Valley region of NSW and is the largest coal producer in that region. Both parties are contractually bound to jointly deliver Value In Use projects to Coal & AlliedÆs Hunter Valley Operations and Bengalla mine sites. It is the request of the Orica and Coal & Allied Steering Committees that this paper does not include the details of actual projects or the costs or key performance indicators associated with the program. This is to maintain the competitive advantage to both Orica and Coal & Allied through the implementation of such a program. It is in the writersÆ opinion that this paper does not lose any significance through this restriction as the most important component of the Continuous Improvement Program is not the projects themselves but the methodology behind them. With this in mind the paper will discuss the development of Value In Use offerings, the key aspects of the Coal & Allied and Orica joint program, what is a Value In Use project, how to measure its value, finally why and even more importantly what makes this program is a success.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. From 2003 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A major focus of the investigations is developing strategies to maximise the beneficial use of the limestone that will be mined. Laboratory columns and field test pad investigations have been ongoing for six years examining limestone blends. Trial dumps utilising truck placement and conveyor/stacker placement and blending of limestone and acid generating rock have recently been constructed. In addition, based on initial results, investigations aimed at further evaluating the performance of limestone covers in this high rainfall environment have commenced. A significant finding has been the identification of strong armouring layers on sulfide surfaces within well-blended material and under limestone covers. These layers effectively isolate sulfides and thus progressively slow the oxidation rate to a level where the alkalinity load from the limestone exceeds the rate of acid generating. ARD is controlled and neutral low metal drainage results. The results have demonstrated that although limestone blending is effective, it is necessary to ensure that all size fractions within the blend receive adequate acid neutralising capacity to buffer the potential acidity. Because the sulfur content generally increases and the acid neutralising capacity decreases with decreasing particle size in limestone blends, the amount of limestone required greatly exceeds the stoichiometric requirement. This paper describes the development of limestone blending specifications for potentially acid forming overburden and presents the results of the ongoing limestone cover trials at the Grasberg mine.

The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. Risk assessment techniques were triggered by major public disasters, such as the Flixborough chemical plant disaster (1973), Three Mile Island nuclear plant event (1979) and others.Today, most industries see risk assessment as an inherent part of their business, but do mining sites capture business risks that are related to major loss scenarios, which could have a significant impact on the operation?Does your risk assessment process:- involve a team having the right skill set so that the discussion is both stimulated and technically sound?- use generic assessment when a site-specific assessment is needed?- fail to consider all possible outcomes, including maximum foreseeable loss (MFL)?- fail to identify all hazards and controls associated with a particular activity?- fail to monitor controls effectively?This paper addresses the issues identified by these questions and provides some direction for developing a risk management process where business risk associated with critical asset integrity is integrated with other business and safety and health risk processes to provide a robust method for managing your business. The extractive industries response to community engagement due to social and political pressures in the 1980s and 1990s was the starting point of development leading to the modern function of corporate social responsibility.Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater transparency and responsibility of corporate organisations and who possess greater awareness of the communities they participate in, the mining sector faces another step change in how it approaches and integrates corporate social responsibility, transparency and engagement.Mining is seeking reserves of lower grades, in more sensitive environments and in countries with minimal transparency and governance. Not only are the locations changing but so to the stakeholders to engage with and issues to contend with. An increasingly savvy opposition, including not just the ‘green hippies’ but the Gen-Ys interested in the wider sustainability debate and Baby Boomers moving to life style environments, are now questioning mining’s behaviour and encroachment into ‘their space’. Issues including effect on lifestyle amenity, property value, energy efficiency, social provision; concepts such as ‘doing more with less’, participatory engagement, increasing transparency and balancing economic, environment, cultural and social aspects are becoming the norm.The traditional model of supporting local communities, communicating plans and providing employment, community investment and indigenous support programs is not enough. Our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities and play a role in addressing the global sustainability issues.This paper draws on corporate social responsibility trends, integrated functions and implementation approaches through the application of activities within Newmont operations across Asia Pacific.The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities do not necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

