On the southern flank of Lihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000-1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction- modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

IN the early age of steel it was made hy what is known as the cementation proeess, in which wrought iron was embedded in charcoal and heated in a mufflc furnace to a tcmperature of approximately 1100° C. for varying lengths of time, the length of time depending upon the amount of carbon (or better known in thosedays as the degree of hardness) required in the finished product.By this process the resultant product obtained was not of uniform quality, and because of this uncertainty of quality Huntsman was induced, in the year 1740, to introduee what is known as the crucible process.This process consisted of cutting into small pieces the product of the cementation process, placing these pieces in a crucible, and melting them down with the aid of a eoke-fired furnace, after which the molten metal was cast into suitahly shaped ingots, from which could be hammered any desired shape.A section of crucible furnace is shown in Fig. 1. By this means a product, very uniform in character, was produced.The process is still in use, but, owing to its high operating cost, it is mostly eonfined to the production of very high-grade carhon and alloy steels. Its position to-day as a producer of these high-grade steels is, however, being very seriously challenged by the electric process.It was owing to the excessive cost of crucible steels and the need of producing a steel in commercial quantities and at a reasonable cost, that led Sir Henry Bessemer to introduce what is known as the Bessemer process.

Thirty two polyacrylamide flocculant samples were selected from the wide range offered to the Australian coal industry. An extensive test program was conducted to consider the properties of the flocculants, the substrates, the process conditions and the water chemistry encountered in coal preparation plants. The study indicated that flocculants with molecular weights of 12 to 14 million and degree of hydrolysis around 40% gave the best "average" performance over a wide range of process conditions. The pick-up and filtration of fine coal was demonstrated on a pilot scale to be a critical function of flocculant properties. This study also showed that the agitation intensity during flocculation was a critical parameter in determining the settling rate of the slurry and the clarity of the resulting supernatant. An electronic meter to measure agitation intensity was designed, constructed and tested to demonstrate how, for the first time, laboratory results can be implemented in operating plants.

This paper outlines the feasibility assessment conducted to explore the possibility of constructing two submarine water supply pipelines beneath the Ma Wan Channel in Hong Kong using either horizontal directional drilling or tunnelling. The Ma Wan Channel is a major shipping channel in the Northwest New Territories, which separates Ma Wan Island from the mainland. The challenges faced by the projectÆs designers included space limitations on either side of the channel, marine department restrictions on construction activity within the channel and selection of a suitable crossing alignment and profile given the channelÆs depth, irregular sea floor topography and complex geology. The existing geological information indicated the proposed alignment would cross granitic and volcanic formations, which would likely be faulted. The primary concerns with horizontal directional drilling were:the length, diameter and depth of the crossing were at the limit of precedent experience in rock; the lack of available space at both the entry and exit sites; and whether the technique would be flexible enough to cope with the anticipated range of ground conditions. The primary concerns for tunnelling were: the possibility of encountering large inflows of high pressure groundwater; andthe possibility of encountering disturbed ground within the fault zones which could flow if not properly treated. As a means to evaluate and mitigate these technical risks for both construction options, a directionally drilled pilot hole was used to investigate the ground conditions along the proposed pipeline alignment. The pilot hole results indicated that either directional drilling or a closed face TBM drive were technically feasible crossing options at a crossing depth of 80 m. The results also indicated that either an open face TBM or a drill blast drive would need to be constructed at much greater depth because of the presence of highly permeable, disturbed ground in mid-channel at this crossing elevation.

This paper is written as a supplement to that of Edwards, Baker and Knight on "The Geology of the Wonthaggi Coalfield" 1, the West Area pit being in an early developmental stage at the time of their paper. The thin seams to the west of Dudley Basin 2 had beenknown for many years but it was not until 1935 that it became necessary to work them. The West Area Pit came into production as Dudley Area Pit approached exhaustion in 1937. From available information it was estimated that early work would be in a 36in. bottom seam. The present top seam was not included in the reserves, but it was to be extracted where it proved thick enough for economical working.THE SEAMSEdwards, Baker and :Knight (1944) had insufficient information to correlate positively the West Area seams with those in the Dudley Basin. Their opinion was, however, that they were a westerly extension of the Bottom Seam. Since then the driving of the present north-east heading towards No. 4 Bench McBride Tunnel has established that the West Area seams are those worked as Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. West Area Top Seam is a seam that occurred above the Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. Only sporadic attempts have been made to work it in Central Area, because 30in. was considered an economic minimum height until recent times. This seam should not be confused with Top Seam, Dudley Basin, which lies some 300ft. above the bottom seam measures and except in isolated areas over deeper workings has been eroded away in West Area.

