Camel Creek Mine operated by Lynch Mining Pty Ltd is located 65 km west of inghain and 160 kin north west of Townsville in North Queensland. (Figure 1). The Camel Creek gold mineralisation was discovered in mid-1987 in an area previously known for its tin workings. Mining commenced in January 1989 after an oxide reserve of 1.2 million tonnes @ 2.1 g/t gold had been delineated. The first gold pour was in May 1989. The mine developed into a medium sized open cut operation, with full site facilities. The initial mining rate was 500 000 tpa utilising run-of-mine (ROM) heap leaching to recover the gold. By the end of 1990 the wider orehodies were mined and efforts were focused on the narrow orebodies, of width typically less than three metres. Smaller earth moving equipment was employed to selectively mine the narrow orehodies leading to a decrease in the mining rate to 200 000 tpa. The Red Gold deposit (80 000 tonnes « 3.0 g/t to 18 in vertical) was mined in mid-1990 and ore was hauled approximately 8 kin to the Camel Creek heap leach operation. The ore was hauled in a dedicated campaign after being stockpiled. The cost of dedicated ore haulage ensured that only the more exceptional of the remote orebodies could be mined in this manner. The Golden Cup orebody, some 20 km from Camel Creek, was too distant to permit ore haulage. However, this prospect contained sufficient gold (initially 90 000 tonnes @ 3.0 g/t) to warrant the installation of a small mobile adsorption facility. Construction of the second heap leach operation commenced in late-1990. Gold production commenced in early April 1991. Mining of several smaller orebodies remote to the second heap leach facility has been undertaken and further mining is planned. This paper outlines heap leaching practice at Camel Creek Mine and summarises the success of the Golden Cup heap leach.

As shallow coal reserves with easier mining conditions are exhausted, future deep coal mining with difficult mining conditions may face significant economic, technical and environmental challenges. Moreover, due to increased coal production capacity with the new generation longwall systems, predicting adverse mining conditions has become more important than ever before. The potential impact of these difficult conditions is an increase in mining risks and costs. Reliable prediction of rock mass deformation, mine stability and mine water inflow is not only essential for improving mine safety and reduction of coal production costs, but it is also important for the assessment and management of the environmental impact of mining. This paper briefly describes an integrated approach to mine groundwater simulation and prediction. Central to this integrated approach is a three-dimensional computer code called COSFLOW, developed by CSIRO of Australia in collaboration with NEDO and JCOAL of Japan to address the pressing issues of mine water management. COSFLOW incorporates unique features that make it ideal for the simulation of coal mining and examining the interaction between rock fracture, aquifer interference and water flow. This paper also presents an example of an application of the integrated approach and COSFLOW in water inflow prediction at Springvale Mine in New South Wales.

The Ocean Drilling Program is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (Legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the 19 countries that subscribe to ODP. Australia and Canada share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The Australian Secretariat of the ODP is housed at the Department of Earth Sciences at James Cook University, along with the AUSCAN Consortium office. The Canadian Secretariat is presently based at the University of Toronto. Both secretariats have major research interests in the ore deposits, both ancient and modem, and so there is currently a major drive by the AUSCAN ODP Consortium to make available data and technological information to the minerals industry. This type of information includes data from drilling hydrothermal sites such as the hydrothermally active TAG black smoker complex on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, drilled during Leg 158, and the Middle Valley sulphide deposit, on the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge, which was drilled during Leg 139.

Operations at the Mount Bonnie gold/silver project are described. The project is based on the gossan of a stratiform and stratabound polymetallic sulphide deposit. The gossan contains approx- imately 100 000 tonne of ore grading 8g/tonne Au and 230g/tonne Ag. This is mined in an open cut, and transported to a stockpile area lkm away, from which it is fed to the treat- ment plant. The ore is crushed through two stages and fed to a fine ore storage shed, from which it is reclaimed, milled and cyanide leached in draft tube agitators. The pulp is filtered using a horizontal belt filter to recover a pregnant solution. Silver sulphide is precipitated using sodium sulphide solution, and collected as a mixed sulphide/precoat concentrate on a drum filter. The solution is then passed through carbon columns where the gold is adsorbed and is subsequently recovered by methanol desorption using a process developed by Micron Research, and electrowinning. Modifications to the treatment plant circuit based on operational experience are Described.

