Types of structure found in 'Jest Australian beach sands are described. Their recognition by geostatistical methods follows nth a discussion of the effectiveness of sampling patterns. Examples of structures are given, and an account of their effect on valuation procedures.

"With the recent advancement in drill core imaging systems, a large volume of high resolution drill core images can now be rapidly collected and mineralogically classified. This paper introduces a novel semi-automated method for rapid prediction of process engineering parameters from this type of image. The aim is to allow for a rapid and low-cost assessment of the ore processing variability within a mineral deposit with a reduced amount of metallurgical test work. This method will see its application primarily in the project evaluation phase, where proper evaluation of the processing variability of the orebody normally requires a prolonged and costly metallurgical test work program. Applying this image-based texture analysis method on the mineralogical classified drill core images, the ores are classified according to their textures. For each engineering parameter, a small number of physical test work is required to produce a data set for training and testing of the predictive model. Test work is the foundation upon which the success of projects and subsequent operations is laid, reflected in Professor Arthur Taggart’s pithy observation: ‘Make your mistakes on the small scale and your profits on the larger scale’. Indeed, Professor AllanTrench has succinctly noted that ‘Get the metallurgical characteristics wrong and you don’t have a project’.With deposits becoming lower grade, more structurally and mineralogically complex, final products requiring lower levels of impurities and tailings management demanding more attention, test work now assumes even greater significance in the acceptance and successful execution of a project. This paper is the first in a series aiming to stimulate thought on the metallurgical test work process by getting back to the fundamental basics through exploring and providing some guidelines for the metallurgical testing world, noting preferred practices as well as precautions and mitigations. This covers the key characteristics of metallurgical test work programs, including what needs to be done, sample selection, quality control and associated drivers, and most importantly, selecting, assessing and managing test work facilities. A major diamond mining operation in South Africa is faced with the unique problem of recovering usable water from the fine tailings stream. The kimberlite ore hoisted is washed prior to crushing in order to remove adhered fine clay particles. These particles form a colloidally stable suspension from which it has not been possible to recover clear recycle water. Research has been conducted on this problem for more than 20 years and it is only recently that a breakthrough has been achieved. This paper describes the work done to gain an understanding of the suspension stability and which subsequently led to the testing of a process at pilot-plant Scale.

Understanding watercourses and river processes at a landscape scale is vital for managing risk to mining infrastructure and operations as well as minimising future environmental impacts beyond the life of the mine. Recognising this, Iluka Resources Limited engaged Alluvium Consulting Australia to identify and characterise watercourses across several neighbouring mineral tenements in the Eucla Basin, South Australia (Alluvium, 2013, 2014a, 2014b). The objective of the studies was to inform planning for risk management during mine planning and operation and appropriate landscape rehabilitation for mine closure.Mining operations in the area are by open cut extraction of mineral sands. The extracted resource is processed on-site before leaving the site for export. Several pits are to be developed in stages with simultaneous backfilling and surface reinstatement. Mining is initially taking place in the Jacinth tenement, where up to 100 km of watercourses may be directly or indirectly impacted (refer to Figure 1).The total study area (shown in Figure 1) is approximately 330 km2 and spans three smaller areas that were the focus of separate investigations during mine planning.CITATION:Ferguson, C, White, K, Harding, M and Hardie, R, 2016. Sustainable closure of coal mines in Australia to a safe, stable, non-polluting condition remains one of the industry’s biggest environmental and social challenges. A significant proportion of mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland have dispersive spoil. Based on an estimated area of 20,000ha and a rehabilitation cost of AUD$100,000 to AUD$150,000/ha, the instantaneous rehabilitation liability for the Bowen Basin alone is estimated at AUD$2 to $3 billion.Dispersive spoils present problems in post-mining rehabilitated landforms due to increased potential for surface and tunnel erosion, compromising the ability to achieve fundamental mine closure objectives of a safe, stable, non-polluting and self-sustaining post-mining landform (Minserve, 2004). Dispersion results in clay particles being mobilised and transported in water, even at low flow velocities (So et al., 1998; Minserve, 2004), and blocking of soil pores, resulting in surface sealing, crusting and reduced permeability (DNR, 1997; Vacher et al., 2004) which, in turn, further increases runoff (Dang et al., 2018).CITATION:Dale, G, Reardon-Smith, K, Thomas, E, Bennett, J, McCallum, L and Raine, S, 2018. PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. The coal basins that formed near the margin of Permian Australia were comparable in size with the Appalachian coalfields and with the European fields between Wales and Poland. They formed on the foreland side of a growing orogen in a system of linked transform basins formed by transtension on strike-slip faults. They were terminated and compressed when the Gympie volcanic arc was accreted to the orogen. Another huge system of Permian coal basins extending far inland from the Permian coast was also terminated when the Gympie Terrane was Accreted.

Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. The anticipated economic life of the mine, which defines the rate of mine production, is dictated initially by the design capacity of the mill/concentrator and the production capacity of the mine relative to the grade and tonnage of ore that can be encompassed by the pit design. A small pit will result in smaller investment and cash flow; in contrast, a larger size of pit will increase capital investment and annual revenue. Since open pit mine design and long-term production sequencing are essentially based on three-dimensional block models, changes in block dimensions leads to different mine sizes, and therefore changes in the mine life. The physical characteristics of the deposit, such as reserve tonnage and ore grade, affect the expected future revenues from the mining project, and consequently they affect the life of the mine. Large blocks will increase the recoverable ore reserves and production rates and hence increase the mine life. This paper discusses the effects of the block dimension on the commercial ore reserve, grade-tonnage curve and its effect on the production rate, ultimate pit size, mining cost and consequently the mine life. The result shows that block height is the most effective parameter governing the economical life of the mine.

Segregation of tailings on deposition can occur as a result of a) sub-aqueous deposition, and b) sub-aerial deposition at lower solids concentrations (i.e. when the solids concentration is less than the segregation threshold). The effects are likely to be more pronounced in the case of subaqueous deposition.This paper presents the results of an investigation of a sub-aqueous tailings facility.Data from the investigation show extreme variations in particle size and density compared to test results for non-segregated ‘all-in” tailings. The results indicate that on segregation both the fine and coarse splits tend towards a well sorted (poorly graded) mix, and both have significantly lower consolidated density than the all in tailings. This result is reasonably well known for the case of the segregated fines (“slimes ponds”) but less appreciated for the coarse fraction. The results suggest that if the effects of segregation are not allowed for, the overall density of the deposit can be seriously over-estimated at the design stage. Also the quantity of water retained in the tailings can significantly influence water recovery and water balance results.CITATION:Seddon, K, 2018. The paper presents an overview of the mining industry of Papua New Guinea. Although the Bougainville problem is still unresolved, new mines like Ok Tedi, Misima and Porgera, which have come on stream during recent past, have raised hopes of sustained growth period in the industry. Kutubu Oilfield is also being developed in the Southern Highlands and the oil production has commenced from July 1992. Government revenue from these mega projects will increase five-fold during 1993 and 1994. A new mine which is being planned is the fabulous Lihir Deposit, on an island renowned to be full of gold. Gold occurs within a volcano which still contains high temperature ground water because the system which created the deposit is still geothermally active.In Papua New Guinea, problems of environmental management are far easier to tackle than those of a socio-political and economic nature involving compensation payments to the landowners and the distribution of royalties and taxes between the national and provincial governments. At the socio-political level, the country has not been able to resolve the problems of land rights versus mining rights. Whenever mining starts in a big way, it raises people's expectations to a very high level, which then becomes the focal point of dispute between landowners, provincial governments, national government and mining companies. A new system called 'Forum' has been tried to bring all parties together and son out the issues. The system appears to be working well in new mines like Ok Icdi, Porgera, Misima and Kutubu Oilfields.

