Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary coals in the Greymouth, Ohai and Kaitangata coalfields represent a major national energy resource comprising-up to 2500 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. The three coalfields are closely related in terms of age and sedimentary and structural character. The most striking feature common to all is the complexity of the geology which has severely restricted exploration and mining of these coal resources. This complexity is manifest in the irregular lensoid nature of coal seams and by the incidence of unpredictable medium and small scale faulting and folding. There are many geological similarities between these coalfields which are considered to arise from a common origin which can be related to the plate tectonic evolution of the southwest Pacific region. In order to efficiently assess and exploit these coal resources it will be necessary to know their geology in great detail. This can he achieved by increasing the understanding of the sedimentary and structural evolution of the coal bearing basins. This knowledge may be gained by the application of traditional (ie drilling, field mapping) and innovative techniques (ie high resolution seismic, in seam seismic) with on going research-oriented studies (ie basin analysis, coal petrography).

The paper covers the history and develop- ment of electrical and diesel-powered hydrau- lic percussion rock drills. It examines main design aspects and problems encountered in pro- ducing an efficient and reliable machine to fully cover the nominal hole sizes required for underground development, production drill- ing and for general quarry work. The main design features and advantages of a hydraulic rock drill are relatively low input power requirement to energy per blow (this being achieved by the use of an electric or diesel- powered hydraulic system) and a specially con- structed piston using a powered damper cylinder to absorb the recoil forces from the drill steel and reduce stresses on the drill, feed and hydraulic boom. A further important design feature is the anti-jamming device which controls the drill both during manual and automatic operation. This anti-jam device works on feed and rotation press and prevents the drill bit becoming jammed in broken or soft ground. These features and many other mechanical and environmental benefits are highlighted when comparing hydraulic percussion rock drills with current pneumatic machines. The hydraulic rock drill gives an overall high penetration and production rate, with an added bonus for ergonomy and environmental conditions such as lower noise level, no fogging from air and oil exhaust (which naturally gives better air for breathing),plus improved vision when in under- ground situations. Hydraulic rock drills and systems have been fully tested in many mines, quarries and contract sites during the past years. They h6! been improved and modified and are now provi~ to be very reliable and economical piece drilling equipment whò in mines and quarries.

Increasing concern with the emission of sulphur dioxide from smelters and roasters has caused renewed interest in processes which can use waste sulphur dioxide, such as the sulphation of nickel laterite ores. The process described here proposes to by-pass the production of sulphuric acid and react laterite directly with a sulphur dioxide containing atmosphere. A thermodynamic analysis identified operating windows in which nickel sulphate forms while iron oxide (the major impurity in most laterite ores) remains stable. The initial assumptions included unit activity of all species except nickel oxide. The lowest possible nickel oxide activity (while maintaining selectivity) increased with increasing temperature, indicating that selective sulphation is favoured by low temperatures. The temperature of interest was found to be between 500 and 800¦C. Calculations show that a feed gas containing ten per cent SO2, five per cent 02, balance N2 requires a temperature greater than 650¦C for selective sulphation of nickel. Laboratory experiments showed that the assumption of unit activity of ferric sulphate was unrealistic above about 680¦C due most likely to the formation of solid solutions which decreased the ferric sulphate activity. Results are presented which illustrate the limiting equilibrium sulphur trioxide partial pressures at 700 and 730¦C below which selective sulphation occurs. Cobalt extraction was usually between 80 and 95 per cent under conditions yielding selective sulphation, whilst nickel extraction was about 50 to 75 per cent depending on temperature and choice of upper limit of iron extraction. An operating diagram is presented for a limonite ore and shows that the optimum reaction conditions are 680¦C and an input gas containing 20 per cent SO2. Under these conditions nickel, cobalt and iron extractions are 73, 95 and two per cent respectively.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is a sub-level caving operation located in north-west Queensland, Australia. Located below a previously mined open pit, the underground operation ramped up production to 6.8Mt/a in 2017. The EHM ore body dips at 45 degrees to the South and therefore requires each level to “step out” from the level above as seen in Figure 1. Within this step out zone it is important to both maximise recovery and allow for efficient operation of the underground workings production to bring the level up to full production as quickly as possible. Throughout the step out design process, a combination of further defining the ore boundary, using lessons learnt from production performance on upper levels and the introduction of design improvements, has reduced the production ramp-up time, decreased costs and increased recovery for a single level at EHM. The European Union has listed vanadium (V) as one of the critical raw materials for the transition to a future green society, as stated in the Critical Raw Material Act, written by Grohol and Veeh (2023). In the steelmaking industry based on V-containing iron ore, V is a possible by-product from the slag. A requirement for slags to be suitable for V extraction is a V content preferably above 8 wt per cent as V2O3 and a phosphorus (P) content below 0.1 wt per cent as P2O5. Hence, it is important to keep V in the slag phase while the P is moved to the metal phase during the steelmaking process.