The Girilambone Copper Mine is located in central New South Wales and has been operational since May 1993. Girilambone is operated by the Girilambone Copper Company (GCC) which is a joint venture between Straits Resources (60 per cent) and Nord Resources (40 per cent). The mine complex consists of an open cut pit, ore crushing and stacking, heap leaching, solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) allowing for the recovery of 14 600 tpa of LME grade A cathode copper. Spiral concentrators are used globally in the fine coal processing industry to segregate particles, by gravitation, on the basis of density and size. Consisting of an open trough that twists vertically downwards about a central axis, a slurry mix of particles and water is fed to the top of the concentrator. Particles are then separated radially as they gravitate downward. Since their introduction to Australia in the 1940's, the generic design has evolved largely by laboratory trial-and-error investigations of different prototypes. However, this approach has proven expensive and optimal designs have not been necessarily developed. Accordingly, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis has been used recently as an alternative method of investigation, to assume as is envisaged, a role in the design process. To date, CFD models have progressed to simulations of turbulent fluid flow on current production spiral designs, and are continuing to be adapted for inclusion of particles at realistic feed concentrations. To be able to use the models confidently however, laboratory experiments must also be performed to validate the predictions during the development stage. This paper reports the current findings of an ongoing CFD and experimental program applied to one spiral unit. Satisfactory quantitative agreement has been achieved for the fluid and particulate flow characteristics, and although further validations are appropriate, the model already possesses significant potential for use as a reliable predictive design tool.

The initial planning and detail design phase leading to the development of a 7.5 m internal shaft to service the deep 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa, Queensland is well advanced. The choice of internal shaft access was made over alternative methods such as a decline from existing levels and borehole hoisting. The resulting access development requirements and shaft configuration for production have been determined. Several techniques are being studied for shaft development. These include the application of blind shaft drilling and large hole reaming methods as well as conventional sinking techniques. As the 3000/3500 Orebodies extend from 1000 metres to more than 1800 metres below the surface, high stress conditions and ground temperatures ranging from 45CC to 62CC are anticipated. The effect of these on the methods being investigated to create a favourable working environment will influence the final choice. Exploration diamond drilling is in progress to confirm the geology of the orebodies so that planning for their extraction including refrigerated ventilation concepts can proceed.

A dynamic model of a dense medium circuit has been developed and tested against plant data. The model shows the response of the circuit to both controlled (changes in specific gravity set point or changes in circuit coal feed rate) and uncontrolled changes (changes in raw coal moisture, loss of raw coal feed) in operating conditions. The model is built up from dynamic models of the individual sumps, pumps, pipes, splitters, magnetic separators and automatic controllers in the circuit. The model can be used for design of automatic control loops and for investigation of possible process modifications such as changes in water addition points. This paper describes the model construction, the testing of the model against actual plant data and gives some examples of its use in investigating plant response to changes in operating conditions.

Coal/gas outbursts were one of the rather difficult safety problems faced in the coal mines of this Country, with coal fields characterized by frequent disturbances of folds, faults and pinch-offs. With average mining depth about 500m below surface, several such accidents occurred with up to 500 tonnes of coal outburst. In recent years, after a series of improving countermeasures had been undertaken, gas outburst accidents had been greatly decreased. The characteristics of gas outbursts in Taiwan coal mines include relating to coal petrography, mining depth and the other deformation forces. All these have been investigated, trying to determine the parameter of outbursts under natural conditions. The preventive countermeasures include predicting tests, de-stressing boring in coal seams, the emergency procedures during outbursts and certain improving options.

B Lens Main is a scheelite orebody with an average dip of approximately 15¦ and thickness ranging from 1.5 to 6.0 m. The orebody is overlain by a banded section of ore and waste which tends to slab off if left unsupported. It was originally planned to mine a large portion of this orebody by room and pillar methods, with existing diesel trackless equipment. This, however, proved unsuitable for a number of reasons and the smaller scale method of slot stoping with hand machines and scrapers was employed. The following major problems were encountered. 1. The method was new to the mine and the work force, and had to be commenced quickly using existing or easily obtainable equipment. This is gradually being overcome by training, modification of procedures and introduction of more suitable equipment. 2. The slabbing from the hanging wall had to be controlled, either by support or by mining this low grade section and accepting the resultant dilution. This has been approached in a number of ways, depending on conditions and the method will have to be further modified as different conditions are encountered in new areas.