The iron ore mining industry is currently going through an adjustment from high to more moderate growth as China’s economy transitions from capital-intensive investment to a more services-oriented economy. We are now witnessing a renewed focus on productivity improvements and cost savings as planned expansions are completed. Despite the scale and importance that the mining industry plays in the global economy, innovation literature is generally more targeted at faster-moving industries with shorter innovation timeframes and lower capital requirements. To fill this gap, VCI set out to understand the state of innovation in the mining industry in 2014. This State of Play report aims to give an objective appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of innovation in mining. The report has three sections covering both the structure and delivery of innovation in mining:Ecosystem – focused on understanding how the iron ore mining innovation ecosystem system works, including the roles of large and small miners, service companies, researchers and governments. Our recommendations focus on what is required for the system to work well and improve the level and quality of innovation in the industry.Strategy – how do companies define their innovation strategy in relation to their corporate strategy? How are these related to prevailing global and industry trends? How do they communicate this with their business? How successful are they? These are among the questions that this section attempts to answer. Our recommendations are pitched at the executive leadership of iron ore mining and service companies.Delivery – focused on how companies develop and deliver innovation, looking at the success of different structural options, leadership and culture, partnerships and the best approaches to change. This paper summarises the process taken to simplify 35 ground support standards accounting for the multiple development profiles, dynamic geotechnical environment and the practical safety implications of a large-scale change in the ground control standards. This reduction was required after an incident involving incorrect standards being issued. The subsequent investigation identified that: • Selection of ground support standard for a mining instruction (MI) is not straightforward due to multiple standards, standards not reflecting current reinforcement used and complex geotechnical environment being encountered. Instead, site-specific ground control instructions were being issued. • Ground support standards were hard to follow and confusing, errors were present and not all standards to scale. • Ground support standards being used did not reflect what was being installed, ie bolt type incorrect and mesh orientation different. • No process or tier action response plan (TARP) for operators to follow for ground control standard noncompliance. • No justification for ground support standards being used in the current geotechnical environment. • No process for ground support standard selection and thereby no paper trail to document and assess adequacy of performance. A project was undertaken to reduce and simplify the ground support standards, produce a justification document to support ground support design and develop a process for site practitioners to identify the type of ground support standard required for the mining instruction. The exercise of rationalising the ground support was met with some challenges, including: • Technical aspects to determine the level of demand and the capacity for each ground support scheme. • Training the geotechnical engineers how to determine the level of risk for each area. • Winning over other technical services staff and the underground mining contractor of the new approach and then implementation. One of the major successes was the acceptance by the underground operators who found the system simplified their work and gave them increased confidence in management of seismicity. The rationalised ground support standards have now been successfully in place for over two years.

Physical separation features in almost every mineral processing circuit. The category encompasses a broad range of techniques and technologies including hydrocyclones, gravity concentration methods (including jigs, spirals, centrifugal concentrators, tables, heavy media separators) and thickeners, all of which make use of the inherent density differences between two mediums. It is also possible to include flotation, magnetic separation, and ore sorting in the physical separation category.However, opportunities for enhanced physical separation performance can now go beyond the common practice of optimising unit operations. Improved options exist for feed preparation ahead of the physical separation stage, enabling higher performance and lower cost outcomes for physical separation flow sheets and technologies.The use of new applications in breakage technologies combined with mineral liberation analysis to optimise liberation prior to the physical separation stage provides options for preconcentration and gangue rejection as well as better separation efficiency. The use of low cost gangue rejection and preconcentration can be an intermediate step between mining and processing that allows processing of lower cut-off grades from the mine whilst delivering higher grades to the mill.Optimising flow sheets and technology performance requires detailed understanding of particle size and shape distributions as well as liberation characteristics to suit the particular separation unit, combined with knowledge of the available technologies, their capabilities and the economic impact across the whole mine cycle.CITATION:Gray, A, 2017. MineSense Technologies Ltd. is revolutionising grade control at mining operations by installing ShovelSense® sensors on buckets that measure the grade of every load before it is dumped in the truck. This allows the mine to exploit grade variations at a resolution that was not available before, reducing the amount of ore loss to the waste stream and removing waste from material destined for processing. These changes dramatically improve the profitability and sustainability of mining operations. ShovelSense relies on X-ray fluorescence analysis of the rocks as they flow in the bucket and is integrated with fleet management to direct the trucks to the right destination. Lab simulations of ShovelSense measurements on porphyry copper ores show correlations between predictions and lab measurements at 0.98 r-squared with a coefficient of variation of 10 per cent. Visualisation of copper grade predictions in three dimensions shows a reasonable match with the dig plan, but with local changes in the ore-waste contact due to more accurate contact identification, related to blast movement and other mining factors. Correct delineation of these contacts ensures ore trucks are not sent to the waste dump and waste trucks are diverted from the crusher, creating enormous value for the operation and the environment.