Uranium mining operations commenced at Ranger mine site, Jabiru NT Australia in May 1980. The Ranger orebodies, totalling approximately 110 000 tonnes contained U305 had been indicated by airborne radiometric survey in 1969 and confirmed by drilling the following year. Both diamond and percussion drilling methods were used to define the mineralisation and samples were analysed using a combination of radiometric and neutron activation techniques. Ore reserve estimates were calculated from conventional and geostatistical methods, and following the mining of 15 million tonnes of ore, reconciliations with before mining estimates are well within acceptable industry standards. In-pit grade control employs radiometric techniques including a radiometric truck discriminator built in Australia to mine specification to meet production requirements and improve productivity. Environmental requirements associated with uranium mining are a daily consideration.

In sizing of wet coal by the horizontal vibrating screen, screen openings to be used is much restricted, because coal is sticky and its bulk density is little. The electrically heated screen and other various types of screen had been tried to screen raw coal and coal as raw materials at a few mm. However, they failed to realize satisfactory results. On the other hand, fine sizing of coal is requested by many fields. For example, raw coal is desired to be screened at the fine rate, before being fed to the coal preparation control system in order to transport undersizes as unprepared coal particles and to reduce load in coal preparation waste water treatment system.1) Coals fed to the fluidized bed boiler also should be sized at a few mm. Regardless of many requests on fine sizing of coal, it seems that there are many cases to omit the basic screening process, because the screening is very difficult on a industrial scale. Size control as pretreatment of coal as raw materials is presented as one of the basic screening processes. In 1979, Kinki Industrial Co., Ltd. and Nippon Steel Corporation jointly succeeded in developing the vertical centrifugal screen. Closed -circuit crushing system by the use of this screen has operated actually at N.S.C, Hirbhata .Works, and realized the anticipated result. Consequently, this system has established the position as the most basic technology in the coal preparation. 2), 3), 4) This system has been also introduced to Nakayama Steel Works, Ltd. in 1982. This system termed the CPC (Coal Preparation Control) Process has been operated smoothly in both N.S.C. and Nakayama. Reported herein is the practical application of the vertical centrifugal screen termed V3-Separator. (V3 means vertical, versatile and vibration.)

In 1984 a new Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) was commenced by the Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ); the new program was in response to the withdrawal of the Bureau of Mineral Resources from regional mapping. Areas for mapping were selected in northern and south-eastern Queensland on the basis of potential for mineral discoveries, level of company interest, inaccuracies in the first edition mapping and interests of other organisations (government and universities) in joint projects.Geological provinces of particular interest in northern Queensland are the Hodgkinson Basin, parts of the Georgetown Inlier not covered by earlier BMR-GSQ mapping, Broken River Embayment, Burdekin Basin, Lolworth-Ravenswood Block, Campwyn Block and Anakie Inlier. The 1:250,000 sheets covering these areas of interest are shown in Figure 1 including those already completed, those in progress and those planned for future investigation.A flow chart showing the various phases for RGMP projects is shown in Figure 2. Data collection has two facets: (i) field recording and (ii) office work including air photo interpretation, study of company reports, literature research, petrography and various laboratory studies. Two main strands of information collected are represented by a data base and compilation sheets. Compilation sheets are generally at 1:25,000 scale and are available for purchase. The current data base is very fragmentary and can be accessed only by direct contact with the relevant geologist or via written reports. A more accessible field data base is in the process of being introduced this year; this field data base (REGMAP) is based on standardised data recording and computer storage.