Analyses of several nickel mattes from around the world show a significant variation in their copper content. Typically, matte contains an alloy, heazlewoodite and a copper sulphide phase. The various commercial methods of processing these mattes are reviewed and some of the fundamental factors which determine the choice of leaching system are discussed. Electrochemical studies on pure heazlewoodite and millerite in sulphate and chloride media are compared which show that nickel sulphides react via a series of nickel deficient sulphides and exhibit passivation as nickel is removed. Differences in the electrochemical behaviour of nickel sulphides in chloride media are attributed to greater crystallinity of sulphur and less formation of'NiS2. The electrochemistry of mattes differs because of the presence of alloy and copper. Copper in the matte modifies the potential for alloy dissolution and the rate of anodic dissolution of nickel. At elevated temperatures, Cu(II) in solution exchanges with NiS and completes the leaching of nickel at relatively low potentials without significant oxidation of sulphur to sulphate. It is concluded that there are fundamental advantages to leaching nickel matte in chloride media using Cu(II)/Clz as the oxidant.

Extensive reserves of kaolin of the type suitable for use as a high quality paper coating exist on the Weipa Peninsula. In 1986 a commercial processing plant was constructed to produce 100 000 tonnes per annum of coating quality kaolin targetted principally for export. A number of processing difficulties have limited the production capability of the plant. The prime area being the pressure filtration operation with achieved cycle times being around 50-60% of design. The rate determining steps being press filling, press unloading and filter cloth washing. The Granites Goldfield is located 550 km northwest of Alice Springs. Mineralisation was discovered in 1900 and intermittently worked along nine km of strike until the early 1950's, yielding a recorded production of 470 kg of gold. The geological environ- ment, pre-existing exploration drilling results, and an optimistic view on gold, prompted acquisition of the property by North Flinders Mines Limited in 1975. An agreement was signed with the Central Land Council in August 1983 and drilling commenced in the same month. In the past, gold was won from alluvial deposits, rich quartz veins and lower grade, disseminated stratabound mineralisation. The last is contained within a distinctive unit in the Mt. Charles Beds, of the Early Proterozoic Tanami Complex. This informally named "Host Unit" is a metamorphosed, chemical- pelitic sediment. The schist contains variable proportions of amphibole, quartz, garnet, clinopyroxene, carbonate and sulphide, inter- calated with recrystallised chert beds. Free gold occurs in several mineralised horizons within the Host Unit, generally conformably distributed within lithologic bands or at lithologic contacts. The Host Unit occurs within a sequence of metamorphosed pelitic sediments and intermediate volcanics. Although mostly confined to the Host Unit, stratabound gold mineralisation also exists in both Footwall and Hanging Wall Schists, usually within zones displaying certain Host Unit characteristics. The deposits may be loosely categorised as being of banded iron formation (bif) type, although some important differences are noted between them and classical bif type orebodies.

Underground mining in the West Moreton coal field started in the 1870's. Subsidence related to coal mining activities is an ongoing problem facing planners and developers in the Ipswich area in South Eastern Queensland. The history of coal mining in the area over the last 110 years has left the legacy of periodic surface instability in several areas. In general, modern engineering analysis with current mining methods combine to create predicatable analysis of surface stability and movement. Where old workings using several variations of the bord and pillar system are affected by current activity, the predictibility of the surface movement is greatly reduced. Geological complexities further complicate the analysis. Mining and the related dewatering affects the stresses on pillars in old workings. This is caused by reducing buoyancy effects caused by changes in the water levels in old workings. Of particular relevance is the depth of workings and strength of the coal and overburden. The type of subsidence affecting the surface can range from localised pillar failure, to roof failure and potholing and the likelihood of the particular form of subsidence can be assessed from studying the workings in relation to the stratigraphy and structure of the coal measure Formations.