There is currently a world wide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow charac- teristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A Capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for deter- mining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0 0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦- 319¦C, Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physico- chemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage.

Highwall failures in surface coal mines in Queensland occur as circular slips through weak and weathered material, or as bilinear slides on sub-horizontal surfaces and steeply dipping joints. Weak horizontal planes occur in the Permian-Tertiary unconformity or on bedding surfaces within the Permian Coal Measures. Sub-vertical movements occur along rock joints and tension cracks induced by stress relaxation after excavation. Blasting also introduces new fractures and causes movement along existing rock discontinuities. Critical factors for stability include the dip direction of potential failure surfaces, shear strength of the rocks, damage due to blasting prior to highwall excavation, groundwater conditions, the type and performance of clays on shear surfaces, and pit geometry.

The excavation of a coal mine or any other mine, tunnel, or quarry, below the water table establishes a void towards which ground- water will flow. Inflows into the mine, if significant, can cause not only problems such as flooding, and/or muddy floors, in the mine, but commonly also require disposal of poor quality groundwater. The flow of groundwater towards a mine is accompanied by a decline in groundwater levels, which may extend up to several kilo- metres around the mine. This may seriously effect vegetation, stream flow and existing users of groundwater. At the pit face groundwater gradients can also cause slope stability problems and where a water table is intersected, increase blasting costs.

The intention of this paper is to examine the practical and technical aspects associated with the measurement of blasting related phenomena. The emphasis is directed towards the acquisition of quantitative data rather than its theoretical interpretation. The application of advanced technologies will require that many more people involved with blasting become familiar with this topic. Against the many other disciplines where measurement may be beneficial, blasting is peculiar on several counts. 1) It must almost always be carried out in the field, and very often in a production environment. 2) Much consideration must be given for the safety of personnel and equipment. 3) The process is dynamic and seldom repeatable. Because the blast process is so dynamic there is little opportunity for direct examination. For this reason measurements are almost universally made using electronic techniques. In this way the event can be captured faithfully as it occurs and later examined in detail, after the fact. It is obvious that some familiarity with these electronic techniques is a necessary ingredient for successful blast monitoring.

In undertaking the dubious, but oft-times necessary business of prediction, thr, historian will base his/her forecasts on tr-ands of the past, the speculator on current events, and the politician on what he/she would dearly like to see happen. The thoughts expressed in this address seem to have arisen through exercising a combination of all three of those philosophies but, hopefully, with a smat- tering of pragmatism.

A requisite corollary of mineral sand mining on North Stradbroake Island (Queensland (Qld), Australia) has been the progressive rehabilitation of post-mined lands for the revegetation of native subtropical Eucalypt communities. Since 2005, rigorous environmental monitoring has been undertaken to verify the annual development of post-rehabilitated sites. From these long-term analyses, a chronosequence of land revegetation (ranging from three to 26 years postrehabilitation) was developed to examine the rehabilitation trajectories of various post-mined sites in relation to proximal undisturbed locations. Here, we identified that some sites may be deviating from the intended natural analogues as evidenced by the opportunistic colonisationand otherwise æinvasiveÆ behaviour of a regionally native species (Black Sheoak - Allocasuarina littoralis), which appear to be displacing the intended Eucalypt varieties. Although it is recognised that the broader data trends correspond to distinct periods of adaptive modifications to the implementation of rehabilitation (ie pre- and post-1995), this analysis focuses on further identifying potential above- and belowground feedback mechanisms underlying these divergent ecological outcomes.CITATION:Audet, P, Gravina, A, Glenn, V, McKenna, P, Vickers, H, Gillespie, M J and Mulligan, D R, 2012. On 26 June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19 000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine, which caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at NormandyÆs zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the mine adjacent to Scuddles, Gossan Hill had progressed to a point where a self-supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high-grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16 July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in situ performance.