"As of 1 December 2014, the 2012 edition of the JORC Code requires Ore Reserves to be defined by studies at the pre-feasibility or feasibility level. This paper examines how the pathway for most mining developments is determined in the Pre-Feasibility Study and how a trade-off must be made between the need to make the best decision, the constraints of limited time and resources, and the level of the project’s accuracy and uncertainty in terms of value. Issues considered include framing the scope of the study, planning for robust decision-making and ensuring effective communication between the diverse disciplines within the team.An inherent conflict exists between the immediate value added to a mining business from an increase in ore reserves resulting from a ‘quick’ Pre-Feasibility Study and the long-term value of pursuing a development strategy based on proper investigation and evaluation of the options. Recognition and resolution of this conflict is necessary if a project is to progress into future development stages, both in a timely manner and with the optimal development alternative and strategy.The challenge for project developers and those conducting the Pre-Feasibility Study is to understand what the key deliverables are (ie an Ore Reserve statement, option selection, business evaluation, forward work plan or risks) and how to follow good practice to ensure that these deliver value.CITATION:Logan, D J and Jackson, J, 2016. Separation of leach residue suspended solids from pregnant liquor solution is an important step in hydrometallurgy flowsheets. Alternative flowsheet options are counter-current decantation (CCD) thickeners or counter current washing (CCW) horizontal belt vacuum filters. Extensive sedimentation and vacuum filtration simulations have been completed by FLSmidth on leach discharge slurries to indentify equipment capacity and performance. These data were used to compare Capex and Opex for CCD versus CCW alternatives. In addition, Capex and Opex for large horizontal belt vacuum filters with filtration areas greater than 250m2 are compared to current state of the art sizes of 150m2. This paper presents this information and discusses various advantages and disadvantages.

Multiphase slags form the basis of the reduction pathway for manganese ferroalloy production. The present work aims to understand the flow of slag through the coke bed based on experimentation in controlled conditions. Synthetic slags of different basicities were evaluated for their phase composition, viscosity, and flow. The two-phase slag will have two zones: a liquid slag zone and a multiphase zone. The multiphase zone will consist mostly of a solid phase with some liquid slag between the solid particles. The multiphase part will hence have a high viscosity. The liquid zone will flow into the coke bed while the multiphase area will stay. With increasing reduction, the multiphase area will decrease in size until the solid phase is gone and the whole slag will flow into the coke bed. The effective viscosity of slag will decrease with the lowering of the solid oxide phase. The results from flow experiments confirmed that the segregation of phases occurs when slag flows through the coke bed. It is observed that the flow is dependent both on the size of the void and the viscosity of slag.

The Pine Creek Inlier produced 12 440 kg of gold in the period from the first gold discovery in the 1860s to the early-1900s. During the 1930s renewed large-scale prospecting took place and gave a foothold for today's gold mining operations. The rise of the gold price and improved mining methods in the 1970s and 1980s made possible low cost, bulk low grade mining operations. Various gold deposits including vein, network and stratiform types occur in the Pine Creek Inlier (Nicholson and Eupene, 1990). The Tom's Gully deposit is located 100 km south-east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. It is hosted in the early Proterozoic Wildman Siltstone and lies north-east of 1800 my old Mt Bundey Pluton (Figure 1). Around the Mt Bundey Pluton, there are several prospective base and precious metal deposits such as Quest 29. The Tom's Gully gold deposit was discovered in 1986 and yielded a total of 3070 kg of gold from ore averaging 9.35 g/t gold between 1987 and 1990 when the mining operation was terminated.