A mechanised sub-level overhead benching method is used at Cleveland, to produce 22,000 tons per month of ore assaying 0.92% Sn and 0.40% Cu. The ore occurs in a series of vertical lenses which can be mined by open stoping. Levels are developed at 60ft., vertical intervals by jumbos. The ore is silled out and the stope block formed between levels drilled out by long hole drilling. Each row of holes is fired and broken ore within safe reach from the stope brow is mucked out by Wagner ST-5A Scoop Trams. The remaining broken ore is recovered on extraction of the next lower level. Ore is hauled by road to the crusher station from the mine. As mining proceeds below the lowest surface portal a spiral decline will be used for ore haulage and mine servicing.

The Mount Sisa orebody on Misima Island, P.N.G., consists of goldsilver mineralisation associated with massive carbonate and amorphous iron-manganese oxides in fractures and breccia matrix. The orebody forms the northern extension of the Umuna deposit, which lies within a three kilometre strike length of a northwest trending, 300 metres wide, high angle fault zone. The structure is deeply oxidised, with the magniferous oxide material resulting from oxidation of carbonate. The wallrocks are metamorphosed basement psammopelites and basic volcanic rocks, extensively intruded by microgranodiorite. These are dominantly epidotised and sericitised. The precious metals are associated with anomalous Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, As, Ba, Ga, Sb, and Mo. Many of the features of the Mount Sisa mineralisation are characteristic of volcanic-hosted epithermal deposits of western North America.Lithologic and textural gradation is observed between the carbonate hydrothermal breccia-fill at Mount Sisa, and the quartz dominated brecciafill and dilational fracture-fill mineralisation which forms most of the Umuna deposit to the south. This gradational relationship is analogous to that in the Amethyst-OH vein system at Creede, Colorado, where it is shown to be indicative of deposition from laterally migrating fluids.

The microstructures exhibited by ilmenite in its association with other oxide minerals have been the subject of a number of papers, the most comprehensive of which is that by Ramdohr. The following observations in some degree extend his conclusions. They are based upon a study of about sixty specimens of "massive" ilmenite and titaniferous ores from a number of wIdely 'scattered Australian localities. Specimens of this character proved much rarer than was expected. The collection was gathered together through the generous aid of the University Geological Departments, Geological Surveys, and Natural History Museums of the several States of the Commonwealth, all of which contributed such specimens of local origin, as they possessed. Industrial processes involving multi-phase flows such as flotation require understanding of the relationships between bubbles, solid particles and the flow. Modern experimental tools are employed in this effort to measure with great accuracy the basic features of the motion of all three phases in turbulent flow. We employed a unique digital particle image velocimeter (DPIV) that can record with great accuracy and kHz temporal resolution, velocity vectors of all three phases, namely the fluid, the solid particles and the air bubbles. The interaction of these three phases was studied in homogeneous isotropic turbulence generated by cylindrical grids. Particles and bubbles were released into the turbulence and the motions of the three phases were monitored. The experimental results obtained in the present work were compared with the predictions of the models published in the literature.

The sedimentery basins of this region developed in the collision zone of the Pacific Ocean plate and the continent. Stresses were transmitted thorough wedge-like lithospheric blocks, such as the Okotsk Sea, East Kamchatka, Aleutian and 2 other smaller blocks. Compression and inversion were more active at the boundaries: P ; P3 ; N1 ; and Z N in places. ? The orebodies at Kambalda are complexly faulted, folded and intruded. It is realized that the ore reserve calculations will be wrong and steps are taken to minimise the errors. The calculations are a combination of computer data handling and manual input. Initially Geological Ore Reserves are calculated and then production data and experience are used to produce a Planned Mining Reserve. At all stages maximum professional judgement is incorporated. The basis of the calculation is the polygonal method of area estimation, and production reconciliations together with the style of data available indicate that it is a most suitable technique. It is also a tech- nique that is easily communicated to all levels from operators to management.