Under design philosophy, the Hilton concentrator produced lead, zinc and LGM (lead plus zinc) concentrates. The LGM (Iow grade middling) concentrate was produced by combining coarse middling streams from the lead and zinc circuits, regrinding and subsequent flotation. Mineralogical examination of the zinc circuit middling stream prior to regrinding suggested that production of zinc concentrate from the zinc circuit middling stream should be possible by rearranging existing plant equipment. Laboratory testing of samples of plant products, however, showed that regrinding combined wi th the usual reagent suite was nO1 sufficient to produce a zinc concentrate of the required specifications.Examination of the process water highlighted a problem with dissolved salts in the circuit water, which was solved by in-circuit precipitation of the dissolved ions with soda ash. Implementation of the procedure in the concentrator effectively transferred to the zinc concentrate all sphalerite previously recovered to the LGM concentrate.

A description is given of an investigation into the feasibility of using controlled recirculation of warm exhaust air into the cold intake air of underground mines during winter. Canadian mines can experience inlet air temperatures of minus 30 ¦C and less, requiring them to pre-heat their intake air. The use of controlled recirculation would reduce the inlet air quantity and thus reduce heating costs which exceed $1M on some mines.

The main aim of the conference is to work towards improved useage of steelplant slags which have largely been considered waste mater- ials, This paper summarised investigations carried out on the suitability of air cooled blast furnace slag, blast furnace granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag as road base materials. All slag samples were obtained from the PortòKembla Works of Australian-Iron and Steel Pty Ltd. Since road making materials are increas- ingly being characterised by use of resilient moduli, the compressive strengths and resilient moduli were determined for road base of the following slags. 1 Air cooled crushed blast furnace slag 2 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag, granulated slag, and lime 3 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag,-granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag. Evaluation of a local dacite (dense medium grained igneous rock, classification rhyolite), generally considered an excellent road base course material, was carried out for use as a reference material.

The mining industry needs to attract and recruit young talented people. An important task is, therefore, to create an attractive mining workplace that engages with, and motivates youngsters who are not particularly interested in working in the industry. This paper aims to illustrate a way forward for the mining industry to form healthy and safe workplaces honouring key components such as knowledge, skill, co-operation, continual development and acceptance of diversity. This is a way to create a vision of healthy and safe mining work. The mining industry must work towards zero vision; a future without accidents and hazardous environments. In this paper the authors discuss different aspects of an ‘attractive workplace’ and summarises lessons learnt in 26 statements dealing with safety, both physical and social work environments, and social responsibility. The authors hope these recommendations will provide some guidance for how attractive workplaces should be designed for future deep mining.The paper is based on lessons from two large European projects, a Swedish-Polish project: The Smart Mine of the Future; and a European Union project: Sustainable Intelligent Mining Systems (SIMS). Seismic tomographic imaging has been applied to determine the blast induced damage zones in bauxite pillars in underground mining. At the retreating stage, when pillar dimensions are reduced from 8 x 8 m to approximately 5 x 5 m, the' seismic tomographies reveal, through measurements of the P-wave velocities which is a measure of the degree of fracturation of the pillar rock mass, the presence of three zones within each pillar. In the external zone, where velocities recorded are below 750 m/s. extensive pillar damage occurs which is attributed to both the growth and coalescence of pre-existing cracks and even the creation of new cracks in the rock mass. This effect is in agreement with literature, when considering the peak particle velocity as a criterion for rock failure in tunnels. In the intermediate zone, where velocities range between 7S0-1000 m/s, damage to a much lesser extent occurs which is due mostly to growth of pre-existing cracks and widening of their apertures. The inner zone, where velocities exceed 1000 m/s, is considered to be unaffected by blasting. Simple remedial measures of low cost, which are based on blasting mechanics are proposed to minimise the blast induced damage zone and consequently the transition zone.