Digital optical microscopy (DOM) and automated SEM-based (ASEM) mineralogy systems (MLA, QEMSCAN) have experienced significant developments within the last decade. However these developments have been independent from each other and the two mineralogical techniques have so far not yet been integrated to combine the strengths and technical benefits of both analytical platforms. This detailed comprehensive mineralogical information is critical support for geometallurgy.Major hardware and software advances in DOM in the last few years have provided important new capabilities with potential applications to automated mineralogy. These technological advances have been largely driven by sectors outside mining (eg medical pathology) and have not yet been widely adopted within the minerals industry. The advent of DOM offers significantly more automated mineralogy capabilities than traditional expert-mineralogist driven optical microscopy. This is based on advances in automated image acquisition, high resolution cameras for digital imaging, imaging of large areas through mosaic options, integration of multiple layers and application of advanced image analysis techniques.Ongoing research involves combining the outputs of DOM and ASEM-based microscopy to create new capabilities for integrated microscopy based on development of advanced cross-platform image fusion and data integration between DOM and ASEM (exploiting the benefits of both analytical platforms). This requires non-linear image registration and transfer of mineralogical identification from ASEM to DOM systems using sophisticated image manipulation and data analysis software.Examples will be given of image fusion and data registration for a range of different ore types. Image fusion techniques are demonstrated using a porphyry copper deposit sample where sulfides and precious metals are classified using the MLA and gangue mineralogy obtained from DOM images. Data integration enables creation of a library containing optical property variability information for minerals identified by the MLA; thus reducing the reliance on skilled mineral identification by supplementing human interpretation

The stability of suspensions can frequently be controlled only by the use of supplementary polymeric agents. Such methods date back to the time of the ancient Egyptians, who used natural rubber as a deflocculant for carbon black in the manufacture of ink (Anon, EncyclopediaBritannica, 1968). Since the development of synthetic polymers in the 1950s they have been deployed in all manner of applications. Indeed the mining and paper industries as well as industrial or communal waste water treatment plants are largely dependent on flocculants which make a major contribution to the relief of the environment. As some of the polymers used are carried out from the process via purified water, problems can emanate from the application itself as long as no reliable data is available as to the exact whereabouts of the polymers and their impact on the biosphere. In order not to invade other systems, they would have to be biologically degradable which has not, until now, been confirmed (Blockhaus, Sequaris and Schwuger, 1991; Schumann, 1991). It has, however, previously been demonstrated (Hoberg et al, 1990) that when process water circulates in mineral processing operations, residual amounts of polymeric flocculants can have extremely adverse effects on the selectivity of flotation processes. The adsorption behaviour is consequently one of the most important considerations in the development of new polymers, the aim being to minimise the amount of non-absorbent matter. The objective of the investigations carried out on ampholitic synthetic polymers of high molecular weight to be reported on here was to permit the connection between settling index and adsorptivity to be characterised in greater detail. As the level of knowledge concerning flocculation and polymer adsorption in real systems is still limited in spite of numerous practical and theoretical studies in this field, the experiment was designed to be relatively broadly-based. As well as investigating various raw materials, an attempt was made to compile results on the influence exerted by different surface charges.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Telfer Gold Mine consists of an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation located 734 m directly below active open pit operations. Open pit and underground current production rates are 50 million and 5.7 million tonnes per anum (Mt/a) respectively. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 with breakthrough planned to occur on the 5484 bench of the west wall in late 2009. Risk to the south ramp was identified during this time, resulting in the construction of the north ramp. The SLC was continually tracked from initiation with a suite of monitoring systems and managed with a Major Hazard Management Plan (MHMP) and associated Trigger Action and Response Plans (TARP). At breakthrough the eastern limb of the cave was located within a 70 m horizontal distance from the south ramp. The south ramp was closed in October 2009 due to significant slope deformation, extensive cracking in the berms and batters between the ramp and breakthrough bench and a major failure 250 m to the north of the cave breakthrough. Wall response was first identified from slope deformation measurements taken by the wall monitoring radar in May 2009, at which point the SLC was 160 m from breakthrough. The impact of the SLC on the slope is a unique case with the monitoring systems in place able to provide data on the slope reaction to the SLC progression. This paper will discuss the management of the south ramp such as the early interpretation of risk associated with cave breakthrough, monitoring systems implemented to track the cave progression and wall deformation, data integration and interpretation and risk management. Following the closure of the south ramp further instrumentation programs and risk assessments were conducted to determine the risk of re-opening this haulage route. The outcomes of this program will also be presented.