The Maragorik prospect is an example of high sulphidation, Cu/Au mineralisation occurring at a high level in the hydrothermal system. As extensive ash deposits blanket the region, controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT), in conjunct-ion with bulldozer trenching, have been used to delineate subsurface geology. Fluid upflow has occurred along EW structures dilated by rotation on the bounding major NW lineaments. Rising hydrothermal fluids have exploited permeable horizons in contact with the upflow structures. This lithological control is evident as ledges of silicification and peripheral clay alteration, at high levels in the system. As is typical of high sulphidation systems, a two phase fluid consists of an initial rapidly moving vapour-dominated phase, followed by a liquid-dominated phase. Much of the zoned and overprinted silica to clay alteration is developed from the vapour-dominated fluid. Mineral deposition occurs as a result of brecciation of the competent silic-ification by liquid phase fluids. Such mineralisation is of restricted volume in ledges proximal to the feeder structures.The style of alteration and mineralisation are indicative of a very low temperature and hence a high level system. Thus, although high sulphid-ation systems are inferred to develop from porphyry-related magmatic fluids, such a source at Maragorik is interpreted to be very deeply buried.

New high-strength Zn alloys for moulds are demanded from the automobile and electric industries in Japan, because the s rength of Zn moulds is still not high enough for the mass production. There are two approaches to improve the strength of Zn alloys. One is to increase the Al content. ZA alloys (ZA-8, ZA-12, ZA-27) were developed through this approach. The other is to increase the Cu content. But it is known that an increase in Cu generally depresses the castability of Zn alloys, so that the alloys with increased Cu have been rarely studied until now. In this study a reconciliation between the strengthening and the castability of Zn alloys by enriching both with Al and Cu has been attempted. Accordingly we have studied on the Zn alloys containing 4 to 25 mass per cent Al and to 24 mass per cent Cu have been studied. Their fluidity, which primarily corresponds to the castability of the alloy, were measured first and 19 alloys were selected based upon their fluidities and casting temperatures. Mainly the mechanical properties of all 19 alloys were tested and some were found to be excellent in both strength and castability. Z1009 (Zn-IOAI-9Cu-0.02Mg alloy) cast in a sand mould has the tensile strength of 360 MPa while ZAS (Zn-4AI-3Cu-0.04Mg alloy), which is the most popular alloy for moulds, is 215 MPa. Z2520 (Zn-25AI-20Cu-0.02Mg alloy) cast in a sand mould has a Vickers hardness of 178, compared to 107 for ZAS and 104 for ZA-27 (Zn-27AI-2Cu-0.02Mg). Furthermore the castability of Z1009 is as good as that of ZAS. The underside shrinkage occuring in casting ZA-27 is restrained in Z2520.

Robertson Diasol have developed a spectral gamma-gamma tool fully able to withstand borehole conditions. Spectral data is digitally recorded across 256 channels depending on energy levels of the photoelectric effect. Data processing is being developed with the objective of calibrating channel amplitudes to mineral type which will lead to a direct log of selected mineral grade as a continuous trace with depth.

The principles of three-dimensional geological modelling are well understood and routinely used. Sample data is collated and geostatistical tools used to ensure that sample data is suitable for its end use, which is typically a block model that is appropriate for mine planning. What has become increasingly apparent is that physical rock properties and geotechnical parameters need to be incorporated into the three-dimensional geological model to create an integrated mine model.The approach to the collection of geotechnical information is not as highly prescribed and controlled as collection of geological data. Commonly, the geotechnical data set is incomplete and inconsistent, with little consideration of what the end use will be by those collecting the data, or how the geotechnical data might relate to the geological data. In some cases, specific geotechnical investigation programs are completed, yet correlation between those programs and previously collected data is rarely undertaken to the same level of diligence as found in the geology field.There are some obstacles that need to be considered when attempting to incorporate geological parameters, such as grade, lithology, and geological domains with geotechnical information such as rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR), rock strength, and geotechnical domains into the same three-dimensional block model. Interpolation or geostatistical estimation methods used for grade estimates might not be appropriate for many components in rock characterisation, particularly search geometries. A number of examples are provided to illustrate issues underlying some of the data collection procedures, and their effects on three-dimensional geotechnical modelling.The example presented attempts to highlight generally observed shortcomings in the collection of geotechnical information, parameters which need to be considered when combining geological and geotechnical data into the same model, and the benefits of having a combined block model from the beginning of a project.CITATION:Zunica, K and Penney, A R, 2014.