This paper describes the application of a three-dimensional finite element modelling tool to help assess the stability of a highwall at a Central Queensland mine following the weakening of its base due to highwall mining. With traditional stability assessment techniques, likely failure modes are identified on the basis of previous experience and structural, sedimentological and geomechanical data and a mechanistic analysis of these individual modes is performed. The value of the full three-dimensional model over these traditional techniques is that it provides a coherent approach to assessing highwall stability without the necessity of initially deciding upon the dominant failure mechanism and gives a useful adjunct to the traditional tools. The three-dimensional model assumes the rock mass is made of elasto-plastic blocks, incorporating possible planes of weakness, separated by near horizontal joints. The model includes the relaxation of stresses due to the excavation of the highwall and incorporates estimates of blast damage near the highwall surface

This work was instituted to investigate the microscopic structure of brown coals by means of microtome sections cut from them. It was found to be essential to impregnate the coal with some material prior to cutting, because of its powdery and crumbly nature. Of a number of impregnating materials tried, e.g., glycerine gum, gelatine, by far the most satisfactory was paraffin wax. Samples of brown coals for section cutting must be moist. When obtained, they should be put immediately into air-tight tins, and, if they are not to be used for some time, it is desirable to keep them under water containing a small amount of formalin. If the sample is allowed to dry in air, it becomes too hard to be cut. It cannot be softened again even by prolonged soaking in water.PREPARATION OF COALSmall rectangular, blocks were cut from the sample with a chisel and a strong scalpel. The largest block prepared was 3·2 x 2·5 x 0·6 cm. The faces of the block from which sections were to be cut were approximately levelled before treatment. The block was then painted carefully on all sides with two coats of warm aqueous agar, approximately 2 %. This prevented crumbling and breakage of the block during treatment. When the agar was set, the block was placed in water, and all the air removed with a vacuum pump. The water was replaced first by alcohol, then by chloroform, by the usual step transference of a series of liquids, in each of which the block was placed for 24 hours: Ethanol %, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 85, 95, 100 (three changes); Ethanol-chloroform, 3: 1, 1: 1, 1 : 3, chloroform pure (three changes) '. The equilibrium phase relations in the Fe- Mn-Ti-0-S system were established at 1380 and 1485 K. The elemental distributions between the equilibrium phases were obtained by chemical- ly analysing selected samples from the phase study. The results are considered in relation to the coal reduction process for upgrading ilmenite. The beneficial effect of adding sulfur to a kiln that uses a manganese-rich feed is ex- plained by the formation of a metal-sulfide solid-solution phase that removes part of the manganese from the oxide system. The optimum conditions for operating the reduction kiln are determined, and the practical need to operate the kiln at other than optimum conditions is explained. It is shown how the experimental data can be used to predict the best compromise conditions for reduction and the resultant purity of the product.

Slope stability has now become a practical tool in the design and oper- ation of open pits. The stability of rock slope depends on many factors, including not only structural geology, the existence of weak layers, ground- water, blasting and weathering, but also the virgin stress field. This paper presents an application of a numerical method to investigate the effect of the virgin stress on slope stability. The finite element method is employed to simulate the excavation of open pits. Redistributed stress fields in the slope of open pit are computed for several different virgin stress fields. Based on the redistributed stress fields, the shear force which tends to produce sliding of a rock mass and the frictional resistance to sliding are evaluated. The possibility of potential failure is assessed by the limit equilibrium method. The combination of the finite element method with the equilibrium method provides a powerful analytical tool for slope stability. The significant effect of virgin stress on the stability of slopes is shown by studying a typical case.

The Courier 300 system basing on conven- tional X-ray technology is applied to complex or large processes. The newer Minexan 202 dis- tributed probe system based on radioisotope technology is developed mainly for simple or small scale applications. Morwell Open Cut is a continuous mining operation employing 5 buck- etwheel excavators, I bucket chain excavator and 54 conveyors. The combined bunkering capacity at both client Power Stations represents less than 12 hours maximum coal demand. This creates an extremely dynamic operating environment, which is further complicated with significant variations in both excavating and transportation plant capabilities. To achieve set objectives, including- I adequate reserves, 2 coal supply reliability, 3 cyclic plant maintenance, 4 minimal cost of coal, scheduling of the operation requires constant monitoring and reappraisal. Investigations are in progress to develop a computer based scheduling tool capable of simulating the complex operating environment. A review of computer scheduling packages currently available within the State Electricity Commission of Victoria has found limitations making most unsuitable for the task. The type of package found to be most suited is a knowledge based system ('Expert System')capable of operating within a set of rules defined by the user. Work is proceeding on the development of a knowledge base to test the effectiveness of Personal Computer based `Expert Systems'.

The application of new and currently practised mining techniques in new areas and at greater depths necessitates considerable and immediate research effort. This effort is aimed at identifying the factors which make a particular method suitable and economically viable in a given geological, structural and operational environment. These factors, together with greatly enhanced knowledge of a deposit at the exploration and planning stage, allow selection of the most appropriate and efficient mining method in a new area such that coal resource recovery is maximised in a cost effective manner. Current research and future requirements for research into mining methods and associated equipment and mine services are reviewed.