In this paper, an analysis is made of the present situation in the Chinese steel industry and its demand for iron ores. It is shown that the demand for iron ores has been growing substantially with the rapid development of the steel industry all over the world, especially in China. However, the iron ore market is currently in the situation where supply exceeds demand due to the economic crisis, with more investment in mines and less output of steel for several years ahead all over the world. Gigantic pressure is confronting the Chinese steel mills due to the too high and irrational price of iron ores. It is time to return the price of iron ores to a normal position much closer to their value. More attention has therefore been paid to developing low-grade and complex iron ore resources in China due to the irrational price of imported iron ores. More innovative mineral processing processes have been developed to tackle these complex resources. A systematic introduction to the development of beneficiation processes for low-grade iron ores is provided, including upgrading low-grade siderite, limonite, micron sized haematite and magnetite resources.

In some parts of Australia, mine air cooling may not be needed until a depth of 1300 m below surface is reached. In other locations, it may be essential at a depth of only 300 m below surface. The reasons for these differences are multifaceted. This paper discusses the main factors and describes a simple method to assess whether or not mine air cooling will be required. The method uses a graphical relationship that considers depth below surface, geothermal gradient, surface climatic conditions and directness of the mine intake routes. This relationship has been developed, tested and refined over a period of more than ten years using data collected from most of Australia’s deeper metalliferous mines. The method provides a ‘first-pass’ indication of whether more detailed cooling studies may be needed. Perhaps more importantly, the method’s underpinning by benchmarking against other mines improves confidence in the assessment results. "Automation offers the mining industry great potential for improvements in productivity and safety. However, the experience of introducing automation in other industries has been that the full potential of new technology is not always realised. Designers are surprised, for example, to find that automation does not eliminate human errors. Unwanted and unexpected consequences also arise if the introduction of automation fails to consider how people will adapt to the new technology. A focus on the technical aspects of automation is necessary but not sufficient for success. The potential for improvements in productivity and safety promised by automation will only be achieved if the joint cognitive system that emerges from the combination of humans and automation is designed to perform the functions required for system success. It is a massive, volcanically hosted, low-grade gold deposit that exhibits excellent characteristics conducive to low cost mining and treatment.In 2014, Mt Rawdon began investigating initiatives to deliver higher mill throughputs without any significant capital expenditure or modifications to the existing processing plant. Various studies have shown throughput increases are possible by applying more blast energy, essentially by reducing feed size through blasting and leaving less work for the comminution circuits (Brent et al, 2013; Ziemski, 2011; Workman and Eloranta, 2003).Given that 53 per cent of energy used on a mine site is consumed by the comminution circuit, with only two per cent being consumed by drill and blast (Smith, 2013), it makes logical sense for a mining operation to align their drill and blast with their processing plant. The term commonly used when exploring this relationship is a ‘Mine to Mill’ program.Over nearly 12 months, various blasting options and Mine to Mill methodologies were tested at Mt Rawdon. Throughout the journey, it was abundantly clear that the Mine to Mill initiative is not as simple as making one technical or physical change and expecting an improvement. Rather, true sustainable improvements demand a paradigm shift across both the mining and processing cultures, where all departments are aligned and working towards the one outcome.
